Nicholas Gage's meticulously documented and consistently absorbing account chronicles the stormy love affair between Maria Callas (1923-77) and Aristotle Onassis (1906-75). Gage sees the soprano who reinvented the art of opera and the tycoon who transformed the shipping industry as kindred spirits, drawn into romance by a deep connection to their Greek origins and a shared sense that, despite all they had achieved, something was missing. They found that absent element in a once-in-a-lifetime passion, which Onassis betrayed by marrying Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968. Gage appears to share the view of the tycoon's Greek coterie, who viewed this marriage as an act of hubris that inevitably led to financial and personal reversals which embittered Onassis in his final years. But he doesn't blame the tycoon for Callas's decline, pointing out that by the time they met, she was already experiencing severe vocal problems and was eager for respite from her taxing performance commitments. In any case, her career and his business dealings take a back seat here to Gage's evocative portrait of his subjects' outsized personalities and the jet-set society in the gaudy postwar years. Some of the new information is revelatory, particularly Gage's persuasive contention that Callas bore Onassis a son who died hours after his birth in 1960. At other times his investigative-journalist approach seems too weighty for this highly personal story of love, rage, and big, big egos. Fortunately, these lapses don't seriously mar a text distinguished by smooth prose, the seamless interweaving of several narrative strands, and a warm sympathy for its genuinely tragic protagonists. --Wendy Smith

Hearts On Fire........2006-11-26
I started reading this story fews days ago and I just couldn't put it down.A good book, good photos inserted and it's the full saga ever told about the Onassis's dynasty, though many events aren't evidently true.
A GOOD BOOK.......2006-07-28
I bought this book at a Supermarket Charity book sale, and I liked it. It told of the relationship between Ari and Maria as well as Jackie. I couldn't put it down, and it is a great summertime reading book.
false claims.......2006-01-02
This is a trashy book and the reader can only feel disgust at the indignities heaped upon this great artist. There are numerous inconsistencies and fabrications which defy reason and are not consistent with known facts, as follows:
If Maria Callas had been pregnant the world would have known about it because her condition would have become increasingly visible with each passing month. Gage states on pg 201 that after december 1959 "she would not appear in public for the next several months," ie. until March 1960 when according to him, she gave birth to a son.
This is a ludicrous claim as there are many photographs taken in February 1960 of Maria Callas in public, where she is as slim as ever and wearing dresses tightly fitted at the waist. One example is with Antonio Ghiringhelli at the première of Fellini's La dolce vita on 5 February 1960, in the Teatro Capitol in Milan and in the 2nd week of February in Paris she was photographed with famous coiffeur Alexandre and her agent Michel Glotz at the Théâtre des Champs Elysée, among others. The photographs prove that it is not possible by any stretch of the imagination to claim that in February 1960 Callas was 7 months pregnant.
According to Gage, on pg. 204 Maria said in an interview with France-soir on 13th Feb 1960 "«I don't want to sing anymore. I want to live, just like a normal woman, with children, a home, a dog..." If Callas no longer wanted to sing, what about her famous performances later in the same year, of Norma at the Epidaurus theatre in Greece, negotiations for which began in Jan/Feb 1960? It should be noted that Maria officially denied that this supposed interview with France-soir ever took place! Her denial was reported in the Greek press on 19th Feb 1960.
Another ridiculous claim in the book is that Maria Callas wanted to deliver the child early, at 8 months, and that "the clinic was not equipped to deal with the crisis", etc.
In the 60's cesarians would only be performed if severe medical abnormaliies were detected. In Italy (largely catholic) physicians were forbidden from assisting patients in either the prevention or termination of pregnancy. At that time over 50% of babies born before 37 weeks died, and physicians were well aware of the dangers to both mother and baby. No physician would have allowed themselves to be pressured into taking such a risk, especially with somebody of the stature of Maria Callas.
Finally, the 'documentary evidence'for the birth and death of the supposed baby son are not evidence at all. Nowhere does it state the names of the baby's parents or the date and time of death which would be the case in official records. The issue date on these 'documents' is 23/10/1998 and 22/10/1998 (can be seen near bottom left in the poor reproducions) these documents were therefore not found in Maria Callas' private papers at the time of her death, as Gage states on pg 207. There is no concrete evidence linking these papers to Maria Callas at all.
It also seems too convenient that Maria's maid Bruna Lupoli who has always refused to speak to anyone about Callas, waited 40 years before revealing to Gage (a complete stranger, whom she has never met!!) this sensational secret of a baby son. This is surely stretching credibility.
The reason why this book seems believable and has perhaps fooled so many people is that Nicholas Gage is a skilled journalist and therefore able to successfully fabricate a story and make it sound credible, no matter how false or ridulous the individual 'facts'.
I would advise anybody who appreciates the great art of Maria Callas not to touch this book, as it is demeaning to her as an artist and a woman.
The story of this supposed baby born to Maria Callas is a complete fabrication and should be refuted wherever possible for the sake of historical truth.
Excellent book!.......2005-10-28
I read this when it first came out in paperback and cannot recommend it enough. This book sizzles! Anything and everything you have ever wanted to know about Callas and Onassis. This is a book that is difficult to put down. I read this in one sitting.
Could Not Put it Down Kind of Book!.......2005-09-30
I loved this book. I am the type of person who cannot seem to finish a book unless it totally captures my interest but this book from the beginning to end poured information about both Callas and Onassis that were so interesting. Although I felt the detailed day-to-day schedule on the voyage of Christina when Callas was on it was a bit boring due to too much details but it was still facinating. Mr. Gage, just seems really committed to relating facts, which is above all most important when writing biographies. Thank you for the wonderful book, Mr. Gage. Bravo! on a wonderful job.

Book Description
Paul O'Neill was the undisputed heart and soul of the four-time World Series-winning New York Yankees from 1993 to 2001. O'Neill epitomized the team's motto of hard work and good sportsmanship, traits instilled in him by his friend, confidant, lifelong model, and biggest fan: his dad, Chick O'Neill.
In Me and My Dad, O'Neill writes from the heart about the man who inspired in him a love for the game and a determination to always play his best. O'Neill remembers the highlights of his own amazing career: the Cincinnati Reds calling him up to the majors, his first World Series, being traded to the Yankees -- and taking part in their recent championship wins. He also reflects on his father's untimely death during the 1999 World Series and on the farewell tribute his fans gave him during his last game in Yankee Stadium.

Paul O'Neill and Chatwithastar.com.......2006-08-22
Mr. Burton Rocks, just wanted to thank you for this amazing work on Yankee baseball player Paul O'Neill. In these days of controversy on Barry Bonds and Pete Rose in baseball, it is refreshing to see sucyh a positive work on a Yankees player like Paul O'Neill. Contratulations and best of luck with your new blogging launch that's puts players like Paul O'Neill in touch with their fans at [...]
A nice tribute to his father, but not much else.......2006-04-26
While I can respect the idea of this book as a tribute to his father, I can't recommend it as an entertaining read. Paul O'Neill was a decent ballplayer with the Reds who became a great ballplayer with the Yankees, but he's pretty dull no matter what uniform he wears. This was a nice idea, but check it out of the library unless you live and die Paul O'Neill.
There's More to This Man..........2006-01-07
I am a Cincinnati Reds fan and will always associate Paul O'Neill with the Cincinnati Reds and not the Yankees. After all, he grew up in the Columbus, OH area and identified the Reds as his favorite team since childhood. He has also chosen to settle with his family in the Cincinnati area since retiring. The book is a wonderful exploration of the father/son relationship and reveals a human side of Paul O'Neill that we didn't always get to see on the field.
This is a good book!.......2005-04-29
This book is about Paul O'Neill and his relationship with his father. His relationship included the life lessons that his father taught him while they were on the diamond. Remember, it is important to have this relationship with a special family member so that you always would have somebody to talk to. I personally enjoyed this book and loved reading it. The book was kind of fuzzy throughout some parts. By this I mean, that some of the book was filled with filler. The book then went on to talk about how his father was important while he was on the road for a long time. In addition, while he was on his way to the majors. It is evident that Paul is a great author and he has great writing abilities. Finally, I would just like to say that this was an all-around great book!
Limited Appeal.......2005-01-31
Me and My Dad is Paul O'Neill's tribute to his late father Chuck O'Neill. The book takes you through Paul's life from playing homerun derby in his backyard as a child, to playing in the World Series as a New York Yankee. He places emphasis on his fathers influence and wisdom he shared with him through the many troubles he had in life. Throughout the book Paul tells us about his experiences and how his father could always put a positive spin on everything by relating life to baseball, or baseball to life. The book helps to give the reader a deeper and simpler look at professional athletes.
While it is a must read for any Yankee or Paul O'Neill fan, I can not recommend it to anyone else. Even for a baseball fan like myself it has limited appeal. It is short and not very well written; some parts seem to drag on and on about nothing. Yankee fans will love it just to get a deeper understanding of one of their better players, but others will laugh at Paul's girlyness and grow to dislike him by the end. Because of these reasons, I can only recommend this book to Yankee fans, and possibly women who like to see the softer and more sensitive side of men.

I just became a STAR WARS fan this year with the release of the Special Editions. I won this book at an author signing and trivia contest in Orlando. I carried it with me to school and all my Star Wars buddies went and bought a copy, too. Now we spend our lunch periods testing each other's knowledge of droids, ships, characters, villains, planets, etc. It is the best! Lots and lots of fun! Plus, I met one of the authors at the bookstore and he was so cool to talk to. Nice and friendly and wearing jeans. I hope he does another STAR WARS book

But watch out-even Yoda was stumped...test your knowledge of: All three STAR WARS movies, including the 20 anniversary commemorative SPECIAL EDITIONS; Divided into several thematic categories, over 1,300 questions (and 300+ pages) will test your knowledge of the SW universe with STAR POWER (ships to speeder bikes), I, ROBOT (droids), STAR TECH (technical specs, etc.), EWOK THIS WAY (Ewoks, of course), STAR WARFARE (self-explanatory), ALIEN FACES & PLACES (alien races and planets), WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE (galactic bounty hunters), REBEL RUMBLINGS & IMPERI AL TRANSMISSIONS (dialogue with missing words, which you have to figure out or match to the character who spoke the line), etc. Interspersed throughout the book are dossiers of Luke (FROM FARM BOY TO JEDI KNIGHT), Lei (PRINCESS BY VIRTUE, REBEL BY CHOICE) , Han (SMUGGLER'S BLUES), Vader (LORD OF THE DARK SIDE), etc. and all the trivia questions in those categories cover the designated characters. Plus nitpicker's guides (bloopers, snafus, screw-ups, etc.), behind-the-scenes and other obscure stuff. The book covers ALL three movies, plus questions on the SPECIAL EDITIONS. At the end of the book, you calculate your correct answers and refer to the scoring legend, which will determine if you are a Jedi Master, Defender of the Galaxy ( Full-Fledged Jedi Knight), Guardian of Justice and Freedom (Jedi Knight-Errant), or down to the worst level-sarlacc snackfood! I hate to use an often-mentioned phrase, but I couldn't put the book down! It was fun, fun, fun! No STAR WARS fan should be without this special 20th anniversary edition

Book Description
Roger North’s The Musicall Grammarian 1728 is a treatise on musical eloquence in all its branches. Of its five parts, I and II, on the orthoepy, orthography and syntax of music, constitute a grammar; III and IV, on the arts of invention and communication, form a rhetoric; and V, on etymology, consists of a history. Two substantial chapters of commentary introduce the text, which is edited here for the first time in its entirety: Jamie Kassler places his treatise within the broader context not only of North's musical and non-musical writings but also their relation to the intellectual ferment of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and Mary Chan describes physical and textual aspects of the treatise as evidence for North’s processes of thinking about musical thinking.

Book Description
Team Secrets of the Navy SEALs is written especially for business professionals who want to make it in today's extremely aggressive business environment. No force or unit has ever had more success than the SEALs. Author Robert Needham uses the lessons he's learned as a Navy SEAL to guide the reader through the role of being or becoming a leader. "To some, leadership is exemplified by the blind obedience to orders. It is a misconception that to coerce another person to do your bidding makes you a 'leader.'"Navy SEALs are recognized around the world as being the best. From their start as Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDU) in WWII to the founding of the SEALs in 1962, only 8,000 men have been allowed to join this top-notch unit. Needham is still on active duty as a SEAL and knows how to achieve results. "The ruthless effectiveness and efficiency of the SEAL Teams stems from the fact that we always start from, perfect, and practice the basics. The Team is a dynamic that works toward success, not hindered by pride, preservation, and self-interest."Needham's principles define and illustrate the word "team," and they will motivate business people working toward that common goal.
Customer Reviews:
good book on leadership.......2007-09-09
I did not read anything in this book that I would consider a secret. But I do think this is a very good book on leadership and team-building. I have read many leadership/team-building books and all have a few nuggets that make the book a worthwhile read. This book had all of those and more.
I have spent time in the military and have seen awesome levels of dedication to team. Sometimes this attitude can be transferred or built up in a civilian organization. But it takes a lot more work.
The problem as I see it is that the Seals are all volunteers and they really want to be the baddest mothers on the planet. They like to be cold, wet, and tired, and actually ask for more to prove they can handle anything. While in the civilian world, that kind of dedication is almost non-existent. While there are many people that don't mind, or even like, to work hard, they all know that when the whistle blows, its Miller time and they can go to their comfortable homes.
As far as the civilian world goes, you can try to build a great team, but you will never come close to the dedication of an elite military unit, not just Seals, but all branches have their elite teams. It just seems that you cannot build this culture because corporate America does not like it when you push your people past their known limits. Yes, you will make them better people, but companies are worried about lawsuits, not having the best team in the corporate world.
This book, if read and followed, will make you and your team better and more productive. The book goes into many subjects, like "know what you've got", "have an open door policy", "the menace of micromanagement", "have teammates, not lackeys", and a few others. While most of this may seem to be commonsense, I felt it was good to be reminded of these and to also have the author present a topic I am familiar with in a different light. Sometimes hearing something from a new angle makes it stick better.
This is an easy read and if you lead a team or want to be a better teammate, then this book is definitely worth the small cost. I recommend it and will read it again in the near future to make sure that the lessons taught here stick.
Team Secrets of the Navy Seals.......2007-08-20
Very good book. A must for all in management positions in the military, as well Americas first responders. No real secrets, however, the lay out fo the book along with the authors twists on the topics make it very educational and easy to read. Good for all LEO supervisors.
Delivers on the Title.......2007-07-07
This book delivers on the title. If you are in management and have an affinity for what the Nave Seals stand for you will like this book.
Great Book For Teaching Team Leadership Skills.......2006-08-29
As a management consultant, I've always been interested in anything that would help me get the message of team work across to my clients. I seen many people who attempt to lead but fail to do so. Many micro-manage, accept mediocrity, or finger point when something goes wrong. This book is a good guide on how to help - coach - someone who wants to be a great team leader. Lots of good examples and the chapter summary lessons are excellent and are great teaching and talking points of their own. I intend to give copies of this book to several of my clients as gifts.
Booyah and Hell Yeah!!!.......2006-03-14
I loved this book from front to back and in between. I am a highly motivated individual and already knew the majority of what the book had to say, but I learned more from it.
My step-father taught Me everything having to do with thinking like a Navy SEAL. No, he wasn't a SEAL...he was a Marine during Vietnam, and the SEAL's tried to recruit him, but he turned them down.
I am currently doing an online course for Business Management this year, and next year will be doing a Criminal Justice degree, then on to Police Academy.
I am a man, who believes a gun is not your first choice as a weapon as a Police Officer, it should be your last...under certain circumstances the first, but not very many.
My first three weapons, as a Police Officer will be, My brain, My mouth, and My intimidating appearance/persona. Then, I will go to the baton or pistol as necessary, or the situation dictates.

What to Eat if You Have Cancer (revised)
ASIN: 0976831619 |
Book Description
Upon learning that her breast cancer had spread to her liver, Carol Silverander was given a three percent chance of beating the disease, and was told she would probably live for just two years. This is the story of how she came to think about cancer in a different way, and discovered an innovative form of treatment that had been pioneered by two remarkable physicians in France. She beat the odds and, in the process, learned what every cancer patient should know-that they are always their own best advocate. In this book she takes readers through every stage of her journey, giving them the benefit of her hard earned knowledge in a thorough and easy-to-understand way. Perhaps most importantly, she sheds light on a new and scientifically sound way of looking at and treating disease-one that has profound implications for those suffering from any type of cancer or other degenerative pathology.
Customer Reviews:
A must read!.......2006-11-18
This beautifully written book is a tremendous help for cancer patients, family and friends of cancer patients, and anyone interested in good health. Carol's courageous attitude is an inspiration to all. You will not be disappointed with this book!
Great Resource for Someone Diagnosed With Stage 3-4 BC.......2006-06-27
I don't normally write reviews, but this book warrants one wholeheartedly. My mother was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 BC and I bought the book for myself, with the intent to read a patient's own life story and learn more about alternative treatments. I read the book in one sitting and immediately sent it off to my mother. It has been a source of TREMENDOUS comfort to her because this book is like having a friend who's 'been there' and makes everything just a little less scary because she's read about it ahead of time. A lot of books out there are targeted towards women with early stage BC (1 or 2)...this is a GREAT book for women with Stage 3 and 4 BC. I wholeheartedly recommend it. My mother references it all the time...I'm buying a replacement copy for myself.
A "must read" for cancer patients and those close to them.......2005-11-28
This book would not only be a very informative read for any woman dealing with breast cancer, but truly would be helpful to nearly any cancer patient. The author has written the book from her perspective and experiences with advanced breast cancer, but she touches on issues that many cancer patients face (the initial shock of diagnosis, the disparity in examination and treatment thoroughness among doctors, chemotherapy, decision making and long-term treatment options, alternative treatments, etc.). Being someone close to a cancer patient/survivor, I found the book to be very informative and helpful in gaining some insight as to what a cancer patient goes through (mentally and physically). Mechanically, the book flows nicely and is an easy read. It can be finished in an afternoon. The chapter on endobiogene is worth the price of the book alone and should be read by every cancer patient and every doctor and/or med student.
A Book about Living and Loving and Good Health.......2005-11-05
This is a beautifully told and extremely important story. It offers much more than advertised. Yes it is a story about living - really living - with advanced breast cancer. But it is also a story about living with any serious illness. More than that, it is a story about taking control of one's own health and well-being. Without any bitterness about medical mistakes that were made and without any preaching, the author shares her experiences and provides inspiration. Embedded within the text is another wonderful story of a family coming together to support one another on a journey to wellness. This book is written from the heart and reads more like a gripping novel than a non fiction account. It is easy to lose sight that the book also introduces a promising new medical approach for cancer patients and other health matters. I am buying copies of this book for friends and loved ones, both for the story and the practical possibilities.
Every woman should read this.......2005-10-20
I don't have cancer, but feel well-armed with the right questions and early info should I ever have to learn to live with a chronic illness. Carol's story is enlightening and touching. I read it in one sitting the day it came in the mail. Her honesty about her denial was an eye-opener. We all know someone with some form of cancer, and this book will help me deal with it. I'm also encouraged that there are oncologists out there who are willing to work with alternative therapies, and that the alternative therapies are now available to us here in the US. There is going to be a worn path to Pocatello! Thank you, Carol, for sharing with, teaching, and helping so many.

Book Description
This volume deals with the development of Britain's air defences during the years leading up to the outbreak of World War II, and the development of the system during the early period of the war, leading up to the Battle of Britain. Originally classified as "secret", this report was written during the war as an internal Air Ministry history by Cecil James, a historian working for the Air Historical Branch.
The report describes the development of Fighter Command and the air defence network, often called the "Dowding System", and in doing so makes it clear how much of the groundwork for success was laid down in the 1920s by those working at a time when radar had yet to be developed. It was indeed the integration of technological advances such as radar and reasonably efficient radio telephones that allowed the defences to keep pace with the ever-increasing speed and sophistication of bomber aircraft. The result was the world's first truly integrated air defence network, designed to give its commanders both a picture of the enemy's air attacks as they developed and a sophisticated command system to assign and control the defending forces sent up to meet the enemy in the air.

Book Description
During the last decade, research on global cities has exploded throughout the social sciences. It has now become one of the most exciting, if controversial approaches to the study of urban life today.
Fifty generous selections, including contributions from John Friedmann, Michael Peter Smith, Saskia Sassen, Peter Taylor, Manuel Castells, and Anthony King, explore the interrelationships between cities and globalization. The seven sections with accompanying editorial introductions guide the student through the key theoretical, methodological, and empirical debates.
The Global Cities Reader explores the major foundations and intellectual influences of research on globalized urbanization. Classic and contemporary case studies of globalizing cities from Europe, North America and East Asia as well as from emerging world city regions of the global South are presented. The political and cultural dimensions of global city formation are examined in separate sections. The reader concludes by examining the refinement and critique of global cities research in the last fifteen years.

Book Description
This text shows how health may be studied from geographical perspectives and reviews a wide range of studies linking health outcomes with social and physical environments. The structure of the book is designed to guide the reader through the relevant theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and research. It opens with definitions of health and an explanation of how they relate to geography, followed by illustrations of the different theoretical approaches employed. There is also a comprehensive overview of quantitative and qualitative methods. Research is then considered in two broad areas: first, the ways in which social processes operate in space to produce inequalities in health and health provision; second, the ways in which human modification of the environment (including air and water quality, and global environmental change) impacts upon health. The text is supported by current examples of research in a range of geographical settings. Pedagogical features include text boxes, directed further reading at the end of each chapter, a comprehensive bibliography and a guide to useful Internet resources.Anthony Gatrell has produced a website to accompany his book.
