5 out of 5 stars Do You Have Flying Dreams?.......2006-01-26

This is a fun, funny, informative book. Once you start reading you don't want to put it down. If you have ever had those dreams where you just start flying, this book will start you thinking, "I can really do that!".

I immediately started day-dreaming about paramotoring and couldn't get it out of my head, like listening to an old fashioned love song.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Light Flight Fans.......2005-03-08

I read Chris's book about a year ago. When I started reading it, I could not put it down. Chris does what few authors and pilots have the courage to do: not sugar coat the details. With brutal honesty he shares the good, bad and ugly in a collection of entertaining stories. It's well written, witty, honest, informative, and humorous, giving his account of what it's like to learn and fly these amazing personal flying machines.

Some of Chris's recommendations of equipment and designs are outdated by today's standards. This sport is still in its infancy and there has been much progress in the gear since this book was published. But that does not take away from the extraordinary value of this book as a fantastic account of what it's like to fly like a bird.

As a PPG instructor, I recommend this book as a "must read" for all prospective, new and veteran PPG pilots alike.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive PPG classic.......2005-02-11

Struggling to keep up with my clients' deadlines, I still had to get in a few chapters of "Running Into the Sky" each night. What a riveting, enjoyable read!

As a former pilot and ultralight enthusiast but a new convert to PPG, I struggled to find honest information on the training experience, PPG dealers, equipment, technique, and pitfalls to avoid. Most of all, I sought to know what it's LIKE. Yes, there are similarities to fixed-wing, but the soft airfoil, control geometry, etc introduce many foreign issues -- and there's so much hype and misinformation in PPG.

The key value of the book is Chris Wolf's self-abasing humility: the transparency of one talking to a friend. No attempt to impress... how very refreshing. I don't mean to convey it's not a fun read; it's factual, comprehensive, palpably useful - but it's also simply enjoyable. The author's descriptive narrative and self-deprecating humor affords the reader a feeling that they are truly there, experiencing these things (however vicariously). As a former editor for a book publisher, I know that few authors can do this. "Running Into the Sky" will be the definitive primer on PPG for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to get!.......2004-10-30

I've been interested in getting involved in the sport for a while now, but wanted to hear both the positive and negative aspects before I went further. Chris's book is an honest and well thought out presentation of both sides. His description of flight is a rush and combined with the help humor and raw information, the book clarified what the sport is all about. After reading it, I now understand a whole lot more why I HAVE to get into the air as soon as possible! "Running Into the Sky" is NOT a sales pitch. Its an HONEST read.

    Pete

    4 out of 5 stars Another pilot's thoughts........2004-08-28

Running into the Sky was both very informative about the technical and practical aspects of learning to fly Powered Paragliders as well as being a very entertaining saga. The author has a great sense of humor which is mixed in good proportion with valuable information.

Anyone who flys or dreams of flying a ram air wing, powered or non, should give this a read.

This book is exactly what I needed to separate the good/excellent films from the bad and the ugly. I don't watch films (primarily those on TV) without consulting it. It has enabled me to find popular as well as little-known films that are well-made, well-acted, and well-directed. It has saved me hours of watching films that I wish I'd never seen and reading film guides that include most of the films ever made.

      Book Description

This unique two-disc set features an up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM on the NASA Genesis mission, plus a DVD-VIDEO disc with nearly two hours of top-quality video of NASA coverage of the entry and subsequent unexpected crash landing of the capsule in the Utah desert in September 2004.

GENESIS MISSION: Although we have no eyewitness account of the formation of the solar system, scientists are attempting to understand what happened back then from pieces of evidence including meteorites and interstellar dust grains. An additional piece of evidence that would help in this quest for understanding is an accurate knowledge of the detailed composition of the Sun. In that quest, during August 2001, NASA launched the Genesis spacecraft. The Genesis spacecraft journeyed toward the Sun. It went to a place outside the Earth's magnetic field where the Earth and Sun gravities are balanced. While in orbit, the spacecraft bathed in solar wind that is flung out from the Sun. After 29 months in orbit, the sample collectors were re-stowed and returned to Earth. In September 2004, the capsule was supposed to be captured in mid-air by helicopter crews as it gently floated down by parachute. Unfortunately, the parachutes did not open, and the malfunction let the tumbling capsule crash into the Utah desert. NASA television coverage of the entire entry operation, including the deployment of the retrieval helicopters and a clear view of the tumbling craft hitting the dirt, is provided on the DVD-VIDEO, along with a portion of the post-landing news briefing.

As a bonus, there is complete coverage of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft mission to explore Saturn and its moon, Titan. With its stunning rings and dozen of moons, Saturn is an intriguing planet for many reasons. Contents include nearly 500 pre-encounter image files in JPG, GIF, and TIF formats, along with 67 video clips in QuickTime and MPEG formats, with depictions of the spacecraft, instruments, launch, and mission profile.

The CD-ROM has over 9000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into Acrobat Reader, providing a complete full-text index. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable! The DVD-VIDEO disc, reproduced in the DVD-R format, can be played on DVD players connected to televisions.

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool.

4 out of 5 stars Want to Know If a Film is Worth Watching? Look No Further.......2006-07-14

I first became acquainted with this series when I came across the 1990 edition of the movie guide. Densely packed with films and short reviews and ratings that accompanied them, it served as a guide to my mother when she owned a video shop at the time. The old and tattered copy became an enduring companion, a volume that I would love to browse through, reveling in it's clipped information on movies of various languages and genres.

Feeling that I needed an update to the DVD age, I purchased this edition. Containing more reviews and the same well-written brevity that I was familiar with in the '90 edition, the 2004 edition is an attractive guide on what to watch.

There are several compromises to the numerous additions, though. With the added films to review, the reviews have become much shorter, too much in many instances that they barely scratch the surface of what should be conveyed. One of the wonders of the DVD format is the recent influx of boxed sets which feature comprehensive and definitive editions of the works of particular individuals and genres in filmdom. Releases by the works of great directors, producers, actors, and genres such as those on silent film, horror, documentaries, etc., have been a delight to the senses for the home viewer. Unfortunately, these wonderful products are not reviewed. I would also have preferred the 1-star rating to be used, as with the number of films included there will inevitably be films of this standard. And of course, one doesn't always agree with the reviews, some being so distant to one's opinion that the reader can't help but shake or scratch his/her head.

Criticisms aside, the "Dvd & Video Guide" is still the guide to use on selecting what films to view in the notoriously inconsistent world of cinema. Credit to Mick Martin and Marsha Porter for continuing this wonderful series which is still the best in the market.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide.......2004-08-27

The reviews are great in VDG. The best part is the actor and director index in the back of the book. I've never found another guide with this in it.

5 out of 5 stars The best, complete, honest, no nonsense movie guide around.......2004-05-12

Ten years ago, long before Istarted surfing the web, I purchased my first ever copy of what was then called VMG. As I was passionate about movies (and still am), I read every single review there was in the book, and in the end it looked as tattered as hell. I still have my first copy, it's yellow-brownish and torn, and for me symbolizes my great love for this book and for movies.

I've leafed through Maltin's guide quite a few times, and the "video and dvd movie guide" is hands down the best there is. Here's why:
Five stars to turkey, a rating system flexible enough for nuiances, and there are also the 1/2 ratings, i.e ***1/2. This allows for great accuracy in reviews, as opposed to the broad strokes which a four star rating sometimes uses.

The book is very easy to read, the title is highlighted, the stars are bold and clear (unlike in Maltin's). Not to mention the Turkey!

The fabulous cast and director indexes. Today, at the Internet age, you can log on to imdb.com and find complete filmographies, but in the past those indexes taught me a great deal about cast and directors body of work. And it still does. Sometimes I don't feel like opening the computer to find something.

This is a no nonsense guide. It's totally unpretentious, it usually shows a movie true worth, without over analizing, without apologies. It is impossible to agree with everything in the book, yet I've seen hundreds of films which appear in this guide, and as far as I'm concerned, it stands at about 90 percent hit, 10 percent miss.

So, ten years later, I'm still buying the new editions of this book. It was and still is a great tool for me, and it taught me a great deal about movies.

People Magazine was right. This is THE BEST.

4 out of 5 stars very good but sometimes frustrating.......2004-01-02

I get this tome every year for Christmas from my hubby because I couldn't live without it! I used to get the Maltin one, but I switched because I like the more complete Porter and Martin way of reviewing--from a big old turkey to five stars and also because of the Oscar guide and complete actor guides in the back. I like to just read this book and mark movies I'd like to watch, which leads to my only two complaints:
      1) I wish the foreign films with subtitles were not mixed in with normal American movies--or if they must be, mark them in an obvious way before I get all excited about it--there are plenty of people, like me, who can barely sit through a subtitled film no matter how highly rated.
      2) There are TONS of movies not rated at all. Now I know that the point of this book is only movies you can RENT, but when I''m playing with the TV remote and come across a movie, I'd like to be able to look it up and see if it's worth watching. Many times I go through the bother of looking it up only to find that, apparently since it's not in video stores, it's not in the book.

Otherwise, the reviews are very good, (though some inexplicably longer than others) sometimes downright funny. Be forewarned, though, ladies...a great chick flick can nearly never get a great rating, but a great shoot 'em up invariably will.

      3 out of 5 stars Sometimes Incorrect.......2003-12-23

I was all set to title this review "head and shoulders above Maltin's guide, 4,000 more reviews of movies that can actually be purchased" But now I see that statement is not entirely true. Who wouldn't prefer a guide devoted to films you can actually buy instead of wasting space on movies that have never been released on home video, and as such are virtually impossible to find? And all this for a dollar less than Maltin's. But what if Martin/Porter are wrong? So far I've found two movies that haven't been released in the Martin/Porter guide. They are also reviewed in Maltin's guide and correctly identified as unavailable. Plus, there are some films that Martin/Porter don't review, but Maltin does, then again the reverse is true. The main reason I switched is that I have used Maltin's guide since 2001, and all of them with the exception of the 2003 guide have fallen apart in one way or another. The 2001 guide actually split in half. I think that I'll stay with Martin/Porter for at least another year and give them a chance to correct their errors, but getting your hopes up that something is available only to find out that it is not is quite frustrating.

I was hoping to get practical information on viable alternatives. Unfortunately, there were many included where job growth was expected to be slow. In addition, there were many jobs that required further schooling although the author DID NOT clearly indicate which ones.

I wanted a book to tell me about viable alternatives for teachers which would not require me to go back to school. I was a bit disappointed and will continue looking.

                            Book Description

Smith Wigglesworth, often referred to as the "Apostle of Faith," is one of those unusual people in history who exemplifies the principle that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things for his eternal purposes.

Although he died in 1947, Smith Wigglesworth is arguably more well-known now than when he was alive. He founded no movement, authored no books, had no official disciples, and no doctrine or theological college bears his name, but through his audacious faith and spectacular healing ministry, Wigglesworth fanned the flames of revival in many countries throughout the world. Thousands came to know Jesus Christ as their savior, received healing, and were delivered from demonic oppression as a result of his ministry.

In this new biography, Julian Wilson has written one of the most comprehensive accounts of the life of Smith Wigglesworth to date. Wilson has captured his unquestioning faith and trust in the Bible and his continual prayer and communion with his Lord. Wigglesworth claimed to have read only the Bible from the time he learned to read to the time of his death at the age of eighty-eight. Emanating from his intimacy with God and his Word was a divine power others sensed when they were in his presence.

                            - Includes many photographs, including some rarely seen

I sent this book to a friend as a Christmas Gift. He thoroughly enjoyed the book. Smith Wigglesworth was an illeterate Master Plumber that became an Apostle of Christ. The relationship Smith had with God was awesome; the fact that he brought several dead people, back to life.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of a True Man of Faith.......2005-10-13

I've read several biographies of Smith Wigglesworth over the past twenty years, but this is one of the very best I've read. An honest and unapologetic account of the life of this very unique man of God. The story of Wigglesworth's life is so inspiring that almost 60 yrs since his death his ministry of faith, holiness, and healing is still touching lives.
I would highly recomend this book to anyone without hesitation. Read it and see what it will do to your own faith!

                            Book Description

Founded by Heinrich Himmler in 1944 when it became clear Germany would be invaded, the Werewolf guerrilla movement was given the task of slowing down the Allied advance to allow time for the success of negotiations, or "wonder weapons." Staying behind in territory occupied by the Allies, its mission was to carry out acts of sabotage, arson, and assassination, both of enemy troops and of "defeatist" Germans. Perry Biddiscombe details Werewolf operations against the British, Russians, and fellow Germans, on the Eastern and Western Fronts and in the post-war chaos of Berlin. Giving the lie to the established story of a cowed German population meekly submitting to defeat, this is a fascinating insight into what has been described as "the death scream of the Nazi regime."

this is a very good book if one want to find out more about what happen to the nazi party or what is left of it.in this book it tells you that they didnt just drop their guns and go home but keep on fighting .well doing sabotajing and terrorizing the allies who is occupying germany.if one want to find out how and what they to without really any big support . and in small cell.it is like they are terrorist in germany after the war until they die out in 1947.great if you ask me but one have to really read it to find out why i find it great.

This historical reasearch is in my accounts, just short of a good book. Even though the author spends a good amount of time explaining the origins and training of these bandits of a lost cause, I find in too many places, especially in 4th and 5th chapter, unfinished research of the fate of many of the Werewolf leaders and other mebers, it is surprising too me, for example, that Dr. Perry had not been able to find out if one the arrested Germans had been executed or not. In my view it a matter of digging deep enough in Allied archives, too bring the answer. That's called research. The good aspect of this book is that it gives a reasonable insight into this interesting period of the Nazi era. The author had a good and a fascanating subject in his hands but fails too complete the research on the matter.

                            Book Description

Stetson Kennedy here tells the story of his post-World War II years as an undercover agent in the KKK (where he rose to Kleagle rank). Fast-paced and suspenseful, the book is a gripping mix of eyewitness reports of Klan activities, accounts of Kennedy's clandestine information-gathering, and his efforts to report his findings to the media and to any law enforcement agencies that would listen. As a result, for a time in the 1940s, Washington news commentator Drew Pearson was reading Klan meeting minutes on national radio, and radio's Superman had America's kids sharing the most current Klan passwords as fast as the Dragon could think up new ones.

This book is an awesome account of Kennedy's time in the Klu Klux Klan. I enjoyed reading every page of this book. Kennedy has got to be one of the bravest men ever. At times this book had me really nervous wondering wat was gonna happen to him. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn more about the KKK or anyone that just enjoys a good read.

4 out of 5 stars Ku Klux Kennedy.......2005-02-28

This book is set in the deep south of Georgia, mainly in the years following World War II. The Klan Unmasked is the true story of the author, Stetson Kennedy, in an undercover battle with the famed white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan. He decides the best way to bring the Klan to its knees is to go undercover as a Klan member and get the dirt on the Klan into the public eye. A few characters help Kennedy on his mission including Dan Duke, the Assistant Attorney General of Georgia. Many minor characters are in leagues with the KKK whom Kennedy `befriends', while working against them. The opposition to Kennedy is the KKK, certain political leaders, and white supremacists across the nation.
Normally I never read nonfiction; I usually find it boring. However, when I read the back cover of The Klan Unmasked, it really peaked my interest. After reading maybe ten pages, I knew I was going to enjoy this book. The reason this book was such a good read is attributed to the author's ability to keep the suspense element flowing throughout the entire book. There is always something new happening, something devious the Klan is conjuring. There were some points in the book where I was really thirsting for more detail and explanation. Sometimes it seemed as though Kennedy assumed his readers knew the background information, when the information just wasn't there. Reading The Klan Unmasked truly opened my eyes to the atrocities of the KKK in the Deep South. The author gets your attention well and really makes you know this stuff was going on. I would suggest this book to a reader who won't take offense over racial slurs or some violence. You should read this book if you dislike the Ku Klux Klan, because this one will really empower and enlighten you. Do not read this book if you are in any way affiliated with the KKK; you'll only become angry.

4 out of 5 stars An Easy Entertaining Read about Amerikkkan Terrorism.......2002-09-04

Kennedy first released this book in 1954, the 1990 edition includes some practical ideas to fight Klan and other neo-fascist organizations in an afterword.

This book is a very easy read, conversational in tone, and compelling in content. Mr. Kennedy outlines his infiltration into the headquarters chapter of the KKK in Atlanta and the Columbia Brownshirt organization there, and his undercover hob-knobbing with violent racists and hatemongers, and the colorful illiterates and semi-literates that made up the membership of the Klan and their fellow travellers. He put his life in danger many times confronting the evil, brutal and stupid nature of southern racists.

Another compelling part of the story is the complicity of the police, FBI, the Democratic machine of the Talmadge family, (who rode the upsurge in Klan violence to national political prominence), and the Republican businessmen of the south who paid Klansmen to help bust union drives by busting heads and nightriding.

He also spends alot of time detailing Klan rituals and meetings, and the seemingly neverending lists of Kleagles, Kludds, etc. that made up the hoodoo hierarchy of the Klan organization. It seems like never had so much empty ritual been used in attempt to 'sanctify' such mindless violence.

A good book that gives a good cross-section of what Klan terror and rightist violence was all about in the 1940s and 1950s.

5 out of 5 stars Kennedy is a true American hero.......2002-08-14

A friend originally recommended this book to me, I was initially put off by the subject matter. The Klan is not really something I wanted to know about, also the book was written long before I was born, so I wasn't overly excited about it. However, I am so glad I did read it, because not only is Kennedy a hero (for infiltrating the Klan at it's most powerful), he is also a fantastic writer. This book reads like a thriller, but it's all true. I think this book would appeal to many people, from a wide cross section of society, even if, like me, they don't think so at first. I have bought copies for friends and family, and have received positive feedback from them. This book warrants its five star rating.

During the period of time that author Stetson Kennedy served as an undercover FBI agent, Gay Edgar Hoover had little taste, or interest in, using his little Hoovers to unmask those with whom he was in sympathy--The Klan. The director, who fought the American inquisition as a file clerk, instead relished opportunities to hound members of the American left--ranging from hard core members of the American CPUSA to liberal and progressive organizations opposing American policy across the globe.

Kennedy's book is a story of the adventures of one man to unmask and expose members and organizations of the extreme American right. The frustrated, ignorant, uneducated, bigoted who view the American dream as a nightmare for them. A dream which gives everyone else a chance but them.

The story of the Klan is well known. Kennedy brings the reader inside the organization of white sheet wearing ignoramuses and bigots populating the American political underworld.

It is a book to read which reminds us that despite the outward veneer of civilization, there exists pockets of alienated and dangerous people ready to use resentment, bigotry and hatred for their own ends.

A good read for a journey into the netherworld of darkness.

                                  Book Description

When the first field study of the Florida panther took place in 1973, so little was known about the animal that many scientists believed it was already extinct. During more extensive research conducted from 1981 to 1986, panthers were proven to exist, but the handful of senile, anemic, and parasite-infested specimens that were captured indicated a grim future. During those early years a remarkably enduring image of the panther was born, and despite voluminous data gathered over the next decade that showed the panther to be healthy, long-lived, and reproducing, that earlier image has yet to be dispelled.

For nine years, biologist David S. Maehr served as project leader of the Florida Panther Study Project, helping to gather much of the later, surprisingly positive data. In The Florida Panther , he presents the first detailed portrait of the animal-its biology, natural history, and current status-and a realistic assessment of its prospects for survival.

Maehr also provides an intriguing look at the life and work of a field biologist: how captures are made, the intricacies of radio-telemetry tracking, the roles of various team members. He describes the devastating intrusion of politics into scientific work, as he discusses the widespread problems caused by the failure of remote and ill-informed managers to provide needed support and to communicate effectively to the public the goals and accomplishments of the scientists. He examines controversial efforts to establish a captive breeding program and to manipulate the Florida panther's genetic stock with the introduction of relatives from west Texas.

Protection of high-quality habitat, much of it in the hands of private landowners, is the key to the long-term survival of the Florida panther. Unless agency decision makers and the public are aware of the panther's true situation, little can be done to save it. This book will play a vital role in correcting widespread misconceptions about the panther's current condition and threats to its survival.

Not really a scientific essay in my opinion, but a labor of love. A good read and something that will let you feel and fear for the future of this beautiful animal. Hats off to Mr. Maehr for taking the effort to relate his experiences... one of my favorite nature "books".... long live the panther

                                  Dear readers,

Today morning before leaving for work i happen to watch National geographic channel wherein there was one hour programe on Florida panther. It's survival seems to be highly endangered due to the fact that their genetic poll being limited and in-breeding among the cats inevitable it gives a very tragic case of survival. I being an avid wildlife enthsiast from India hope that American people will defenitely do something for the survival of Florida panther.

                                  Thanks
