Customer Reviews:
useful and informative.......2007-04-20
I bought this book as soon as it came out over three years ago, and I still refer to it this day for some sound, quality advice. It's a great resource for ambitious young people eager to learn some simple yet often thoughtful advice. I would recommend this book to parents, children, and young adults everywhere.
Thank you, Mr. Gallagher, for this comprehensive and diverse compilation.
Should Be Renamed, "... of America's Successful Male Politicians ...".......2007-01-05
If you are a young person looking for any female role models, look elsewhere. I was disappointed not only with this gender oversight, but also that the author focuses on men in office (plus a few entertainers, athletes, and coaches). Where are the artists, physicians, and Nobel Laureates? America certainly has its share, but these successful people are not represented here.
Great common themes of personal success.......2003-09-04
This collection of advise from world leaders in government, business and entertainment shows how common sense values are the key to success. There is a consistent theme of hard work, high moral character, and overcoming failure throughout the book.
Anyone of any age should read this book and they will find common sense advise that will trump all the self-help de jour literature on the market. So forget about Six Sigma, Steven Covey, and all the other "corporate consultant" lingo, and discover the very basic common themes of successful leaders in society.

Stadium Stories: Iowa Hawkeyes (Stadium Stories Series)

Book Description
A "high porch picnic" is a Texas expression for "an exceptionally good time." During Hayden Fry's glorious career as one of college football's most unique coaches, that's a good way to describe his life. Ranked 10th on the all-time collegiate list for Division I victories, Fry successfully combined his football coaching savvy with a down-home charm to make him one of the game's most colorful personalities. Hayden Fry tells of his childhood days in Odessa, Texas, his introduction of African-American athletes to the Southwest Conference, his relationships with various celebrities such as George Bush and Roy Orbison, and his rise to fame as the State of Iowa's most recognizable citizen.

When Iowa football became powerful again.......2003-05-17
As a long-time fan of the Iowa Hawkeye football time, I watched them get repeatedly shelled during the late sixties and the seventies. Teams used to defeat them by thirty or more points and rarely have to throw a pass. In 1979, the savior arrived in the form of coach Hayden Fry, but at first it did not seem that that was the case. His statements like, "Scratch where it itches", at times sounded so homey that many people wondered if he was just another over-hyped coach who would add to the string of failures.
However, that all changed in the first half of the first game the Hawkeyes played under Fry. They stormed ahead of Indiana 26-3 in the first half, although they ultimately lost 30-26. From that point, everyone was a believer and his teams went on to give us some of the most exciting moments in our lives. This is Hayden's recollection of his life, although most of the ink is used to describe his years at Iowa, and there is very little of a personal nature that does not directly involve football. Reading it brought back so many fond memories of listening and watching, that I found myself reliving some of those times. If you are a Hawk fan, then this is a book that you must read.
Remarkable "Program Turn-a-Round" career of Hayden Fry........1999-07-01
Easy reading book on the very successful career of legendary (ranks as 10th all-time winningest coach in NCAA history) college football coach Hayden Fry, known nationally as the long-time and much loved coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes ("Americas Team"). The book chronicle's his [unprecedented] success in "turning-a-round" hapless football programs at SMU, North Texas and Iowa. Highlights include his 17 bowl games (including 3 trips to the Rose Bowl), spending a lot of time with the Iowa Hawkeyes where he coached for twenty years, including 3 Big Ten Championships, but also recalls his days at SMU where he was the man responsible for integrating football in Texas (SouthWest Conference)- arguably his greatest achievement in his football career. His days as a high school and college standout player are also explored - a true "aficionado" for the game of football! Hawkeye fans and football fans alike will enjoy this "yarn" from one of the most colorful characters in college football in a generation!
Legendary, colorful coach looks back on career.......1999-04-14
Hayden Fry is a revered figure in the state of Iowa, and rightly so. He arrived in Iowa City in 1979 and quickly resusitated one of the worst football programs in the country. Under Fry's direction, the Hawkeyes went to the Rose Bowl three times in a nine-year span. Fry also integrated the Southwest Conference at Southern Methodist, and in this well-written autobiography, he brings his long, career successful career to life and recalls many colorful anecdotes. This is an entertaining and illuminating book from one of the most significant coaches of his generation.
EXCELLENT-IF YOU 'RE NOT A HAYDEN FRY FAN YOU WILL BE!.......1999-03-31
THROUGH HIS STORIES AND MEMOIRS HAYDEN FRY SHOWS EVERYBODY ONCE AGAIN THAT HE IS A "CLASS ACT".HE MAKES ME PROUD TO BE A HAWKEYE!! THANK YOU HAYDEN!

Three Days with Bobby Fischer and Other Chess Essays: How to Meet Champions & Choose Your Openings is a chess book you can sit back comfortably in your armchair and just read. Or, when you feel like getting the pieces out of the box and learning from some great games, tactics and strategiesthat's all here as well.
Nearly everyone with an interest in chess shares the same two questions:
- What were the great champions like?
- How can I choose opening moves that give me a good game?
Chess Hall-of-Famer and three-time US Champion Lev Alburt teams up with World Chess Hall of Fame Executive Director and Chess Journalist of the Year Award winner Al Lawrence to answer these questions and tell the intriguing, inspiring and sometimes downright bizarre behind-the-scenes stories of the chess greats and near-greats, and how, above all else, they were men of their times.
- Steinitz, who codified the rules of good playbefore going berserk
- Lasker, the chessboard Freudian who wielded psychological weapons
- Capablanca, dashingly handsome and to whom everything came easy
- Alekhine, a dsiplaced person who gave up drink to win
- Under-rated Euwe, the last amateur to become world champion
- Botvinnik, who refrained from sex to preserve his phosphorus
- Smyslov, an amateur opera singer who brought chess and artist' touch
- Tal, whose gaze and red-hot sacrifices wilted even the toughest wills
- Petrosian, who through chess became a paradoxa Soviet bourgeois
- Spassky, irreverent attacker who bowed to enigmatic Bobby Fischer
- Karpov, the positional boa constrictor of the board
- Kasparov, the char8smatic boxer-chess-player who's still at the top.
And many more great players of the past and present who never made it to the very top, but nevertheless left their indelible mark on the game.
Customer Reviews:
Why are Alburt's books so hard to follow?.......2004-05-17
I read three of his, including this one. The Pirc, for the benefit of the doubt, is so advanced that I could not understand. The Rules of Thumb, so general that I could find from other books. This book, only the first thin section is about Fischer, the rest is like a condensed version of chess magazines. It takes only 10 minutes to read all about Fischer in this book. I recommend the Gufeld's book about Fischer, deeper, more stories and games of Fischer's.

Book Description
One third of all homes sold today are condos, co-ops, or townhouses. America's #1 real estate expert shows what to watch for when buying one of them. Home ownership is still the American dream, but not everyone follows tradition by buying a detached one-family house. Condos, co-ops, and townhouses are increasingly popular alternatives nationwide. These "shared ownership" options have unique pluses and minuses, as Bob Irwin reveals in Tips & Traps When Buying a Condo, Co-op, or Townhouse.
Like other books in his best-selling "Tips & Traps" series, it's packed with targeted, reader-friendly advice. If you're a prospective buyer, Bob Irwin will show you how to:
- Decide if shared ownership is right for you
- Read between the lines of bylaws
- Deal with homeowners associations
- Check out the seven warning signs of big trouble
- Handle disclosures and inspections
- And much more

Learn everything you need to purchase a condo, co-op, or townhouse -- from understanding bylaws to dealing with disclosures and inspections to negotiating a deal.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource!.......2007-05-28
As someone just getting in the market, I really had no idea what differentiated condos from single-family homes other than the way they looked. This book really helped me think about the pros and cons of both types of homes. I found myself drawn to condos because you don't have to worry about any exterior elements, like yards, community areas, etc. All of that is taken care of for you. But, that comes with a cost. This book shows you how to decide if that cost is worth it, what to ask about so that you don't end up in a building with a bunch of lawsuits pending (that you might end up paying for) and how to know if your building is prepared for disasters, new roofs and other such events. It was really eye-opening!
Excellent source of information for the new home buyer!.......2005-10-14
Tip & Traps when Buying a Condo, Co-op, or Townhouse, was an excellent source of information. It is a "must have" for any new home buyer looking for property. I found it to be very helpful while searching for my home.
Read this book before you leap into a shared ownership.......2004-06-11
This book showed me the "red flags" to look for when evaluating a shared ownership developement and helped me to avoid buying into a nightmare. Ohhh, I'm so glad I read this book.
I read 4 other books on buying a condo and this book was by far the most practical and answered my questions. The format is easy to read and quickly search.
The tips and traps opens your eyes to what you're getting yourself into. Learn from the experiences of others and make the right choice for your lifestyle. Don't buy into a dysfunctional developement. It can be a legal, financial and emotional nightmare.
Thanks to Robert Irwin's advice, I passed on several developements and kept searching until I found the right condo developement for me. It has been a great choice. The book was a helpful resource during the buying process. Highly recommend.
not for city buyers.......2004-03-28
The title may talk about "condo, co-op, or townhouse" but it is clear the author has nothing in mind but those awful suburban townhouse or condo developments. There are numerous references to density being bad and to things like counting the number of parking places. Not of use to someone who is interested in purchasing actual city housing.
A good primer........2002-01-17
As a prospective first-time property purchaser, I found this book to contain some good information on the particulars of condos and townhouses. I did not read the section on Co-ops however. Parts of the book seemed to contain redundant information, not necessarily for emphasis. Perhaps the chapters were intended to be somewhat self-contained. "Buying a home for Dummies" has been my first resource. I'd recommend reading something like it first in order to fully appreciate the differences w/condos and townhouses described in this book.

Book Description
A seaman as heroic as Nelson, a master of gunnery and genius at deception, a tactician so formidably skillful Napoleon called him "the sea wolf," Thomas Cochrane was an adventurer, admiral, and inventor of new devices of warfare far beyond his time. He made of his life at sea a legend more extraordinary than any of the works of fiction it inspired - like the famous sea tales of C.S. Forrester and Patrick O'Brian's bestselling series of naval novels featuring the redoubtable Jack Aubrey. Barely twenty-five when he assumed command of the Speedy, Cochrane created mayhem in the Mediterranean as he took the tiny brig with its fourteen guns to naval glory and himself to national fame and a fortune in prize money. A maverick, Cochrane often stood at odds with the Admiralty and on occasion operated against its orders. As innovative as he was fearless, he flew under false colors to deceive the enemy, instituted in-shore guerrilla raiding, promoted the use of explosion ships, and experimented with poison gas, propeller-drive ships, and compressed-air engines. Outnumbered and outgunned, he nonetheless triumphed over Spanish and Portuguese naval forces in battles off the coasts of Chile, Peru, and Brazil, where he served as a mercenary in the cause of independence. Born into a penurious but noble Scottish family, Cochrane rose fabulously and fearlessly from midshipman to admiral, from penniless heir to a radical member of parliament to Tenth Earl of Dundonald. He married a penniless orphan and had a long-standing liaison with one of the most famous literary figures of his day. He survived the Stock Exchange scandal that sent him to prison and escaped to South America, where he helped shape the destiny of a continent. Rebellious, dashing, mad, heroic; Cochrane embodies the spirit of the Romantic Age.
Customer Reviews:
Cochrane v. Aubrey, worth the read?.......2007-09-16
I have read half of the Aubrey series and though it might be worthwhile to read about the real man...yes, that of Lord Thomas Cochrane, before finishing the rest of the series. Was it worth it, yes!!! Could it have been better written...probably, as a lot of questions went unanswered.
So what did I do...I ordered one of the books Robert Harvey recommended..."Cochrane" by Donald Thomas and continued reading the series by Patrick O'Bryan. I was not disappointed in Harvey's book, in fact, I found a lot of information which I felt was left out of the series. What might that be...try reading about the real life hero of Scotland and how the Admiralty tried/attempted to shut him down. This guy was for real. Damn if we don't have the same thing happening today.
Any history is worthwhile...it is what we do with it that makes it important. And give me a break...you can afford the $14 to be better informed....
Page turner.......2007-06-19
As noted, fact is stranger than fiction, and it couldn't be truer than with the life of Thomas Cochrane. If you enjoy the likes of Horatio Hornblower or Jack Aubrey, you won't be able to put this one down. You'll immediately recognize their "fictional" exploits as you read the real stories upon which they're based. A great summer read!
Walk the Plank. The sharks aren't in the water, they're onboard!.......2006-05-14
If you love adventure, history, and a dashing and a daring true-life hero; then this is your cup of tea. However, if your closer to my taste then it would be a martini, dry, shaken not stirred. Anyone with military background will sadly identify with the upper echelon's stupidity/hypocrisy. Dare I say our hero undergoes a transformation, who at the climax of the book is on his way to rescue Napolean himself! Truth is stranger than fiction. And I might add: edge of your seat true suspence. Because in the end you can't escape the truth. The FIGHTING CAPTAIN welcomes you aboard mate!
Glad I only paid $5 for it............2006-03-27
Basically a recital of accomplishments and events, with next to no detail about most of them. The only thing he really goes into depth about was his trial before the King's Bench. Also, it appears to be writtin almost on a 6th grade level. Not impressed at all.
An interesting, but biased history.......2003-10-28
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about cutter and brig anti-privateering and sea-land battle tactics. Cochrane was a true master at both of these things, and this book did provide some useful insights.
The author seems on a mission to put Cochrane on a pedestal. He spends too much time sniping at Cochrane's enemies, and whitewashing his misconduct. This makes an otherwise interesting story difficult to read at times.
A much more indepth treatment of how Cochrane achieved his many victories without the political commentary would have been more interesting to me.

Book Description
Al-Qaeda still threatens the West despite the fact that thousands of its fighters have been killed or captured. Attacks continue, even as Usama bin Laden and his top lieutenants hide in distant caves. The terror network's resiliency lies in the existence of "affiliate groups." Numbering more than two-dozen worldwide, these groups maintain operatives from al-Qaeda's training camps and battlefields. They are local and autonomous, but fight in the name of al-Qaeda's global jihad.
Using never-before published material, Arabic language sources, and personal interviews from the Middle East, Schanzer examines affiliates in Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, Yemen and Iraq. The author also shares research from a fact-finding mission in Iraq, where he interviewed al-Qaeda fighters and one of Saddam Hussein's former intelligence officers.
Fighting affiliate groups will likely be the next challenge in the war on terror. Schanzer provides a field guide to al-Qaeda's Middle East armies and explores what it will take to successfully combat them.
Customer Reviews:
same ol' AIPAC, MEMRI, WINEP propaganda..........2007-08-02
Bringing back "cut and run" - bad choice of mantras for Schanzer. Oh brother...watched this guy on C-Span brainwashing some impressionable youngsters at the Student's Conference of the "Young America Foundation". He claims there was a cut and run pattern in Lebanon, Iran, Somalia, etc, and his point is that we shouldn't cut and run in Iraq. He doesn't address whether we shouldn't have been in any of those conflicts to begin with - nobody like him even leaves that as an option - he builds into his argument that conflict is assumed. He dismisses the possibility that the reason for "cutting and running" was that the US government got into conflicts the US people never wanted. If you "buy" this book, please just forget we first quartered troops in their neighborhoods, not the other way around...then they finally attacked us on our soil after tens, hundreds of thousands of THEIR deaths prior. Just another chickenhawk neocon AIPAC crony pulling us into something we never asked for, and don't want.
Surveys the most notorious affiliates of Al-Qaeda in the Middle East.......2006-01-18
Al-Qaeda's Armies, in which this reviewer is thanked in the acknowledgments, surveys the most notorious affiliates of Al-Qaeda in the Middle East by which Schanzer means "homegrown, organic Islamist terror groups with nationalist objectives" that have been trained by Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Additionally, affiliates "communicate with Al-Qaeda's command structure ... share Al-Qaeda's ascetic and militant approach to the implementation of Islamic law, and their shared goal of world Islamic dominance."
Following September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda metastasized from a hierarchal and centralized organization into a decentralized movement; Schanzer explains how it adjusted to this new reality by relying to a large degree on the infrastructure of surviving affiliate groups. These affiliates, Schanzer argues, represent the next generation of the global terrorist threat or stated differently, Al-Qaeda 2.0. Schanzer predicts that "affiliates will increasingly constitute Al-Qaeda's outer perimeter and the pools from which new terrorists can be drawn."
He provides exceptional perspective on affiliates in Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Algeria, and northern Iraq. Additionally, the book includes information on their evolution, their activities, and offers a convincing strategy for the United States and its allies to deal with this menace. Often overlooked because of their small size and because they operate in areas outside the reach of state authority, the affiliates' activities should sound alarm bells in Western capitals. To defeat Al-Qaeda requires a two-pronged approach: hunting the central leadership and the affiliates.
Undertaking a strategy of combating affiliates would certainly yield much needed victories against Al-Qaeda. With troops in two theatres of war-Afghanistan and Iraq-the United States ought to consider small-scale operations against affiliates, which "may prove a less complicated, less time consuming, and less expensive mode of fighting terrorism," Schanzer argues. By their nature, these operations would require the support of Muslim governments. Convincing these-an unlikely prospect under the best of circumstances-would demonstrate to Al-Qaeda and other jihadis that the West and the Muslim world alike consider them pariahs. Schanzer also posits that this would begin the real battle: the battle between moderate Islam and radicals.

Foundation for the Defense of Democracies
Book Description
The first book to look at wilderness in the northeastern US, Wilderness Comes Home features a new approach based on ecological reserve design to protect biological diversity, rewilding and restoring lands to wilderness, and embedding wilderness in a landscape of sustainably managed farmland and forestland. It addresses major theoretical and practical aspects of this important issue -- whether, why, and how to reestablish wilderness areas in the Northeast. Although Western wilderness models already exist for undeveloped areas, Eastern models are still evolving. Protection and social management are being urged not for the "forest primeval" but for recovering areas, in which returning species such as moose and peregrine falcons roam over new growth softwoods and hardwoods, interspersed with the stone walls that once marked field boundaries.
