5 out of 5 stars Great insider view of the Trump organization.......2005-06-02

I've always wondered how Donald Trump could go bankrupt running a casino, this book is a fascinating read on how it happened. Jack O'Donnell was a high ranking executive in Trump's casino operations, and for a time actually ran his only consistently profitable casino, Trump Plaza (at least it was consistently profitable until Jack O'Donnell quit). Jack details in fascinating detail Donald Trump's erratic behavior, lack of knowledge of the casino business, and all the "fuzzy math" surrounding the junk bonds that financed Trump's acquistions. This book shows very clearly what goes on behind the hype surrounding the myth of Donald Trump, it is very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Account of Trump and the A. C. Casino Industry.......2005-02-24

This book recounts firsthand through the eyes of Jack O'Donnell, a man who for a time ran the Trump Plaza and intimately dealt with all of the Donald's casino holdings in AC, Trump's rise and fall in the Atlantic City gaming industry. I came at the book from two ends, for one I am facinated by the casino industry and high dollar business in general, and two when you mix in a volatile personality like Trump's the end result is a fast read that was throughly satisfying. O'Donnell's prose reads like a novel as he recounts Trump's slick business dealings and initial success. Things start to sour as the Donald makes a string of strategic errors and allows his ego to cloud his perception of reality leaving his business holdings on the brink of financial ruin. Anyone interested in Trump should make this a first purchase as the Donald is disected in an unflinchingly intimate light by a man who spoke with him almost daily for three years. Others interested in high finance and the casino industry will also enjoy this book.

Good book. Gives you insight into how Donald Trump thinks and makes decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informitive read.......1999-03-15

This was a well written book by someone with inside knowledge of the Trump organization. The reader learns a lot about Trump's personal life and the inner workings of the casino industry. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Donald gets Trumped!.......1998-08-24

If you're in business or thinking of owning a business (big or small) consider Trumped! This book is a good learning tool for keeping your ego in check and dollars in the bank. Trumped! takes the reader on an endless roller coaster ride into The Donald's doings, and how his huge ego and whacked business deals finally led him to his undoing. The book reveals that a large part of Trump's downfall was the death of his three lead guys, but it's ultimately The Donald's own irresponsibility that was driving the train wreck to financial failure. Trumped! is an excellent venture into the mind of an irrational, ego-driven tyrant. As far as a business book is concerned, I think it serves as a reminder to all those present or future business owners to keep a sharp eye on the books, and a big heart open for all the people who make their business a success. At times Trumped! reads like a soap opera. But the book seems to maintain an even balance between the surreal world of Donald's many romances and the cold hard numbers that make or break financial success. END

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Player in History.......2007-05-26

Terrific insight to Bobby Jones - while O.B. Keeler must have "dressed" up the final product, the sense that so much came directly from a young man barely out of his teens coming to grips with the realization that he was the most famous golfer in the world... Just compelling reading!

    5 out of 5 stars Inside The Champion's Mind.......2002-06-29

Great read, one all golfers will want to make, as Nicklaus suggests in the modern edition foreward.

Why return to an outdated time of wood shafts and limitef flight balls? One finds it in this read, the character and strength of this great amateur.

What impressed this reviewer was Jones' humbleness, and love for the game. He wasn't really into all the winning, which in fact caused him anxiety. Moreover he was into the challenge against Ole Man Par and himself. He relished the comradre with his fellow competitors and is most quick to give them praise rather than discuss what he didn't have in his game that round.

Neat to realize that his prized trophy was the first, which he thought was improperly awarded to him, while Alexa Sterling should have won it, no question. This is what golf is about, not slugging it 300+ yds. to screaming fans playing for millions.

Takes us back to what the game is and should remain. It's become far too commercialized.

Will take a honored position in my growing golf book collection to be fondly recalled and reread.

    5 out of 5 stars Tradition.......2002-04-12

Bobby Jones shares his perspective on winning, losing, and his life-long battle against "Old Man Par". This is a must read for any serious student of golf history and tradition.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Champion and Charming Companion.......2001-08-29

If you not only enjoy playing golf but also cherish the game's traditions and values, and if you could purchase only one book about golf, this is it. Whether or not Jones is the greatest golfer ever is a judgment I eagerly entrust to those foolish enough to debate it. Suffice to say that he was among the greatest players and among the finest gentlemen ever associated with golf. Published in 1927 when Jones was just 25, three years before he won what has since been designated "The Grand Slam", this is a book in which Jones (in collaboration with Keeler) invites his reader to accompany him "down the fairway" of a life as well as a game. The first eleven chapters review the competitive process until what he characterizes as his "Biggest Year." In the final chapter of Part One, Jones observes that, "I started the year 1926 with one glorious licking and closed it with another. And it was the biggest golf-year I'll ever have." Or so he then thought. In that year, we're told, "Walter Hagen gave me the first drubbing, and of all the workmanlike washings-up I have experienced, this was far and away the most complete" and later, "George [von Elm] was too much for me....He simply outplayed me. It was coming to him....It was George's turn. So the biggest Year ended, as it began, with a beating. Still, I'll always feel kindly toward 1926."

In Part Two, Jones shares just about everything he has learned (to that point) about the mental as well as physical skills needed to play golf well. What struck me, throughout the book, is Jones's candor. For example, "There are times when I feel I know less about what I am doing than anybody else in the world." He discusses putting ("a game within a game"), the pitch shot ("a mystery"), iron play ("I like it"), "the heavy artillery" (woods), miscellaneous shots ("and trouble"), and in the final chapter "Tournament Golf." The reader is provided with a generous selection of photographs, many of which I (at least) had not seen previously. "Early in this little book I made the statement that there were two kinds of golf -- golf, and tournament golf; and that they were not at all the same." When concluding this book, Jones acknowledges that he's been "awfully lucky. Maybe I'll win another championship, some day. I love championship competition, after all -- win or lose." What will it feel like when he days of tournament competition have ended? "It's going to be queer." Then he confides, as his "little book" ends: "But there's always one thing to look forward to -- the round with Dad and [other kindred spirits]; the Sunday morning round at old East Lake, with nothing to worry about, when championships are done." Three years after sharing these thoughts and feelings, Jones won the Grand Slam and then retired from tournament competition. Some people have expressed their preferences for those with whom they would like to share a "fantasy dinner." Were it possible, I would like to share a "fantasy round of golf" with Bob Jones, Walter Hagen, and Harvey Penick. Given the impossibility of that, I must seek their companionship in books such as this.

5 out of 5 stars A must read in golf, golf history.......1997-10-06

Down the Fairway is a must read in the subject of golf and golf history written by a very wise but young Bobby Jones. As one of the greatest golfers of all time Jones ' words carry a lot of weight. But it is not just his instruction included in the book; his love of the game and his genuine feelings for it are a welcome respite from today's money golf. Included in the work are stirring chapters recounting some of Jones' greatest victories and the benefits he discovered in golf. There are many photgraphs in the book including some this reader had not seen before that are quite advanced for the time period. This book should be sought by all who are interested in golf. It is a good read and a gives a great feeling about the game of golf.

Today's worker shortage is painful enough, but compounded by other employment realities--resignations on short notice, sudden disappearances by new hires, through-the-roof recruitment costs, associated customer and staff disruptions--it's enough to make anyone handling personnel feel as if they're in a war. That's exactly the premise advanced by employee-retention specialist Leigh Branham, whose Keeping the People Who Keep You in Business offers a very workable plan for victory in a workforce battle with no immediate end in sight. It details 24 Retention Practices that Branham developed and organized around the principles of attracting ("be a company that people want to work for"), selecting ("select the right people in the first place"), integrating ("get them off to a great start") and coaching ("coach and reward to sustain commitment"). Each, from "Adopt a 'Give-and-Get-Back' Philosophy" to "Have More Fun," recommends specific programs to help achieve its stated goal, and offers real-life examples of these activities in action at both megacorporations like Charles Schwab and Mirage Resorts and smaller firms including a Charlotte, North Carolina, print shop and a San Francisco architectural firm. "Reducing turnover takes commitment," as Branham says, and this book includes a useful collection of techniques and tools that actually could make it happen. --Howard Rothman

                  Book Description

A war rages in today's workplace, pitting company against company in the fight to find and keep good employees. The losses are high, and battle- weary managers are desperate for talented reinforcements. They've learned that bonuses, stock options, and other financial rewards aren't enough. To win this "war for talent," they need more.

Help has arrived in the form of KEEPING THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP YOU IN BUSINESS. This compelling new book gives readers a battle-plan for victory, offering 24 strategies for retaining valuable people. The strategies are grouped in four basic "keys":

                  1) Be a company people want to work for 2) Select the right person in the first place 3) Manage the joining-up process 4) Coach to maintain commitment.

These practices will help readers: Make their organization an "employer of choice" * Clearly define the talent needed * Make new employees feel welcomed, valued, prepared, and challenged * Facilitate employees' career growth and advancement, and more.

KEEPING THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP YOU IN BUSINESS is also loaded with specific examples, how-to guidelines, models, and planning aids--proven tools from an expert who knows that money alone won't keep the employees you can't afford to lose.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Readable, Valuable.......2006-02-16

Keeping the best employees is a goal that is not often met in today's changing and fluid new economy. Leigh Branham introduces four key strategies designed to help an organization keep the employees it wants. These solid practices are designed to have a positive impact on an organization's best workers by increasing motivation, performance and satisfaction. These four key points are organized in parallel with an employee's life cycle in an organization:

Key #1: Be a company people want to work for.
The leadership of the organization must create an environment where three essential elements are put into place: adopt a "give and get back" philosophy, measure what counts and pay for it, inspire commitment to a clear vision and definite objectives.
Key #2: Select the right person in the first place.
Poor recruiting decisions today result in the poor performers of tomorrow. An organization must claim responsibility for recruiting to ensure it not only chooses the right candidate, but also stays connected to the external business community, and thereby having access to the full diversity of the talent pool.
Key #3: Get them off to a great start.
Knowing that between 50 and 60 percent of employees change jobs within the first seven months, it is seasoned experienced manager and leaders that focus on this critical period to the organization keeps its best employees. The keys elements during this period: communicate how their work is vital to success, get commitment to a performance agreement, and give autonomy and reward initiative.
Key #4: Coach and Reward to maintain commitment.
To sustain an employee's commitment to the organization, his relationship with his manager is a critical element. It is said that 50 percent of satisfaction at work is determined by an employee's relationship with his or her manager. Managers should: proactively manage the performance agreement, recognize results, and give employees tools to take charge of his or her career.

                  5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2005-10-23

I read the book as part of an MBA mid-term project and would recommend this to any line manager or human resource practitioner who wants real, proven ideas and thoughts about attracting, retaining and developing quality employees. The book is very well structured and easy to read, yet a no-nonsense approach and in depth look at retaining valuable people.

If at all possible, this book should be read in combination with Branham's subsequently published book, The 7 Hidden Reasons Employees Leave: How to Recognize the Subtle Signs and Act Before It's Too Late, and preferably read first. That is desirable but not imperative. Either book can firmly stand on its own merits and both are "must reading" as competition for talent becomes increasingly more aggressive. That said, the subtitle of this earlier book correctly indicates what it provides: "24 ways to hang on to your most valuable talent." Branham carefully organizes his material within eleven chapters and focuses on four "Keys," providing with each several "retention practices." Too many business books are bloated with theory but wholly impoverished in terms of practicality. For that reason, I commend Branham on the fact that he devotes most of his attention to explaining HOW to establish and then increase the appeal of an organization that people want to work for, how to hire the right people in the first place, how to get new hires off to a great start, and how to use effective coaching and appropriate rewards to sustain their commitment. Well done!

                  5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2003-05-09

Finally an employee retention resource from an outstanding consultant that combines practical step by step instructions with theory AND excellent examples from top companies. Keeping outstanding employees should be a top priority for every business, but unfortunately retention often runs a distant second to recruitment. Leigh Branham takes the mystery out of keeping top employees by providing business owners, managers and consultants proven retention tips. After introducing each retention practice, Leigh provides a questionnaire to evaluate your company's effectiveness. Plus the appendix is filled with surveys, checklists and evaluations you can start using today! As a consultant and coach, I am using Leigh's material with companies and individual clients and getting excellent feedback.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid Brain Drain.......2002-09-22

Leigh has written a book that should be on the desk of every business person who wants to create a work environment where people do their best because they are valued as the best.

Although change is part of life, a business always wants to keep the talent that makes for success. This book serves as a clear, concise outline as to how to make this happen. It shares down to earth advice that works in the real work world.

What a great addition this would be to the required reading list for MBA students. Many of the problems that are faced daily in today's business world could be prevented if Leigh's findings were put into practice! I highly recommend this book to both small and large business managers.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Biography by Gen. Scott!.......1998-07-11

I have a autographed copy of this book and it's one of my most treasured books. It is a wonderful follow up to "God is My Co-Pilot". I have read it at least 10 times in the year that I have had it. It is a very compelling book... I just don't know how to desribe it. Every library that I know of has it, as well as God is My Co-Pilot. It's really not all that hard to find. If you are even the slightest remoteness interested in what it was like in China between 1942 and 1945 this is a exellent book. I don't know how to put it into words... I just love his books. I'm sorry to say that I've never been able to read any of the others (Flying Tiger: Chennault of China, Boring a Hole through the Sky, God is Still My Co-Pilot, just to name a few). He's now over 90 I know that he flew a F-15 Eagle at age 89. Your really not supposed to.. but somehow he convinced them he could. Most everyone I've told says that there must be another seat for the navigator that somebody else went sat in. But, I garrenty you that there is only ONE seat in a F-15 Eagle. In short he is a incredible man, and has a incredible life. And I quote:

"Claire Lee Chennault was a indivialist, and some of that indiviualty must have rubbed off on me because I to have been a indiviaulast.. a mavrick general, in my carrer. But first I had to meet him, and that took some doing. I had to lie cheat and surely steal. There is a saying "never steal anything small" well what I stole was a B-17E FLying Fortress. Right or wrong, under the surrcumstances I did it. It is a long story and I have to Start at the beginning."

5 out of 5 stars this is his best book of all!.......1998-05-14

This book is the Generals best by far because it chronicles pretty much everything about the man himself. His story is proof of what happens if you persist. If you want to get the whole snapshot of my hero, Gen Bob Scott- then this is the book you need to read!! Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars The life story of an American hero!.......1998-03-13

Robert Lee Scott is one of the heros of our century who faded from our collective memory long ago. His 1943 best-seller, God is my Co-pilot, made him famous during WWII, and The Day I Owned the Sky brings the reader up-to-date (Well, up to 1988, anyway) on the further adventures of this magnificent Flying Tiger. This book will take the reader from his humble beginnings in Georgia, to his wartime exploits, and into his fun-filled retirement. If you love books like Yeager and Press On! you'll love this one, too!

5 out of 5 stars Great book. I know where some are........1998-01-10

This is another great book by Gen. Scott. I feel that I am right in the cockpit with him. The last time I looked, there was a limited number of autographed editions available in the Air Force Museum gift shop at Robins AFB. Ga. Contact the gift shop for availability.

                            Book Description

DonÂ't ask author Gary Mielo what it was like to grow up in North Bergen, New Jersey. HeÂ's likely to relate personal essays and anecdotes that include “the most heinous experience, the one which can easily produce the deepest and most lasting of scars, is an affliction known as the senior prom”. HeÂ'll evoke “a time when yellow air raid shelter signs, hanging on the walls of virtually all candy stores, ice cream parlors, and other public buildings, reported the way to alleged underground safety”. And narrate the demise of his 1955 DeSoto “while traversing one of the worldÂ's most heavily trafficked truck routes, the infamous Tonnelle Avenue”.

Comprised of 44 personal essays, 74 th Street Stories extols New JerseyÂ's Hudson County as it and its North Bergen residents lived through two of the most bizarre decades in recent history, namely the Cold War 1950s and the Strung Out 1960s. Nevertheless, the moments of sudden awareness recounted in many of these essays go beyond the merely wistful or the distinctively reminiscent. The characters and incidents described in 74 th Street Stories have their roots in a town and a county that nurtured an identity that was nothing less than wonderfully peculiar.

Heather Mac Donald does the legwork that confirms much of what one might suspect if one has had much contact with public schools, university schools of education, politicized museums, deconstructionist or multiculturalist theory, departments of human resources, the homeless, or paranoiacs who think the New York Police Department under Mr. Giuliani was a "fascist" organization bent on persecuting minorities.

I'm assuming, of course, that one has gradually come to suspect that leftist and left-liberal intellectuals have successfully sold us on a good deal of rot that retards educational achievement, keeps the cycle of poverty spinning, makes a mockery of a liberal arts education, sends tax dollars spurting from the coffers, releases the insane into the streets to sleep in boxes and harass pedestrians, encourages social workers to keep infants under the "protection" of their drug-using biological so-called parents, and vilifies the men and women who risk their lives to make minority neighborhoods safer. If one has *not* yet suspected this, it is all the more urgent that one read Heather Mac Donald's book.

Especially recommended are Mac Donald's pieces on homelessness, the Diallo shooting and its aftermath, and the unhappy evolution of the "Hundred Neediest Cases" feature in "The New York Times." The piece not to miss, though, is the one on teacher education, "Why Johnny's Teacher Can't Teach," which documents how teachers are trained to avoid imparting knowledge (and thus avoid being "authority figures") so that students can sit in circles, brandish their ignorance of Aristotelian logic (that being the creation of a white guy and thus a tool of oppression), and employ their mastery of "critical thinking skills" (i.e., accelerated whining skills) to "construct" their own knowledge about some Maoist sociologist's nocturnal emission of a topic, a topic about which the students themselves know nothing whatsoever.

Heartbreaking stuff, but everyone needs to know about it.

Though I suspect that most readers of this book are conservatives, it is not a book for conservatives only. Liberals who admired Daniel Patrick Moynihan will find an awful lot to like in "The Burden of Bad Ideas," and even old-fashioned socialists (the ones who still use "reason" as a word of praise) will grimly nod their heads at Mac Donald's attack on the celebration of the irrational in our universities and professional schools. I'm generally an optimist myself, but on the topics Mac Donald covers, I'm afraid all of us need to be looking grim.

5 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to thought of Manhattan Institute.......2007-03-28

I am very interested in seeing social problems solved. Once upon a time, I was a true believer in Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty. I was a total supporter of LBJ's efforts to create social justice through massive spending.

As the 1960s turned into the 1970s, and the 1980s into the 1990s, I came to see that the War on Poverty just was not working. Those of us who want to see poverty ended needed new ideas. Liberals refused to re-think their ideas, so I stopped being a liberal. I started looking around for new ideas.

One of the best sources of new ideas that I have found is the City Journal, the magazine put out by the Manhattan Institute. This group was closely aligned with Rudy Guiliani's marvelous turn around of New York City. Heather MacDonald is one of their writers. Her work covers a wide variety of subjects, from crime to education. Her general subject is the idiocy of standard liberalism. All of her essays are carefully researched and well argued. While this book is a bit dated at this point, it is still well worth reading, particularly for those who have not yet left the Democratic Party.

1 out of 5 stars She Hates Herself!.......2006-02-04

MacDonald is an elitist: she wants what worked for her in her life to be the model for society and everybody else should just deal. But, as Richard Brookhiser wrote in his biography of Alexander Hamilton, what made Hamilton a great American is that he found a way to generalize his successes and achievements so that all Americans could follow in his footsteps. He didn't simply say: "I have great gifts, too bad for everybody else." That is the attitude that the Founders had for our Democracy. MacDonald, an elitist, would have sided with the King of England.

2 out of 5 stars Just ideas that go against the author's politics.......2005-12-17

I chose this book quickly before a business trip thinking from the title that it was going to be an engineering-style analysis of various bad ideas that held sway for a long time despite being clearly wrong. Just reading the back of the book, though, makes it clear that this book is about modern policies that the author disagrees with.

It's so one-sided that it could only be enjoyed by someone looking for selected facts to support regressive political positions. Counter arguments are almost never addressed. The book takes a self-righteous tone that gets tiresome after a while.

Some of the points she makes seem out-and-out wrong:

                                              1) She frequently refers to people she disagrees with as "elites". Often these are the people who at least claim to be trying to do something to help the neediest members of society. It seems to me that the "elites" would be the people who don't need any help whatsoever.
                                              2) She describes a law student who was brought to tears when she was exposed to racism against her for the first time. No one should have to deal with racism, but it strikes me as funny that one incident of racism in someone's life is worthy to write about in a book. I've heard there are other aspects to law school that are more grueling than being exposed to racism one time.
                                              3) Often times it seems like the author's arguments are meant to appeal to the reader's envy. She is reminding people that wasteful projects to help the needy are costing people who aren't needy. Isn't the more important issue that resources are being wasted that could have helped more needy people? Not for the author.

I try to ask myself how I would react if the book were equally one-sided and superficial but put forward ideas that I personally agreed with. After all, I have enjoyed reading through Michael Moore's books which are even less balanced and intellectual than this book. Why do I like Moore's books more? Maybe it's because he has fun with the ideas; I'm not sure.

I cannot recommend this book except to someone who already agrees with regressive politics and wants some easy reading.

                                              2 out of 5 stars unreadable.......2005-06-08

After the first 20 pages of the book you will already have heard everything the author has to say, it's all about racism and sexism.

It's good to see someone exposing on the fact that anti-sexist, anti-classist and anti-racist thinking is shaping the way many things are handled, some good points are made in this book but the truth is that once you have read 20 pages you have read the whole book, all it does is blame the same factors on everything and I found myself skimming thru the 3 later chapters trying to find something new to read about, but it just keeps on going on the same thing.

This book may be novel and insightful, but the author lacks the writing skills to put it together into a coherent and readable essay on the subject.

not worth buying, not by a long shot

A Guide for the Technical Evaluation of Environmental Data presents the insight you need for evaluating analytical data obtained from environmental samples. Often, analyses performed on a few samples can lead to misplaced concern on the wrong analytes. For example, a geologist would know which trace metals might be naturally present in the source rock underlying a site, but not know which metals should be expected because of tire wear or which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons would be present because of a nearby powerplant. This book provides you with references to support decision making regarding selection of contaminants.
