Charles the Bold (1467-1477) was the last of the great Dukes of Burgundy. This historical and biographical work assesses his personality and his role as a ruler, and discusses his relationship with his subjects and his neighbours. It describes and analyses his policies, giving particular attention to his imperial plans and projects and his clash with the Swiss. The armies, the court and Burgundian clients and partisans are given separate treatment.

Vaughan's series of books on Valois Burgundy have long been a staple for anyone interested Burgundian history and culture. After a long stretch of being out of print, and very difficult to find, these new editions are sure to be welcomed by many historians. Added to Vaughan's work is a fantastic new introduction written for the 2002 edition by Malcolm Vale (another historian I would readily recommend).
While these works may be older, and more recent work has been done on Burgundy, Vaughan's scholarship is still first-rate. A must for the bookshelf of anyone interested in Valois Burgundy, or Northern Europe in the late 14th and 15th centuries.

You here so much about sports legends sometimes you get tired of reading about them...A friend of mine told me this book by Dan Wheeler of QVC was really different...it captured these stars in a real human perspective and suprisingy made them feel more like real people to me than the Icons or Idols the media attempts to build themup to be.....I could not get over the story of Mickey Mantle...One minute I was laughing hysterically....The next I was brought to tears....Very Sad...But it appears The Mick really died in peace! No Doubt, Wheeler knew thse guys like none other in the media....it resonates throughout the book that his relationships were very close with even the great Dimaggio.....I was not a real olympics fan..so I would say that was the only chapter I was not that interested in...But all in all...The best Sport book I ever read! As a non-avid sports fan, I enjoyed this book very much. The author did a fine job of relating the personal stories of the names behind the biggest legends of sports. Many people idolize these athletes without realizing that they are simply human beings like the rest of us. I thought the author did a nice job of weaving in stories about his childhood. Readers will also find Wheeler's duties as a QVC show host interesting. I would strongly recommend this book to everyone. It would also make a great gift for a young, aspiring athlete.

I gave this as a gift to someone who likes to read about the movies as much as he enjoys watching them. Because he has a collection of movie guides, this one caught my eye because it was different with a more unique take on film.

I have purchased other movie guides in the past but always end up getting the current Videohound. It's more concise than other books. Lots more information available. I love the catagory lists. Some of the catagory titles they think up are great! I would recommend this book for video lovers over any other that I've purchased.

i consider myself a movie buff, and this is my bible. this is the fourth edition of this book that i bought, and i will continue to buy one every year. it helps me to choose the movies i watch, and answers the questions that plague me. with the many options for reference (title, category, actor, director, composer, awards), i find this book very easy to use. not only does this book list actors, awards, directors, etc. a description of the film and a rating are included. i freaking love this book! 'nuff said.

The only short side is that it only produces info for on tape or DVD. Other than that it is a gem. When ever you don't remember an actors name, find the movie or the movie you remember them in and your there.
The bones critic of the film (ergo hound) is very good, a real persons review of the film.
Look for info by genre, title, actor or whatever.
This is a film buffs must and a great conversation starter!

What was Bogart's final film? What was Lizabeth Scott's first film? How many movies did Gregory Peck make? How many movies did Raoul Walsh direct? When did John Wayne die? And what was Vincente Minnelli's final film? Answers below! All this and considerably more movie information is included in the veritable encyclopedia "Golden Movie Retriever". There are fully 929 pages of movie synopses and ratings. Also included are indices on movie writers, cinematographers, composers and categories -how many Zorro movies are there? (13!). There are over 30 pages of major awards- and even a section on alternate titles! Apparently, "Summer Stock" may also called "If You Feel Like Singing"! It could easily take a lifetime to mine the nuggets here. The only possible weakness to GMR is the paper cover, which should be well worn very quickly. Answers to the questions above are: "The Harder They Fall" (1956); "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946); 49 (count `em!); 43; 1979 and "A Matter of Time" (1976). What's not to like? There is absolutely nothing for a movie fan to ponder here. Hit hat "Add to Cart" button now!

This book is has everything you need to finish the game, the only real problem is that the "spoilers" that pop up to tell you how to finish a puzzel are in to plain eye sight, and unless you have the will-power of a monk in the playboy mantion, you end up looking at the spoiler before you even try working out the puzzel. other than that this book includes all you need to help you with the game. a must for the true NeverhoOd fan.

A Basic Primer on Strategic Intelligence.......2007-09-23
"Strategic Intelligence for American National Security", first published in 1989, is a solid, if now dated, survey of the means, methods, pitfalls, and lasting importance of strategic intelligence.
Authors Berkowitz and Goodman wrote at a time when countering the Soviet Union was still the number one U.S. security challenge, and when the Iran-Contra scandal was the latest failure of American intelligence. It is a tribute to the quality of their writing, and to the stubborn challenges of the intelligence business, that this book is still valid reading for the general student and for the dedicated professional.
With clear, even-handed prose, the authors guide the reader through the steps of the intelligence cycle: planning, collection, analysis, and dissemination, while addressing the challenges particular to each phase. The authors deserve credit for suggesting plausible fixes as well as pointing out faults. They rightly note that many so-called intelligence failures are equally the fault of the intelligence consumer or decision-maker. Their lengthy discussion of the importance of diligent Congressional oversight of intelligence is both timely and ironic in the wake of the current Global War On Terrorism. An appendix with a checklist of the things that can go wrong with the intelligence cycle is a key takeaway for the intelligence professional.
The current complex threat environment facing the United States, only hinted at in an afterword by the authors, is if anything an even tougher intelligence challenge than the long twilight duel with the Soviets. Likewise, the book does not address the benefits and the shortfalls of the Information Age and networked warfare. Nevertheless, this book is highly recommended to the general student and to the intelligence professional as a good survey.
Still Valuable, Really Solid Basic Stuff.......2000-04-08
This is an even-tempered book, combining a good primer of the nature of the intelligence process with some analytically-oriented thoughts on needed improvements. Their appendix listing things that can go wrong at each step of the intelligence cycle is of lasting value, as is their glossary. Their forthcoming book, Best Truth: Intelligence in the Information Age (Yale, April 2000) will assuredly be a major contribution.

This survey of more than fifty years of national security policy juxtaposes declassified U.S. national intelligence estimates with recently released Soviet documents disclosing the views of Soviet leaders and their Communist allies on the same events. Matthias shows that U.S. intelligence estimates were usually correct but that our political and military leaders generally ignored them—with sometimes disastrous results.
The book begins with a look back at the role of U.S. intelligence during World War II, from Pearl Harbor through the plot against Hitler and the D-Day invasion to the "unconditional surrender" of Japan, and reveals how better use of the intelligence available could have saved many lives and shortened the war. The following chapters dealing with the Cold War disclose what information and advice U.S. intelligence analysts passed on to policymakers, and also what sometimes bitter policy debates occurred within the Communist camp, concerning Vietnam, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban missile crisis, the turmoil in Eastern Europe, the Six-Day and Yom Kippur wars in the Middle East, and the Soviet intervention in Afganistan. In many ways, this is a story of missed opportunities the U.S. government had to conduct a more responsible foreign policy that could have avoided large losses of life and massive expenditures on arms buildups.
While not exonerating the CIA for its own mistakes, Matthias casts new light on the contributions that objective intelligence analysis did make during the Cold War and speculates on what might have happened if that analysis and advice had been heeded.

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST BOOK ON THE WAY INTELLIGECE IS IGNORED IN MAKING KEY POLICIES. MATTHIAS WAS HIGH IN THE CIA AND PRIVY TO MUCH INFORMATION. I KNOW OF NO BETTER ACCOUNT THAN THIS, AND I HAVE READ MANY.
Solid Thinking on Disconnects Between Policy & Intelligence.......2001-07-04
I like and recommend this book because it is an important personal account from a very talented senior intelligence estimates professional. It documents in great detail a number of extremely serious mistakes on the part of U.S. policy makers from World War II through to Reagan years, while also recounting the history of how the Pentagon helped destroy CIA's independent assessments capability.
Time and time again throughout this book one sees references to "state of mind" and "mindset", and this is important. The author has a very fine grasp of how debilitating ingrained mindsets can be--the military mindset that focuses on buying more and more high technology even though it is demonstrably irrelevant to our most urgent strategic needs; the policy mindset that emphasizes the need for a tangible "main enemy" even as we destroy the environment and ignore catastrophic diseases and failed states; and the intelligence mindset that values secrecy and blind loyalty over public disclosure and public service.
I am especially impressed by the author's past responsibility for preparing the "Estimate of the World Situation", and how compellingly he distinguishes between the great days when such estimates were both produced and consumed, and today's state of affairs, where only "hard targets" are the object of our obsession, and "rest of the world" is poorly addressed.
The integrity of intelligence is a theme than runs throughout the book, and for that reason alone I recommend it for every policy and intelligence professionals' library. There are also compelling insights and thoughtful quotes.
The author's itemization of seven structural anomalies and states of mind that were present in World War II and can be seen today is worth abstracting here: 1. Absolute commitment to unconditional surrender eliiminated possibilities for undermining Hitler from within; 2. Allied command structure was not unified in fact; 3. There were no functioning lines of communication between tactical military and tactical (field) intelligence units; 4. Military leaders had a tactical intelligence state of mind, not a strategic intelligence state of mind, and were overly dependent on signals intelligence; 5. Military leaders were absolutely committed to established plans and unwilling to deviate or consider alternatives even in the face of compelling intelligence; 6. Moral self-righteousness and political naivete blinded Allied political and military leaders to the efforts of moderating forces in Germany ready to start an internal war; 7. Concept of war shifted away from the Clausewitzian "trinity" toward a "total war" emphasizing societal destruction and victory at any cost.
As his book goes on to document, these problems have been with us through the entire Cold War period, and have resulted in great waste of the taxpayer dollar as well as extraordinary risk of nuclear war with the Soviets during the 1980's when we played a very confrontational game with very limited policy level appreciation of just how desperate the Soviets might be.
This is not a book that offers solutions or suggestions for improving the vitality of intelligence or the attention span of policy makers, but it is an excellent contribution to what one can only hope will eventually be a truly public debate about the need for restoring America's strategic intelligence analysis capabilities, and making both intelligence producers and intelligence consumers accountable for "informed policy."
