I read until 4;00 AM finishing this fascinating book. It kept my interest and exceeded the high recommendation from another reader. The experience of actually living in that house must have been heaven for a person who has such a strong interest in the houses of that era.
Written with a Passion.......2006-08-25
Ms. Randall is very passionate in her interests of the former Gold Coast of Long Island. Her passion carries through clearly in this book of Woolworth's old estate in Glen Cove. Having visited the estate several times in the past I can say she's right on target in her descriptions. She ties the present to the past of Winfield together very well. As you read this you can almost picture yourself standing in the midst of the characters; its that descriptive. If you have never seen the old estate there are photographs as well to bring you there. While non-fiction, one can't help but feel some creative license has been taken in the writing. No matter, since the book is entertaining in the oddity of Winfield's present, as well as in it's less than stellar heyday due largely to it's eccentric owner, Frank W. Woolworth. Well worth your time

I just loved this book. Having read and loved Monica Randall's book [first edition] Mansions of the Long Island Gold Coast I was especially interested in reading more about her adventures on the North Shore of Long Island. I wasn't disappointed. This book is well written and offers a wonderful view into Monica Randall's life as she worked, sometimes undercover of night, to document and save the mansions and their contents. Her story is a haunting tale that focuses on Winfield, her connections to it, and the brief time she spent living in it, while sharing her connection with other of the famous mansions, both lost and saved.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend, then after scanning its jacket, was unable to gift it until I read it!
It was gripping, interesting, and because I read it three nights running before falling asleep, altering. Unlike deliberate horror stories, its potential reality was just enough to scare the beejeebers out of me, yet I could not put it down.
Monica says little about her odd relationship with the owner of Winfield, and I can't help but wonder what happened there, but she is respectful of the relationship and instead tells a fascinating tale of old money, old houses and old memories.
It's a wonderful tale.
What a Wonderful Life (And Afterlife).......2005-07-23
I envy Monica Randall her ability to throw herself passionately into everything she does. She reminds me of the character Diane Lane plays in UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN. It's almost as though she had been reincarnated and a piece of her (perhaps her old soul) still wanted to cling to the heyday of the Gold Coast mansions of Long Island, which, when she was coming of age in the 1950s and 1960s, were all coming down, torn to pieces, their vast acreages sold to developers to put up ticky tacky development housing. As Randall explains, the Second World War was a two edges sword. Not only did it become impossible to find good help, because any servant could make better wages doing war work in defense plants and factories, but after the war many young men received the GI Bill which in turn created an overwhelming demand for family housing on a mass scale, and this is what led to the abandonment of most of these estates.
She and her sister set out to save the elegant furnishings and electrical work, and thus she snagged many Tiffany lamps and other window-like decorations when she was still a teenager. They were just in the rubbish, or in the way of an uncaring bulldozer, so she would just put them in her car. I'd love to see her Tiffany collection, for example. Perhaps she will make that the subject of her next book.
In the meantime she has given us a tale of shivers and evil. I grew tense reading about the one Gold Coast mansion with its parquet floors, each stone was actually, if you looked closely, a tombstone from a child's grave! How depraved was the owner of such an evil house! No wonder the sad voices of children and other victims of a predatory capitalism continue to speak as we visit what remains of the place of their shame and their abuse.
It's not a consoling book, but it will keep you up all night, so try to read this one during the daytime, with the curtains wide open, to let in the sun, let it dapple the pages of this enchanting tour de force.

Clyde Drexler was always my favorite player not only for his on the court play but for his off the court demeanor. He was always friendly and a perfect gentlemen. This book just reenforces those attributes and shows a man who is content and proud of his career.

Clyde the Glide was One of My Favorites when I was a Kid. he was always on point from Phi slamma Jamma to His days with Portland to Houston. He was a champion a Winner on the Court&Off the Court. this Book is cool because it gives his takes on various stages of his career also it has former players,coaches,etc.. who speak on what they thought of his Great career. Clyde Drexler is One of the Greatest Players Ever.

This was a great book about one of the nicest, classiest players the NBA has produced. Very insiteful, lots of good comments from family, friends, former coaches and players. I also have always loved reading anything that Kerry Eggers writes -- one of Oregon's best sports writers of all time.
The only one little thing that was missing for me -- being an absolute sports junky -- were the lack of season-by-season stats that any great biography has at the end of the book. There's nothing better than looking over regular season and playoff stats about the individual you're reading about like in so many other great sports books.
The copy I purchased also had a DVD included with an interview of Clyde. I was hoping to pop it in and see some highlight material from his playing days, but all that you see is Clyde sitting in a chair the entire DVD saying basically the same things he said in the book. Kind of a downer also.
All-in-all, I rate it a five for just a solid sports book (minus stats, mind you). This coming from a Blazer fan you loved the teams of the 80s and early 90s when Clyde, Porter, Kersey, Buck, Duck and Uncle Cliffy were lighting up the NBA!

Helpful Liturgical Commentary.......2007-04-04
The Ceremonial of Bishops is not a liturgical rites book, as a Sacramentary or the Rite of Baptism would be. Rather, it is like a "how to" guide for priests, deacons and other liturgical ministers when participating at a Mass or other liturgical events where a bishop presides. It is particulary helpful for deacons and acolytes, they who would interact with the bishop most frequently during a particular liturgy, especially the Mass.
Documents like the General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) and the General Instruction on the Liturgy of the Hours (GILH) would tell you why it is theologically and liturgically important for the bishop, as chief shepherd and liturgist, to preside at the liturgy. The Ceremonial of Bishops is great because it says, given the GIRM and GILH, here is what you do.
Good resource for episcopal (and that doesn't mean "Episcopalian") services.......2006-08-11
The Ceremonial of Bishops is the most complete book of its kind, which is somewhat unfortunate. As another review has noted, it does not contain a complete ceremonial, but frequently refers the reader to other texts (e.g., GIRM, Rites, etc.); however, for a liturgist/MC/archdeacon, these should all be handy and familiar, making the omission more an inconvenience than a serious flaw. Having said that, the user of this book MUST have and be familiar with these references.
The overall format will be familiar to anyone who has picked up a standard Roman Catholic book of this type (paragraphs are numbered for easy reference). The book review those items, actions, and liturgies that are proper to a bishop. This means that services which are also performed by a priest are not covered in their entirety, but only where the pontifical rites differ. Thus, there is no full discussion on the celebration of Holy Eucharist, but there are specific differences noted (the full discussion can be found in other rituals).
The audience of this books is necessarily narrow, as it is really useful only to those who are Bishops, those who will become bishops, those who serve bishops, and those researching things about bishops. It really does not need to be in every parish sacristy, although it would not be a bad addition. It need not be reviewed by all clergy either; they would be better served by reading St. Gregory's "Pastoral Care" (Vol. 11 in Ancient Christian Writers series), or the letters of St. Ignatius (vol. 1 in the same), which will be more practical.
Its ok but lacking.......2004-11-07
I bought this book with the hope that it would be an actual ceremonial, its not. This book only contains parts of ceremonies and prayers and then refers to other texts for the complete ceremony. I did like certain parts of this text but all in all it really lacks the information which the title boasts. If you are looking for a true ceremonial then buy The Rites vol. 2 that particular text has most of the complete ceremonies which the ceremonial of bishops begins. The Rites vol 2 also costs half of this one.
For all masters of ceremonies for liturgical celebrations.......1999-12-08
This typical volume is for all who are interested in the proper way to conduct liturgical celebrations. Eventhough the title is 'Ceremonial of Bishops', the contents of this book can also be applied to liturgies at which the bishop does not preside over. Very practical. After studying it, I have learnt just how taken for granted a properly conducted liturgy is in many churches in where I live.

accuracy?.......2007-06-09
This book has some either inaccurate or obsolete statements, Benson recommends for instance to buy ball bearings and then anneal them to produce the sought after fragmentation load..at 20 cents apiece this is about 70 times the cost/shot,compared to just buying steel shots for handloading waterfowl hunters (size F)..and you dont have to anneal them either.
Furthermore the propellant used in this book is three sticks of 80% "hi drive" dynamite..there are so much better propellants out there (even for the improviser)especially since he only warms the sticks and then bends them a little to conform to the concave shape..much better to knead them to a dough in such case.
Some of the pictures are of non-explainatory quality eg. with just a cloud of smoke and then a brief text:
"-Upon initial firing, it is obvious that a shaped charge effect has been ahieved." No, from the picture it might just as well be someone who has been eating (a lot) of beans the previous day..
However The book has some useful information aswell so not all is lost, but I do feel that if you already have knowledge about mines and explosives this book doesnt offer anything new, and if you have no experience, this book is not for you still, because it does not tell you all you have to know to produce these devices ( and certainly not to the standard the book tells you)

This is absolutely ridiculous, since nor the explosive used, nor the shape of the mine body is to the same specs as most factory made devices..he has forgotten that there is not just a convex shape to widen the spread horizontally, there is often also a slight concave form in the other direction (still on the front side) to help lessen the spread in the vertical direction, without this, much of the fragmentation load vill spread into the dirt or up in the sky.This is also not up to specs of hit propability.
If he had a cronograph to measure the speed of the fragments it would have been a little more substance to his claims perhaps, but as is now, he just makes educated guesses..
(As he usually does when guesstimating VOD:s in his other books.)
the test shooting through a piece of paper says nothing of the actual effect.
Not one of his best books, and the two star rating is set on a day when the sun is shining, its on the borderline of a one-star.
