Now that Martin Scorsese is releasing his long-planned biopic THE AVIATOR, the life oh Howard Hughes starring Leo di Caprio from TITANIC as Hughes, expect a new flood of interest in the mysterious relict and his weird ways, especially towards the end of his life. Expect parallel interest in CALL ME PAT, a title from about ten years ago newly re-issued to meet the boom in Hughes studies. Hyland was a Navy radioman and a brave sailor indeed, whose exploits in the service deserve even more expansion than they merit here. Funny how the patriotic among us get short shrift while the merely wealthy, like Hughes, garner all the attention. By the end of the 1950s, Hyland (charmingly called "Pat") had taken over the operations of Hughes Aircraft while his boss, HH, was battling it out on every front with his movie star wife, Jean Peters.

Until 1980 this remained Hyland's job, not only his vocation, but his avocation. Between him and Hughes a mysterious bond remained. Hughes had stepped away from the glamorous, Hepburn and Gardner and RKO life by the time Hyland became CEO oh Hughes Aircraft, and so this wonderful book will be a kind of sequel to the Scorsese effort, which insyead concentrates on the less dismal, exciting and earlier Hollywood years and features a cameo by Gwen Stefani of No Doubt as Jean Harlow, the tragic platinum blonde whom Hughes directed in HELLS ANGELS and sought to dominate elsewhere.

    Book Description

Howard Hughes and Me is a "revealing" new book on Howard Robert Hughes. It contains a collection of the most complete, in-depth, and extensive first-hand personal information available about him. It is biographical in nature, much of which comes from a confidential employee, Chuck Waldron, who shares in a very respectful and forthright manner some of the very human characteristics that Howard Hughes possessed.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Amateurish at best!.......2003-11-24

I have given this book two stars solely because it seems as though any Amazon review in which one gives an item one star never gets posted!

This book is annoyingly amateurish. Typographical errors, misspellings, subject/verb disagreement, incorrect use of words, and the like abound in this book. Additionally, the type in the book (e.g., words underlined, bolded, capitalized, etc.) only adds to the aggravation. To top it all off, one gets the feeling that what is related in this book is second or third hand (at best!) information. Disappointingly impersonal!

I say one is better off seeking other books on Hughes (e.g., Citizen Hughes, I Caught Flies for Howard Hughes, His Weird and Wanton Ways, The Hidden Years, etc.) In any event, this book is solely a footnote to the aforementioned books on Hughes and is not for one looking for an introduction to Hughes or for details about him.

    Book Description

At the last round of the 2002 World Superbike Championship, American rider Colin Edwards overhauled season-long title favorite Troy Bayliss in two of the most exciting motorcycle races ever held. This authorized biography of the straight-talking, no-nonsense Texan chronicles the highs and lows of a colorful career played out during the glory years of World Superbike. Here is a unique insight into the sometimes controversial world of the double superbike champion, who for 2003 embarks on his toughest challenge yet in joining the MotoGP class with Aprilia.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Texas Tornado.......2004-01-11

There is a long tradition of Americans winning international motorcycle racing championships: Kenny Roberts (Jr. & Sr.), Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, Fred Merkel, Doug Polen, Scott Russell, John Kocinski. The latest to do so is Colin Edwards, "The Texas Tornado." This biography of the two-time World Superbike champion takes you from his birth in 1974, through his first motorcycle as a child, to his Superbike Championships for Honda, and ends with his signing with Aprilia for the 2003 MotoGP season. The discussion of his Aprilia signing is most important as it sets straight the story of how he left Honda and almost went to Ducatti. Also, included in the book are great color action photos of Colin throughout his career, many from the Edwards family archives.

Writer Bertie Simmonds had the complete cooperation of Colin and his family when writing this book, so you find out just what went through the rider's mind at various points in his career. This shows itself best in the chapters about his championship titles (controversy followed World Superbikes throughout 2000, while 2002 came down to the final lap of the final race) and the machinations that went on after the 2002 season to secure a MotoGP ride for 2003. You get to see some of the "real" Colin Edwards who, while crisscrossing the globe with a single-minded determination to win motorcycle championships, is just a down-home East Texas guy who married his high school sweetheart and still lives in his hometown of Conroe. Also, he is a man so well respected by his peers that Troy Bayliss, the 2001 World Superbike champion and the man that fought handlebar-to-handlebar with Colin in 2002, wrote the book's introduction.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that should be read by not only Colin's fans but by motorcycle racing fans in general. After all, you're going to want to know all you can about the man who, now that he is back with Honda in 2004, will be making life tough on Rossi, Biaggi, and the rest of the MotoGP circus.

      Book Description

Early Soviet Cinema: Innovation, Ideology and Propaganda examines the aesthetics of Soviet cinema during its "golden age" of the 1920s, against a background of cultural ferment and the construction of a new socialist society. Separate chapters are devoted to the work of Sergei Eisenstein, Lev Kuleshov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Dziga Vertov and Alexander Dovzhenko. Other major directors are also discussed at length. David Gillespie places primary focus on the text, with analysis concentrating on the artistic qualities, rather than the political implications, of each film. The result is not only a discussion of each director's contribution to the "golden age" and to world cinema but also an exploration of their own distinctive poetics.

4 out of 5 stars out of date, but still valuable.......2003-08-26

i'm a big fan of "how-to" books that are on-point and concise.

i bought this book in the late 1990's and it was extremely helpful in providing the nuts and bolts of releasing an independent record and/or starting an independent record label. gary himself says "don't buy it" (see his review)- lots of info is outdated. but it's still worth a flip through for anyone looking to release their first record.. the details on replication and promotion are still useful, as is the section on how to start a label.

you can supplement the outdated info with the internet and cover your basics with this book.

1 out of 5 stars please don't buy this book.......2002-08-15

when i published this edition of "releasing" back in 1997, it was a must-have for indie bands releasing their own music. because so much has changed in the past five years, this book is now totally out-of-date and out-of-print. please do not buy a used copy of this book! the book is mostly contact info for various independent music-related companies, and all of this info is outdated. the web does a much better job at providing this sort of information, so start searching. good luck! -gary hustwit

        5 out of 5 stars Hustwit's fin de siecle.......2000-01-24

Having read Gary Hustwit's How To Release... and then having read the reviews previously posted, I have to wonder if the other reviewer's had even read the same book! The writing in Hustwit's guide is cool, crisp, detached, eloquent, engaging, and informative! What more could you ask for in a book about releasing an indie record. Hustwit has more street cred in this field than all of the reviewers combined. Have they ever looked at the entire Hustwit ouevre? Perhaps the problem with the poor reviewers below wasn't with the quality of the book that they read but the quality of the record that they attempted to release. The only possible better source for Independent music guides would be Hustwit's equally poignant "Websites for Musicians" - together they embody a kind of "rememberance of things past of record release guides". I understand the German translation loses some of the earth tone quality of the prose. Unlike other guides for music Hustwit does not allow his book to, as Jean Baudrillard says, "Fall into the abyss of culture."

I picked this book up when I purchased RA2, and 3 hours after buying it, I returned it. This book is useless for anyone that can play and be successful at a video game. And for those of you who can't, it's called a trainer and it lets you make the game much easier and go by quicker. This is a book is a bomb.

        5 out of 5 stars Useful.......2001-10-30

This book was useful to me and, possibly, you in many many ways. First off, walkthroughs for all solo missions and stragy for multiplayer. Second, unit and building reviews. Third, FAQ's and many other secret and helpful pieces of info. Get this book.... It's worth it.

Hey guys, howz everyone doing? Well I brought this book a week or so ago becuase I'm in love with the game, and it really is a good book. Although I've done all the missions several times without the help of the book, it certainly gave me some good tips. If your a RA2 nut like me you won't need the stratigies but they're still fun to read! Colour photos would of been nice but u can't have everythiung I suppose! Cpaw ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book, like all of Prima's game guides.......2001-04-01

I think I am the only adult who has written a review for this book in the Amazon.com website. I don't think kids would need to read this book because they seem to find out everything about the game just by playing it for hours on end! Well, I enjoy real time strategy games too, but can't afford to spend the same amount of time as my younger colleagues on them. This is where Prima's guide comes in. It provides a quick overview of all the elements of the game, walkthroughs for all the missions, and some general strategy tips, exactly what is needed in a 3rd party manual. It is well-indexed too so I can find what I need quickly. The manual is fairly small, but this is because the game is not so deep as some others, like Age of Kings for example.

If you like real time strategy gaming on the computer this is for you. Originally there were 2 formats to playing rts games one developed by westood who created the command and conquer series most notably and the other by blizzard who made seires such as warcraft. Although both are nearly identical nearly every rts game uses the system that warcraft uses and many people complain they find using the left mouse button instead of the right to issue commands annoying but I can see past that. Your best bet is to play skirmish mishions or against a frined over the network. I dont find this game as good as the first red alert which if you include its expansions is the best game in the command and conquer series. If you have a computer with a processor less than 1ghz this is definatly a game you should consider buying for it.

If you buy this book thinking that it's an edition that contains more detailed information than that of the teacher's version...it's not.

Basically, it's the same exact version of the book as that of the student's edition. It just came straight from the publisher and the instructor didn't have to pay for it. So basically it's more like an evaluation copy.

Besides that it's a textbook...how else do you give a review on it?

                Book Description

Earl "The Goat" Manigault had what it takes to become a superstar: incredible leaping ability, great timing, and unstoppable moves. He set a New York City junior high school record by scoring 52 points in one game. In high school and on the playgrounds of Harlem, he astonished opponents with his acrobatic shots, including the patented double dunk.

Although seventy-two colleges offered him scholarships, lack of discipline and bad breaks sent Manigault stumbling into a world of heroin addiction and petty crimes for three years. He succumbed to the fast lane life that sapped the lives of so many of his friends in the 1960s.

The Goat kicked the habit, however, and then returned to Harlem to start his own summer basketball league for black youth.

This inspiring story of how one man rebuilt his life is told with vivid, no-holds-barred descriptions of the harshness, humor and love in today's inner city.

5 out of 5 stars Guerrilla warfare in the US?.......2000-12-11

_Gray Ghosts_ is an excellent foray into a chapter of the Civil War that does not always garner attention -- the establishment of a police state in Missouri and the subsequent backlash and ensuing war of sabotage by local guerrillas. Complexifying the historical landscape, Missouri and Kansas had shared much animosity in the years leading up to the Civil War, and Kanasas, who was a steadfast Union state, used the War as an opportunity to raid Missouri towns as Union Army representatives. Missouri to this point had been a borderline state. Many of the bands of Guerrillas, while they received aid from the Confederacy, never considered themselves a part of any Civil War cause. As Bill Anderson wrote, "I am a guerrilla. I have never belonged to the Confederate Army, nor do my men . . . I have chosen guerrilla warfare to revenge myself for wrongs that I could not honorably avenge otherwise" (201). These "wrongs" included the murder of his father and mother and the imprisonment of Anderson's sisters. The book is excellently written with thorough footnotes and documentation. Most of Brownlee's sources are either primary from newspapers and accounts of the time or secondary dating from the early 1900's. Brownlee also shows himself to be an excellent writer, stringing together the accounts into a vivid portrait of the time. His conversations with such characters as Jessie and Frank James, Bloody Bill Anderson, and William Quantrill represent Lazaras-esque scholastic resurrections. I found the author to be very opinionated, although his judgements are generally limited to the realm of speculative ethics and do not seem to fall along Blue/Gray or political demarcations. As he remarks in the preface, "In dealing with the characters involved, the author has not hesitated to credit each with personal responsibility" and seeks to give them the "praise or condemnation they deserve." From such a perspective, Brownlee comments on both the contextual factors shaping the guerrillas and the decisions they made that in turn shaped history.

4 out of 5 stars Factual first hand information.......1999-08-22

Brownlee does a good job of not letting his personal feelings get in the way. Unlike many authors who don't let truth enter into the fold. Brownlee uses numerous firsthand accounts of people who lived at the time and not his own opinions or that of a college professor from Kansas. Good historical book. Not to biased.

                      Book Description

Originally published separately, Weber's "Science as a Vocation" and "Politics as a Vocation" stand as the classic formulations of his positions on two related subjects that go to the heart of his thought: the nature and status of science and its claims to authority; and the nature and status of political claims and the ultimate justification for such claims. Together in this volume, these newly translated lectures offer an ideal point of entry into Weber's central project: understanding how, as Weber put it, "in the West alone there have appeared cultural manifestations [that seem to] go in the direction of universal significance and validity."

                        Book Description

Writing in a new tradition of environmental history, Robert Kelley Schneiders takes a long historical view to reconstruct the Missouri Valley environment before Euro-American settlement and then trace the environmental transformations resulting from the development projects of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He tells how the mighty Missouri has been transformed from a shallow, meandering stream to an engineered waterway with over a dozen dams, thousands of stone pile dikes, and seemingly endless miles of rock bank line--and how the river has reacted to the disruption of its original hydrologic and ecological processes.

                          Book Description

Over the course of two centuries, Americans have tried to tame the Missouri River. First explored by Lewis and Clark, this once free-flowing river has in modern times been dammed, dredged, and channelized until it now barely resembles its former self. Yet the Missouri remains beyond complete human control.

Schneiders explores the reciprocal relationship between people and the natural world as he examines the political origins of Missouri River development plans. Bringing together much of the previously fragmented history of the river, he describes the environmental changes caused by the construction of a barge channel below Sioux City and by dam and reservoir construction in Montana and the Dakotas. Contrary to the conclusions of several other water historians, Schneiders argues that the development of the river was guided by neither federal elites nor local interest groups acting alone but by the two working in cooperation; while the Corps of Engineers built dams and channelization structures, private citizens cleared the lower Missouri Valley for agriculture, industry, and housing.

Although Schneiders claims that Missouri River development was undertaken primarily to benefit agriculture, he holds that in the long run the river has foiled these management attempts--and that despite the investment of technology and money, the public may have been better off if the Missouri had been left alone. Rich in geographical and topographical information and featuring both historic and contemporary photos, Unruly River shows that despite humanity's herculean efforts, the Missouri continues to be the principal actor in its own life story.
