ASIN: 0789425122 |
Book Description
As Farmer Brown surveys his near-perfect farm, the air is filled with sounds: a purring cat, a snoring hound, a bossy little rooster who crows cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. But suddenly... lightning flashed, the air was humming. "Look out!" he cried, "a twister's coming!" Before he knows it, "clouds of sheep whirled through the air,k the clothesline chased the goat and mare until each one had on a pair of Farmer Brown's plain underwear!" But this is only the beginning. For when the wind stops and drops everyone back to earth, the farmer's cows oink, his pigs moo, his sheep cluck, the cat coos, and worst of all, when Farmer Brown tries to shout -- only cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo comes out! How Farmer Brown and his animals get their voices back will have young readers laughing out loud, eager to chime in on the mixed-up animal sounds and rollicking refrains. An irresistible read-aloud with funny hijinks from start to finish!Customer Reviews:
Frivolity on the Farm.......2001-08-17
All the animals are just comical. The cat is also quite cute. At the beginning, all the animals are making their normal animally sounds. The pigs are oinking, the cows moo.
But then he heard a rumbling sound That made his smile turn upside down. ...."Look out!" he cried. "A twister's coming!"
The following pages will bring giggles as all the animals get caught up in the clothes line and the expressions on the sheep's faces.....you just have to see it!
When the twister drops them all, the sheep are clucking and the cows are oinking. More silliness continues as the sheep take over the roost and the muddy, oinking cows get slopped.
The rooster takes over the farmer's job and tells everyone what to do. Fortunately another twister hits and sets things right again.
"Except on days when strong winds blew...."
A purely silly delight!

Great Complement to Getting to Yes.......2001-05-22
The Weakest of the Series.......2001-03-07
Perhaps this is because _Getting to Yes_ and _Getting Past No_ are so amazingly good that the level of analysis simply wasn't sustainable for a third book. Or perhaps it's I personally tend to think by analogy and had already started applying the concepts in the first two books to non-business settings. In any event, I found the concepts obvious and the discussions banal.
The quality of the later books seems to return to the same high level as GTY and GPN. For example, _Difficult Conversations_, though not strictly a book "about negotiation," is very fine, although not as easy a read as the other two.
Bottom line? Useful if you haven't figured out on your own how to apply the concepts of principled negotiation to your personal life. Otherwise, skip it.
This is a great book!.......2000-01-03

In response to "New York's" and "peace loving person".......2003-08-22
Hemingway Book Club of Kosova, is the best book written about KOSOVA so far, that's in my opinion and if since I can make recommendation in here - I'd like to recommend Philip J. Cohen's
book "Serbia's Secret War" - that has some similiarities with
Hemingway book Club of Kosova.
Hemingway book Club of Kosova talks about LOVE between Kosovars
and Americans while the "Serbia's Secret War" talks about the
Serbian cooperations with Nazi's throughout the 2-nd world war. And by the way, I am asking you since "I have forgotten"
Who was the person who started the First World War, and those in Slovenia, and Croatia, and Bosnia and Kosova at last.
With all due respect to you "peace loving person" - You have no room to protect the Serbs who have done more then horrible crimes
in not less than 4 countries.
Now who's the racist here, Mrs Huntley or the Serbs she talked about (even though she didn't generalize them all).
God Bless Mrs Huntley and her husband, God Bless U.S.A and all
Peace loving people throughout the world - excluding the fake ones.
An Inspirational Story Of Cross-Cultural Connections........2003-08-06
The Huntleys arrived in Prishtina and found that the city had not been totally destroyed. Since the Serbs needed Prishtina, the capital city, they had left most of the buildings intact. However, as in most of Kosovo, there had been massive looting, vandalism and violence, murders were committed on a large scale, as was ethnic cleansing of the Kosovo Albanians. Huntley writes, "Most of the destruction in Prishtina was below the surface - in the hearts and minds of the residents. I saw this every day, and I never got used to that destruction."
Her students, and every native Albanian, had lost ten years of their lives under the brutal oppression, and apartheid imposed by the Kosovo Serbs. Learning English, in many ways, was key to the economic advancement of the students and their families. Ms. Huntley was deeply touched by the students' eagerness to learn not just English, and grammatical structure, but about the American culture and work ethic. She wanted to provide a safe forum for them to discuss their feelings, and the traumas of the past decade. A book club was established, that met at the Huntley home. The selection was Ernest Hemmingway's "The Old Man And The Sea." The club took-off and became so much more. And the book became a vehicle through which the young people could discuss their lives. Hemmingway's book was fairly easy for them to read, but the novel's meaning was far deeper than the relatively simple language. The students identified with the fable of the triumph of hope and courage over adversity.
The harrowing stories of the young Albanians, and their courage, and determination, are remarkable, and inspirational. Paula Huntley's memoir is an extraordinary tale of cross-cultural human connections, and bonds forged through literature and loving kindness. Highly recommended!

Study of a little-known Civil War Campaign.......2002-05-10
But there were other reasons for the failure. The Union plan was only vaguely mapped out before they left Union territory (basically where the Red flows into the Mississippi), with the Union army and navy proceeding up the river to Shreveport, and capturing and holding that city, with even more vague intentions of proceeding to Texas after. The fleet was commanded by David Dixon Porter, a skilled but somewhat responsibility-shy admiral with no love for the army in this operation. His army counterpart, as much as there was one, was Nathaniel P. Banks, a Massachusetts politician turned soldier who had managed to goof up several campaigns previously, and was one of those political generals (Benjamin Butler was another) who seemed able to get the least out of the professional soldiers under his command. Banks was the local department commander, but apparently no one thought to appoint someone to actually command the troops in the coming campaign, so Banks had to go along and exercise authority over the various troops.
His opponent was Richard Taylor, the son of President Zachary Taylor, and the son-in-law of President (of the Confederacy) Jefferson Davis. Taylor too was an amateur leading an army of professionals. Strangely, in this campaign the Confederates had all the foreign soldiers serving in their army, with a French prince (Polignac) serving as first a brigade and then a division commander, and a Prussian cavalryman leading a regiment of Texans of German extraction thoughout the campaign. Naturally, as a result, the campaign has some colorful characters. It also has the interesting aspect of being enough of a backwater that the soldiers who were driven from prominent positions in the war on the other side of the Mississippi wound up here, where it was hoped their incompetence wouldn't hurt too much if it continued. Charles P. Stone, the man blamed (almost certainly wrongly, for political reasons) for the Union debacle at Ball's Bluff early in the war, was Banks' chief of staff. William B. Franklin, a mediocre corps commander under McClellan in the Army of the Potomac, was fired after Fredericksburg because Ambrose Burnside accused him (with some reason) of failure to obey orders, leading to the failure of his attack. Theophilus Holmes, who proved uncertain in command during the Seven Days Campaign in 1862, was in command of troops at the beginning of the Red River campaign, and was finally removed when he refused to fight once too often for the Confederate authorities.
Author Brooksher (whose previous book, Bloody Hill, about Wilson's Creek, I didn't read) does a competent job of combining the strategy, tactics, personalities, and oral histories of the participants into one volume, which isn't overlong. He didn't have maps prepared for this book, instead choosing to use maps from other books: this works somewhat, but not perfectly by any means. They aren't, as one of the other reviewers noted, the best maps anyway. But maps aside, the author does a very good job of recreating the nature of the campaign, and shows little bias (which you could expect to be pro-Confederate, the author being from Arkansas) towards either side. He makes it clear that the Union army won all but one of the battles, and if they'd been competently led he thinks they would have won the campaign. He also thinks that their victory would have had little affect on the course of the war, just as their defeat didn't prolong the life of the Confederacy much at all. And he shows considerable skill with the thumbnail sketches of the various characters in the campaign. All in all a solid book.
A very good overview of the campaign but..........1999-01-22

How Congress Evolves: Social Bases of Institutional Change

Book Description
From the end of the New Deal until quite recently, the U.S. House of Representatives was dominated by a conservative coalition that thwarted the Democratic majority and prevented the enactment of measures proposed by a succession of liberal Presidents. Today Presidents aren't necessarily liberal and the House of Representatives is not necessarily the graveyard of presidential proposals. What happened? Congress evolved. It all began with airconditioning. In this entertaining tale of one of our most august institutions, Nelson Polsby describes how the Democratic majority finally succeeded in overcoming the conservative coalition, changing the House. The evolution required among other things, the disappearance of Dixiecrats from the House Democratic caucus. Dixiecrats were replaced by the rise of the Republican party in the south. The Republican party in southern states was strengthened by an influx of migrants from the north, who came south to settle after the introduction of residential air conditioning, which made the climate more tolerable to Northerners. This evolutionary process led to the House's liberalization and concluded with the House's later transformation into an arena of sharp partisanship, visible among both Democrats and Republicans. A fascinating read by one of our most influential political scientists, How Congress Evolves breathes new life into the dusty corners of institutional history, and offers a unique explanation for important transformations in the congressional environment.Customer Reviews:

Elegant Description of aTransformation in American Politics.......2004-04-17
The book basically concerns several interwoven phenomena, the House Democratic Caucus exerting political control on its conservative southern members and the rise of the Republican South. Polsby demonstrates how demographic and sociological phenomena weakened the grip of the South on Democratic Party machinery, pulling the Democratic Party to the left. This increased the pressure on Dixiecrats to switch parties, once it became acceptable to be a Southern Democrat.
Polsby also discusses the rise of contemporary partisanship. As the Caucus got the power to discipline its chairman, it demanded an end to bipartisanship. This weakened Republican moderates who called for cooperation and working with the Democrats. This led to the rise in power of Newt Gingrich (an Amazon reviewer!) who advocated a different strategy that eventually led to the 1994 election.
Excellent book, and excellent insights. In several ways, this book will help me do my job better as a staffer in the House of Representatives.
