Book Description
The first volume of the three-volume Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence draws on a wide range of documentary and oral sources, many of them hitherto unpublished, to reveal a complex portrait of an extraordinary man. It describes his upbringing in a small colliery town in Nottinghamshire, his years spent as a teacher and his disastrous sexual experiments with Jessie Chambers, Helen Corke and Alice Dax; provides a radical new account of his early relationship with Frieda Weekley, Lawrence’s ‘woman of a life-time’; and ends with the completion of his great autobiographical novel Sons and Lovers. This volume has already established itself as the most complete and authoritative account available. The second volume of the acclaimed Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence covers the years 1912–22, the period in which Lawrence forged his reputation as one of the greatest and most controversial writers of the twentieth century. During this period Lawrence produced the trio of novels with which he was to revolutionise English fiction over the next decade. It was a painful process: Sons and Lovers was crudely cut by its publisher; The Rainbow was destroyed by court order and Women in Love took almost three years to find a publisher. Drawing on memoirs, oral recollections, and unpublished manuscript material, this volume opens a new perspective on the central period of Lawrence’s life and literary career. It deals squarely with the vexed issue of his personal life but above all it reveals the triumph of Lawrence’s art during a decade of extraordinary trials in which he established himself as the most innovative and notorious novelist of his generation. The final volume of the Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence chronicles his progress from leaving Europe in 1922 to his death in Venice in 1930. Based on much new or unfamiliar material, it describes his travels in Ceylon, Australia, the USA and Mexico in an increasingly desperate search for an ideal community. With his return to Europe in 1925, there is a detailed account of his rediscovery of painting, his battle against censorship, and the vitality with which he resisted the debilitating effects of tuberculosis. Kangaroo, The Plumed Serpent and Lady Chatterley’s Lover are usually seen as the literary landmarks of these years; but Lawrence also wrote remarkable novellas, essays, criticism, short stories and poems. Lawrence is revealed here not as the impotent and self-obsessed figure of popular legend, but as a man more complex, more humorous, and more exemplary in his resolute grappling with the central problems of life and death.

Book Description
If Peter Bogdanovich did not already exist, Hollywould would perhaps have invted him. The son of struggling but cultured immigrant parents, he grew up on Manhattan's West Side and soon developed a passion for that other world of film and theatre. By his early twentites he had already acted in, directed and produced plays off-Broadway and written about film for major newspapers and magazines. Then, married, he made his way to Hollywood, gaining attention first for Targets and then three years later for the award-winning modern classic, The Last Picture Show. Suddently he was a hot director and What's Up, Doc and the enormously successful Paper Moon soon followed.

The most unbiased account of Dorothy Stratten.......2000-04-12
If you are interested in the life and death of 1980's slain Playboy Playmate of the Year, Dorothy Stratten, more than half of this book is devoted to her. Not only does it include the important role she played in Bogdanovich's life, but it is a descriptive "biography within a biography". I highly recommend this book on that account, even more so than Bogdanovich's biography of her, "The Killing of the Unicorn." The reason being that Andrew Yule uses unbiased evidence to describe the cirucumstanses of her incredibly amazing, but tragically short life. It also gives the LAPD account of her gruesome murder, which according to Mr. Yule is not accurate in the "Killing of the Unicorn". If you saw the recent television biography of Dorothy Stratten and you want to know more, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Very Helpful.......2006-01-08
I'm a new call center manager and this book did a great job of explaining a lot of the basics. I was even able to share the technology section with my IT department so they could understand how to better support the needs of our department. Plus my staff fought over the book - because the information was in an easy to read/understand format.
Great overview of the call center operation.......2005-07-21
If you are like me, in business related to call centers, but not really in call center business, this book is the one. After reading it, I got a new level of appreciation for the processes and complexity involved.
First part describes business aspect, goals, variables and how they influence goals. That's the part where I said, "It's not as simple as it seems".
Next one, on technology, gives you a review of supporting technologies. I personally knew most of the stuff, but it's a light reading and gives you a perspective how the call center views the technology.
Final two parts, on managing agent performance and call handling are valuable reading no matter what business you're in. Suggestions from the book can be applied outside of call centers, as well. And call handling... I think every employee that has a phone on their desk is the company's representative and should know how to handle calls. Dealing with angry customers, controlling the call, sales... it all goes beyond just call centre agents.
To summarize, if you want to get the big picture, see all the elements, understand them and understand how they interact, this is where you should start. Doesn't dwell too much on any individual subject (and doesn't go too much in-depth) and therefore, it is an easy informative reading. And that's what books from Dummies series are all about, aren't they?

Book Description
Was Princess Diana murdered? Or was she the victim of an innocent though tragic traffic Accident? If she was murdered, who did it? Who ordered the assassination and what were the motives behind it?
Based on information received from a veteran CIA contract agent one week prior to the crash in Paris - plus further evidence obtained from other highly placed sources, this investigative work presents an uncompromising inquiry into Diana's death.
The Authors are not just `conspiracy theorists.' They are investigative journalists with a proven track record, who dare to investigate issues side stepped by other journalists, and whose courageous work uncovered staggering evidence of a high-level conspiracy between British and U.S. Intelligence to assassinate Diana.
Endorsed by many highly placed intelligence & government sources, this book reveals the frightening truth: How British and U.S. Intelligence monitored Diana's every move;
How two secret letters written by Diana just before her death implicate the British Crown in "nefarious activities in Africa", specifically Angola;
How Diana threatened to expose the Crown's vested interests in Angola by pursuing her 'landmines campaign' in that country;
Why MI6 and the CIA resolved to kill her "on foreign soil";
How both Secret Services favored the 'traffic accident' as a deniable means of assassination; how this same method had been successful in previous 'deniable ops''; how the crash evidence was methodically suppressed, as was the info. on: the conspirators who planned, carried out and covered up this operation;
How chauffeur Henri Paul worked for MI6; how his blood sample -which underpins the 'drunk-driver accident' theory -was switched; and how all TV cameras at the crash scene were mysteriously switched off.
This thoroughly researched book reveals the shocking truth behind Diana's death. And in the process it exposes the most scandalous, closely guarded secret in the UK's history.
Customer Reviews:
The Prosecution Lost the Case.......2007-02-16
The book was written in the form of a trial and the reader is the jury. Well, if I was on that jury, I would have voted for the defense. And if I was the judge, I would have thrown the case out after the prosecution finished his case for lack of evidence. The title is perfect "Hidden Evidence" as the evidence was so hidden that I couldnt find it in the book. The author makes many hypothesis but does not have any REAL support for his hypothesis.
I believe that we have not heard the full and real story of the death of Diana and was hoping to find it here - but I was disappointed. Stay clear.
Diana was murdered........2005-09-19
My beloved Princess Diana was most definitely murdered by the Establishment. This book gives hard facts to support this statement and points out inconsistencies within the investigation, both in France and England. Assasinations like this have been going on since the beginning of time, since John the Baptist. If you loved Princess Diana you must read this book. It will make you so sad to realize what was done to her.
Tepid drivel.......2003-09-15
Oh, for God's sake! What utter drivel. Diana wasn't bright enough to implicate anyone more substantial than a poorly trained manicurist.
Here's a conspiracy question to think about -- if Diana was so committed to the anti-landmines issue why did she chose Dodi Fayed as a consort? Some of his relations are huge arm dealers. Hey -- maybe THEY knocked her off!
Unbeliveably Chilling!! A must read book ~~.......2003-06-28
I couldn't put this book down. The facts that were found out about Princess Diana's death, I believe all of them. I always felt that something wasn't right about the "so called accident".After reading this book,I have no doubt that her own family { I won't mention any names},were involved in shall we say, getting the Princess out of the way. I knew that the Windors' disliked Princess Diana, but to go that far.This book gave me the chills learning that not only the British Establishment and the CIA, had something to do with her untimely death.And talk about a BOTCHED investigation!! To say the least, and now I know why.The people involved with her death and that of the others,{ofcourse Henri Paul signed his own death certificate unbeknowst to himself}.They will never be found. How sad.But there are some in the Royal House of Windsor that really know what happened.But I don't think this bothers them at all.The investigative reporters that worked so hard putting this book together for the public to decide what really happned.Truely conviced me that this was NOT an accident, that of a drunk driver and the so called Popparazzi.The mysterious Fiat Uno,the rescue team that worked on Princess Diana, in my eyes,let her die there at the crash site.And I believe they were in on this as well.I would reccomend this book to anyone that wants to really know the cold hard and truthful facts about her senseless,premetitaded death.From front to back, you won't be able to put this book down.
Big Brother is watching us.......2003-01-22
It is not a book that will make people feel safe about the world around them but it does tell, with an incredible amount of research, what probably happened re the death of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. So many questions unanswered by the enquiry after her death, so many facts swept under the carpet as well. There probably will be an epilogue to this book (needed as far as I am concerned) when the American Tapes of Diana's telephone conversation will come to light. Those who have listened to them (as reported in the Sunday Express of June 23, 2002) were amazed to hear, from Diana's own lips, that she was both pregnant and was going to marry Dodi Fayed. Can you imagine the establishment in Britain having to bow to a half British Egyptian child, brought up in the Muslim Faith, who could say in the future 'The King, my Brother'. I doubt it. The landmines campaign is also an eye opener (British/American military interests in danger). Murdered, of course she was. She was not the first, nor will she be the last. A word of caution to HRH Prince Michael of Albany. By standing for the truth, he, too, might find the dark forces in Britain (to quote the Queen) conspiring against him. Altogether, an excellent informative read that should raise a few eyebrows in high place.

Book Description
The Hawker Typhoon, or 'Tiffy', as it was affectionately known, was not an easy aircraft to fly. As fighter ace Desmond Scott described it: "Whereas the Spitfire always behaved like a well-mannered thoroughbred on first acquaintance, the Typhoon always reminded me of a low-bred carthorse whose pedigree had received a sharp infusion of hotheaded sprinter's blood."
Norman Franks has talked to the men who piloted this powerful seven-ton rocket-firing fighter in World War II, and from his interviews has emerged a very personal, often colorful and dramatic, view of what it was really like to fly over Holland or France at low level, seeking out hostile aircraft or targets on the ground; to roll over at 12,000 feet, then upside down, roar down into an inferno of flak to dive bomb an enemy position; to attack trains, ships, flak posts, tanks; to fire lethal 60-lb high explosive rockets into enemy trucks, radar or V1 sites; and also to undergo the mind-numbing experience of crash-landing a shot-up Tiffy. It is a lively, action-packed story of conflict in the air.
By 1944, with the Typhoon now legendary and firmly established within the ranks of the Second Tactical Air Force, and playing a pivotal role in the victory in the air and on the ground, the author follows the fortunes of the pilots and ground crews in the heated battles over the Normandy beachhead, the breakout into France, the triumph at Fallacies, operations from Holland, in the Ardennes and finally into Germany itself.
Customer Reviews:
A Typhoon that's something of a Tempest.......2004-08-07
Typhoon Attack describes the development and history of the Hawker Typhoon and the men who flew her. The author does a very good job telling us about the development of the Typhoon and the teething problems the pilots experienced. This is followed by the early employment of the aircraft and veterans stories of their experiences with the plane thru the different campaigns of WWII. The writer does a very good job of using his descriptions of historical events to bring up the memories of pilots. Overall, a good read for those interested in Hawker Typhoons and the often forgotten world of Interdiction.
Book Description
Introduces the concepts and vocabulary of Comparative Politics through a country-by-country analysis and recent case studies. By demonstrating that political life is universal and comparable, the text also proves that no country is really alien, but rather that all countries are understandable. Identifies the key institutions , political culture and patterns of interaction in Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, China, Brazil, South Africa and Iran. For individuals interested in understanding the inner workings of 9 major, contemporary political systems.
Customer Reviews:
opinionated.......2007-06-02
While there is some good analysis in this textbook, there is a lot of unsupported opinion and flat out falsities. The author has some personal analysis that he does not support at all. I'll use the section on Russia as an example.
At points he groups entire peoples into categories, saying for instance that Russians like authoritarianism.
The author brings personal opinion into the text, saying that "it is not clear that had Lenin lived he would have been any better than Stalin." He also claims that Marxism is basically dead. On Marxism, he claims that the bourgeoisie are the middle class and that because the the middle class has grown in developed countries and done well, Marxists are wrong. Does he not know that the bourgeoisie in Marxism mean the class that profits from production but does not produce, meaning a tiny minority NOT including the vast majority of the middle class!!
Excellent service and product is as described.......2006-11-10
Excellent service and product received was as described. Thanx will do business again.
A good concept.......2005-02-26
You won't find this book generally in the bookstore, unless you're in the college bookstore, looking on the shelf marked 'Required'. Most likely you would never want to read this book even if it was required. Flipping through the table of contents and the pages, it screams textbook. It even has vocabulary words at the end of each chapter. How much more dry, dull, and boring can you get?
Fr. Kurt, what are you doing reviewing this book? Don't tell us you're actually going to recommend this book to us!? Please don't tell us that!!
Yes, I recommend this book.
Sorry. I have an undergraduate degree in political science, have taught political science, and have a large collection of sample texts that I have been sent in hopes that I would teach some large 400-student introductory politics class and use the book. Most of these books have been traded for more worthwhile books at the local used book stores. This book, however, 'Countries & Concepts: An Introduction to Comparative Politics', by Michael Roskin, is one that I had to purchase. And I've used it in earlier editions. And I shall again in this and later editions.
Despite the textbook-layout (which is in fact fine, if one wants a textbook, and only a minor inconvenience if one does not), this is an insightful, informative, clearly-written text, with a much broader range that goes into deeper detail than most of its type. This is why I use it.
This is a text for those who have already had American politics -- I didn't want to rehash the first-semester material, so I chose a book that did not have an American section or chapter. If I were to choose a more complete volume, I would consider that a minus.
Roskin begins with a chapter on general political concepts. He explores concepts such as left, right, and centre designations (and how these vary, or are similar, in different contexts); historical data that is necessary for understanding, patterns of interaction, political attitudes and ideologies, and finally, my favourite chapters in each section, 'What People Quarrel About'.
Roskin has major sections on Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, China, Brazil, and South Africa. In each section he examines the key institutions of government and society (not always the same things), impact of the past, political attitudes, interactions, and the quarrels. For instance, racism pops up as a quarrel in different countries, but has different dimensions. Nationalism might be strong in one country, and not in another. The attitudes toward wealth and wealth distribution are common quarrels, although the mechanisms and conclusions are different.
The quarrel sections always provide the best material for class discussions, particularly as students bring their own issues up. This is what, in the end, comparative politics is all about.
I applaud this book for breaking out of the European-only model of comparative politics. I appreciate that Africa and South America are included (often overlooked in major political survey texts). While it is still European-dominated (as is the general course of international politics in the world today), it echoes the diversity inherent in the world.
The text is filled with sidebars of interest, and yes, if you care to, you can even do the vocabulary tests at the end. Each chapter has a bibliography for further reading. The book tends to be updated every three-to-four years, so that it is not out of date.
Let me know when to set the date for your examination...
Great oversight on comparative politics........2001-11-05
I am using this book for my comparative politics class at Case Western, and unlike most of my textbooks, this text is actually interesting to read.
The book gives excellent coverage on the general ideas without going to deep into detail for most people. Once you read this book you will understand British, French, German, and Japanese politics better than you did before. I came out knowing more than I thought I would.
However, there is no colour in this book at all. The pictures and illustrations are completely black and white, except for some red highlights at the beginning of the chapters. That seems to be my only problem with the book.
The book goes into the political systems of each of the individual countries stated before, but Roskin also goes into the reasons behind the political systems in place. History, geography and cultural effects are discussed in easy to follow ways, both logically and structurally.
This is an excellent reference for any history or political science student, or for anyone looking to learn more. That's why I am recommending this book.
