Why?.......2004-02-09
The question is obvious, why does Diamond Dallas Page even have a book? I can't answer that one. If he has a book then why doesn't Marty Jannetty, Pat Tanaka, Buff Bagwell or even Scotty Riggs? Why don't they? Because with all due respect nobody would want to read a full book about these wrestlers. Certainly one shoot interview on video or 4 page one on the Internet would be enough for a fan. Just like Bill Goldberg, Page is another guy who was convinced by Eric Bischoff that they were a star and even though he is by the way one of the worst champions of all time according to the ratings, Page bought it.
This book was the fire back from WCW to the WWF at the time for having Mick Foley's book. Well if that is the case, that is a bigger joke of a fireback then the debut of the Maestro. If you are looking to buy a good wrestling autobiography, pass on this one at the bookstore. It is a terrible book!

Hungarian Cinema: From Coffee House to Multiplex
John Cunningham Manufacturer: Wallflower Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1903364795 |
Book Description
Hungarian cinema has often been forced to tread a precarious and difficult path. Through the failed 1919 revolution to the defeat of the 1956 Uprising and its aftermath, Hungarian film-makers and their audiences have had to contend with a multiplicity of problems. In the 1960s, however, Hungary entered into a period of relative stability and increasing cultural relaxation, resulting in an astonishing growth of film-making. Innovative and groundbreaking directors such as Miklós Jancsó ( Hungarian Rhapsody, The Red and the White), István Szabó ( Mephisto, Sunshine) and Márta Mészaros ( Little Vilma: The Last Diary) emerged and established the reputation of Hungarian films on a global basis. This is the first book to discuss all major aspects of Hungarian cinema, including avant-garde, animation, and representations of the Gypsy and Jewish minorities.

Britten's Gloriana Essays and Sources (Aldeburgh Studies in Music)
Manufacturer: Boydell Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851153402 |
Book Description
Aldeburgh Studies in Music is a new series published jointly by Boydell & Brewer and the Britten-Pears Library, Aldeburgh. It will focus on musical topics reflecting the distinctive musical life and heritage of Aldeburgh, primarily addressingscholars and students. The present volume is based on a selection of papers presented during a study course devoted to Gloriana held at the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in 1991. Glorianahas been a source of controversy since its première as part of the Coronation celebrations in 1953. It was planned as a national opera of broad appeal by its authors, Benjamin Britten and William Plomer, but, despite wide coverage in the media, the opera failed to establish itself in the repertoire until a new production in 1966 revealed it to be a powerful and stageworthy work. In recent years it has attracted an increasing amount of scholarly attention. This volume offers essays by ROBERT HEWISON, PHILIP REED, ANTONIA MALLOY, DONALD MITCHELL and PETER EVANS which explore the opera's cultural background, the early stages of its creative evolution, the first critical responses, and various aspects of the work itself: these are supplemented by a list of source materials for the opera and the works derived from it, and an extensive bibliography.Opera North's recent revival of `Gloriana' has without question restored this neglected masterpiece to its place in Britten's operatic output. Far from being a triumphalist work in tune with the Coronation celebrations of 1953, `Gloriana' showed an ageing Elizabeth torn between love and duty, Essex and her crown; the subtle message of the sovereign's mystical marriage to the people eluded the first night audience.

Traveling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary
Alberto Granado Manufacturer: Newmarket Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1557046395 |
Book Description
Published for the first time in the U.S.one of the two diaries on which the movie The Motorcycle Diaries is basedthe moving and at times hilarious account of Che Guevara and Alberto Granado's eight-month tour of South America in 1952.In 1952 Alberto Granado, a young doctor, and his friend Ernesto Guevara, a 23-year-old medical student from a distinguished Buenos Aires family, decided to explore their continent. They set off from Cordoba in Argentina on a Norton 500cc motorbike and traveled through Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. The duo's adventures vary from the suspenseful (stowing away on a cargo ship, exploring Incan ruins) to the comedic (falling in love, drinking, fighting...) to the serious (volunteering as firemen and at a leper colony). They worked as day laborers along the wayas soccer coaches, medical assistants, and furniture movers. The poverty and exploitation of the native population started the process that was to turn Ernestothe debonair, fun-loving studentinto Che, the revolutionary who had a profound impact on the history of several nations.
Originally published in Spanish in Cuba in 1978, the first English translation was published by Random House UK in 2003. The movie, based on Granado's and Che's diaries, directed by Walter Salles (Central Station, Behind the Sun), was produced by Robert Redford and others. Shown at the Sundance Film Festival, it generated great reviews and a frenzied auction for distribution rights, which was won by Focus Features. Granado, now 82, was a consultant to Salles during the production. 10 b/w photos.

All the Pashas Men: Mehmed Ali His Army and the Making of Modern Egypt
Khaled Fahmy Manufacturer: American University in Cairo Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 9774246969 Release Date: 2002-03-01 |
Product Description
While scholarship has traditionally viewed Mehmed Ali Pasha as the founder of modern Egypt, Khaled Fahmy offers a new interpretation of his role in the rise of Egyptian nationalism, firmly locating him within the Ottoman context as an ambitious, if problematic, Ottoman reformer. Basing his work on previously neglected archival material, the author demonstrates how Mehmed Ali sought to develop the Egyptian economy and to build up the army, not as a means of gaining Egyptian independence from the Ottoman empire, but to further his own ambitions for recognized hereditary rule over the province. By focusing on the army and the soldier's daily experiences, the author constructs a detailed picture of attempts at modernization and reform, how they were planned and implemented by various reformers, and how the public at large understood and accommodated them. In this way, the work contributes to the larger methodological and theoretical debates concerning nation-building and the construction of state power in the particular context of early nineteenth-century Egypt.Customer Reviews:

Moose: Behavior, Ecology, Conservation
Valerius Geist Manufacturer: Voyageur Press (MN) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Amazon.com
The moose, the largest living member of the family that includes deer and elk, is the beneficiary of a rare change of environmental fortune that has worked out to nature's advantage. Thanks to careful conservation policies, the moose has expanded its range significantly in the last century, growing in numbers and spreading beyond its native range throughout subarctic North America and Eurasia to new homes in the southern Rocky Mountains and southern Scandinavia.Russian-born scientist Valerius Geist, a longtime contributor to National Geographic and other popular publications, here offers a highly readable, affectionate, and entertaining natural history of the moose. In text accompanied by Michael Francis's color photographs, Geist explains why moose are small in some places and large in others (the more mature the plant environment in which it lives, the smaller the moose); discusses migratory patterns, mating habits, social organization, and other aspects of ecology; and honors the moose's highly developed intelligence ("moose," he writes, "are programmed for learning"). With continued conservation efforts and continued goodwill on the part of humans, Geist foresees a healthy future for the moose, even in the face of global climate change that threatens the creature's favored habitats. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
In outstanding photos and authoritative text, Moose covers the natural history of moose around the world, including range, diet, personality traits, breeding, social structure, and their interaction with humans both today and in history. Geist, a zoologist and professor, details the threats they face, and he passionately pleads for their preservation. Moose also includes sidebars and appendices, plus a list of organizations involved in moose issues. For moose hunters, naturalists, & wildlife photographers.Valerius Geist of Port Alberni, British Columbia is the author of Voyageur Press' Buffalo Nation: History and Legend of the North American Bison and Mountain Sheep, for which he won the 1972 Book of the Year Award from The Wildlife Society. He has also been a consultant to the National Geographic Society on several books and television specials.
Michael H. Francis of Billings, Montana is an internationally recognized wildlife photographer whose work has appeared in dozens of books and magazines. His images appeared in Voyageur Press' A Wilderness Called Grand Canyon, Black Bear: Seasons in the Wild, Buffalo Nation, Grizzly Bears, Eagles: Masters of the Sky, Majestic Whitetails, Majestic Elk, and many others.

Fantastic!.......2006-12-18
Fascinating look at a fascinating creature.......2001-02-04
Dr. Geist is a renown expert in cervid biology and conservation. His expertise regarding moose ecology in North America and Eurasia shines through every page of this book. He has the rare ability to combine personal experiences with potentially dry biology information to produce very readable prose. I truly enjoyed this text! The accompanying photos were also spectacular. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the moose.
A scientific journey of discovery.......1999-12-14
I know of no wildlife biologist with greater depth of knowledge and creative insight, or greater courage and dedication in applying his knowledge to the challenge of real world conservation.
Coming full circle, Geist has finally writen an entire book devoted to the moose, an animal whose behavior he (like I) studied extensively during his youth.
We who have had the pleasure of reading his numerous other books and scientific papers know that each leads the reader on a rare and delightful intellectual journey of discovery. His insights are always fresh and vibrant, built on an extraordinarily wide knowledge of the literature combined with in depth firsthand knowledge. This book is no exception.
To any reader seriously interested in moose or just wildlife in general, this work is an extraordinary find.
