Book Description
Combing through years of cycling literature and press archives, and seeking out friends, rivals, and the man himself, the author pieces together the disparate elements of Eddy Merckx's life. Cycling icons recollect Merckx's Tour de France victories, World Hour Record, doping scandal of 1969, and physical setbacks.
Customer Reviews:
Muddled Merckx.......2006-11-05
This is not the greatest biography of any century. Its theme is stated in the introduction and then repeated on almost every page. You can extract some useful information and perspective - but it is not easy or fun.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more information on Merckx than can easily be found on the Internet. However, I would recommend skimming or speed reading to find what you want and not bothering to read from cover to cover.
Subject-FASCINATING, Author-AWEFUL.......2002-06-29
Total agreement with the first 4 reviewers. Van Welleghem should not be writing, and if he has an editor, the editor should find another occupation. Eddy Mercxx was an idol of mine as a teenager, and still inspires my riding and racing today, several decades later. Unfortunately, this book is very poorly written--utterly repetitious, without inspiration or insight--it's making a fascinating subject a chore to explore.
Eddy Merckx: The Dullest Cyclist of the 20th Century?.......2001-06-29
Don't get me wrong: in cycling terms, Eddy Merckx is and will be the greatest rider who ever lived (Jeannie Longo another candidate, arguably). It is impossible to imagine anyone else being able to win 30% of the races he entered in a sport where just finishing is often a big deal, let alone owning the yellow, green and polka dot jerseys at the end of a single Tour de France. Eddy Merckx was a prodigious talent but, judging from this book, an astonishingly dull person. The author concentrates on Merckx the man rather than the racer and we find a lower-middle class Belgian with no schooling, no outside interests and a tendency towards complete silence. At the end of this poorly-structured and repetitive book, we feel nothing about the great dramas of the Cannibal's sporting life, his motivitations, his training methods. It seems he got on his bike, won the race and got off. Nothing heroic about any of this yet Merckx rode some of the most dramatic bike races ever.
The definitive Merckx book remains to be written. Save your money until then.
Eddy Merckx.......2000-05-18
It's a shame that Rik Van Walleghem's abilities as a writer fall so far short of Eddy Merckx's brilliance on a bicycle. This book is flabby, repetitive, poorly edited and, in the end, not very informative. The only other book I have read on bicycle racing is the equally dismal An Intimate Portrait of The Tour de France by Phillippe Brunel. In my experience, cyclists aren't stupid. They deserve better than this.
the greatest ever.......2000-03-20
This wonderful book gives the reader an intriguing insight into one of sports most decorated cavaliers. It's to no surprise that this SUPERMAN dominated his opposition with with relentless intensity, only leaving them to wonder at his feats.
The continuous comparsions to this man are not even worth mentioning because the technology has advanced so much in the last 35/40yrs. For his era he was truly in a class all of his own. I can only ever see one EDDY MERCKX, THE GREATEST CYCLIST EVER!

Book Description
For the past twenty years, Judith Barry has brought a critical perspective to contemporary art through her provocative work in video, performance, installation and sculpture as well as through her writing. Barry's long-standing concern with the impact of mediated environments on human identity is grounded in a deep historical understanding of architecture and spectacle--but she also has a fix on what's going inside our bodies and minds. Judith Barry, Projections, Mise en abyme elaborates on the issues central to Barry's oeuvre, and presents the scope of thought that she brings to her work via visual sources ranging from historical materials to contemporary film stills. Barry's cosmos is one of sliding signifiers collapsing notions of time, space, and identity, a universe where a 1970s science fiction film might exist on the same plane as the buildings of 18th century France. Truly epiphanic, the works presented here stare into the abyss of history and dare it to stare back.

Book Description
Princeton grad Erasmus Kloman was undergoing Army training at Fort Bragg in 1943 when, due to his passing knowledge of French, he was interviewed for potential involvement in "a highly confidential activity." The interview culminated in the question, "Would you be willing to volunteer for hazardous duty behind enemy lines?" He signed up for duty with the newly formed Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and after an intensive period of training in various aspects of espionage, found himself on assignment in wartime Cairo, Algiers, and Caserta. At age twenty-four with the title of OSS Acting Chief of Operations in the Mediterranean Theater, he helped organize and coordinate the actions of Special Operations (SO) teams that infiltrated Italy and occupied-France on daring sabotage missions.
The OSS teams cut and harassed enemy lines of communication, attacked vital enemy installations, organized and trained local resistance elements, and furnished intelligence to the Allied forces. The author's account of his experience coupled with his extensive research of declassified documents provides a fascinating inside view of the "shadow war" within the larger conflagration of World War II. Colorful imagery and photographs enliven a narrative that will appeal to everyone interested in true spy stories.
Customer Reviews:
Unusual Insight How Well our Young Gentleman Warriors Serve America .......2005-07-13
The book gives a new and intriguing slant on the great challenges and real successes of allied intelligence in the Mediteranian theater during WWW 2. In the process, though, it is a useful lesson on how an intelligent, well spoken young American officer of good education, character, wit and background can, without pushing, earn a counselling role to men of far higher rank, along with associates and those under his command. A very well writen and intriguing vignette.
This Was The Way War Should Have Been.......2005-05-28
Dr. Kloman was a 1943 graduate of Princeton who had gone through the Princeton ROTC program. Then to the Field Artillery as a second lieutenant. Not understanding much about shooting the big guns he was happy to volunteer for a "hazardous duty behind enemy lines."
He didn't know that he was volumteering for the OSS. But he was, and he was accepted and began training. He was young, it was an exciting time. And then he was sent to the Med for a variety of jobs, at which he says he was woefully unprepared.
The United States had no intelligence operations before the war. They had to build one from scratch. They did.
Written in a very humorous style, this book has the ring of truth, with some strong hints of Mr. Roberts. Dr. Kloman makes it clear that he fought a pretty good war. Safe, well behind the front lines, he writes with an entertaining and amusing tilt. It's only in reading between the lines that you realize that they were doing pretty good stuff.
As a war rememberance this is not as important as say Ike's "Crusade in Europe." But it is a pretty good story of a young man. Highly Recommended.

Book Description
Throughout the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, France’s most consistent enemy on land was the Austrian Empire. Austria's huge armies played a central part in the several coalitions against France, from the 1790s, to the Austerlitz campaign of 1805, the closely-balanced battles of 1809, and the final upsurge of 1813-14. Contrary to the myth of rigid aristocratic conformity, the generals who led those armies were as diverse in origin and character as their regiments - some were princes of the blood, and some ex-rankers promoted for talent and courage. This text gives concise but fact-packed accounts of the careers of more than 30 of these men, illustrated with portraits and meticulous colour plates.

Book Description
On October 22, 2002, more than 125 of the world's finest photographers set out on a unique global mission. Their instructions were simple: look beyond the daily news headlines, dig beneath the breaking stories, and capture what life is like on an ordinary day for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces around the world.
For 24 consecutive hours, this prize-winning team of civilian and military photographers -- working with the cooperation and support of the Department of Defense -- chronicled daily life in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
The resulting book of photographs documents the lives of elite units and freshly minted recruits; of cadets, generals, fire-fighters, medics, and MPs; of soldiers at desolate outposts and on strategic bases. It illustrates life in the cockpit of a fighter, on a Trident submarine, in an underground missile silo, and at computer terminals in a war room. It shows personnel patrolling borders, jungles, mountains, and harbors; training for special operations; and fighting terrorism.
It is a timeless portrait -- in indelible images and eloquent words -- of the men and women who wear the uniforms of the American military. They are your sons, daughters, spouses, neighbors, and friends.
Together these photographs provide an inspiring visual reminder of the routine and heroic operations, the sacrifices and dedication, that are necessary to defend America's freedoms 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Customer Reviews:
"We do this because we believe in it. We don't need any other reward.".......2006-07-21
This is a magnificent and well deserved tribute to the men, women and families that have made the United States Armed Forces the greatest force for Peace and Freedom, not only for America, but also for the rest of the world who want to live in in peace and freedom as well as those throughout the world who have the same aspirations. They have had a long history of defeating evil organizations and countries that have attempting to dominate others by force. America has worked with others in defending against oppressors;but has often taken on the task virtually alone. This has never been more true than we see today in her endeavors with The War on Terror.
The only successful defense of Liberty and Freedom is the maintenance of a Military equipped with the best equipment, the most honorable intentions, and most of all the best personnel. Today,as America stands almost alone, free people everywhere, have to thank their lucky stars, that the Armed Forces of America exists. If you doubt this, just think of the mess the world would be in today,if what we see represented in this book ,were not existing, prticularly throughout the 20th Century as well as now as we move into the 21st.
So often the media concentrates too much on the negative and only reluctently even only covers the positive.
This book may at first only appear to be another military
coffee -table book. It is much more than that.It is an excellent portrayal of the people who give up all to serve their country.Thank God ,for these people of the past, those in uniform today and the need for their services in the future. The hope of future Peace and Freedom in the world without them is impossible to imagine.
We all owe them our thanks.
Beautiful tribute to the US Forces.......2006-03-29
As the wife of an active duty servicemember, I am so happy to see a book that shows the amount of work each and every soldier/sailor/airman/marine does on a day to day basis...and throughout all parts of the world. We have had the pleasure of living overseas during much of his time. We miss living in the US but we are proud to be over here while he serves his country.
--Vicki Landes, author of "Europe for the Senses - A Photographic Journal"
A Typical Day in the U.S. Military.......2004-05-26
Everyone has been talking about the United States military in the recent past, thanks to the ongoing war against Iraq. Photos are sent back from the Middle East showing the soldiers in their military garb with weapons in hand and we constantly hear about how the war is going. We expect this during times of war, but what takes place in a normal day when there is no war to fight? What do the military personnell do in a typical day?
These questions can be quickly answered by reading this book. It's mostly a collection of photographs, with only a minimal amount of wording. It starts out in the early morning hours, showing photos of military men and women eating breakfast and engaging in physical workouts, then proceeds throughout the day, ending with pictures of night time security workers checking highly sensitive places to make sure all is clear.
This book is 256 pages in length, but it includes mostly pictures, so it doesn't take very long to read. It is well- organized, too, with an introduction by Walter Cronkite and a world map on each page, indicating the area of the world where a particular picture was taken. And the photos, like I mentioned above, are organized in order of the time of day they were taken, allowing the reader to follow along from sunrise to sunset and gain a better understanding of what life is like in the military.
This coffee table- size book makes contains many great pictures, showing men and women at work and at play with their families and friends. It's a nice addition to any home library and it proves to be a good educational guide, letting readers see and understand exactly what takes place during a normal day for the United States military personnel.
Pictorial summary of our military.......2004-05-05
This book creates a snapshot of life in the U.S. military, by showing us a large collection of pictures from across the world, displaying what the U.S. military does in different places on a certain day. The pictures are high in quality, and the captions concise. This is a good book for people thinking of joining the military, or for those with a loved one already in the military.
The American Military Family passes in review.......2003-10-09
What a great theme to choose to revive the "A Day In the Life Of..." series! The predictably excellent photos (except for one field portrait where the camera's autofocus missed the subject) are a wonderful documentary of a single day in the globe-spanning mission of America's military.
Familiar images inevitably occur: Drill sergeants bawling out rattled recruits; wide-angle nose shots of fighter jets, flight deck sailors giving "launch" hand signals to carrier pilots; mud-slathered soldiers crawling through training courses, anonymity-suggesting group photos; and individual portraits showing the full range of humanity that calls America home.
There are also plenty of pleasing novelties, at least to me. A soldier in Hawaii snaps a salute while carrying a surfboard. Soldiers run station drills around a golf green, the only one on the one-hole course, in the Korean DMZ. A SEAL emerges, like Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, from the water. A seemingly prosaic picture of a cadet eating upon closer inspection reveals a meal of pancakes, cake, nachos, a pork chop, a hot dog, and other unharmonious victuals. Women and families are plentifully represented throughout.
We get representative shots of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield, a rear view of President Bush disembarking from Air Force One, a National Security Agency lab, and pictures of the troops in Afghanistan on the job. The closest thing to actual trouble that was going on on this day, that was allowed to be photographed, was a forensic investigator examining a Marine's sabotaged parachute. So, there are no pictures of military intelligence giving prisoners an interrogation, though there is a picture of Camp Gitmo.
This is a splendid album, technically and thematically, of America's best.

Book Description
River Channel Restoration summarises the current state of the art for river channel, floodplain and catchment restoration, and provides practical guiding principles for river managers. Fundamental principles are illustrated with case studies and experiences in a wide range of settings, principally Northern Europe and North America. An objective is to guide river managers away from trial and error approaches to appraisal and design. A multi-functional approach to restoration projects is needed, encompassing disciplines such as hydrology, hydraulics, geomorphology, water quality, ecology and landscape. Although concentrating on abiotic factors, this book will be of considerable interest to all disciplines with an interest in restoration. Contributors include university scientists, researchers, and practitioners from regulatory and consultancy organisations.
