    Book Description

Not since the trial of Louis Riel in 1885 had Western Canada seen such a courtroom drama. Colin Thatcher, millionaire rancher, son of former Saskatchewan Premier Ross Thatcher, a Member of the Saskatchewan Legislature and a former cabinet minister in his own right, charged with the brutal slaying of his ex-wife JoAnn. A fifteen-month police investigation, capped by a wire-tapped recording of the accused politician in conversation with his accomplice. The battle before the jury entranced the entire nation as the outcome was uncertain to the very end. But the jury rejected Thatcher's credo "Deny, Deny, Deny" and convicted the victim's former husband who had regarded himself as above the law. The sentence? Life imprisonment without eligibility for parole for twenty-five years.

Colin Thatcher refused to accept the verdict of the jury. He appealed. And appealed. And appealed. First, to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. Then to the Supreme Court of Canada. Then to the Minister of Justice, claiming "new evidence" entitled him to a new trial. The Colin Thatcher case continued for fifteen years after the 1984 guilty verdict, and continues today. A jury trial is scheduled for Moose Jaw in October 2000 as the convicted murderer seeks a reduction in his twenty-five year period of parole ineligibility.

Deny, Deny, Deny tells the entire story of Colin Thatcher, his background, his family's wealth, his story-book marriage that somehow went sour, his stormy political career. The overpowering personality that made him above the law - almost. And the inside story of the police investigation that at last brought Colin Thatcher to justice.

This new and expanded version of the 1985 best-seller carries Colin Thatcher another fifteen years. Through his many appeals, his career in prison, and his skilful manipulation of the media while he campaigned from behind bars to be accepted as another of the wrongfully convicted, another David Milgaard. And the new evidence that even further confirms the guilt of the cunning politician.

This is the first book on one of sport's greatest stars, a portrait of a man who has dedicated his life to becoming the greatest quarterback ever. It's the story of John Wayne in Cleats, a father of four who led his team to Super Bowl glory at age 37.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of #7's NFL life and career.......2000-08-12

This book is a great read for Bronco and Elway fans of any age. It chronicles the life of John Elway from the time he was a child, through college and his joining of the Broncos, to his victory against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Black and white pictures are included with each chapter, and the center section 14 pages of color photos, as well. The author (Clay Lattimer) is a sports writer for the Rocky Mountain News, and he also draws on Sports Illustrated, Becket Football Monthly, and even Newsweek, as well as several other sports sources, so he packs a lot of information, dates, and statistics into each chapter. He also packs a lot of superfluous detail, too -- the writing meanders a bit and doesn't always stay on focus. But hey -- if you're an Elway fan (like me), who cares? The book is fun to read even in the places where it goes off topic. If there was such a thing as a "definitive" biography of an Elway, this would probably be it. If you're an Elway fan, get this book and enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars A must for the Elway fan.......1998-01-11

John Elway: Armed and Dangerous, by Clay Latimer, is a must for the John Elway and Denver Bronco fans. It is an easy to read book on Elway's career and personal life filled with quotes from players and unknown stories about other football greats. It sometimes drags a little as it gets off the subject quite a bit.

The story behind the Rings which tells how Jackson got the rights to make the film and the permission and funding to make three films rather than collapsing the story into just one or two films, interviews, and other behind the scenes material from the making of the landmark films. 4 out of 5 stars Keen Insight into Pre-Rings Jackson.......2004-11-30

I couldn't help but notice this in one of the above reviews of the book..."This book is ridiculous as the writer doesn't even know his subject, Peter Jackson, in person."

I find that statement interesting because the book discusses at great length the relationship between the author and Jackson. At various points in Jackson's early movies, the author actually helped out on his movies.

As to the un-authorized biography question, the author was given access to write the book on all Jackson films up to the Lord of the Rings. I just can't imagine how you could read this book and come to the conclusion that the author didn't even know Jackson.

As for my opinion, I'm often facinated by the early careers of men like Jackson. There's already a ridiculous amount of info out there on Lord of the Rings, but this book gives you a peek at Jackson's beginnings, and I enjoyed that very much.

If you're buy this book for some kind of Rings Insider, go elsewhere. If you want to see Jackson before his epic, this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars biographer who does not know his subject.......2004-07-06

This book is ridiculous as the writer doesn't even know his subject, Peter Jackson, in person. He was refused interviews and visits on the set of LOTR. All he knows are information through magazine articles that have been published and read many times before. He criticizes Fellowship of the Ring without a real knowledge of Tolkien or the story itself. The writer is somewhat fascinated by Jackson but a biography must contain information that has not been published in movie magazines and in tabloids. There is no information on the person, only on what Jackson has done so far in the movie business. The timeline of this biography is cut off after the release of The Two Towers, meaning there is no word on Return of the King and its worldwide success and critical acclaim. Actors are quoted without their knowledge, things are taken out of context and the style of writing is poor. While the research of the films made prior to LOTR is interesting, those are all information that is avilable elsewhere as well. A very disappointing read, if you are a true fan of PJ and LOTR.

      2 out of 5 stars Bad taste.......2004-05-20

Somehow it's always a little alarming to see "An Unauthorized Biography" on the dust jacket of a book, and Ian Pryor's "Peter Jackson: From Prince of Splatter to Lord of the Rings" is no exception. This crazy quilt of magazine articles is obviously a rush-job, and leaves a "bad taste" in the mouth."

Peter Jackson is best known for co-writing and directing hit movie trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." But he started off as a young Kiwi boy experimenting with a camera, and later getting together with his buddies to film the low-budget horror/SF-comedy "Bad Taste." An understated indie career led to the brilliant docudrama "Heavenly Creatures," which kick-started the career of star Kate Winslet. And from then on, he started the sprawling adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved epic fantasy, which has been embraced as a worldwide phenomena on par with "Star Wars."

Peter Jackson (who reportedly condemns this biography) is a fascinating figure in modern filmmaking. Unfortunately, since this biography is unauthorized and unapproved, Pryor has to stitch together just about every magazine article or press release ever written about Jackson. It's very unsatisfying since all of it has been said before. And the first time around, it didn't sound so.... well, smarmy.

Pryor paints Jackson in extreme colors, apparently so his adoration won't seem "fannish." But it doesn't make Jackson seem like a three-dimensional person. It makes him seem either like a saintly genius, or a creep. His personal life, friendships and interactions with actors aren't really dealt with, which makes him seem a lot more distant than he is. At least there's no dirt-dishing -- Jackson seems to have led a pretty much blameless life.

Pryor's writing style leaves something to be desired. He misspells some of Tolkien's words like "uruk-hai" (which he spells "urak-hai"). And Pryor uses overwritten gushing to cover up the book's biggest flaw: He doesn't know what Jackson is like. Pryor only describes his behavior, his words, and what other say about him -- the man himself remains an enigma at the book's end.

The saving grace of "Peter Jackson" is how it shows off the impact Jackson has had on his native New Zealand, both as a filmmaker and as a worldwide celebrity. However, this can't gloss over the opportunistic, slightly sneering tone that pervades Pryor's book. If you like Jackson -- as a director and a person -- it will make you squirm.

Fans of Peter Jackson may be hungry for more info on this beloved director. But you're better off waiting for the official (and approved) biography by Brian Sibley. Ian Pryor's "Peter Jackson: From Prince of Splatter to Lord of the Rings" has the slippery feeling of a rushed-to-print biography to cash in a filmmaker's fame.

4 out of 5 stars Who Is This Guy and How Did He Pull It Off?.......2004-04-28

Before LOTR,who ever of Peter Jackson? You know the legendary story....a somewhat successful maker of 'B' monster movies(from a foreign land)gets the chance of the century,to make a titanic epic with a titanic budget from an impossible to film book. Certain personal failure is forcast which will not only end his career but will ruin one of the world's largest studios. To the stunned amazement of all,Jackson successfully makes 'LOTR' and is immently successful in ever way that can be measured....a new benchmark that all other films will be judged against. Who is this guy and how is it so few people outside New Zealand knew of him? It's a biography so you learn lots about who Peter Jackson is and where he came from. Surprisingly, the author doesn't spend large amounts of time on LOTR filming technicalities. His emphasis is on how Jackson and his filming companions went about learning film, new technologies and how to apply these to their art. What the author spends a bit of time on is the realities of Hollywood studio politics and how that affects the sort of movies we see. I found that to be fascinating. In the PJ/LOTR saga there are 2 questions for me that never got answered to my satisfaction. The first is why did the first Aragorn,Stuart Townsend, det dismissed 1 week before shooting with no replacement in sight? With all the research that went into casting, it seems like a big mistake to go looking for a new leading character in a week with so much money and chance riding on that choice. Second is the exact reason New Line decided to invest so much of it's company's success or failure into a relatively unknown producer? Usually the reason is stated that the studio head just liked what he heard and saw, but that doesn't sound like solid business practice in America and not a technique a hardnosed CEO would use. Both questions get asked in the book and are sadly glossed over. It's still a good book and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

First Things First is not just another time management program. Rather, this is a program that connects the investment of time to our deeper priorities in life. The concepts espoused by Dr. Covey are profound, powerful and pragmatic.

Rather than offering you another clock, First Things First provides you with a compass. While other programs teach you harder, faster, and smarter First Things First teaches you direction and priorities because where you are heading is more important than how fast you are going.

Keeping with Dr. Covey's tradition, this program is about effectiveness not just efficiency. But not just effectiveness in your business life, but in your personal life as well.

Some people on the reviews complained about the book not just being Covey talking...but if you notice the book is written by three people (yeah, Amazon only shows 2, but I have the book in front of me) The CD is a good highlight to explaining the basics to the First Things First principles. The cd says to get the book for using the meat and potatoes of the book...BUT there is also a 3 Disc set out there which is Unabriged and tells it all (for some reason I can't find it on Amazon...but have found it in searching around the net) So if you want the basics to remind yourself of what you are doing (Review regularly to make it a part of your life is a common self improvement strategy) is quicker than re-reading the book over and over... especially when given the gift of traffic to slow down and enjoy the CD.

Uncle Dick Wootton's tale spans a broad chunk of the 19th century American frontier. Originally a mountain man, Uncle Dick ran the gamut of wild west professions: he was a scout, hunter, trapper, trader, freighter, and rancher. He narrowly escaped death on numerous occasions and he was an avid Southern sympathizer during the Civil War. Full of humor, Uncle Dick's memoirs include a description of "Hobnobbing with Brigham Young" and spooky tales of headless senoritas. Truly an encyclopedia of life on the southwestern frontier.

Although a captivating, intriguing and fascinating account of life on the western frontier from the 1830's through 1870's, one has to question how much of this is fabrication for his own self esteem. While describing his life as a trapper, trader, Indian fighter, scout, guide, freighter, road builder, stagestop operator, etc., Wootton portrays himself somewhat as a braggart and egotistical individual. He does not hesitate to tell his readers how he "could find water better than anyone else"; "shoot better than anyone else"; one of the first to take sheep from New Mexico to California; first to put through a toll road in Colorado; had the first two story building in Denver; the list goes on. If half of what he said is true, so be it. Wootton's book is very good reading and it does depict life extremely well for those days, but at the same time, he seems to be desirous of being the main, most important character for the times represented.

                              Book Description

Traces war in Europe from the aftermath of the French Revolution to the eve of the First World War. Treating warfare as much wider than simply the product of military planning and technology, but a reflection of society itself, Wawro includes discussion of:

-The Napoleonic Wars and the Battle of Waterloo
-Napoleon III and the militarization of Europe
                              -The Franco-Prussian War, 1870-71
                              -New technologies and weapons
                              -Seapower and naval warfare
-The outbreak of the First World War

Combining original work on Bismarck's Wars, Austria-Hungary and Italy, with the latest writing on European armies and navies in the modern period, this book details the evolution of land and naval warfare and highlights the swirling interplay of society, politics and military decision-making.

5 out of 5 stars The book to start with on 19th century European military history.......2007-05-18

This excellent book published in 2000 is an up-to-date, chronological discussion on the evolution of warfare on land and sea in the momentous century that witnessed the peak of Europe's domination of the World. It takes us from 1792 with the start of the French Revolutionary Wars to the outbreak of WWI in 1914. It does not present that subject dryly, only as a specialized topic, but inserts it masterfully within its broader cultural context and shows the mutual influence of changes in the way war was fought and the developments on the political, social and technological levels.

                              Important subjects covered are :
-The Napoleonic Wars and the Battle of Waterloo
-The Restoration period and the new wave of revolutions (1815-49)
-Napoleon III and the militarization of Europe (1848-66)
-The rise of Prussia and Italy (1861-66)
                              -The Franco-Prussian War (1870-71)
-New weapons and the new imperialism (1877-1905)
-The developments in seapower and naval warfare (1890-1914)
-The European arms race from 1911 to 1914
-The outbreak of the First World War in 1914

This was a fascinating period in military history and more generally in European history and this book really stands out in quality because of its broad scope and penetrating insights. It is extremely informative in that it is fairly concise (225 pages) yet always gets the important points right. Drawing from an extensive bibliography of the most recent and advanced historical research, it really puts together the pieces of a(rather complex)puzzle. The style is fluid and "to the point". It would be hard to write a better synthesis to find one's way in such a huge subject where literature is (too) plentiful and of (very) variable quality. It can serve as an introduction to the novice in the field but will also satisfy and enrich the more experienced reader.

                                Book Description

Karen Silkwood, an employee of the Kerr-McGee plutonium processing plant, was killed in a car crash on her way to deliver important documents to a newspaper reporter in 1974. Silkwood was a union activist concerned about health and safety issues at the plant, and her death at age twenty-eight was considered by many to be highly suspicious. Was it Kerr-McGee's revenge on a troublesome whistleblower? Or was it part of a much larger conspiracy reaching from the Atomic Energy Commission to the FBI and the CIA?

Richard Rashke leads us through the myriad charges and countercharges, the theories and facts, and reaches conclusions based solely on the evidence in hand. Originally published in 1981, his book offers a vivid, edgy picture of the tensions that racked this country in the 1970s. However, the volume is not only an important historical document. Complex, fascinating characters populate this compelling insider's view of the nuclear industry. The issues it explores--whistleblowers, worker safety, the environment, and nuclear vulnerability--have lost none of their relevance today, twenty-six years after Silkwood's white Honda Civic was found trapped in a concrete culvert near Oklahoma City.

For the Cornell edition, Rashke has written a Preface and three short chapters that explore what has been learned about Silkwood since the book's original publication, explain what happened to the various actors in the drama, and discuss the long-term effects of the events around Silkwood's death.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Addition to Studying Karen Silkwood!.......2006-06-05

This book is not easy but it is readable if you pay attention to details about the nuclear industry. I suspect Karen's death was murder because she was getting too involved in trying to protect her colleagues and herself from getting cancer. Although the movie version changes the relationship between she and her housemate, this book explains so much more. It is a must have book involving a conspiracy that has never truly gone away. Kerr-McGee is still alive and well and thriving but Karen Gay Silkwood was an important and tragic heroine who died risking her life. She may not have been mother of the year to her three children but her contributions and searh for the truth about nuclear contamination is admirable. I know more about her and I like her. Of course, she is not flawless but human like the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Courage Where We Find It.......2005-05-19

Here is a story that has probably been largely forgotten, of a young woman who fought a powerful corporation and an inept government (and very likely died for her efforts), and the idealistic and courageous people who came together to discover the truth.

If you were alive in the 70s you might remember Karen Silkwood, her mysterious death, and the court case that went on for years. At least two movies were made about her, but movies scripts can seldom tell the whole story or portray history with accuracy because of the demands of drama and story arc. So while I thought that I had a fairly good understanding of the events of Karen Silkwood's death, I have learned from reading this book that there was so very much more to the story. Not only was Silkwood incredibly brave, but the lawyers who took on her case were equally so. In more than one instance, Dan Sheehan, the lead attorney, must tell his investigator, "You're about to be killed. I've been contacted by the White House..."

From rural Oklahoma and an undereducated young working class woman whose cause was simply to improve the working conditions for the employees in a Kerr-McGee plutonium plant, arose what was possibly a conspiracy that could rival any international spy network: FBI, CIA, NSA, the White House, double agents, foreign powers, death threats, and more. How could such a simple woman as Karen Silkwood become involved in this level of intrigue? Richard Rashke did a masterful job of research, presenting the evidence in such a way that the reader can evaluate the evidence himself.

If Silkwood's story were not true, this book would stand as spirited fiction and would make better reading than many a spy novel; but Silkwood's story is true and this book exposes the depth of corruption, greed, cover-ups, and abuse of power that our government practiced in the 60s and 70s, and probably still practices today. The difference then though, is that exposing the government's actions led to reform-today, no one seems to care.

5 out of 5 stars One Conspiracy Theory That Just Might Be True.......2003-10-18

I became interested in Karen Silkwood after watching the 1983 movie "Silkwood". The film seemed to suggest that Silkwood was murdered, but a number of reviews I subsequently read dismissed "Silkwood" as an irresponsible docudrama that was based on sensationalism rather than fact.

After reading Richard Rashke's "The Killing of Karen Silkwood", I'd have to say that the film didn't take its allegations far enough. Based on thousands of pages of court documents, including depositions, sworn statements, internal memos, and federal records, Rashke makes a convincing case for the following:

Silkwood was deliberately contaminated with plutonium by someone at Kerr-McGee, perhaps on several occasions. Had she lived, Silkwood had a good likelihood of developing cancer because of the significant exposure she experienced.

Silkwood was most likely carrying important documents the night she was murdered; among other things, she had proof that 42.5 pounds of plutonium was missing from K-M's Cimarron plant, which is enough to make three or four nuclear bombs.

Security at the Cimarron plant was dangerously lax, as were safety measures. Workers received little education in regards to nuclear energy or the safety risks that accompany it, and consequently contamination was not taken seriously by employees.

Union members' (and particularly Karen Silkwood's) rights were repeatedly violated by K-M officials, who continually interfered in union activities and even began to spy on Silkwood.

However, the conspiracy surrounding Silkwood's death became even more heinous and inconceivable as Silkwood's side investigated in preparation for trial. Though the truth will probably never be known, Rashke lays out a compelling - though sketchy - account, involving the FBI, the CIA, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the National Security Agency (NSA), the Justice Department, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and a shadowy network of Iranians, Russians, and Israelis. Rashke hints at an international plutonium smuggling ring, and supplies evidence that the FBI was responsible for illegally and covertly spying on a number of organizations as late as the mid-1970s, including various labor unions and their members - and Silkwood was one of their targets.

Rashke's story might sound unbelievable, but most of it is based on public court documents. His interviews with the assorted players in the case may be less trustworthy; yet, many statements are corroborated by court papers. Also lending credence to the Silkwood camp's version of the story is the fact that several significant witnesses died, disappeared, or were threatened during the investigation and ensuing court case. Additionally, the Silkwood lawyers and investigator received death threats and were followed and even assaulted - one must wonder why, if the Silkwood case was wholly without merit. Especially appalling is the federal government's role in the affair, and their failure to cooperate with the civil case.

"Who Killed Karen Silkwood" reads like a novel - it's a compelling book that's hard to put down. Indeed, I expect that I won't soon be able to forget about Silkwood's story and its larger implications. I'm far from what you'd call a conspiracy nut (though I love the X-Files, I identify with Scully as opposed to Mulder!) - yet, the evidence in this case is as convincing as it is frightening. The final two pages will simply blow you away.

My only gripe - Rashke's update to the 2nd edition of the book (released to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Silkwood's death) was sorely lacking. He made no mention of what's become of those involved in the case; of any information, either directly or indirectly related to the case, that's been discovered since the end of the investigation; or of the movie, which was a critical and box-office success. Rashke coins the newest section "The Legacy", but he doesn't discuss Silkwood's legacy even briefly. The new chapters focus on the court battles since May 1979 and K-M's troubles with and termination of their nuclear program, but speak little of Silkwood.

                                5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2001-11-17

I have yet to encounter a non- fiction piece so captivating and hard to put down as The Killing of Karen Silkwood. This book goes far beyond her life as depicted in the movie, and the story behind all the people who believed in her and sacrificed tremendous amounts of time and energy at great personal danger to themselves after her death is phenomenal. What really amazed me was the sheer number of government agencies that were involved in spying on and covering up evidence as revealed through depositions, leaks, and court ordered documents. So many that no one seemed to be able to link them together (not even among themselves) except Silkwood's legal and investigative team. I had no idea so many police type agencies existed. It really is unsettling. The research this author did feels exhausting it is so through. The story goes on for over 10 years after her death, and it is well worth reading. It is alot more than just a private citizen (survivors) suing a private corporation. This book is reprinted after many years since it's original publication with several follow-up chapters added. The added chapters really tease you especially where the author indicated that a confidential inside source revealed that they saw a file that documented that the FBI knew very clearly who killed Karen Silkwood.

Skeptical Environmentalism is Robert Joseph Kirkman's critical overview of the speculative tendencies of academic environmental philosophy. Drawn in part from sources in the history of philosophy and the history and philosophy of the natural sciences, the argument concludes with a reconception of environmental problems, and of the proper roles of philosophy and the natural sciences in addressing them.
