5 out of 5 stars Putting it all together!.......2002-04-20

Faith Cook has done an incredible job on Selina, the Countess of Huntingdon, and weaving the characters of the 18th C revival into an understandable history. In doing so, she has not only allowed the realism of each character to be displayed (graces & faults!) but has provided the reader with a real exciting read! In presenting the life of the Countess she has provided a tremendous story of inspiration as we see that even one who experienced deep hardships, was on fire for the gospel, and undivided in her zeal to see men and women come to know Christ through the preaching of his Word. I recommend it highly!!

5 out of 5 stars TROY AIKMAN IS YOUR GOD!.......2006-07-29

HEY HEY HEY HEY BUY THIS RIGHT NOW I HAVEN'T EVEN READ IT YET IT'S MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER AND IT'S THE BEST BOOK EVER AS WELL NOTHING CAN COMPARE TO BIG 8 HE'S THE BEST QUARTERBACK EVER AND IF YOU DENY IT IT'S JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE JEALOUS GO AIKMAN!

5 out of 5 stars A Great book About a Great Man.......2000-02-02

This book is what Troy Aikman is about he lets the reader into his personal life a little bit.You see the person Troy first than the football player. After you read this book you become a bigger fan of his than befor and if you were not a fan than you become one. The pictures are great as well as the text. I really enjoyed it and I know you will too. Must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Good book with a lot of info and pictures.......1999-11-24

Great book that really tells the whole story. Although you can find most of this info. in other scattered places, it's all nicely put into this book. There are many INCREDIBLE photos of Troy, so if you're a fan, or just think he's gorgeous (or both), this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of a Champion.......1999-10-26

Troy Aikman really draws the reader to him. His gracefully written book truely defines the Aikman as the true champion that he is. He is a man who overcame a lot of odds to reach the success he now has achieved. His story gives everyone reassurance that hardwork will bring success.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......1999-09-26

I really didn't find any new information that I hadn't read before about Troy. It lacked something of value and certainly not worth the money unless you are really a huge Troy Aikman fan. The book went immediatly in my garage sale and of course I had to continue marking down the price to get it bought. 2.00.

Pictures were also boring and seemed to be written by a 10 year old.

    Book Description

Previous biographical emphasis on Nanook has not only obscured Flaherty's early career but also neglected the critical contributions Frances made to his development as an artist. Robert and Frances Flaherty charts her transformation from a Bryn Mawr bluestocking to the partner of a frontier explorer and offers her unique perspective as his collaborator and publicist. From iron prospector to photographer to filmmaker, Flaherty's early life is situated in the context of his explorations of the Canadian north and its peoples, the development of modern cinema, the rise of modernism, and his association with significant figures such as Alfred Adler, Franz Boas, Edward Curtis, and Alfred Steiglitz.

      Book Description

This book provides an in-depth study of the late medieval chanson, from Gace Brulé through Guillaume Du Fay. It is largely concerned with interpretation of the way accidentals function, not only at the level of local detail but also as part of the overall design, and explores the way inflections are used by the composer as an expressive tool. Support for this approach comes from reference to causa pulchritudinis ("by reason of beauty"), a justification for chromatic writing first encountered at the beginning of the fourteenth century.

        4 out of 5 stars Nice package.......2003-08-24

I love the character creation portion of this CD-ROM. It lets you roll your base stats as many times as you want to sit there. Thus you don't have to settle for that character with a 3 str if you don't want to, but then again some of us are up for the challenge.

The library of books is the right collection of all the necessary core books that an adventureres would need.

The map generator is ok. I wanted something more but this functions for most new adventures. The tool(s) are better for creating wilderness adventures and take a lot more patience when trying to create a town or city. I actually used it to help me run a Palladium:Rifts adventure...a town or wilderness is a town or wilderness. The map is a functional tool.

For those that don't want to bother with 3rd edition and get back to some using 2nd edition, this CD-ROM has all the necessary materials. It is especially useful if you have a laptop because you can bring the laptop to the gaming session vs. have to lug 12+ books with you. Much lighter. :)

I would check on ebay for the best deals on this software. But it is worth getting if just to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tool Package For Serious AD&D Players And DMs.......2000-10-21

AD&D Core Rules 2.0 on CD-ROM is a great tool package for serious AD&D enthusiasts, players and DMs alike. The high quality of this new release is a great relief after the poor showing of the first version.

Program tools include complete text of nine key rule books, a character generator, improved dungeon, city and wilderness mapmakers, dice roller software, and a DM's toolkit with programs for automatically generating encounters, treasure troves, spells, NPCs, and more.

Mapping is provided through two different programs, the Map Maker and the Campaign Mapper. The former quickly creates City, Dungeon, and Overland maps, with neatly detailed symbols and some randomized variety in repetitive, placed features such as trees, houses, and mountains. The Campaign Mapper is much more complex, and will be very familiar to users of ProFantasy's Campaign Cartographer. In this program, maps are built in multiple layers and encounter data can be linked to the maps. Grids toggle on and off in either program; printing is available in both black-and-white and color. Both programs are miles beyond the original Core Rules map generator and an invaluable aid to the DM tired-to-death of graph paper and smudges.

The highly-detailed character generator can be set for either Core or "Player's Option" rules, and quickly creates fully-equipped PCs and any level of NPCs complete with spells, skills, and, if desired, random names (some strange but interesting results, a feature probably of more use to the DM). Twelve methods of characteristic generation are provided, from straight "you're-stuck-with-these-stats" to the manual entry of numbers. An optional "city" interface provides "buildings" to visit for creating all of the character's various skills and items.

Nine on-line books are included: Monstrous Manual, Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master Guide, Arms & Equipment Guide, Tome of Magic, Dungeon Master Option: High Level Campaigns, and the three Player's Option books: Combat & Tactics, Skills & Powers, and Spells & Magic. No pictures, all text, but quite a treasure trove for the price of the program, considering the price of acquiring physical copies of all of the books.

Encounters and monsters (lair and wandering), treasures, and NPCs are quickly set up by the DM toolkit. The installed database is customizable for house rules, letting DMs add their own monsters, character races, equipment, skills/proficiencies, magic items, racial abilities, powers, and spells, a flexibility sorely lacking in the previous version.

The value of this CD-ROM for the DM is enormous. Several of the various areas of the program can be run simultaneously, a great convenience for writing an adventure (the cyber equivalent of spreading out your books). For a pressing game deadline, reference sheets can be quickly printed, fast dice "rolled," and NPCs and encounters swiftly generated, with the creation of maps probably taking the most time. With all this, all the DM needs is a good idea!

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Included in Core Rules.......2000-08-10

I don't give this three stars because it's a particularly bad product. I give it three stars because I should not have had to buy it. What this product gives you is the ability to create characters with the complete handbook kits. It also supplies the handbooks in computerized form. However, the complete handbook and its kits should have been included in the core rules! Just another example of me getting bent over by TSR\WotC, of well. I won't let their greed stop me from having fun. If you do use kits get this product; creating the kits on your own with the core rules is a nightmare. Also get it if you don't have the complete handbooks (I already had them all) that is if you don't mind viewing them on the computer with no pictures.

Another note: Specialty Priests are not included, but this is not a surprise. The core rules\expansion is designed for generic 2nd ed AD&D and to make specialty priests would have meant being game world specific. Maybe TSR\WotC will make a patch for specialty priests for the realms and greyhawk. This will only happen if we pester them endlessly until they summit.

isn't there a spell for this. Hmmmm... Hobbs's Endless Irritator... Hmmm

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and indespensible during play.......2000-08-07

I cannot imagine playing without CR2. I was skeptical when I ordered it, but once I transferred my characters into the program, updating and adjusting them is a snap. No more re-writing character sheets when the eraser burns through the HP area.

Also, I am in the middle of re-drawing my campaign world with MapMaker. It is great for keeping all information at hand.

The biggest praise I have is the books. There is over $100 worth of books in just CR2, and the Expansion at least doubles that. A snap to type in the name of the spell, and it pop up almost instantly with all relevant info. Saves us about 1 hr a night worth of playtime each night.

        2 out of 5 stars Holes.......2000-01-18

There are major holes in this software if your doing any of the TSR campaign setting. It doesn't cover gods and the kits can be a pain to fit in. The software has limits on how well things are linked up. If your running "Plane Scape" or "Ravenloft" don't waist your time here. You can add the races and classes for these settings but the time it would take you to add these races isn't worth the effort. Crack the books open.

With that said here are the good parts. You can make new monsters, races and classes. You can do some mapping and you have all the core books. I don't know about a lot of you but I'm not looking forward to 3rd edition. This product gives you the core books on disk so if you want to play 2nd edition you have them forever. We all know how well the TSR books are made. Any one remember "Unearthed Arcana" I do.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It's OK, but I ended up being a Myers Briggs fan........2007-05-07

In order to develop a personality typing method, you have to make it fairly complicated, taking more patience than the average pop psych afficionado. Thus, the enneagram method is just as complicated as the 16 personality types found in Myers Briggs method. You can't get around that. That being said, the book fails for a number of reasons.

First, it spends so much time explaining the method that it never spends a great deal of time justifying it. Thus, it was not a very good introduction to the subject. Since it is a scientific method, the author should assume that the person reading it is a skeptic, like most scientists.

Second, the book argues that this method leads to a spiritual awareness of the contingency of personality, where you understand that you are not your personality, you are in fact a soul (put simplistically). Well, the author should express an interest in his own subject, I would think. People are trying to understand their personalities, and yet the author is essentially arguing that the personality types are just window dressing to your true identity. I expect psychology, and I get the Dalai Lama!

I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm saying it is morally questionable to place all that spiritual extra baggage on what could possibly be a scientific method. The author is essentially saying that everyone will come to the same conclusions about spirituality once they take a hard look at their personality type. This is wishful thinking. For someone who purports to understand differences among people, I think it is ridiculous for the author to suggest that everyone's reaction to this process would be so uniform; people may formulate their own spiritual conclusions, or they may not see it as having a spiritual component at all.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough "Forced-Choice" Test Better than General Reading.......2007-03-05

Having read widely in the fascinating Enneagram literature, I find this test indispensable in accomplishing the actual typing of a person. People and their friends often wish for one Enneagram label or another to apply to them, and Enneagram typing from general reading is susceptible to this *major* distortion. Containing dozens of questions, this thought provoking, multiple choice test -- which forces a choice between the answers presented for each question, often including either *no* answers appealing to the examinee, or *too many* appealing answers -- gives the examinee less opportunity to answer by prior self-stereotyping, and less of a hint of what Enneagram types correspond to which answers. "Forced-choice" testing, widely respected in psychological testing circles, can be uncomfortable when no answers seem a happy fit, but they are a good testing format. Even in other excellent books by Riso and Hudson -- also my favorite Enneagram writers -- the shorter quizzes don't compare in clarity to this. Don't skip this in your efforts to type yourself or a friend.

This book also contains a short exposition of the Enneagram approach and types. This part is cursory, and reading one of Riso and Hudson's lengthier books will be far more satisfying for this information and analysis. Helen Palmer's work is also excellent, but she takes a darker, more pessimistic view of human beings. Hudson and Riso, while recognizing each type's darker sides, present a far more balanced analysis.

        4 out of 5 stars Know Thyself........2007-01-09

This book gives you the tools to identify and understand your inherent strengths and weakness'. This process is vital if you are to apply action steps to improve your life. If you want to hit the target, you have to know where the target is!

5 out of 5 stars Discovering Your Personality Type .......2006-03-03

The book is a quick read and easy to understand. The insights are mostly good and the system an interesting one. Take the test and see how accurate you think it is. It does provide a tool for understanding your own and others behavior.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-02-05

If you have read Personality Types then this book is even better. It actually shows you who you are by a series of questions. I remember because it showed me I was wrong about my own self (after just reading Personality Types)! So, needless to say, this book along with Personality Types is all you will ever need to learn to about psychology.

        Book Description

The Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator (RHETI, Version 2.5) is an 18-page paperback booklet Offprint of the personality questionnaire available in their best selling book, DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE (Houghton Mifflin, 1995). The RHETI consists of 144 pairs of statements in a forced-choice format; it is self-scoring and takes approximately 40 minutes to take and score.

The RHETI has sold over 100,000 copies in book form, and is consistently in the top 15 Enneagram books on Amazon.com. The Offprint has sold 27,000 copies in Version 2.0 from The Enneagram Office, and an additional 39,000 copies in Version 2.5 for a total of 66,000 copies from our office.

The RHETI is the acknowledged "gold standard" in Enneagram based personality tests, and is widely available in foreign translations (Japanese, German, Dutch, Norwegian, and French, and Spanish among them) and used in a variety of self-help, therapeutic, and business and organizational settings.

It is approximately 85% accurate for determining basic type; when the top three scores are considered, the RHETI is even more accurate since the person's real type is almost certainly one of them. Academic validation of the RHETI is underway at the University of Akron, as well as by graudate students in the United Statesand Hong Kong.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Rhiso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator.......2007-10-05

I was quite disappointed with this. It claims to be 'scientifically validated', yet I found that for many of the pairs of statements I, and those I tested it on, could easily have chosen either one as true of ourselves - or each as true in different circumstances. For example, the first pair of statements reads "I've been romantic and imaginative"; "I've been pragmatic and down to earth". Haven't most of us been both at different times? I certainly have. I did the test a number of times, giving slightly different answers - because both options seemed equally relevant - and was 'diagnosed' on different occasions as radically different personality types. Having had some experience of working with the enneagram, I knew some of these diagnoses to be wildly out. It's also very easy to tell where the pairs of questions are leading, and so be subtly influenced to answer in a particular way - in other words it's really easy to cheat oneself. For example, asked to choose between "I have sometimes put people off by being too aggressive," and "I have sometimes put people off by being too 'up-tight'" - no prizes for guessing which way both those statements tend. And what if neither fits? I think the truth is that it is only possible to tell which personality type you are by talking face to face with someone really experienced in this field. It's just not possible to devise a fixed questionnaire which is subtle enough. I would suggest you can get a much better idea of your own or someone else's personality type by reading the detailed descriptions on the website, or better still, finding a living practitioner. So as a practical tool, I don't rate this very highly at all, I'm afraid.

3 out of 5 stars Good test, but you have options in this area............2006-05-03

This is a very good Enneagram test, but the price is steep and you can get the test along with an introductory book to the Enneagram by buying Riso and Hudson's book "Discovering Your Type." Going this route is even less expensive than buying this pamphlet. You can also take the test online at Riso and Hudson's website. Unfortunately, they do not offer the same test in their book "The Wisdom of the Enneagram," however; the mini-tests that begin each chapter are useful for differentiating out scores that approximate each other on this test.

If you are having difficulty typing yourself, I also recommend that you look at the childhood patterns in "The Wisdom of the Enneagram" and read all the types and notice which one tends to trigger you emotionally. Being triggered emotionally is often a sign that you are really on the trail of your type.

Sometimes it's difficult to work out your type quickly. If you fall into this category, then it is useful to look at the ego delusions of each type and work through them keeping in mind how you resemble each of them in some way. The Enneagram is a tool for self growth and eventually your type will become clear if you are patient and keep an open mind. Even Riso and Hudson clearly indicate that their test is only about 80% reliable for typing people, which is my experience in working with people.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and Unambiguous, Significance and Depth.......2006-04-05

When I decided to accurately determine my enneagram type this was the test that I chose. Personally, I found it to be both perceptive and unambiguous. None of the 144 questions didn't seem to "fit"- I was able to answer them with certainty. It was obvious that something of significance and depth was being ascertained here.

As for the accuracy, all I can say is that I've also had the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator professionally administered more than once (INFJ) and it agreed with the commonly accepted correlation with type 4 on the enneagram. Plus, from what I've read so far, the healthy and evolving type 4 seems to closely fit my own path.

What interested me in the enneagram in the first was its historical connection with Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, and the Neo-Platonists. Apparently the symbolism also passed through the Sufi tradition, as did so much of Greek esoterism.

        5 out of 5 stars Know Thyself.......2005-08-06

This test helped me to realize how wonderful I really am. It scored me equally on all of the introverted characteristics while showing that I am balanced between emotion, thinking, and action. I know what my strengths are and I can focus on enhancing them. Knowing what you're made of is half the battle. For everyone who is into self knowledge, this test and supporting literature is a must.

        3 out of 5 stars tell me something I don't already know.......2005-03-04

If you are looking for insight, look elsewhere beyond the Enneagram. This construct is great at illuminating qualities of oneself and others that are obvious. But in terms of really digging for deeper understanding, they are lacking. This is fun stuff to have, much like the astrological horrorscopes, the I-Ching, and tarot cards. They are fun, but not necessarily enlightening. The Meyers-Briggs can also tell you a lot about yourself, but again, I challenge you to find something from these types of personality inventories that you don't already know.

Not for people looking for insight, its a fun conversation piece.

        Book Description

Learning Joy from Dogs Without Collars is about my memories of growing up, being raised by an eccentric and uniquely idealistic single mother. It is about how I was sometimes homeless and lived in shelters and in one apartment after another. It is about adventures my mother and I had, including moving across the country -- from Astoria, Oregon, a small coastal town, to Boston, Massachusetts, a bigger city on a different coast. It is about how I -- by accident, it seemed -- found myself to be the only girl on a high school wrestling team, how that worked out, and what I learned.

The book is also about how I later went to Harvard, a world completely unlike the ones I grew up in; how I adapted to life there. It is about how I met my father when I was nineteen, and how my father finally became my dad.

It is about all of these things, and everything in between. It is the story of a girl coming into her own, learning and understanding her place in the world. It is about the innocence and resiliency of childhood -- the space of happiness and joy which poverty was unable to demolish or diminish.

Bravo! a well written memoir. Thank you for taking the time to write about your life. I enjoyed the progressive chapters ---Lauralee's unique dance of life. I am sure it wasn't easy. You held my interest and my heart, Bravo to your mom--cause she was the backbone to your success.
A very interesting novel, especially if you have a teeenager involved in wrestling. Imagine! the only female on the wrestling team at Harvard. Again, thank you for writing your story.

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant read over all...........2005-10-20

I thought this book was enjoyable to read. Say, a decent book to read in the park on a nice afternoon. Nothing too intense. It was a little slow in the middle, but still had enough interesting stories to keep the reader going and find out what happened to this young woman. It picked up the pace toward the end, almost putting off too much for the end; the intense reunion with her father, graduating Harvard, and plenty of wrestling team metaphors for her growing self-realizations -- all within the last few chapters. Compared to other books I've read, it wouldn't be a 5-star because it wasn't particularly life-altering, funny, witty or original. A well-rounded 1st novel for Summer though.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! I hope we hear more from Lauralee!.......2004-08-03

This is one of those books that was hard for me to put down. I think I read it over a period of 1 1/2 days. However, I felt that Lauralee skipped over a lot of things. I hope that she writes more about her life. I can't help but wonder what life has in store for her!?!

        5 out of 5 stars Immensely moving.......2003-12-09

Lauralee Summer's memoir moved me beyond words. It is so uplifting to read stories like hers that show the resilience of the human spirit.

Despite her very unconventional childhood, Lauralee's mother was very loving and supportive within her capacity to provide for her brilliant daughter.

An earlier reviewer mentioned her father. This chapter moved me more than almost any other. If there was ever a person who regretted his earlier behavior and genuinely tried to make it up, then her father would get my vote.

Inspiring, moving, beautifully written in the same vein as ANGELA'S ASHES and FINDING FISH

        5 out of 5 stars Humanity.......2003-08-01

A woman and her infant daughter, chronically transient and homeless...the mother (an unsung champion) makes love, tenderness, knowledge and wisdom available to her child in small ways, whenever and however she can; one or two important people at critical moments, and the bright, irrepressible child grows up and goes to Harvard.

There is a tender innocence throughout. A protective telling of the author's story. The love between the mother and the child...the anguish felt over their circumstances...never maudlin, always sweet...intimate sadness, a tender grief...an un-self-pitying resolve. I sensed all of these feelings and ideas on almost every page.

And, finally, the child becomes a young woman, intelligent, strong and loving.

I think of this as more than just another Horatio Alger story.

        Book Description

Garnered from the memoirs, letters, and diaries of common soldiers as well as officers, this vivid and gripping volume of eyewitness history offers firsthand accounts of the engagements that bloodied battlefields in Europe and America during the French Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the War of 1812. A compelling chronicle, it marches through the more than two decades of battles and campaigns in which the brilliant and charismatic general Napoleon reinvented warfare. From Austerlitz to Moscow, from New Orleans to Salamanca, here are the true-life stories behind history-making events that have become the stuff of some of the world’s most popular novels and films. Here are the famous hussars and artillery, the musket and sword, the patriotic fervor and paralyzing fear, heroic deeds and tactical disasters. Here, too, are detailed views of the ordinary soldier’s daily life: the short rations, the long marches in the hot Iberian summer and numbing Russian winter, the painful coping illness and wounds, the lashings, the amours, and the always close companionship of danger and death. Vibrantly, vitally, here is history at its most intimate and most thrilling.

        5 out of 5 stars First-Hand Accounts of Campaigning.......2001-06-14

This is a compendium of first hand accounts of campaigning and fighting during the Napoleonic period. While it is only excerpts, those chosen are excellent and render a very good picture of both the soldiers and the times in which they lived and fought. While it would be best, especially doing research, to have the entire diaries or memoirs of those mentioned in this volume, works of this nature are a great help to those who don't have the time or means to secure those priceless tomes.

The excerpts are either French or English, with one American memoir from the War of 1812, and include some old reliables such as Coignet, Marbot, and Mercer. However, there are some that arent' seen too often, such as Marshal MacDonald's recollection of Wagram in 1809 (not always a reliable source), as well as Lejeune's story of the Great Retreat from Moscow (somewhat more reliable). He reluctantly served as Marshal Davout's chief of staff during the Retreat, serving in his normal efficient manner, having been an aide-de-camp to the Grande Armee's chief of staff, Marshal Berthier, who didn't suffer fools gladly.

On the British side there is an excerpt from William Tomkinson's excellent memoir of the war in Spain, the bloody story of the stormings of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz by William Graham of the famous Connaught Rangers, David Robertson's memoir of Egypt in 1801 and a rare glimpse of campaigning in northern Germany in 1813 by one of the few British units to participate in that campaign, the 73d Foot. As a rare treat, there is a memoir from a Kentucky militia corporal, Samuel Stubbs, who enlisted at age 63 and served at Queenstown, Lundy's Lane, Fort Erie, and at the Battle of New Orleans.

Taken as a whole, this is an interesting, informative collection of memoirs and tall tales, that is as entertaining as it is valuable. It is useful for both research and entertainment, and is a must for the historian, wargamer, and researcher. The author has done us all a great service with this outstanding work. It is highly recommended

                      Book Description

Generations of plant scientists have been fascinated by alpine plant life - with the exposure of organisms to dramatic climatic gradients over a very short distance.
This comprehensive text treats a wide range of topics: alpine climate and soils, plant distribution and the treeline phenomenon, physiological ecology of water-, nutritional- and carbon relations of alpine plants, plant stress and plant development, biomass production, aspects of reproductive biology, and human impacts on alpine vegetation. Geographically the book covers all parts of the world including the tropics.
This new edition of Alpine Plant Life has been fully updated. It now includes over a hundred new references, new diagrams, revised and extended chapters, and a geographic index.
