Book Description
Petty, Earnhardt, Allison, Baker, Jarrett: The names read like a starting grid of NASCAR's rich history. From its early dirt-track days to the swift speedway battles of the present, NASCAR has continued a tradition of excellence and competition passed down from father to son, and from older brother to younger. The desire of adoring kids to follow the path to family success--all to the delight of fans across America--remains at the core of NASCAR Winston Cup Series action and forms the thrilling landscape of NASCAR Generations. The Legacy of Family in NASCAR Racing.
Told through the eyes of the successful fathers, sons, and brothers who have made up the fraternity of racing during NASCAR's fifty-plus years, NASCAR Generations celebrates the winningest personal and professional moments, as well as the most poignant ones, experienced by the sport's beloved families.
There's Dale Earnhardt reflecting on the only race he ran with his dad, Ralph, a dirt-track legend, and the joys of embracing Dale Jr. in victory lane. Two-time series champion turned announcer Ned Jarrett happily admits that no moment in his storied career could ever rival the opportunity to make the spirited call for his son Dale's first Daytona 500 win and to follow Dale's quest for the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship. Stock car legend Bobby Allison speaks candidly about the glory days of racing against his brother and Alabama Gang partner, Donnie, as well as the honor of driving door to door with "the finest young man in racing," his son, Davey. Each of NASCAR's greatest family stars has a rich history to share, and each tells it here in NASCAR Generations.
Here also are the competitive siblings who somehow manage to keep the family peace at close to two hundred miles per hour every weekend. In 1999, Jeff and Ward Burton forged the sport's most curious one-two punch, finishing in that order for three races (much to Ward's chagrin). Bill Elliott and his brother Dan look back to the incredible effort they and their brother Ernie put into Bill's pressure-filled, unlikely drive for the first-ever Winston Million in 1985. And then there's the 1996 finale in Atlanta, when Bobby Labonte won the race and big brother Terry won the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship, leading to a shared victory lap for the ages.
In interviews with many members of the NASCAR fraternity, longtime magazine journalist Robert Edelstein gets to the heart of NASCAR's family matters, especially in recounting the sport's two longest-running story lines. For the France family, who started the sport, the qualities that made Big Bill France and his wife, Anne, such a successful team inspired their sons, Bill Jr. (who continues at NASCAR's helm) and Jim, as well as the next generation of France family members, to help shape NASCAR in the new millennium. And for the Pettys, the only family in professional sports that has fielded four generations of competitors, there will forever be the glory of their accomplishmentshighlighted by King Richard's two hundred victories.
NASCAR Generations is the perfect book for any fan who has cheered on the sport's fastest fathers or favorite sons--or both.

The First NASCAR Book I Purchased.......2006-05-06
Two years ago when I started following the motor sport NASCAR, I purchased this book to give me the history and background that i needed to be able to understand the roots and expansion of what we now see on modern racetracks.
It was reading about the France family that I learned the deep roots about the evolution from beach racing to the building of the Daytona track.
I highly recommend this book as one to own and to read to enlighten you about the sport of racing stock cars if you go to races. As a woman, I must tell you girls to read this to learn why it is so popular with men.
Fast Families.......2000-09-27
This is without a doubt one of the most completely compelling books about auto racing that I have ever read. The author manages to expertly blend the human side of families in the racing world, with the excitement of the sport. The book reads so smoothly, I keep thinking I saw a movie. If you're into the NASCAR scene, you must read this book.

More or less, "the" Hollywood Bible.......2005-07-16
I was riveted from the first page until the very last few pages that were left blank for "notes."
This is the de-facto Hollywood "it" guide listing anyone that has ever been a remote fringe player with one very minor film credit to Brian "Any-Other-Good-Books-For-Me-Graydon" Grazer of Imagine Entertainment.
I must confess, I often wonderered how half these people pay their rent on a monthly basis when you look at their credits.
If you're a writer, actor, director, cinematographer, producer, editor, essentially any hollywood job that ends with an "r" then you'll want to buy a copy of this book to to know whom to avoid.

Never played and still enjoyed........2004-12-03
The Discworld RPG is a great read even if you don't play GURPS. It's not bad even if you hate RPGs. The book is bursting with source material and backgrounds - it's not uncommon for personality descriptions to take a full column. If you're a gamer, it's nice to have the actual writeups. If you're not a gamer, the art and small storylines through the book are still entertaining. Of particular interest to me was the magic section - not so much for how it's used in the game but for the Disc's philosophy of how it works. Also, without this book, I never would have known that all native-born Ankh-Morporkians are born with Disease Resistance. And a shiv...

Follow the path to success.......2004-06-21
I have a single quibble with this outstanding book, and that is the title, "CIO Survival Guide", implies a reactive approach, while the book is totally focused on a proactive approach that will assure the success of any CIO who follows Schubert's excellent advice.
From the first pages, where the new CIO is given ten key questions to ask the CEO to establish his of her role with clarity, to the steps to build a functioning IT organization that is aligned to business imperatives, this book is on target every step of the way.
In a nutshell, Schubert leads you through relationship building, how to lead as well as manage, prioritization and resource management, and strategy formulation and decision making. These are critical success factors for any CxO position, but are too often lacking in CIOs. By following the advice on gaining a focus and unifying business and technology competencies you'll establish yourself as a valued member of the CxO team. More importantly, the advice provided in Chapter 4, Connecting IT to Value Creation, is not only the true key to success, but is the key to proving the value of IT to business - this is the one area where most CIOs and their IT organizations fall short, yet Schubert manages to distill all you need to know in a single chapter.
This is the best book I've read on the roles and responsibilities of a CIO. Too many books on this subject are more about small-to-medium businesses and focus too much on managing technology instead of managing to shareholder value and business operation support. I strongly recommend this book as a primary reference, and also recommend "CIO Wisdom: Best Practices from Silicon Valley" (ISBN 0131411152), which is a collection of articles by successful CIOs that nicely augment this book.
Book Description
Bill Veeck was an inspired team builder, a consummate showman, and one of the greatest baseball men ever involved in the game. His classic autobiography, written with the talented sportswriter Ed Linn, is an uproarious book packed with information about the history of baseball and tales of players and owners, including some of the most entertaining stories in all of sports literature.
Customer Reviews:
A great gift.......2007-07-03
I gave this book to my brother who is a baseball nut and he loved it. He couldn't wait to get off work so he could sit in the subway and read it all the way home.
He is a historian and found it accurate and a page turner.
A Baseball Storyteller.......2006-07-10
My thanks goes out to Bill Veeck for being one of the men that saved baseball on the South Side of Chicago. Even though it is not all included in his autobiography, he worked to keep the White Sox in Chicago multiple times. This is one of the reasons many people closely associate Veeck with the White Sox.
On page 352, Veeck writes, "To the White Sox rooter, there is nothing casual about baseball. Wake him up in the middle of the night, ask him who he is and he will say, 'I am a carpenter and a White Sox fan.' He may or may not have inherited his trade from his father, but chances are that he inherited his rooting interest in the Sox. This kind of family solidarity can only come out of adversity and trial by fire." This is the blue collar attitude he brought to baseball ownership. He was also an entertainer and promoter the likes of which baseball will never see again.
"Veeck as in Wreck" is a wildly entertaining ride. While Veeck occasionally gets bogged down in mathematics and finances, his baseball stories compensate. The midget that Veeck sent to bat in St. Louis is discussed. The wild promotions that attracted record crowds are included, though he could not possibly include them all. The book only omits his second tenure in Chicago which included the dubious Disco Demolition Night. Veeck started in the early 1900's when his father owned the Cubs. While his heart may have been with the Cubs, his best work came with the White Sox.
Including his riffs with the owners who included current commissioner Bud Selig, Veeck was a fan's owner. Although long, this is a great read for baseball fans. White Sox fans should find it extra sweet.
Should be required reading for baseball fans.......2006-03-30
I must preface this by saying that I read this book after it was reccomended to me by the sports editor of a local paper.
This book, and Veeck's life, are nothing short of amazing. In these times of high ticket prices and salaries, it is fasciniating to read about how Veeck bought and sold major league franchises, sometimes with little to no capital or cash to start with.
Veeck is also the pioneer of the idea of going to a baseball game and being entertained. He came up with some of the wackiest and funniest promotions and ideas ever and they are all contained in this book. On top of that, he was a genuinely funny guy, which also comes across throughout the course of the book.
Every baseball fan should read this book to realize exactly how much Veeck shaped the experience of going to a baseball game like we know it today.
They broke the mold.......2005-08-20
They just don't make baseball owners like Bill Veeck anymore, and it is our loss. Maverick, visionary, and showman extraordinaire; Bill had a ball setting baseball's staid establishment on its ear with his unorthodox tactics, mischievous spirit, and wild promotions. He was an every-man who never lost the common touch, and believed that to be the secret of his success. His promotions and gimmicks bedeviled and enraged his fellow owners and the purists within the mort bound baseball establishment while they delighted the fans who Bill had a knack for attracting anywhere he went.
In this fascinating, fun, romp of an autobiography, Veeck showed that his knack for telling stories was as well honed as his knack for whacky promotions. Working with the outstanding Ed Linn (who also co-wrote Leo Duroucher's autobiography `Nice Guys Finish Last') Veeck served up his life's tale one entertaining story after another. Whether writing about sending a midget to pinch hit in a ball game, planting the ivy in Wrigley Field as a young man, creating the first exploding scoreboard, creatively financing and finagling ownership deals, or feuding with fellow owners, Veeck's stories are hits, every one.
If you love baseball, mavericks, or showmen, you can't go wrong with this one - highly recommended.

Fun and Entertaining .......2005-03-16
This is a fun autobiography by one of baseball's biggest showmen. Bill Veeck (1914-1986) was an innovative baseball owner who bucked the establishment, disdained stuffed shirts, and was full of ideas and enthusiasm. Here he tells his story, from a Chicago boyhood (his father ran the Cubs), to ownership of the then minor-league Milwaukee Brewers in the early 1940's. From there he describes running the Cleveland Indians (including their 1948 championship), the old St. Louis Browns and the Chicago White Sox (a team he owned twice). Readers get a sense of the baseball controversies that existed a few decades ago, and see what it was like to run a sports franchise in the days before free agency drove up player salaries. Veeck had his faults, but he loved baseball, disdained arrogance, opposed racism, and strived to give his fans their money's worth. Among his innovations are exploding scoreboards, player names on the uniforms, fireworks, and of course, sending a midget up to bat (he walked on four pitches).
VEECK AS IN WRECK is a bit dated since it was first published in the early 1960's, but Veeck's enthusiasm and collaborator Ed Linn's prose makes for a fun and entertaining read.

Book Description
Until now, the story of the Battle of Hong Kong has defied a coherent retelling. Over a third of its defenders were killed in battle or died in captivity; those who survived seldom spoke about their experiences; and written accounts recorded while in combat were largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation. The only primary historical material that remains was written from memory in POW camps, or years after the fact.
This book represents the first attempt to piece together all existing accounts of the December 1941 fighting between the Garrison and the invading Japanese. Banham makes use of the Garrison's small size -- only 14,000 soldiers -- to weave a historical account from the perspectives of individuals, rather than big battalions. His story covers the fighting phase by phase, and considers the individual actions that made up the battle, the military strategies, and the many controversies that arose both during the struggle and after.
Military historians interested in the Hong Kong battle, and the role of Canadian and British forces in the combat, will welcome this original and comprehensive account.

Tragedy documented.......2007-03-15
As a long time resident of Hong Kong, this book has given detail and colour to a chapter in the short history of the of the most fascinating cities in the world. I could not put this down - it is in some ways dry and full of incredible detail, but also very compelling in narrative. Other reviewers here seem to have taken a strong negative view of the amount of detail - but that is what makes this book so effective.
I am lucky enough to be able to put the book down and walk to places like Wong Nai Chung Gap from my front door in 15 minutes - and indeed I now feel I understand the place so much more. Thanks Tony for an excellent effort. I hope to see you strolling along Bowen Road again soon.
Not the Slightest Chance: The Defence of Hong Kong, 1941.......2004-08-18
An exceptional read and a well-researched piece of history, Tony Banham's Not the Slightest Chance: The Defence of Hong Kong, 1941 deserves a place in the library of anyone interested in military history.
As a professional historian, I read dozens of WWII-related works every year and unfortunately, many of them deserve little, if any, attention. This is one book, however, that held my interest from beginning to end! Banham has the rare ability to provide the reader with a fast-paced narrative and a "you are there" glimpse into the history of this important battle.
An Historic Masterpiece.......2004-08-18
History is not always, as rank novices think, a clever story of related events but should be an in depth study of how an event unfolded. Tony Banham, unlike his angry critic, fully documented what happened to every unit and every man at all times during the invasion and capture of Hong Kong. With the truth now in hand, others can make valid judgements and place the battle in historical perspective.
Banham's narrative brings the reader into the tense and horrid battles that shocked the world. This will become the definitive book that all scholars, generations from now, will seek when they want to know what really happened. It is an historic masterpiece that belongs in the hands of any serious scholar of World War II. We accord to this book the highest praise possible. It is a bargain at almost any price.

Not the Slightest Chance.......2004-08-18
This is a much needed book on the real history of Hong Kong and the invasion of the Japanese. Tony Banhan did a fantastic job. As a child of a British Officer I was born and grew up in Hong Kong. I never knew what happened to many of my childhood friends' fathers but, I now know thanks to Tony. I was interned along with eleven hundred women and children at Rosary Hill. Many of us that are still living today are so grateful to Tony for giving us the answers that we all needed. This is a great book, it details the exact events that took place hour by hour. Recently while researching information at Nara in D.C., in reference to WW II, I came to appreciate the enourmous work that went into Tony's book. Well done Tony and a big THANK YOU from those of us that lived through it.
Keep away you that can!.......2004-07-31
One of the worst history books I ever read. Really it is not a book, but a laundry list. If you want to know who died at X hour the Y day or when airfield A has been strafed this is your book. If you want to understand the battle for Hong Kong this is not.
If you have not time to loose keep away; if you have time to loose it is better to find another way to loose it!

Book Description
Writing with fierce honesty, Jennifer Miller has created an extraordinary synthesis of history, reportage, and coming-of-age memoir in Inheriting the Holy Land. Her groundbreaking perspective on the conflict is presented through interviews with young Israelis and Palestinians and conversations with some of the most influential officials involved in the Middle East, including Shimon Peres, Yasir Arafat, James Baker, Benjamin Netanyahu, Colin Powell, Ehud Barak, and Mahmoud Abbas. This book will open eyes, open hearts, and open minds.
Miller grew up in an affluent suburb of Washington, D.C., surrounded by the chaotic politics of the Middle East. Her father was a U.S. State Department negotiator at the Oslo and Camp David peace summits, and dinnertime conversation in the Miller household often included discussions of the Middle Eastern conflict. When Miller joined Seeds of Peace, a program that brings Middle Eastern kids to Maine for intensive sessions of conflict resolution, her real experience with the Middle East began. As she befriended young Palestinians, Israelis, Egyptians, and Jordanians, Jennifer came to realize that their views were missing from the ongoing debate over the Holy Land. By helping these young voices be heard, she knew she could reveal something vitally new and deeply challenging about the future of this torn region.
Miller, however, learned fast that it was one thing to hang out at the idyllic Seeds for Peace camp in Maine and quite another to confront young people on their own turf–in the alleys of East Jerusalem, behind the armed gates of West Bank settlements, in the teeming refugee camps of Gaza. Friendships that had blossomed in the United States withered in the aftermath of yet another suicide bombing. Big-hearted teens on both sides of the conflict shocked Miller with the ferocity of their illusions and the twisted logic of their misconceptions. But she also found rays of hope in places where others had reported only despair–surprising open-mindedness among the ultra-religious, common ground shared by those who had lost loved ones to the violence, a yearning for peace amid the rubble of refugee camps and the shards of bombed cities.
A deft writer, she interweaves her startlingly candid interviews with the vibrant realities of life in the streets. Just as Jennifer Miller was forced to confront her biases as an American, a Jew, a woman, and a journalist, in Inheriting the Holy Land, she similarly challenges readers to reexamine their own cherished prejudices and assumptions.

Factually Incorrect, Non-Objective, and Simplistic.......2006-07-08
The book was full of factual inaccuracies, as well as non-objective opinions that cannot be supported by fact. It began in the introduction, where Miller states that a certain movie that portrays Islam in a negative light "has more to do with Islam's view of women." In fact, if Miller were familiar with Islam, she would realize that sexism within Islamic societies has nothing to do with Islam's view of women, and everything to do with traditional male interpretation of a religion that is not in any way biased against women. Another blatant misfact is on pg. 167, where Miller states that because the Hamas charter states that '"The Koran is its constitution....Jihad is its path...'", then Hamas "will employ violent methods of Jihad...to create an Islamic state in all of historic Palestine." In fact, Hamas has publicly stated multiple times that it does not wish to create an Islamic state, but a state that allows the free worship of all religions - the Koran guides the path of Hamas members, but not that of all Palestinians, much the same way that the Bible may guide the US President's decisions, but not the decisions of all his constituents. Furthermore, the "greatest" jihad is translated as a struggle within one's self - it does not necessarily translate as the violence that Miller states as fact that Hamas will employ. In yet another example, on pg. 186, Miller states that a Gazan explaining an idea about Zionists paying off American congressmen is a conspiracy theory that is blatantly false; however, yet again, if she looked up the facts, a number of Zionist groups do in fact pay large sums of money to congressmen in order to ensure support of Israel. This theme of presenting an opinion without any factual support continues throughout the book.
The one redeeming quality about the book is that it does provide a fairly thorough image of the opinions of Israeli youth and the way they think.
Replete with factual inconsistencies- .......2005-12-19
Jennifer Miller writes that Palestinian history goes back 400 years. Really? Can Ms. Miller give us the name of a Palestinian leader who lived in the 1800s or any other vestige of pre-1940s Palestinian identity or nationhood for that matter? She would be the first. Understandably the Palestinians have become a people in the last century and deserve a state of their own, but leave it to a Jew to give the Palestinians the historical legitimacy they do not rightfully own.
Ms. Miller begins the book by giving us "a word about Palestine." She mentions that Roman Emperor Hadrian "adopted" the term "Palestine." What a distorted way of saying that the Romans wanted to wipe out the memory of the Jews, who had fought for many centuries against their human-worshipping oppressors with such determined conviction, much as the Romans tried to wipe out the memory of ancient Carthage in centuries before. She mentions that Muslims have biblical rights to Israel. You mean the fact that Mohammedian armies conquered the territory in centuries past and later built a mosque on top the remains of the Jewish Temple? I guess that means that Muslims have biblical rights to Spain as well.
And here's a last point I'd like to make. In the 1950s and 60s, the French killed over a million Algerians in that country's war of independence and the Chinese usurped the proud Tibetans to the tune of an estimated million dead. We Americans carpet-bombed our way to a million Vietnamese civilian deaths during the Vietnam War. While far from perfect, if Israel handled its enemies the way others in the world do, we wouldn't have a conflict to talk of and the Miller's would be out of work.
Informative & Interesting! .......2005-11-29
Inheriting the Holy Land is a novel that inspires one to really uncover what is commonly overlooked: the young people in the world today. Jennifer Miller, age 24, sheds light on the young adults trying to work their way towards reconciliation of long conceived judgments and hostilities, yet finding many obstacles along the way. Miller, a graduate of the International Seeds of Peace camp, traces her way back to other campers presently living in Israel, whether they be Israelis, Arabs, or even Israeli-Arabs. Regardless of their background, she acts as the mediator, trying to bring a hope for peace to the people that will be shaping the future conflicts and agreements. Overall, Miller provides a great deal of historical information to back up her story and gives us hope for a peaceful future for the Middle East and its people.
Excellent, engaging, powerful........2005-10-12
Inheriting the Holy Land by Jennifer Miller is simply an amazing story and synthesis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on her experience with Camp Seeds of Peace, relationships with young people from a wide variety of viewpoints, and interviews with regional leaders young and old. It also illustrates how important a sense of identity is to people who must make peace. How does the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in an oil-less part of the Middle-east, and involving only a couple million people, attract so much attention and passion worldwide? Besides the ramifications of this conflict across the muslim world, I believe there is something more. If Israelis and Palestinians can resolve their problems and achieve peace, it would give such hope that larger societies in the world might also be able to resolve other conflicts across cultural and ethnic divides now and in the future. Miller's perspective and analysis is not available in the daily and brief newspaper reports on this conflict. Although I have read a few other books on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I now feel much more educated and updated than before having read Miller's balanced, critical and brilliant book.
Enlightening and impossible to put down.......2005-10-07
No matter what the reader's age or background, Miller is able to reach a wide audience with her balanced and incredibly wise outlook on this issue. She has commited so much of her life to understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that her knowledge base and understanding are way beyond her years. I have recommended this book to young adults and older individuals; some barely knew where the Gaza Strip was while others had a deep-seated interest in this issue. All of them, however, have found this book refreshingly insightful and captivating.
