Can I play, Too? is an inspiring book. It deals with the disability of a young boy named Teddy. As a teacher of the Handicapped, I chose to read this book with my 5th grade students. This book had an impact on us all! My students have learned that it is okay to be different and that acceptance is important. We also had the opportunity to meet the author. K. Scott Conover has made an impact in the lives of several children with this sensitive book. I am looking forward to the publishing of his second book!
A great inspiriational book for 4th to 5th graders........1999-05-10
This book is an inspiring story of a child's comeback over a leg injury and contains many characters. It is interesting to read, and would be great for any 3rd to 6th grader. As an added side note, most of the proceeds go to the K. Scott Conover foundation, a foundation designed to help children overcome crippling diseases. Buy it and you won't be dissapointed.

Can i play too is about a boy who is really good at football buthe needs to get braces for his legs to walk right but the other kids make fun of him so he practices on his own and makes new freinds who dont make fun of him. then when he gets to high schoolm the braces are off and he is a star quaterback. This teaches children never to give up hope. I recemend this for ages 6 to 10

Madness and Cinema offers a radical approach to the issue of what happens when we watch films. By exploring cinema's relationship to meaning and proposing new ways to read cinema through psychoanalysis, this book develops the idea that the spectator engages in what has previously been described as an act of madness. By considering some of the key concepts from Freud and Lacan, as well as ideas from Derrida and Foucault, we are shown the common features that cinema and madness share. The film spectator is shown as the psychotic, neurotic and hysteric, as the book examines the ways in which the foundations of culture and meaning are challenged when we become the spectator of a film.

The opera premiered in July 1847 at Her Majesty's Theatre, London, with Jenny Lind as the prima donna. Verdi himself supervised the rehearsals for the premiere, and the original performing parts, which contain annotations made by the players under Verdi's direction and changes made by the composer during the rehearsals, have been preserved at the archives of the Royal Opera House.
The critical edition is the first publication of I masnadieri in full score. Based on the composer's autograph and on important secondary sources such as the performing parts mentioned above, this edition provides scholars and performers alike with unequaled means for interpretation and study of one of Verdi's less well known works. The detailed critical commentary discusses problems and ambiguities in the sources, while a wide-ranging introduction to the score traces the opera's genesis, sources, and performance history and practices.

easy reading for this beginner.......2007-07-03
A great 'workbook' to build a solid foundation on for investing. The exercises at the end of each chapter as well as the suggested links and reference books are the reason why I feel confident entering the market today. This book is the course book for the Author's Audio CD, "Big Picture Investing." Either one or the other will do, having both is overkill-- as I did.
An Excellent Book. One of Best I've Read........2005-06-15
Navarro's book is just excellent. He is a very good writer and an educator and knows how people learn. When you read this book you will want to keep your highlighter handy. He uses a very logical flow of concepts and supports them with good information. Of the over 200 stock market and investment books I've read over the past few years, this one is one of the best and you will go away saying...that really makes sense. This book easily stands on its own, so if you haven't read his If it is Raining in Brazil, don't worry about it. Just give it a read and you won't be sorry.
A good book for investment novices.......2004-07-25
Though the title of this book leads one to take it as the sequel to the author's first book "If it's raining in Brazil, buy Starbucks", it is quite different from it coz "if" is more like an "if then if then" excercise/reminder for relatively veteran investors, whilst this book is more like a beginner's guide to the author's concept of "Macrowave Investing", essence of which can be described by its three golden rules and four stages:-
R1. Buy strong stocks in strong sectors in an upward-trending market
R2. Short weak stocks in weak sectors in a downward-trending market
R3. Stay out of the market and in cash when there is no definable trend.
S1. Diagnose and prognose on corporate earnings news, flow of macroeconomic data, conduct of fiscal and monetary policy of govt, and exogenous shocks like wars and rain in Brazil, the so called four dynamic factors.
S2. Determine broad market and individual sector trends wrt business cycle, stock market cycle and interest rate cycle.
S3. Screen individual stock thru fundamental and technical analysis.
S4. Uses risk/money/trade management tools
The author said that this book is for all. As a professional trader, I believe that it is much more suitable for amateur long term stock investors who favors fundamental analysis. The coverage on S1 and S2 are brilliant, but not for S3 and S4. Serious investors should read some books else to compliment the inadequacies on TA and risk/money management.
In short, a good book. The Q&A and resource reference in the end of each chapter is very helpful. A value buy!
Excellent book with some nice strategies.......2004-01-16
Very well written, clear, and concise book on the market, emphasizing using both fundamental value and technical chart analysis to play the market. Perhaps the most important point made in the book is the author pointing out that one must pick strong stocks in strong sectors in order to be really successful. This tip might be worth the price of the book by itself, since 3 out of 4 stocks will ultimately follow the broad market anyway. (You can get that sector strength information from the Investor's Business Daily paper or the paid version of the website, but you'll have to pay the premium subscription price to get it).
One other extremely interesting section is where the author shows that buying stocks during the cold months and selling them during the warm months of the year can produce almost twice the gains of holding them throughout the year. This strategy tested out as valid in the American market going back several decades and incredibly was valid in the British market going back to 1694. The basic point is that holding stocks from October to April resulted in an average return of about 12%, whereas holding them throughout the year resulted in a performance of almost half that, because stocks often declined during the warmer months. Again, that little tidbit of advice might be worth the price of the book by itself, and is reminiscent of the strategy of buying the index and going long when the stock market crosses its 200-day moving average on the upside, and shorting it when it crosses the 200-day moving average on the downside, which has produced an average return of 17%. I've looked at dozens of simple and complex strategies but I hadn't heard of this sort of seasonal strategy before and was very interested to find that out, and may give it a try myself. So overall, a fine book on the market that should be useful to the beginning as well as more experienced investor and trader.
great top-down investing book!.......2003-12-30
In this book, the author takes a top-down approach to investing. He combined macro economic factors with fundamental/technical approach to the market. In many ways, this book reminds me of Martin Zweig's Winning on Wall Street, which in my eyes is one of the greatest investing books ever published. This book gave me a great number of possible ideas I can use to develop potential models from, and for that it is well worth the purchase price, even if none of them pan out.

I love Jennifer Lauck's life memoirs. The story of neglect she suffered was tragic, realistic and yet not sensationalized. She didn't need to embellish her story to make it stong and memorable. This collection of observations is more current than past memoirs but no less strong and moving.

"Operational Art," from its Soviet roots and until today........1999-01-01
This book is an academic but readable work which analyses of the development of what is known as "operational art," or in other words, the intermediate field of theory, which connects strategy with tactics. This is a relatively new and unfamiliar cognitive field in the Western world, and has only been begun to be understood since the late 1970's. Naveh combines complex theory within a historical context, beginning with the doctrines of von Clausewitz, continuing through the debacles of World War One and to the first Revolution in Military Affairs which took place in the Soviet Red Army of the 1920's. The latter half of the book concludes with the development of operational thought in the US Army which began in 1976. This followed the realization in the US military that their tactical doctrines provided no answer to the threats east of the iron curtain. This process of thought culminated with the Gulf War, which saw the successful implementation of the theory, independently developed to that of the Red Army, but remarkably similair. This book is unique, not in that it analyses operational theory, but in that it outlines the pioneering processes that took place in the Soviet Union during the 1920's and 30's. This information has remained hidden and unknown to the West until only very recently, and has been revealed here by the author who has researched the field intensively.

According to William LeoGrande, American involvement in Central America in the 1970s and '80s can be understood only in the context of the Cold War, and its greater struggle against the Soviet Union. Central America--and by this William LeoGrande means mainly El Salvador and Nicaragua--was simply one of several stages upon which these political war games were played. This was especially true during the Reagan years, during which U.S. policy "shifted from Carter's attempts to seek a negotiated settlement in El Salvador, and coexistence with the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, to Reagan's effort to achieve military victory for the Salvadoran government, and the ouster of the Sandinistas by covert proxy war."

Excellent book. LeoGrande tells us a disturbing tale that would be fodder for nightmares. And it's all too true.
That these people were once in charge of our government, and today are not sitting in jail is appalling.
An exhaustive account of US policy in Central America........1999-06-08
Leogrande documents the strong role the United States played in El Salvador and Nicaragua during the civil wars in these countries. He apologizes for excluding Guatemala because that would make his necessarily long work even longer. The actions of all players - the CIA, State Department, National Security Council, the Sandinistas, the Contras, the FLMN (Salvadoran rebels), the Organization of American States (OAS), and many others - are presented in a detailed narrative which illuminates the extraordinarily intricate background behind the headlines. As such it shows the tremendous power, resources and determination the United States has for controlling events south of its border. Though lengthy, I found this book extremely absorbing for I experienced history coming alive on its pages. Leogrande has produced a valuable work which will no doubt appear on any major bibliography on US policy in Central America.

Mr. LeoGrande has written a 590 page book with an additional 182 pages of notes and index. Only a university with a great basketball program such as UNC (the publisher) could afford to humor such a person. On the book cover, it states Mr. LeoGrande is an employee of "American University" yet doesn't bother to inform me about this school. Is it well-known like Harvard or MIT? At any rate he knows how to go on and on about his chosen subject.
Great analysis of the U.S.-El Salvador relations durings 80s.......1999-01-20
LeoGrande's academic analysis of the U.S. military involvement in Central America is the best account yet of the U.S. foreign policy towards Central America during the Eighties. Although, his focus is on El Salvador and Nicaragua, it is the painstaking assessment of the relations of the U.S. and El Salvador during the 1980s that makes this book valuable to its readers. Regarding El Salvador, the theme of the U.S. foreign policy was simple: support the Salvadoran military to stop the marxist-led FLMN guerrillas even if the military's death squads engage in massive human rights violations. The book should be useful not only to those interested in Central America, but also to those who live with, work with and do business with Central Americans in the United States. The Civil War in El Salvador displaced over 1 million persons, most of whom fled to the United States. During the Salvadoran Civil War, about 60,000 people died. The children and grandchildren of Salvadorans who were able to make it to the U.S. should find LeoGrande's book as an excellent introduction to the reasons why their forebears came to the United States. LeoGrande's book is informative, engaging and insightful.
