      Book Description

Tom Thurston has written the first biography of one of Canada's athletic legends, Doug Hepburn. Born in Vancouver with a club foot and a severe alternating squint, Doug decided as a boy to surmount his disabilities by training with weights, setting his sights on becoming the world's strongest man. And this he achieved. Doug is now known as the grandfather of modern power weightlifting. He was World Weightlifting Champion in Stockholm in 1953, and he won the gold medal in the British Empire Games in Vancouver in 1954. In addition, Doug went on to become an eloquent advocate for drug-free sport, and he made a reputation as an inventor. For those interested in building a super-strong body that will last well into old age, Doug's complete, drug-free training secrets are revealed in a way that are easy to understand and employ. For those looking for the inspiration to tackle some of their own goals, Doug Hepburn presents a splendid role model. Thurston's biography does justice to every aspect of Doug's life, illuminating the fortitude with which he met his many challenges. Includes many black and white photographs.

      1 out of 5 stars strongman.......2006-08-14

One of the most depressing, sad books I have ever read. Hepburn was to be admired for his feats of strength, but saddened at his personal life. He was waiting for someone or something to either show him what to do with his life,or actually provide for him. What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars A great mental strength resulted in physical strength.......2005-07-31

STRONGMAN, THE DOUG HEPBURN STORY was a book I could not put down once I started reading it.

I was aware of world champion strongman Doug Hepburn and was excited upon noticing his name and freight-train physique upon the attractive book cover. What was fascinating about Hepburn was that while the world was aware of his physical strength, it was his mental strength and determination that was even more paramount. What could fuel such an obsession? A deformed leg was an insecurity he fought to overcome.

When Doug first traveled to New York City to display his power to the American strength community I found myself visualizing that I was riding in the train with him. In New York it was one thing to witness the poundage this massive man could lift, but even better watching the look of awe on the faces of the strength crowd watching as they realized this man had no match. This trip to New York City was a necessary confidence step in Hepburn's climb to winning the World Championship in Sweden in 1953.

The insecurities to succeed to the top of the weight-lifting world continued to enigma Hepburn as his life continued. I thank Doug for his illumination as he explained how his LSD therapy in the early sixties made him aware of how negatives from childhood stay embedded in a person's conscience and it is up to each of us to attempt to eliminate these adversities as best as possible.

I found STRONGMAN, THE DOUG HEPBURN STORY both entertaining and motivational, a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Doug Hepburn: one of a kind.......2005-07-07

You don't get to read about athletes like Doug Hepburn much these days. I'm talking about the kind of athlete who makes it to the top of his sport with no motivation other than the pure love of the sport, and the outright desire to just do it. In Strongman, Tom Thurston has captured the essence of Doug and I found the book to be a great read.

This book is a 'must read' for anyone trying to uncover the secrets of success in sports, or in life itself. I knew Doug personally, and I recall a conversation I had with him regarding the mental barriers that can prevent regular gains in weightlifting. I asked him specifically what to do about that. Doug put it simply, "it depends how badly you want to lift the weight".

That succinct statement eludes many athletes. They get so caught up in tactics and theory, they forget about the human spirit and the power of the mind itself. Doug wasn't advocating anything silly, like pushing through serious pain. He was referring to the little tricks the mind can play to set up a barrier to improvement. We're talking about sucking it up in order to get to the next level. Doug was a master of that and Tom Thurston captures that indominatible spirit in his book.

I thought I knew a lot about Doug until I read Strongman. Through Tom Thurston's painstaking research I now realize there was a lot more to the man. Doug was a humourous, self-effacing, likeable character and the last thing you'd see in him was a man who destroyed world records and won Olympic Gold Medals. What I had not realized was the incredible struggle behind his success.

That makes Doug all the more amazing in my mind and I strongly recommend this book.

Strongman - the Doug Hepburn Story
      by Tom Thurston

Tom Thurston's aptly titled biography of Doug Hepburn, Strongman, is a telling tale of one man's aspirations to greatness, while struggling with the material world. For me, this book represents a very humanizing portrait of an inspiring boyhood hero from the fifties. Doug wrestled with the temptations of being exploited into the image of a larger than life, plastic fantastic, comic book like action figure. It is the story of one very human being. Combining insightful sensitivity with brutal reality, Tom delivers a penetrating study into Doug's indomitable spirit.

This book is a must read, from those casually interested in fitness to the competing athlete. This is the story about one man who actually did live by the creed: no tricks, not gear, not drugs.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!!!!.......2004-05-25

Hello! I'm a 26 year old weightlifter, and had heard the name Doug Hepburn a few times in strength and bodybuilding magazines. However, I really didnt know much about the man until I purchased this book. I can honestly say, this man's story was inspiring and yet sad at times. It's one of the best reads I've had in a while, and those who are involved in weight training will want to pick up a copy of this book.

I really came away feeling inspired and grateful. With all the hogwash out there written by juiced-up "athletes," it's good to know people like Mr. Hepburn were truly the strongest of the strong naturally and that it IS possible to become strong without chemicals. Had I known of him years ago before his passing, he truly would have been someone I'd want to meet in person.

Also, many thanks to the book's author, Mr. Tom Thurston, who took the time to respond to my letter and answer my questions.

            Book Description

When Leah Hinchcliff played her guitar in a fourth grade talent show, a male classmate said, "You can't play guitar because you're a girl." Erin O'Hara was ignored by music store employees, who the answers to O'Hara's technical questions toward her husband. "I don't work in music," he finally protested. "Tell her."

Although women have been writing and performing rock music for decades, little has been written about their relationship to the industry and how they construct identities as rock `n' roll artists. Girls Rock! examines the determination, motivation, and passion of the female rock and rollers working in a male-dominated field. Whether learning an instrument, starting a garage band, or headlining a stadium concert, women are taking an increasingly visible and feminist stand in the music business and inspiring audiences, other musicians, and fans all over the world.

In telling the stories of a broad spectrum of women performers, authors Mina Carson, Tisa Lewis, and Susan M. Shaw bring together history, feminist analysis, and developmental theory to look at how and why women have become rock musicians. Spanning a half century of music history, Girls Rock! recounts the experiences and insights of top stars as well as up-and-coming performers and music professionals. The contributions of prominent musicians such as Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls are examined alongside the experiences of women hauling newly bought electric guitars, basses, and drumsticks to Portland to attend the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls and take the first steps toward their dream of making it in rock.

Combining interviews with dozens of women in rock, observation of live performances, and research in social, developmental, and feminist theory, the authors celebrate what female musicians have come to understand about their experiences as women, artists, and rock musicians and how they have influenced broader trends in rock `n' roll. From Wanda Jackson's revolutionary act of picking up a guitar to the current success of independent artists such as Ani DiFranco and Jonatha Brooke, Girls Rock! is an insider's look at women in rock `n' roll that examines the shared threads of these performers' lives and the evolution of women's roles in rock music since the 1950s.

This is a game's collection of the first World Correspondence Chess Champion from the ICCF. It contains 52 games played between 1934 and 1956, it lists 53 but the gamescore for Wolfers - Purdy is given as unavailable. Of the 52, 26 are annotated by Purdy, 11 by Frank Hutchings and 7 by Kevin Harrison. The co-authors made use of Purdy's notes as available. Eight of the games are unannotated. Purdy was an OTB IM, a GM at Correspodence Chess, and a prolific writer. He regarded OTB chess as "relatively superficial" and correspondence chess as closer to art. He wrote that correspondence chess allowed one to "possess a really deep understanding of the game, and a capacity to play nearly perfect chess when not beset with the handicaps of crossboard play." Purdy exemplified this statement by losing only two games over his entire competitive career and being undefeated for a period of nearly fifteen years. Purdy thought that miscalculations were inevitable in OTB chess and that correspondence chess players have "the time to analyze deeply and the incentive to take that time." Indeed, in one of his games he tempts his opponent into playing a freeing move, because he saw a win nearly twenty moves deep. An original document of Purdy's analysis shows him considering twenty alternatives on his fortieth move in a major piece ending with three pawns apiece. In an another game, indicative of his eagerness to examine the exception to the rule, Purdy accepts double pawns and four pawn islands, compared to Black's two, to display the power of his Bishop pair. He later sacrifices an exchange, doubling yet another set of pawns, to force home the win. Many of the games are just masterful. The centerpiece of the book has to be the game Bigot - Purdy, which Purdy titled "The Hardest Game of My Life" and designated, according to Tim Harding in Winning at Correspondence Chess, as "the best and most important" game in his chess career. A premature pawn advance at move 13 gives Purdy grim prospects. He toughs out the middlegame at the brink of defeat to find an incredible move resulting in a self-pin. Then down by a pawn in a drawn ending, he swindles his opponent into an inferior continuation by the judicious use of conditional moves and wins. The whole game is annotated over eight pages and includes some analysis busting by Fritz3 published in the magazine Correspondence Chess #131. There are three other games that are each annotated over 7-8 pages as well. When self-improvement books suggest playing over well-annotated games of the masters - this is the kind that they are referring to. After winning the world championship Purdy retired from correspondence play and returned to OTB competition. In fact he died at an OTB competition. His last words being, "I have a win but it will take some time." The openings, some albeit old fashioned, vary widely. Purdy mostly played 1.e4, but also 1.d4 and 1.c4. As Black he played the Slav, the QGD, the Nimzo-Indian, and the Gruenfeld against 1.d4 and he heartily adhered to double king pawn openings versus 1.e4. There is one conundrum. On page thirteen it lists Purdy's competitive record as 34 wins, 10 draws, and 2 losses, or 46 games. It is clear that they are not including four off-hand games played before Purdy began his correspondence career as otherwise his losses would be doubled and if you discount the one game played after his retirement your still left with 48 games (53 minus 5). Also, the game Purdy - Frantzen incorrectly awards the win to Black. The layout is well organized and the type is easy to read. The diagrams are distinct and an appropriate size. Apparently only one is flawed. The cover is colorful and elegantly designed. There is an index of openings, some games are cross-referenced, and all opponents are listed on the content page. Whether you're interested in C.J.S. Purdy, correspondence chess, or simply in playing winning chess, this book is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Another Purdy Classic.......1998-07-10

Just published(May/June 98) and a fine addition to the Purdy material promised by Thinker's Press. Print, layout, diagrams and proofreading are typical of tpi/Chessco/Bob Long - EXCELLENT. The material is just as good. The games are mainly from Purdy's win of the first World Postal Chess Championship. The playdowns etc began 1947/48 and his win was confirmed in 1953 after playing and beating the cream of correspondence players. His analysis is DEEP and ACCURATE and the editing by his son-in-law Frank Hutchings and others has been done with care and a professionalism that can only be admired. A welcome addition to the line of books that his widow Ann Purdy wanted so much. BUY IT.

I enjoyed this book. It was an easy read book that gave good examples and good advice. Many times there were situations mentioned that I would have never thought would have mattered in a business environment. I learned many things on how to handle myself and appearance in a professional way. Many of the things mentioned in the book are easy to implement and take little time, others are larger. I would recommend this book to every student before entering the business work place.

                          Book Description

Elvis Costello is undoubtedly one of the most important and challenging musicians of the last thirty years. Complicated Shadows paints a detailed portrait of an intensely private, complex, and creatively restless individual. It draws on a wealth of new research, including exclusive interviews with people from all stages of Costello's life and career: classmates, friends, members of his early bands, former lovers, members of the Attractions, producers, and various collaborators. Complicated Shadows reveals the circumstances surrounding his marriages to ex-Pogues bassist Cait O'Riordan and jazz singer Diana Krall, and the bitter breakup of his long-term backing band, the Attractions. Costello's "coiled tight" personality and penchant for outrageous candor set the tone for a frenetic, and aesthetically inventive, independent band. Their independence is epitomized by their infamous 1977 Saturday Night Live appearance (replacing the Sex Pistols, who dropped out) when Costello cut short the scheduled song, "Less Than Zero," then directed the band to play the as-of-yet unreleased "Radio Radio." Costello didn't appear on live U.S. television again until the 1980s. Complicated Shadows contains a full examination and analysis of the entirety of Costello's vast and varied musical output, both in the studio and on the stage.

I have never bothered to write a review.

That's how bad this book is.

This is NOT a biography. It consists almost entirely of setlists and credits put in prose form.

There is almost no insight into either the man or his songs.

Obviously, Elvis and his friends and family generally refused to cooperate with the writing of this book. So, I understand the author was hard-pressed to provide any real details. What he does is simply organize various material from OTHER sources (magzine reviews, interviews, etc.) which makes for really not much.

I'm not joking. The book consists almost entirely of what songs were played at what shows and who played what on recordings.

                          B-O-R-I-N-G.

3 out of 5 stars Searching for the Man out of Time.......2005-11-02

I can think of few tasks more daunting than deconstructing Elvis Costello. While Elvis has autobiographed his own musical journey via extensive CD reissue liner notes, he and those closest too him have remained respectfully tight-lipped with regard to his personal life. Perhaps that's just as well. I've always felt that the bloodlines between personal drama and artistic inspiration are more intriguing when left untelegraphed. Still, when it comes to a man who's written some of the most self-depricating lyrics ever conjoined to a pop melody, a bit of curiousity must be afforded.

In this particular book, Graeme Thomson does a commendable job of extracting new insights from several sources, including Flip City-era collaborators and post-Attraction session men like the mighty Marc Ribot. The juicy tidbits come, predictably, from Bebe Buell; rock n' roll's all-time kiss n' tell groupie, as well as Costello arch-nemisis and former Attraction Bruce Thomas. We learn how the roots of self-opportunism formed early in Mr. McManus, via a lemonade commercial, and how a painful string of incidents in the mid-80s led to his embittered estrangement from Ms. Buell, his first wife Mary, and the Attractions. More sympathetic material arrives in later chapters, which detail his widening musical interests and his penchant for unabashed risk-taking in both studio and concert. The overall portrait is of an artist who seeks nothing less than the freedom to express the varied and shifting strains of his musical ambitions. When denied that freedom, he can be petulant and meglomaniacal. When granted it, he is capable of masterwork.

3 out of 5 stars More Aptly Titled: the Music of Elvis Costello.......2005-08-27

Elvis is my all-time favourite musician and I really was looking for a book about the life of Elvis. Complicated Shadows is a thorough treatment of the music of Elvis Costello, delving into his upbringing in a musical household through to about 2004. In all it is a scholarly treatise. Like many scholarly endeavors, it comes across as dry in spots.

I don't want to shoot the messenger, but unfortunately Graeme Thomson had the auspicious and daunting task of writing about a very reclusive and private person. As such, almost (if not) all parts of the book are second-hand accounts of the man, focusing mostly on his music rather than himself since he remains to this day a shadowy subject. I did not get the sense that Mr. Thomson was ever able to have any sort of direct meaningful conversation with Elvis.

If you are interested in knowing the exact order of songs played at a particular venue in 1987, you are in for a treat. As for me, I tired of the musical critique, setlists, and comparisons to other songs (and especially the overuse of the word "pastiche") and was hoping to learn more about the person. Graeme Thomson is obviously a big Elvis fan, but even he was not able to penetrate the layers of veils around his life to delve more into personal matters. It's like trying to learn of someone solely based on their works rather than directly talking and interviewing the person.

I was glad I got the book from a library as I would have felt bad paying for it. As I read the last words and finished the book, I felt I had learned just a bit more of the man, but he really does remain in the shadows.

Resurrecting a forgotten chapter in transatlantic history, James G. Cusick tells how, just before the United States went to war against Great Britain in 1812, an ill-advised invasion of a Spanish colony became a stage on which the young republic clumsily acted out its imperial ambitions and racial fears. With the halfhearted backing of President James Madison and Secretary of State James Monroe, a party of Georgians invaded East Florida, confident that partisans there would help them swiftly wrest the colony away from Spain. The raid was a strategic and political disaster. Few sympathizers materialized, official U.S. support dissolved, and an extended guerrilla war ensued.

This was the "other war of 1812," or the Patriot War. Cusick, a lively storyteller as well as a meticulous scholar, conveys the savagery of the borderlands conflict that pitted American adventurers and anti-Spanish partisans against Spanish loyalists and their allies, who included Seminole Indians and escaped slaves. At the same time, Cusick looks at the American motivations behind the invasion, including apprehensions about Florida's growing population of unregulated blacks and geopolitical intrigues involving Spain, Britain, and France.

                                Book Description

Catherine Boone examines political regionalism in Africa and how it affects forms of government, and prospects for democracy and development. Boone's study is set within the context of larger theories of political development in agrarian societies. It features a series of compelling case studies that focus on regions within Senegal, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire and ranges from 1930 to the present. The book will be of interest to readers concerned with comparative politics, Africa, development, regionalism and federalism, and ethnic politics.

                                  Book Description

"This is an important and comprehensive book that is timely, original, and of uniformly high quality. There is relatively little familiarity outside of Mexico with the incredibly rich experience of community forest management there. Certainly no comprehensive review such as this book exists that covers so many aspects of the subject. . . . The book will appeal to scholars from both social and biophysical sciences interested in forest management and in broader conservation and development issues."

—Marianne Schmink, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies Tropical Conservation and Development Program, University of Florida

Mexico leads the world in community management of forests for the commercial production of timber. Yet this success story is not widely known, even in Mexico, despite the fact that communities around the globe are increasingly involved in managing their own forest resources. To assess the achievements and shortcomings of Mexico's community forest management programs and to offer approaches that can be applied in other parts of the world, this book collects fourteen articles that explore community forest management from historical, policy, economic, ecological, sociological, and political perspectives.

The contributors to this book are established researchers in the field, as well as many of the important actors in Mexico's nongovernmental organization sector. Some articles are case studies of community forest management programs in the states of Michoacán, Oaxaca, Durango, Quintana Roo, and Guerrero. Others provide broader historical and contemporary overviews of various aspects of community forest management. As a whole, this volume clearly establishes that the community forest sector in Mexico is large, diverse, and has achieved unusual maturity in doing what communities in the rest of the world are only beginning to explore: how to balance community income with forest conservation. In this process, Mexican communities are also managing for sustainable landscapes and livelihoods.
