Book Description
Readings in Medieval Civilizations and Cultures II
Among the readings included are several existing letters by Emma (Einhard's wife), The Life of Charlemagne, and The History of His Relics. The latter work transports us into an almost unknown world as Einhard, the cool rationalist, arranges for a relic salesman, a veritable bone seller, to acquire saints' relics from Italy for installation into his new church. The reader is taken on an intrigue-filled trip to Rome, where Einhard's men creep into churches at night to steal bones and then spirit them away to Einhard in the north. The relics are received in town after town as if they were the living saints come to cure the infirm. Einhard's descriptions of the sick, the lame, and the blind of northern Europe vividly expose us to a side of medieval life too rarely encountered in other medieval sources.

Charlemagne's Courtier: The Complete Einhard.......2000-04-07
This wonderful volume provides a holistic collection of Einhard's writing with a detailed and indepth introduction. Dutton provides a solid historical background for Einhard and the society he lived in. Einhard's works offer a wonderful view of life in the middle ages. His biography of Charlemagne is stylized, yet demonstrates the concerns of state, the expectation of an emperor's subjects, and the role of the courtier in Carolingian Gaul. Einhard second major work, a treatise on the holy martyrs, brings the faith and practice of medieval Christianity to life. All of the works are tied together by Einhard's touching letters. These letters bring the man's character to life. They demonstrate not only the responsibilities of a courtier, land owner, and abbot, but also his love for his family, his faith and the religious crisis he experienced when the two clashed. Every student of medieval history will benifit from reading this book.

Book Description
The Politics of Pictures searches for the public in the realm of media, where citizens are now literally represented on screen and page. John Hartley investigates popular media reality, showing how pictures and texts are powerful political forces in their own right. He embarks on a wide-ranging and sometimes bizarre journey of discovery, using an amazing variety of primary texts to explore the way publics have been created, and the political uses of media audiences.
The Politics of Pictures is a history of looking, from Aristotle to TV audiences, from the invention of photography to the meaning of picnics, from Leviathan to synchronized swimming, Dr. Johnson to the sexualization of war. Its unconventional approach is designed to show how popular reality looks to itself, and how its peculiar forms and connections actually challenge some venerable political and philosophical truths.

Some hard some simple.......2007-01-06
Some of the puzzles are really great brainteasers a few of them are pretty simple....
The value of logic, or the illogic of value?.......2005-08-31
This book, by a well-known poser of puzzles, sets out of the order of a thousand logic puzzles in a format loosely styled upon the presentation of Scheherazade, but in a somewhat less entrancing way. The problem with logic is that there is just so much of it about. Perhaps the axiom 'less is more' might have been applied and some judicious excision of the more mechanical or repetitious examples been performed. The jewels are lost amongst the glass beads. Obviously by its nature mathematical logic eschews value judgements, but in the present case this seems to have been taken rather too literally.
Good book---too much algebra.......2004-09-01
This book is a good source of riddles, old and new. Unfortunately, a lot of the riddles are just basic algebra problems... and that's not very fun. But if you skip (or quickly work out) the silly algebra riddles, there are still a lot of other interesting riddles. And also there's a neat way to prove Gauss's summing rule in this book.
Also, I was looking for an errata for this book, but I couldn't find one, so I will just mention here that the answer to number 71 is incorrect. But, if you just remove the last sentence from the answer, then it is right.
Better than Sam Loyd!.......2004-07-27
This is probably the best book on logic puzzles ever written (aside from other Smullyan books, that is). It is witty, challenging, and has problems of all kinds. The first half is framed as a continuation to the Arabian Nights, with ingenious and original puzzles (aside from the occasional oldy snuck in) given an Arabian touch.
However, after those brilliant puzzles comes the greatest part of the book. The second half is a collection of puzzles, paradoxes, and even has a couple of chapters on coercive logic, invented by Raymond Smullyan himself.
I reccomend this book to any logic buff, or indeed to anyone who's ever enjoyed a logic puzzle. And if you don't fall into either category, then you need this book all the more.
The only logic book you'll ever need.......2001-02-02
Seeing my frustration at being thoroughly unchallenged in logic in my math class at school, my mom bought me this book. I owe her one. There are coercive logic puzzles, easy but sneaky riddles, and math games. There are liar/truthteller problems to keep you guessing for hours. That said, this is also a great book to read on a plane. It is so complete, you will never need another brainteaser book. That is, until you memorize all the questions.
Book Description
Another monster collection for monster puzzlers!
Hard on the heels of its bestselling sister volume, The Amazing 1,000 Puzzle Challenge, this visually stunning full-color feast of 1,000 puzzles and games will keep puzzlers, their family and friends amused, intrigued and perplexed for many months. Some of the finest puzzle-designers in the world have contributed to this book, making it a simultaneously fascinating and frustrating mental challenge.
The Amazing 1000 Puzzle Challenge 2 contains just about every imaginable type of printable puzzle. From number puzzles to visual-spatial posers, crosswords to lateral thinking puzzles, word games to mazes, this massive collection of brainteasers is guaranteed to banish boredom.
Like its highly successful forerunner, this puzzle book is unusual in that all of the puzzles are in full color. This immediately gives the puzzle-designer a whole new world of opportunity in terms of laying red herrings and displaying black humor, anything to leave puzzlers in a purple haze....
But puzzlers need not fear. If a puzzle proves to be just too tricky, too fiendish or simply incomprehensible, then the answer section at the back of the book will explain everything, giving not just the answer but also, where necessary, the logic behind the answer.

To Mock a Mockingbird.......2004-06-22
After a disconnected array of logic puzzles at the beginning, the author embarks on an introductory course to combinatory logic. Given a little application (if you're like me you will need a pen and paper), you can get to grips with some of the fundamentals of mathematical logic with relatively little background. This is pretty astonishing.
The worst feature of the book is the fact that only one (unintuitive) model for the theory is provided. Discussion of the significance of the results obtained is not particularly useful - probably anyone smart enough to solve the puzzles will not find anything there that they couldn't figure out for themselves.
But nevermind: if you want a good introductory course in combinatory logic (or you want to understand (a version of) Godel's 1st incompleteness theorem), then I would recommend this book for you!
Sweet and Simple introduction to functional programming........2004-05-31
This book by Smullyan is different from his other puzzle books,
in that it is fully about puzzles from functional programming.
The birds are functors that compute on strings.
Self reference comes into play when the Mockingbird
shows you what a fixpoint computation is.
The phethora of birds may confuse you if you try to read it
fast or skip solving the puzzles. The problems are not
easy, it took the mighty mathematical titans - Turing and Godel
to provide the initial solutions. If you are stuck,
Smullyan provides all the solutions at the chapter end.
It requires concentration and remembering previous tricks,
something akin to solving Rubik's cube without a solution guide.
You will love it if you love chess problems.
In the end you will come out with a deep sense of
accomplishment having understood the proof of Godel's
incompleteness theorems, Combinatorial Logic, and Functional
programming, when all you thought you were doing was figuring
out puzzles of birds.
Hard to find book, but its worth its weight in gold.
The other book to complement this is "Forever Undecided,
a puzzle guide to Godel" by Smullyan, it uses Modal logic
puzzles to motivate you, but the end result is the same.
Remember Smullyan is Professor of mathematics and logic,
he is classy and witty like Knuth. Don't confuse him
with the popular mathematical journalists.
- Mosh http://www.cs.albany.edu/~mosh
An awesome book.......2002-03-20
A reviewer of one of Smullyan's other works called him "a national treasure" and I have to agree. To Mock a Mockingbird is a fantastic book -- whether you're looking for fun logic puzzles or a lighter look at formal logic theory. This book is better than any college textbook, and right up there with any of Martin Gardner's best works. Highly recommended.
The best introduction to combinatory logic I can think of........1998-03-25
Various sets of increasingly sophisticated puzzles & scenarios in a combinatory forest where all the birds are combinators. Great way to understand interesting results from combinatory logic without cumbersome definitions. Mockingbirds are M, which is also YI, Curry bird's response to Identity bird... hilarious.

Introductory, yet useful.......2007-07-05
One imortant thing to keep in mind is that this book was written over 10 years ago, so many of the current inustry issues and trends won't be addressed.
This book is useful for the complete layperson who somehow finds him/herself sitting on a bank board, which would be somewhat unusual. However, the appendices have solid information related to problem loans, and give sample lending policies. Also, the bank described well the interaction of the various parties at a bank; the auditors, examiners, etc.
Insightful review - by Jameson Thottam.......2005-09-12
I purchased this book as a good primer for entering banking (specifically IndyMac Bank). When I joined retail banking (previously only having worked in Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley) I was able to expand my knowledge on various areas of the retail banking beyond just what I-Banking had taught (e.g.,, valuation, SEC II & SEC III stat techniques, tax implications and flippying and insider trading tips of how to find/negotiate the best properties).
I would highly recommend this book to others in this field.
- Jameson Thottam
Excellent guide to understanding the basics of the industry.......1997-10-19
One of the best summaries of the main marketing and economic forces shaping banks: how banks can find competitive advantage, price products, measure their performance, segment their markets, create barriers to imitation, manage risk. For NON-banking professionals (lawyers, consultants, PR execs, etc.) who need a quick intro to the banking profession.

Customer Reviews:
Very interesting read.......2007-02-04
As someone who lives in Sumter, SC I've heard a good bit about Pee Wee Gaskins. He actually used to live in a house right down the street from where I sit now. In any case, I have talked with people who are friends and who actually knew Pee Wee back when he hung around places like The Neck, (which by the way was 100% described accurately in the book..... it was a ROUGH place where the cops would NOT venture into) and they described him as a 'nice guy' but one that you would definitely not want to cross. He was known for a hot temper and my friend said that there were bodies that people would never find left from Pee Wee (I trust my friend on this one.... he was involved in a lot of things back then before he got his act together.)
If you are reading this for a glimpse into a serial killer's mind then this is an excellent book. There were parts that made me cringe, especially since my best friends can remember some of the incidents (missing persons) when they took place (I was too young then). It adds a frightening touch to think that I drive by places everyday where it is rumored that he had buried bodies.
For those who have 'researched' and hold the belief that Pee Wee lied about all of this and was only seeking to be more 'famous', I'd like to remind everyone that the deal was made with the author that this book would NOT come out until after his execution and that he received NO funds whatsoever (nor did his family) for releasing this book. I feel that if he only did it for 'attention' that he would have wanted it released before he died. And after talking to people whom I trust who could tell me about his personality and demeanor, I firmly believe that 90% of the book at least is true (everyone embellishes after all... so I'll leave 10% for that).
All in all, a GREAT but sad look into the life and mind of this murderer.
A few things unanswered.................2006-05-31
I first heard the name "Pee Wee Gaskins" in 1994. My new boss and I were traveling through the upstate part of SC to pick up a company car. We were discussings things unrelated to work and getting to know each other. When he asked if I enjoyed reading, I told him I enjoyed reading books about true crime, serial killers in particular. At that time, he told me I should get the book "Final Truth". I did.
After reading the book (which I found somewhat disturbing because of the details yet refreshing for the truths told about the corruption in the "justice system") I began traveling extensively through rural SC for work. After visiting that particular part of the state, I found it quite believable that Gaskins could have commited all the murders stated in Final Truth. There are rural parts of the state where there isn't so much as a house or gas staion for literally miles.
Not having actually known anyone who knew Gaskins, I took this book at face value. While it may be true that Gaskins wanted "notoriety" like Bundy or Dahmer, I actually got from the book he was telling the truth.
There are a few questions I have always wanted to ask ANYONE who knew Gaskins. I have actually talked with people from Sumter, Florence and that area in general but only people who "knew of" Gaskins and his crimes.
Did the police ever search the areas where he claimed to have buried his "coastal killing" victims?
Has anyone ever seen any of the "artwork" that he supposedly taced, signed and sold from death row?
Gaskins spoke of a "writer" that wrote a book (I'm assuming) about him which was filled with lies about his wives and children. Does anyone know what he is talikng about? The only other book I can think of that Gaskins was referring to was titled "Slaughter in Carolina". I have not read this book but am looking for it. He calims in Final Truth this libelous book or story was written by a woman and a woman wrote "Slaughter In Carolina" (I finally found this book and have written a review of it as well as scanned an image)
I never got from the book that Gaskins was an abused by his mother. In fact, he claims the only abuse at home was from his step father and that was just an occasional slapping (no type of sexual rape is discussed in the book at the hands of his step father). I believe the gang rapes discussed by Gaskins at reform school and prison are probably accurate.
If anyone would like to discuss this, please email me at pumpkins2002@comcast.net
Final Truth or Final attempt to "Become Famous?".......2005-10-23
This book is a good read ( i finished it in a day ) but i just have some trouble beliving some of Pee Wee's stories - he even states himself that he has told several versions of the stories -so why should i believe without doubt that this book is "the truth"? ... from reading profiling books on serial killers - you find that these killers may change up the way they kill / despose of their bodies - to make an improvement - but gaskins has 2 ways of killing people and he bounces back and forth between them -- doesn't make much sense ...
at the end of his book he lets the readers know that he wanted to become famous - but, he and his crimes really aren't known outside of the southeast ... i'm not saying he didn't kill a lot of people, i'm not saying he didn't torture them ... i'm just having a little trouble beliving mr gaskins versions, i just get the feeling that he is admiting to more, for one last attempt to in his words "be famous" ... he even mentions that back when hurricane hugo hit the grand strand, that there were reports of bodies (remains) being found, but it was reported that those were from graveyards .... i believe that to be true because, gaskins said that he "sank" his victims, with big chains, etc., and sank their belongings, he also says that when he felt he was about to be caught he took all of the tools he used for his killings and all the chains he had left and sank that to the bottom of the marshlands in horry and georgetown counties ... when hugo came through -- this is a definate time that things would have been brought up from their watery grave ... but no reoprts of the 30 plus chains, and other tools have been documented
The gospel of victimology.......2005-09-20
This autobiography by serial killer Pee Wee Gaskins is brought to you by the apparently easily-duped co-author, journalist Wilton Earle. Gaskins' justifications and distortions are passed along with little examination or challenge, and probably bear small resemblance to the facts.
Final Truth is Mostly Lies.......2005-08-23
I've studied Pee Wee Gaskins extensively and interviewed his family, former teachers, neighbors, law enforcement, prosecutors, etc. Pee Wee was never beaten and abused as a child -- quite the opposite. As a handsome and intelligent little boy, he was the darling of his family and was pampered. His family members were hardworking, decent, church-going people, who were as shocked as everyone when it became clear that he was a psychopath -- killing birds and frogs at the age of 5.
He was an incredible liar and used this autobiography to enhance his legend in the Florence County area of South Carolina. When one tries to verify the details in the Final Truth, starting with basics like his mother's age when he was born, one realizes how fictional most of Gaskins' account is.
The story of Pee Wee is fascinating, but you won't learn it from this book.

Outstanding Reference Work and a Great Read to Boot!.......2003-05-20
Nafziger's German Order Of Battle is one of those books that take years to compile, organize, and then get published. The wait has been worth it. This volume includes a listing/ organization of every Waffen SS, Luftwaffe, and naval outfit, and foreign units serving Hitler. The descriptions of the different ethic groups that fought for German are well written, insightful, and fascinating. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Comprehensive, detailed, authoritative, and informative.......2001-06-09
George F. Nafziger's The German Order Of Battle: Waffen SS And Other Units In World War II covers the organization of all Waffen SS, Luftwaffe, and naval unites, as well as foreign units in German service, including Russian, Italian and central European troops. Appendices demonstrate the theoretical organization of many of these German military formations and is based on German military documents, exhaustive and meticulous research, and considerable scholarship. The third volume of an outstanding trilogy, The German Order Of Battle: Waffen SS And Other Units In World War II is comprehensive, detailed, authoritative, informative, and a core title for any personal, academic, or community library World War II reference collection.
Book Description
With the scandal over prison abuse at Abu Ghraib and the legal controversy over the enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay, the proper treatment of prisoners of war has once again been thrust into the news. At the heart of this debate stands the Geneva Conventions, a famous set of rules about which most of us know nothing. In The Rules of War, Derek Jinks--a leading authority on humanitarian law--provides an illuminating account of the Geneva Conventions, revealing when they apply, who they protect, what type of treatment they require, how they should be enforced, and much more. We learn that the Conventions--which were drafted in 1949--apply to all armed conflict, from declared war, to civil war, to armed hostilities short of war. In fact, the Conventions are relevant to a remarkable range of issues, from the trial of Slobodan Milosevic to the ongoing criminal proceedings regarding Rwanda and Sierra Leone. We discover that the Conventions protect a wide range of combatants, from "special ops" forces, to private military contractors, and even to terrorists. There are POW Conventions, but also Civilian Conventions that protects all nationals who have fallen into the hands of the enemy, including "unlawful combatants" such as the Guantanamo detainees. And we see what the Conventions require, from humane treatment, to contact with agencies such as the Red Cross, to release and repatriation at the end of the conflict. This is the only guide for general readers to the Geneva Conventions, rules which will play a key role in hot-button issues from the imminent trial of Saddam Hussein to the treatment of captured terrorists.
