Book Description

Letitia Baldrige is the woman best known as Jackie Kennedy's social secretary during the White House years. But in this fascinating memoir Baldrige reveals a career sparkling with a host of other achievements: embassy work in an era when women rarely were given jobs overseas, becoming the first female executive at Tiffany & Co., and founding one of the first companies run by a female CEO. In her amazing life story Baldrige shares her perspective as a White House insider: the hilarity of young Jackie's antics on foreign diplomatic visits, the terror of the Cuban missile crisis, and the heartbreak of President Kennedy's funeral. Stylish, chic and always polite, Baldrige reveals the determination that has made her a success and brought her the admiration of women around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Review of shipping: Beware of buying this book from Amazon...........2007-03-18

I placed my order for this book on Jan 28th, and it said it would be here around March 23 (which I thought was too long, but was willing to wait). Today I got an e-mail saying it would be further delayed and will not arrive until May 9th! This looks like a lovely book, but you're better off getting it at your local bookstore! :)

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure, and a Surprise.......2006-08-05

I've always enjoyed Ms. Baldridge's books, and this was no exception. I was expecting, knowing nothing about it beforehand, that it would be yet more nostalgia about the Kennedy White House. Thankfully, it wasn't. That period of her life occupied part of the book, but not even the major part. Actually, I enjoyed most the part about her time working for Tiffany & Co. It's great bedside reading.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific! .......2006-05-29

I had this on my shelf for several years before finally reading it--and now I regret waiting so long! This is a captivating story told by someone uniquely placed in several high-level positions: aid to David & Evangeline Bruce in France; aid to Clare Booth Luce and Henry Luce in Italy; and chief of staff to Jackie Kennedy. In addition to this, Ms. Baldrige was the first woman executive at Tiffany's, and held a high level position at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. But what really endears her to the reader is Ms. Baldrige's way of telling hilarious stories on herself--the things that go askew during a dinner party, for example. She took her work very seriously, but is modest enough to tell stories on herself that can make one dissolve in laughter. I came away from this book with a higher appreciation of all that she has done. She is very likeable!

Oh! how I wish I had a life like Tish Baldridge's! She is a gutsy and classy lady and I admire her for that. I loved to read that book because it goes to show that dreams come true when we put the energy and efforts for them to materialize.

    Book Description

This book, rich in anecdote and history, explores in words and pictures the world of uphill cycling. Recreational cyclists can ride the same roads, compare their own efforts with those of masters like Coppi and Merckx and Armstrong, and come away with an understanding of the heroic feats that made these greats so great. Dozens of photographs add to an engaging look at this amazing sport.

4 out of 5 stars Uphill Battle is worth it.......2007-06-15

A good review of cycling's great climbers, this book is a window into many of the great climbing by bike performances. As you read many of the heroic uphill battles that have taken place within cycling's major tours, Mulholland has you on the hill, feeling the rider's pain. Many of these accounts will be unknown to all but the most rapid cycling fan and deserve to be told. While only including major European climbing exploits, this account is a good addition to a cycling library. For a collection of American climbing exploits (along with the most difficult hillclimbs in the U.S. and other climbing information) see the book 'The Complete Guide to Climbing (By Bike)' from Extreme Press.

    4 out of 5 stars Against Gravity.......2004-08-15

Owen Mulholland is known as a writer of cycling history and "Uphill Battle"is a worthwhile addition to the specialized genre of books for bike nuts. While there has been a recent torrent of books on the Tour de France, this book also describes some interesting and exciting stages of the other great stage races, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta in Spain.

The book is arranged in chronological fashion as a series of brief biographies of climbing cyclists. The stories really begin in 1905 when mountains were introduced into the Tour de France for the first time. It is a never-ending amazement to me how incredibly difficult the early Tours were, with terrible roads, fixed gear bicycles and gargantuan stages. For example, the 1926 Tour, Mulholland informs us, was almost twice as long as the current version!

It is true that many of the stories have been repeated for decades-what fan of the Tour does not know of Eugene Christophe and the broken fork, or poor Rene Vietto turning around for his team leader, or Merckx's virtuosity in seemingly everything? But there are a lot of other good stories here about riders who had their moments of glory in the mountains and then, over time, slid out of sight. Some riders were not known for their climbing at all, including Rik van Looy, but still managed to go for the prize when it beckoned.

The chapter on Lance Armstrong is the longest single one in the book and is a good recapitulation of Big Tex's career to his fifth Tour de France victory in 2002. While Mulholland does not fawn over Armstrong, it is clear that Lance Armstrong is a rarity in pro cycling as a rider who is not only superb at time trialling but one of the very best at climbing as well.

The book could have used better editing in avoiding the occasional repetitions. As well, the Modern Era is represented by allrounders, such as Fignon, LeMond, Indurain and Roche instead of the pure climbers one would expect to see. That said, the chapters on the Columbian star Luis Herrera and the Basque Roberto Laiseka are illuminating, and the chapter on Marco Pantani captures the very ambivalent record of this Giro and Tour winner.

The book could have been improved with more on other races with difficult climbs but as it stands it is an entertaining and enjoyable account and worth recommending. There are some very good pictures, including a great one of Anquetil and Poulidor elbowing each other like sprinters as they climb the Puy-de-Dome in 1964. Bikes of steel, men of iron.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre stories, poorly told.......2004-03-01

This book reads more like a series of magazine articles than a coherent history.

Mulholland has some grammatical quirks - mostly his pronouns get out of whack - making me read many sentences several times to sort out who he's talking about. He is fixated on Franco and torture in Spain; this gets somewhat boring.

Other quirks that really made me want to put the book down even though I wanted to know the stories were his repeated parenthetical explanations of things like the fact that 'Giro d'Italia' is the Tour of Italy. If he thinks his readership don't already know this, he could explain it once and then leave it alone. Lavishes praise on Armstrong, bags out Pantani, and ignores Virenque.

Some good stories, but I found the grammatical and stylistic problems greatly distracting.

5 out of 5 stars Novice at Candlestick Charting.......2007-07-08

Great book, great content. You really need to absorb the direction of the method by reading this book 2 - 3 times. This isn't because of poor writing. This book is well written. It is due to the mindset required to fully understand the patterns for a novice like myself. I did find that it is one more tool to use to validate a trend or reversal. it has helped me with more than one profitable decision.

        5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2007-06-09

Morris' explanation of the candlestick system for analysis of stock price trends is very thorough and easy to understand. Remembering all of the patterns is a bit overwhelming, but you do begin to develop a sense of what the candlesticks are saying that eventually makes understanding the patterns easier.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic tool for learning to use Candlesticks.......2007-04-17

I am quite surprised at how useful the book is for my trading. I'm currently a day trader that trades momentum. I have been starting to use Candlesticks in the last year or two to try to enhance my entries and exits. My profitable trade percentages are increasing and my trade exit timeliness is getting better (thanks to candlesticks). The whole candlestick concept was hard for me to swallow but the more I got into it, I realized it was a visual pattern recognition concept. The book does a great job of explaining all of the useful candlestick formations as well as backing the explanations up with examples. I really liked the second half of the book that did a very thorough statistical analysis of the candlestick signals over multiple timeframes. I learned alot from the book and will add its extensive data into my stock trading techniques. Well done....

4 out of 5 stars Candlesticks Made Moderately Easy.......2004-01-13

Good book for someone who doesn't know anything about candlesticks, but I think you need to have some sort of understanding of investing before reading this book. The reason why I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 star was because this is the first book on candlestick I've read. I haven't read another book yet on this topic.

Read this book the first time when I bought it several months ago and got a glazed over look in my eyes because I had no clue about any of it. However, as I let some months pass by and got better with my technical analysis utilizing other charts like MACD, stochastics, MA, BOP, TSV, MS, etc....the terminology and how the market moves allowed me to better understand what I was reading in Morris' book.

It would've been nice if he had a simplified table of the various individual candlesticks and what they represented and another table of the reversal patterns in bull & bear markets.

I like how the chapters were formatted in the reversal chapter. This was a long chapter and probably could've been broken down into shorter chapters to better categorize various reversals.

I have been able to validate some of the reversals by experience. I wasn't sure if I was reading the candlesticks correctly and went against what I read. The candlesticks were correct and I was wrong. Good thing I am learning about this when I don't have lots of money to lose yet.

All in all, I will read this book to glean even more information from it. I've already read it twice.

        5 out of 5 stars ALL YOU`LL NEED.......2003-12-15

I have read some negative comments here about this book not being detailed enough etc... but it gives very clear, understandable explanations of all the patterns, and they are all grouped in an excellent orderly easy to find fashion. Other books of this kind may be a bit more detailed but they are a difficult dry read, far too lenthy and not as organized nor as well written. Greg morris delivers all the neccessary goods in this book.

        5 out of 5 stars WELL WRITTEN.......2003-12-08

This book is an excellent reference for all the candlestick patterns. I like the fact that it has a pattern breakdown for every formation and also data on how well the patterns perform as far as accuracy at the end of the book. The descriptions are clear, concise and very well organized with great illustrations and psychological explanations behind the candlestick moves. I found this book an easier more understandable read than nison`s books on candlesticks and for less than half the price. I keep this book close by whenever i need to review a certain pattern, its very easy to flip through and find any of the formations since they are all neatly grouped by category, which i like. I think its the best.

5 out of 5 stars at the price the best.......2002-08-16

A great question is which is better: Nison or Morris? Nison is for those who use indicators; Morris is the purist using only volume.
Reference book? Morris gives you the picture and the explanation in an easy format and an index to find it. He also breaks the candles into groups and types. This is the valuable part of the book.
Who is more in depth? Well that's a tie with Morris winning slightly on candles & losing if you want to view the whole Japanese charting world, Kagi, Renko, 3 line break. Nison gives other Japanese charting types weight in the book which is good if you have Metastock bad if you don't. Personally I like the other methods.
So why did I give Morris the nod? As a professional trader I can't really give away an edge except that Morris is more tuned towards stocks & gives hints that Nison did not.
Nison is also a boring writer, better lecturer. Morris is a better writer, teacher.
Remember Morris gives you everything and if that's not enough then you're not reading carefully; looking over these previous reviews makes me happy because they obviously missed Morris' hints and guides. I saw them and my trading improved & I had used Candles for a long time before getting to Morris ala Nison & began to think them worthless. Now I understand their role.

        Enough said.

1 out of 5 stars Right idea poorly executed.......2002-07-21

Mr. Morris did wonderful research on technical trading and clearly knows what the charts are about. Morris goes on to clearly discuss that the difference between using technical analysis and using it well is understanding the philosophy of the market, the specific pattern and the interpretation of that, not simply by saying yes this is a buy signal because of the specific pattern but rather because of the physicology behind it and feeling that went with it. He fails to execute what he claims he will do in his introduction. I would save your money and not waste trying to struggle to unearth whatever little advice Morris gives.

In True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa, disgraced New York Times writer Michael Finkel recounts the story of the murderer who assumed his identity and examines the reasons for his own fall from journalistic grace, in a memoir that is gripping, perceptive, and bizarre. In 2002, Finkel, a rising star at the Times, was fired for fabricating a character in a story about child laborers in Africa. Just as the story of his downfall was about to become public, he learned that a man named Christian Longo, arrested in Mexico for the murder of his wife and three small children in Oregon, had been living under an assumed identity: Michael Finkel of The New York Times. Sensing a story--and an opportunity for redemption--Finkel contacted Longo, initiating a relationship that would grow increasingly complex over the course of Longo's trial and conviction.

Finkel makes no excuses for his actions. Nor does he deny his own narcissism--a narcissism that allowed him to rationalize his own lies as surely as Longo rationalized his crimes. Ultimately, Finkel says, his year with Longo taught him "how a person's life could spiral completely out of control; how one could get lost in a haze of dishonesty; and how these things could have dire consequences." The lesson, Finkel need not add, applies as much to the disgraced writer as it does to the killer. --Erica C. Barnett

        Book Description

In the haunting tradition of Joe McGinniss's Fatal Vision and Mikal Gilmore's Shot in the Heart, True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa weaves a spellbinding tale of murder, love, and deceit with a deeply personal inquiry into the slippery nature of truth.

The story begins in February of 2002, when a reporter in Oregon contacts New York Times Magazine writer Michael Finkel with a startling piece of news. A young, highly intelligent man named Christian Longo, on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list for killing his entire family, has recently been captured in Mexico, where he'd taken on a new identity -- Michael Finkel of the New York Times.

The next day, on page A-3 of the Times, comes another bit of troubling news: a note, written by the paper's editors, explaining that Finkel has falsified parts of an investigative article and has been fired. This unlikely confluence sets the stage for a bizarre and intense relationship. After Longo's arrest, the only journalist the accused murderer will speak with is the real Michael Finkel. And as the months until Longo's trial tick away, the two men talk for dozens of hours on the telephone, meet in the jailhouse visiting room, and exchange nearly a thousand pages of handwritten letters.

With Longo insisting he can prove his innocence, Finkel strives to uncover what really happened to Longo's family, and his quest becomes less a reporting job than a psychological cat-and-mouse game -- sometimes redemptively honest, other times slyly manipulative. Finkel's pursuit pays off only at the end, when Longo, after a lifetime of deception, finally says what he wouldn't even admit in court -- the whole, true story. Or so it seems.

        4 out of 5 stars Compelling, compelling.......2007-03-18

Back in December 2001, a heinous act occured along the Oregon coast that would forever alter the lives of the people involved with it. Christian Longo, newly relocated to the area a few months back, savagely took the lives of the people closest to him, and then fled the country. The shock and horror of the crimes reverberated strongly through the community and the state. While in Mexico, Longo assumed the identity of disgraced NY Times reporter Michael Finkel. Thus, this unusual pairing of these two men was born, and the end result, this quite unusual recounting of the Longo murders in "True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa".

Michael Finkel was once top of his game, reporting on serious stories with serious implications. However, due to frabrications made in an "child slavery" story, he quickly fell from grace, retreating to his life in Montana. No sooner than that happened, his phone rang, and a reporter calling from the Oregonian fills him in on the Longo story. Having nothing better to do with his time, Finkel contacts the now-captured Longo, who responds, creating a very strange, symbiotic relationship during the time Longo was awaiting trial for the murders.

This whole book is quite amazing. From Finkel's complete, honest confession to his fabrications, to the letters that Longo writes to him, the story is quite the page turner. Finkel's writing style is uncluttered and easy to read. He builds his story well, from the introduction to the final, horrifying conclusion. Finkel's honesty is compelling; he cuts himself no slack for his fabrication. You must forgive him for his mistakes, and hopefully, he'll find himself back to writing.

This story is chilling, in so many aspects. Longo, a merciless killer, sits on Oregon's death row, living with his crimes. You wonder how he does, but after reading Finkel's book, which provides an unusual insight into the distorted mind of a killer, more light is shed on this subject. In short, it's a great read.

        1 out of 5 stars Self-Serving.......2006-11-10

This book is about a murderer's theft of the author's identity to help him escape police apprehension. The author makes much of this fact, seeing himself as a victim, but an account I read of the actual murders has no mention of the author, nor does it need any for the purpose of telling its story.

Nor is the author a very sympathetic character, having announced at the beginning of the book that he has been fired for fictionalizing a news story for the New York Times. (a practice becoming more and more popular, it seems)

My main complaint, however, is that the book is just not that interesting unless you're fascinated by the inner workings of a journalist's mind.

        2 out of 5 stars What's one man's demise is another's redemption...or is it?.......2006-06-02

Michael Finkel wrote this book in an effort to alter the popular opinion that he is a dishonest reporter who falsified his articles. He wrote with one objective in mind - to emerge as a talented author and honest human being. But was he able to do so? It's up to the readers to decide.

What's the book about? As it turned out, a serial murderer used Mr. Finkel's identity to hide from the law. Luckily, the FBI did their job and caught the man. And when Mr. Finkel found out that his identity has been compromised for nearly a month, he saw an opportunity to use the story as a stepping stone toward redemption, toward purification of his own public character.

The book is written well, but having read it, I wouldn't recommend it. For one thing, it does little to reveal something new about the character of the murderer. It simply affirms the man's deceitful nature. And I could care less about Finkel's correspondence with the murderer. There were times when I felt like I was reading a gnostic gospel- an account of lies between two corrupt men = the dishonest journalist and the two-faced murderer - what a pair.

If anyone is interested in the story, the Internet is a perfect source about Longo's biography. Use it, don't waste your time with the book.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly done, but unsettling.......2006-01-30

I found this fascinating. I stayed up until two o'clock in the morning to finish it. It is a true crime story written in a clear, elegant style. Every sentence is polished, and every sentence is planned and placed in exactly the right place. There is no obvious striving for effect, no lurid prose, no fancy writing. Michael Finkel employs what George Orwell once called the invisible style. The writing is so unobtrusive, so deliberate in not calling attention to itself that what the reader experiences is the story itself, pure and simple.

Or stories. The book is like a film or a commercial novel in that there is a main plot and a subplot. The main plot is the story of Christian Longo who murdered his wife and three children and then ran to Mexico where he pretended to be Michael Finkel, ace reporter for the New York Times. This was a startling coincidence because Finkel had just been fired from the Times for falsifying a story about cocoa plantation "slaves" in West Africa. He was disgraced and fallen from the pinnacle of journalistic prestige. That is the subplot. Both stories are interwoven together in a masterful way. And the sequence of events is presented in a dramatic--not a strictly chronological--way so that the tension is maintained and the reader is led to eagerly turn the pages.

The overall story began when Finkel found out about Chris Longo impersonating him. Struck with the coincidence, he felt compelled to know more about Longo and why the accused murderer took on his name. He contacted Longo and worked hard to establish rapport and a friendship. His motive was to get as much information from Longo as he could in order to write a book. The book would fuse the story of his disgrace with that of a man who had murdered his family. The thread that ties the stories together is not just the initial coincidence but an obsession with honesty that haunted both men and the obvious lack of honesty that they both practiced. Both Finkel and Longo strove again and again to come completely clean about what they had done and what they were doing while using each other under the guise of friendship. Longo used Finkel as somebody to talk to (he had been isolated from the other prisoners and had almost no contact with anyone other than his lawyers) and as a sounding board for his defensive strategy. Finkel used Longo as a source for a story that would restart his career. As Finkel makes vivid, both men were more than a little desperate.

At one point Finkel gives part of the voluminous correspondence he had with Longo to three shrinks. They conclude that Longo has a narcissistic personality. He may indeed be narcissistic, but more to the point, Longo is a psychopath. He has all the classic features: a charming personality; a behavioral record of lies and thefts and murders; a grotesque sense of ultimately caring about nobody but himself; and finally an ability to be completely without remorse and able to party after his crimes, as he did in Mexico.

Ironically, I think it is Finkel who has at least a touch of the narcissistic personality. We can see this in his tendency toward an exaggerated sense of his own importance, first in imagining that the world would be all that interested in his story (ah, but he made the world interested by his skillful writing) and in this from page 267 (he's talking to Longo's lawyers who want ideas for Longo's defense): He writes, "I felt, at that moment, as though Longo's life was in my hands--that if I said the right thing, he'd be spared the death penalty." We can also see this in the tremendous amount of energy Finkel put into researching and writing this book. He desperately wanted to regain his reputation and to be regarded again as a top flight journalist.

Both men are caught in a moral confusion about lies and honesty, Longo because he's a psychopath who doesn't understand how people can be so upset about lying since it would seen to be the natural thing to do if it might benefit you (sociopaths learn at an early age that they are supposed to be remorseful about lying, and that it's bad, but they never really appreciate why, and so they are fascinated with the dynamics); Finkel because as he freely admits has told many lies in his life including the lies that ended his career at the New York Times. Neither has apparently thought much about Emerson's "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Neither seems to understand that it is not so much the absolute consistency of what you say as it is your motive for what you say and especially how what you say affects others. That is what counts. Most people know this. Furthermore everybody lies at one time or another, but not when bearing witness and not when the lives of other people might be adversely affected.

I think what fascinated Finkel about Longo was that he could see in him a caricature of himself; and as long as he could imagine that Longo might not be guilty or as long as he didn't look too closely at the murders, that was tolerable. However after sitting through the trial and hearing Longo's grotesque self-serving lies about the murders and the horrific details, Finkel had to psychologically distance himself from his would-be, partial alter-ego. And rightly so since there is something terribly unsettling about their symbiotic relationship.

But in the final analysis I say good for Michael Finkel. This is an outstanding work, a fine addition to a genre I like to call "participatory journalism." What Finkel learned about himself from this chancy venture is possibly as important as what this book has done for his career and for his self-esteem.

        4 out of 5 stars True Story??.......2006-01-02

Never having heard before of either Chris Longo or Mike Finkel, I assumed that the title of this book was intentionally misleading. I was then fascinated by the story and the skill with which it is told (and, I thought, created from whole cloth). I concluded temporarily that the author has the most fertile imagination I'd ever encountered. Imagine my disappointment now that I've learned that what I thought was creative fiction is actually true!

            Book Description

'The work that gave me most pleasure last year was undoubtedly the on-going Conway's History of the Ship ... intoxicating' Jan Morris in The Independent The Age of the Galley charts the development from the earliest paleolithic craft to the classical tireme and its Roman and Byzantine successors. As a warship, the galley survived the coming of the three masted sailing ship, and later chapters are devoted to its mediaeval and Renaissance successors. An unprecedented line-up of over one hundred leading maritime historians and specialists from around the world has been assembled to ensure that the work is informative, authoritative and fully international in it outlook. Essays are also included on related but more general aspects and themes of the period under review such as material resources, battle tactics, shipbuilding, gunnery, exploration or technology.

            4 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information.......2001-02-28

The appearance of this book is deceptive. The full-color illustration on the oversized cover indicates a volume dedicated more to color plates than to substantive text. No impression could be further from the truth. THE AGE OF THE GALLEY is a well-organized series of chapters, each written by real experts in the field, such as trireme specialist John Coates and the brilliant John H. Pryor.

Because each chapter has a different author, the quality isn't uniform; I found the chapter on medieval naval architecture to be a little obscure.

Overall, however, this book is an excellent single-source collection for anyone interested in just how oared warships worked. Excellent line drawings and diagrams illustrate what the various vessels looked like and help explain the dynamics of rowing each type.

If you're looking for those color plates or stirring accounts of ancient naval battles, this book will be a disappointment. If you have a real interest in galley warfare and the capabilities of these vessels, THE AGE OF THE GALLEY is a must-have.

This book examines the impact of globalization upon Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It investigates changes in the structures and practices of federalism, in public policies and practices of governance and politics, and in economic livelihoods in all three nations. It also provides detailed comparisons of the effects of globalization on the political and economic lives of women in each country.

Jane Bayes et al have done it again with another fabulous foray into globalization. You can pretty much bet that any anthology edited with Jane Bayes is going to provide the reader w/ well-organized writing, coherent case studies, and useful theorizing for use in undergrad and graduate courses alike.

The book's overall theme is timely and the sections work well with another to paint a picture that examines neoliberalism and globalization critically. The books strength really is that it focuses on Canada, the US and Mexico and compares the marked ways that globalization and neoliberalism have influenced the lives of people living in North America.

More so, they examine globalization and its discontents for women. I found the Intro, Chapters 7 and 8 to be my favourites in terms of their real usefulness to me. However, overall the book is a strong addition to global analyses of power.

The majority of my students in "Globalization and Resistance" liked the book, as well.

              Book Description

Written from an agronomic rather than an engineering perspective, this introduction to soil and water conservation explores a full range of topics and environmental issues, including some ignored or overlooked in other books on the subject. Comprehensive, up-to-date, and accessible, it considers the hazards posed by erosion, sedimentation, and pollution, and describes the techniques needed to conserve soil and maintain environmental quality. Situations and examples are drawn from many places to represent a cross-section of the soils, climates and cultures of the world, as well as the full scope of agricultural, engineering, mining, and other uses of the land. The volume covers conserving soil and water, soil erosion and civilization, geologic erosion and sedimentation, water erosion and sedimentation, wind erosion and deposition, predicting soil loss, soil surveys as a basis for land use planning, cropping systems, tillage practices for conservation, conservation structures, vegetating drastically disturbed areas, pastureland, rangeland, and forestland management, water conservation, soil drainage, irrigation and reclamation, soil pollution, water quality and pollution, economics of soil and water conservation, soil and water conservation agencies in the United States, and soil and water conservation around the world. For professionals that deal with soil and water conservation.

From the author: Increased inputs of phosphorus (P) in agricultural runoff can accelerate freshwater eutrophication. This is of particular concern in areas of intensive crop and livestock farming, where soil P has increased to levels that are of environmental rather than agronomic concern. Thus, many states have been forced to consider the development of recommendations for manure applications based on the potential for P loss in runoff, thereby creating an urgent need to assess the validity of the use of soil test P as an indicator of P loss in runoff. Several field studies have shown the dissolved P (DR) concentration of runoff is related to soil test P ([r.sup.2] of 0.58-0.98) of surface soil (0 to 5 cm). These relationships can identify critical levels which can support a DP concentration of runoff. In this regard, critical soil test P levels established by several states, ranging from 75 to 200 mg [kg.sup.-1], appear to be realistic. However, amounts of P lost in runoff are not related solely to soil test P, due to variable site runoff and erosion potentials. Thus, an approach which integrates soil test P with estimates of potential runoff and erosion losses and local climatic, topographic, and agronomic factors is being developed for reliable, yet flexible recommendations of fertilizer and manure P management in environmentally sound production agriculture.

From the supplier: Researches conducted to elucidate the components that regulate surface run-off and the pesticides, sediment and nutrients that accompany this process have resulted in the creation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for minimization of run-offs. BMP was voluntarily included in the federal label directives for atrazine by DuPont and Novartis Crop Inc and was endorsed by the US EPA. Meanwhile, the results of studies on alternative BMPs have assisted the US EPA to determine which is best among the alternative methods.
