Book Description
The extraordinary rise and fall of Vivendi Universal's flamboyant CEO, Jean-Marie Messier.
Jean-Marie Messier has been called the most ambitious French empire builder since Napoleon. He started as a bureaucrat at a sleepy French water utility, but he dreamed of being a global media mogul like Rupert Murdoch. And like Napoleon, he shocked the world with his accomplishments-until his inevitable downfall.
In just six years, through guile, luck, and clever accounting, Messier managed to gobble up media assets as diverse as MCA Records, Universal Studios, USA Networks, and various publishers, theme parks, videogame producers, and Internet companies on both sides of the Atlantic. He turned Vivendi Universal into a serious challenger to AOL Time Warner, News Corp., Viacom, and Disney. And in the process, he became a poster boy for the new economy, and one of the few European CEOs to act like a swaggering American.
But in 2002, everything fell apart. In The Man Who Tried to Buy the World, Jo Johnson and Martine Orange-the reporters who blew the lid off the story and often clashed with Messier-offer a page-turning narrative of the arrogant CEO's demise. The book details Messier's incredible hubris, which led him to buy more assets than he could possibly manage, while drowning his company in debt. It describes the dramatic boardroom coup that forced Messier out and explores Messier's fascinating relationships with two prominent Americans who became his partners-Edgar Bronfman, Jr., and Barry Diller.

A Must Reference.......2005-09-28
Any Bugs Bunny collector/enthusiast must have this book. The filmography alone at the end of the book is worth the price as a reference. I can compare it to my videos and Golden Collection DVDs and see what was covered. Great insights and sketches, big full color photos... you will not be disappointed.
YOU OUGHT TO LOVE BUGS.......2003-06-08
Bugs Bunny is the greatest cartoon character of all time. I really love that rabbit ever since I got a Bugs Bunny stuffed animal.
I think with _Bugs Bunny 50 Years and Only One Grey Hare_, people will understand everyone's favorite rabbit, who has entertained Americans and people around the world.
Bugs Bunny's wit and wisdom has made him an icon for all ages. Bugs, a clever beast with long ears who always makes the wrong turn at Alberquerque, has become a hero of many. This rabbit has become a hero for me, like it has been for many.
I think with the book, we will understand that Bugs' wit and wisdom has made him an icon for all ages, especially for all rabbit lovers.
ýThat Rascally Rabbit!ý.......2001-06-29
Joe Adamson does a fine job of bringing Bugs Bunny to "life" in this well-researched book. With a look at the evolution of the character, a breakdown of how the cartoons were received, and an admittedly subjective criticism of the author's 16 favorite Bugs Bunny shorts; the book has everything a Bugs' fan could hope for. Full of storyboards and clips from the cartoons this book is for any fan of animation and a must for the Bugs Bunny fanatic.
The Ultimate Tribute to the "Wascally Wabbit".......2001-06-06
Quick quiz--who is the only cartoon character with a service record in the United States Marine Corps?
If you said "Bugs Bunny", you're right on target. Such was the "scwewy wabbit's" impact during the years of World War II, the Marines insisted that he "enlist," giving him dog tags and ID papers complete with paw prints. At the end of the war, he was honorably discharged as a master sergeant!
Such gestures are hardly surprising, according to Joe Adamson. Bugs' debut in 1940 marked the convergence of a rebellious spirit and a dire period in our history when just such an attitude was sorely needed. We needed to see Bugs nonchalantly thumb his nose at his adversaries when we were facing our most frightening adversaries of all--namely Germany and Japan.
He did not spring to life fully formed, however. Bugs, in seminal form, appeared in a number of cartoons in the late thirties, but was not the wabbit we know him to be. Crazy, out of control, and posessing a Goofy-like voice, he seemed more at home in Bob Clampett's Wackyland than facing the business end of Elmer Fudd's shotgun. Adamson takes us through these early incarnations of Bugs, and gives us a quick history of the Leon Schlesinger studio that spawned him. Schlesinger's outfit had been a decidedly low-rent operation producing second-rate imitations of Disney cartoons when the great "Tex" Avery arrived--and promptly stood the industry on its ear. To Avery, "cute" was out--and a manic, self-aware approach was in. Some two years after the first proto-Bugs cartoons, Avery restyled the embryonic rabbit to fit the new studio philosophy. When faced with a gun-toting hunter, Bugs did not scream or run away, but responded with a smart-alecky "What's up, Doc?"--and immediately shocked and delighted audiences.
Even at the height of his success, Adamson says, the rabbit continued to change and grow, most notably at the hands of his self-styled "analyist," Chuck Jones. Bugs under Jones became a thinking character, fighting only when provoked (and uttering the immortal words "Of course you realize this means war.") This Bugs was a winner, someone who seemed to know something his adversaries Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck did not. And audiences loved him all the more for it.
Inevitably, as with all stars, Bugs underwent a period of decline, and Adamson takes us through this era as well. The long run on television, the ill-conceived specials and compilation movies are discussed (Chuck Jones' "Carnival Of The Animals" musical feature was the low point). Significant in its absence is Bugs' big-screen re-emergence in "Space Jam"--understandable since this book was first published in 1990 (the best possible excuse for an updated edition, Mr. Adamson.) A detailed background of Bugs and his various opponents takes up the back section of the book, and is quite interesting. There aren't as many behind-the-scenes stories as in Jones' "Chuck Amuck", but it also spares us the endless self-congratulation of Chuck's tome.
This book is a must read for anyone wanting to know the right way to run an animation studio--namely, leave the animators alone (free from interference from networks and parents' groups) and let the magic happen. Leon Schlesinger, who rarely supervised the animators' work if he could help it, unwittingly had the right approach all along.
I loved it!.......1999-10-14
Joe Adamson really hit the spot. I'm the world's biggest Bugs Bunny fan and I was thrilled to discover that somebody cared enough about this true American hero and his life to write a book about him! Even though it was pretty long, it held my attention to the end (when I nearly cried). Few people that are my age really know how important Bugs was to our country - after all, he gave us hope for victory during WWII. I'm really glad Adamson decided to write this book from the views of Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, and Mel Blanc - it was really good! The photos and paintings really added to it, too. Throughout the whole thing, I learned a ton about this "wascally wabbit". I now know I can confidently answer any question in the world about Bugs Bunny!
Book Description
Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham make up Led Zeppelin, one of the greatest hard rock bands ever. This heavily illustrated book gives readers an in-depth examination of everything that inspired the songs of Led Zeppelin. What was the "House of the Holy"? Where was the "Stairway to Heaven"? Which strange encounters led to such classics as "Kashmir" and "Trampled Underfoot"? Was it an earthquake that inspired "Going to California" on their untitled fourth album?
Dazed and Confused reveals the roots and origins of the songs on all eight of the band's celebrated studio albums, together with all the stories behind material released after Zeppelin's break-up in 1980, including Unledded: No Quarter and the BBC Sessions album. You are invited to explore the inspiration behind the sound of four brilliant musicians who defined the concept of hard rock, and yet imbued their work with passionate magic and mystery. That mystery is heavily explained in Dazed and Confused.

Great for Fans.......2006-11-17
I enjoyed this book because the photographs were clear . I also loved the details behind the songs. It makes listening to the music more intimate because you know the stories behind them. Well worth the price.
story behind the music.......2006-07-03
excellent read for any led zep fan. chris welch has done an
excellent job. this is a must for your musical library.
It all depends..........2005-11-29
I was highly excited when i bought this book. I am a very obsessed Led Zeppelin fan and was looking forward to reading it after listening endlessly to all of their songs. If you are just starting with Zeppelin its a great book to read, but if you a huge long time fan, than i dont recommend that you buy it. I already knew most of the stuff they said and the author lacks in explaining the actual meaning of the songs. The 'analysis' is too short. Ramble On only has one paragraph!! I was disappointed...the author is telling me some lyrics and some instruments that are used..its purely not enough..you can learn more by going on the message boards at www.Led-Zeppelin.com..and trust me i have...
Mediocre.......2005-02-16
Tends to "describe" or give his opinion about the songs rather than telling the story behind them. I can listen to the songs - I don't need to be told how great they are or how Plant's voice sounds on a particular number.
A disappointment.
Led Zeppelin.......2004-11-02
Led Zeppelin Dazed And Confused is a great guide to Led Zeppelin's songs. Its has all the stories behind the songs!
It also has great pictures of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Boham, and John Paul Jones on mainly every page! I think this book will appeal to all Led Zeppelin fans!

Customer Reviews:
Supportive, but .......2007-09-18
The guide makes an excellent resource book, but is a little short on the step-by-step how to. I think a better title would have been "Resources and Outlines to starting ..."
Overall, I liked the information it provided, I only wished it shown more of the nuts-and-bolts of starting the business, then it would have earned the title step-by-step. I would recommend this to those seeking additional detail information.
Book Gives a minor review of a home based recruiting business........2007-08-23
It explains very basic information on a home based recruiting business. Almost like common sense.
Worst business book in the history of paper! .......2007-02-28
I was excited to receive a few of the books covering this topic, which I ordered from Amazon recently. Oh my goodness, this book is so devoid of any value that I actually feel sorry for the author. She is, I'm sure, OK with things, since she has successfully fleeced many buyers out of their money. However, prior to today, I had not seen a book that has 5 note pages at the end of each short chapter. I would have more respect for the author if she released this book at the 30 or 40 pages of actual content that is included. Note that I didn't say GOOD content, but simply content. I actually found myself laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of this book. In reality, it's inspiring. I am going to write a book now, with 40 pages of content and 60 pages of summaries and note pages. If this piece of poo can sell, I know I can write something to cash in on people's stupidity.
Short On Info..........2006-11-05
I was disappointed. There's not much here of value. "The Complete Guide?" Not even close. Avoid!
good for beginners.......2006-08-08
It is clear that Ms. Cawley's heart is in the right place. Being new to the recruiting business, but very experienced in owning my own business's this book is short, simple and very abbreviated. I bought it because I am starting a new business and purchased everything (with in reason) I could find.
About the only thing in this book that I found of value are the chapter summaries which is what the entire chapter could have been and Chapter 5 which is a valuable resource to research organizations, news letters, electronic search groups etc.
Personally, Chapter 5 is worth the 10 bucks I paid for the book.
Book Description
The stirring, full-color oral biography of the singer whose pure, haunting voice came to be loved by millions around the world after her tragically brief life.
Eva Cassidy's albums Songbird, Live at Blues Alley, Eva By Heart, Time After Time, and Imagine have sold over a million and a half copies in the U.S. and millions more worldwide. Her songs have been heard on many television shows and film soundtracks, and the video of her classic performance of "Over the Rainbow" is the most requested in BBC history. Yet she lived to see only one of her solo albums released, a CD she underwrote herself and sold from the trunk of her car before her tragic death.
Capturing Eva's essence and tender life story, Eva Cassidy: Songbird collects the intimate memories of relatives, close friends, and the musicians who collaborated with her. The book tells the story of her too-brief life and enduring music. Featuring candid full-color photos and reproductions of Eva's original artwork, a vivid portrait emerges of a woman who devoted her energies to the things she truly loved-giving encouragement to those around her, tending to plants at the nursery where she worked, and performing her music at clubs in Washington, D.C. She succumbed to cancer at age thirty-three just as the world was starting to notice her arresting voice.
Eva Cassidy's music continues to grow in recognition from critics and legions of fans throughout the world. The rock icon Sting has said her voice possesses "a magical quality. People respond to its purity. It suggests something ethereal-something unattainable." This American edition contains two new chapters about her influences and her posthumous success in her native country. With the publication of Eva Cassidy: Songbird, the woman behind the unforgettable voice will at last be known.

I am an Eva Cassidy fan from years ago. I was so pleased to hear that their was a book written about one of the most talented women singers of all times.
This book takes you into the life of Eva from beginning to her last days of life with cancer.
I couldn't put it down.
This book is like a rich scrapbook filled with pictures and stories. You will come away from it feeling the void Eva has left and happy to have gotten to know about her life.
If you are a fan...this is a must have.
If you never heard of Eva, do something nice for yourself and purchase one of her Cd's and this book. You won't be sorry you did!

Eva Cassidy: Songbird.......2006-02-25
What a beautifully told story of the woman behind the
incredible voice. Input and photos from family and
friends along with background information about her
music really pieces it all together for a great read.
Simply out of this world!.......2006-02-08
I stumbled upon a recording of "Over the Rainbow" by Eva Cassidy. It moved me immensly and though I have heard this number sung by many others, this particular version seemed to reach out and touch my heart like no other had done before!
I have subsequently read all about her and am in the process of collecting all her albums. It's a shame God has taken away a golden voice that seems just a touch away...
She has sung with her heart and added feeling to each note, word and movement.

An overview to the US airlines' war efforts........1998-02-11
For those not familiar with the support given to the war effort by the US domestic airlines (and Pan Am), this book provides a general introduction to the topic. It's written in an anecdotal manner that deals primarily with the role of the airlines in the Air Transport Command. The majority of the information pertains to American,Continental,Delta,Eastern, Northeast,Northwest,Western,United and Pan Am with less coverage to the smaller regional airlines. The book would have been more valuable as a historical work had the topics been covered in a more systematic manner; a section on the ATC; the modification centers and either specific incidents, i.e. the April 1943 mass flight of C-46s from Miami to Karachi, India or the Top Brass squadron based at Bolling Field, Washington that ferried VIPs around the world. Footnotes or documentation would have been helpful to direct readers to more indepth articles or sources of Mr. Serling's information. I would have liked for information on the author's reference to the B-17 photo-recon flight over Japan in advance of the Doolittle raid (p.148) All-in-all a good, general book, but there was not enough solid information to classify this book as a 'must' for one's reference shelf. (Comments from Kensington, Mr. Serling or other readers are welcome.)
Book Description
Big cats are threatened as never before and are the subject of intense interest among nature fans and conservationists alike.

The text has a strong focus on the status of the endangered or threatened big cats, current efforts to save them, and the hopes and chances for their survival.
The accompanying photographs by Erwin and his wife Peggy are remarkable and comprehensive, showcasing five decades' worth of their best big cat photos-most of which have not been published in book form. Range maps and cat tracks round out the combination.
From the lion, tiger, leopard, cheetah, and snow leopard of Africa and Asia to the cougar and jaguar of North and South America, "The Last Big Cats," provides complete coverage of these remarkable creatures.
Customer Reviews:
Coolness gets an upgrade! .......2006-01-04
This is the best damn book on the big cats(which, as I have said REPEATEDLY, are my favorite kinds of animals EVER IN THE WORLD)I have ever read in my entire f**king life! Where to start? It has nearly all the information on the eight species that is known & beautiful photographs of all of them, there are so many terrific chapters, each dedicated to one of these marvelous animals(the first chapter is an ode to lions, followed by the same thing for leopards, then cheetahs, then tigers, then snow leopards, then pumas and finally jaguars. In these are bonus animals like the clouded leopard, caracal, serval and hyena(all four of which are also cool, though not as much as the former mentioned)If you are an animal lover and want to find out on these fabulous felines about how they mate, what they eat, what they do to play, fight or practice skills, how many there are, where they live & any or all in between, then you should get this book. The only bad part was reading about poachers & their supporters(all of whom I want dead but can't make that way, of course. Bummer.)But other than that, this book is a masterpiece on the most beautiful and cool animals on the planet and I recommend it to all nature lovers & anyone over the age of 12. Oh, & here's how I rank the big cats. From the eighth best to the number one best, in all terms of good/worthiness.
# 8: The Clouded Leopard-Funny and cute, and somewhat cool
#7. The Cheetah-The spots are really stylish & I love that speed
# 6. The Snow Leopard-Mysterious & gorgeous. I like creepy stuff
# 5. The Puma/Cougar/Mountain Lion-It matters not what you call it! It's a cool/pretty 1 color cat & the best in North America
# 4. The Leopard-The original spotted cat! Lithe, agile, fast, strong & feisty-these words describe the terrific Panthera Pardus
# 3. The Jaguar-Very golden-both ways. It has the coolest bite of any cat, better spots than leopards or cheetahs, more beauty than any animal except lions & tigers. Best in South America. I like their moan-like roars, as well. It really increases my joy
# 2. The Tiger-These cool cats come in close 2nd place on top 3 scale, jaguars in close 3rd, duh. They're the biggest, strongest & most ruthless of the cats. The stripes add to their glorious beauty & they're quite fast/agile for a huge animal. Best in Asia
# 1. The Lion-This is my favorite modern animal of all time, and will be that way for all eternity. They have the cutest young, live in great prides, have beautiful gold(some brown)fur, they have the best roar, and nothing tops them. Best in Africa, of course
Anyway, I gotta get going now. But remember, I'm a big cat lover and if you are, buy this book, if not, buy it and become one!
Each big cat receives a solo chapter of focus.......2004-05-06
Erwin Bauer's Last Big Cats features both big cat natural history and the stunning color photos of team Erwin and wife Peggy Bauer, widely known as fine nature photographers with a host of wildlife book publications to their name. Each big cat receives a solo chapter of focus, from leopards and tigers to snow leopards and lions, making for a gorgeous presentation suitable both for research, reports and coffee table exhibition alike.
