Amazing Story.......2007-09-11

I suppose like a lot of other people I started reading Mario Puzo book the Godfather and just loved the story. I wasn't happy with "The Silician", but I was surprised by this book: "The Fortunate Pilgrim". For a brief summary, this is the story of Lucia Santa an immigrant from Italy living in New York City during the 1930's. Lucia has six children and a bad marriage. Mario Puzo descriptions of the section known as Hells Kitchen are amazing and his detail of the city and hardships that Lucia must endure is awesome. Overall, this book turned out to be one of my favorite Mario Puzo novels and I would highly recommend it.

Puzo's favorite, with good reason........2007-07-18

Although it doesn't have the most compelling start, it doesn't take long to warm up to the family in 'The Fortunate Pilgrim'. This is a sad account of early 1900s America, when being an immigrant was noble instead of criminal. Mario Puzo truly brings their suffering and hardships to life. If you've read 'The Godfather' you could be forgiven for thinking this will be a story of a family's fierce loyalty to each other, despite their shared poverty. Not so. Relationships are strained, affections grow and wither, bonds are strengthened and severed. Like animals, they have to keep fighting the cruel uncertainty of poverty. Puzo dispenses with all sentiment; in order to be sentimental, there has to be some good times along the way. And time is not kind to many of these characters. I've read a couple of entertaining but ultimately shallow Mario Puzo novels ('The Fourth K' and 'Fools Die'), but I won't soon forget the sadness of 'The Fortunate Pilgrim'.

Moving story of an Italian family where the woman holds the power.......2007-04-26

Enjoyed THE FORTUNATE PILGRIM by Mario Puzo, written before
THE GODFATHER . . . this one also looks at the Italian-American
experience, but from the perspective of a family where the woman
holds the power.

I was moved by the story of Lucia Santa and her journey from the
mountain farms of Italy to the streets of New York . . . she hoped
for a better life, but instead found herself living in Hell's Kitchen
and in a bad marriage where she had to raise six children
on her own.

Their lives also fascinated me, as did Puzzo's description of
what like was life in the twenties, thirties and forties . . . it made
me feel like I was actually there--right with the characters.

After the novel was over, I wondered how come it never was
made into a major movie . . . I did found out that THE FORTUNATE
PILGRIM was instead made into a TV mini-series in 1988, starring
Sophia Loren and Edward James Olmos . . . so I now know what
I'll be watching when I rent my next DVD!

An Extraordinary Compilation of Stories.......2007-04-05

This book kept me up for several nights straight. It is not a long book by any means and the average reader can go cover-to-cover in a few hours. However, one WILL find one or two things they missed upon every subsequent reading of the book.

This book is not written by a "Hard-Core" fisherman. Rather, it is the story of a "Hard-Core" fisherman. Mr. Cinquemani, a former NYC English teacher employs his grasp of the English language and writes in a way that is not only understandable, but entertaining to his readers. While the book is about fishing, it is not a "How-to" book and Mr. Cinquemani's choice to not focus on the technical aspect of fishing (i.e. equipment, knots, strategy), combined with his writing skills, does not leave one feeling empty upon the first completion of the book, or all subsequent completions for that matter.

Night Tides is about Billy "The Greek" Legakis, a legend in the striped bass fishing world. It is the story of this man's ongoing pursuit for the "Largest" striped bass. Stories of this man's introduction to this fish, his obsession with this fish, and his unparalleled pursuit of this fish grace the pages of this book. Several pictures are also included in the book, adding to the whole experience.

Having read the book several times, I am not only astonished by the sometimes unbelievable accomplishments of this particular fisherman, but grateful that the paths of these two gentlemen crossed when it did. While the stories of "The Greek" are truly amazing, without Mr. Cinquemani's abilities, these stories may very well have been untold. My utmost gratitude to Mr. Cinquemani and Mr. Legakis for choosing to share their stories with the rest of the world.

Interesting Read.......2007-01-26

The book is a very easy read. BTG is a unique man with a true obsession with the straiped bass and the sea. A great book if you are not a fisherman and an even better one if you are. I let a buddy borrow it and he is not a fisherman. He is three quarters finished on the second day of his read. Go for it!

A quick read for anyone who enjoys catching a few "Strippahs" from their local haunts. Billy has certainly mastered the art of catching the big ones, but it also comes at a price - Fishing is 1st - everything else, I mean everything else comes after. Catching 2,500 fish with a rod during a slow season was mind boggling to me, I had to do the math twice and was sure there was an extra zero in the numbers, but low and behold this guy is a true master of the species.

It was an inspiration to read and even got me up in the middle of the nite to go for the cows under a full moon and a high tide - I got skunked and humbled.

A great gift with some terrific photos.

If you are a striped bass fisherman, this book will not let you down. I read it in 2 days. Eccentrics like Billy make life interesting. On a sad note, I can't imagine what it must have been like to fish back in the 60's and 70's before we wiped out the majority of these monster bass.

Bible for LA survival.......2006-12-01

As a working actor for most of my life, I can attest to the fact that of all the "how to" books on the market this book is truly a must have, especially if you are new to the LA market. Here you will find the best/cheapest/chicest etc place to (fill in the blank) get your nails done, get your photos copied, find a computer etc. It won't make you a better actor but it can help you survive in a tough city so that you can spend your energies improving your craft. I offer this advice as someone who recurred on 11 series including Seinfeld and Home Improvement and what is very nice now is that this book used to cost upwards of 125 new (I never owned a new copy but always one two years out of date! ) and now is just the price of a regular book. Combine this book with Judy Kerr's Acting is Everything and you are ready to begin to ask the eternal question "How do I get an agent"?

The channeling companion has some new relions and a few new professions but not many. There are alot of new training packages and spells included in this companion. If you like playing priests or other religious characters then the channeling companion is a MUST.

Experiential Learning.......2007-03-08

I recommend this book to people using experiential exercises to teach. I used one of the exercises from this book in a workshop and the students both had fun and got the insights. I have read many of the exercises and plan to use them as I develop workshops that center around conflict. In any case, the exercises are well designed. You'll get the purpose of the exercise and what it's intended to teach, equipment needed (e.g. handout or flipchart), precise directions for the students, what to expect, and insights to share for group learning. The book errs on giving you more information that you probably need to carry out the exercise.

Finally a good book in business games.......2007-01-12

I have bought many books with hundreds of business games. Unlike the rest of the books I have read, it goes beyond the games, it gives you not only the materials and explanation on how it works but tells you what you may say and the theory behind the game. It also has different options for putting your own agenda depending on the time you have available and give you external resources.

The "Conflict and Communication Activity Book" is an excellent resource for trainers and facilitators in any organization. I particularly liked how Withers and Lewis formatted the book, defining up front the purpose as well as the equipment, prep and time needed for each specific exercise. The clear instructions and helpful advice provided for each activity make them a breeze for any professional to use. Well done!! As I read through it the first time, I found myself book-marking several of the activities to make a point of trying in the near future. I long ago arrived at the conclusion that no organization will EVER stop dealing with conflict and communication issues. They're universal. Thanks for giving me thirty more creative exercises to include in my bag of tricks!!

I enjoyed and related to some of the stories, having my own somewhat sordid past to own up to. I also thought the book was well-written. But the life the author lived is also full of things that only lots of money can buy... nannies, constant psychotherapy, lots of plastic surgery, among other things. Her story is hard at times for us middle class folk in "flyover country" to relate to.

A Cautionary Tale, and an Old Sad Story.......2006-05-30

While the cast of characters in this story whirling around Ms. Hayt, the protagonist, are the overly educated, upwardly mobile denizens of New York City and its suburbs; with the fast-talking and the intellectualism and all eyes focused on seats of power; this memoir, in the final analysis, details a old sad story, and it's this:

That if you don't understand in your gut that lasting love and fulfillment in this life comes from the giving and not from the getting, you will wind up alone and feeling unlovable which will keep you alone.

Lasting love begins by selectively allowing other people all the way in to your very soul -- that means finding others who you believe may be worthy, evaluating whether they seem to have some real interest in knowing who you really are, and then gradually revealing your most private inner thoughts and dreams and cares and woes to those people, and then evaluating, by their words and actions, whether they really do care. If they do, you will feel cared about, and the feeling that you are cared about is so unbelievably wonderful that it will inspire you to allow those selected individuals in even further. This trust of allowing others in is the highest form of giving, which will engender trust from those people, and they will allow you in. And this is the way bonding happens, spirits intertwine, and love happens. And then you don't need lots of food, drugs, gambling, booze, etc., etc. to feel alive, because you'll have the real thing, which is true love, which really means feeling deeply cared about by another and knowing that the other person feels deeply cared about by you. Again, it doesn't come from running around trying to please others. Anyone can spread their legs. Anyone can learn to make gourmet dinners. There's no giving in that; there is no exposure of self in that; there's no trust in that. To get the fulfilling, lasting love, you must allow others all the way in and trust that the frightened, scarred, insecure, and highly imperfect soul inside you is wonderfully lovable as is. This is the old story that has always been true, and memoir will tell you what happens to people who don't understand this very fundamental emotional truth.

Honi soit qui mal y pense!.......2006-05-25

I greatly enjoyed this book, avidly turning the pages to see what would happen next as it hurtled towards its not-happy but smart and true-to-life ending. Although much of the author's behavior is not what genteel society would call, er, edifying, the self-awareness with which it is described (particularly from a psychoanalytical point of view, e.g., pleasing the father, narcissism, emotional insecurity, etc.) exposes human drives that many share but most bury under layers of good manners and that indefatigable will to please. Hayt is unsparing towards herself, almost self-destructive in her candor, and we are the beneficiaries. She also has a natural way with words, and linguistic gems lie everywhere, often adorning less than pretty entanglements. But even when things are their worst, her delicious sense of humor lightens her experiences, which are those of someone who has gone out on a limb, often and dangerously, while yearning for shelter. Yes, a tale of ambiguity, playing everywhere.

Brutal Candor.......2006-04-11

I have noticed that there is a lack of objectivity in the skill set of reviewers when it comes to covering the quality of the book. Memoirs are supposed to be candid, that's why we enjoy them so much- we can peep into another's possibly lurid encounters. I can detach myself enough to not insist on either deifying nor defending the author! That being said-the author does not spare any effort to tell the whole nasty truth- look no further than the sub title to see her use that same word to describe her tale.I was actually admiring her for parts of the journey , and I almost feel sorry for her at times because she is so self absorbed and opportunistic- especially when it comes to her immediate family- I won't "spoil the ending", but it seems the key players finally become Un clueless after all is said and done. The major defect in her character is that she is sort of chilly, hedonistic, definitely unsympathetic and not cuddly- how could a man fell safe around her? I really enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down, like her or not she is brave brash and witty- and much too candid for her own good

Honest and funny! .......2006-04-03

i bought this book after reading hayt's weekly new york post column. her writing is witty and charming while having to-the-heart observational quality. she never has a problem skewering herself when it's to the point.

i thoroughly enjoyed hayt's anecdotes and analysis of her journey through love's highs and emotional pitfalls. being a young divorcee myself, her story really resonated. it was like reading a story about myself with the names and facts changed for anonymity's sake.

she tackles cringeworthy "forbidden" issues, giving voice to the dark side of unhappy marriages and relationships. how many couples are willing to admit to a sexless marriage? and yet it's an emotional affliction that needs to be addressed. only elizabeth hayt has the guts to look it in the face and publically admit her share of the blame.

you can tell she's spent a lot of time in psychotherapy. and her book shares some of her newfound insights. you can feel her character pouring forth from the pages. while she wants to fix her problems and mistakes, she is often powerless to make changes -- a prisoner of insecurities and fear. she's only human.

What facts untold and blind to the American population is that Nelson Mandela needed not to turn to the United States for aid in the battle for the spread of white supremacy because the leaders of the United States had already taken a side in this battle.
The side of inhumanity.

What is often not known is the truth in whom supported South Africa and funded South Africa in its spread of Apartheid, The United States of America. Knowingly, under the Presidency/Administration of Ronald Reagan.

There is a reason as to why Fidel Castro opposes Capitalism and United States methods:

1.Capitalism is a system unfit for humanity and is impossible to succeed globally as many people blindly and ignorantly believe. If this was truth, then why do we witness United States presence in so many countries world-wide, yet their economy and way of life has yet to improve under United States authority and rule? It is up to you to stand on the side of human beings, analyze communism, and stay on a base of neutrality until you begin to find out the truth of how this world has been functioning in all time leading to now.

2.The support for Apartheid is among the many inhumane acts the United States has participated in, in the last 200 years, both within the nation and outside the nation.

3.It was under United States aid to former dictator of Cuba Fulgencio Batista that all of Cuba was run by a corrupt mob-authority that constantly brutalized the Cuban population. All wealth from Cuba was directed to the United States and not enough to the people of Cuba whom it belonged to. Cuba was a third world nation before the start of the Cuban Revolution and is still one today, but the improvements and continued improvements are remarkable. Cuba would be ever more successful...well tremendously more succesful if the United States dropped its 40[I believe] year illegal economic blockade on Cuba which is against the Geneva conventions and which has been voted several times in the United Nations as a cruel policy which is genocidal. Most recently, in the U.N., 173 countries voted against it while 3 voted for it. This economic blockade is no way to bring THE PRESIDENT OF CUBA to his knees. It affects entirely the citizens of Cuba. The United States does this so that in hopes to crush the Cuban Revolution because it inspires other third world nations to rid themselves of cruel rule and imperial control and because it wants Cuba to become once again, a slave to the interest of the United States.

Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela together in Cuba, not simply celebrating the victory of the South African Freedom struggle, not simply celebrating the continued life of the Cuban revolution, but speaking the truth about how the oppressed of the world can fight,can struggle, can win.

Just the idea that this little book exists, let alone its stirring, intelligent words, reminds me that though the battles have been tough, working people fighting like these two fighters can win.

Nelson, Si! Fidel, No!.......2001-06-27

Interesting pamphlet from a joint appearance of Nelson mandela and Fidel Castro in Cuba in 1991. Mandela's purpose is clear, to thank the Cubans for their support in African freedom struggles and this he does, educating people of the Cuban role in support of the ANC, Angola, and the Congo (via Che Guevara, all sides conveniently forgetting how Castro double-crossed Che).

Then we hear from Fidel. Same old stuff about US Imperialism, Cuba will never surrender to capitalism, etc. etc. If you hear/read one Fidel speech, you've heard 'em all. Read that aspect of it just to see for yourself.
