Book Description
Stoic, unflappable, determined --all words used to describe Tyrone Willingham-- also represent the remarkable character of a man whose entire life has demanded poise under pressure. While Willingham became a household name during his first season as head football coach of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, this book goes behind the scenes and listens to the voices of the people who helped shape the athlete, the coach and the man. From his roots in Kinston, N.C., to his playing career at Michigan State and his 18-year coaching odyssey that included stops at his alma mater, Stanford and the NFL, we observe how every assignment was for a purpose. Whether he was performing as an athlete or a coach, Willingham, it seems, was never anybody's first choice. But he always responds in a first-class manner. A walk-on athlete at Michigan State, Willingham would earn three letters each in football and baseball. As perhaps the fourth or fifth choice to become head coach at Notre Dame, Willingham answered the call and led the Irish to a 10-3 record and bowl appearance. Bob Davie had been fired as Notre Dame's head coach after the disappointing 5-6 season of 2001. Willingham then replaced George O'Leary, who had been forced to resign because of embellishments on his resume. Willingham would become the first African-American head coach in the history of Notre Dame.

A truly remarkable leader's life and career.......2003-11-14
Tyrone Willingham: The Meaning Of Victory is a straightforward, informative biography by sportswriter Fred Mitchell of the justifiably famous athlete and coach Tyrone Willingham, whose service to Notre Dame as head coach (the first African-American head coach in Notre Dame's history) showed the world collegiate football just what his team could do. Bright, full color photographs add a vibrant touch to this straightforward telling of a truly remarkable leader's life and career.
Book Description
This work contains 41 engaging essays on players of the silent screen, from superstars like Rudolph Valentino and Clara Bow to fascinating figures like Clarine Seymour and Arthur Johnson. These stories range from the tragic (early deaths, drug problems, talkie-related career failures) to the triumphant (a surprising number of silent stars enjoyed long, happy lives). Many of these personalities have never before been covered in depth, and their careers highlight the entire silent era, from its beginnings in the 1890s to its demise in the late 1920s. These essays, earlier versions of which were published in Classic Images, have been completely reedited and rewritten, reflecting information later made available to the author.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have for Silent Screen Lovers.......2003-11-05
This is a wonderful book. The author has done her homework and her picks from the famous to the forgotten were excellent choices. If she couldn't confirm a rumor, rather than speculate, or worse yet, sensationalize, she plainly stated the answer would probably never be found.
I recommend this book for all lovers of the silent era. I only wish that Ms.Golden could do full length bios on these people.
Left You Wanting More.......2002-10-29
This book provides 4-5 page biographies of many silent film stars. Some are very familiar to film buffs such as Rudolph Valentino, the Talmadge Sisters, etc. but others are not as familiar such as Martha Mansfield, Milton Sills, etc. Golden's writing style is so easy to read and she has done a great deal of research. Many of the biographies left you wanting to read a great deal more about many of these people. I would recommend this for all silent film buffs!
Biographies of silent film giants and obscure actors.......2002-01-03
This wonderful book contains 41 short (5-6 pages each) biographies of silent film actors and actresses. Some like Clara Bow, William Haines, and Rudolph Valentino have been covered more in-depth by other biographers. However, there is no other book that covers the life and careers of Marie Prevost, Milton Sills, Arthur Johnson, Clarine Seymour, Harrison Ford (not Indiana Jones), Pearl White, and Wallace Reid. Even famous personalities who just made a few film appearances like May Irwin and Ormer Locklear are covered. Many of these performers died before the silent era was even over, which is why they are virtually unknown today. These essays were originally written for CLASSIC IMAGES magazine, but have been updated for the book. Ms. Golden's bios are well researched and very easy to read. If you are interested in silent film performers, you will want this book!
Golden showers us with excitement!.......2001-08-24
Before I read Eve's books, I couldn't tell Buster Keaton from Michael Keaton. I kept confusing Anita Page and Doris Hill with Anita Hill. This woman knows more about Virgina Bradford than Bradford herself. Her book has opened my eyes to the wonderful genre that is The Silent Movie. Eve has taught me not to laugh at the name Richard Dix. She's explained that Charlie Chaplin doesn't wear that moustache and glasses because he's in the Witness Protection Program.
I could go on forever about this book, but I think I'll leave you all with a quote from my favorite silent movie: " ".
A great addition to the library of any film lover.......2001-04-25
Eve Golden as always does her homework on her subjects, and then brings them to life wth insight and warmth. A great collection of Hollywood's known and lesser-known characters-- briskly written, it's a good read.

Customer Reviews:
A Requirement for Future Appraisers, Yes, BUT.............2006-03-02
If you are planning on taking your local state appraiser's exam, you no doubt will be required to purchase this text. It is, for better or worse, a "standard" in the industry. Unfortunately, as a professional educator with 17 years college teaching experience, I can honestly say that this book is incredibly verbose, repetitive, and badly organized. This 600+ page tome could EASILY be reduced by 50% (or more) without losing ANY necessary/vital information. If you have ever had to read a book on managment or education, then you KNOW what I am saying here. For published works on real estate appraisal that are concise, to-the-point, and not mind-numbingly boring, look elsewhere........
Book Description
This book, reprinted form the rare 1769 Dublin edition, allows Major Rogers to tell portions of his life in his own words. To supplement his account, numerous annotations have added by Timothy Todish to give a broader picture of the events described. Gary Zaboly's original illustrations, along with page-length captions, add an invaluable dimension to this edition. A special contribution is his chapter on the uniforms worn by Robert's Rangers.
Customer Reviews:
WHAT A GUY.......2007-07-09
A SHAME HE HAD TO END UP LIKE HE DID...HE WAS A REAL AMERICAN HERO.
Three Fine Books in One.......2004-07-19
This edition of the _Journals of Major Robert Rogers_ is really three books in one, and that amounts to a major treat for anyone even remotely interested in the struggle for colonial America's frontier.
Major Robert Rogers was one of early America's greatest frontier soldiers, and the feats performed by Rogers' Rangers are the stuff of legend. Despite the self-serving nature of Rogers' memoirs (and whose memoirs are not self-serving?), this work remains an essential source on the French and Indian War.
The annotations supplied by editor Timothy J. Todish, a longtime Rogers' Rangers reenactor and a widely published student of 18th and 19th century American military history, greatly increase the value of this edition. Todish provides the kind of insights, additional information, and corrections that can come only from someone who is thoroughly familiar with the subject.
The book's crowning touch comes from the twenty-two illustrations by Gary S. Zaboly, an accomplished historical artist whose knowledge of Robert Rogers and his times is unmatched by anyone working in the field today. Zaboly wrote short essays explaining each one of his illustrations, along with an authoritative, 31-page examination of the uniforms worn by Rogers' Rangers.
By combining the talents of Rogers, Todish, and Zaboly, this handsome volume serves as a window opening on some of the most harrowing and thrilling episodes in American history. This book is a must for anyone interested in colonial America, the Eastern Woodland Indians, and the French and Indian War.
Roger¿s Journals Finally Go Snap, Crackle & Pop.......2003-07-31
No one lived through more extraordinary adventures than Major Robert Rogers: they were bone-chilling, hair-raising. But Rogers understates them. Spine-tingling events historians know-from others who were present-that Rogers lived through he skipped over. Once he jumped twelve feet into a river to escape capture by French and Indians and never even mentioned it. Perhaps Rogers was a genuinely modest man. Perhaps his "adventures" were scarey memories he didn't wish to revisit. Perhaps it was bad judgment mixed with a phlegmatic mind. Low key or not, Roger's journals are standard reading for history buffs of the French and Indian War. Todish and Zaboly imminently enhance Roger's accounts without altering them, to the point readers glimpse an exceptional man. Todish indents his annotations in the middle of the narrative at to flesh out details of time, place, and historical significance. His scholarship is first rate: insertions are by others who were present, or are comments from earlier Rogers scholars. His co-author, Zaboly, takes great care to make the his illustrations historically accurate in lieu of setting, clothing, and military accouterments. Drawings are a page or two pages wide, with an accompanying page of explanation of included details. These chosen details are themselves footnoted to their museum source. If one decides to read Roger's journals, read them in this edition.
History brought to Life.......2002-09-08
A creation of the two greatest experts on Robert Rogers and his Rangers, this book is a must for all American history buffs. Not only is Rogers' own journal reproduced, but Todish and Zaboly both contribute fascinating and insightful introductions. If there is any more to be learned about Rogers, it will be found in Zaboly's forthcoming full-scale biography. His numerous full page highly detailed illustrations add immeasurably to this work's appeal. For those who are interested in the period, to miss this volume would be a sin.
Outstanding.......2002-05-13
Very well done book. This book will add alot to the knowledge on the French and Indian War. And one of the most colorful people of that time. If you would like to understand more about the modern army rangers and the past history of this great nation this is the book.

Book Description
The treatise On swords and their kinds was written by the 9th-century Muslim philosopher Ya'qkub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi. This work was commissioned by a powerful patron of scholarship, the Abbasid caliph Mu'tasim, and the content of the treatise presumably reflects the ruler's general interest in his army and its equipment, and his specific interest in the technical aspects of sword production. In this work, Kindi discusses the difference between iron and steel, distinguishes different qualities of sword blade, and different centers of swordsmithing. He refers to the Indian Ocean trade in steel ingots and to the distinctive character of European swords of the period. He includes technical terms used by the makers, and distinguishes swords by their physical features - form, measurements, weight, watered pattern, sculptured details, or inlaid ornaments. This publication includes the text and a translation of Kindi's treatise, and a detailed commentary on the work. The volume also includes translation of Friedrich Schwarzlose's work on swords, which is based on the hundreds of references to swords in early Arabic poetry. Written in German, this extraordinary compendium of information was first published some 120 years ago; this volume makes it available again, and for the first time in English.
Customer Reviews:
Welcome Addition to the History of Metal Working.......2006-11-11
Although we have all seen the drawings and tapestries from the middle ages showing Islamic warriors carrying swords, there is very little available on the technical aspects of these weapons.
There are several reasons for this:
Historically we have paid a lot more attention to the history, both political and technological of Europe than we have to the Middle East.
There wasn't a great deal written about such subjects anyway. The technology involved were closely guarded secrets of the family/clan/village that produced the swords. Publishing these secrets would allow others to capitalize on this knowledge.
A lot of the material that was written was lost, or perhaps deliberately destroyed as it did not necessarily reflect on the religious ferver of the people.
This book is a new translation of several documents that were written in the time as well as other documents that were written later but never available before in English. It is, perhaps the best source available, not only on swords, but on the production of iron and steel during the time. The authors are not only translators, but experts on the subject. Their commentary goes a long way to describing the meaning behind the actual translations.
This book is a welcome addition to the library of the history of metalworking.
Book Description
Winner of the Speech Communication's Winans-Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address Zarefsky examines the dynamics of the seven 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates, placing them in historical context and explaining the complicated issue of slavery in the territories, their focal point. He elucidates the candidates' arguments, analyzes their rhetorical strategies, and shows how public sentiment is transformed.
