5 out of 5 stars Younger brother makes good.......2005-07-24

I suppose most people would find this an uneventful book, but then those people would not buy it in the first place.
The book gives a very detailed account of cello player Julian Lloyd Webber's professional life both as a live and as a studio performer. It can some times be slightly boring for the not very knowledgeable reader, which is my case. I just enjoy the music and do not care much about other (relevant) details.
However "Married to Music", by Margaret Campbell, has other merits. The reader is given what I believe to be an accurate portrait of Julian at several levels and, once again, I confirm that if talent is not to be wasted it has to go with hard, very hard indeed, work.
Julian is a multidimensional character. He is the researcher always trying to unearth long forgotten musical pieces. He spares no efforts to give his father's music the right place it deserves. He stands for his friends, the controversy surrounding a book and a film on the late Jacqueline du Pré providing a good example. He speaks intelligently on his art and, like the ordinary man he is not, he keenly supports some football team.
I cannot hide my admiration for someone who achieved such a great success playing an instrument like the cello, especially when under the shadow of a talented elder brother, from which he escaped much earlier than some people are ready to admit.
At the end of the day, as in those questions " Which film star (athlete, writer. Politician...) would like to meet (go out with...)?" that appear in some newspapers from time to time, I think Julian is the type of person I would really like to have lunch with.
The first time I heard of Julian Lloyd Webber was in late 1977 or in 1978, in an edition of "The South Bank Show", by Melvyn Bragg, when "Variations" had been or was about to be released. I was living in England at the time and having left soon after I sort of lost touch with him. Now the net has made it possible to resume contact and I am sure his playing will go on delighting me in the future.

The authors select their characters that are not characters, but in fact, human beings with the attributes that people around the world need to know exist(ed). They are real and represent not just themselves, but those they love and that which they treasure; happiness, freedom, love and living!

We all have our strifes and struggles, as do these characters. We don't all achieve fame or fortune, but in the end, if we rest with peace, we have achieved success of a good life.

Congratulations to the authors for yet again choosing their characters with those attributes so rarely found; strength, courage, and purpose.

      Book Description

With the advent of accessible and affordable equipment, the documentary has become more important than ever as a film making genre but it is poorly represented on the cinema book shelves. Imagination, wit, technique, endurance and often courage is required in vast quantities to complete a modern documentary film, and The Documentary Makers brings the reader right inside the heads of the best practitioners working today. In the tried and tested RotoVision tradition of exhaustively researched and extensively illustrated interviews, 20 of the world's leading documentary makers are invited to explain their ideas, their working principles and the pitfalls they have faced when attempting to capture `truth' on camera. Professionals, film students and lovers of cinema alike will flock to this book, which truly brings new insight to a shamefully underfunded and under recognised sector of the film industry. Amongst the interviewees are Ken Burns (US, `Jazz'), Paul Watson (`The Family', UK) Moshen Makhmabaf, Iran); David Attenborough (`The Blue Planet' series, UK) and Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Germany/US).

David Goldsmith, formerly a drama and documentary director, started his career in Canada, came to Britain's independent TV network and was a won a BAFTA Award as director at Britain's ITN. He works and lives in Italy.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Gear For Technomancers.......2003-06-10

The Sons of Ether and the Virtual Adepts are two very interesting Traditions, but the material provided before this book barely touched on the gear they used to battle their former colleagues in the Technocracy. The first edition Technocracy books had a lot of neat gadgets included in them, which really gave players and storytellers a feel for what they do. One can learn a lot about a society by studying their tools. Though the Tradition books written for the Sons of Ether and the Virtual Adepts were entertaining to read, there was little mention of specific gear, thus there was a large hole in their cultural development. The Technomancer's Toybox remedied this problem. This is a no nonsense book about the devices (talismans) of the Virtual Adepts, Sons of Ether, Technocracy, and other technically inclined cliques (mostly Cult of Ecstasy). Split into their own sections and narrated from the viewpoint of a Virtual Adept, level 1 to 5 and unique devices for the groups were presented.

The whole hacker-mage angle of the Virtual Adepts was played up in their section. Most of their devices were centered on computer technology and compact gadgets. There was also an emphasis on being elite, which was expected. Overall, the Virtual Adepts have some nifty gear that would make any reality hacker proud.

The Sons of Ether section was very entertaining. The outlandish gear of the Etherites ranged from silly to deadly. They have many weird gadgets such as rollerblades that can go faster than most cars, death rays, soul-bonding suits, pulp hero lightning guns, and more. This is fantastic and enjoyable chapter.

The Technocracy chapter was unlike the Virtual Adepts or the Sons of Ether. The masters of Reality have gadgets that are often coincidental to the public. Most of the gear presented here were from the New World Order, Iteration X, and the Progenitors. There was a focus on equipment used by field agents on Earth rather than in alternate dimensions. The Void Engineers had a few gadgets detailed in the chapter but the Syndicate normally doesn't make high-tech gear so there was little mention of their devices. The equipment in this chapter was very interesting and further pushes the big conspiracy image of the Union. There were lots of spy equipment, weapons, vehicles, stuff Fox Mulder fears, and others. The gear featured here are very useful. There was an emphasis on usefulness over style.

The chapter that dealt with the other technomancers had gear used by other Traditions, Naphandi, and Marauders. There were some disturbing devices shown here. Even Dreamspeakers use devices and the one presented in this chapter deviated from their norms.

The Technomancer's Toybox is a very good book. Not only does it flesh out two Traditions and three Conventions of the Technocracy beyond their source books, it was also entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars A great source of ideas (for stroytellers).......2000-11-24

This book is a great addition for the storyteller in general. Players may even use it, but you, the master of the world is the one to really explore it. In a few words, this book, and specially the rare artifacts in it, gave me great plot ideas, and not only for a technocratic based chronicle, but all kinds of ways. The weird item section is a great source for dealing with marauders, nephandi and some disconnected mages. Another good thing in the book is that, with it, you can control the "overpowered" kind of player, you know, the one that spends every xp he got on ways of busting .... Put a X-14 A Thunderhead on his face and see what happens... good to shut some mouths... In short, it's a great source book, note the best of them all, but a good one. But be wise to what you give to your players. And a recomendation: never ever let a player got the technocratic exo-skeleton. Believe me, you'll regret it.

5 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS!!.......2000-10-02

4 out of 5 stars A great book, for those who love the Technomancers.......2000-03-26

This book gave me new faith in the enginuity of the Mage: The Ascension rpg. It helped me put my chronical back on track. 3 out of 5 stars Vague on Medical Claims Billing/Transcription, but valuable for starting a business in general........2006-09-08

After much anticipation, I received my Start Your Own Medical Claims and Transcription Business book; however, I was sort of disappointed. The aspects of starting a business was outlined beautifully, but what this book was missing was the information that was stated on the title. There are little references throughout the book that go into some detail about medical claims and transcription, but failed to go into any major detail. The money that I spent was not a total loss, there were some very good points in the book. For the money, it is worth it, but do not think that after reading it that you will be ready to quit your day job and start your own.

5 out of 5 stars On my way to self employment.......2006-02-25

This book was just the thing I needed. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who is considering a business venture of their own. It was so helpful.

It is bulleted for you to be able to do a step by step so that you dont get lost or confused when starting your business. It is informative, uplifting, it motivated me, it gave me the incentive and it gave me the courage to know I could do it.

So far Im moving forward and by summer will be employed for ME! MYSELF! and I!

I have dreamed of being a business owner and yes it is happening. Not all the credit goes to the book because you have to have the will and the desire to go after this and you have to really want it, but the book has taken all of that and made it possible. Im very happy with this purchase and can say that if you are thinking about being your own boss. This will be the best investment you make.

3 out of 5 stars Good outline for billing business.......2005-10-24

This book is a good general outline and business reference for anyone considering starting a business. The book focuses on sound general business information applicable to any business and it's owner. What to do and how to market a business, the tasks and research involved. The old adage of fail to plan - plan to fail, comes to mind. The book also has more information for transcription than claims (I think claims was an afterthought), but it discusses process for medical billing and some resources and references that may prove useful. A good general reference book for a claims biller or transcriptionist. However, this book will not give you the training or experience you will need to bill medical claims confidently.

2 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough.......2005-02-13

As founder and developer of a unique medical transcription company, EchoScribe Inc, I know what it takes to start a transcription company. This book comes short intoo many places. Details are lacking and not for the beginner nor the advanced transcriptionists that wants to start their own company. In fact, come to our website directly to see how we may help you start your own company. Our careers section www.echoscribe.com/careers.asp has many interesting options.

        Book Description

Named as a Christian Science Monitor Best Book of 2002, Ethical Ambition is now available in paperback. As one of America's most influential law professors, Derrick Bell has spent a lifetime helping students struggling to maintain a sense of integrity in the face of an overwhelming pressure to succeed at any price. The result of a meditation on Bell's own achievements, Ethical Ambition is a deeply affecting, uplifting, and thoughtful work that not only challenges us to face some of the most difficult questions that life presents, but also dares to offer solutions.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2005-10-26

Professor Bell shares with us deep personal insight into how people struggle to reconcile their ambition with their ethics. He relates his triumphs, and his failures. Most importantly, he teaches us how to think about how much more we will enjoy our life if we put our ethics first, and then shape our ambitions around those ethics. As a young attorney only 6 years out of law school, I appreciated the life time of wisdom in this book -- it was just what I needed. Highly recommended, but an excellent gift for a law student or young attorney.

4 out of 5 stars sometimes, good things happen to good people.......2005-03-26

i read this book feeling jaded about social justice. i finished the book feeling that many of the frustrations i had were put into words by prof. bell, which was very heartening.
what i appreciate about this book is that it does't make social justice work glamorous and glitzy, getting at the real and often serious sacrifices that people have to make. his decisions were not easy, yet amazingly, good things sometimes happen to good people.
while definitely he is a man who has sacrificed much to the struggle, there were points in the book where i felt the limitations of his standpoint (as a male and as an academic elite) came through. still, i am glad that messages like this exist, as they help people who are also struggling to deal with privilege and systemic change.
i think the key to getting the most out of this book, however, is not to take it as a prescription, but more as thoughts to meditate on as one makes decisions about one's career/life and what "success" really means. some interesting things to think about, especially as a person from a younger generation are: how do we as younger people try to create change after the era of protests, sit-ins, etc. when inequalities are a lot more subtle and more embedded? we can contrast our experiences with prof. bell's, remembering still that we all have to find our own paths.
this book also tackles the issue of faith, which i also appreciated, because so much of the Left today automatically eschews religion, thinking it's a tool of the conservative Right. however, this book therefore might not be for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars A Voice Crying in the Wilderness.......2003-08-13

The stories within these pages makes my so-called ethical struggles pale in comparison but the message is clear. Your ethics will be challenged and upholding an ethical choice will most likely require sacrifices that are necessary if you are to adhere to choices that you can truly live with.
I liken the meaning of this message to "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but suffer the loss of his own soul." I hope and pray that more people will respond ethically if for no other reason than they want to do the right thing; reading this book may help you in that endeavor. God Speed!

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for this fine book.......2003-05-07

Although I know of the author, I didn't read any of his works until this one. This one grabbed me because it explored the various things people do in exchange of comfort, personal freedom. Mr Bell pointed out that his mother went to the landlord with the rent money, and told them that if they wanted to see the money, they better fix the steps to their home which was in disrepair. The steps were fixed.Another example told of Bell in the early 60s, after suffering indignities on a trip to Mississippi, unwittingly went into a phone booth in the white section, and got pulled out of the booth by two police officers. But he feels that giving up something on the matter of principle, bought the greatest rewards in the end. And it is something that he(the author) experienced himself. Thought provoking and enlightening.

        5 out of 5 stars A Key for Success.......2003-02-12

Professor Bell deserves kudos on his latest book,Ethical Ambition. I completed his book several weeeks ago and found it to be food for the soul and mind.
I particularly enjoyed the life and faith lessons that can be learned from this book. Professor Bell's examples of making ethically moral choices even when they are unpopular were extraordinary. The several examples where he resigned due to his employer's lack of inclusiveness, or where he was denied his constitutional right to free association were memorable.
Also, most noteworthy are the examples of the Israeli soldiers that risked court martial for the rights of other people; and the college dean that questioned why the college athletes were allowed to graduate with minimal skills while tutors and professors pass them along. Each one of his examples of human courage made me reflect and feel warm and peaceful inside.
By reading this book, I, too, became reflective and tried to envision how this book had meaning in my life. I remembered the circumstance when I refused to join an organization because I was told not all races were included. I refused to join because the price to my morals and any notion that I have to right and wrong would have been irreparable.

I think one of the main lessons to remember from this book is that we are all here together. We can not live our lives in a vacuum. We must make ethical life choices for the betterment of the human race.

God bless Professor Bell and us too because we are able to read his writing that enrich our lives. Professor Bell is a wonderful person and exquisite writer with vision. I thoroughly enjoyed his thoughtful, knowledgeable and humanistic views of our life experiences. By reading this book, I can truly say I know the value of using ethics and morals to attain a successful relationship and career. This book is a great American story of perserverance, hard work and strong moral fiber that is the fabric of this great country we call America.

2 out of 5 stars Not Accurate History.......2007-03-26

At first I liked this book until I realized that a lot of things the author say happened, just did not happen. And a lot of things he says some of the Generals said, they didnt say them. One of the most telling is when Lewis Armistead was wounded after going over the stone wall in Pickets Charge, The Author says that Armistead said to a union soldier to take his personal belongings and see that his wife got them. Since Armistead was a widower and had been since his last wife died in 1855, I doubt very seriously that he said this. Also the Author says that Armistead is told then that he was morally wounded and would die. But according to history when Armistead died a few days later the Union surgeon was surprised because his wounds were not life threatning.
This is just a small amount of the inaccuracies in this book. There are many more. I know this book was written some years back, but I like to read a book that has been researched and know that some truth lies in the pages. I have read many books on Gettysburg, (not that Im an expert,) but I do know the difference between historical research and a writer making up events that did not happen.

              5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!.......2002-02-17

An excellent, blockbuster of a book. There is more history crammed into its 246 pages than I ever imagined could be accomplished in so short a span. Well written, fast moving and riveting, the author examines The Battle of Gettysburg from the participants' view: military and civilian, high and low ranking, male and female, Union and Confederate. Extreamly well done.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, readable overview of the Battle of Gettysburg.......1998-01-21

What a great way to get an overview of the Battle of Gettysburg. No dry, humourless tome, this one. Rather, a very readable book that looks more at the views of the common soldiers than the moves and countermoves of the generals. The format of following many different participants and viewers of the battle (all real-life) makes for a story that reads more like a thriller. How accurate it is, I cannot say, not being an expert on the battle. However, I do note that Persico does not have what is now accepted as the true story behind the very famous photo of the dead sharpshooter at Devil's Den (it is now believed that the photographer moved and arranged the body to set up the photo). He instead believes the photographer's story that that was how he found the body. Overall, I found this an enjoyable read, and I found it easily put into place for me (for the first time in any Civil war book I have read) all the intracacies of that conflict. Just a note: I only became interested in this battle as a result of receiving the new computer game "Sid Meier's Gettysburg!" as a gift recently ... I would also thoroughly recommend that game! Especially if it leads players to want to research more about the battle and times it portrays!

The thesis of this original and provocative book is that representative government should be understood as a combination of democratic and undemocratic elements. Challenging the conventionally held views on the subject, Professor Manin reminds us that while today representative institutions and democracy appear as virtually indistinguishable, when representative government was first established in Europe and America, it was designed in opposition to democracy proper. The author identifies the essential features of democratic institutions and reviews the history of their application.

                            Book Description

It is usually held that representative government is not strictly democratic, since it does not allow the people themselves to directly make decisions. But here, taking as her guide Thomas Paine’s subversive view that “Athens, by representation, would have surpassed her own democracy,” Nadia Urbinati challenges this accepted wisdom, arguing that political representation deserves to be regarded as a fully legitimate mode of democratic decision-making—and not just a pragmatic second choice when direct democracy is not possible.

As Urbinati shows, the idea that representation is incompatible with democracy stems from our modern concept of sovereignty, which identifies politics with a decision-maker’s direct physical presence and the immediate act of the will. She goes on to contend that a democratic theory of representation can and should go beyond these identifications. Political representation, she demonstrates, is ultimately grounded in a continuum of influence and power created by political judgment, as well as the way presence through ideas and speech links society with representative institutions. Deftly integrating the ideas of such thinkers as Rousseau, Kant, Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès, Paine, and the Marquis de Condorcet with her own, Urbinati constructs an alternative vision of representative government that is sure to generate admiration and discussion among political philosophers and students.

                              Book Description

A country's electoral system has a profound effect on its politics; its citizens ought therefore to ask themselves at frequent intervals whether that currently in force is satisfactory. This book does not argue for a particular answer, but aims to help people think about the question. Few realize how much thought it needs. One should not begin by asking whether this or that system is better, but by trying to make precise what we want an electoral system to do. A general election has two effects: it decides the composition of Parliament; and it decides who is going to represent each constituency. The question of what we want an electoral system to do therefore splits in two: how should Parliament be divided between the parties, given the voter's preferences? and which are the most representative local candidates, given the voter's preferences? Neither question is straightforward, but this timely new book helps to explain on what basis we should decide which electoral system we should have.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but hardly as impartial as the author claims.......2006-12-17

The author of this book says, not once but repeatedly, that this is not a book recommending a voting system, but rather to help one decide what sort of voting system to adopt. Too bad that this is not really so. The author is clearly skeptical of the claims put forth by advocates of the Single Transferable Vote, but his comments go well beyond skepticism to the level of condemnation. He does recognize one good thing about STV, that it protects minorities, but there are whole chapters devoted to knocking down STV (including one called "How to do better than STV"!) Meanwhile, he minimizes or omits the arguments adduced by those pointing out the problems in other systems, such as the Borda Count, which has some major flaws, but only a paragraph in the whole book to address these flaws.

I would say that there is much that is useful in this book, though it has to be read with the knowledge that Dummett simply does not like STV. A couple of years ago, I reviewed "Electoral Systems: A Comparative Introduction," by David M. Farrell. This would certainly be a better book to learn about voting systems with a more impartial approach, and I would advise readers to look at Farrell's book in preference to this one, though if you allow for its biases, this is not a bad book.
