Simply awesome stories from a great person and driver.......2003-12-10
We got this book as a gift for our son who is really into racing like us. I thought I'd just thumb through it and ended up reading the whole thing. Then, I listened to the CD of Bobby telling some of the stories that are in the book and I went back and re-read those chapters. Needless, to say I have to get another copy for my son now because his gift is worn a little bit - oh well.
It's nice to see a book about one of NASCAR's greatest that tells the lighter side of his career. It made me look at Bobby Allison in a whole new light and respect. If you are an old fan of NASCAR you'll love this because of the pictures alone. If you're a new fan, you need to read this so you know where the sport came from and what racing was really like.
Just get the book and you'll see why. Bobby, thanks for sharing these with us. It makes me wish you were on the track, still, even more.

I just bought this book from Bobby and Tim at Atlanta Motor Speedway and just loved it. We listened to the CD on the way home as my wife read the book. Then, I read the book and listened to the CD, again.
The stories in this book are told by Bobby Allison himself and done only the way he can tell a story. I watched him race for years and this brought back some great memories of great moments in racing.
I'm going to get one for each of my son's for Christmas. They are always wanting to know the history of NASCAR and this will give them a lot of answers as to why guys like Bobby made NASCAR what it is today.

Great stories from a great driver.......2003-11-03
The book is a great read and the photos brought back a lot of memories from watching Bobby kick [...] on the NASCAR tracks. There are some great pictures of Davey and Clifford when they were younger, and of Bobby and Judy's whole family.
I enjoyed the heck out of the CD and they way Bobby told some of those stories was just hysterical. Bobby did help make NASCAR what it is today and the book captures why and how he did it.

I just purchased this book and found it to be a wonderful account of some great stories that took place during this man's life. Bobby Allison gave a lot so NASCAR could be what it is today and the pictures and stories are wonderful.
I laughed out loud so many times at the stories told in only the way Bobby can tell one. Reading it was one thing, but the CD that comes with the book is him actually telling some of the stories in the book.
If you're a racing fan, this is a must by for you or a friend. Bobby, you done good on this book and you should be proud.

My wife and I had fun laughing at some of the characters in this book. Apparently there was NOTHING you couldn't make fun of back in the 1950s.
Even if you're not interested in advertising this is still an enjoyable little book, fun to look at while sipping tea on a rainy afternoon. Well worth the money.

My brother is a commercial artist and his personal artistic style is kind of "retro". I got this book for him for his birthday because I though he might like to have it around for inspiration just in case he needed some someday. I was right! He loved it. I was surprised at the size of the book. It's kind of small, but it gets it's point across just fine. Being a fan of nostalgia, I wouldn't mind having it for myself.

The compilers have done a wonderful job; the layouts are absolutely marvelous, a real pleasure to flip through, great retro colors used, and should be an essential addition to the collection of anyone who enjoys 50s & 60s graphics.
A great compendium of retro product logos.......2004-07-16
Tons of product logos here, with the bulk of them from the 30s to the 70s. These are reproduced very well, and each of them is dated and carries a two-line description of their purpose and company origin. There are a few pages of introductory front matter that summarize the history of product logos, but the meat of the book is taken up by the graphics, with anywhere from one to four logos per page. I didn't know there were so many anthropomorphic logos, among them Mr. Coffee Nerves, Mr. Dee-Lish, Mr. TV Tube, Phillips Screw Man, Johnny-One-Note, Miss My-T-Fine, Miss Fluffy Rice and Mr. Weatherball. Many of them you'll recognize, and some of them you won't, but all of them will delight you.

A fascinating foray into the sometimes clever, sometimes idiotic, occasionally just plain bizarre (Mr. TV Tube? Dunkie Donut-Head? Phillips Screw Man??) world of advertising characters. Anybody obsessed with kitschy pop culture, especially that of the 50's and 60's, will want this one. You get all the cartoon mascots you've ever seen on "retro" t-shirts at your local Hot Topics, plus hundreds more of varying degrees of obscurity. Indeed there was a period when designers would simply draw a smiley face on a cog and call it "Mr. Cog," and you see a lot of that here, often in hilariously weird contexts - lawn spinkler heads, pistons, the state of Nevada, a sock, all grinning amiably at you as they pitch themselves. You've got your cartoon pigs voraciously devouring pork rinds, your cigarette boxes with showgirl legs, your anthropomorphic donuts, and robots robots robots. A book like this not only takes you through a wide range of illustration styles, it hints at what life was like in those days, those "simpler times" (though it's arguable how much we've really changed). What better window into American psychology in the 20th century than the commercial devices by which we've been beguiled into consuming? Aunt Jemima has stories to tell on you.

A Book to Re-read, Enjoy, and ponder time and time again.......2000-06-21
Thomas Merton will always be one of my favorite seekers of Truth ( when I read the selections here I find myself not feeling so alone in my search)...here is a great slection of Merton, not meant to be comprehensive (Merton's output is too enormous for that)...here you discover Merton the poet, the monk, but overall, the writer...here are his passions for the Spanish poets, Eastern Philosphy, Russian Literature, to mention a few...this book has selections that start and end with his "Seven Storey Mountain" the autobiography which placed Merton into the literary limelight to begin with; however the selections in between even incorporate selections from the posthumous "Asian Journal"...would love to see a deluxe edition incoroporating selections from his now published private journals...
Must-have addition to modern theological libraries.......1999-05-10
An interesting, well-organized anthology of Merton's total works. This collection demonstrates the value of having the author contribute to the production of an anthology. Merton's works encompass a dramatic range of theological and literary style, and this anthology deals fairly with each. From the Augustinian Seven Storey Mountain, to Thoureau-like literary reviews and journals, and even to some Harlem Renaissance-like poetry, this anthology has it all. Merton in all his brilliance... a must read, and a must-have addition to any modern theological library, Catholic or not.
Well chosen pieces and a fine balance..........1998-10-05
Thomas Merton was a master of self-relflection style writing and this reader captures that nuance of Merton's being so well that the book reads almost like a diary. It is laid out to follow Merton's life, pulling from the majority of his published works. It's fascinating to watch his more superstitious and youthful ideas about Catholicism slowly turn into a more practical mature discipline. It's also interesting from the viewpoint of a writer, something Merton explicily was whether he liked it or not. Some of the writing is fantastic, magical, while some is dry and self-involved - just as any writer can and will be. Very inspiring. I took this book with me on a retreat to Gethsemani and it made the perfect companion. Well-worth owning even if you have most of Merton's books already.
Excellent foundation for learning about Merton.......1998-02-12
This book does provide some of the best writings of Thomas Merton. The editors of the book have given the reader the ability to see the mind of Thomas Merton through a long period of his life. The editors did not only take from Merton's more famous books but they also printed some previously unavailable writings by Merton. My only problem with this book was the limited selection of works concerning Merton's interest in Zen.

All major theaters are covered and each action is analyzed in this detailed look at what it was really like to fight at the sharp end during World War II. While some authorities maintain that only twenty-five percent of all combat soldiers fired their weapons at the enemy because of the innate human reluctance to take another's life, and others take the view that soldiers enjoy killing, the author of this book argues that combat is far more complex than either of these statements imply.
David Lee contends that a unit's success in battle is the result of the type of training it received. His analysis includes a careful examination of the weapons and tactics of each action. He describes what happened, for example, when a battalion of ordinary British soldiers trained in the traditional manner came up against the Waffen SS, whose training was formidable and bore close resemblance to the Commandos. Then he looks at how a rifle battalion held the sniper position against overwhelming odds in the desert war but was nearly wiped out when it went to Italy. Finally, using material gathered by General Marshall and his team of combat historians, he tells the story of a U.S. infantry regiment on D-Day. This revealing and absorbing account of the terror and excitement of close-quarter combat takes the reader directly into the heat of battle.

When you get down to it, this book is only a collection of first-hand combat accounts. The author tries to tie them together by relating them to training and combat conditioning, but it is merely a very thin veneer to dress up a simple oral history collection. Viewed as such, the book isn't bad, but also nothing particularly special and certainly nothing new.
Mostly British recounts of WWII.......2006-09-04
Lee's book compiles firsthand accounts of (mostly British) front line soldiers' experiences in WWII.
Basing the book on a loose premise that training and operant conditioning may be key to an infantry force's effectiveness, Lee chronicles Fairbairn Sykes style commando training and its results, as well as examples of less "elite" infantry forces and the conditions that enabled them to fail or succeed (such as the quality of their leadership).
Excellent book for conveying soldiers' firsthand experiences; however, it subsumes the thesis of operant conditioning's role in combat, focusing more on material taken from soldiers' journals and interviews than on psychological theories.
Choice of Waffen SS soldiers on the book cover may have been less appropriate than a photo of British commandos, as the Allied to German ratio of material is much higher.
A Major Contribution to the Field!.......2006-06-04
"Up Close and Personal: The Reality of Close-Quarter Fighting in World War II" by David Lee is one of the best, and most informative books I have read in a very long time.
For students of close combat, and combat training, this book is absolutely vital. For fans of WWII it is the most important book this year. For those who value personal combat narratives, this is an jam-packed gem of a book.
The author's key contribution is to demonstrate (with powerful first person narratives) the various firing rates of units in WWII, and to demonstrate the advantage of the kind of training (ie, modern style conditioning) that British Commando and American Ranger units recieved.
A must have for the library of any student of combat, any law enforcement trainer, or anyone in the military today.

This is an excelent introduction to an understanding of the work on religion and American politics. Aside from the thorough coverage of the material, the authors have an extensive set of suggested readings with each chapter. I have found these extremely useful in furthering my understanding of the subject.
