              Book Description

Pete Vordenberg is a favorite writer in XC ski magazines. This is his first book and it is already considered to be the best view of XC ski racing culture ever. It's a memoir of life as an Olympian as well as being a kid working toward such a goal. In this book he pulls out all the stops and opens up skiing to the whole of life in a way we haven't seen before. He puts us inside the global world of a life spent striving for near-impossible gold in XC. "It is not a retelling of the little engine that could, but why the little engine even tried."

Vordenberg is a 2-time Olympian, National Champion, and a current US Ski Team Coach. He recently "co-won" the 2003 USSA International Coach of the Year Award along with his head-coach. Not coincidently, the US is finally achieving its first worldclass results in decades!

              Includes dozens of black&white photos.

5 out of 5 stars DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ!.......2003-11-25

Just kidding, everything in this book is absolutely true. Read it here first. Thanks Pete for writing a great book, but more importantly thanks for telling the world about the time I wiped with poison oak! ouch.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read For Heading Into Winter.......2003-09-18

I thoroughly enjoyed Pete Vordenberg's story and can hardly wait for the snow to fly this winter. While I can say I'm especially motivated to get on the XC trails now, I can't say I'll be draggng a log behind me as part of my experience! What an incredibe story and entertaining read. I'm hoping to see a follow up book (non-fiction or fiction) from this talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars Covers Vordenberg's attitudes, aspirations, and motivations.......2003-09-14

Momentum: Chasing The Olympic Dream is the 191-page autobiography of two-time Olympian, National Champion, and current US Ski Team Coach Pete Vordenberg. A frequent and popular contributor to ski magazines, Vordenberg ably narrates his life in skiing from his youthful efforts to his adult accomplishments around the world. More than a simple chronicle of obstacles and accomplishments, Momentum: Chasing The Olympic Dream is an engaging read that covers Vordenberg's attitudes, aspirations, and motivations. Adeptly written with personal candor and a flair for narration, this engaging personal memoir is informative, entertaining, and occasionally inspiring. If you've ever strapped on a pair skis and dreamed of Olympic Gold, then you will want to read Pete Vordenberg's Momentum: Chasing The Olympic Dream!

5 out of 5 stars If Quixote tilted at Bigfoot.......2003-04-28

Admittedly I felt a little like Sancho Panza, because I didn't really anticipate reading "Momentum." Odds were that it prove to be just another insipid, quixotic memoir in the vast wasteland of sports literature. I was in for a surprise. In that ego-fueled and littered expanse "Momentum" shines like a rare and precious gem.

The body of the work is solid, and there are several scenes which are more than adequately--shall we say--"fleshed out." For example: the Halloween night revenge of the NMU xc ski team against a less than candid comedian-evangelist. Some guys are probably going to spend some time in purgatory for that caper, and I don't mean skiing in Colorado!

It is a very well written work. This book is autobiographical--Pete Vordenberg as he bled, sweat, toiled, cried and laughed trying to acquire Olympic fulfillment in a practically anonymous nordic odyssey. Nevertheless, if measured together with a Sasquatch or two, Pete's life would balance the scales of 10,000 ordinary men.

5 out of 5 stars Gliding through life..........2003-02-15

I dove into this story in the first few sentences, "Game on." in the back seat of a small car stuffed with skis, food, and loved ones. This writing is a total rush of heart and soul, as twisty, full of speed, and "unrelenting" as the courses Pete challenged himself on. There is no comparison to other athletes' books; each person's journey is unique. What sets this one apart is that the author is the athlete himself, and he reflects his physical grace and power as a champion nordic athlete in his intellectual grace and power as a writer and story teller. I loved his unique way of telling his story, like a meandering trail in all seasons, evolving and alive, and still living and breathing in glorious color. I felt a sense that the past is always alive as a part of here-and-now. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us, Pete, and hope it keeps on growing for you and others you continue to inspire.
Thanks to Jeff Potter for his vision and creativity, and a very meaningful gift of heart.

                  Book Description

Chronologically following Nicholas Tawa's The Coming of Age of American Art Music, this new study stands on its own in examining the music of the most prominent American composers active in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Among them are Edgar Stillman Kelley, Frederick Shepherd Converse, Daniel Gregory Mason, Edgar Burlingame Hill, Mabel Daniels, Henry Hadley, Deems Taylor, Charles Wakefield Cadman, Henry Gilbert, Arthur Farwell, John Powell, Arthur Shepherd, Scott Joplin, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Marion Bauer, and John Alden Carpenter. Unjustly neglected by a later generation of critics interested in the avant-garde, this music deserves a hearing today and, in fact, increasingly is the subject of new recordings. Professor Tawa puts his exemplary research and analytical skills to work to determine what these composers accomplished, not what latter-day critics felt they should have accomplished. The attitudes, styles, and compositions are analyzed in cultural context. The period of 1900-1930 witnessed an intense debate on what constituted an American identity in music. Was it Anglo-Celtic, Amerindian, African-American, jazz, or the individual unconsciously expressing the American society he or she lived in? The changing world of music, the clash of beliefs and values, and the attempts at a musical reconciliation between old and new approaches to composition figure prominently in the discussion. Tawa concludes that if the present-day listener does not reject romantic music out of hand, he or she will find delight in much of this large body of skillful, meaningful compositions.

                        Book Description

Franchise Bible is equally useful for the prospective franchisee or franchisor. This complete and practical guide, including sample documents and checklists, explains in detail what the franchise system entails and the precise benefits it offers. The book will familiarize you with the terms and conditions of a franchise agreement which both franchisees and franchisors should be aware of, and what information you must provide if you are to be a franchisor.
                        Franchise Bible helps you:
                        * Determine whether you would make a suitable franchisor or franchisee.
                        * Decide if your best course of action is to buy a franchise or start your own (unfranchised) business.
                        * Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the franchise marketing system.
                        * Familiarize yourself with the offering circular and what items it should contain.
                        * Consider expanding your current business by franchising.

This book will save you from making costly errors by explaining in detail what a franchisee should expect from a franchisor in the way of services and support, and what the franchisor's contractual obligations are to the franchisee. The book will familiarize you with the franchise process, saving you money on attorney and consulting fees, since you will be able to do much of the preliminary research yourself. In addition, the book provides checklists and forms to help the prospective franchisee rate a potential franchisor. Franchise Bible encourages the potential franchisor or franchisee to carefully consider whether he or she is personally suited to this unique and challenging way of doing business.

Effective January 1, 1995, the Federal Trade Commission implemented the new Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC), effective in all 50 states. 4 out of 5 stars Good overview for both sides of the franchise equation.......2004-02-15

This is a good book if you want to learn more about franchising in general. It has a lot of great information in it. It is a little bit of a "dry read" compared to other books on the topic I have read.

It's strength and weakness is in that it provides highlights for both franchisee or franchisor but does not go into great detail for either. If anything it has a slant towards those wishing to franchise and existing business. If you are looking for a book that is in depth from either perspective I would not start with this one.

This is the publication you should read if you are interested either working for another business, starting your own or starting a franchise. Either way, you should learn how the franchising concept works. As a researcher of McDonalds, I totally believe this is the idea whose time has come. Franchising will definitely be the wave of the future from time to come. Read this book as a student of mind control and recovery - you will not be sorry.

A very thorough overview of what you need to know to start and run a small business. I see other posters suggest that the program is overly general. Not my impression at all. Nine CDs here and no filler.

I found this book to be well written and informative. The author is specific about everything he discusses. He goes into detail in each chapter. There isn't too much he leaves out. Well worth your money.

This might make a good book for your teenage kid trying to learn about small business but other than that I dont think it would be helpful. If you really want the details of how to create and grow a real business (especialy high tech) and get funded, you should read "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" (Stathis). It makes this book looks like preschool.

                            5 out of 5 stars A very good read.......2005-12-03

This is a great book. Danielle Steel is not just some rich arthur in her mansion in San Francisco. She is a compasionate person who actually feels and gets involved with the less fortunate. I didn't feel that this book was slanted either way. I think it is a fair portrait of one's life. Definitely an intestersting read.

Sorry, but I can't rate this book fairly as I still don't have it. It's been almost 5 weeks since I ordered it, and I'm still waiting. Several complaints, and I got a 5 dollar discount on my next order. Why would I order anything else when I have to wait so long to get what I was promised in 2 weeks? Next time I will buy at the local book store. Yes, I will pay more but at least I will have the opportunity to read it before I die of old age.

5 out of 5 stars Fans, please chill out!.......2004-01-24

I have to say it: I am not a Danielle Steel fan in the strict sense of the word. I find her prose repetitive, her dénouements fairly sugarcoated and her writing rather low-brow in general, especially for a writer who scoffs at the romance writer definition and would like to be compared with Judith Krantz or Sidney Sheldon. And yet, there is something about her books that keeps me coming back for more. I especially enjoy her period works, like "Vanished," "Zoya," or "Crossings" and I have to say she has a knack at making a good portrayal of the times in which her books are set. The plots are intricate enough and one can almost invariably bond and relate to her characters without difficulty. As to this unauthorized biography, "The Lives of Danielle Steel," it has helped me understand more about the persona who is behind the fiction. The research on the author's life is very thorough and it also makes some good points about her fiction. This book doesn't intend to tarnish Danielle Steel's image, all the opposite: it helps her fans discover her as a human being. It's true that it gouges up a lot of rubbish about her past but in the end it was she who took the decision to marry ex-cons and drug-addicts. We all make mistakes and have to live them down as best we can. I found the book as entertaining as any of Steel's books and, as I have already said, it helped me relate better to Danielle Steel now that I know that she's human.

5 out of 5 stars Others Missing the Point.......2001-12-11

All of these negative reviewers are missing the point. This book was written to show the interesting parallels between Danielle Steels life and the characters in her book. The book doesn't go out of its way to say that Danielle is a bad person - it's just saying, "look, her books are a lot like her life." You people should just relax and enjoy the parallels between life and fiction. This is a great book, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I'm also a Danielle Steel fan - I've read all of her books - and I now look back at them with a different eye, which is fun!

                            1 out of 5 stars Complete Junk!!!.......2001-05-25

I have been reading Danielle Steel novels for several years, including the book she wrote about her son's life, and this overdrawn gossip column, The Lives of Danielle Steel, is complete junk. I wouldn't be shocked at all if the authors of this book never even read a Danielle Steel novel, which I consider "real" fiction. If you are a true fan of Danielle Steel don't even bother to read this book because it tells nothing about the author's real life.

                                      Book Description

The mounted, armoured knight is one of the most potent symbols of medieval civilisation; indeed, for much of the middle ages the armoured warhorse was what defined a man as a member of the military class. However, despite the status of the knightly warrior in medieval society, the military service of the later medieval English aristocracy remains an unaccountably neglected subject, and the warhorse itself has never attracted a major study based upon archival sources. This book seeks to open up new fields of research: it focuses on the horse inventories, documents which offer detailed lists of men-at-arms and their appraised warhorses, the valuation of which is a measure of its owner's social and military status. Dr Ayton is primarily concerned with the inventories and related records for Edward III's reign, a period which witnessed significant changes in the organisation of the English fighting machine. The documents produced during this period of `military revolution' cast valuable light on the character and attitudes of the aristocratic military community at a time when its traditional role was in the course of re-evaluation.Dr ANDREW AYTON is senior lecturer in history at the University of Hull.

To many, India invokes crowded Bombay bazaars and cramped Calcutta quarters more than bucolic vistas. With a population surpassing 850,000,000, India's humanity predominates, but it's nonetheless true that India possesses a remarkable natural wealth and scope. From the Himalayas to the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Karakoram Range in Ladakh to the swamps of Assam, the enormous variety of climate and terrain supports a vast diversity of vegetation and wildlife, with one-horned rhinoceros and lion-tailed macaques, Kashmir stags and Asiatic lions prowling the preserves. Traversing the continent, Gerald Cubitt photographed the craggy, snow-capped mountains, the lush vegetation, and the wildlife that lives there, and Guy Mountfort provided the text. The pictures are astoundingly beautiful and varied. A fragile, pink, newly hatched robin accentor opens its mouth for food, 5,100 meters up in Ladakh. A mass of purple Impatiens sulcata bloom in the Valley of Flowers in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttar Pradesh. Pristine snow gleams on the slopes of Mount Annapurna in the late afternoon sun. And the red panda from the temperate forests of Sikkim looks softly, fox-like, from its tree. There are pictures of the handsome leopard cat (hunted for its fur despite its protected status) and the clouded leopard (baring its unusually long canines), as well as hoolock gibbons swinging on vines, a Buffalo cow guarding twin calves among burned elephant grass, and a Pallas's fishing eagle high up in Kaziranga National Park. If you weren't an avid naturalist before you start flipping through this glossy archive of Indian wildlife, you will be soon. It's hard to see all that beauty without planning your own safari to one or more of India's many national parks and sanctuaries.

                                            Book Description

Published in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature, Wild India is a valuable current record of the subcontinent's wild places and wilderness areas. Guy Mountfort, an authority on all aspects of species preservation, provides a discerning account of the ecological and human history of the region, focusing on present-day pressures on India's irreplaceable natural heritage. Gerald Cubitt's superb 400 full-color photographs are informatively captioned and divided into sections on the Himalayas, the Indo-Gangetic Plain, and the Deccan.

Wild India surveys the great diversity of plant and animal life from the remote Karakoram range in Ladakh to the rainforests of the southwestern ghats, from the deserts of the far west of Rajasthan to the jungles and swamps of Assam and Manipur. Here, among numerous other species, are the magnificent Kashmir stag and the shy musk deer, the rare lion-tailed macaque and the Nilgiri tahr, and the Asiatic lion -- in its last bastion in the Gir forest -- along with the golden langur, the one-horned rhinoceros, and herds of elephant and buffalo.

Guy Mountfort has helped to create national parks and wildlife reserves in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. As a founder of the World Wide Fund for Nature, he led the international campaign to save the tiger from extinction. Gerald Cubitt, one of the world's leading natural history photographers, has provided all of the photographs for Wild India, as he did for the companion volume, Wild Malaysia.
