Book Description

At some point in the odyssey of our lives, most of us have been affected by caring adults who made a difference: their advice, their guidance, their example led us to encounter the world. The Person Who Changed My Life is a collection of essays in which individuals who have distinguished themselves in their fields write about the men and women who served as their mentors. Among the contributors are Walter Cronkite, Larry King, Dr. Arthur Caliandro, Elie Wiesel, Marian Wright Edelman, Julia Child, Gloria Estefan, and Dina Merrill.

All seventy-five contributors paint moving portraits of the people who had a lasting influence on their personal or professional lives. In so doing, they tell us something very personal about themselves. In this varied collection of essays, the word mentor takes on many different meanings--we read about favorite teachers, personal friends, older co-workers, and even fictional characters.

In the foreword, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton writes about her own experiences with mentoring and emphasizes the importance of getting involved in programs to help children in the early grades by giving them positive adult role models. And in the introduction, Matilda Cuomo describes how mentoring works and how you can become a mentor and start a mentoring organization in your community.

These informative and heartfelt essays by people who have excelled in their professions by hard work and perseverence, and with the helpful assistance of others, will inspire the reader to become a mentor and influence the lives of children in his or her own community. In his essay, Pete Hamill writes about how several mentors played a role in his life and discusses the importance of developing an internal mentor who is "a composite of a number of people, those we know and those we have never met." In the introduction Matilda Raffa Cuomo demonstrates how it is vital that children receive one-to-one attention from caring adults who can serve as inspirational examples to the children, teaching the children the value of hard work in school and beyond. She describes the many benefits children receive, her own memorable mentors, and the great sense of satisfaction a mentor experiences.

The Person Who Changed My Life paints a moving picture of human service, community involvement, and simple compassion. And its stories of success are testimony to the long-lasting impact a mentor can have on a person both as a child and as an adult.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2004-02-09

A lot of interesting information about alot of our favorite public people. It makes us realize how important it is to take the time to input into the life of the young person that may cross our path in this life. You just never know who or what may come of it!

1 out of 5 stars Read Marlo Thomas' "The Right Words at the Right Time".......2003-10-04

I have read both this book and that authored by Marlo Thomas. Compared to Thomas' offering, this one is shallow and poorly edited. Some of the contributors offered up not one, but multiple people who changed their lives. The net result is a rambling of thank-you's and very little depth...very much like an acceptance speech at the Academy Awards.

Book Description

As current manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, Larry Bowa has seen a lot in his 34-year career in baseball; so much that Bowa himself recently exclaimed, "I've been in the game for so long now, nothing really shocks me anymore." True, perhaps, but while Bowa may no longer be shocked by what he witnesses on and off the diamond, his passion for winning has remained as constant as his love for the game. Bowa's initiation into the big leagues began in Philly as a shortstop in 1970 and has spanned the life of three Phillies ballparks. During those early years with stints at organizations including the Mets and the Cubs, Bowa gained a reputation as a passionate loud mouth. Although Bowa himself admits his misdeeds were a result of nothing more than youthful inexperience ("Since I left San Diego I've never thrown chairs or the food spread again"), he still has a flame in his heart and a flair to win. "Looking back on it, I was wrong. That's inexperience. But I still come to the ballpark every day with that burning desire to win. I hate to lose and that will never change."

5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2004-04-29

I was born and raised in Philly, and make no mistake, Larry Bowa is Phillies baseball. The book focuses on his time in Philadelphia as a player and now as a manager, so it covers multiple eras. There are some great photos included too. The author, Barry Bloom, writes a really neat Preface, where he talks about about his relationship with Bowa, and how he (Bloom) was the first person to let Bowa know that he was going to be fired as Padres manager in 1988. (At the time, Bloom was writing for the San Diego Union-Tribune.) Really interesting stuff!

3 out of 5 stars An attempt to justify Bowa as the manager of the Phillies.......2004-04-16

I am still trying to make up my mind if "Larry Bowa: `I Still Hate to Lose'" was written either a season too early or a season too late. If this book by Barry M. Bloom, the sportswriter who wrote the book with lengthy quotations from Bowa throughout the book," had come out a year earlier it would have been after Bowa had won National League Manager of the Year after guiding the Philadelphia Phillies to a respectable second place finish in the NL East. With the Atlanta Braves being so decimated by free agency that a thirteenth straight title seems an impossibility and the World Champion Florida Marlins having to lose several key players as well, the Phillies are favorite to win the title, which would mean a book like this next year could celebrate their success. However, given the team's collapse at the end of last year, it is hard not to have second thoughts about their prospects (signing Kevin Millwood for another season, picking up Eric Milton, and getting Billy Wagner to be the stopper are both good signs). Then again, the Phillies are getting off to a rough start, the Marlins are hot, and already there are calls for Bowa to get axed.

When I picked up this book I was expecting it to be a biography of Bowa, who enjoyed a fiery reputation as a hard playing shortstop for the Phillies and Cubs in a relatively successful career. Bowa was never going to be considered for the Hall of Fame, but he was often an All-Star and in his era when you ticked off the five best shortstops on the fingers of one hand he was going to be there most of the time. Instead, "I Still Hate to Lose" is really more of an apologia. I have seen presidential candidates pick running mates with less justification that is provided in this book for Bowa being signed to manage the Phillies. The problem is that Bloom spends so much time explaining how Bowa's problems with particular players (e.g., Stanley Jefferson, Chris Brown, Scott Rolen) are not his fault, that it is hard to remember those players who speak highly of him as a manager (e.g., John Kruk). The net result is that the failures seem to outweigh the successes, which is not exactly how you want to make your case here.

The problem is that if this book is supposed to convince me that Bowa is a first-rate major league manager it is not providing the evidence that would prove the point for me beyond the team's record. You would think there would be stories of key moves in a game, some evidence of Bowa's skill at baseball strategy, but they are not forthcoming. Instead we get stories about Bowa not throwing temper tantrums and people providing votes of confidence. The same thing applies when Bowa is described as the best third base coach in baseball; there is not one specific suggestion as to what that involves. We are constantly being told things in this book about Bowa that I would rather be shown, especially if I am to be convinced he is one of the best at his chosen vocation. I stopped counting the number of times that Bowa looked back on his past and decided he should have done things differently because I would rather have the argument made in positive terms instead of these double negatives.

There are four quotations on the dedication page, including A. Bartlett Giamatti's famous poem "The Green Fields of the Mind" and Chico Marx's baseball bit from "Duck Soup," but the most relevant one is from Bernard Malamud's novel "The Natural": "We have two lives-the one we learn with and the life we live after that." In the context of this book the life that Bowa learned with did not end until he was hired to be the manager of the Phillies, with the learning coming as a player, as a minor league manager, as the manager of the San Diego Padres, and as a third-base coach for the Phillies, Angels and Mariners. This book would have worked a lot better if the focus was on the lessons, provided, of course, that the proof was actually forthcoming to prove each point. But I have the feeling that the only way that could happen is if the book was written first person from Bowa's perspetive, because I think if Bowa kept talking he would show why he is a good baseball manager.

It is helpful to keep in mind that Bloom is a sportswriter, because there is definitely a sense at times throughout this book that the chapters are more like sports articles (so I was not surprised to see that Chapter 10 was based on an actual article in the "San Diego Tribune"). There are a couple of points that pop up more than once in the book. For those who pick up this book and want more of a biography about Bowa, apparently you need to go check out the book that Bloom wrote about him back in the San Diego days, "Bleep! Larry Bowa Manager." Maybe that is why the look at Bowa's early life and playing career is so uneven. Fans of Bowa as a player are going to be rather disappointed by this book, and even those who support him as Phillies manager are going to be uneasy after reading this book. I should have had a higher opinion of Bowa at the end of this book than I had before I picked it up and, to my surprise, that is not the case here.

2 out of 5 stars Makes the less scholarly among us feel like a "maroon".......2001-05-30

Animation fans be warned--this is anything but light reading.

While I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person, I must admit I had considerable trouble slogging through the dense, polysyllabic prose. Once I did so, however, I found the book did contain some interesting observations:

In one installment, one of the book's many co-contributors examines the deconstruction--and reassertion--of gender roles. No news to those of us who are transgendered--the book points out things that many in the TG community find obvious. Namely the main premise, that gender roles are ridiculed (as with Bugs Bunny's crossdressing) in order to reinforce them. Whether the animators themselves had this intention is questionable--they were merely following a formula as old as vaudeville-- but it does make one think. A related essay covers the lampooning of heterosexual behavior in the Pepe Le Pew cartoons. The contributor noticed what I discovered many years ago--that "gay panic" in straight males forces them into the same sort of blissful denial as poor Pepe. They, like Pepe, try to convince the world they are irresistible to women, because that is what defines them as men. Most of all, however, they're trying to convince themselves.

There is also an excellent overview of the portrayal of blacks in Warner Brothers cartoons--it contends, as I have always believed, that the animators themselves were not necessarily racist even if their cartoons sometimes were. The fact that Bob Clampett went so far as to take his animators to a black jazz club in L.A. (as preparation for the brilliant "Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs") shows a sincere, if naive, sensitivity on his part. Rather, it was the enforced racial separation of the time--and the resulting ignorance of whites toward black people--that were the real culprits. Those who participated in the making of such cartoons now wish they hadn't--they would hardly have been so contrite if they truly were racist. It is a period they--and we--are now trying too hard to live down.

Given the sometimes insightful essays contained in this book, I wanted desperately to give it a higher rating, but it is weighed down too much by wordy "pedagoguese" for me to give it a higher recommendation. The whole in this case is less than the sum of its parts, and no book that requires one to have a dictionary within arm's reach is fun reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book That Covers Topics Others Wouldn't Think Of.......1999-05-26

This is a great book for anyone who likes warner brothers animation. This book covers many interesting topics that you normally wouldn't think of. Some on the topics cover Gender Evasion of bugs bunny, African-American:Images and portrayal, temporary Disneyfication of Warner cartoons and fans verses Warner Brothers and even talks about the fans erotic fantasys (some people actually think of that ?)on the internet. It's a really interesting book and I really recomend it. It's not boring like others i've read. Each chapter is also written by a different author ( Kevin Sandler only edited them)so it keep it interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Serious, but still fun.......1999-05-11

Over the last few years, academics have discovered the joy of writing about pop culture phenomena. Some (like the contributors to the book Enterprise Zones, a collection of papers on Star Trek) get lost in a fog of postmodernist critical/cultural theory, churning out abstruse and obtuse collections of quotations from French philosophers, ignoring as much as possible the text under study.

Thankfully, the contributors to this book don't do that. They're writing some serious history and commentary, but the Warner Bros. cartoons remain the focus, not what Jameson said about what Derrida said about what Foucault said. More to the point, even when criticizing elements of the cartoons (as in the paper on representation of black characters), the reader senses that the writers are fans of the Warner Bros. cartoons, flawed though some may be. There's always the sense that, no matter how serious the discussion, this is ultimately about something fun.

Oh, and the editor's comments in the introduction, about the recent dumbing down of the classic characters into friendly TV commercial shills and merchandise movers, is right on the money (so to speak).

    Book Description

Chess mastery has been recognized since ancient times as an unparalleled way to learn political strategy, but until now no book has explored the life lessons chess teaches and how they can transform lives.

In The Tao of Chess, Chess Master Peter Kurzdorfer seamlessly blends the wisdom of a time-honored spiritual quest for truth with 200 principles that will improve anyone's chess game. By following the author's principles, readers not only come to enjoy the game more, they develop a habit of seeking underlying truth—whether in a chess game or a real-life situation.

The Tao of Chess is full of pithy advice such as:

    · Understanding is more important than memory
    · Fortune favors the brave
    · When you see a good move, wait and look for a better move
    · Mistakes tend to come in bunches
    · Trust your intuition; it's usually right

Authoritative and easy to follow, The Tao of Chess will turn every reader into a master strategist!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars good read.......2006-11-26

I enjoyed this primer (and more than that) on how to play chess. It is written in clear language and will improve almost anybody's game.

3 out of 5 stars Good index of basic best practices.......2006-02-27

This little book contains a lot of chess nuggets, some of which may come across as very obvious, some as reminders of forgotten truths, and others will certainly increase your arsenal of chess skills. Even when stating the obvious, the key is to apply all 200 truths consistently and at the right time!

My only complaint with this book is that the author always uses examples of his own games in which he did the right thing. It would have made him seem a bit less pretentious had he also included a smattering of examples where he was on the receiving end of one of these chess/life lessons.

3 out of 5 stars The author is a master, SO you'll learn something from him........2005-08-19

I honestly consider myself to be a good chess amateur and through my experience with chess study & tournaments, I honestly think this book is worth buying in order to inch yourself off the plateau you may be experiencing. It's cheap and you'll learn from this master something new that you didn't already know.
I have to say it does lean toward being pretentious in trying to address life issues in it's overly cursory manner (200 times), but the book's second part is very ground-breaking in that it makes you look at yourself as a chess player and gets you to consider things about yourself that may be getting in your own way as you wonder, "Why haven't I been getting any better at chess"? I've been studying chessbooks for 9 years now, and I've never come across one that made me look at myself as a chess player the way this one does. It really helped me get over the blitz clock hump (see the chapter on Using Time) and here's a bonus from me; to improve your blitz game, constantly look at the clock while you play and make good time management of your clock compared to your opponent's clock (so many players don't look at the clock until it gets down to one and a half to one minute. They're simply waiting for their opponent's clock to run out of time. You have to use the clock along the way constantly).

You have to pay attention to the chapter headings as you make your way through this book. It's evident that Kurzdorfer wanted to make this a short book with very effective short chapters.

As for the writers of the earlier reviews (those who hated this book)... I've noticed that people who consider themselves experts at certain things (and every man will claim himself to be a great expert at chess [a claim that only ranks second to sexual prowess]) tend to act as if they think that basic or intermediate teachings are not worth being taught. Such "experts" just flip through the first half of this book and deem it completely worthless because they already know the basics, but this book's part one does have some upper-level fundamentals. Go ahead. Add this book to your personal chess library. Kurzdorfer is a master. You'll learn some things.
If you're like me, you'll learn a lot. Here's a tip: go through it a second time as a read-through and you'll learn even more!

1 out of 5 stars A lame book in every way........2005-06-27

This is a quick read, being a little over 200 pages, but it is both too short and too long. It is too short on explanations for various principles that are listed inside, and it is too long because of the obvious attempt at reaching the magic number 200 for a nice sub-title to the book. Each principle is given a number and a title, then a brief example of a single Chess position is shown (more often than not a middle-game position); a short synopsis of possible continuations is given, and after all the Chess talk is done for that principle there is a set of symbols in the form of Chess pieces followed by a 'Tao' section usually comprised of one or two sentences describing how the particular Chess principle is analogous to situations we find ourselves in in everyday life. The problem with this 'Tao' part is that it is mostly comprised of philosophical, sanctimonious rubbish in many instances having only a thin connection between the ideas. I actually took to skipping the 'Tao' parts about midway through the book because I got tired of rolling my eyes at all the 'depth' behind the analogies. The principles themselves are frequently threadbare and not very interesting as a result; and the 'Tao' sections are eventually nothing more than annoying filler in an otherwise uninspired text. I am reading a much more detailed Chess book at the moment by Irving Chernev entitled "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played--62 Masterpieces of Chess Strategy." I've only gone through game 5 so far and I have already gained more instruction than in all of "The Tao of Chess," 200 principles combined! "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" by Robert M. Snyder is also worth checking out. Do yourself a big financial favor and avoid buying "The Tao of Chess." Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars Too ambitious for a little book........2005-01-20

Besides a couples of well-known and less-known principles, the rest is just like Collins' Maxims of Chess. Even older, Maxims has better analysis. There are not much Taos or life in this book. I couldn't find Taos. With many times reading, I found some Well-hidden applications for life. I got Mammoth World Greatest Chess Games the same time for 12.95 USD; comparing the quality, Tao of Chess is worth about 2.25 USD.
Good luck to all, if you find more Tao and Life then I do.

      Book Description

Desire, virtue, courtesans (also known as sing-song girls), and the denizens of Shanghai's pleasure quarters are just some of the elements that constitute Han Bangqing's extraordinary novel of late imperial China. Han's richly textured, panoramic view of late-nineteenth-century Shanghai follows a range of characters from beautiful sing-song girls to lower-class prostitutes and from men in positions of social authority to criminals and ambitious young men recently arrived from the country. Considered one of the greatest works of Chinese fiction, The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai is now available for the first time in English.

Neither sentimental nor sensationalistic in its portrayal of courtesans and their male patrons, Han's work inquires into the moral and psychological consequences of desire. Han, himself a frequent habitué of Shanghai brothels, reveals a world populated by lonely souls who seek consolation amid the pleasures and decadence of Shanghai's demimonde. He describes the romantic games played by sing-song girls to lure men, as well as the tragic consequences faced by those who unexpectedly fall in love with their customers. Han also tells the stories of male patrons who find themselves emotionally trapped between desire and their sense of propriety.

First published in 1892, and made into a film by Hou Hsiao-hsien in 1998, The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai is recognized as a pioneering work of Chinese fiction in its use of psychological realism and its infusion of modernist sensibilities into the traditional genre of courtesan fiction. The novel's stature has grown with the recent discovery of Eileen Chang's previously unknown translation, which was unearthed among her papers at the University of Southern California. Chang, who lived in Shanghai until 1956 when she moved to California and began to write in English, is one of the most acclaimed Chinese writers of the twentieth century.

        Book Description

This uniquely comprehensive assessment of the role of the media before, during and after wars draws on examples from the 20th century's "total wars" as well as "limited wars," terrorist campaigns, and complex emergencies such as Rwanda and Somalia. It argues that the media's performance in wartime may result as much from peacetime journalistic practices as from the special circumstances of war. The book concludes by assessing the impact of new communications technology and how the representation of future wars is likely to differ from those in the past.

Ms. Carruthers has put together an invaluable resource for anybody interested in the interaction of media, governments and militaries during times of war and conflict. In looking back at what I've just read, I find that I've underlined and highlighted passages throughout the book for future reference. Those who study the topic in detail (or just want to learn more after reading this book) will find the bibliography extremely useful. I've added a dozen more titles to my list of "must-read" books thanks to her exhaustive research. The book is also very well organized and written, covering the topic using the full spectrum of war -- from total war to terrorism -- which is much more useful than a simple chronoligical view often found in histories of this type. Overall, Ms. Carruthers has written an important book that adds significantly to the scholarly work in this field. As one who works with both the international media and militaries from several nations, this book has earned a spot on the top of the reference pile sitting on my desk and will undoubtedly be worn out in short order.

          Book Description

Emotions are back. Once at the center of the study of politics, emotions have receded into the shadows during the past three decades, with no place in the rationalistic, structural, and organizational models that dominate academic political analysis.

With this new collection of essays, Jeff Goodwin, James M. Jasper, and Francesca Polletta reverse this trend, reincorporating emotions such as anger, indignation, fear, disgust, joy, and love into research on politics and social protest. The tools of cultural analysis are especially useful for probing the role of emotions in politics, the editors and contributors to Passionate Politics argue. Moral outrage, the shame of spoiled collective identities, or the joy of imagining a new and better society, are not automatic responses to events. Rather, they are related to moral institutions, felt obligations and rights, and information about expected effects, all of which are culturally and historically variable.

With its look at the history of emotions in social thought, examination of the internal dynamics of protest groups, and exploration of the emotional dynamics that arise from interactions and conflicts among political factions and individuals, Passionate Politics will lead the way toward an overdue reconsideration of the role of emotions in social movements and politics generally.

          4 out of 5 stars Paradigm shift?.......2002-11-09

Written by prominent scholars of social movements, this book explore the role of emotions in contentious politics. The first 3 chapters offer very interesting theoretical insights that somewhat lacked in previous accounts of emotions and social movements. The numerous case studies tackle a good variety of movements but I would argue that their theoretical and empirical quality varies greatly (emotions are not easily studied scientifically). Many argues that we are now witnessing a paradigm shift in social movements studies from rationality to culture and emotions; I am not convinced however that it is exactly what is going on. I would argue that if we are witnessing the dissolution of strong rationalist approaches, the resultant is not merely a return of pendulum toward the study of emotions but rather the emergence of numerous fields once muted by the dominant theories. One thing is sure however, the study of emotions in social movements is clearly one of the most interesting new avenues open to social scientists.

              Book Description

From the dense forests of the Big Thicket to the limitless vistas of the Davis Mountains, Texas is a land of astonishing diversity and natural beauty. Yet it is also a land where commuters endure endless traffic jams in the major cities and where pollution and environmental degradation threaten the most essential elements of our common living space--the land, air, and water. In this thoughtful, practical book, Pete Gunter and Max Oelschlaeger offer a new vision for living on the land, a "land ethic" that respects the stability, integrity, and beauty of the "land community." Avoiding harsh rhetoric that seeks only to place blame and foretell doom, they discuss how economic and environmental goals may be reconciled so that Texans can continue to enjoy a reasonable prosperity while living in a land free of pollutants and scars, where some wild lands still exist and animals range freely. In presenting their land ethic, the authors draw on the ideas of Aldo Leopold, whose A Sand County Almanac persuasively urges human beings to respect the land--with all of its animal and plant inhabitants--that supports us. This is an ethic to take Texas into the twenty-first century, in which the wise choices we make now will create a stable and sustainable future.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful ideas for Texans........1999-04-29

The Texas Land Ethic is a very easy read. Based on Aldo Leopold's ideas on land ethics with a Texas twist, this book gives an insightful, entertaining view into Texas and her ecological and economic future. Texas Land Ethics breaks the state up into several regions discussing each region, its beauty, its limitations, its problems and its hopeful future. Several issues ranging from land planning to education are addressed and applied specifically to Texas. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Texas and saving her beautiful landscape and our Texas hertiage. I also recommend that every state offical making decisions that might possibly affect Texas and her environmental and economic future read this book and think carefully about its contents. A state wide land ethic taught throughout all the schools and universites could possibly be the key to preserving this beautiful state now and forever.
