      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book.......2005-07-28

This is the best sports book I have read. It is a great insight into arguably the best manager ever in the history of soccer. I always respected Sir Alex Ferguson anyway, but after reading this book, I even have more respect for his tactics and especially his ethical approach to life in general. Whether you are a soccer coach yourself, just a sports fan, or a business manager looking for insight into how to manage people better you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for all United fans!.......2005-06-30

Being a soccer fan of the club Manchester United for 15 years, this book is truly a revealing account inside the mind of one of the greatest soccer managers of British Football.

This autobiography shows how a seemingly ordinary man was able to achieve phenomenal success in his managerial career. Alex HATES to be on the losing side and this is a major motivation for him to achieve success constantly on the pitch and on his personal life.

I would love to recommend this book to all Manchester United fans as well as sports psychologists and people working in a competitive environment. To achieve success (in whatever field), one MUST have confidence in his/her own ability and take on the world like a soldier on the battlefield. People with low self-esteem should read this book to bring out their own competitive nature.

Finally, the statistics which show Alex Ferguson's playing and managerial record (at the end of the book) is indeed invaluable to the true soccer fan. This provides the "icing on the cake" for this honest work of brilliance by Ferguson.

      3 out of 5 stars Great Legend..But.........2004-09-06

Sir Alex is one of the 2 greatest managers in the history of MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB and some might even day of English football all together but is it enough to make an intresting and informative book? I think not. As much as sir Alex is part of my life and my history as a United supporter, there are more intresting things than a Managers life.

5 out of 5 stars great book and great manager.......2004-05-11

having worked with sir alex i can say hes the best there is. players love working for him. he tells it how it is and is always fair.

      1 out of 5 stars Fergie's book.......2004-03-20

A distinctly average book, by a very average man. Nothing special here at all. Go for something worthwhile like David Beckham's book. Or the Tweenies....

        Book Description

In High Contrast, Sharon Willis examines the dynamic relationships between racial and sexual difference in Hollywood film from the 1980s and 1990s. Seizing on the way these differences are accentuated, sensationalized, and eroticized on screen—most often with little apparent regard for the political context in which they operate—Willis restores that context through close readings of a range of movies from cinematic blockbusters to the work of the new auteurs, Spike Lee, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino.
Capturing the political complexity of these films, Willis argues that race, gender, and sexuality, as they are figured in the fantasy of popular film, do not function separately, but rather inform and determine each other’s meaning. She demonstrates how collective anxieties regarding social difference are mapped onto big budget movies like the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series, Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, Thelma and Louise, Terminator 2, and others. Analyzing the artistic styles of directors Lynch, Tarantino, and Lee, in such films as Wild at Heart, Pulp Fiction, and Do the Right Thing, she investigates how these interactions of difference are linked to the production of specific authorial styles, and how race functions for each of these directors, particularly in relation to gender identity, erotics, and fantasy.

1 out of 5 stars Prima drops the ball.......2004-05-25

I must say that I've been playing Zelda games since 1987 when the first one was released. I've been using Prima guides for Zelda games since the first book came out in the early 90s covering "A Link to the Past". Since then I've been using Prima Guides ever since after beating the Zelda games at least once in order to find the secrets I just couldn't find prior, and I have always found Prima to be the BEST at making guides, particularly for Zelda games. In fact, I can categorically say that their guide "Link's Awakening DX" is one of the best ever released for any game in the industry.

Now I am faced with two very recent exceptions. One is their guide for "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker", and the other is this guide. In fact, this guide isn't just bad for Prima, it is possibly the worst Zelda guide I have ever tried to use.

As mentioned I had already beaten the games, each twice: Once starting with Oracle of Seasons, and then linking to Oracle of Ages, and then once starting with Oracle of Ages, and linking to Oracle of Seasons. Yet even after beating these games, and knowing most of the secrets and details of both of them, I found this guide EXTREMELY confusing. I couldn't easily map my experience to the guide's content, and often found it in error. It was difficult to view the maps, as they were very small, and usually sectioned off with little context. The details of game play were simply not instructive (or even comparable) to direct game play. The best thing about it was the cartoons, but that is the most cosmetic and least instructive thing about the whole guide.

I suggest skipping this guide altogether. Heck, even the Nintendo Power guide was better than this one. I won't be giving up on Prima, but I hope this latest trend doesn't continue.

its a good guide. I think i could have managed w/o it though.

                            3 out of 5 stars Too confusing.......2002-11-25

I was disappointed in this book. It's too much page flipping. If you don't do EXACTLY what the book says, you get totally lost!!! I quit playing the game early out of frustration. That's just me. OH well.. if you decide to buy this, have patience...

                            1 out of 5 stars I STINKS MAN!!!.......2002-10-11

This book is the WORST zelda book EVER!!! The map are so tiny! I need a microscope to see the it! It make me and my friends so confused! I would suggest to get The Lengend of Zelda oracle of Ages&Seasons from Versus Books.

2 out of 5 stars Could be WAY better.......2002-06-15

I'll list the pros and cons of this book one after the other; hopefully it's not too confusing...

                            Pros:

                            A great enemy list!

                            Okay boss strategies

Only guide so far to use coordinates (I find that fact surprising; the Zelda games are THE games to use coordinates with!)

Has an okay section about passwords

                            Nice cartoons

                            Cons:

Maps are TINY, boundaries not well marked, does not show inside of houses

                            Screenshots are small and blurry

Walkthrough is confusing; it might say something like, "In the next room, push the block and open the chest. In the next room, use the key," and it doesn't give details on WHICH keyhole to use the key on, and WHICH room is the "next" one. The could have used coordinates to their advantage way better than they did

The whole thing is somewhat monotonous

Cartoons, while cool, are VERY distracting. They are just plopped down anywhere; you might be in a section when you're encountering Zoras, and right there is a picture of a Goron!

Some AWFUL typos; it got me all confused about the Harp of Ages. It said that the Tune Of Currents made a temporrary Time Portal, that the Tune of Ages activated Time Portals, and that the Tune of Echoes gave you tital freedom to travel in time. Then it said that you wouldn't get the ToC until later on in the game. The real scoop on the Harp is this: The Tune of Echoes (the frist tune you get) activates Time Portals; the Tune of Currents (the second tune you get) lets you move from the past to the present (it does create a temporary Time Portal, but that's not it's main purpose) and the Tune of Ages lets you go from Past to Present and Present to Past. Those typos really got me mixed up.

Overall, this guide seemed like it was carelessely slapped together, and though it has some stuff you won't find in the Versus Guide, it has a lot more stuff that Versus does WAY better in.

                            5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Read" for Presenters!.......2007-08-04

Thomas Leech's book, How to Prepare, Stage and Deliver Winning Presentations, 3rd Edition, is a 'must read' for any presenter. It applies to all speaking forums - large or small (customers, corporate, Board of Directors, employees and even informal team meetings). The "15 fundamentals" make it easy to learn, practice and refine your skills, resulting in improved, successful presentations.

5 out of 5 stars Best and most complete book on business presentations.......2001-12-16

Thomas Leech is a nationally known consultant on presentation making. In this book he distills his years of experience into a single volume of useful information. The book is packed with tremendously valuable information to make sure that your presentation is a winner.
No stone is left unturned as he goes through a complete system for creating the presentation. Not only are the technical aspects discussed but also gauging your audience and customizing your presentation to meet the needs of the audience. He even covers special problems in presentation such as an international presentation.
This is the best book on putting together a successful presentation that I have seen. Whether you are presenting an position internally to change the direction of a business or externally to generate new business this book is extremely useful. For generating additional business and presentations to potential customers I would recommend using it in combination with Tom Sant's book on Proposal writing. A winning presentation and a winning proposal results in winning business.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I have read on the subject........1999-10-26

While working on an assignment for a graduate level managerial communications class, I browsed several books on business presentations. Mr. Leech's book was the one I chose to use. It provides a wealth of information, while being very readable. Reading this book added to the knowledge I gained from the class. This book will become a valuble part of my business library.

When Mollie Babcock stepped off the train in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1890, she knew she had to start a new life. She'd left her husband and their medical practice in Iowa, and with only a few hundred dollars in her pocket and a great deal of pride, she set out to find a new position as a physician. She was offered a job as doctor to the miners at Bannack, Montana, and thus began her epic adventures in the Rocky Mountain West.

The true story of a medicine woman who found opportunity in the wide-open spaces of America's frontier west, Pioneer Doctor: The Story of a Woman's Work, is not just a beautifully written and thoroughly researched story of a fascinating woman's life. It is also the story of an era when daring women ventured forth and changed history for the rest of us.

3 out of 5 stars Pioneer Doctor Needs more on being a Pioneer Doctor.......2007-05-05

The beginning of this book is simply wonderful. Informative, intriguing, and well written. Sadly, the book then turns into a guide of the suffragette movement. While I believe that women such as Dr. Babcock paved the way for the rewards the women of today (such as myself) have, I didn't want a book on women's lib. I wanted a book on the trials of becoming a doctor, the way medical issues were treated, what medicines were used, all of this in her life time. The first and middle of the book did so and was building up to a superb ending until........
If you are looking for a true medical journal from one of the first female doctors this only partially fills the bill.

4 out of 5 stars This woman was a pioneer in many ways.......2007-01-28

This is the story of one woman's persistence and success against social norms that limited women's role in society in the western US during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Not only was this woman a doctor when there were very few women doctors, she also participated in the womens' suffrage movement in Montana and lived through many social changes in that state.

As the only doctor in a frontier mining town she saw many hard situations and some of the most poignant stories are about her attempts to help and care for the town prostitutes. When the mining boom died in that area, she moved to Helena to open another medical practice and there she joined the sufferage movement.

The book is written in a very readable narrative style and includes information from her personal records and interviews with personal friends and family.

I read this book in just a few hours. Makes quick and easy reading. The material is very well written and very interesting. I recommend for anyone interested in "old west" and/or women's studies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Important events in American History.......2003-03-16

--The War Between the United States and Mexico-- is a work by George Willkins Kendall and has been beautifully illustrated by Carl Nebel. The work in question, is a testimony to American expansionism, and narrates in detail each battle fought in Mexican soil.

Carl Nebel dedicated several years to illustrate the events of the Mexican American War and followed the traveling footsteps of Alexander Von Humboldt in Mexico. Nebel provides a magnificent illustration of one of the most important and hardbreaking moment of Mexican History: September 14, 1847 - the ocupation of The Zocalo.

A very important historical work that helps to understand with great detail and from a different perspective an all important moment in American History. An event that certainly changed the U.S. not only by adding vast new territories (California, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming), but also by taking the first steps on becoming a superpower.

                                          Book Description

Until now political scientists have devoted little attention to the origins of American bureaucracy and the relationship between bureaucratic and interest group politics. In this pioneering book, Daniel Carpenter contributes to our understanding of institutions by presenting a unified study of bureaucratic autonomy in democratic regimes. He focuses on the emergence of bureaucratic policy innovation in the United States during the Progressive Era, asking why the Post Office Department and the Department of Agriculture became politically independent authors of new policy and why the Interior Department did not. To explain these developments, Carpenter offers a new theory of bureaucratic autonomy grounded in organization theory, rational choice models, and network concepts.

According to the author, bureaucracies with unique goals achieve autonomy when their middle-level officials establish reputations among diverse coalitions for effectively providing unique services. These coalitions enable agencies to resist political control and make it costly for politicians to ignore the agencies' ideas. Carpenter assesses his argument through a highly innovative combination of historical narratives, statistical analyses, counterfactuals, and carefully structured policy comparisons. Along the way, he reinterprets the rise of national food and drug regulation, Comstockery and the Progressive anti-vice movement, the emergence of American conservation policy, the ascent of the farm lobby, the creation of postal savings banks and free rural mail delivery, and even the congressional Cannon Revolt of 1910.

This is a must read book for anyone interested in American political development, as long as you don't mind the academic language and narrow focus. As a study on statebuilding it is too narrow, but as a study of the development of bureaucratic autonomy it is a major achievement. In my opinion, Carpenter also shortchanges the antebellum era. It is an excellent compliment to Skowronek's book "Building a New American State." For a different perspective on the 19th centutry American state, see Jensen's book "Patriots, Settlers, and the Origins of American Social Policy" and "Shaped by War and Trade" edited by Katznelson and Shefter.

4 out of 5 stars The work of federal bureau chiefs.......2003-12-15

This book narrates several episodes of executive leadership in the USPO, the USDA, and Department of the Interior during the last decades of the 19th and the early decades of the 20th centuries. The author shows how post office and agriculture department bureau chiefs effectively managed upward, outward, and through their organizations to create public value and thereby gained considerable operating discretion for themselves and their departments and how managerial failures in interior's reclamation bureau resulted in its loss. For students of public management, this book provides case evidence for many of Mark Moore's strongest normative claims. It is first rate, well written, plausible historical narrative. Its weaknesses are too little attention to the creation of public value (perhaps because that would smack too much of normative economics) and far too much attention to issues that could only be of interest to academic political scientists.

2 out of 5 stars An amazing subject given short shrift........2004-12-29

Let me begin with my biggest complaint regarding this book: No map of the Adirondack Park. Although this book purports to be the biography of Clarence Petty, it is a sketchy bio at best with the principal focus on the creation of this wilderness area in upper New York State. And yet, although this book constantly gives names of places and sections of the Park, not one map to help the reader better understand the forces at work here. I subtract two rating stars right off the top for this oversight. There is a map, a sketch actually, of a few square miles of the area in which Clarence grew up and currently lives. This brings me to my second complaint. Throughout the book, author Christopher Angus states that Clarence lived/lives in Coreys. But, if you look at the sketch in the book and then go to other resources, you find out that that is not true. Clarence's home is on Coreys Road. The hamlet of Coreys is another place entirely, approximately 20 miles to the north, and Coreys Road goes nowhere near Coreys. The book is pretty much a straightforward, simple and unstylistic narrative with appropriate quotes from individuals and other printed sources. One big bonus: Terrific photographs of the people involved in their natural setting. Yet, when I was done with the book, I had the sensation that I knew more than was necessary about the politics of the park, and precious little about Mr. Petty. Of course, his life revolved to such a great extent around the Adirondacks, that both had to be included. But, there is so much more to Clarence. For instance, no other place on earth inspired him to the extent these mountains did, except Alaska. We are told that he made more than half a dozen trips there, but only one is given any exposure, and then only cursorily. I would have liked to learn more about the other trips and what he found there that so moved him. We are told that he was an active letter writer promoting his thoughts on the environment. We get pieces of a letter or two, but not enough to give us an impression of the man. Several well-chosen letters in their entirety would have helped here. We are told he was often on the opposite side of environmental arguments with his older brother Bill, but there's very little evidence given to support that. More comments by both brothers on these debates would have been interesting and thought provoking. Further, except for environmental topics, we get precious little of the philosophy of this Adirondack original who is still driving at 99, who stopped giving pilot instructions at 94, who, for most of the year, lives by himself in the middle of this wilderness. I would have thought the author would have at least asked this man, who is only months away from becoming a centenarian, to what does he attribute his long, vigorous life? Good genes; an exceptionally active body and mind; a special diet; not smoking; not drinking? Or on that one occasion when he chose to imbibe, what thoughts and sensations flooded his mind? What lessons has he learned from life that he wants to impart to those coming after him? Clarence Petty is a remarkable human being, a pioneering environmentalist, activist, and aviator. You'll get the flavor of this man from this book, but not his essence. We need the "Bam!"

5 out of 5 stars A good old yarn, except true!.......2003-10-24

I have to say that I'm impressed with Clarence Petty's life. It almost makes me wish I was born in the Adirondacks around the turn of the century. Most people don't have lives much less the great life he has. It's a good story and the best part is that it's all true.

Any biography that states in its title "extraordinary...journey" has a great deal to live up to. This is especially true if the person is only regionally known. However, the life of Clarence Petty is nothing short of amazing and his life story confirms him as a living legend.

Author Christopher Angus ("Reflections From Canoe Country: Paddling the Water of the Adirondacks and Canada") has taken on the voluminous task of writing the life story of a man who was bred, worked and still lives in the Adirondack Park. Clarence Petty was born to a poor backwoods wilderness guide and lived his life in countless professions all in the name of the environment.

This is not a mundane tale of a "Dudley Doright". The reader soon discovers that Mr. Petty grew from being a well respected wilderness guide into a Federal and State conservationist, all the while honing his skills as a first class aviationist. Between these two professions Mr. Petty traveled the world. From dangerous missions over the Pacific in World War II to environmental works over Alaska and the Adirondack mountains, Clarence Petty moved forward to serve and protect the environment in which he lives. Also worth noting are the staggering number of conservancy organizations to which Mr. Petty belongs and contributes. There are few Presidents, Governors or other noteworthy politicians that Clarence Petty has not met in the last several decades. It is interesting to note that his viewpoint of politicians is adamantly level headed but not without strong opinion.

If the reader is not familiar with some of the colorful Adirondack legends of the past century, there are some pleasant surprises. His family personally knew all of them and the truth behind most. These tales are woven through the upbringing of Clarence Petty and serve as a time table to his growth. Exciting stories from mountain and river mappings to political controversies over the Adirondack Park fill the saga of Clarence Petty. The reader can not help but wonder what keeps a man like this going so stealthily for so long. His story is impressive.

People like Clarence Petty seem to be put on this earth at a time they are needed most. His influence and hard work to save the qualities of the Adirondack wilderness through the most crucial era of its' existence is inspiring. Mr. Petty's story is told in an unsentimental, yet moving manner.

The foreword is written by Dr. Anne LaBastille, a close friend of Clarence Petty and author of the "Woodswoman" series, as well as environmental gems like, "Mama Poc" and "Jaguar Totem". Her latest book, "Woodswoman IIII" has just been released.
