Book Description

In 2001, author Susan Strong published her first book, The Greatness of Girls. Since that time, she has given extensive readings across the country. More often than not, audiences have asked the same question, "When are you going to do a book like this for boys?" In The Boldness of Boys, Strong takes the same winning approach to encouraging and empowering young people - that is, she solicits essays and anecdotes from famous men who share their own personal insights about growing up. The list of contributors is varied and impressive - all are trailblazers who have won success on their own terms. Among the 40 men included are Colin Powell, Jay Leno, Tony Hawk (skateboard champion), Ansel Adams, Christopher Reeve, Paul Orfalea (founder of Kinko's), Lance Armstrong, Dave Barry, Nelson Mandela, and Senator John McCain. Chapters focus on relevant issues such as school, parents, adversity, challenges, mentors, and perseverance. Each entry includes a brief biography and is followed by a one-to two-page first-person essay. While the stories cover a broad range, the underlying message is the same: We all face challenges in life, but with persistence and courage, we can achieve our greatest dreams.

Book Description

Golf is sometimes referred to as "the wicked game" because it is fiendishly difficult to play well. Yet in the parlance of the Tiger Woods generation, it's also a wickedly good game -- rich, glamorous, and more popular than ever.

When we think about golf -- as it is played at its highest level -- we think of three names: Tiger Woods, the most famous sports figure in the world today, Arnold Palmer, the father of modern golf, and Jack Nicklaus, the game's greatest champion. In this penetrating, forty-year history of men's professional golf, acclaimed author Howard Sounes tells the story of the modern game through the lives of its greatest icons. With unprecedented access to players and their closest associates, Sounes reveals the personal lives, rivalries, wealth, and business dealings of these remarkable men, as well as the murky history of a game that has been marred by racism and sex discrimination. Among the many revelations, the complete and true story of Tiger Woods and his family background is untangled, uncovering surprising new details that inspire the golfer's father to exclaim, "Hell, you taught me some things about my life I never knew about!" Earl Woods and other members of Tiger Woods's family, his friends, girlfriends, caddies, coaches, and business associates were among the 150 people interviewed over two years of research. Others included Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, fellow champions such as Ernie Els, Gary Player, Tony Jacklin, and Tom Watson, and golf moguls such as Mark H. McCormack, billionaire founder of the sports agency IMG.

The Wicked Game is a compelling story of talent, fame, wealth, and power. Entertaining for dedicated golfers, and accessible to those who only follow the game on television, this may be the most original and exciting sports book of the year.

1 out of 5 stars Tarnishing the Trophies.......2007-05-31

A generally quick and easy-reading overview of the lives of Palmer, Nicklaus, and Woods is ruined by the author's insistence of sticking racism and sexism in your face.

Sounes uses a self-important journalistic style dripping with preconceptions. And this: A player uses a masturbatory grip on a golf club. Please ...

Sounes is hip and investigative - OK, I got it. No wonder personalities in the limelight avoid characters like Sounes posing as authors who demand their time, then produce drivel like this.

3 out of 5 stars Only One Knows.......2007-02-11

Only a racist can so incorrectly evaluate racism in golf and only a true sexist can incorrectly evaluate sexism in modern golf. Shame on Mr. Sounes for attempting to sully a great game with contrived evidence.

2 out of 5 stars I get it............2006-02-15

The game of golf is racist and sexist. I get it. In fact, I got it after the first twenty times Sounes whines about it.

5 out of 5 stars A good overview of a socially stratified pastime.......2005-07-24

Tartly written, well researched, and consistently entertaining, I can't believe this book ranks so low on Amazon's list right now. I've been a casual golf fan for a very long time and played golf as a kid on the course Tiger Woods grew up on (Meadowlark, in Huntington Beach), and I found Sounes' book well worth the read. As a Tiger "fan" myself, being almost a hometown boy, I found the book to have a great deal of verisimilitude and accuracy. In fact, I have a lot less respect for Tiger now than I did before. Then again, I can't imagine what it's like to have such celebrity thrust upon you before you've even had a chance to mature as a person.

Sounes really has the tart, dry British reporting style mastered. He is blunt and direct (humorous at times - check out the "heavily bosomed" comment about Phil Mickelson) and holds consistently to a theme in this book, which is that golf is truly a hidebound cultural phenomenon marked by a grimly maintained tradition of racism and elitism - and not just in America. Sounes marshals a large battery of evidence to buttress this view, and some of the information he unearths about golf clubs in the American South is just astounding. He also manages to cover pretty much every key golf event in the last 50 years in a compelling and entertaining manner. This is a remarkable achievement in his limited page count.

The book focuses on three primary personalities - Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger. The first two made themselves very available during the course of the book; in some ways they may regret having done so, as Sounes is not unsparing in his analysis and criticism. But surprisingly enough, Sounes saves his most stinging commentary for Tiger, and to some extent for his father, Earl Woods. Palmer and Nicklaus, despite their credentials as rock-ribbed Republicans, still come off as human beings. Tiger decidedly does not.

I won't go much further to avoid spoiling the book, but any open-minded golf fan really must read it. It's a minor classic. I feel that it's one of the few of its kind that actually comes from the real world, instead of being a hagiography. He sounds a little bit like Edward Gibbon, another English writer with a tart tongue regarding his subjects.

5 out of 5 stars A page-turning history of golf that stays with you.......2004-07-01

The story of men's professional golf since the 1950s is laid out in an easy-to-read, highly enjoyable style. The chapters are well-crafted, and lively and fun. The stories of the classic major tournaments are re-told in a fresh way, based on new interviews. But the heart of the book is what we don't usually learn about the likes of Palmer, Nicklaus and Woods (also Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Byron Nelson et al): the business deals, the politics, the personal lives. And some of these golfing heroes have feet of clay. Criticism is well-balanced and fair-minded, however, unless you happen to think pro' golf already has an open-handed attitude to women and ethnic minorities. Sounes obviously has a low opinion of the golf establishment, bodies like the PGA and PGA of America. But at the same time there is real affection here for the great tournaments and genuine appreciation of big characters like Arnie Palmer who are, whatever their faults, interesting men who have lived rich lives. Now I know exactly how rich.

    Book Description

Nelson Pereira dos Santos is the first book in English to provide a full critical discussion of the films of Latin America's most important living director. A leader of the Cinema Novo movement, dos Santos is responsible for some of Brazil's most socially important and artistically engaging movies. Through a discussion of his films Darlene J. Sadlier chronicles dos Santos's career -- his leftist committed cinema, his concern with the national and the popular, his chameleon style, his links to canonical Brazilian literature. She charts his moves from neo-realism to Godardian experimentation to a kind of popular realism and includes two highly informative interviews that reveal dos Santos's cultural, intellectual, and philosophical formation.

                      Book Description

Jazz is perhaps the most cerebral and most unpredictable of musical forms. Miles Davis transforms the simplest tune and structure into wildly imaginative improvisations. Thelonious Monk made dissonance glorious. And as Duke Ellington said, "Dissonance is our way of life in America. We are something apart, yet an integral part."
In Landing on the Wrong Note, Ajay Heble provides a groundbreaking analysis of jazz in its cultural context and a lucid exploration of the musical form itself: its dissonant riffs and resistance to traditional interpretations are emblematic of the social struggles surrounding the jazz scene and the people who created it. Drawing on personal anecdote, observation, conversations with jazz artists, and cultural theory, Heble demonstrates that although jazz may be free-form, its rich and varied history makes it an important point of entry into some of the most hotly contested issues of our era -- power, identity, representation, history, ethics, and social change. As artistic director of a jazz festival and noted critic, he has unique insight into the gap between critical interpretation and the reality of performance.
An imaginative and passionate synthesis of form and function, Landing on the Wrong Note goes beyond mainstream jazz criticism, outlining a new poetics of jazz that emerges not from the ivory tower but from the clubs, performances, and lives of today's jazz musicians.

The PC business is full of rags-to-riches stories. But perhaps none is as dramatic as the rise of Dell Computer. In Direct from Dell, founder and CEO Michael Dell tells how he started his company from a dorm room at the University of Texas with less than $1,000 and built it into an industry powerhouse with a market capitalization of well over $100 billion. What makes Dell Computer unique is not what it sells, but rather how it sells it. Dell was first in the PC industry to pioneer the direct-selling model, a method that competitors such as Compaq and Apple Computer are only now starting to embrace. By cutting out the intermediary and creating a direct link between manufacturer and customer, Dell was able to provide customers with computers that cost less and that were more apt to meet customer needs.

Direct from Dell is organized into two parts. The first recounts the history and the enormous growth of Dell Computer. The second part focuses on Dell's management approach, from developing customer focus to creating alliances with suppliers. The book manages to avoid most of the promotional and self-congratulatory air that seem to plague so many first-person CEO tomes. Anyone who has followed the PC industry or would like insight into Dell Computer's success should enjoy reading this book. Well written and easy to read. Recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

2 out of 5 stars interesting personal story but low value.......2006-12-18

Michael Dell tries to tell us how is company has been so successful and winds up writing an incredibly self serving biography even for a business man. It is so useless on information that it is amazing he got as many pages he did. Basically if you want to succeed in business you have to be brilliant like he is. While the direct to consumer model is very interesting his claim that he should be the sole possessor of it is ludicrous but what can you do. Read at your own risk.

4 out of 5 stars Useful insights from Dell's direct sales success story.......2006-11-06

If you are in the computer business, or in sales, you already know the Dell story. It's about a driven man, Michael Dell, who came up with a simple idea - direct sales - and then expanded his company into the world's second biggest manufacturer of personal computers. Dell's personal story is inseparable from the story of his company, and his book gives readers his unfiltered, first-person perspective. He covers his company's history, challenges, problems and successes in an unvarnished, matter-of-fact style. We highly recommend this book to anyone in the computer industry, to entrepreneurs and to managers who want to make their small businesses grow.

                        4 out of 5 stars Lessons from a leader.......2006-06-04

Its important to distinguish the book from the leader/company that is Dell. The company and the person are outstandingly awesome while the book is "just great"!! The first part of the book deals largely with a quasi-autobiographical-chronological account of the tale from the high school summer job of Michael Dell to the $30Billion company that is Dell. In this journey, we read about some of the core values that seems to enshrine the man and his company and get a glimpse of the critical twists and turns that made his company what it is.

In the second part of the book, we are treated to a bit of preaching - which is a different tone from the first part, but by now typically the reader is all in admiration for Dell & hence cant but resist to read each chapter and try to pick out the relevant bits to implement back in ones' own sphere of work. And that is where this book scores, some of the insights and lessons though straightforward, force the reader into contemplation.

                        Quite a brilliant read!

3 out of 5 stars Useful only if you want to know Dell's history.......2005-12-14

Two parts in the book: one for Dell Co. development, another for Dell's management.

I know Dell as it dominates the PC market for serveral years, and it seems that Dell is a few companies that can earn money in this low-return industry. When I studied Operation Management, I was taught Dell has been very successful by its DIRECT model and its stock flied and flied. Direct from Dell provdies the first hand information as it is written by Dell's chairman and CEO, Michael Dell, although I don't know how much is written by him.

It do let me know more about Dell's history and how Michael became rich, and, that's all. This is the first part of the book.

After reading a few pages in the second part, I lost interest. Dell talks about his management principles, but many of them could be found in management books--nothing special and not worth to read. So I stopped.

4 out of 5 stars I am following Michael Dell Path.......2005-09-13

I started my business a year ago and my aim is to become one of the world top businessmen next to Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Michael Dell and others.
I am facing many problems in my start-up business, after reading Direct from Dell i found out that Dell faced similar problems in his business. The book provided me with guidance, inspiration, and motivation to survive the bumpy ride of a new business.

                        Thank you Michael Dell...

                              Book Description

"Sam Houston was one of the most remarkable figures in American history. He was a native of Virginia who as a soldier, stateman, and adventurer made his mark on the frontier in Tennessee and the Arkansas Territory and then went on to dominate the early history of Texas. Now, drawing on newly accessible archival material, in particular the more than five thousand letters and documents in the Andrew Jackson Houston Collection of the Texas State Archives, historian Marshall De Bruhl vividly re-creates the career of this larger-than-life hero. In a narrative brimming with fascinating details, De Bruhl captures Houston in all his complexity.

A frontiersman who lived among the Cherokee Indians for many years - he was the adopted son of Chief Ooleteka and a full citizen of the Cherokee Nation - Houston became a passionate defender of Indian rights.

As a soldier, Sam Houston served under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 - and ensured Texas independence in 1836 with his atonishing victory over Santa Anna and the Mexican army at San Jacinto. As a politician, Houston was a Tennessee congressman at age thirty and then governor at age thirty-six. He then went on to be the first elected president of the Republic of Texas and one of the first senators from the new state. Because of his ardent defense of the Union and his refusal to swear allegiance to the Confederacy, he was deposed as governor of Texas in 1861.

Houston's personal life was as tumultous as his political and military careers. He married three times, always to much younger women. The first marriage, to an eighteen-year-old, ended mysteriously when she left him only eleven weeks later, whereupon he resigned the governership of Tennessee and fled to the west and exile among his old Cherokee friends. It was there he married Tiana, the beautiful niece of Chief Ooleteka. Years later, at age forty-six, he married a woman of twenty, who bore eight children during their devoted and happy marriage. Although Houston died ignored and vilified by those whose independence who had ensured, the eclipse of his reputation was brief. His fellow Texans soon acknowledged his central place in their history, and he is revered today as the father of Texas and [as] its greatest hero."

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating bio of hero and anti-hero.......2006-10-23

Sam Houston lived such a giant life that any bio will come up short, but De Bruhl gives a good summary of his many failures and successes, his sometimes-brilliant and sometimes-tarnished career in politics, and an insight into Sam's personal character. Cheered by some, reviled by others, Houston was a man who always lived by his convictions.

I was disappointed to see less of Sam's life among the Tsalagi, but readers looking for his legendary exploits in Texas will not be disappointed. I also recommend "The Raven" for more on Sam. Younger readers will appreciate "Retreat to Glory" and "Six Feet Six".

5 out of 5 stars Story of a Plain Man who inspite of Setbacks Rises Again.......2003-12-21

From a hero from Horseshoe Bend fighting against the Creeks, Houston emerges as a disciple of "Old Hickory" eventually becoming the governor of Tennessee. Although successful, during a run at re-election, the battle scared Houston marries a much younger and indulgent woman who from the honeymoon night on rejects Houston, which captures wide spread press and ruins his political career causing him to amazingly exile himself amongst the Cherokee. With bouts of alcohol, remarriage and political representation of the Cherokee, Houston is seemingly rescued by Jackson and motivated to immigrate to Texas. The author gives a very good representation of a successful man who shows great promise particularly his ability to communicate with the common folk yet he has serious personal liabilities. Houston becomes active in Texas politics but the fascinating story of Houston is his command of Texas forces fighting Santa Anna. Houston orders Travis and Bowie to abandon the Alamo due to Santa Anna's large army and heavy cannon preferring to fight with mobility in the field. They refuse and become famous but suffer complete loss. However, Houston's tactics prove effective as he attains victory over Anna. Again active in politics, Houston stubbornly refuses to support secession while governor and is a pariah among his fellow Texans. Interesting story of a humble man who lived in such plain dwellings with dog runs in Texas. Very much a worthwhile read.

                              3 out of 5 stars Disappointingly superficial.......2000-10-10

This quick and easy read is an entertaining biography of an entertaining and important man. But I finished it feeling we had glossed over the surface of General Sam without really getting under his skin. This was a decent introduction to the man and his times, but the serious student will be left wanting more.

4 out of 5 stars Good Biography of Sam Houston.......2000-09-17

This book captures Sam Houston quite well. It is much better than John Hoyt Williams' Sam Houston, published around the same time. Houston was the George Washington of Texas: commander-in-chief of the Texan army when Texas won its independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto, first president of the Republic of Texas, governor when Texas became a state. Houston had a theatrical flair and obviously succeeded in becoming a larger-than-life historical giant.

As impressive as his historical achievements were, what makes Houston fascinating to me are two things. First was the fact that he ran away from home at age 16 to live with a band of Cherokees. He was adopted by the chief of the tribe, who gave him the name Kalanu, or "The Raven." Houston left the tribe when he was 19, but returned to live with the tribe on other occasions when he was fleeing white civilization, most notably when he returned 20 years later and married Tiana (or Diana), a prominent member of the tribe. A fascinating novel about Tiana and her relationship with Houston is Walk In My Soul, by Lucia St. Clair Robson.

A second fascinating aspect of Houston's life was his relationship with Eliza Allen, a white woman Houston married in 1829. The marriage lasted only a few months, at which time Allen fled Houston to return home to her parents. Neither she nor Houston ever revealed the reason for their breakup, but it destroyed Houston's political career in Tennessee, led directly to his going back to live with the Cherokees and marry Tiana, and eventually to his going to Texas. Elizabeth Crook's novel, "The Raven's Bride," is a compelling speculative account of what might have happened.

Sword of San Jacinto is a good, readable overview of the life of one of the most fascinating characters in American history.

I could not put this book down! I like ol' Sam Houston. Being a member of the Masonic Order as was Houston and knowing that Sam Houston was a big factor in the forming of the Grand Lodge of Texas, I wish Mr. DeBruhl had visitied the Republic of Texas Room in the Grand Lodge of Texas Museum in Waco, Texas. I live in Nacogdoches, Texas and work only a few steps from were Sam Houston lived and across the street from were the Old Stone Fort once was. You can look East and see the house were Anna Raguet lived. Across the street was the office of Thomas J. Rusk. This book came real close to home for me, I liked it.

                                1. Colin Gary's book titled 'Leverage of Sea Power' is first book of the author on maritime affairs. This book is a classical work propounding the effect the Sea Power has had on the events in history, ancient and modern. The painstaking research and logical flow of this work stands out.

                                2. The author has been successful in establishing the fact that there has been no land power, what so ever, which could achieve lasting success in strategic statecraft without having its own Sea Power or Sea Power of its allies. Thus bringing out very clearly, the leverage, presence and availability of Sea Power can provide in warfare, right from the age of galley warfare to World Wars.

                                3. The book examines the issue in more than adequate depth and succeeds in making the point very clear. However, this being research based book, the chapters do get little drawn out and tend to make the reader loose interest. A little more stress on the explanation of concepts with reduction in repeated examples (though I must admit, if one has to prove that the concepts of leverage of sea power applied in all times and types of conflicts, such examples are necessary) would have helped capture a non-academic but interested reader's interest through out the book.

                                4. A book backed with painstaking research. Worth reading, but a reader has to put in efforts to retain focus on the thoughts presented in the book.
