Customer Reviews:
Well titled book...........2007-10-15
Accidental Adventurer by Barbara Washburn proves to be a well written autobiography. Her husband was late Bradford Washburn, a man of science as well as a explorer. Her book reflects her quiet lifestyle until she married this man and how that marriage totally transformed her, almost by accident, into a world wide adventurer, traveling with her husband from the depths of the Grand Canyon to the top of Mount McKinley (being the first woman to summit that peak in 1947). During the entire time, she was rising children, being a house wife and a teacher. Her life was definitely not boring and reading this book helps us understand how exciting it really was.
I found the book to be entertaining and fun. It shows how a wife can be a true partner with her husband in all things, not just at home but in the field. Barbara Washburn not only embraced her husband but his lifestyle and work. The trials and tribulations of both man and wife proves to be truly extraordinary and the book reflects on that life very clearly.
This is an easy book to recommend to anyone to read.

Do look now!.......2002-08-19
Ever since viewing Roeg's masterpiece 'Don't look now', i became obsessed by the man.
This book, in its deft construction which alternates interviews and analysis, pays hommage to the director and its sources of inspirations.
a 60's cult.......2000-04-14
A brilliant account of Roeg's films by the author of "Elevator Music". It takes a profound overview of an almost unknown filmmaker - a very cult one. Roeg's gems such as "Performance", "Petulia" and "Walkabout" are here criteriously analysed. Roeg is an authentic creator of surreal landscapes and plots, often mixing dreams and drug trips. If you're into mind-blowing stuff, that's well worth a look.

A very important reference for documentary information about the life of Schubert.......2005-11-08
Otto Erich Deutsch was a Viennese musicologist whose work on the Schubert thematic catalog led to the present way we identify Schubert's works. For example, D 911 (Deutsch 911) refers to the song cycle "Winterreise". It is natural that Deutsch would become interested in Schubert because many the collected works were published in his early life and lost works by Schubert, especially songs, were still being discovered. Schubert had died just short of his thirty-second birthday in 1828. But he was poor and his works were largely unpublished and the manuscripts were scattered among his friends, patrons, and who knows where.
This book collects all of the documents that mention Schubert, written about him or to him or by him. Since the composer had such a short life, it is arranged by year. There is some short introductory material about Schubert's family, and Vienna at the time of his birth. The book also has quite a few illustrations, maps, and photographs of things such as Schubert's glasses and various buildings that played a role in the composer's short life.
Anyone who wants to study the life of Schubert seriously will have to consult this book. I bought it when I was studying his work in graduate school and have always been glad that I have it. It is not a casual read, but when you need to consult some aspect of the composer's life and want to read the documentary source for what you read somewhere else, you will find it here.

I bought this for my 91 year old Grandmother for Christmas. She has always enjoyed reading, and loves word games to keep her mind active. Even though she needs to write down that I visited so she can remember to tell others who came to the house, she can still do a mean crossword puzzle! She said she'd be doing them all year until next Christmas!
Just when you need it the most...........2000-09-21
I purchased this book as a gift that fills a certain need. My mother-in-law LOVES crossword puzzles. Recently, however, she has had a serious loss of vision. This book gives her the challenge of newspaper crosswords while providing her with the fun of maintaining a passion. Bravo!

Managing Global Accounts (American Marketing Association)
ASIN: 074321188X |
Book Description
The vastly increased level of competitive intensity faced by corporations and the increased costs of selling have radically changed the nature of the traditional selling process. Key or "strategic" accounts have now become a company's most important asset, in some cases supplying in excess of 80 percent of a firm's revenues. Here, in one powerful volume, key account management expert Noel Capon provides the most comprehensive treatment of key account management and planning yet published.
For the first time, Capon introduces his breakthrough four-part "congruence model" of key account management -- a new, thoroughly researched approach to optimally managing your key account portfolio. First, the author shows how to select and conceptualize the key account portfolio; second, how to organize and manage key accounts; third, how to recruit, select, train, retain, and reward key account managers; and fourth, how to formulate and execute strategy and issues of coordination and control. This congruence model serves as a backdrop as Capon takes the reader step-by-step through the vital functions of key account management including identifying key account criteria, considering the threats and opportunities for the key account, and understanding the roles and responsibilities of critical players. Capon backs up his points with extensive research, real-life stories of successes and failures at a variety of companies, and clarifying figures. Special chapters are devoted to partnering with key accounts and in-depth information on global key account management, an increasingly important weapon for staying ahead of the competition.
Timely, important, and essential, Key Account Management and Planning is the only reference handbook those with key account responsibilities will ever need.

Wake me up when you're done writing.......2007-07-07
The sound you hear as you read this review is me snoring as I once again attempt to read this book.
I find it to be a snoozoid...but there is some context that would be valuable.
If your sales position is working with a handful of key accounts you should buy this book. Assuming you can read through it and not fall asleep it will likely be of value to you.
This book covers the key account management from all points of view.......2005-08-22
This book covers the key account management from all points of view. It is very useful for every key account manager because in the various chapters it handles every important issue that can be a part of key account management.

Thorough introduction to account management........2002-12-12
As a manager in a large international consulting firm, I've been exposed to a number of different issues in a key account management. This is one of the most thorough reviews of the subject I've come across.
The book spends about 30 pages covering the introduction to what Key Account Management is, and more importantly what it is not. It provides a balanced view to the benefits to both the customer and supplier firm, as well as instances where key account management may not be appropriate.
The bulk of the book (Part 2 and 3) covers key account analysis and planning. It devotes two entire chapters to key account analysis and supplier firm analysis/competitor analysis. These are perhaps the most valuable chapters in the book. Chapter 7 covers formulating and capturing the key account strategy -- from the vision and mission statements through action plans and resource committments. Part 2 also provides significant coverage of the various organizational issues around organizing for key account management.
Part 4 covers critical issues in key account management, including issues in partnering with your key accounts and a whirlwind treatment of issues related to global account management.
The content of the book (though dry) is good for a survey of the issues. A number of examples are provided to illustrate points, though some of these examples are fairly weak and could have easily been omitted. The exercises and appendices provided take up nearly 70 pages. The exercises are extremely helpful at boiling down analysis, planning and information requirements for improving key account plans. The appendices provide exposition and further examples to back up the content.
Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who is new to account management and looking for a very even-handed overview of the structure, processes and critical issues for account management. It was exactly what I expected. I would not recommend this book for someone who is looking for an introduction to a sales organization or for tecniques on selling as that's not where the book is focused.
Very thorough.......2002-03-12
Working in KAM and writing my thesis on Benchmarking KAM/KAS, I find this book to be one of the two cornerstones for me. It is well-developed and unlike many of the other books on the market, it leaves you with the impression that the process is difficult, but possible with proper planning. I have read many other books on the subject, that tell amusing anecdotes, make it look simple, and give little structure for proceeding. They are actually long sales brochures for the consultants that wrote the books. Capon's book covers how to manage the process of selecting, approaching, and acquiring key accounts, and more importantly, how to align this process with the strategy of the firm. Very useful.

The Dodsons always knew where to go to solve their problems: the golf course. For decades, father and son took refuge there together; in the game, they found connection. Dodson fils's memoir of his last lyrical golf excursion with his father, taken through England and Scotland in the months before his father's death, is alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking. Final Rounds is as straight a shot into the heart of golf's magnetic hold on golfers--and the tie that binds fathers and sons--as a 300-yard drive that splits the fairway.
Book Description
James Dodson always felt closest to his father while they were on the links. So it seemed only appropriate when his father learned he had two months to live that they would set off on the golf journey of their dreams to play the most famous courses in the world.
Final Rounds takes us to the historic courses of Royal Lytham and Royal Birkdale, to the windswept undulations of Carnoustie, where Hogan played peerlessly in '53, and the legendary St. Andrews, whose hallowed course reveals something of the eternal secret of the game's mysterious allure over pros and hackers alike.
Throughout their poignant journey, the Dodsons humorously reminisce and reaffirm their love for each other, as the younger Dodson finds out what it means to have his father also be his best friend.
Final Rounds is a book never to be forgotten, a book about fathers and sons, long-held secrets, and the lessons a middle-aged man can still learn from his dad about life, love, and family.
Final Rounds is a tribute to a very special game and the fathers and sons who make it so. -->

Final Rounds.......2007-06-19
ISBN 0553375644 - I started reading this book hoping for the touching story of the father and son and was vaguely disappointed. Not to say the story isn't there, because it is in it's own way, but the golf far overshadows Dodson and his father, making this a far better book for golf fans than non-fans.
James Dodson and his father finally get around to planning that dream trip: all the best courses in great company. Just before they are to leave, his father calls with bad news - the trip will have to be postponed because the cancer of years ago is back. With a small laugh, the man Dodson calls "Opti the Mystic" tells him the prognosis: he has a month, maybe two, to live. Dodson realizes that this means that the trip may never happen, but another call comes soon after and the trip is on. There are conditions and one of them is that when his father says it's time to go home, it's time to go home, no argument. Opti has "things to do", clearly the tying up of loose ends in his life.
The men set out on the golf trip of a lifetime and, honestly, will bore the non-golf-fan cross-eyed with the details of games and players. If you've gotten that far, barrel through - the point of the book isn't the game, or the courses, it's the relationship between father and son. Golf is just the medium in which they relate to one another. Knowing, all along, that Opti is going to die doesn't detract from the sorrow when the time comes and, oddly, his death doesn't detract from the happier side of the story. Opti the Mystic, with an eye always for the silver lining, gives his son some incredible gifts and Dodson does his best to share them with the reader.
I'm not a fan of golf and found myself just skimming very big sections of the book. The stories OFF the course were far more interesting and I wish they'd been given more ink, but Final Rounds is still a very good book.
Final Rounds: A Father, A Son, The Journey Of A Lifetime........2007-03-08
Fanstic read. This will touch the heart of any golfer that has ever had the chance to play with their Dad.
Inspiration for a trip with my sons.......2006-01-26
I lost this book while I was vacationing with my wife in Italy for her 40th birthday. I couldn't wait to get home to buy another copy and finish it. That was 9 years ago. I was so moved by the story that I made a pledge to try and take my sons on a similar trip one day. Well, I've lost 3 jobs since then and have been paying college expenses for 6 years, the last 4 years for 2 kids at a time. However, my current job allowed me to go to Aberdeen, Scotland 6 times last year alone. While reading the book again, I dog earred places I wanted to include on my trip. I have also been saving magazine articles as well as itineraries from acquainteses who have made similar golf excursions. And during my trips to Scotland I've developed friendships and they have helped with insights to add my catalog of information.
Well, the trip is planned. I compiled a notebook for both my sons with our planned itinerary, a route map showing the courses along our journey and website information on all the courses. I gave it to them for Christmas. They are pumped. Both are very good players and we have played alot together. My oldest is getting married in October and my yougner son plays for his college team and will graduate in May. For their birthdays they each will get a copy of Final Round to read as a prerequiste to the trip schedlued June 6-21. We will play both the famous and the hidden gems. We'll play Carnoustie on Father's Day and then drive down to St. Andrew's and watch the final round of the US Open in a pub 100 yards off the 18th green of the Old Course. Our last round will be on the Old Course. This book provided a dream for a once in a lifetime trip. I'm going to share it with two of my favorite people.
A great story for father and sons regardless if they golf.......2005-05-16
I picked up this book at a used book sale on a lark. I love Scotland and thought a book on a father and son golf trip to the old courses would be fun. What I didn't expect was such a great book about the relationship between a very optimistic father and his earnest son. Just before the trip the father discovers he has cancer and not long to live. They go on the trip anyway and we get to know two interesting people and how life's lessons can come in many places including on a golf course. I lost my father a few months before I read this book. I took my time reading it, not wanting it to end. It helped ease the pain of my loss and to direct my energies and lessons I have to offer to my sons.
Fantastic and Moving .......2005-03-02
I am scottish and learnt the game of golf from my father when I was 8. My father and I played courses all over scotland as well as in the united states. The game taught me much about myself, but also much about my father. Though nothing like "Opti", my father had his own valauble pieces of advice that he passed to me. I moved to Japan at 22 and two years later found out my father had a year to live. I was stunned and returned immediately to be with him. In fact he only lived 2 months, but in that time he and I played two more games of golf, only a stones throw from the course mentioned in this book, Gullane.
Now only 4 years on I found this book and on every page it strikes a chord with me. I remember my father and thank him for teaching me this wonderful game. As a scot, I of course have an unrelenting love for the game and reading this book and seeing courses in there that we played together is truly moving.
Not often does a book compell me to write a review, this book however makes me feel like a simple review will never do justice to how much I enjoyed this book.

Book Description
In Final Rounds, James Dodson offers a touching, heartfelt, often humorous tribute to his father and the game they both loved as he tells the poignant story of his father's last days and how they set out to celebrate them with the golf tour of a lifetime.
To James Dodson, an editor of Golf magazine and a premier authority on the sport, his closest moments with his father were on the links. With his father approaching eighty, Dodson planned a dream golf trip through England and France, where the elder Dodson had first discovered his love for the game as an airman during World War II. But when he learned his father was suffering from an advanced form of cancer, the trip took on an added urgency. For Braxton Dodson had been given only a month or two to live.
Final Rounds takes us to Royal Lutham, where Bobby Jones captured his first Open championship in 1926; to the Royal Birkdale, where the same rains that swirled around Arnold Palmer in '61 fall upon the Dodsons; to Carnoustie, where Hogan played peerlessly in '53; and finally to the legendary St. Andrews, where the younger Dodson discovers something of the secret of the game's mysterious allure over pros and hackers alike.
But like golf itself, Final Rounds is about much more than just a game: it is about a journey of discovery between a father and a son, about long-held secrets shared, and about the valuable lessons a middle-aged man could still learn from his father on the importance of life, love, and family.
Customer Reviews:
I could not put the book down. James was me........1999-04-14
As James and his Dad take a final trip to Scotland, he and his wonderful Dad get to know each other and the love for each other, which had always been there becomes very personal. Golf is the game each loves and becomes the expression of their love for each other. They communicate and connect for long or short drives, it doesn't matter. The game of golf is there spoken and unspoken language. Opti, Jame's dad, has a few months to live, and his pain is numbed by playing and being near his son. They truely connect and James reads his dads words and remembers every detail of his life. The man is certainly teeing of with Bobby Jones, Julius Boros and Old Tom Morris. Waiting and watching are Love, Strange, Watson and a host of others who have shown the same respect for the game. Every golfer who was taught the game as a child by a parent (my Mother was my Opti) will relate and cry thru the last chapter, just as I did.
One of the most touching stories I've ever heard........1997-09-20
Truly an outstanding story wonderfully told. A love story about Dad's and son's that anyone with a heart will enjoy.
I listened to the tapes on a long trip. Upon returning home, the last tape was not complete so I sat in the car for 30 minuites to hear the end
Poignant and relevant to father-son relationships and golf.......1997-07-04
Even though I'd read the book, I recently bought the audio for a new long commute. James Dobson's reading of his own words is a poignant description of the journey he and his father make towards the end of their relationship. As with many aspects of life, golf and this journey reflect upon each other. The goals on the course mirror those in life; balance, harmony, relaxation while trying to achieve important goals. James Dobson narrates this journey, on and off the golf course, with compassion and humor. It has helped me in my thoughts about both golf and my father..

Book Description
North Korea seems impenetrable to outsiders, a bizarre, Stalinist sideshow and relic guerrilla state that defies explanation. For Washington, North Korea is a fully paid-up member of George Bush’s “axis of evil,” involved in a dangerous game of nuclear brinksmanship since last October. In this timely book, McCormack shows how decisive the founding myths and national identity forged through Korea’s armed resistance to a brutal Japanese colonialism are, and how hardened North Korea has become over half a century of Cold War. He shows that at the heart of the Korean crisis is the role of Japan where the North Korean admission of having abducted Japanese citizens has created something of a right-wing, nationalist backlash in a country that itself once abducted thousands of Koreans and almost sixty years later has yet to fully apologize for its acts. A foreign policy satellite of the United States, Japan is now showing signs of becoming more militarily independent, wanting to reassert its old role as a regional hegemon. Permeated by so many ills, North Korea —paranoid, insecure, and ravaged by famine—is in a vice with few cards in its pack. The nuclear one has been its joker for at least a decade.

Dissapointing.......2007-03-25
As I am doing research about this subject I found this one dissapointing. It's biased and often not well supported by facts or references. Still, I would recommend it to people interested in this subject, it at least gives an alternate view on many things.
Balanced reporting on North Korean peace efforts .......2005-06-26
Target North Korea gets the history right. That's unusual in a contemporary journalism marketed to a generation raised on Fox News fantasies of evil foreign men and evil foreign nations. The hard truth is that the Korean War was an attempt by the popular forces that defeated Japan to unite the country and expel the U.S installed regime. Kim Il Sung was the paramount leader of the Korean national movement and he won that prominence the hard way - in deadly combat with the better equipped Japanese army. The British regarded the U.S. installed leader of the south, Syngman Rhee, as "a dangerous fascist or a lunatic." See p.24 Rhee came to power in rigged elections that prevented Kim from being a candidate. And Rhee solidified his regime by murdering about 100,000 people he thought might be political opponents. Conditions were so bad in the south that 49% of the population felt that the savage Japanese occupation of Korea was actually better than the American occupation. (p.18) The brutality of the allies in the Korean War is fully documented in Mr. McCormacks balanced history of the north - south divide. U.S. threats to nuke the North have been unrelenting and continue to this day. Living in a constant state of danger and isolation has warped the economy and the society of the north. McCormak hopes that the DPRK can somehow break out of its U.S. imposed isolation and open to the wider world, as China has. Against significant odds, the North seems to be slowly bettering relations with the ROK and complicating U.S. plans to first-strike their defenses. Target North Korea also details the hostility of Japan to the North. Japan hypes the danger of the DPRK much as Bush and Blair hyped the danger of Iraq-to justify the need for a rapid arms expansion and to win military authority over North Asia. This is a much needed book that has become available at a fateful moment in DPRK - USA relations.
At last, some clarity on the North Korea issue.......2005-06-09
This is a fantastic book. I know a fair bit about Korea, but it wasn't until reading this book that I came to some understanding of North Korea's behaviour, particularly over the past 5-10 years. It seems that when it comes to North Korea, the media simply trumpet what governments say, and push the line that North Korea is irrational and cannot be understood. McCormack shows otherwise. The book is also concise and easy to read.
A Well Balanced Book on an Emotional Subject.......2005-03-23
Writing even a political science book about North Korea without emotion or strong bias is a remarkably difficult task. On the surface the Pyongyang represents what most non-Koreans would instinctively loath. At the same time, there are those foreign writers who have been too uncritical and too willing to give the benefit of the doubt in trying to understand the North's (and South's) logic.
Dr McCormack has somehow been able to steer a remarkable intellectually honest path noting along the way the mistakes and sins of all parties to this ongoing conflict. No one country comes out looking like a champ. Perhaps that is the advantage of writing from an Australian perspective. Regardless, this book is remarkably even-handed and dispassionate without being overly dry.
The book is immensely readable and concise. As a long term resident of Korea and a recognized amateur political analyst, I would recommend this book as an excellent starting point for anyone interested in this subject. I would also suggest this book to any "old Korea hand" who could use an update on this subject as well as a single volume reference dealing with US-Korean relations since 1945.
Convincing and insightful.......2004-07-06
I read this book after Aquariums of Pyongyang to get a better understanding of North Korea's position in world politics. I consider I was very fortunate in choosing this book.
This author challenges typical views of North Korea as simply an evil empire through a very convincing analysis of the political circumstances leading up to the current situation but at the same time he does not defend the regime.
Whereas I suspect other books focus on criticising the DPRK, McCormack is heavily critical of US policy and diplomacy for its role in the current deadlock and the escalating nuclear threat. His insights have greatly helped me to understand current developments and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond Washington's over-simplified representation of the state of affairs.
