Interesting, but..........2005-07-08
I enjoyed reading this book; I think I read it in four, five hours. It was a good book, but since Athina has been shielded from the public for most of her life, there really isn't much to write about her life. The majority of the book is about Aristotle and his empire.
Great Book!!.......2005-02-24
This is a great book on the heiress Athina Onassis and the Onassis family. We all wish you well!!
Book Description
Ever wonder what it takes to raise a champion-in sports, in work, or in life?
Discover the secrets of triumphant parenting--and raising a child who excels.
Summer Sanders won more medals than any other American swimmer at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. After retiring, she has continued to charm America as a TV commentator and media celebrity. And wherever she goes, parents ask: what gave her the drive to consistently give all she had, no matter what the challenge? How did she develop her self-assurance and raw courage? What did her parents do right?
Now Summer Sanders provides compelling, surprisingly simple answers for all parents--whether your child is gifted in sports, in school, or the arts--from the unique perspective of a child who became the world's best in her field. Enriched by advice from a host of other Olympic athletes,
Champions Are Raised, Not Born reveals what truly develops a champion.
How to recognize a child's true talent.
How to provide family support (even if parents are divorced).
How to nurture mental toughness and self-confidence.
How to encourage your child to become a team player.
How to help your child realize her dream without sacrificing her childhood.
Winning, losing, and getting both right in life.
Customer Reviews:
What about faith?.......2005-12-29
It's hard to rate Sander's book. If you're a secular humanist, then fine, 5 stars. If you're a Christian, watch out, 3 at best, unless you classify it as a counter-example. I bought the book to try to help my daughter get the most out of athletics, but what I found was an eye-opener. The arguments are filled with reasoning that undermines the Christian faith: 1. You can do anything if you set your mind to it. A nice can-do attitude, but what about the grace of God? Summer forgot that she never had a debilitating traffic accident (try getting Olympic swimming gold with one leg) or a disease (thyroiditis will leave you in bed, not in a pool swimming laps) or a random act of violence against her. She, plus her parental guidance, were all that was needed. Hmmm... 2. Next is the issue of pure selfishness. Who really benefits from her pursuit of gold? Summer. Hours each day serving one person - yourself - when you could be serving others. I don't see another way to slice that. She makes a weak argument that not using your skill is selfish. Well, if you have a great physical talent, use if for something physically challenging that will help other people (armed forces, police, construction, anything). 3. The problem with spectator sports in general is (and yes, I'm a man and I don't watch sports) that the essence of sports is pride - showing that you are "better" than everyone else. Sanders pretty much states that this was her goal. Well, pride is one of the things that God hates the most. So to make your life's pursuit the goal of showing you are better than everyone else at anything is a pretty hollow existence. It's not surprising then that her second career choice is broadcasting ("look at me!" all over again). 4. Letting the kid call the shots - I let my child make decisions based on her age. I don't assume she has more wisdom than I. I would discourage my kid from taking four or more hours per day, outside of school, in a selfish, prideful pursuit. (And lastly, let's not forget that the parable of "talents" in the Bible is one of the most widely misunderstood and misapplied passages. Its meaning is in using your talents to expand the kingdom of God, not in expanding the glorification of yourself.)
Sure, she makes some good points - let the kids have fun, don't push, enjoy the experience. But in my book, the Sanders parents failed.
Summer's Olympic Wins were a product of her Family's Support.......2004-06-01
In Summer Sander's book Champions are Raised, not Born she talks about her life and how her parents affected it. Summer believed that the measure of a true champion I show well they take a defeat and Summer was about to take them in stride. Summer believed that her four Olympic medals were not just from her hard work but from the support of her parents and coaches also. Her childhood wasn't easy with the divorce of her parents but no matter whose house she was at she had both of their support. In her childhood swimming was just something she did to make friends and take up time but it ended up changing her whole life.
In this book Summer gives specific examples of how her parents helped her to be successful. What's good about this book it that Summer also talks about how her life was like other Olympians. She talks bout how her life was different or similar to Dot Richardson, Karch Kiraly, and Bonnie Blair. It makes the readers realize that Olympic athletes' childhoods are not very different from the average persons. Summer proves that everyone can become an Olympic athlete you don't have to come from the perfect family.
Another thing that was good about the book was that Summer didn't just talk about the good times but also the bad ones. She didn't give the impression that her life easy perfect because the struggles made her stronger. No on e can live the perfect life because no matter how close they still have problems. Summer talks about the divorce of her parents as well as losses in major swim meets. There are the good times in her life but these are not the only tings that have made her who she is today.
Couldn't put it down.......2003-08-11
As a former swimmer and as a parent of 3 age-groups swimmers I figured this book would provide some insight into success. However, i didn't anticipate how much insight I would take away from it. It is truly amazing how much Ms. Sanders had been able to accomplish in her life and it is refreshing to see that someone so young had everything in the proper perspective.
Hats off to her parents for raising and supporting (without pushing) Summer to accomplish all that she set out to do. I see the parents on the side of the pool who constantly push their kids so much so that they ultimately push them totally out of the pool all together. This is a fantastic how-to book for parents, regardless of what their kids are into.
Good Info.......2003-04-26
While not the most organized book ever written, Summer Sander's discussion is insightful and balanced. There are no "a-ha" moments that will blow you away, but a whole bunch of minor insights that add up to a lot. Great reading for any parent of an athlete, from a star to an also-ran.
Great Parents Guide.......2001-09-28
Every parent should read this book. I am on my third time reading it and learn something new everytime.

Book Description
In the year 1632 things couldn't get much worse in northern Germany. There was no food. Disease was rampant. For over a decade religious war had ravaged the land and the people. Catholic and Protestant armies marched and countermarched across the northern plains, laying waste the cities and slaughtering everywhere. In the year 2000 things are going OK in Grantville, West Virginia. Everybody is attending the wedding of Mike Stearn's sister (including the entire membership of the local chapter of the United Mine Workers of America, which Mike leads) and is having a good time. Then, everything changed
When the dust settles; a small group of armed miners go out to find out what's going on. Out past the edge of town Grantville's asphalt road is cut, as with a sword. On the other side, a scene out of Hell; a man nailed to a farmhouse door, his wife and daughter lying screaming in muck at the center of a ring of attentive men in steel vests. Faced with this, the people from Grantville don't have to ask who to shoot. At that moment Freedom and Justice, American style, are introduced to the middle of The Thirty Years War.

Can you say "padding"?.......2006-04-13
This role playing game uses the Action! System, a freely downloadable and cost free game system which comprises more than sixty percent of what you are paying for.
Only 78 pages are *original* material ... the remaining 131 include the cover, the ACTION! System rules and graphics that are not game specific and which, indeed, seem to be mostly clip art used randomly for no better reason than to fill up space.
The layout is full of widows and orphans, needlessly so ... why? For the simple reason that the illustrations used to randomly pepper the pages (and it seems, for the most part, random) are so poorly placed and sized as to make this inevitable. Tables are similarly poorly placed and sized.
There is no rhyme or reason to picture size ... some are a column width, some less than a column width, some a column and a fraction. All could have been standard sized. Tables are also randomly sized, even when single column or double column sizing would have been easier (and more sightly!) to use.
Several text/other boxes are skewed, set at a slight but noticeable angle off 90 degrees, which is probably meant to look cool. However, for example, on page #23 this actually *causes* a worse orphan than the poorly considered layout already does! And the few other examples, more often than not, simply look *ugly*.
The art. That’s a subject all by itself. There are some good, obviously purpose drawn for the book pieces ... many of which are used again ... and again ... and again ... and again ... four or five times in some cases. Says a lot about why the layout sucks, doesn't it?
A lot of the rest is clip-art, or seems to be, and it is used badly. A lot of it seems to be used for no better reason than to fill up space and boost the page count. Which, of course, would be another reason why the purpose drawn for the book pieces are used multiple times.
And even there, there’s the map of Grantville and the circle of territory around it. Instead of a single page or, indeed, a double page, layout for it ... or even a single large sheet insert ... it’s split into quarters over four pages. In the middle of the book. And no, not in colour, and with nothing much in the way of detail that would justify the use of four pages. Or even two, for that matter.
Can anyone say “padding?”
None of this makes the product unplayable ... simply poorly laid out.
So, in value for money terms ... it doesn't work for me.
Wonderful...if you're familiar with the material.......2005-02-14
This book is a guide for a Role Playing Game (RPG) set in the universe of Eric Flint's 1632 series. People not familiar with that series or not interested in playing the game in this book will not enjoy it. Those conditions being fulfilled, the book is a tremendous resource for those who love the story of 1632. The book contains detailed maps, information about the time period, and an original story set in the 1632 universe, written by author John Zeek. Further information can be had at the Baen Bar (http://bar.baen.com), under the section "1632 Tech Manual."
Book Description
An exclusive look at one of the world's most successful and controversial companies, and the mysterious family behind it.
BMW is arguably the most admired carmaker in the world. It's financial performance is the envy of its competitors, and BMW products inspire near-fanatical loyalty. While many carmakers struggle with falling sales, profits and market share, demand for BMWs continues to grow, frequently outpacing production. Now, David Kiley-Detroit Bureau Chief at USA Today and author of Getting the Bugs Out, which covered Volkswagen's demise and rebirth, goes inside the fabled German automaker to see how it does what it does so well. With unprecedented access to BMW executives, Kiley goes behind the walls of BMW's famed "Four Cylinders" headquarters in Munich at a time when the company is in its most aggressive, and some say riskiest, expansion in its history and when some of the company's new products, like the 7 Series sedan and Z4 roadster, are for the first time drawing as many barbs from critics as bouquets. Kiley covers intimate details of the boardroom drama surrounding the company's nearly disastrous acquisition and subsequent sale of the British Rover Group and its expansion into selling MINI and Rolls Royce cars. Besides being a world-class carmaker, BMW is also considered one of the smartest consumer marketing companies and Kiley explores the extraordinary value and management of the BMW brand mystique. He also takes a revealing look at the mysterious and ultra-private Quandt family of Bad Homburg Germany, which owns a controlling stake in BMW: Johanna and Susanne Quandt, two of the wealthiest women in Europe and Stefan Quandt, one of the wealthiest bachelors on the continent.
David Kiley (Ann Arbor, MI) is the Detroit Bureau Chief at USA Today who has covered the auto industry for 17 years. He has been featured on Nightline, CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the Today show. He is also the author of Getting the Bugs Out: The Rise, Fall, and Comeback of Volkswagen in America (0-471-26304-4), also available from Wiley.

Ultimate Bore.......2006-08-02
300 pages of BMW. It should be ultimate bliss for any car enthusiast. But it turns out to be a bit of a drag, like a car stuck in third gear, promises that it has the power to go, but just cannot deliver the power.
The book is a fairly good history of how an aircraft manufacturing company with known prowess in making aircraft engines, went almost defunct during the WWII and than came back to first be seen as a serious car maker, than as a car brand that could compete with the famed Merc and than went on to overtake the Merc is global sweepstakes. And its subsequent buyout of Rolls, Mini and Rover too is well detailed out. And while the famed Bavarian company was able to turn on the magic for Rolls and Mini, its travails and failure to make good Rover too are well captured.
The book is divided in eight ultimate chapters. The Ultimate Cars, The Ultimate History, The Ultimate Family, The Ultimate Brand, The ultimate Stylists, The Ultimate Blunder, The Ultimate brand Expansion, and the Ultimate Hydrogen Future.
David had had ultimate access to the BMW executives and archives. This access comes through in almost every page in the book. The book goes into a painfully detailed history of company events. And instead of giving insights into what makes BMW a marvel of automobile engineering, we get a chronology of events.
Unfortunately David Kiley, is no Jeremy Clarkeson and Driven is not like "Born to be Riled". The book is too much of PR plug, with author seeing only side of the picture. But do read the book to know how fickle minded advertising pitch decisions are, and what led to the memorable BMW films campaign.
The book has its moments, but its few and far in between.
There may be no boring BMW, but there is a boring BMW book.
Nice history, boring read,.......2005-08-31
As an auto industry follower, I can appreciate this book as a sort of historical reference for someone perhaps doing research. But as enjoyable reading, it falls far short. The book goes into a painfully detailed history of company events. In fact, I felt the title was a bit misleading, since it made me expect some interpretation as to why BMW is as admired as it is. Instead you basically get a chronology of events.
Poor workmanship and limited insights.......2004-09-02
Despite his years of experience as an auto journalist, Kiley is a sloppy writer, doesn't seem to have a clue about the mechanics and history of automobiles, and provides little in the way of new insights into what has made BMW successful.
To give one example, he asserts that in the late 1960s BMW was unique in offering a wide range of engines in its cars and boosting the power of said engines almost yearly. In fact, both were standard Detroit practices at the time. This error is a byproduct of Kiley's urge to gush about everything BMW has ever done. Apparently the company's inarguable achievements are not enough--he must create additional "firsts" for it.
To give another, I'll quote Kiley from page 12: "The higher the horsepower and the lighter the vehicle, the easier it is for engineers to achieve better low-end torque (power at low revolutions of the engine)." Sorry, but the weight of the vehicle has absolutely nothing to do with the torque curve of the engine. In addition, high horsepower usually comes at the expense of low-end torque because of inherent tradeoffs in engine intake system design.
More troubling, all of the material is not Kiley's own. One poorly written section on Active Steering (a recent technical innovation that Kiley inaccurately credits entirely to BMW) left me wondering whether my own understanding of the system was incomplete (it was). So I Googled "steering transmission ratio" and found Kiley's words verbatim on a website that predates the book.
I don't know if this site was Kiley's source, or if both plagiarized a common source--quite likely some PR materials from BMW--but we've got plagiarism either way, as Kiley presents the words as his own. The sections in question are in brackets below:
"Active steering [varies the steering transmission ratio electronically in direct relation to the style and speed of driving and road conditions. Under normal road conditions at low and medium speeds, the steering becomes more direct, requiring less steering effort of the driver] and [increasing the car's agility in city traffic or when parking. At high speeds the steering becomes less direct offering improved directional stability]--less lane waver[. When cornering at high speeds, or when undertaking sudden movements, the steering stiffens up by monitoring increases in the yaw rate]--the side-to-side movement of the car."
"[When the system's sensors detect driver input at the steering wheel (turning motion), a computer analyzes the data and then sends the information to an electric motor and linkage. Based on this input, the front wheels are turned the appropriate amount.]"
The above bits were adapted from the website to mirror Kiley's text by adding the few words outside the brackets but inside the quotes. In the case of his defintion of "yaw," Kiley's additions aren't even correct. Kiley also adds or removes a comma here and there, but last time I checked this is not enough to make words one's own.
If, as I suspect, both accounts are copied from a common source, then even more of Kiley's text was likely lifted verbatim from this source. The sad thing is, the way Kiley has cut-and-pasted yields a redundant and confusing explanation of Active Steering. He doesn't understand enough about his subject to properly "borrow" material about it.
The portions of the book about BMW as an organization fail to provide much insight into what goes on inside BMW. Kiley relies heavily on interviews with BMW executives, and these can hardly be expected to provide a thorough, balanced portrayal. As might be expected, they instead present a thoroughly massaged, idealized view of the company thoroughly lacking in telling detail. BMW's PR firm might as well have written this book.
Kiley's thesis that the consistent pursuit of a focused, coherent product strategy leads to organizational success is not a new one, but it is one I've always personally stressed. However, Kiley too placidly assumes that BMW continues to pursue such a strategy. Rather, the bizarre styling and high-tech features of the latest BMWs represent deviations from the company's traditional focus. A much more interesting, more insightful book would have acknowledged and more thoroughly analyzed these deviations rather than patly accepting the company's position.
Nice history, boring read.......2004-08-18

Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-08-04
Anyone who has ever driven a BMW wonders why the car feels so uncannily nimble and supple. Automotive journalist David Kiley answers that question with an intriguing book that strikes just the right balance between gearhead details, behind-the-scenes corporate maneuvering and compelling story telling. Along the way, Kiley offers insight into BMW's mostly successful efforts to build its brand. While Kiley sings BMW's praises, and presents a convincing case that BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) produces the world's best cars, he doesn't shy away from the details of the owning family's ups and downs, the company's disastrous Rover deal or the public's tepid response to its latest redesigns. We recommend this fascinating book to auto enthusiasts and to managers in any industry who aim to build a brand while staying true to their core values.

Interesting and comprehensive.......2006-08-21
The Beautiful Beast is an interesting and comprehensive narrative of the life of Irma Grese, one of the most notorious female guards in the Nazi concentration camps. Dan Brown has done an excellent job of researching her life, activities, and the consequences in this book. As one who researches women in the Holocaust, I strongly recommend this book to all who are interested in this era.
Shoddy scholorship.......2006-05-03
There is far more information available on the internet on Irma Grese than there is in this book.
The author claims to have spoken to family members and describes her family as Disfunctional. He reports she may have been used as a sexual plaything by the hospital staff at the clinic. He spends more time telling the reader not to feel sorry for her than he does anything else.
However, for somebody who claims to have interviewed members of Grese's family, he fails to report a few things that have since surfaced such as the fact that her mother didn't just die when she was twelve years old, She Committed Suicide.
Overall, this work is rather pathetic as a work of scholorship.
Disturbing yet Alluring.......2004-03-26
A beautiful farm girl becomes an SS guard at a notorious concentration camp. Her brutality included choosing who would go to the gas chamber, beatings, whippings, and perverted, bi-sexual pleasures. Hung at the age of 22, she proclaimed her innocence to the end saying she was only carrying out orders of her superiors.
Very interesting.......2002-03-04
I got a very interesting look into the life of one of the persons belonging to the low ranks of the helpers to SS. As a testimony of what one of this helpers were capable doing - which led to her hanging after after The Belsen Trial in Germany - it should not be underestimated. This Grese has become some sort of cult figure among the neo nazis although they claim the Holocaust never existed or is undervalued. Strange that neo nazis undervalue what the Führer, Himmler and others like Grese did. Read it!
Fantastic.......1999-10-10
I thought this book was a acurate book of the concratration camps. This was a very deep book and had to be one of the greatest books I've ever read

How can people feel secure again? What roles do citizens play in today's national security? Written by former White House advisor and Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Clinton administration, this book covers doubts that one may have about today's national security after the difficult times the continent has gone through since September 11th.

This book, arising from over twenty years experience of working with the world's major faiths, draws extensively upon joint World Bank and ARC/WWF projects world wide. It shows, through stories, land management, myths, investment policies, legends, advocacy and celebration, the role the major faiths have , do and can play in making the world a better place. The major faiths are the oldest institutions in the world and have survived essentially because they are constantly evolving and changing. There is much to be learnt by newer institutions such as the World Bank and the multitudes of NGOs about how to remain true to what you believe but change and grow as you develop. The book explores issues of climate change, forestry, asset management, education and biodiversity protection and does so using the techniques of the great faiths - storytelling, example and celebration. It reveals a variety of world views and it asks us to see that our personal view, may be just one amongst many. The challenge of living with integrity in a pluralist world underlies the book and it offers models of how diversity is crucial in attempting to ensure we have a sustainable world.

Excellent and Moving.......2006-12-10
Martin, as secretary general of Alliance of Religions and Conservation, is an authority in conservation. He works with Prince Phillip (husband of Queen Elizabeth). Martin is educated in theology at Cambridge. He's a good writer and excellent analyst. His book also features statements by authorities of eleven major religions regarding ecology and the environment.
If anyone thinks that religions play a marginal role in ecology, or even society, read this book. Martin's approach is reasoned, intelligent, and practical. I hope the world's political, relgious, and science leaders will use his work, and that of Prince Phillip and the many others mentioned, to put in place schemes that counteract humanity's tendency to destroy and exploit our mother nature. [flame on] Many in the U.S. are proud of the rule of law, while at the same time masking the fact that their rule of law is a veneer that covers the plundering, raping, and destroying of nature. It may not be important to discover who is responsible for these crimes against nature--whether it be unbridled scientism, human lust, or religious indifference--however; it is important to take bold action on every level. Religion plays an essential part, because science, politics, and economics do not have the moral track record. Modern, non-religious people are quick to judge the historical weaknesses of religion, but people must awaken to the fact that this time the non-religious institutions are primarily responsible for the greatest crimes of our time. For example, a religious war, although not to be condoned, does not compare with the threat against humanity perpetrated by the build-up of 300 years of destroying and exploiting nature. [flame off] Therefore, let's look to the world's religions to provide the moral guidance. For the most part, religions emphasize the moral and spiritual utility of nature, and that emphasis balances current materialistic views of nature.
I reiterate that Martin Palmer intelligently, authoritatively, and practically communicates essential issues, and indeed some extremely interesting solutions. Martin is a gentleman. Look to his book for solutions, for actions that can be applied today!
