Book Description
The first full-length biography of alternative music's ranking wunderkind.
He has been called "the most important voice of his generation" by Allen Ginsberg. He has called his own music "a satanic K-Tel record that's been found in a trash Dumpster." He was named Bek David Campbell but is now called simply Beck, one of the most innovative and unpredictable musicians today. Ever since his 1994 accidental smash hit, the Generation X anthem "Loser," Beck has repeatedly defied categorization with his top-selling albums Odelay, Mellow Gold, Mutations, and Midnite Vultures, winning critical acclaim, commercial success, and a couple of Grammys. Rock journalist Rob Jovanovic goes behind the music to find that Beck's life story, although less well known, is just as unusual. His grandfather led the avant-garde Fluxus movement in the sixties, his father is a bluegrass musician who has worked with Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, and his mother was a Warhol starlet who adopted the L.A. punk scene. After growing up in Bible Belt Kansas and the ghettos of East L.A., Beck experimented with musical genres from blues and folk to hip-hop and punk, playing in Greenwich Village clubs and busking on Hollywood Boulevard. Jovanovic also profiles every song Beck has recorded and analyzes his artwork, videos, and TV performances to make Beck!: On a Backwards River the ultimate source on Beck Hansen.

Seems like all filler..........2002-11-19
The first few chapters of this book were good, Jovanovic had material on Beck's childhood and how he started as a musician. Then as soon as the book gets to the part when Beck releases Mellow Gold it gets boring. I, personally do not like Jovanovic at all. He acts like he is a music buff. He says Cake copies Beck. If anyone has heard Cake, then they know they sound nothing like Beck. They're completely different and unique. He needs more information to back up claims like that. I didn't flip through the book before I got it, and the 2nd half is all boring nonsense about individual songs, videos and art. It wasn't about Beck as a person at all.
A tad boring, but If your a hardcore Beck fan, then it's worth a read.
Boring.......2002-01-08
I'm a pretty big Beck fan, but this book rambled on and on. The author put in so much detail about people I slightly cared about, that I skimmed a lot of the material. It felt like a magazine article that had been padded up to make a book. I feel like I know very little more about Beck than when I started reading. I guess if you're into statistical information with regards to who played on what song and who directed which video (this information takes up half of the book) and what songs Beck played at each appearance, you'd like this book. As for me, I expected to learn more about Beck as a person and have more insights into his songs.
hello.......2001-11-08
I don't get why the other people who have wrote reviews on this book have been so harsh. The point of reading this book isn't to analyze every word. It's to learn more about the guy and look at all the photos. DUH
Being Beck Hansen.......2001-04-28
Poor Rob Jovanovic. Writing a celebrity bio of such a young guy must be tricky: how to tell the story without fawning, and what to say that might be worth reading a year from now. But this book is prosaic and tendentious, meandering pointlessly: the exact antithesis of Beck's songs.
The book is also irrelevant, except for the most gaga of fans. Beck tells his own story captivatingly. He connects with his listeners, not always emotionally, but in some dark, smokey recess of the brain. What more can his audience expect?

Little Evil: One Ultimate Fighter's Rise to the Top.......2007-10-06
After finishing within 2 days, I felt that it was very much more of a sob story than anything else. I am not trying to disrespect Jens. For those who want to read about Jen's past, this would fit the bill. It gives detailed account of his family life, school, financial situation etc. Perhaps for him, this was an especially emotional story hence certain people may not like this autobiography.
Jens Pulver the man and the fighter.......2007-08-31
This book was more than I thought it would be. I really wanted to know about Jens Pulver but this book takes you on a wild ride that he calls life. I loved every minute of it and I couldn't put it down. After reading this book I have a new respect for Mr. Jens Pulver.
A Non-stop Read.......2007-05-13
I have been a fan of MMA since I first heard of the UFC in 1993, but was only recently aware of Jens Pulver because of his fights in the now defunct Pride FC which were held in Japan years ago. I found this book almost impossible to put down, and although it had very little concerning his fighting career--just a little bit at the end--the story of his tough life has left an indelible mark on me, perhaps b/c I always wonder how people deal with adversity.
The writing is very well done, and the story flows along to the end without any dull parts in it. Pulver's story is at once gripping and inspiring, and it leaves one feeling hopeful. He shows others that one can either push past the obstacles and fight to overcome one's lousy circumstances in life, or one can play the victim and say "poor me" all their life. Pulver shuns the latter, and embraces the "do or die" mentality for which I respect him even more. If you know who he is, you will really enjoy this book. If not, but you are one of those people who always wonder about people's lives from their own perspective, you will also like this book.
Scary life, great fighter.......2006-05-19
Some really great stories. He's definitely my fav mma fighter.
The Apex - only one way down.......2005-12-26
At some point, all great athletes hit their peak, mostly in a way that will forever define them in the history of their sports. Pele to soccer; Michael Jordan to Basketball; Mark Spitz to swimming....Jens Pulver to Ultimate Fighting. Yet, most people only see their idols at the apex of their accomplishments - nobody really talks about the road taken. Jens Pulver, however, allows his readers to glimpse into the making of a champion. He discusses his life, with great lucidity, and allows the reader to glimpse some of the problems and hardships he has overcome. Yet, at no point in the book does he ever try to say that he is done growing as a person and as a fighter - he is always going to be growing.
Which in a sense gives the reader hope for thier own life. There is, in fact, a light at the end of the tunnel. For Pulver is was wrestling and then fighting, but it is something diffferent for every person.
Great Book.

Book Description
Newspapers, magazines, TV talk shows, album covers -- all display a proliferation of film star images. In the past we have tended to see celebrities as cogs in a mass entertainment industry selling desires and ideologies. But since the 1970s, new approaches have explored the active role of the star in producing meanings, pleasures and identities for a diversity of audiences.
Stardom brings together some of the best recent writing which represents these new approaches. Drawn from film history, sociology, textual analysis, audience research, psychoanalysis and cultural politics, the essays raise important questions for the politics of representation, the impact of the star on society and the cultural limitations and possibilities of stars.

Rome in 2nd Edition D&D.......2001-05-08
This is a supplement for 2nd edition D&D that covers the historical period of the Roman empire and translates roman myths and folklore into D&D terms.
It provides a good timeline for the empire, an okay section on roman adventures and the roman world, but the great section is the 2nd edition class and kit write ups. It provides for political soldiers, gladiators, oratory before the Senate, street thugs in the capitol city, witches, and priests for all the ectsasy cults and Roman gods. It is set in a low magic background as are all the historical settings but the magical details are great including the three witch spells it includes (dream curses, love charms and protective amulets).

John J. Murphy has now updated his landmark bestseller Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets, to include all of the financial markets.
"If one could read only one book on technical analysis, this should be the one." --Knight-Ridder Financial Products and News (on the first edition, Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets, 0-13-898008-X)
This outstanding reference has already taught thousands of traders the concepts of technical analysis and their application in the futures and stock markets. Covering the latest developments in computer technology, technical tools, and indicators, the second edition features new material on candlestick charting, intermarket relationships, stocks and stock rotation, plus state-of-the-art examples and figures. From how to read charts to understanding indicators and the crucial role technical analysis plays in investing, readers gain a thorough and accessible overview of the field of technical analysis, with a special emphasis on futures markets. Revised and expanded for the demands of today's financial world, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in tracking and analyzing market behavior.
"One way to get started in technical analysis is to read a good book on the subject. One of my favorites is Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets: A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Methods and Applications by John J. Murphy. It's an easy read." Ralph J. Acampora, CMT, Managing Director, Prudential Securities Inc.
Customer Reviews:
Reference.......2007-08-13
If you use the charts to look for trades, you have to buy this book. It's an awesome reference for charting.
Good Even for a Random Walker.......2007-07-22
This book is a very well written introduction to the Technical Analysis of the financial markets. It covers a lot of ground and for a text book style layout, it is surprisingly easy to read. Murphy starts with a solid introduction including the philosophy of technical analysis and a defense against the criticisms from academics and followers of the Random Walk Theory. The meat of the book is a comprehensive treatment of the core components of technical analysis including Trendlines, Reversal and Continuation Patterns, Moving Averages, and Oscillators. The author continues to dig deeper with Point & Figure Charts, Japanese Candlesticks, and Eliott Wave Theory.
As a big fan of Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street," I started reading this book with some healthy skepticism. While I was not converted to the chartist's philosophy, I felt like I did pick up some tools that could still be useful in a buy-and-hold strategy.
Everything a beginner needs to know.......2007-07-07
John Murphy's book explains nearly everything anyone who is looking to understand the technical side of the market could ask for.
PROS: Easy to follow. Starts from the ground up into the complicated stuff. Feels like a year's worth of college courses finished in a few weeks time. This is far and away the best overall stock book I've read to date. I'm making money now!
CONS: Spends a bit too much time on futures trading (for which the book was originally written) Doesn't get far enough into how much time should lapse as a pattern unfolds. Doesn't get much into the psychology of the trader's mind. Somewhat outdated on computer advances (not a big deal)
Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28
I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.
Excellent introduction to TA - an easy read.......2007-06-27
This is the first book I bought on TA and, honestly, it looked intimidating. It's not. Open it up and it reads cover to cover very quickly. Not too technical - not too basic. Just right. This is an excellent introduction to technical analysis: easy to read language, large print, nice heavy bright white pages. Oh, and the content is excellent as well: worded well, good organization, understandable examples and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Classic!.......2005-12-15
John Murphy's book is a modern day classic on the topic of technical analysis. His writing is precise and easy to understand- novice traders will especially appreciate this. Regardless of the title, the principles and techniques described in this book are applicable to not only the futures market, but to all markets, including stocks and forex. Highly recommended to all traders!

I'm very happy finding so much reveiw about this book. now ,
future marketing
ng is growing fastly in my country .But here, so little book introduct about it.
can i buy this book, through Amazon?
Now ,i am in china!
Text Book style - very effective analysis.......2000-10-18
Murphy has taken a very technical analysis of a "dry" subject and turned it into a readable, useful guide that should by read (and referred to often) by everyone who dares trade in the futures markets. It's a great first book on the subject, and a great book for experts alike.
A Clear and Essential Guide.......2000-08-15
Murphy has collected, collated, condensed and presented just about every method of technically analysing the futures markets. His text, whether dissecting simple or abstruse concepts, is remarkably lucid. Comprehensive and comprehensible, this is a reference futures traders must own. All I would have asked for in addition would be more suggestions for implementing trading strategies, but that, in fact, might require another book. If Murphy were to write it, he might outsell all those fake futures promoters and their $195 "courses" combined.
Excellent Primer!.......1999-12-13
This should be on every techie's bookshelf! Much better than the info in those $195 "get rich quick" mailings, for a lot less. If you are interested in learning technical basics, at a bargain price, this is the place to start. You will find yourself reviewing it over and over.
Book Description
Twyla Tharp is one of Americas greatest choreographers. Her career began in the early 1960s in New Yorks Greenwich Village and continues today on the Broadway stage where she electrifies audiences with Movin Out, set to Billy Joels music. Tharp reinvigorated dance by removing barriers between modern, jazz and classical dance forms. She confounds expectations of what people look for on the dance stage and flouts categorization at every turn from pieces like The 100s, choreographed for non-dancers, to Deuce Coupe, set to the music of The Beach Boys, to her monumental Catherine Wheel. Tharp is a member of the pantheon of choreographers that includes Balanchine, Robbins, De Mille, and Graham. She is one of Americas great artistic gifts to the world, and Marcia Siegel captures her life and her art in the first full-length book devoted to her.

Tanks On The Beaches: A Marine Tanker In The Pacific War is the memoir of Robert M. Neiman, a United States Marine Corps combat commander, who served in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. A tale of struggling against an implacably determined foe, tracing the journey from the deadly fields war in the Pacific, to the uncertainties of war's aftermath, to the voyage home, Tanks On The Beaches (written with the assistance of Kenneth W. Estes) offers a vivid and firsthand account and is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to the growing library of World War II battlefield autobiographies and memoirs.
Book Description
George W. Bush has gone out of his way to blur the line between religion and politics in America—this is acknowledged by his strongest supporters no less than by his most strident critics. The most common explanation of the president’s religious agenda points to rise of evangelical Protestantism. Yet as Damon Linker demonstrates in his groundbreaking
book, an exclusive focus on the role of evangelicals misses the heart of the story. At its core, the Bush administration’s overt religiosity represents the triumph of an ideological movement that for the past several decades has devoted itself to fashioning a theocratic governing philosophy for the United States—a governing philosophy rooted in Roman Catholicism. Led by Father Richard John Neuhaus, this group of “theoconservatives” has actively sought to roll back the division of church and state in American life.
The election of 2000 brought the theocons to the peak of political power and influence in Washington. Their ideas inspire the most controversial and divisive policies of the Bush administration—policies whose ultimate goal is nothing less than the end of secular politics in America.
Customer Reviews:
Highlights shift in loyalties in this country.......2007-09-18
Damon Linker, a former editor of First Things journal, details the rise of conservative theological influence on Washington politics in The Theocons: Secular America Under Siege. The emergence of religious rhetoric in political speech has been, for the most part, a recent infiltration contrasting against the secular swing of the sixties and seventies.
The Theocons chronicles the shift in loyalties of certain prominent theological leaders--namely Lutheran minister turned Catholic priest Richard John Neuhaus, and Catholic philosopher Michael Novak--from Vietnam War-inspired liberalism to the current theocracy permeating the Iraq War strategy.
The validity of Linker's assertions comes from his three and a half years of experience as editor of First Things, a publication by the Institute on Religion and Public Life, whose own goal according to the First Things website "is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society." Linker's personal observations of key players of the "theoconservative" movement, who also happen to be behind the creation of the journal, and his detailed research of prior publications made by these individuals, illustrate the deceptive manipulation of the American public by both the media and politicians, specifically the Bush Administration.
An unexpected quality of the book is that the majority of the content is relatively unbiased and is composed strictly of chronological facts. While it is clear that Linker disapproves of the agenda the theoconservative movement has created for the American people, the actions of those involved do well to create an image of an insidious political conspiracy, whether intentional or not. Collectively, religious leaders in the public eye have succeeded in molding American democracy into little more than an extension of the church.
The Theocons was originally published by Doubleday in 2006, and this 2007 Anchor Books trade paperback edition features an Afterword updated with two more years of political reactions and influence.
Armchair Interviews says: If this subject interests you, Linker offers a lot of thoughtful challenges.
The Missing Linker.......2007-07-17
Theocons sound like the latest version of Transformers: Autobots, Decepticons, Theocons. Whatever breed they belong to, it must have some audience draw to garner the author a rumored $160K advance for this insider's tale of their antics. The real scandal doesn't seem to be in the book at all, however. That would concern the missing Linker, who served? posed? as an editor at the New York journal First Things from 2001 to 2004. The Great Pen and Ink Scandal, one might call it, slightly borrowing a title from the Sex Pistols. Or maybe Decepticons VS Theocons in the battle for Ameritron. That might be a story.
One can understand a broke writer upping the stakes, anxious, as so many seem, to break his own personal Watergate. But exposes seem to be written in inverse proprtion to the legal guns on the other side. You won't, for instance, see exposes of, to take two names completely at random, Disney or Planned Parenthood any time soon. Linker has chosen the one guy probably guaranteed not to sue him, the ever- amiable editor and able author, Richard John Neuhaus. He's also chosen as his target, the calmest, most reasoned, thoughtful and profound journal in existence. I'm sure Linker himself subscribes to many that are far more strident.
Not to join the Watergate breed of wild- eyed reporters, nor admit that I myself fall into the starving writer category, but if you want to read the full story, you can. It's in the August/ Sept. 2006, Number 165 issue of First Things, pp. 76-77. Or better yet, subscribe to First Things yourself, as I suggest in this Linker-like ad: Follow the trail of death and destruction as the terrible Theocons strangle helpless America in their mighty grip! Who can save the tiny victim? Only that hero of truth and justice, the Decepticon Missing Linker.
Father Richard, Or, The Old Priest's Influence And How He Gained It (apologies to Lewis Carroll).......2007-02-10
"You are old, Father Richard," the young man said,
And your hair has become sparse and white;
You had started your ministry on the far left--
Yet you've ended up on the far right."
"In my youth," said the Father to Editor Linker,
"I thought leftists would win the game;
But when I saw that only rightists can win,
Why, over to that side I came!"
"You are old," said the man, "as I mentioned before;
And have grown most uncommonly shrill."
"You would much sooner die than let gays have their rights--
Pray, why do you wish them such ill?"
"In my youth," growled the sage, as he shook his gray jowls,
"I had such a strong horror of gays;
That now that I'm old I'll devote all my time,
To scourging them all of my days."
"You are old, Father Richard, and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than pigeon;
Yet you argue Church doctrine trumps secular laws--
Is this not an abuse of religion?"
"In my youth," said the Father, "I had such a beam in my eye,
That I swore I'd stop other folk's sinning by force,
Til' the coming of Jesus is nigh."
"You are old," said the man, "one would hardly suppose,
You'd back torture by red-blooded boys;
Yet you've balanced the war on the end of your nose--
What sophistries did you employ?"
"I've answered four questions, and that is enough!
This questioning makes me quite shrewish."
I just had a thought;" the old Father accused,
"Say, didn't you say you were Jewish?"
A very important and timely book.......2007-01-03
I have been concerned for many years with the power and danger of right wing religion in America, and for me the focus has been on Protestantism. So for me, this book was a necessary corrective and a powerful eye opener.
THE THEOCONS is a very important and timely book for anyone concerned with religious leaders hungry for political power and influence. In one sense it is a tell-all book by Damon Linker who worked for FIRST THINGS, the journal of right wing Roman Catholicism published by Rev Richard John Neuhaus. But that would be to trivialize the book, for Linker's purpose is not to tell personal tales at all. Rather, he carefully documents the development of this "theoconservative" movement over the past thirty years -- both a theological and political movement --- and tells of its deliberate attempts to influence U.S. society at many levels.
So the book deals with theology and (recent) history, and is not particularly a late night read. But it is well worth your time and attention. The author has done his homework, writes well, and ends with a chapter giving his own basic critique of THEOCON ideology. Linker has obviously come to believe that the Theocon ideology presents a real danger to America. How serious this danger really is, and how effective the Theocons have been in their grasping for power, will be matters for continued discussion. But the efforts of Neuhaus and this movement need to be understood, and this book is definitely the place to begin.
Compelling and insightful.......2006-10-14
Damon Linker's fascinating monograph is both compelling and insightful, having been in the midst of things as editor of the rightwing Catholic magazine "First Things." This book does not reek with "sour grapes," but is a provocative wake-up call to serious observers of the American cultural and political scene. As an historian, I am impressed by the first-rate prose and organization of this book, not to mention what I perceive as a successful argument and finish. Linker's book is a good companion to Michelle Goldberg's recent book on the religious right and its threat to American democracy and the separation of religion and government (Church and State in the old way of speaking). Hopefully people will apply critical thinking and intellectual honesty to the issues Damon Linker raises.
