"No tier of that period was as creative in designing patterns or tied better quality, more lifelike streamers than Mrs. Stevens. This biography has been carefully researched and beautifully written."- Keith Fulsher, master fly tier, originator of the Thunder Creek series
Carrie Stevens (1882-1970) of Upper Dam, Maine, created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost, which she designed to catch the giant brook trout and landlocked salmon of the Rangeley Lakes. This long-awaited book is both a history of the woman and the region, as well as a guide to the Stevens method. It includes color plates of original patterns, some only recently discovered, along with a biography illustrated with archival photos. The tying section lists dressings for more than 100 streamers, 65 of which have never been published.
Graydon R. Hilyard has been studying Carrie Stevens and collecting her work for fifteen years. His son Leslie, a champion fly tier, tied patterns for the book and contributed to the research.
Customer Reviews:
Peculiar.......2000-12-15
This is an odd book. Playboy of the month for June, 1997, Carrie Stevens had distinctive flame-red hair and firm, natural breasts. However, in the three years since then, she appears to have gone downhill in the looks department, and moved to an alternative career as a fisherwoman. This is quite odd, as Playmates usually attempt a career in acting or, in the modern era, as 'goddesses of the web'. Carrie's decision to take such a drastic career move is surely evidence of a strong personality, one which separates her from the traditionally airheaded view of Playmates. Nice one, Carrie!
The Real History of Streamers.......2000-05-27
This is a superlative book on a par with The Art of the Salmon Fly by J.Bates. It has many beautiful photos of the streamers, well laid out and functionally depicted. The first half of the book tells in detail what was happening in the Rangely Lakes region and is a wonderful vingette of the real history of the lakes. The second half concentrates on the flies and tying. With photos of highest quality and fine desciptions, this is a book that will last. The tie-in to Joe Bates was, for me, a treat as he lived in my town and I visited him on several occassions. This was just the book I was lookng for on streamers. It has a look of substance, great directions, and clear recipies. If you are a serious fly fisherman, or want to be this book belongs on your shelf. There is a lot of junk out there on modern fly fishing, this book is a huge contrast. I am amazed by the amount of research that went into it;it is no wonder that it took fifteen years to compile. If you are like me, and want a book that shows high quality text and graphics and patterns that are legendary and useful , buy this book without hesitation. I read it the first day it came.Good job by this father and son team.
A Must For Any Fly Fisherman's Library.......2000-04-15
I was unable to put this book down until I had read the entire contents. It is a historical treasure, rich in information and photographs that will be greatly appreciated by any fly fisherman. The color photographic and printing quality is excellent. A significant portion of the book is filled with details on the Stevens streamer fly patterns and the specific information for a fly tyer to create them. A great combination of fly fishing history and a fly tying "cook book". I plan to buy a number of additional copies for gifts to fishing friends.

I loved this book. It's my favorite in my collection at home. I especially liked the pictures and the writing. Besides that, it also had good parts about britney and her life. I really feel closer to her after teading this. I wish that they included a section where she talked more about her music. I bought the britney spears doll at the mall near my house. She is definitely the best in the world.
Good Book.......2002-08-18
Britney kept a diary during the fliming ofher #2 hit movie, "Crossroads." The flimed grossed over 75 million dollars worldwide and this book has basically some behind the scenes info. Good buy for Britney fans.
QUIT IT!!!.......2002-08-12
What is the publishing world coming to? What happened to good books and authors, such as Flannery O' Connor, V.C. Andrews, and William Faulkner? Sure, they're all dead and all, but what happened to all the good writers? Is it all coming to an end? How could trash by this gal be considered literature? Britney writes like a little kid and just because she's a big "star" doesn't mean she deserves to be published more than the people who work their butts off writing real literature. Gawd, what a bookshelf hog. And book deal hog, at that. She's taking over everything; next thing you know, she's going to be running for prez. Hopefully that won't happen...

Book Description
Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) builds upon kaizen, TQM, TPM, and other strategies to use speed for competitive advantage. The difference between QRM and other time-based programs is QRM involves the entire organization--from the shop floor to the office, from purchasing to sales.
Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) is an expansion of time-based competition (TBC) strategies that use speed for a competitive advantage. Essentially, QRM stems from a single principle--to reduce lead times. But here's the key difference that successfully sets QRM apart from other time-based programs: Quick Response Manufacturing is an approach for the entire organization--from the shop floor to the office, from reorganizing production to new product introduction, from accounting to performance measures, from purchasing to sales. In order to compete on speed, you must change the management mind-set and reduce lead times throughout the organization.
And for those of you who have invested in lean manufacturing programs, QRM does not require that you scrap these programs. Instead, Quick Response Manufacturing builds upon the ideas of kaizen, TQM, TPM, and others, making it an expansion of your company's quest for competitive strategies. So discover the power of speed. Quick Response Manufacturing is a broad and powerful corporate strategy that holds tremendous benefits for your entire organization.
Here's what You Get:
15 specific steps to implement a successful QRM program.
Case studies of seven companies--including John Deer, Horicon Works, and Ingersoll--that successfully use QRM. Hundreds of tools and examples to show you why QRM succeeds. 120 tables and figures to illustrate QRM. Formulas to measure lead times. Two quick fixes to adjust your existing accounting systems to enable QRM efforts. Discussion on cells, teams, and the need for employee empowerment. Now you can discover what other top companies already know: Quick Response Manufacturing is a truly tested way of implementing and achieving a powerful competitive strategy based on speed.

Maybe one of the best books about Operations Management.......2006-10-02
A breakthrough new way of thinking!
Meanwhile JIT/Lean can not be implemented for highly variable product offer and variable demand larger than +/- 20% (when smoothing your p-schedule is not feasible anymore), the author describes a new path that can be followed (push-pull). The new 21st century's main objective is to compete - on speed. Reducing the lead times does not stop in manufacturing and the author gives a comprehensible overview how to proceed - including as well the softfactors making things work or fail.
Meanwhile JIT/Lean and the kanban-philosophy aims to reduce waste and the outcome is reduction in lead times and WIP (and improvment of quality), the QRM way targets the reduction of lead time. Many thinking from JIT/Lean can be used as well for QRM as cell manufacturing for flow, lotsize reduction/ setup (SMED) and preventive maintenance (machine availability) etc. Considering JIT/Lean systems are pull-systems, QRM-principles provide a robust framework as well for production systems where the variability of the product scope is broader and the customization is higher. Applying these tecniques will not only reduce your lead-times and increase your quality and service level, but as well simplify and improve your production system (sales and operations planning) and therefore finally improve your service level for deliveries. Reducing WIP goes hand-in-hand with the reduction of lead-times and a therefore a reduction of the binding capital (inventories/ WACC). Rajan Suri will even provide in his books the pitfalls of traditional management accounting and gives you strong arguments how to sell a company wide project to apply this new thinking.
This book is written for beginners as well as for experts in manufacturing and for further insights, the book Factory Physics (Hopp/Spearman) is strongly recomended. Reading and applying Japanese
tecniques as SMED, TPM and ZQC etc, were very useful to me to understand what tools do exist and can be used for QRM as well. Excellent software-packages for QRM are available, but I do strongly recommend to understand the fundamental and basic equations of QRM about manufacturing interactions, before applying this new tecniques (queuing theory etc.) - this will help you to analyse what improvements and where have to be targeted.
Meanwhile SCM-books do not provide the tools to improve operations in many companies, QRM provides you the required knowledge how to trim every single chain element in the supply chain and even provides a simple way to measure the performance of your suppliers (quality, cost and especially the delivery performance). This is the way to go for many companies, whether small or large scale - wherever JIT/Lean can not be applied or the company's culture might not be capable of adopting the Japanese way!
Best for Job-Shop Manufacturers .......2005-12-20
This book was great! I couldn't put it down. The author is able to pull together the best of Lean, Kanban, JIT etc... and apply them in a methodology that truly works for a diverse manufacturing plant. We make hundreds if not thousands of different products, some only once and some are repeats but always in small batches. It was really great to read a manufacturing book that will help a plant like ours. Some really great stuff in this book!
Focuses on today's manufacturing climate.......2004-10-29
As a former manager of strategic planning, now returned to the manufacturing side, I consider this book to be one of the most important I have read over the past several years. What I am seeing in manufacturing is that the cookie cutter products, high tech or not, are moving to either Asia or Mexico. The remaining products are being sold to customers who require a high level of customization on a very short lead time. The author has developed a system to accomplish this. He focuses not just on the nuts and bolts of the shop floor, but also on streamlining the support systems needed to achieve this level of service. If you are in high level manufacturing or corporate management, you need to read this book. If you are at a lower level, you will still be exposed to many ideas which you can incorporate into improving your service, to both internal and external customers, and reducing your lead times. I think it ranks right up there with The Goal as one of the most important business books written in the era of modern manufacturing.
Good manufacturing strategy book.......2003-05-03
QRM is a manufacturing strategy that focuses on speed throughout the manufacturing process. All efforts are focused on lead-time reduction. Unlike other lean manufacturing clones, QRM distinguishes itself with some unique approaches. While I'm not willing to accept everything the author is pushing, I certainly found some valuable insights.
The author does an excellent job of explaining the concepts, providing enough detail and examples to ensure the reader does not go away confused.
I thought this was a really good book and would recommend it to anyone involved in manufacturing, but even more so to anyone involved with engineer-to-order or make-to-order manufacturing.
Complete Book for Improving Manufacturing.......2002-06-30
It was hard to put this book down when I first read it. As a manufacturing manager, it almost seemed as if Prof. Suri had spent time in my plant. Most of the topics he addresses in QRM are relevant to the issues I was struggling with. He writes about reducing lead time in all aspects of operations, even product development. His concept of POLCA to create a pull system for low volume, high mix manufacturing is innovative.
I recommend this highly to anyone who is trying to understand a manufacturing operation and how to improve it. It is easy to read and understand with concepts that work.

Interesting.......2006-11-07
An interesting if not biased look at the life (and art?) of Roger Corman. Essential reading for low-budget filmmaking.
Very interesting read for pop culture, film and business buffs.......2006-06-24
I'm not sure of how I happened upon this biography, but I'm glad I did. I'm not particularly a Roger Corman fan, having seen perhaps three or four of his films without really noticing that Corman had a part in their making.
Corman's life is interesting. Not only was he probably the most successful independent filmaker in history, he was also mentor and first-chance for many of today's leading producers, directors, writers and stars.
Remarkably down to earth and honest, Corman admits that his life has not been totally fulfilling: like many successful people, success is never enough - there's always one more challenge down the road and more than one challenge left unexplored in the past.
Corman engages in some, but not deep, analysis of his films, explains his evolving political philosophy and provides snippets that from another author might be construed as name-dropping. But Corman was there and it's his interactions with these people he's talking about, so it's not in the least obnoxious.
Above all, the value of Corman's book may not be to film buffs, but to business people, especially small scale entrepreneurs. Corman's management methods and his approach to filmaking were true nose-to-the-grindstone. He knew his market; he studied his market; he created his product to appeal to his market and he kept costs down to a minimum in order to reduce his risk of loss.
Quite a guy and his biography is worth the couple of hours it takes to read it.
Jerry
You'll Understand Corman Better.......2005-06-26
To this day, I haven't seen one Corman film I've liked. Still, this book is a nice look into the world of low-budget producing. It gave me the opportunity to truly understand my disdain for Corman and AIP.
Most of the book focuses on three or four of the productions Corman is most proud of. I would have preferred him spending additional time on his more obscure films. Teenage Caveman only gets a paragraph or two written about it.
A documentary would have been a more appropriate format for this material than a book. It would have been much shorter that way at the very least. Then again, Corman always had a knack for dragging things out in his films. Ever seen Swamp Diamonds?
The main theme of the book seems to be, "Yeah, Corman's films were bad, but he did pretty good for what he had." That doesn't take away the fact that they're bad films. Don't watch them unless you have a high threshold of pain.

Good book from the king of Trash.......2003-11-12
First, this is really a 1990 book, and all information pertains to 1988 and prior. I enjoy exploitation films and this book adds to my enjoyment. Many films today are boring and darkly filmed. Just a bunch of special effects done on a computer. It's nice to know that many of Roger Corman films are still available. Maybe not at you local Wal Mart, but they do appear on TV occasionally. This book provides information to further my appreciation of what Roger Corman was able to accomplish during his life-time. Well through 1988, anyway.

Book Description
Media Spectacle and the Crisis of Democracy investigates the rapidly changing role of the media after the momentous political events since 9/11. Kellner shows how corporate media ownership, linked with a rightward shift of establishment media, have disadvantaged the Democrats and benefited the Republicans.
Kellner argues that 'media spectacles' have come to dominate news covereage and distract the public from the substance of real public issues. Exploring the role of media spectacle in the 9/11 attacks and subsequent Terror Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Kellner documents the centrality of media politics in advancing foreign policy agendas and militarism. He reveals how conflicting political forces ranging from Al Qaeda to the Bush administration construct media spectacles to advance their politics. Two chapters delineate the role of the media in the highly significant 2004 election campaign that many believe to be one of the key political struggles of the contemporary era. Criticizing unilateralism abroad, Kellner argues for a multilateral and cosmopolitan globalization and the need for democratic media to take a more decisive role to overcome the current crisis of democracy.

Book Description
* Includes lessons from Africa, Central America, North America and Asia, and detailed coverage of collaborative management in irrigated environments of Australia's Murray Darling Basin
* Essential reading for economists, policy-makers, researchers, leaders,
practitioners and students working in environmental and natural resource management
Mainstream economics has a tight grip on public discourse, yet remains
poorly equipped to comprehend the collaborative vision for managing
environmental and resource commons. This ground-breaking book diagnoses the weaknesses of mainstream economics in analysing collaborative and other decentralized approaches to environmental management, and presents a unique operational approach to how collaborative environmental governance might be brought to fruition in a variety of contexts, whether in industrialized or developing countries. The result is a powerful, useful and badly needed approach to economics for collaborative environmental management of the
commons.
