Book Description
A story of tenacity, luck, toughness - and controversy. Joseph Isaac Gutnick - variously known as Diamond Joe for his mining exploits, Demon Joe for his presidency of the Melbourne Demons, and the Lubavitcher Rebbe's Special Emissary for the integrity of the Land of Israel is a fantastic mix of contradictions. All but wiped out in the 1987 stockmarket crash, he is one of the few high-flyers who managed to survive, and slowly work his way back to become one of Australia's wealthiest and most successful goldminers.

Not suitable for Go players.......2002-08-21
There is a small community of programmers attempting to create Go playing computer programs and this effort has met with some small success. To say the least, this work is in it's infancy - at least if this book is any indication.
If you're actually interested in Go, this book is not going to be much help. There are numerous alternative publications suitable for learning about the game. By the authors' own admission, virtually none of the "endgame positions" featured in this book would ever appear in a real game of Go played between humans with reasonable skill.
I imagine the material is somewhat interesting, at least in the abstract sense, but I would not recommend it to anyone looking for more than that.
Interesting reading, but not worth of owning.......1999-11-05
The title of the book should be understod literally. The book is not about 'last point' in sence of final argument to the topic, but really about which player, white or black gets the last point in Go game. This also means, that if you utilize all knowledge from this book either in your playing of Go or incorporate it into Go playing program, you at best score 2 points more territory in comparison to you opponent than without this knowledge. Reading this book is revealing in some sence, since it proves some 'common sence' assumptations wrong and gives some insights of mathematical handling of the Go, but the scope of the book is very limitted.
Very important book for the combinatorial games theorist.......1997-08-17
Here's where all of you who are bored with Computer Chess and conventional mathematics should be spending your time. This is a
deep book that hints at many interesting subjects. If you're a combinatorial games
theorist you already know about this book. If you
arent read this book and become one

The Brand Mindset.......2003-10-23
Although I am owner and operator of a quaint establishment in a small suburban town, I wanted the community and the world to know about the image I was creating for my product. The Brand Mindset was the vehicle I used to transport my thinking and my product to developing the brand recognition I wanted. It was very informative and clearly instructive. Chapter four, "The Brand Promise" was particularly beneficial. The format , compared to other brand strategy books was superior in conveying the steps to establishing product recognition. An absolute for the serious entrepreneur.
The bible of bulding a genuine brand.......2002-12-09
The Brand Mindset is a must read for any company trying to build a genuine brand. Duane Knapp clearly and concisely guides his readers through the process of developing a blue print for success that will take them well into the future. His knowledge and expertise are invaluable, and his book has become required reading for everyone in our company. An excellent tool for any business!
The BrandStrategy Doctrine: Make It a "Way of Life".......2002-10-10
This book clearly, concisely, and thoroughly explains why a genuine brand is a "way of life" understood and lived by everyone in an organization--not just a superficial marketing or advertising ploy. One must "think like a Brand", make a BrandPromise, communicate, live, and leverage the Brand. A strategic planning mindset is emphasized. Numerous detailed examples and graphics are provided to illustrate key concepts underlying the thought process involved in a BrandStrategy Doctrine. This book is a blueprint for understanding and applying the concept of branding to an organization. Each chapter ends with a one-page action guide. The final two chapters cover topics not found in any other book on branding: branding on the Internet, with evaluation criteria for one's website, and specific tools to aid brand developers in staying connected with customers and stakeholders. These tools include quizzes, questionnaires, and checklists. No stone is left unturned to stress the importance of the brand in achieving excellent customer service, as each employee represents the brand. For example, how to answer the phone and how to most effectively communicate nonverbally are discussed, in order to "live the BrandPromise". This goes well beyond what I would have expected from a book on this subject. If you wish to buy only one book on branding from what is available, buy this one. It is comprehensive yet easy and fun to read, and makes not just the planning, but the execution and continual evaluation of a BrandStrategy seem quite "doable". After reading The Brand MindSet, I believed that any company could follow in the footsteps of other successfully branded companies.
The BrandMindset is a Must Read.......2002-06-02
I purchased The BrandMindset to use as a reference for a marketing project I was working on for my MBA program. However, I wish that I had this book when I was working as a marketing communications manager. The BrandMindset clearly illustrates why brand strategy must be incorporated into every business function. The book demonstrates why in today's competitive environment, a company's brand is crucial in providing product distinction. A brand's promise must be delivered in all aspects of the business, not just promoted in advertisements or logos. As a student, I especially liked the real-world examples and brand-profiles included in each chapter. They helped to present a clear picture of how this process is applied and proof of its success.
The treasure lies in the last chapter in which the author has provided several tools and sample documents for a company to use when mapping out their own BrandStrategy. Everyone from the executive to the receptionist should read this book, and I would strongly recommend it as a current resource to anyone studying marketing or management.
The Brand Mindset.......2001-11-21
The Brand Mindset by Duane E. Knapp is a very helpful tool in building a brand for a company. Mr. Knapp lays out the method to succesful branding in an easy to follow and easily referenced manner. The examples were very helpful and relevant. If you are considering examining your brand and what you are promising your customers, you should consult this book. I know that I have come away with a whole new view as to how my company's brand should be built.

Alien among us.......2004-08-02
Hans Rudi Giger, a direct descendant of Hieronymus Bosch, H.P. Lovecraft and Salvador Dali, is a unique artist whose works depict cosmological visions and nightmarish dream-state revelations. As you leaf through the glorious illustrations in 'H.R. Giger's Biomechanics', you begin to realize that it takes a deviant personality to create deviant art of this caliber. The kind of paintings on display here are something nobody could conceive without total 24/7 commitment to unleashing the subconscious for all the world to see.
Nowadays of course, H. R. Giger's style (coined 'biomechanical') has become commonplace, trivialized; you can observe his influence in computer-game graphics, movies, literature, interior design, architecture... And isn't that the greatest compliment to his work, the horde of imitators living proof that Giger has tapped into something deep for which there was no adequate vocabulary before him. It probably resided there before the genus homo existed, somewhere in the spinal cord, in the first primate dreams.
What none of HRG's imitators have reached, is his unrivaled, casual mastery of the airbrush. For HRG often uses the surrealist method, whereby his paintings are not consciously planned but rather organically grown and given the freedom to invade the canvas - an inordinately challenging modus operandi considering Giger's weapon of choice. The works of the imitators betray their predesigned origin in wavering use of the airbrush, in naively copied Giger motifs. The sycophants have no mastery over the vocabulary, method, or the medium.
Presenting HRG's artworks in roughly chronological order, 'Biomechanics' charts the evolution of the biomechanical style from the first ink drawings from the 1960s to the acrylic paintings of the late 1980s. The master's 'commentary track' runs the length of the book, explaining the impetus behind major works, such as the 'N.Y. City' series and 'Erotomechanics'. You can practically feel HRG's exitement as he details the first experiments with the airbrush. The airbrush was originally a tool for photo retouching, which remained its primary use for decades, but in the hands of HRG it turned into a weapon capable of transmuting Freudian and Jungian theories on sexual perversions into photorealistic imagery.
Designs on 'Alien' and 'Poltergeist II' are examples of how effortlessly HRG crosses the boundary between 2D and 3D, painting and sculpture. They also reveal his background as a student of architecture and industrial design at the Zurich School of Applied Arts.
Well, either you 'get it' or you don't. There are people who instinctively recognize the worth in HRG's art. If you are the sort of person who requires a rational basis for purchasing 'Biomechanics', suffice it to say that the influence of these works is so widespread that failure to trace that influence back to the source reveals a profound ignorance on contemporary visual culture.
Good introduction to his more complicated works.......1997-12-29
This was the first book of his that I bought. It is very well done like all the rest. It is a good book to get your "feet wet" and to decide if you want to go any further into his work. I liked it very much, and recommend it as an introduction.

Book Description
H. R. Giger, Oscar-winning designer of the hit movie Alien and widely considered the world’s finest dark fantasy artist, redefined edgy, contemporary art starting in the 1980s with his biomorphic creatures inhabiting gorgeously grim dystopias. His visionary art is unmistakable. Unfettered by labels or category, Giger’s work has appeared in every conceivable format — from set design to sculpture, paintings to airbrush, book covers to album covers. This massive, oversized volume, limited to just 300 copies worldwide, showcases 200 of Giger's paintings and sculptures, including design paintings for Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums, and the film Poltergeist II. The book is bound in black leather, with a black cloth slipcase — all embossed in gold foil. It includes a signed and numbered print of one of Giger’s drawings, which can be removed and framed. The foreword by longtime Giger fan Harlan Ellison, who calls him “our latter-day Hieronymus Bosch,” adds welcome context and insight.
Customer Reviews:
Slightly dissapointed with this edition.......2007-05-04
Giger's Biomechanics book itself gets five stars. This review pertains to the Limited Edition which consists of the following 3 items:
1. Hardbound copy drawn from what I assume is the latest print run (2005) of the standard edition. The book is conspicuously marked Seventh Printing on the inside front cover's endpapers. I'm a little dissapointed that the book was not designated as the first printing of a unique edition.
2. Signed/numbered print, one of three different images available. The print is roughly the same dimensions as the book. It's printed on 2-ply coated stock and reproduces very rough graphite concept sketches. Given the stature of Giger as an artist, I guess it's a bit much to expect a top quality print for the price offered here. That said, the image included with my copy is pretty crudely drawn, and I wouldn't consider framing it.
3. Cloth covered slipcase in place of the dustjacket from the standard edition. The slipcase is attractive and sturdy.
The limited edition was somewhat of a disappointment at Amazon's price of $122.00. Having not already owned a copy of the standard edition, I'm not unhappy with my purchase. I personally wouldn't consider this worth buying if I already owned a copy of the standard edition, and certainly not worth the $275.00 list price asked by Giger's US website.

Book Description
The 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing (FIW) was sent to Korea in December 1950 expressly to deal with the threat posed by the all-new MiG-15 fighter that had made its combat debut the previous month. It remained the sole Sabre wing in-theatre for a full year, its pilots tangling with Russian-flown MiGs up over the Yalu River on a near-daily basis. Through sheer skill and superior machinery, the 4th FIW prevailed, and the skies over North Korean remained firmly in UN control. This book includes numerous photos of aces and their aircraft, as well as extensive first-hand accounts.

Through extensive and candid interviews, the authors of this ground-breaking work have studied burglars' decision-making processes within the context of their streetlife culture. In this volume they present their findings in the areas of motivation, target selection, methods of entering and searching a residence, and methods of selling stolen goods, concluding with a discussion of the theoretical implications of their research.

Book Description
Motivated variously by the desire to reject consumerism, to live closer to the earth, to embrace voluntary simplicity, or to discover a more spiritual path, homesteaders have made the radical decision to go "back to the land," rejecting modern culture and amenities to live self-sufficiently and in harmony with nature. Drawing from vivid firsthand accounts as well as from rich historical material, this gracefully written study of homesteading in America from the late nineteenth century to the present examines the lives and beliefs of those who have ascribed to the homesteading philosophy, placing their experiences within the broader context of the changing meanings of nature and religion in modern American culture.
Rebecca Kneale Gould investigates the lives of famous figures such as Henry David Thoreau, John Burroughs, Ralph Borsodi, Wendell Berry, and Helen and Scott Nearing, and she presents penetrating interviews with many contemporary homesteaders. She also considers homesteading as a form of dissent from consumer culture, as a departure from traditional religious life, and as a practice of environmental ethics.
Customer Reviews:
homesteading: origins and history.......2007-06-30
I enjoyed reading this very comprehensive academic treatise on the causes and history of the modern American urge to re-homestead. Through interviews with modern homesteaders (e.g., first-hand experience with the Nearings and their legacy) and explication of the ethos of John Burroughs, this book explores the fundamental desire to spiritually re-align through the practice of homesteading. Through it, I have come to understand my own desire to escape the practices and principles of modern America; my husband and I have decided to homestead and this was a good fundamental beginning that helped me explore and share my dissatisfaction with today's society. It is a very in-depth book which I enjoyed because it helped me to discover that innominate urges in myself have a common origin and societal basis, and even a name. For those of you who have an unsettled feeling of discontent with your current life and the choices available through organized religion, maybe this thought-provoking book is for you.
