Book Description
Despite hundreds of books and thousands of articles on Jackie Kennedy, surprisingly little is known about her mothers role in her life and achievements. Often dismissed as a social climber who faded into the woodwork after she divorced Jackies father the dashing, but disreputable Black Jack Bouvierand married the rich Hugh D. Auchincloss, Janet not only played a pivotal part in Jackies own wedding to JFK, but often served as a stand-in for Jackie during the White House years, and helped her cope with the children after the assassination. It was Janet who took charge on the night of November 22, 1963instructing the nanny to break the devastating news to young Caroline and John, Jr., so Jackie wouldnt have to do it.he only book to explore this fascinating mother-daughter relationship, Janet Jackie is filled with stories never before published, shedding new light on the personal life of an American icon.
Customer Reviews:
Janet: Before Jackie, there was Mrs. Auchincloss.......2007-04-02
I rather liked this book. Just a few things kept it from being 4 stars. I found this book a very level-headed look at Janet Norton Lee Bouvier Auchincloss. I have read so many biographies of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and heard very little good about Mrs. Auchincloss. Rarely is an ambitious woman treated fairly by press and history. This book was a no nonsense look at the real power behind JBKO. Imagine the dinner with DeGaulle without her command of French, as taught at table. Mrs. Auchincloss demanded that her children speak French only at table and required them to ask for things in French. This served Jacqueline very well in the years ahead. Mrs. Auchincloss like things just so, and so did her daughter.
The only problem I had with this book, and I hate to criticize the author, but it is a problem for me, is the fact that this book is generally favorable in tone to both mother and daughter. Then, for no reason, somewhere in a story, the author would take a potshot or some gossip that was unfavorable to the general tone of the book. It's not a fatal flaw that would prevent you from enjoying this book, and in truth, I probably fault Ms. Pottker's editor for not catching the incidents.
I recommend this book. After reading just about every book about Mrs. Auchincloss and her two famous elder daughters, I find this one to be the most even-handed in relation to Jacqueline's mother, and these little foibles will not detract noticibly from that story.
Different view of Jackie.......2005-05-23
I have read everything written about Jackie K., and it tends to be either gushing or vicious. This book deals with the influences that led to her becoming the type of person she was. Being born in 1929, she was a Depression baby, and she had the same desire for security that most people from that time have had.
The attributes most admired by the world were the ones her mother instilled in her [speaking French, riding ability, fashion sense] and Jackie probably had mixed feelings about this.
The book made me see Jackie as a more vulnerable paerson and I have nothing but admiration for her mother.
Enjoyable Reading.......2004-07-08
I loved this book. One thing I learned from reading
this book was the name of Jacqueline's 1st daughter which she miscarried. I have made many trips to D.C., especially making a point of visiting President Kennedy's gravesite where the bodies of Jacqueline and her two children are also buried. The name of her daughter on the gravsite is indicated as "unnamed". I am wondering why her name was never identified. If you are wondering what the name is, read the book.
Mothers and daughters.......2004-07-05
Jackie Kennedy Onassis is undisputedly one of the most written about women of our time. Surprisingly, there is very little written about her mother Janet Auchincloss. There is no doubt that Jackie was hugely influenced by Janet. Friends and family often remark on Janet's "demands" on both her daughters. Their dress, schooling, deportment were all noted and remarked upon. Jackie was more openly rebellious than her sister. Her parent's's divorce was difficult for a young girl who adored her father. Janet, no doubt stung by the public humilation, strove to protect her and her daughters' privacy and aura. Jackie was to go through life trying to reconcile those parts of her personality, the adventurous part(her father) and the socially correct side(Janet).
"Janet and Jackie" chronicles a mother/daughter relationship strained by divorce, remarriage, unspoken and unmet expectations, changes in society, wealth and fame. It is a portrait of the huge changes in "society" life. Jan Pottker describes a family of women restrained by society and their inability to communicate. "Janet and Jackie" provides a peek into the life of two fascinating women and the times that helped shape them.
Somewhat Interesting, Not Much New Information.......2004-05-24
This is a somewhat interesting book about Jackie Onassis and her mother, Janet Lee Auchincloss. The first part of the book concentrates on family lineage and heritage. It mentions that Jackie was only 1/8 French, and half Irish. The author states that Jackie's Irish ancestry was hidden by a French name and a love of all things French. Janet was a social climber who denied her Irish heritage and tried to pass herself off as English. The book explores the marriage to Jack Bouvier, which produced two daughters, Jackie and Lee. Drinking, gambling and womanizing on Bouvier's part caused a divorce. Janet later married Hugh Auchincloss, which provided financial security for herself and her children. Although I found Janet's obsession with money and status annoying, she also was there for Jackie. She confronted Jack Kennedy after Jackie lost their baby, and she was there for Jackie after the assassination. The book is an interesting read, although I don't think there is a whole lot of new information in it.

"Marilyn Monroe counted among her closest friends photographer Sam Shaw and poet and author Norman Rosten and their families. Shaw took many photographs of her over the years--not only famous pictures such as the 'skirt-blowing' shot from the filming of The Seven Year Itch but also candid photos of her backstage and playful images of a relaxed Marilyn at leisure. These thirty photographs, all from Shaw and Rosten's book Marilyn Among Friends, offer a uniquely tender and affectionate view of one of the world's most glamorous women. 30 duotone photographs.

Blending insights from linguistic and social theories of speech, ritual and narrative with music-analytic and historical criticism,Britten's Musical Language offers fresh perspectives on the composer's fusion of verbal and musical utterance in opera and song. It provides close interpretative studies of the major scores (including Peter Grimes, Billy Budd, The Turn of the Screw, War Requiem, Curlew River and Death in Venice) and explores Britten's ability to fashion complex and mysterious symbolic dramas from the interplay of texted song and wordless discourse of motives and themes.

Customer Reviews:
Of all my books..........2007-04-30
... this come comes out "tops". I use the information I learned from this book daily as I trade not only futures but also forex. If you are a trader, this one needs to be one of your "top" resources.
Futures Game.......2006-10-30
I am a long time futures investor and I have several books on the subject. This book: "The Futures Game" is superb. It is complete and the only one to consult.
A textbook for beginners.......2001-08-04
This book is an essential a textbook for college students. It provides all the basic materials about the futures market. But I feel it doesn't cover too much about the problems of real world trading. After trading for sometimes, I know that there are many tricks using by the professional traders. They are really important. They can give you edges over other traders. But they are seldom covered in college textbooks. So you still need to read other books or learn from other people before you put the money into this risky game.
Belongs On Every Serious Market Participant's Bookshelf.......1999-05-21
This is clearly one of the best investment books written. The title belies the breadth of valuable market knowledge the book offers students of the markets.
No kidding.......1999-02-07
If you are going to trades futures, read this book, make a few trades, then read this book again. It is a cold, hard look at the reality of trading. While just about every other book on futures trading assumes you are a gullible idiot, this one exposes the difficulty of the pursuit. Its depth and breadth are incomparable.

THE LONG AWAITED SEQUEL TO "THUGS ARE FOR FUN" by J.Gail.
Jacy is getting older. Now at 24, she is starting to re-evaluate her choices in men. She has been dating Popi, a man whose last name she doesn't even know, for nearly half a year. She struggles to break from from this irrational, potentially violent thug, because she knows deep in her heart he ain't no good, and definitely no fun. But he's not trying to hear it. He shows up to her apartment unannounced, stresses her out and shows disrespect to the point where Jacy starts to fear for her safety. The unthinkable happens to Jacy in this chaotic relationship. It's starting to look like she has gotten herself involved with the wrong thug.
He's nothing like Rich Wilkins, her last thug, who maintained a certain level of integrity and respect in his short lived relationship with Jacy. Right now, Rich's anger problem is looking like a breezy Sunday afternoon compared to the problems she is experiencing with Popi.
Is Jacy starting to change her previous outlook on men - does she still believe that THUGS ARE FOR FUN? Or will she be forced to adopt a new credo, that THUGS AIN'T NO FUN AT ALL.
Customer Reviews:
thugs ain't no fun at all by j. gail.......2006-08-18
very good very good, gail keep up the good work.
J. Gail is awesome.......2006-08-14
This sequel was really good, I love how the author put it together and made it happen!
Unable to live by my rules.......2006-01-22
Jacilyn "Jacy" Thomas is still the same. Or is she? Popi isn't abiding by the laws that she usually demands. Although it has only been a few months into this relationship she's realized this situation may be completely out of control.
After seeing Rich, her former enthusiast she wonders what she ever saw in Popi. Rich didn't stop feeling for Jaci he simply didn't have a way to contact her. With the time that has passed can these two find the light at the end of the tunnel?
The Second Part.......2006-01-03
My homegirl gave me these books (thugs are for fun and thugs ain't no fun at all). I didn't think i'd be into them as a man, but they had my attention. Since reading them I even started reading more black books.
Thug Loving.......2005-12-31
J. Gail is back with THUGS AIN'T NO FUN AT ALL, the sequel to Thugs Are For Fun. In this gritty novel the protagonist Jacilyn "Jacy" Thomas is still up to her old tricks, but has had enough. For a few months she has been dating a thug named Popi, and it's sad to say but she doesn't even know his last name. Jacy soon realizes that Popi is not all he's cracked up to be when he takes his transgressions out on her.
When Jacy runs into her former thug lover the suave and debonair Rich Wilkins, she wonders what she ever saw in Popi. With no means of contacting Jacy, because she relocated and changed her number, Rich has been pining over her since their tumultuous break-up. So, after seeing Jacy, Rich makes his intentions of getting her back well known. Will the two discover happiness a second time around? You'll have to read THUGS AIN'T NO FUN AT ALL to find out.
Ms. Gail has written a wonderful novel. The storyline and characterization were so realistic to the point where I didn't want the story to end. Readers will be introduced to a slew of characters who, whether friend or foe, played an integral role in the completion of this story. Although a sequel, THUGS AIN'T NO FUN AT ALL can be enjoyed without reading the previous novel. However, the ending leads me to believe there's more to Jacy and Rich's newfound romance.

First rate........2002-01-28
It's too bad this book is out of print, because I don't know of any other book like it. It's not only a good introductory history of World War II in Europe, but an invaluable battlefield guide. If you're going to take a tour of WWII battlefields in western Europe, buy this book. The driving directions are superb. However, the maps are somewhat sparse and some of the route numbers have changed since the book was published, so you'll need to buy a good road atlas. I gave the book four stars because of the maps and it just covers Britain and Western Europe, but not Italy.
Book Description
In this new book developed from the prestigious Reith Lectures, Nobel Prize—winning author Wole Soyinka, a courageous advocate for human rights around the world, considers fear as the dominant theme in world politics.
Decades ago, the idea of collective fear had a tangible face: the atom bomb. Today our shared anxiety has become far more complex and insidious, arising from tyranny, terrorism, and the invisible power of the “quasi state.” As Wole Soyinka suggests, the climate of fear that has enveloped the world was sparked long before September 11, 2001.
Rather, it can be traced to 1989, when a passenger plane was brought down by terrorists over the Republic of Niger. From Niger to lower Manhattan to Madrid, this invisible threat has erased distinctions between citizens and soldiers; we’re all potential targets now.
In this seminal work, Soyinka explores the implications of this climate of fear: the conflict between power and freedom, the motives behind unthinkable acts of violence, and the meaning of human dignity. Fascinating and disturbing, Climate of Fear is a brilliant and defining work for our age.

In this companion volume to the BBC/PBS television series, Indian biologist Valmik Thapar, a specialist on tigers, takes a leisurely look at the extraordinary animals that inhabit the subcontinent, among them serpent eagles and kiangs, water monitors and one-horned rhinoceroses, cobras and bustards. Although India and the adjoining countries are crowded with humans, and although wildlife-protection laws are a recent development there, animal life continues to thrive; the diversity of flora and fauna, Thapar writes, are the richest in the world. He attributes this uncommon variety of species to religious beliefs that accord the living world an uncommon respect and reverence. Anyone planning a visit to India will benefit from this lively book, as will those who are merely curious.
Book Description
The extraordinarily diverse Indian subcontinent covers a vast area extending from Pakistan in the west to Bangladesh in the east and stretching north to the Himalayan kingdoms of Bhutan and Nepal. Marked by dramatic extremes of climate and terrain, it is home to black bears, snow leopards, elephants, and flying lizards, and it is the only place in the world where both lions and tigers reside.
After a lifetime devoted to the study and conservation of the tiger, Valmik Thapar turns his attention to the plants and animals that share the tiger's domain. How have so many species survived on such a crowded continent, where twenty percent of the world's population exerts intense pressure on the environment? Thapar links the region's tremendous diversity to the reverence shown to nature by Eastern religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. But fifty years after India's independence, modern and urban values are seriously eroding the subcontinent's ecosystems.
Thapar's careful natural history is enriched by his personal anecdotes and musings on spirituality and culture. His own reverence for the wildlife and landscape he encounters and his brilliant photographs make this book an enthralling read, and it is also a moving argument for more vigilant nature conservation on the Indian subcontinent.
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous and highly informative book on Indian and regional wildlife .......2006-06-16
_Land of the Tiger: A Natural History of the Indian Subcontinent_ by Valmik Thapar is a beautiful coffee table type book that I originally bought for its gorgeous full color photos of Indian wildlife and natural landscapes but ended up reading its fairly extensive text (and was glad I did so). Written to accompany a PBS television series (which unfortunately I have not seen), it is a great non-specialist introduction to the wildlife of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, and Bangladesh.
The introduction noted the very rich biodiversity of the subcontinent (2000 fish species, 1200 bird species, and 340 mammal species for instance) and focused on why wildlife has done as well as it has in a region of 1.2 billion people. Despite the growing influx of Western television and consumerism, religion and its respect for many wild animals remains a powerful force, particularly among rural areas and especially among the Hindu population of India and the Buddhist population of Nepal. One particular group, the Jainists, have such a high regard for life that its members are against harming insects and cutting down trees (one Jainist sect, the Bishnoi of the Thar Desert, which Thapar detailed in a later chapter, even celebrate the martyrdom of some if its members years ago in an effort to save a grove of trees). Sacred groves are maintained throughout the subcontinent (which provide vital wildlife habitat), worship of tigers, elephants, monkeys, snakes, and peacocks (which Thapar provided some very interesting details on) have played a large role in their conservation, and many local communities have worked hard to protect local animals from poachers and have tolerated their consumption of some of their crops or livestock so great is their reverence for some species.
The second chapter explored the fauna of the icy mountains and arid plateaus of the Himalayas. The many melt-water fed bogs, marshes, and lakes of the region provide refuge for many migratory species such as the bar-headed goose and other waterfowl, while the region boasts year-round residents like the lammergeyer or bearded vulture, two species of crow-like birds called choughs (both species of which have been observed on the peak of Mount Everest), and several pheasant species such as the chir pheasant and western tragopan. Other animals discussed were Himalayan brown and black bears, yak, black-necked cranes, snow leopards, bharal or blue sheep (favorite prey of snow leopards, taxonomically according to some experts somewhere between sheep and goats), Himalayan ibexes, Himalayan tahr (a mountain goat), musk deer, kiang or Tibetan wild ass, leopards, Tibetan wolves, dholes or Indian wild dogs, Himalayan lynxes, and the tiger (a recent arrival). In the lush forests of the lower, eastern Himalaya one can find many orchid species, satyr tragopans, blood pheasants, red pandas, and the golden langur.
Chapter three was titled "Sacred Waters" and covered life in the great Indian rivers, river valleys, and flood plains. One of the most fertile of these areas is the terai, a 60 kilometer-wide flat marshy strip that stretches 1,600 kilometers across the Gangetic plain in northern India and parts of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, home to tigers, elephants, swamp deer, Indian rhinos, marsh crocodiles or muggers, and many other species. Highlights include coverage of India's seven stork and nine eagle species, the migratory fish known as the mahseer, the black soft-shelled turtle (a sacred species, known only from one location, a shrine in Bangladesh), Gangetic freshwater dolphins, the gharial (a species of crocodilian, the male is distinguished by a growth called a ghara on the tip of its snout, which in Hindi means "earthen pot"), and hog and swamp deer (which cannot graze in areas where the grass grows too high and are dependent upon such animals as elephants, rhinos, and wild buffalo for opening up the terrain).
Chapter four was on the wildlife of the sea, coasts, and nearby islands and focused in particular on sea turtles, flamingos, the interesting Andamanese and Nicobarese island peoples (the latter group believes that their ultimate ancestors were a man and a female dog), sea snakes, dugongs, the megapode (a bird species that uses the heat of decaying vegetation in mounds it creates to incubate its eggs), various monitor species (one of which, the water monitor, is known to lay its eggs in megapode nests), various crab species, and the Bombay duck, a member of the salmon family and a major food fish on India's western coast.
The next chapter examined desert wildlife. Very interesting to me were the black buck (a very fast herbivore that evolved to evade the now locally extinct cheetah, this species has a prominent place in Hindu mythology), the chinkara or Indian gazelle, the caracal (or "gazelle cat," which like the cheetah was once trained to hunt), and the Gir lion.
The following chapter was titled "Wet Forests" and covered the evergreen forests of India, which annually get drenched by the monsoon. A wonderful chapter, this section covered sacred groves called kavu; the shola (patches of montane evergreen forest, interspersed with open grassland, a naturally occurred feature); flying frogs, lizards, and snakes; the fascinating life cycles of the fig wasp and the hornbill; as well as lion-tail macaques, Nilgiri langurs, Malabar giant squirrels, Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri martens (all found in the wet forest of the Western Ghats) and the hoolock gibbon, clouded leopard, golden cat, and binturong (found in the very wet forests of northeastern India).
The final chapter analyzed the life habits of the tiger and its associated fauna, both in the drier, desert-edge environs of Ranthambhore National Park in Rajasthan and the moist bamboo forests of Madhya Pradesh - "Kipling Country," land of the _Jungle Books_. In addition to lots of information on tigers, the author covered sloth bears, gaur or giant ox, the sambar (largest of the Asiatic deer), nilgai or blue cow (India's largest antelope), cobras, peacocks, and elephants.
The epilogue was brief and basically general comments by the author on the troubled future of the region's wildlife.
Beautiful book.......2005-10-05
Very attractive coffee-table edition. Marvelous photos of wildlife and habitats. Engaging text.
A splendid showcase of Indian wildlife.......2003-08-26
I first saw the television series and then moved on to the book. Both the book as well as the series are a very good showcase of the diversity and beauty of indian wildlife ... the book is not about the tiger, unlike what some might mistake ... its truly about the land of the tiger - its forests, its climate, animals, birds, trees, and people.
The photographs are excellent - this is a good overview for both the tourist as well as the enthusiast.
great with amazing photos.......2000-08-10
A great book for anyone who loves the wildlife of the indian subcontinent.
The perfect accompaniment to the video........1999-09-26
This book has some of the best photography I have ever seen. It is an in detail look at the various wildlife of India. From the magnificent tiger to the crocodiles and birds that inhabit the vast natural habitats of this wonderous sub-continent. No one would believe that India was so beautiful. But most of all it takes and in depth look at the one true King of the Asian Jungle- the mighty tiger. And who better to write about them than the tiger guru Valmik Thapar. It is WELL worth the read but get the video first.
