American Empress is a sweeping history of the dramatic life of heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, daughter of breakfast-cereal magnate C. W. Post. As a young girl growing up in the Midwest, Marjorie Post helped glue cereal boxes in her father's barn, later became a board member of his company, wed a diplomat and by late middle age was widely acknowledged as the unofficial "Queen of Washington, D.C." The glamorous and warm-hearted Mrs. Post was also mother to actress Dina Merrill. Throughout her life, she gave generously to hundreds of civic, artistic and philanthropic causes, among which were the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Ballet and the Kennedy Center. By virtue of her brains, beauty and great wealth, Mrs. Post was a woman well ahead of her era, whose natural business acumen created the frozen foods industry and transformed the Postum Cereal Company into the General Foods Corporation.

          Book Description

Jerry Lawler is hailed as one of sports-entertainment's most enduring and colorful characters. His life has been filled with hilarious, never-been-told stories...until now! His reign consists of thirteen championships (one of which he's held more than forty times), three marriages, and two children. He's dominated Memphis radio and television airwaves. Starred in feature films. Recorded albums. Tolerated countless sprains, broken bones, concussions, and contusions. The way Jerry "The King" Lawler tells it, if you're good at something, do it more than once.

It's Good To Be The King...Sometimes is a no-holds-barred personal account from the "puppies"-pantin' King of one-liners, who steps out from behind the announcer's desk of WWE Raw to hold court about everything. His passion for art that first drew him to the ring of a rundown West Memphis movie theater over thirty years ago. The comic adventures and tragic bumps endured journeying down the "Music Highway" of Interstate 40 with the National Wrestling Alliance. Earning his royal personage in the Bluff City of the Mighty Mississippi against his own mentor, "Fabulous" Jackie Fargo. Grappling with mat legends Ric Flair, Lou Thesz, Jesse Ventura, Andre the Giant, Terry Funk, and Bret "Hitman" Hart. And his crowning achievements as co-ruler of the United States Wrestling Association, which contributed to the rise of future WWE Superstars Hulk Hogan, Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock.

It's time you lackeys pay heed as the King reveals the schemes and outrageous storylines to many of wrestling's most fantastic theatrics and all-too-real moments. Lawler tells of his legendary "feud" with Andy Kaufman, and his much-publicized confrontation with the actor portraying the late comedian on the set of Man on the Moon, and the "Karate-versus-Wrestling" match that almost occurred between Lawler and Memphis's other King. And be sure to honor his royal proclamations regarding former wives, and his mother's opinion of wrestling; why he once sued future boss Vince McMahon...and won; and the body part he truly worships on a WWE Diva.

It feels heavily abridged......they should have went with a 3 or 4 disk set. But still, it is entertaining and another great Amazon purchase.

          5 out of 5 stars I Love The King.......2007-02-10

I became a fan of Jerry Lawler since 1998. He's the greatest wrestler of all time in my book. And I love this book and I love his one liner jokes. This book talks about his wrestling career, and sex. I Love It.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes Very Good.......2006-10-04

Jerry Lawler is truly the King of Memphis pro wrestling, but he is also one of the biggest fans of the Cleveland Browns and has an extensive Coca-Cola collection. I guess it's good to also be the King in collectibles!

In a pretty straight-forward story of his life, Lawler sometimes delivers great insider information that is truly historical in nature. Other times the King falls flat trying to deliver bad yuks best saved for TV, or the circular file.

The book ended any lasting speculation on whether the David Letterman appearance in the early-1980s with Andy Kaufman was a work, which it was. But from the high-spots of some of the early matches with the comic, Lawler equally covers how he had to tell Kaufman that the feud had run its course in the territory.

Later, Lawler tells of his appearance in a film on Kaufman's life and the rude and bizarre behavior of Jim Carrey - who portrayed Kaufman. Carrey tried to bait Lawler into actually punching him out, seemingly to take Kaufman's stunt to reality.

There are plenty of anecdotes from early in his life to his career as a promoter and wrestler to keep even the most casual fan amused; including the time when Lawler was close to having Elvis Presley in the squared-circle.

Lawler does not mince words when he talks about the pitfalls of life on the road, his marital infidelity and not being a good father. It is ironic or poetic justice that his career with WWE was almost undone when he actually tried to save the marriage to his third wife, Stacy "The Kat" Carter, by leaving the company when her contract wasn't renewed.

The high points - like in the ring - are important in the history of territorial promotions and the bridge it set for Vince McMahon's vision for the worldwide promotion that is the WWE. Lawler is a true survivor.

5 out of 5 stars BEST INSPIRATIONAL BOOK EVER.......2006-04-05

This is not just a book about a wrestlers rise to glory, but an inspirational book for life. It tells you how the KING has twisted at every turn, but instead of letting it get him down he turned it to his advantage. Highly recomended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                  Book Description

"I think the book is a fine job, coming ''up close'' to issues that are often avoided or left tacit, and as a consequence have become terra incognita to many qualitative researchers. More precisely, they do not even know that they do not know."

--Matthew B. Miles, Senior Research Associate, Center for Policy Research

"The book will have an immediate and very wide audience. It is a marvelous statement, very synthetic, very accessible, and so nicely interpretive."

--Norman K. Denzin, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Interviewing is an essential tool in the repertoire of the qualitative researcher, and yet the intricate relationship between the "hows" and the "whys" of the interview process is not always easily understood. Steinar Kvale’s InterViews provides both theoretical underpinnings and practical aspects of the interview process. After examining the role of the interview in the research process, Kvale considers some of the key philosophical issues relating to interviewing: the interview as conversation, hermeneutics, phenomenology, concerns about ethics as well as validity, and postmodernism. Having laid out the framework, the author takes the reader through the seven stages of the interviewing process, from designing a study to writing it up.

Fundamental and essential, InterViews is written for students and professionals in qualitative and research methods, psychology, education research, nursing, social work, counseling, family studies, gerontology, evaluation, sociology, and anthropology.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy into the philosophy.......2007-05-12

Never performed qualitative research prior. Thought this book would be a helpful introduction. Very heavy on the theoretical side, as in making a solid case for why qualitative research is valid. I already accept its validity, wanted to know how to assess it and make it go smoothly. As I am not a serious scientist, this book had way more information than I needed. Still and all it is very informative and I would certainly recommend it if you are planning to do any work on the qualitative side and maybe need to convince your boss that it is a good idea.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, in-depth examination of complex research method.......1998-10-07

Kvale has done a great service for qualitative researchers the world over. Too often we take the interview process (from conceptualization through analysis) for granted. Kvale has clearly presented an indepth analysis of the the theoretical and philosophical foundations of interviewing and the influence those foundations have on the process, the content, and the analysis of qualitative interviews. This is essential reading for any qualitative researcher and should be on the required reading lists for any course in this area.

                    Book Description

On November 13, 1947, in Uniontown, PA, twenty-year-old Jim Townsend shot and killed his pregnant wife--a horrible crime that dominated front-page articles in the region. He was promptly convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In THE PRISONER, Paul Everett explores the first two decades of Jim's life, which comprise a sadly familiar saga of abuse and brutality stemming from his dysfunctional family and the harsh juvenile correctional institutions in which he was incarcerated. Everett shows why, when confronted with a devastating problem in his marriage, Jim's temperament could only deal with the situation violently.

However, while in prison, Jim experienced an extraordinary transformation due to God's love and forgiveness. Jim's step-by-step process of healing and redemption led to an astounding change and transformation and resulted both in his release from prison and in a new life as a Capuchin Brother. In this new existence Jim chose to head back into prisons--this time to provide a ministry of healing and hope that has profoundly influenced the lives of thousands.

In THE PRISONER, Paul Everett has provided an invitation to hopefulness for all who live in despair; whose lives and circumstances have brought them to the desperation of not knowing where to turn. It tells them that there is a living God who can heal, guide, transform and empower them, regardless of who they are, what they've done.

5 out of 5 stars The Prisoner an invitation to hope.......2007-08-11

A very compelling true story...It's very hard to put the book down. I read the book in 3 days, at work, at home and where ever I could get 10 minutes of spare time.

                    4 out of 5 stars The Prisoner.......2007-06-27

This book is very good. I was skeptical at first, but I realized that the change in the man happened over a long period of time.

                    5 out of 5 stars A tremendous story.......2005-05-05

This book is a special and important story of redemption and forgiveness. It follows the life of Jim Townsend, from his troubled youth, to his commission of a horrible crime, to decades spent in jail, and finally to a life of promise and hope. The lessons that Jim learns throughout his life help him finally to see his self-worth and prompt him to work on behalf of youth and inmates in this country. I found the story harrowing - and the take-away incredibly meaningful. While Jim's life is dramatic, its messages resonated with me (and, I wager, with all of us): forgiveness, freedom, love, self-worth. I highly recommend this book.

                      Book Description

Americans take for granted that ours is the very model of a democracy. At the core of this belief is the assumption that the right to vote is firmly established. But in fact, the United States is the only major democratic nation in which the less well-off, the young, and minorities are substantially underrepresented in the electorate. Frances Fox Piven and Richard A. Cloward were key players in the long battle to reform voter registration laws that finally resulted in the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (also known as the Motor Voter law). When Why Americans Don't Vote was first published in 1988, this battle was still raging, and their book was a fiery salvo. It demonstrated that the twentieth century had witnessed a concerted effort to restrict voting by immigrants and blacks through a combination of poll taxes, literacy tests, and unwieldy voter registration requirements. Why Americans Still Don't Vote brings the story up to the present. Analyzing the results of voter registration reform, and drawing compelling historical parallels, Piven and Cloward reveal why neither of the major parties has tried to appeal to the interests of the newly registered-and thus why Americans still don't vote.

5 out of 5 stars interesting discussion of decreasing voter participation.......2002-04-03

Great book revolving around the Moter Voter legislation passed in the 1990's. Piven and Cloward discuss the declining voter participation in the American democracy, attributing that decline to the parties demobilization of the American electorate and inability to remobilize. The authors argue that the declining voter participation is related to the lack of adequate and effective legislation, declining union membership, declining worker benefits and bargaining ability with free trade, and the exploitation of one class against another. The authors assert that the Democratic and Republican parties have no intention in actually remobilizing the electorate as new voters will change the current political game and add uncertainty to the incumbents reelections.

2 out of 5 stars Why Americans Really Don't Vote.......2001-02-05

Piven and Cloward continue to avoid the real causes and consequences of low turnout. "Why Americans Still Don't Vote," as with their other works, is motivated not by intellectual curiosity, but a political agenda. For those unsatisfied by this polemic, see Wolfinger and Rosenstone (1980) or Ruy Teixeira (1987 and 1992).

                      5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening.......2000-11-02

Piven and Cloward offer an intelligent, yet readable discussion on the downsizing of the American electorate. They claim that having low voter participation helps the controlling factions of the political parties remain unthreatened. They include a history of voter participation and representation in all levels of American politics and the factors that still leave some groups underrepresented today. A very insightful and enjoyable read.

                      Book Description

John Muir called it the "Range of Light, the most divinely beautiful of all the mountain chains I've ever seen." The Sierra Nevada--a single unbroken mountain range stretching north to south over four hundred miles, best understood as a single ecosystem but embracing a number of environmental communities--has been the site of human activity for millennia. From the efforts of ancient Native Americans to encourage game animals by burning brush to create meadows to the burgeoning resort and residential development of the present, the Sierra has endured, and often suffered from, the efforts of humans to exploit its bountiful resources for their own benefit.

Historian David Beesley examines the history of the Sierra Nevada from earliest times, beginning with a comprehensive discussion of the geologic development of the range and its various ecological communities. Using a wide range of sources, including the records of explorers and early settlers, scientific and government documents, and newspaper reports, Beesley offers a lively and informed account of the history, environmental challenges, and political controversies that lie behind the breathtaking scenery of the Sierra.

Among the highlights are discussions of the impact of the Gold Rush and later mining efforts, as well as the supporting industries that mining spawned, including logging, grazing, water-resource development, market hunting, urbanization, and transportation; the politics and emotions surrounding the establishment of Yosemite and other state and national parks; the transformation of the Hetch Hetchy into a reservoir and the desertification of the once-lush Owens Valley; the roles of the Forest Service, Park Service, and other regulatory agencies; the consequences of the fateful commitment to wildfire suppression in Sierran forests; and the ever-growing impact of tourism and recreational use. Through Beesley's wide-ranging discussion, John Muir's "divinely beautiful" range is revealed in all its natural and economic complexity, a place that at the beginning of the twenty-first century is in grave danger of being loved to death.

Written by history teacher David Beesley, who served as an associate of the Sierra Nevada Ecosystem Project and presented part of its report to Congress, Crow's Range: A Environmental History of the Sierra Nevada is an amazing chronicle of the Sierra Nevada mountain range that stretches across four hundred miles of California and Nevada. Chapters discuss the impact that native people, the gold rush, conservation efforts, and modern ecosystem politics have had upon these majestic mountains throughout history, especially during the mid-1800's to the modern day. An extensively researched history, sporting a wealth of notes, a thorough bibliography, and an index, Crow's Range is an enthusiastically recommended historical resource for lay readers and environmentalists alike.
