Come by sunday.......2006-05-23
I found this book easy to read, although, it contained many inaccuracies regarding dates, etc.
However, it was entertaining, and gave an insight into the life of post war Britain's, pre eminent blonde bombshell.
The life of Diana Dors was far more dramatic than any role she ever played, however, despite, abortions, beatings, disastrous love affairs and financial ruin, she did not inspire sympathy in the same way as a Monroe, or Garland. Indeed, Diana was far tougher then both screen legends, and had the ability not to take herself too seriously, possessing an enviable sense of humour, especially in the face of adversity.
Diana Dors, was born into a middle class family in Swindon, England, enduring a difficult relationship with her father, whose practical views of life she came to detest. She enjoyed a more positive relationship with her mother, who, encouraged her film star aspirations, and Diana eventually was awarded a place at LAMDA, eventually being awarded a contract with the Rank Organisation, where she appeared in "Oliver Twist" in the early forties, showing great dramatic promise.
Unfortunately, for Diana, meeting first husband Dennis Hamilton, would ensure her life would never be the same again. Hamilton was a notorious womaniser, and became Diana's "svengali" involving her in endless publicity stunts, designed to keep her in the public eye. To a degree this strategy was successful and in due course, Hollywood beckoned.
Diana's brief tenure in Hollywood, was hastened by Hamilton turning down an offer for her, to star in "The Girl Can't Help it", which, would eventually, propel arch rival, Jayne Mansfield to stardom. Instead, Diana appeared in two "potboilers" which are best forgotten.
Matters were not helped, by the infamous "pool" incident, where in front of selected Hollywood royalty, attending a party at their home, both, Diana and Hamilton, ended up in their own pool along with a photographer, who, it was alleged, had pushed them both, hoping to get publicity.
The stunt backfired, and seriously damaged Diana's reputation in Hollywood.
Ironically, Diana's time in Hollywood, signalled a decline in her career and fortunes and she soon returned to England, somewhat subdued.
During the next few years, Diana toiled in "B" movies, both in England and Europe. Hamilton died prematurely, and Diana embarked on a series of futile affairs, with a string of men.
Her career seemingly over, Diana appeared in Cabaret in Las Vegas, Europe and England and also managed to secure roles in many TV series both in the U.S and England.
As the swinging sixties began, Diana's glamourous image seemed old fashioned, compared to more trendy, upcoming stars like Julie Christie, and her career declined further, and film offers were rare.
Her second marriage to Richard Dawson, proved to be unsuccessful. The high spot, being the birth of her two sons, and Diana found solace, in romantic liaisons with various lovers.
Such was Diana's notoriety that she was labeled a 'Shameless Hussy" by the then Archbishop of Canterbury.
Diana had to face facts, she was a relic of the fifties and not getting any younger.
During this time, she was reduced to appearing in working mens clubs in the north of England, realising, her Las Vegas days were far behind her.
It was time to take stock.
After divorcing Dawson, she began a relationship, with English actor, Alan Lake, who she eventually married.
During this period, Diana became an accomplished character actress, appearing at the celebrated Royal Court Theatre in London and at the Chichester festival, where, she appeared in the classic Oedipus Rex.
This was the beginning of a brief period of critical acclaim, she was even lauded for her performances by Sir Laurence Olivier - high praise indeed.
Her success, unfortunately, was shortlived and life proceeded in a grim fashion.
Husband Lake, was an alcoholic and Diana's own health was fragile, she suffered menningitis, and almost died.
Diana's weight became a problem at this time, and her once sylph like figure became buried beneath more generous curves. However, she professed to be happy with her, lot during this period of her life. She even found religion, converting to Catholicism in the 1970's
Diana, sadly died of ovarian cancer in 1984, and her husband Alan Lake commited suicide soon after.
They are survived by Jason Lake their only child.
Diana Dors, best summed up her attitude to her life, in her autobiography "Dors by Diana" proclaiming, she had, "enjoyed the whole absurd mess to the highest possible degree"
Who are we to argue?
Dull bio of Dors.......2000-04-18
I was rather disappointed with this biography of Diana Dors,"Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe"(Actually, she more closely resembled Jayne Mansfield)this is a British book,so be prepared for spellings like"Kerb","Tyre",etc.Although she was truly beautiful, this book failed to hold my interest.I give it 2 stars because it does include some nice pictures of Diana,so it wasn't a total waste.

Book Description
Since the first baseball movie (Little Sunset) was released in 1915, Hollywood has had an on-again, off-again affair with the sport. The resulting relationship has produced a wide array of films, some good (Field of Dreams, Pride of the Yankees), some obscure (Roogie's Bump, Hot Curves) and some flops (The Slugger's Wife, The Babe Ruth Story). This is a detailed look at the 111 "fictional" baseball films produced and released in the United States from 1915 through 2001. This expanded and updated version of the 1992 first edition includes 28 new films produced between 1991 and 2001. New material includes an entry on 1978's Goodbye Franklin High (unavailable for the 1992 edition) and revisions to several entries after the uncut versions of several silent and pre-1950 talkie baseball films were made available, among them Hit and Run (1924), The Battling Orioles (1924), Slide Kelly Slide (1927) and They Learned About Women (1930). Each entry contains full cast and production credits, year of release, production company, a synopsis, and a critique of the movie. Behind-the-scenes and background information is included. Two additional (and completely updated) sections cover baseball short subjects and baseball in non-baseball films. An extensive bibliography completes the work.

too little.......2002-06-11
The Comendium contains introducing desciptions of Hunter's antagonists. It's not bad but definitely too little for an own book, even a compendium. It should rather be a chapter in a bigger publication. If you have knowledge about Vampire, Werewolf or Mage you don't need it.
A Needed Addition.......2000-02-28
The Storytellers Companion is the book that bridges H:tR back into the WoD game. Many have complained that H:tR is too different, or two far removed from the other WoD games and therefore it should be treated as an independant game. Well, this book gets back to the WoD. Not only does it give the storyteller an idea what is going on in the real word, but it also presents a large section on each "monster" type such that a storyteller can bring all the flavor of Vampire, or Werewolf into a Hunters game. Skeptic just have to remeber one thing. This game was written from the point of view that these humans no know thing about the Kindred, the Wolves or the Ghosts. Therefore, on the surface it will look like a "different" game. But all it takes is a creative storyteller to make everything link together.

If you need help crunching numbers using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Excel 2000 Bible can take novices or spreadsheet converts to an intermediate level and set regular users well on the road to mastery. So well-organized it could almost be a tutorial, the Bible starts with the basics of spreadsheet creation and navigation and moves on to cover weightier topics like sharing work, publishing data on the Web, and analysis using pivot tables.
You won't have any trouble finding everything you need, and when you do, the text and illustrations will show you the steps necessary to set your data to work. Unfortunately, it doesn't go into quite enough detail on the more advanced topics like Visual Basic programming, but for all but the mightiest data-jockeys it has plenty.
The accompanying CD-ROM has lots to keep you busy too: the complete text of the book, over 30 Excel utilities, custom worksheet functions, and even (why not?) a bunch of games. The 32-page Quick Start book will have you mucking about in spreadsheets in short order. As an overall package, the Microsoft Excel 2000 Bible is hard to beat. --Rob Lightner

Is it really worth it?.......2006-11-04
Sure it was a good idea. It's a nice glossy book with a companion cd. I meant to get to it...I mean it's sitting just to the left of my laptop. I'll get to it one day, but for now I just look at the book once in a while.
Outstanding Resourse.......2005-07-02
This is a comprehensive reference book that gives you all the information you need to master Excel. It is detailed and easy to follow.
Too many pages, not too much content..........2003-10-22
If you are an absolute beginner 80% of this book is for you. If you bought it to explore the capabilities and more complex tools of Excel, you are at a loss. I've been using Excel for 10 years. Mostly for corporate needs in an office environment and as a calculation tool for some of my MBA classes. Bought this one to get more insight, but did not find it useful. Most of the pages are spent to describe the simplest of tasks, such as formatting, listing of built-in formulas etc...
Won't recommend to intermediate and up users...
Good day!
Great Coverage!.......2001-10-31
I agree with the previous reviewer that the book is logically organized poorly for referencing certain operations. I think this is a very small drawback for the amount of information that this one source provides.
I've had to read it cover to cover and I find it to be very easy to understand and covers all of the basic and intermediate operations that I would use. It also covers strategies for building your own applications with Excel (both 97 and 2000). It will not gather much dust on my bookshelf.
Read the back cover.......2001-07-29
I believe this book is a great book. However, people who buys it are not aware that the book is for intermediate level. It is assumed by the author that they should have a basic knowledge of how to use excel. Please read the title, and the back cover page to let you know for who it is written. This book was not written for beginners, do not give a bad review about it if you do not know how to use excel at all. Buy a book that is for you. a beginner level book not a beginner to intermediate level.

Welcome to the office of the future! Microsoft Office 2000 has many new features, and sorting them out can be a challenge without a guidebook. Pick up the Microsoft Office 2000 Bible and get the word on Word, access to Access, and lots more. It's a comprehensive tome aimed at beginners and intermediate users, as well as more advanced folks who just want the dirt on the new stuff and plan to study in depth later.
From its pull-out "Quick Start" booklet through its advanced chapters on macros, collaboration, and document integration, you'll find plenty of information on how to make this application suite meet all of your needs. Lengthy sections on Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Outlook are complemented by easy organization, clear writing, good illustrations, and strong cohesion to form a good working reference.
Publisher and FrontPage, as well as advanced material like Visual Basic for Applications, don't get as much space, so if you're destined for Web work or programming, you might want to consider another general title, or at least one specific to the application you'll be using. But if you want a good introduction to the most used parts of Office 2000, this book and CD-ROM (containing templates, documents, searchable text, and utilities galore) will serve you well. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Find out just about everything you need to know to use Office 2000 -- the smart way. Whether you have to create a dynamite presentation complete with cash flow analysis, marketing reports, and funny jokes by tomorrow morning, or want to annotate the Web page your colleague just e-mailed you from Tokyo, Microsoft Office 2000 Bible is the one reference you can always rely on.
Customer Reviews:
Used is an excellent buy!.......2003-03-09
Although I have not read through the book completely, I have found that what I have read to be most informative and helpful to myself as well as the adults I teach Office 2000 to.
I have always found the "Bible" books to give you a bit more insight into the subject matter.
You will not regret this purchase!
Too expensive, but of possible use..........2000-05-11
I got this mainly for the information about Outlook and while the book is by no means useless, it is also disappointing. It's not consistent with Outlook 2000 Corporate or Workgroup (it can still help but the examples and screenshots are not entirely appropriate) and there are errors in the book, as well as downright bad English. Still, if you can get it cheap or for free, it might be worth something.

Book Description
When Tina S. meets April, a teenage runaway, she thinks she's found her best friend. She leaves behind her dysfunctional family to join April in the tunnels of Grand Central Station amidst the homeless and drug addicted. Soon she's bingeing on crack--just like April--and stealing, scamming and panhandling to support her habit and to survive on the streets. In her own words, she describes her descent into crack addiction, being raped in the tunnels, her several arrests and jail terms and her grief and guilt over the death of April, whom she'd come to love. Finally faced with the reality that she might not make it through one more day, Tina takes her first difficult steps towards a normal life. With the help of a homeless advocate and his wife, a gay uncle dying of AIDS, and the woman who was to become her co-author on this book, Tina turns her life around and makes her way back to the world of the living.
Customer Reviews:
They're so lonely..........2006-03-12
This book is fantastic. You can read other books on the physical stuff homeless teens go through (the drugs, the rapes, the crime, the dirty clothes, whatever) and that's all in here, too, but what really gets you is the emotional pain of everybody in the book (especially Tina, the narrator). She talks how she returned to her boyfriend who would beat her because when she came back to him, he'd be sort of happy to have her around and that was the closest she could get to love, and how she was absolutely overwhelmed when her uncle didn't kick her out after she trashed his car because now finally somebody wants her around, and many other things. It's really moving. Read the book; it's a fun read (Tina's voice gets witty and sarcastic at times, and her life on the street and in rehab is very interesting), and having your eyes opened to the way the people in the book are so desperate for love might make you more aware of the people in your life who desperately need love as well.
a real page-turner.......2003-12-15
This book was really fascinating and great. I couldn't put it down. I really liked hearing Tina's perspective on her life.
While the setting of this book has Tina being drug-addicted and homeless, that's not all this book is about. The other running them is Tina's deep devotion to her best friend April [...]. It's very touching and I'm glad it was written.
Fascinating Story.......2002-07-08
I could not put this book down either. I happened on it by chance also while looking for books on New York prior to my first trip there. The core story of addiction and the inevitability of worse things happening is not new but what makes this book fascinating is the location in which this addict goes down her trek. Grand Central Station of all places in the world has to be in the top 5 most horrible places to live out this drug induced lifestyle. Because of this location you will read about things you've never heard about before in an addicts story. Somethings I still can't even imagine. I give this story a 4 instead of 5 because I got confused on time periods. I didn't understand where in time I was sometimes because of the jumping around that the author does and that was somewhat frustrating. The story itself is extraordinary.
This is unbelievable!!.......2002-03-03
Growing up in an affluent area of Connecticut I dreamed of running away into NY City - where the lights were always on and there was always something to do and people to meet. I wouldn't have lasted one minute after reading this book and the way Tina S. survived day after day supporting one's habit amongst a miriade of homeless people. I give her great kudos for finally finding herself with the help of others and has successfully made a life of her own. I was at the edge of my seat with this book - hoping for the best..which at times was questionable that it would happen. Parents should read this book as well as their children.. It is an eyeopener!!!
Powerful and Gritty Memoir.......2001-04-19
What Tina S. first thought was a glamorous adventure -- living with another teenage runaway among the homeless in the tunnels under Grand Central Station -- turned out to be the beginning of a nightmarish four years that included crack addiction, rape, violence, and the death of her beloved friend, April. But this is also an inspiring story because it tells how Tina managed to turn her life around after April's death. The book shows the horrors of tunnel life, but it also celebrates Tina's struggle to survive. At the end, when she's finally rebuilt her life, you want to hug her and pat her on the back and tell her, 'Way to go, baby!' Tina's courage, strength and honesty are amazing, and she deserves many thanks for being brave enough to share her story. It's full of hope, and you can't put this book down at the end without thinking, wow, my problems are trivial in comparison. By sharing her story, Tina shared a little of her strength and courage, too.

Book Description
Having spent much of its quarter century of military service in the shadows of more glamorous aircraft, the tough, hard-working H-43 helicopter is brought to the forefront in this long overdue account. Recounting the personal experiences of aircrews, and with dramatic incidents and exclusive illustrations, Wayne Mutza brings to light the H-43's unique development and numerous accomplishments. The complete details of the helicopter's colorful past, which have long remained in obscurity, are presented for the first time in this fascinating volume. Coverage includes early U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Service, U.S. Air Force crash-rescue, combat in Southeast Asia, foreign use, commercial operators, and unusual variants and survivors. Whether pulling flyers from fiery crashes, rescuing airmen from enemy lairs in the jungles of Southeast Asia, aiding hurricane victims, or flying plane guard duty off carriers, the H-43 proved itself a most distinct and capable brand of helicopter., over 250 color and b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"

Great Book About a Great Helicopter.......1999-08-10
This book tells a story about a company that many have never heard of and a helicopter that even less have heard of. Kaman Corporation and its H-43 helicopters. They were unsung hero's of the Viet Nam war performing many more resuces per helicopter deployed than any other. If you like helicopters, history, or just want to read something interesting I highly suggest this book.
Great history of an overlooked helicopter.......1999-06-17
Yes, there were more helicopters in Vietnam than the Huey. This book tells the story of the kaman H-43 series...you know the "eggbeater" helicopter. The original '43 served the Navy and Marines in both training and observation roles, and when it was redesigned with turbine power it became the primary short-range Air Force rescue craft of the 60's. Read about the Huskie that was lost in Thialand while trying to save a B-52 crew and you'll appreciate not only the helicopter but the brave crews that served in them. I have several of the author's books, and I'd like to see more heicopter histories...
Book Description
"Where were you when Diana died? For Trevor Rees-Jones, the answer is simple: he was in the same hospital as Diana, fighting for his own life a few rooms away.As bodyguard to her companion Dodi Fayed, he was with the couple when, hounded by paparazzi, and with a driver who turned out to be drunk, their Mercedes crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the tunnel under the Place de l'Alma in Paris.Dodi and the Driver, Henri Paul, died instantaneously, medics say; Diana was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors worked feverishly to resuscitate her before giving up in the early hours of Sunday morning.Miraculously, Trevor survived. But his condition was critical--internal chest injuries and a broken wrist were the least of it.His head had taken the brunt of the impact and suffered catastrophic damage; his face was crushed beyond recognition. In a stunning medical drama, however, a facial surgeon performed a miracle of reconstruction, and--along with Trevor's own indomitable will and the support of his family and friends--the bodyguard was able to leave the hospital after just over a month. His goal then was straightforward: to return to a normal life as soon as possible, go back to work for his employer, Mohamed Al Fayed, and to the simple pleasures of rugby and his mates at home in Shropshire. But the crash that nearly killed him had killed Diana, Princess of Wales, one of the most famous women of the late twentieth century.A normal life was no longer an option. An as Mohamed Al Fayed's grief at the loss of his son quickly turned into a desperate hunt for reasons, for culprits and conspiracy, Trevor found his unswerving loyalty to the Boss at first questioned and then, ultimately, destroyed, as Fayed pointed the finger of blame at him.The Bodyguard's Story grippingly describes, for the first time, Trevor Rees-Jones's part in these astonishing events. From the prelude to Paris, when Trevor found himself minding the Princess and her two sons in the south of France, to the crash itself and its causes and consequences, this book reveals the true, first-hand account of one of the most sensational news stories of the last century.Compelling, alarming and yet deeply moving, it is a remarkable story of courage under fire, and of how ordinary people can react to extraordinary circumstances and survive, scarred, but with their souls and values intact."
Customer Reviews:
A book to end the conspiracy theories?.......2007-04-22
'The Bodyguard's Story' is ghost written and very readable. It has the intimacy if a biography, a pace befitting the events, and the readable style of novel. Recommended to anyone for a good read, 'The Bodyguard's Story' essential reading for those interested in the events of Diana's death.
As the sole survivor of the crash, the bodyguard's story should be the book to end the conspiracy theories. Its doesn't. First because of the inevitable pre-shock amnesia endured by all crash victims, especially a victim who injuries were so horrific as to bring him close to death. The Bodyguard's Story leaves gaps. Gaps left by the investigation, such as the existence of the Fiat Panda. However 'The Bodyguard's Story' does cover the exhaustive French investigation and accounts for the long period between crash and arrival at hospital for both Diana and 'her' bodyguard.
The book does reveal one fact that is not commonly perceived. The Body guard was not Diana's but for Dodi Al Fayed as employed by his father Mohamed Al Fayed. Diana had no body guard that day.
'The Bodyguard's Story' paints a picture of incompetent security and security officers as worried about instant dismissal by a dictatorial boss, Al Fayed, as they were for the security of their charges. The bodyguard's enduring loyalty to his 'Boss', Al Fayed, leaves a open the possibility, may even appear to suggest, that there were other reasons for the employee's amnesia. The book begs the question as to why Diana put herself at such risk, in the hands of a person known to be at odds with the British government and in a relationship which was bound to be of concern to all.
An intriguing and well written read.
A true account of what happened.......2004-08-08
There is only one person that knows what actually happened before, during and after the horrific accident that left most of the world in shock and disbelief and that is Trevor Rees-Jones.
This was a fascinating look "behind the scenes" of a royal and much beloved figure and a very foolish "commoner". The fault of this accident seems to rest with Dodi making a bunch of unwise decisions that ultimately led to 3 people losing their lives.
A fascinating read, albeit a bit slow in some chapters, but fascinating none the less!
From the source.......2004-01-14
I have always wondered what kind of a person Trevor Rees-Jones was and his book gave an in-depth view of him, personally and professionally . . . in his own words.
The saying goes that "truth is stranger than fiction." The truth is also less sensational and colorful than the portrait painted by tabloid hacks and unethical "journalists" the world over.
From the start, I didn't think Trevor was trying to cash in on his time with Diana, Princess of Wales. In the foreward, he stated that writing the book (author Moira Johnston helped him write it) was his way of dealing with the situation and moving on with his life.
Trevor is an ordinary guy who had a very high profile job. It was because of circumstances on the job (that lead to what Trevor called "an industrial accident") and the fact that he was in a car with the world's most famous woman that has put him center stage for the rest of his life.
I felt sorry for the entire Rees-Jones family as diary entry after another explained the turmoil going on inside each of them: His mother and stepfather's struggle to getting Trevor on the road to recovery, the whole family having to deal with the intense media pressure, having Trevor's professionalism called into question by so-called experts (that, in his own words, were not at the Ritz nor in the car), Trevor's having to cope with the fact that he was the only survivor, the family's having to deal with the first overprotective and subsequently vicious hand of Mohammed Al Fayed. The list goes on.
I did get mad at, but then later understood, Trevor's wanting to keep his job with Al Fayed. He was the textbook case example of a loyal employee. Unfortunately, Mohammed Al Fayed was (and still is) so hung up on his conspiracy theories that he thought Trevor was lying to him about how much he remembered of the accident. It was only when he (Al Fayed) was more forthright in wanting to take complete control of the investigation that Trevor had finally had enough and quit (his good friend, Kez, would also quit about two years after the crash for the same reason: He told Al Fayed to his face that he thought his theories were rubbish).
I give Trevor and his family (his real last name is just Rees but he changed HIS name to Rees-Jones because he was so in love with his now ex-wife Sue Jones) MUCH credit for coming through such a trying time in their lives not only intact but stronger than ever. They did not let any of the media attention go to their heads (even as Trevor's so-called friends and even Sue were selling themselves to the highest bidder in the media). They remained true small town folks to the end (and Trevor was even able to play his beloved rugby not a year after the crash).
Some folks may find this book boring as Trevor is a very down-to-earth chap who just shoots straight from the hip. He doesn't trump up the facts (or make things up entirely as the media decided to do time and again while Trevor refused to give interviews). He presents Diana in a very positive light and tells the unexciting truth about the goings on of the case and behind the scenes shananigans of one Mohammed Al Fayed.
Highly recommended (if you can still get it) for a first hand account of wha it's like on the other side of the camera and news reports.
An Indepth View of a Royal Tragedy.......2003-08-11
Although somewhat hard to follow ; this is a book definitely worth reading. An indepth look , from the only survivor of a car crash that changed history! What could be more exciting.Somewhat rough around the edges;but ,nevertheless honest and telling Never knowing how these fateful events would unfold as they left the Ritz with Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana , Trevor
and Kez only knew that they were between a rock and a hard place. You don't disrespect the Boss's son when he's entertaining a Princess .It wouldn't be the first time Dodi's last minute change of plans surprised the bodyguards .At the recent screening of "Air Force One" Dodi had seated Diana in Trevors' usual seat by the door.Trevor nearly landed in Diana's lap. That same evening on route to the theatre with the Princess,Trevor had shown professionalism in eluding the paparazzi - so why the change in plans at the Ritz? Dodi's former girlfriend ,Kelly Fisher testified that Dodi was a "real dictator to Trevor".It was apparent that Dodi began to mistrust those around him ; and he just may have tried to impress the Princess with Henri Paul ; someone he knew he could trust. Trevor should have been compensated handsomely for his injuries.Money and justice just don't seem to mix .
Basically a waste of time.........................2003-01-23
For those that were truly fans of Diana, this book does nothing. I am not, but still can respect a well written story which this book is definitely not. All it does do, is give some slight info to the curious of what took place a few months prior to her death. As far as any real insight into her life, personality, accident and all the miscellanoeus issues surrounding it, this book just touches the surface. Nothing gained or lost here except a little bit of time in the reading.
Book Description
Diana, Princess of Wales's bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones miraculously survived the fatal car crash in Paris that seemed to plunge the entire world into mourning. At last having made a recovery from his catastrophic injuries, Trevor Rees-Jones grippingly describes his part in these astonishing events, and what really happened before, during and after the crash. Compelling, alarming and deeply moving, it is a remarkable story of courage under fire and how ordinary people react to extraordinary circumstances.
