5 out of 5 stars And they say snowboarders are a bad element..........2004-01-03

Warren Miller, in his youth, is here shown to have been a criminal genius. Poaching, trespassing, littering, sneaking onto chairlifts, and running over prize hens. And let's not go into how they thawed out their car engine.

I found my old grandfather's first edition copy of this seminal text by consummate ski bum Warren Miller. I give it six stars, reduced to five, because this book is entirely too short. It's hilarious, packed cover-to-cover with Miller's dry, matter-of-fact storytelling. If you've seen enough of his films, you can even read the whole thing in Warren's voice.

If you fancy yourself a ski bum, read this and learn just how far you have to go in enduring privations before you'll stack up against Warren Miller.

      5 out of 5 stars A Warren Miller Classic.......2001-01-13

What a great tale - the story detailing the beginnings of the ultimate ski bum! I thoroughly enjoyed Warren's recounting of his early days. While fun and light, this book communicates his passion for skiing and all it involves. My only complaint is that the book is way to short!

Noted film critic and essayist Molly Haskell has assembled some of her finest articles of the past 20 years into a cohesive collection focusing on the roles women play on film and in the film business. Holding My Own in No Man's Land features essays on Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Doris Day, and other actresses; thoughtful pieces on literary characters such as Jane Austen's Emma; and a section entitled "Guys," which features a profile of Truman Capote and a surprising and thoughtful essay based on an interview with John Wayne. As one of America's finest writers on film, Haskell's collection of essays is a must for those who regard film as something worth thinking about.

            Book Description

Molly Haskell, one of America's leading film critics, has been delighting readers for decades with her intelligence and insight. Her landmark book, From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies, praised for its "wit and style" and called "a valuable contribution to film scholarship," is still considered among the most stimulating and important books on the subject of women and film. In Holding My Own in No Man's Land, a series of pieces written in the twenty years since the publication of From Reverence to Rape, Haskell once again explores the relationship between women and men, and between the movies and those who watch them. Haskell remains a controversial figure in both feminist and film circles, accused of "uncritically celebrating heterosexual romance"--a charge to which Haskell cheerfully pleads guilty. Holding My Own In No Man's Land challenges the conventional feminist wisdom that the classic films of the Thirties, Forties, and Fifties were made by a male-dominated industry which reduced women to objects of the "male gaze." Instead, she says that women were better served by the notoriously tyrannical studio system than they are in the "newer, freer, hipper Hollywood of the present." A fascinating interview with Doris Day points out that, despite her current image as a symbol of all that was repressive about the suburban Fifties, she played a series of roles as--and was herself--a successful career woman who worked because she enjoyed it. In another perceptive portrait, Haskell describes the mesmerizing power the sultry, self-parodying sex symbol Mae West had on screen, and the financial clout she had off screen. And she writes about Howard Hawks's screwball comedies, such as His Girl Friday and Man's Favorite Sport from the Thirties, where assertive women were equal to men, and more than held their own in the battle of the sexes. Holding My Own in No Man's Land ranges from interviews with Hollywood legends such as Gloria Swanson and John Wayne, to celebrations of the comic verve of Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, to ruminations on literary figures such as Truman Capote and his Holly Golightly, and Jane Austen's Emma. We learn that the cleaning woman of The Carol Burnett Show logo was a reminder of the days when Burnett and her grandmother, "out of spoons and relief money," worked nights as cleaning women in the Warner executive offices. We see Meryl Streep "hiding in the spotlight" in a refreshingly skeptical analysis of Streep's determination to be an actress rather than a star. Finally, Haskell closes with a wickedly funny section on recent fashion and style, including pieces on "Lipstick Envy" and "Nude With Attitude." Haskell describes Holding My Own in No Man's Land as "a kind of continuing set of ruminations, encounters, insights, and images of people and characters who have had an influence on our lives." With wit and style she illuminates the hopes and fears we project onto these larger-than-life figures-- the grand dames, the stoic heroes, the dueling couples--and the lessons we learned from them about how to fall in love, how to act as adults, and how to live in this complex world.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wit and insight about John Wayne, Doris Day, Lucille Ball, makeup and much more!.......2006-06-16

Molly Haskell is NOT a reviewer. She is a wonderful social critic whose feminism informs rather than limits the range of insights she brings to her subjects. Most of the subjects - but not all - have to do with women in movies and television: how they are depicted, the roles available etc. But in this wide-ranging collection, she also discusses makeup, rape fantasies, nudity and the new take-no-prisoners TV female comedians - among other things!

For a more thorough treatment of Women in Film, her book From Reverence to Rape is indispensable. But this collection allows her to ponder a wider range of subject. For those who really love film and popular art and are interested in the assumptions behind so much of our popular culture, this book will delight.

1 out of 5 stars Haskell couldn't review her way out of a wet paper bag.......2004-04-04

I have trouble suppressing a chuckle at the ponderous, self-important titles of Haskell's review books. Despite the grandiosity of the title of this one--"Women and Men and Film and Feminists": oh, is that all? Just those?--this book is not much more than simple recounting of the casts and the plots of movies she likes. You can probably get more critical information on the Lifetime or Oxygen websites. It's like she's turning film criticism into a parody of the institution itself. It's kind of sad that real feminist film critique has to be lumped in with this "Dear Diary / Love Molly" pablum. Oh, well. Maybe that means I can get *my* diary published!

2 out of 5 stars The only Bad Reese book I've read.......2006-03-04

I've read almost all of Reese's books (and thats saying a lot because he's so prolific). This was the only one that left me disappointed. It's almost as if he didn't write the book and Julian Pottage (the co writer) did, maybe Reese just added his name?

Here are some things that I didn't like:

                    * The obscure solution was maybe 2% better than what you would otherwise have done. If this type of situation comes up (which will be rare, it was some obscure safety play) you will do better than I will one time in 50. Whil this may be importwant if you can play like Bobby Hamman, mostof us will make other far more important errors. This would be of value only to an expert (someone who contends for national titles, not just a good club player).

                    * Some had reasonable play decisions, but poor analysis. There was a hand that involved testing for a plit taht would have changed the odds from 52%-48% to 49%-51%. Again, if you select a line of play that has a 49% chance of success rather than a 52%, you probably are not missing out too much. And this assumes that the authors assumption is correct, about the initial distribution. If its not then you are not 49-51 but instead 50-50 and might as well take the first line.

The problem was the explanations were not well done, as they were in all of Reeses books.

IF you are a contender in the Vanderbilt, Spingold, or Resinger, you may want to read this book. If you are just a good solid player I suggest you read Reeses other books like:

The Most Puzzling Situations in Bridge Play

                    Snares and Swindles

                    Extra Chance

                    and a few others.

Again, I wonder if Reese just affixed his name to this for soem royalties, and Pottage wrote it.

                    1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Trees.......2006-03-26

The problem with so many how-to books (this one included) is that they spend page after page telling you what they are going to tell you, then talking to you about what they are about to tell you what it is you are wanting to know ... and then telling you. Oh, yeah: after that they tell you what they already told you. And then the rest of the book is filled with "well this isn't related to our thesis, but you might be interested in this other stuff anyway."

I'll save you the $38 cover price right now ... this book tells you but one practical thing: publish a detailed operations manual for your business. That's it! Nada! Finis! Unless you, as a business owner, believe that half a page offering recommendations in FONT STYLES is important, you are well advised to stay away. This book is a rip-off.

                    1 out of 5 stars Buy E-myth Revised instead.......2005-01-29

The book E-myth Revised covers more information and is 1/3 the price of this book. Maybe buy this book if you don't understand E-myth and just need it explained to you in different words. Very dissappointed and thought this was a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jump Start for Business Building!.......2004-09-08

If you want to actually apply concepts of operations development to your own business, especially if you have 0-20 employees, you'll do well with Carter's book. You'll find short chapters, with simply stated to-do items and an understandable how to guide for setting up business operations. For my money, it's a steal at the price. If you can't glean one, single idea for bettering your business that's worth the 38 bucks, you're not paying attention. I've shaved thousands of dollars off my overhead expenses thanks to Chapter 15 alone. It's a lot of common sense stuff, but it was obviously common sense stuff I wasn't doing very well.

Books can only jump start your thinking and action - you're still the one who has to be willing to do the work. This is the best jump-start I've ever had for building my business.

1 out of 5 stars Dont waste your money.......2004-08-31

This book is an expensive beginners guide to business operations. I expected more details on the how to write an operations manual, this is not what I found. Most of the topics covered are the same covered by the E-Myth series, a better written book for the money.

1 out of 5 stars I wasted my money on this one :( .......2004-08-26

I hate to leave such a negative review, but it seems all this author did was take the information presented in "The E-Myth" by Michael Gerber, and make it her own (and in an amateurish way to boot!).

If you are a business owner who really wants to learn how to create systems so your company runs without you, then get the latest edition of "The E-Myth Revisited" and let a true pro show you the way.

                      Book Description

Dora Maar, born Henriette Théodora Markovitch in 1907, was a talented artist in her own right. While studying painting, she soon found a passion and gift for photography, and became a prominent member of the Surrealist movement. This catalogue traces her relationship with Picasso, from the time of their first meeting in late 1935 through 1937. Picasso expert Anne Baldassari demonstrates how those years were critical for both artists, and how their interaction provided mutual inspiration through the mid-1940s. The relationship is set within the context of major historical events, from the Spanish Civil War and the Popular Front, to the rise of fascism and World War II.

This chronological account brings a legend to life, allowing the reader unique access to two artistic minds. Maar s photographs, alongside Picasso's drawings, paintings, and poems, serve as a guide through the critical period in which these two figures influenced one another. Preserved in her studio archives, Maar's negatives and contact prints allow us to analyze in detail the intimacy of the life she shared with Picasso in all of its states, as well as the evolution of his art, including the colossal Guernica.

This exquisite volume features green-gilded pages and personal mementos—including notes scrawled on matchboxes and small sketches, which are produced on onion skin paper throughout. This book sheds light on the profound mark left upon Picasso and his work by their dynamic relationship.

                      Book Description

Francoise Gilot met Picasso during the German occupation of Paris, she was twenty-one, he was sixty-two.  For nearly a decade, Gilot shared her life with this giant of the art world, giving birth to two of his children, working as his model, and sharing his world.  This uniquely candid and vivid memoir takes readers behind the Piccasso legend to meet the man.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting books I have read on Picasso........2007-07-02

(.....please take note that due to legal constraints, there was no public tie made between this book and the movie "Surviving Picasso" starring Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore - I just wanted to give you all a little footnote here, because that movie *is* this book, virtually scene by scene, and almost word for word....and they did a fantastic job.)

This is a beautifully articulate book. I have read it four times. If you have interest in the mentality of Pablo Picasso, this book is one of a handful which you should take the time out to consume. It goes without saying that being written by an ex-lover there is some bias involved.

I'm not so much a fan of the man's work, but I have always been fascinated with his psyche.

Francoise Gilot is a very dynamic and insightful person and her work is as interesting to appreciate as her writing.

5 out of 5 stars His thoughts apply to every art.......2007-02-21

It is refreshing and empowering to see the words with which Picasso descirbes his arts and his talents, and the talents of his contemporaries. If you have artistic intutions, but, you can't really put a word to what you mean sometimes, it might be very helpful to read this book.

For he is thoughtful. And he is egotistical.

And, being both, he has quite a precise verbalization of the intellectual and analytical techniques he uses to make himself so successful. He paints be emotion, to be sure, but, when he steps back and evaluates his own work he is an accurate, and precise, and viscious critic. His own ability to express what his work lacks - and then address that identified issue - is inspiring and educational to artists and to scientists alike.

In the later years (the book is chronological), Francoise will spend more time talking about the children and her emotional relationship to Picasso. In this, there is less value to 'take away.'

But in the beginning two-third of this nonfiction narrative - with its intimate and intelligent insight into Pablo, Matisse, and Rembrandt (as well as those artists whom Picasso does not like) - is a treasure and I have gone to it many times to research half-remembered bytes of information.

To be human, too, it is a wonderful depiction of an unsual love and courtship.

5 out of 5 stars Highly interesting read from Gilot's perspective.......2006-12-03

Francoise Gilot is a legend as an artist and a feminist (my term...not hers). This book opens up a world about Picasso and Gilot's time together in a way that is almost impossible to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Intimate portrait of artistic genius as moral monster .......2005-01-10

I read this book with a certain guilt as if prying into the intimate world of others I had no business looking into. But the fascination with the life of the great artist, and the whole subject of creativity kept me reading on even when I felt a bit disgusted in doing so.
I don't think it is my prudery that led to these feelings. The Picasso of this work is an egomaniac, a moral monster, who shows absolutely no consideration whatever for those closest to him. The people who have helped him in the past do not count for him. The people who are involved with him in the present are manipulated by him for his own purposes. He is tremendously ambitious, greedy financially, stingy, sexually driven and demanding without necessarily being interested in the feelings of the woman he is with . Gilot is no innocent, and her relation with Picasso comes not only one feels out of her own ambition as an artist but her desire to be next to the big- deal the big- name the great genius of art. It is instructive how she cans the two aunts who raise her when the great Pablo demands exclusive attention. This is not to deny her genuine love for him or his passion for her, though no doubt this was never particularly exclusive. Picasso was a great user, user of materials and situations for his art, and user of people for his life. His work has a cruelty his life shares. And it seems to me that that cruelty means his work in the deepest sense does not reach the highest level, the level where Rembrandt and Michangelo and Raphael are. And this because the great draughtsman is not a great reader of the human soul . He is rather a twenty- second technical man a supreme master of means who knows how to put the machine in himself to use to cut up and recombine the world for his purposes. Gilot goes too as do all the previous wives and mistresses, the agents and friends. And Pablo takes and takes to the end .
Gilot is a tough character and in a way her presentation of herself as one who stands up to him at points gives the work a certain dramatic power. But in the end the feeling is that the greatest art cannot come of or dwell in the kind of sordidness of spirit which Picasso so often displayed. And thus the reading of this work gave me the sense that generations hence though they may admire the work of Picasso will not be inspired by and love it as we do with the work of the very greatest artists.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book, hard to put down once you get into it........2002-09-08

Not being very well educated in art, the book helped me better understand some of what Picasso was trying to portray in his artwork. It is an easy book to get through once you get into it, the way it is written it can be long and tedious at times but the information Francoise Gilot gives is quite sincere and in depth. The book will give you a better incite to Picasso's twisted and passionate life, leaving you with a newfound knowledge and idea about Picasso.

                                      Book Description

Creating Spaniards is a cultural and intellectual history that explains the intersection of politics and culture, and the formation of a national identity, during Spain's Second Republic and Civil War. It counters recent scholarship claiming that leaders of the Second Republic had no programs for "inventing traditions" to encourage a Spanish national identity.

Focusing on the Second Republic, 1931-1936, Sandie Holguín illustrates how various intellectuals and politicians of the Republican-Socialist coalition used theater, literature, and film to aid the construction of a unified Spanish culture and history. She uses memoirs, journals, newspapers, parliamentary debates, and archival sources in her examination of the impact that cultural reforms had on the transformation of one of Europe's oldest states.

...you will like this book. Otherwise, be wary. I had to read it for my Western Civilization class, it wasn't the worst book my teacher could have picked. I did like how it discussed the Misiones Pedagogicas and their libraries and traveling theaters. What really hurt me is the constant use of spanish words. They would only be defined in english once, and there were so many that I couldn't remember them all. There is also a lot of information about the Spainsh Civil War. I liked how the war was put in context of the culture they were trying to create. So, if you like Spain and esp. if you know Spanish, this will be a great book.
