Love him or hate him, no matter how you feel about Bill Gates, you've got to respect him. As the richest man in the world and leader of the most successful company of our day, Gates has achieved a level of success that even the Almighty might be jealous of. In Bill Gates Speaks, Janet Lowe captures much of the Gates legend by weaving together stories and quotes attributed to Gates in speeches, newspapers, and interviews in a short and easy-to-read volume. The book covers everything from Gates's time at Harvard to the construction of his "home" on the shores of Lake Washington near Seattle. The result is a well-rounded look at the man who has helped to shape our present more than any other individual alive today. --Harry C. Edwards

3 out of 5 stars Nothing "Original" But Still A Good Book for Young Teens.......2003-06-08

This is one of a series of books that covers highly successful, highly visible individuals and how they got that way. These books are targeted at school age teens to inspire them to follow their paths for success. The author seems to cover the life stories of Bill Gates and adds quotes where appropriate to boost the storyline. There are occasional segments on subjects related to Gates as shown in the Amazon's "Look in" review. It's an easy read with only 230 pages. If you read any of the other books such as "Gates" or "Hard Drive" you'll get the feeling of reading this book before. Since the work isn't original and seems to heavily reference other books I give it 3 stars. The only question I have is whether the author actual sat down with Bill Gates and talked to him or did she really just go to the library, the Internet, etc. to get info on the book. As a first book on Bill Gates life, it's still a good read for young adults looking to be inspired.

2 out of 5 stars It's just a sumary of other books.......2001-04-27

It's an easy to read story of Gates, but there's nothing new here. In fact, the whole book is made up of quotes from other books and articles. You can't really tell if they are taken out of context or not. There's just not much original stuff here.

2 out of 5 stars No Meat To This BooK!.......2001-01-18

I like to be told a story. Although the book starts with a good story on how Bill Gates got started, it quickly digresses. This book is an accumulation of facts and boring accounts about Bill Gates and Microsoft. It never gets into the meat of things. I would have liked to have read more about the litigations against Microsoft. Maybe some more about Nescape's lawsuit. It mentions very little about the Antitrust lawsuit that I was looking forward to learning about. Instead we get quotes from Bill Gates that do not enhance the book, but instead interrupt it. The author references websites about Microsoft's and the government's claims about the lawsuit. It's like the author got lazy. Don't waste your money on this book. A very big dissapointment!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2000-10-24

While this book was well written, I was dissapointed with what I learned about Bill Gates. There was not enough detail and the book was pieced together from a number of different quotes, which is ok for many biographies but the extent of the number of quotes compared to the varied sources did not complete the picture.

The books cover claimed 'Insight From The Worlds Greatest Entrepreneur' but I did not feel an insight.

Despite the above, if you like Bill Gates and want to learn a little more about him, I recommend this book. There are some fun stories and some things to be learned about the man. It is put together nicely, it makes a high claim but does not completely deliver on this claim.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling "biography".......2000-04-08

I met and spoke to Mssr. Gates six years ago and he came across as very smart and very down-to-earth. This book captures the thoughts and actions of this genius very well. It's easy and pleasant to read, unlike other boring biographies (and Gates' own books :). I think it also gives the readers plenty to think about.

Tossing aside a mundane and meaningless job, Daniel Duane went to Santa Cruz, California, to surf for year. The book he wrote about it, Caught Inside is something of a Walden of our times. It's wonderfully written, weaving wave wisdom with literary and historical references. And it's not for surfers only: even readers who have never seen the surf will find themselves taken up in the book's rhythms.

Duane sought the peace that surfing offers, and his impressions of surfing characters, sea life (otters, seals, and the great white shark everyone fears is right under you as you paddle your board), and the seasons by the sea are evocative and soothing to read.

Book Description

A wondrous, uproarious, and surprisingly informative account of a year spend surfing, Caught Inside marks the arrival of an exuberant new voice of the outdoors. This remarkable narrative of Daniel Duane’s life on the water is enhanced by good-humored explanations of the physics of wave dynamics, the intricate art of surfboard design, and lyrical, sharp-eyed descriptions of the flora and fauna of the Pacific wilderness. From Captain Cook and Mark Twain to Robinson Jeffers and Jack London, from portraits of famous (and infamous) surfers to an analysis of Gidget’s perverse significance, Duane expertly uncovers the myths and symbols bound up in one of our most vibrant and recognizably American subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Take me away..........2007-03-19

I haven't finished the book yet, but as far as I am concerned, this book deserves all the 5 stars I gave it!
I live in a place surrounded by mountains, where people are very narrow-minded, and distant sooo many miles from my beloved USA; therefore, I am always looking for a book that keeps me company during the cold months of winter that separates me from my summer vacation in California.
I need this to keep my mind occupied, and I definitely enjoy books that can describe the coast and the deep feelings and believings of surfers so thoroughly.
What I particularly appreciate about this book is the way he describes the surfing and other facts (history, sharks and otters ways of living, etc.) related to the life of a surfer.
I definitely recommend this book, you gotta give it a try!

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2006-04-15

What a total waste of time this book was. I read, or should I say endured, about 60-pages of it before wanting to throw it out a closed window. No story-line, just some incoherent ramblings. He would have been better to take the year off and do a creative writing course.

2 out of 5 stars Over Rated.......2005-06-12

This book is ok - not excellent - if you give it 5 stars you really need to read some more books. It is somewhat interesting in describing the life of a surfer but its extremely repetitive, it drags on and its lacking in any action and that certain something that seperates the wheat from the chafe.

You can almost feel the editor saying we need to spice this up - what about sharks - so there are forays into sharks and surfers. It gets ridiculous when he writes about being scared to pee in the water because a great white will smell it and come in and chomp you. Yes - that is really a huge concern I think 100 surfers were eaten by great whites last after they peed in the ocean.

If you are going to read this book - read the first few chapters and then put it down because the book, you won't miss anything later on - except for silly shark myths.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams and books........2005-05-26

Look, If you want to read a book about the important aspects of life, more important than making money and going to school (sure it seems impossible and even I have fallen into the monotonous doldrum of capitalist existance) read this memoir. It will teach you life. I've read it 3 times over the past year and each time my yearning for the coast grows. Unfortunately I'm stuck in Cleveland, Ohio and all I have are dreams and books.

5 out of 5 stars Dead on.......2005-05-13

Daniel Duane got it right in "Caught Inside". I know the neighborhood well and the town and coast that the author describes. I am a local. It is a time and place well observed and thoughtfully related. If you don't surf, don't be put off by the title. It is even better if you do surf, as you will recognize some of the characters in the book and the rich experiences in the water. With wry wit and enthusiasm, the tale unfolds of a year spent in the pure pursuit of living. By the way, it's freezing here, the surf sucks and the water is full of sharks.

Here is a beautiful companion piece to Smilla's Sense of Snow. Whether you're a fan of Peter Hoeg's novel, Bille August's film adaptation, or both, you'll be delighted by this book. It contains every word of Ann Biderman's film script and hundreds of color photographs. It also features interviews with all the major cast members, a history of Greenland, articles on the film's production by major members of the crew, and, best of all, a 20-page transcript of a revealing dialogue between August and Hoeg about the themes of the book and the making of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Smilla's Sense of Snow - making the movie.......2007-04-11

This is a very interesting book. It has the movie script, which turned out to be a little different in the movie itself. It helped me to understand finer details that I had missed in the movie. I also found the images of Greenland quite breathtaking. It is a beautiful, powerful landscape and the actors and film makers had an appreciation for the landscape and the people that I found nourishing.

4 out of 5 stars Nice quick read.......2007-01-09

This book had lots of good stories. It didn't get very much into specifics though; it mostly dwelled on how each business became something no one though it would be.

5 out of 5 stars Every business has a different beginning.......2006-10-31

I thought this book was interesting. Some companies I'd never heard of and some I knew well. I don't think it was meant as a complete education on starting a business but what I do think it was meant for AND what it accomplished was no two businesses (or people) are created the same way. It's for people who need to know that just because Phil Knight started selling sneakers out of his car is not the only way to start a business. It was also interesting to read about some people who were tricked or gave up control of their companies. That even the most successful companies out there had "drama". I know as a business owner when or if it's time for me to sell or take on investors I will be more aware of what control I sell or give up.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read & Interesting.......2006-09-26

This book was enjoyable and an easy read. Several businesses that I had not heard and all had interesting stories of how the business was started. This book will excite any Entrepreneur.

5 out of 5 stars Enough to make you an esoteric in parties!.......2006-09-18

Never the original purpose of the authors, this book enables you to have dialogs with anyone you meet in any business gathering. It's 100 books on successful brands combined. I like it because typical books on single brands' success "stories" are mostly written by the non-founders. They all end up sitting somewhere on your bookshelf, unfinished, because of the unnecessary (and mostly dull) details plus the authors' second-guesses of the founders' original intents.

On the contrary, this book is written in a reporter's perspective, with no "MSG" added. Covering all the big brands and a few you don't (or I don't) know. Though each brand has only 3 to 4 pages of coverage, it has all you want to know plus some uncommon interesting details even for common brands. Perfect preachers for "Less is more".

Indeed, who on earth today is interested in 800-page details of one single brand while 777 of them are only author's views of the founder's?

          5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2006-07-27

In all my years of scouring the bookshops and newsagencies for books to assist my dream to think up the ideal business I have never seen a better book. I loved reading about totally different products and think that they all came from the minds of very ordinary people.

4 out of 5 stars A Better Time and Place.......2006-08-26

Elmer Keith is a legend of the American West and of firearms. He was a contemporary of Charles Askins (Unrepentent Sinner) and of many of the other greats of American firearm experts.

I never met him though had I known how close I was to him during the late 1970s, I would have made the effort to meet him. Elmer was typical of the classic western male of the early to mid-1900s. The effete, feminized, modern urban male will classify him as arrogant and a braggart. This is understandable, yet regrettable, because the modern male understands nothing of committment to anything except their own self-interest and comfort. They do not understand conviction or character. Elmer had plenty of both.

I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I first read it in the late 1980s in a borrowed book. I enjoyed it now even more. I was dismayed at the amount of carnage in the hunting stories he provided. The number of wounded game and the multiple shots required to kill game as they suffered and fled is tragic. The needless suffering of hunted and trapped animals is disturbing. But, it must be kept in mind that these were different times and trapping and hunting as a means of survival is far different from the motivation of most hunters and trappers of today. I could not even read Chapter 7 because of the accounts of the slaughter of African game, especially the elephants.

The most compelling portions of Elmer's memoir are his accounts of the broncs he rode, the country he saw, his encounters with incompetent and arrogant law enforcement officials, game wardens and other government bureaucrats like the Forest Service, and his dealing with extraordinary physical pain and suffering. This was one tough son of a bitch (and that is a compliment).

A very noticeable thread in the book is the confrontations with law enforcement officers, especially Idaho game wardens. These accounts further corroborate the conflicts that occurred between Claude Dallas and the same department officials in 1981 ending with Claude shooting and killing two of them. There are also accounts by Elmer of the old time law enforcement officials that understood the differences between good guys and bad guys and encouraged citizens to take action against the bad guys. A far cry from the "obedient street bureaucrats" that assault all citizens with impunity in today's world.

This world, both domestically and internationally would be a better place if more of our population adhered to the values and certitudes of right and wrong that men like Elmer took as a matter of course.

Elmer came up during hard times, but these times were, arguably, among the best years of America. We had a stable and homogenous population that had greater continuity of values and a love and respect for America. The country, especially the West, was less crowded and self-sufficiency and independence with a love of individual liberty was the order of the day. It was a time when a man carried a six-gun and was expected to conduct himself honorably and carried the means of dealing with those who were dishonorable. It was a better time and place.

4 out of 5 stars A bold and bragging autobiography of a tough man.......2006-08-03

Elmer Keith was referred to as the dean of American gun writers and that may have been an honest title. He wrote about cartridges and firearms as much as about hunting and the outdoors.

This is his autobiography; told in his typcal bold and bragging way he was the real life version of type of character that was typified in John Wayne movies. He was truly an American legend. There is a certain amount of bragging and patting himself on the back in his story along with his ability to stretch the barrels on some of his big bore firearms, but it is also a tough and gritty story written with Keith's wry sense of humor.

Elmer Keith was a man who saw the door close on the era of the old west and the ushering in of the new west. He was an anachronism, a nineteenth century man trapped in the twentieth century.

This is not a gun book as such, but a lot of ammo gets expended in the telling of it. All in all, it is a very entertaining read for anyone interested in firearms, hunting and the outdoors.

              5 out of 5 stars The Story of a Man's Man.......2006-03-23

A couple of generations ago, you couldn't have a conversation with someone about big game hunting or big bore cartridges for very long without the name Elmer Keith coming up. Elmer was a man's man, to be sure. In HELL I WAS THERE, Keith has assembled a bit of a personal memoir of so many of his adventures from `back in the day'. Keith was not that great of a writer, but not many could come close to his prowess as a storyteller.

Elmer was a rather prolific writer, with countless articles in gun magazines of the 60's and 70's, and a number of well known books, but this one is by far, my personal favorite. I laughed out loud as the great six-gunner told the story of when he contracted to thin elephant herds in Africa. He used the opportunity to test which weapon was most effective. He determined the .460 Weatherby Mag a poor choice as the slug had such force, it simply passed through the giant beast, making them rather angry, knocked down a few trees and wiped out an African village.

This is a most enjoyable read, as are all of Keith's books, which I would highly recommend for any firearm enthusiast. If you're not of my generation or older, learn what life was like when big game hunting was still fashionable, and almost affordable, from a man who carried a six gun on his side most every day of his life. Elmer Keith was a legend. This is his story.

4 out of 5 stars Rough- hewn memoir of a tough man.......2005-09-20

I picked the book up because I came across so many references to Elmer Keith as I got into handgun sports. The man behind the .44 magnum, etc....
It took me a bit to get into the book because it is kind of a discursive memoir with a bit of a mixed chronology. This is explained by Keith's comments at the end that he dictated the book-- he was urged by many to write his memoirs but didn't want to pound out another book on the typewriter.
But I did get into it and greatly enjoyed it. This guy was tough beyond what most of us can even imagine. Keith talks more about his outdoor life in this book than about the technicalities of his cartridge development. He expresses a few crochets at the end about how the world is going to hell, but he has a point there, too.
A very worthwhile read if you are a traditional outdoorsman, especially.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top 10 reads!.......2002-05-02

From a time in our country when people were not just sheep and actually had to depend on themselves to get by and not the welfare check!!
Elmer Keith inspires all hunters and shooters with The story of his life in a time that we can only dream of and wish for.
This book is a must read over and over again!.

              Book Description

The first novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club is a rollicking tale of small-town peculiarity, dark secrets, and one extraordinary beauty pageant.

When her husband is offered a post at a small university, Maye is only too happy to pack up and leave the relentless Phoenix heat for the lush green quietude of Spaulding, Washington. While she loves the odd little town, there is one thing she didn’t anticipate: just how heartbreaking it would be leaving her friends behind. And when you’re a childless thirtysomething freelance writer who works at home, making new friends can be quite a challenge.

After a series of false starts nearly gets her exiled from town, Maye decides that her last chance to connect with her new neighbors is to enter the annual Sewer Pipe Queen Pageant, a kooky but dead-serious local tradition open to contestants of all ages and genders. Aided by a deranged former pageant queen with one eyebrow, Maye doesn’t just make a splash, she uncovers a sinister mystery that has haunted the town for decades.

“[Laurie Notaro] may be the funniest writer in this solar system.”

5 out of 5 stars The funniest book I've read all year.......2007-10-03

I loved this book from beginning to end. It's about a woman who moves from her hometown to a much smaller town and has trouble making new friends while missing all of the friends she left behind. As Maye, the main character, goes from adventure to adventure trying to find a kindred soul, she stalks people at grocery stores, attends a crazy book club and still comes up empty handed. She decides that the only way to make friends is to become the town Queen at the local, nutty pageant and win the title and the hearts of her neighbors. This book made me laugh out loud on more than several occasions and I could easily relate--I just moved to a new town myself and understood the struggle to create a new circle of friends. Though I doubt I'll take the route Maye did in order to get them, it was a blast reading her trials and tribulations, and I just fell in love with cranky old Ruby. I was sad when it ended, but am looking forward to more of Laurie's work. This book is a great read and is one that I'll keep and most likely re-read when I need a good, fun story.

              1 out of 5 stars i guess I read a different book.......2007-10-03

first to say I have read and enjoyed Laurie's other writing. She can be really funny. that being said this is the worst book I have read this year. It feels forced and stilted in it's descriptions. I didn't laugh even once and had to force myself to finish. I feel like I read a different book than most reviewers. Stay with the non-fiction Laurie.

              5 out of 5 stars A delightful, hilarious story!.......2007-09-14

I bought Laurie's book when it came out in May but did not have a chance to read it until this week. I read half of it on a plane ride to Ohio, and the other half the way back. I couldn't stop, I loved it so much!! This book really shows off Laurie's gift as a writer, she can do non-fiction AND fiction and not lose any of her magic. I fell in love with Maye, and her misadventures had me giggling from seat 20E all the way home. I truly hope Laurie writes another novel very, very soon!!! Viva la Bonnie!!!

              4 out of 5 stars Still a good laugh!.......2007-08-26

I can't recommend Laurie's previous books enough. Just the mention of her name puts an idiotic smile on my face! "There's a (slight) chance" is a bit of a departure for me, but still enjoyable. Whereas all the other books flow with complete abandon this one seems a little forced, maybe trying a bit too hard to be comical. Laurie's detailed description of Ruby Spicer and Rowena Spaulding (two of the novels main characters) makes me think these chicks really exist... You'll have to convince me otherwise!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Fiction Debut.......2007-08-23

Delightful fiction debut for Laurie Notaro. I really enjoyed this very funny book full of typical Notaro descriptions. I love it when authors actually have a beginning, middle and end to their stories.

                              Book Description

Since 9/11, America has gained a new appreciation of its heroes, something that had been lost for many years due to the conflicted emotions produced by the Viet Nam War. What is a hero? In a media-saturated culture, which seems to venerate shallow celebrity idols and false heroics, it is worthwhile to revisit the true heroes of our history.

Robert Skimin, a former paratrooper, army aviator, and artillery officer during his twenty years of military service, offers a compelling look at American history by tracing the life paths of its heroes and heroines. While many of the well-known heroes of history are included here, Skimin's unique account provides memorable vignettes and anecdotes, which bring the careers and contributions of these remarkable people to life. He also includes stories about more obscure heroes, whose courage was often as great as that of the most famous icons of history: for example, a Mexican-American kid who escaped a barrio gang to become one of the most impressive heroes of military history; and the Japanese American young men who created the most decorated unit ever while their parents were incarcerated in U.S. concentration camps. Skimin also discusses such questionable heroes as George Armstrong Custer, whose little-known brother, Tom, was a two-time Medal of Honor winner.

A Pulitzer Prize nominee for his novel Apache Autumn, Skimin has a knack for telling a page-turning story. Footprints of Heroes is a fascinating tour through America's wars, highlighting the service of those who went beyond the call of duty and left an example that is a lasting inspiration for us all.

5 out of 5 stars A difficult, but great book to write........2006-04-04

Yes, I'm the author, and yes, I'm giving it five stars because I think it's an important book at this time of strife in our country. By creating an anecdotal account of only some of our heroes (real heroes--not rock stars, movies actors, or athletes) I've also been able to assemble a short history of our country from the revolution on. While some ridicule true heroism, particularly in the military, I think it's important for our youth to know about their heritage--to know about responsibility...for that's what heroism boils down to usually. This country was built and defended by responsible people, and we should be proud of them--well-known, or obscure. Unfortunately, so many could not be included. I think this work, my 17th published book, belongs on every general library shelf in the country, but then, I'm a patriot! --Robert Skimin, Major, USA (Ret.)

I reviewed this book for the US Army Historical Foundation. I found the book to be a great read.

One that I couldn't put down once I started.

It should be within the styles of Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation series and books also written by Stephen Ambrose. The book provides an underlying answer to the "old age" question, "Where are our Heroes of today?".

Given examples of even today's heroes clear cut everyday people the book proves it's case that heroes walk among us and not only in a military uniform.

Bob Skimin has undertaken the herculean task of presenting us with vignettes of heroes throughout America's history. He does this with expertise and a deft touch, to leave us with memories of how ordinary (and not so ordinary) men (and women)have transcended their mortal limits and performed courageous deeds. No matter your race, creed, sex, family upbringing, or a host of other factors which might seem to have an effect on bravery, this book will grab your attention and inspire you with stories of heroes from all walks of life and at varied times in our Nation's history. I give this book a max rating...you won't be disappointed.

In "Earth for Sale", social ecologist Brian Tokar brilliantly exposes the co-opting of mainstream environmental organizations by corporate interests, then outlines alternative strategies and theories for preserving the earth. Activists involved in environmental justice campaigns, organic agriculture and/or forest issues will glean much wisdom from this intelligent book. Importantly, like Murray Bookchin, Brian Tokar does not pit labor against the trees, but instead offers a holistic vision of ecological and economic solidarity, thus healing the rupture between human communities and the land.
