And ...Howe!: An Authorized Autobiography
ASIN: 1552093956 |
Book Description
Known for decades throughout North America as "Mr. Hockey," Gordie Howe played 32 full seasons in the NHL (and WHA). During that time, he and the Red Wings won four Stanley Cups and nine Prince of Wales Trophies (most points in the regular season). He won the Hart Trophy (League MVP) six times, the Art Ross Trophy (most individual points) six times, and appeared in 20 All-Star games.
His career statistics (including the WHA) are (with the singular exception of Wayne Gretzky), unparalleled in the history of the sport:

Howe's numbers for total games played (2,421) and total penalty minutes (2,419) are extraordinary. He was among the strongest, toughest and most talented players on the ice. In his late forties he was still feared and revered by men half his age.
Lavishly illustrated with images from the Harold Barkley Archives plus dozens of pieces (photos and memorabilia) from the Howe family's own extensive collection, Gordie Howe is a fitting tribute to "Mr. Hockey."
Customer Reviews:
Mr. Hockey, plain and simple..........1999-12-23
I read this book back in November of 1999. The co-author Frank Condron did an excellent job with Gordie Howe in putting this historical book together. On top of the simple fact that a picture is worth 1,000 words. The whole book is a Hockey Pictoral Treasure. Mr. Condron did an excellent job of writing this book. What I mean by that is. Simply because you don't feel your reading Gordies words. Its like Mr. Howe is right next to you and he is pointing at each picture as you turn every page. Also it is quite obvious after all the press, awards and fame, Gordie Howe is still a gentleman.
TRUE HOCKEY MEMORBILIA!.......1999-12-19
This work represents the finest photo collection of GORDIE HOWE'S career to date. If YOU are old enough to remember the epic battles between the Montreal Canadians and the Detroit Red Wings of the 1950's-60's, YOU can relive these times in photo concepts - eg. Howe's 545 goal in the Montreal Forum eclipsing Rocket Richards's record and the 15 minute standing ovation by Montreal fans; Howe's commentary on the Montreal dynasty once Jacque Plante and Jean Bellevue arrived on the hockey scene; the skilled fis-ti-cuffs of Gordie Howe against bad boy, Lou Fontinato of the New York Rangers; and Howe's best picks of NHL players he most admired! ... get an education, Mr. Joseph........2007-05-16
Put simply, 'slue' is not a synonym of 'rotate.' Furthermore, to judge from the amount of recycling in these 'puzzles,' I estimate Mr. Joseph's vocabulary to consist of not more than six or seven hundred words, approximately the same as my two-year-old daughter's.
complete hack.......2006-12-27
Thomas Joseph is the king of recycled clues and answers. If, like me, your daily paper carries his crossword puzzles, you may be familiar with the fact that you are guaranteed to see at least three recycled answers within a one week period in his crosswords. So if you're looking for an easy crossword puzzle book this is an okay choice, but if you want any challenge at all, avoid Joseph like the plague. Thomas Joseph gets absolutely no points for creativity or imagination.
An excellent, medium difficulty crossword book. Great fun!.......1999-01-16
Thomas Joseph is hands-down, my absolute favorite master of crossword puzzles. My only complaint is that he doesn't have dozens of books available for purchase! His puzzle is featured daily in our local newspaper, and is the last thing I do after reading the entire paper (always save the best for last). I got "100 Clever Crosswords" for Christmas this year and had flown through 20 puzzles on Christmas Day before I realized I'd have to pace myself or use up all the fun before the week was out!
Thomas Joseph's crossword puzzles are easy enough to complete without having to dig through reference guides, but challenging enough that you have to work through the entire puzzle to get the answers to a few difficult clues. Completing his puzzles brings a great deal of satisfaction, but also a little sadness that it's done.
Mr. Joseph -- please, please, please! publish more of these wonderful books!!

Book Description
Think you know the law? Guess again—the cases on this docket may open your eyes and have you arguing for appeal. They’re drawn from actual United States court records and selected for their intriguing facts and surprising outcomes. Can you figure out the verdicts? The answers are not as obvious as you might think. Experienced attorneys will enjoy testing their knowledge, and so will anyone interested in a challenging game that is certain to provoke heated discussions among friends. The cases are organized according to typical law school curricula, and each decision includes the court holdings and a brief explanation. In addition to such areas as contract and criminal law, the cases include second and third year “electives,” like wills and estates.
Customer Reviews:
The Verdict is In.......2005-01-04
Guess the Verdict is a fun and challenging way to learn how cases are decided in many areas of the law. It starts with summaries of cases culled from a typical first year of law school, such as Criminal Law, Contracts, and Property, and then delves into other interesting areas of the law, including Intellectual Property and Employment and Labor Law. The fun of this book is that the reader is required to test herself to see if she can figure out the verdict of each case. The author suggests reading the book on your own, or using the book as a game, with two players acting as lawyers arguing the case, or with three players, having one participate as a judge.
You can read Guess the Verdict in a few sittings or pick it up and then put it down after reviewing only a case or two. Each of the case summarizes describes the facts of real cases in a way that makes reading about the law fun and engaging
If you are a fan of legal thrillers and TV shows like Law & Order or you are thinking of going to law school and want to get a flavor for what you will be studying, Guess the Verdict is the book for you.
great collection of courtroom puzzles.......2005-01-02
This is a splendid little book of legal puzzles. It's an entertaining way to learn how the basics of law are applied in real life cases. It's very similar to the book, What's the Verdict? by Ted LeValliant from the same publisher - which I also recommend. The only quibble I have with the book, is that it would probably been a more challenging work if the final verdicts were separate from the appeals. But it's a fine little book!
Congrats Helaine! You're a babe and please write up some more!:.)))

Book Description
Amarillo Slim Preston has won $300,000 from Willie Neslon playing dominoes and $2 million from Larry Flynt playing poker. He has shuffled, dealt, and bluffed with some of twentieth-century's most famous figures. He beat Minnesota Fats at pool with a broom, Bobby Riggs at table tennis with a skillet, and Evel Knievel at golf with a carpenter's hammer. Amarillo Slim has gambled with 'em all, and left most of them wishing they hadn't.
The memoirs of a living American icon,
Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People is the story of life as a Texas road gambler and the discovery of the Wild West. It's also the story of how Slim won the World Series of Poker at Binion's Horseshoe, became a worldwide celebrity, and brought poker from smoky backrooms to mainstream America. Just let him tell it:
"If there's anything I'll argue about, I'll either bet on it or shut up. And since it's not very becoming for a cowboy to be arguing, I've made a few wagers in my day. But in my humble opinion, I'm no ordinary hustler. You see, neighbor, I never go looking for a sucker. I look for a champion and make a sucker out of him ..."
"I'm fixing to tell you a few things that I've been keeping to myself for a lot of years. If you're not careful, you just might learn how to get rich without ever having a job."
Customer Reviews:
Very Entertaining!.......2007-08-26
This was a very entertaining book. The stories in here will keep you interested from the beginning all the way to the end. It is written in colorful language and allows you to kind of get inside Slim's head. It is a short 264 pages filled with wild stories of how Slim would gamble on almost anything and win. You may not agree with everything written in these pages but you will definitely get a few laughs along the way.
Slim talks about human psychology and what role that plays in gambling. One of his sayings is "never make a bet unless the bet is already one." And through these pages he reveals his secrets to doing just that. I think there are a number of useful things that anyone could pick up and find useful in their own lives from some psychology to a number of bets that anyone could make others that could almost be guaranteed winners. One of the last things Slim says is, "making peace with yourself is the first thing a winner must do."
If you have any interest in the mind of a gambler and like outrageous stories involving risk then I think you will enjoy this book.
Great stories.......2007-07-05
Fast read on a fast pace of a fast life. Amusing and entertaining, and probably educational if you pay attention. The lessons aren't presented as such, but if you follow the pattern of his betting, you learn not to get sucked into a bad deal. Not going to win a Pulitzer, but a great light read if you like biographies, poker, Texas or characters. He makes Huck Finn look like an altar boy.
The Elephant in the Room.......2007-04-20
Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People is a autobiography of Slim focusing (unsurprisingly) on his gambling exploits.
The upside of this book is that it's very entertaining & well written. For a lot of people, that may be more than enought it make it worth their time. The gambling yarns contained within are some of the most incredible I've seen in print, and I'm a fan of the genre.
Unfortunately, there are serious issues of Slim's honesty and integrity surrounding this book.
The first, and more minor, issue is that the book is largely assembled from Slim's previous "Play Poker To Win" and Holden's "Big Deal," often taken nearly word for word from those sources. Not only is this a bit of a raw deal for readers who already have those books, but I'm a little curious why Holden is credited and quoted for some of the sections he wrote, but others masquerade as Slim's voice. I hope nothing dirty is going on here plagiarism-wise, but I'm suspicious.
The second, more serious, issue, is that this is a self-flattering autobiography by a man of very questionable morals. There's no doubt, reading this book, that Slim thinks quite highly of himself. But his actions don't exactly support his opinion. He's a self admitted gambling cheat and liar. In fact, the allegations of cheating go far beyond what he admits to in the book - the depth of his association with Johnny Moss' dirty card rooms and and various mechanics on the Texas circuit was not discussed. Worse yet, there's good reason to believe that Slim is a pedophile. He was arrested on three charges of indecency with his 12-year old granddaughter in 2003, apparently confessed to police, and then plead guilty to reduced charges. His wife divorced him over the incident. Sources in the poker community say that Slim maintains his innocence and claims it was a scheme by a faction of his family to get a hold of his money, but that doesn't explain the confession.
Final Verdict: I WANT to like this book, but a good book glorifying a bad man looses a lot of its luster. In light of that I can't bring myself to like Slim, or his book, nearly as much as he likes himself.
Hilarious!.......2006-09-22
This book is really funny but it isn't going to teach you anything really about gambling and poker. He does give a few pointers, but it is basically the story of his life and what a story it was. It is a very easy book to read and enjoyable for anyone who likes gambling.
The most entertaining poker book ever..........2005-09-27
In a way it's fitting that the most entertaining poker book ever written contains total detail about the most dramatic game of poker ever played, by the greatest card man of the twentieth century. I'm talking about the truly legendary, Thomas Austin "Amarillo Slim" Preston. His amazing book, Amarillo Slim In A World Full of Fat People, is for poker what the BBC's Top Gear is to motoring: funny, wicked, informative and entertaining. If Jeremy Clarkeson is reading this, that wipes out any future poker debts I might accrue!
In the early nineties, Slim was invited help launch the Casino de Caribe in Cartagena, Columbia by casino boss Lynn Simon. Amarillo was flattered to be asked at this late stage in his career only to discover that he would be playing some of the deepest untaxed pockets in the world:namely, the major drug lords of the Columbian cartels. Playing poker for the very highest stakes is nerve racking at the best of times: now just imagine that you're about to have a showdown with Pablo Escobar, probably the most feared cold-blooded killer on Earth. Turns out Pablo just wanted to be friends and show Slim his mansion, his zoo and that he was in charge of Columbia. Once this had been established, Escobar's helicopter dropped Amarillo back at the Caribe. The tall Texan then proceeded to financially disable some of the deadliest Cartel bosses, under protection from a Swiss style physical safety agreement, which they honoured under pain of death from Escobar. Apparently Pablo himself didn't fair well at poker against the card playing cowboy, leaving the Columbian poker challenge to come from his under bosses, who lost the equivalent of 'a week's supply' to the six foot four American.
By the third day the physical safety agreement broke down when one of the Cali Cartel bosses decided to shoot a disloyal girlfriend with a pump action shotgun about a yard from where Amarillo was standing. This should have been Slim's signal to catch the next jet home to Texas but he readily confesses to a liking for danger and besides, a quote from the man himself betrays another reason to stay: "I'd never seen men with more money and less brains than these drug lords." The cowboy stayed and rounded up a mountain of cash before high-tailing it back to cattle country.
In the lives of most card players, the above true story would stand out as the most remarkable of adventures, but trust me, to a man who had won a million dollars by the age of 19, played poker with two Presidents and driven a golf ball over a mile, it was just one of many.

Globalization and Tribes - Interesting Relationship.......2007-03-08
This is a great book for those who have always wondered why there are Chinese restaurants all over the world and the presence of synagogues in even the most odd of places. Describes the relationships of cultural groups such as the Chinese, Jews, Indians, Arabs, etc. across the globe and how they work together and rely on one another even though they are spread all over the planet.
there is a dark side of strategizing ethnic groups.......2004-01-01
There is a dark side of disproportionate wealth and it's explored in depth in "World on Fire" by Amy Chua. I read there that in the Philippines the ethnic Chinese make up one percent of the population, but control seventy percent of the wealth. One danger is that there can be an ethnic cleansing as another reviewer mentioned. Another danger is destroying democracy, since the economically dominant minority wouldn't tolerate it after reaching such an extreme disparity of wealth. I hope USA doesn't end up like the Philippines.
A great book on the dynamic link between culture and wealth.......2001-12-06
This is a great book that has a keen and insightful look into how certain cultures and ethnic groups rise to prominence in a global economy. The author focuses on five "Tribes": the Jews, the British, the Japanese, the Chinese, and the Indians. Kotkin is always fair, objective, and intelligent when it comes to explaining how and why these groups have developed the "cultural capital" to attain disproportionate economic success.
Kotkin lays out his work in an excellent chronological manner, which strongly demonstrates the dynamic nature on how these groups rose economically over the course of history and time. He also notes differences between the groups and some problems within them, such as pointing out the more centralized and "engineered" rise of the Japanese "Tribe", or the decline of the British work ethic.
Kotkin then neatly follows these 5 groups with a discussion on what he perceives as "future Tribes" rising in economic success and wealth, such as Mormons and Palestinians (who are by far the most educated, entrepreneurial, and enterprising people in the Arab world; just look at the pre-1991 Kuwaiti economy). This dynamist and forward-looking perspective cements Kotkins narrative being very progressive and non-prejudiced.
Although, as mentioned, Kotkin is extremely fair and objective, it is important to point out that he does come from a certain perspective, namely a kind of neoliberal and neolibertarian outlook that places a strong emphasis on cultural dynamism (i.e., cultures as organic and evolving, rather than having determined, static boundaries). I happen to greatly agree with this perspective, which is probably why I personally like the book so much.
If there is one minor shortcoming of this book, it would be that Kotkin did not fully explore the dark side of disproportionate economic success in an ethnic group. There is the external dark side, namely the envy, jealousy, oppression, and even genocide faced by economically successful cultural groups, especially when they are a politically weak minority. History is replete with these stories, whether they be Indians in East Africa, Chinese in Southeast Asia, or Jews in Europe. There is also the internal dark side, whereby the economic success in an ethnic group may lead to a suffocation of individual lifestyle and cultural choices (i.e., pressure to conform) and a condescending if not bigoted view of other cultures, especially the majority cultures in ones they're living. These themes are further explored in several books by conservative author Thomas Sowell.
Overall, however, the book is a wonderful primer on this "ethno-economic" phenomenon. Any one who has ever asked the question "Why are all the nail salons 'controlled' by Vietnamese?" must read this book.
A Cosmopolitan Perspective on Business and Culture.......1998-05-07
"Tribes", by Joel Kotkin (1992 Random House) This book is necessary reading for anyone interested in learning in depth about the increasingly multicultural aspects of modern business, leadership and education. Kotkin shares a thorough and thoroughly researched understanding of the origins and growth of "Global Tribes". He discusses the history and economic impact of the diaspora cultures of the Jews, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and British.
Where many futurist authors talk about a "Post-Modern era", Kotkin frames the future as "Post Cold-War". He states that increasingly ethnic identities will determine the primary sphere of social and economic identity, and not current political identities. In the Epilogue he talks about Cosmopolis, a world dominated by cosmopolitan centers with multiethnic identities, rather than a world dominated by political identities. He ties this idea of the economic power and multicultural complexity of future cosmopolitan cities to the rise and eventual domination of great cosmopolitan cities of the past such as Alexandria, Canton, London, Rome, and others. While this is his conclusion, the bulk of the book is a very cosmopolitan discussion of the economic and social impact of the growth of five Global Tribes, and the changes that have, and will, come with them. Each culture has in common that they are largely disconnected from the culture they find themselves in, have a strong ethnic identity "a vocation of uniqueness", a strong work ethic, and a theology that allows them to work pragmatically in the business community. Of particular interest was his discussion about the rise, near decline, and limitations of the Japanese "diaspora by design". His discussion is neither prejudiced nor chauvinist, but centered on a thorough understanding of Japanese history and the perspective. For that reason alone, the book is worth reading. Other minor players in the Cosmopolis, such as Jains and Mormons, are also discusse! d. It is refreshing to read a well-researched book on global economic and political patterns that is not coloured by an American centered understanding of world developments. If one is going to consider business or leadership interactions outside of an Anglo-American perspective, there is much to think about here.

Book Description
One quarter of Americans don't drink their tap water for health or aesthetic reasons, and Canada's Walkerton tragedy confirmed people's worst fears when seven died from contaminated supplies.
This book is a clearly written, straightforward guide to North American tap water: what's in it, how it's treated, whether government regulations are strict enough, and whether consumers should be concerned about what they're drinking. It includes chapters on bottled water and home filter systems, as well as obtaining, treating and storing private water supplies, and helpful resources.
