Customer Reviews:
Short, but good stories about Coach Rupp.......2003-01-13
I was a fan of the UK Wildcats when I was younger--before I grew up--and I admired Adolph Rupp. The book is too short, but it is filled with stories about the man. It does not promote the myth that he was racist--he wasn't. He was just a man of his times, but he was a winner in everything he did.
"Baron of the Bluegrass".......2000-12-08
"Baron of the Bluegrass" is a wonderful copilation of quotes by and about fromer Unversity of Kentucky basketball coach Adolph Rupp. This thoughtful collection by Embry -- apparently himself a keen student of the game -- shows his insight and love for his subject.
Embry captures the essence of Rupp's drive, ambition and punctuates it with a sense of history as well as a touch of humor in giving us a glimpse into the character that was Adolph Rupp.
Reasonably priced, this book is is an affordable gift for any fan of basketball, especially Kentucky basketball.
The reader is rewarded by Embry's attention to detail, and this highly collectible edition is certain to be a much appreciated addition to any sports fans' libraby

Rupp the legend.......2000-04-06
This book outlined the magic that Adolph Rupp brought to the University of Kentucky and all of college basketball. A harsh man by nature, Rupp turned his players into men and taught them the lessons of life along the way. It was briliantly written and comes highly recommended to any University of Kentucky fan.

Brigitte Bardot, her skirt twirling around her waist; Marlon Brando, smoking on a boardwalk; Jane Fonda, posing coyly in a bikini; Grace Kelly, staring at a caged lion; Sophia Loren, her pearl necklace in her mouth; Cary Grant, grinning roguishly from the back of a convertible--these are but a few of the photos captured by photographer Anthony Quinn. The pages of this fabulous, oversized book are filled with unusually intimate photos of the greatest movie stars. Quinn lived in the Riviera, where he photographed his subjects. Since many of them were on vacation, he was able to capture these public personalities in a relatively private, relaxed mode. To flip the pages is to discover charming, intimate portraits of people used to posing for the camera. This collection of photos is so exciting because it portrays these intensely famous people as they most likely were, not how their studios, publicists, fans or even their own egos wanted them to be.

COOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!.......2000-05-04
Star Trek TNG it my favorite T.V. show! This book is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! READ IT!!!!!
Good for getting info. on the careers of the actors.......1999-03-14
I LOVE Star Trek: The Next Generation. While I couldn't put this book down, it left a lot to be desired. It is basically a collection of mini auto-biographies about the cast focusing on their acting careers. If you want to know more about the characters they play this book offers little insight. If however you are looking for information on the lives of the actors, then this is the book you want. And the title holds true: the crew of the Enterprise-D is the finest crew in the fleet, in any time period.
Every Star Trek fan should own this book!.......1998-07-18
Being a lifelong Star Trek fan, I'm used to reading about Trek. A great many of the biographies and "histories" of Trek are boring and poorly written. Finally, here's a book that not only gives you interesting details about the crew we know and love (Yes, the Next Generation crew), but it's well written. This book gives us intimate portraits of the Star Trek actors, the actors who seem so much a part of their roles it's a shock to see them out of uniform. The book reads like a breeze, and confidently exposes the lives and loves of the actors we feel we know so well. Some of the details Shrager elicits are moving; for example, learning of Patrick Stewart's unhappy childhood makes one feels all the more satisfied that he has hit it big. Of course, the browsing reader will enjoy the spectacular photographs, which create a kind of dizziness when you first see them (Jean-Luc with hair! Worf on "CHiPs"!), but the more careful reader will note the way ! Shrager blends intimate details of the actors with the nature of the characters they play. This is good stuff. On a comic note, the great cover you're looking at caused the hacks at Paramount no end of worry; they had the same cover slated for a book they released months later. Of course it flopped; it was nowhere near as good as this one. Buy it, read it, love it.
I can't get enough of this cast!.......1998-05-20
I received the book yesterday in the mail, and I'm really enjoying it! I have read so much about the different characters, but there are always aspects we don't know. I loved the Brent Spiner chapter, I didn't know his make-up had been removed with a kerosene based remover! It was the little things like that, that have made the book highly enjoyable. The pictures are great too, I love the one on the back cover. I think the cast of TNG consits of an exceptional group of actors, who are highly talented and very enjoyable to watch and read about! I'm very passionate about the series, and consider it to be one of my favorite shows. Thanks for writing a book where I can read more about the cast when I need to. They are truly wonderful. Thank you! LJB
Combines all the facts into one condensed version- excellent.......1997-07-17
This is a necessary book for any Next Generation fan. It takes the rumors we know and the facts we never heard and combines them into one useful text. I learned more about the actors from the series than I had anywhere else. I truly hope another one comes along. Great pictures too

Customer Reviews:
Sears/Roebuck catalog of the future.......2002-12-28
The DragonStar universe is in someways the evolution of the old SpellJammer campaign setting. Some of the computer stuff in here will have you thinking of earlier science fantasy setting by FASA called Shadowrun I'm non too sure about that but the same geniuses that brought us Arsenal is going to be visiting this subject Factory(a book I plan on getting without even bothering to paw through first as I found Arsenal to be that good) so we'll know more when it comes out. Standing on its own merits, Imperial Supply crams computer equipment, weapons, armor, robots and vehicles into one book. There is so much gear in here there is not enough room for a prestige class even if they wanted to shoehorn one in, and this a good thing. Vehicles and vehicle design comprise a good hunk of the back of the book but the vehicle design rules are well though out and rather concise making the whole book a nice tool box for customizing a given campaign. Someone else has recommeded geting this with Arsenal and it's a good suggestion, keep in mind that Dragonstar leans more heavily on hard core science fiction in concept and execution than magic where as Arsenal seeks to fully combine the two into a seamless whole. Convergent evolution at its finest compare and contrast these two at you leisure and decide for yourself. Personally, I'm keeping both and using both in the Dragonstar campaign I'm planning.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Reference Guide to Keep.......2007-06-09
As everyone who has worked in an office environment knows, not every co-worker is happy, productive and helpful. Human beings come in all shapes and sizes. For whatever reason, some people simply do not work and play well with others. While a co-worker has little recourse, the manager has a responsibility to address this issue and find a solution that ensures the whole team is not damaged by this one individual.
Managing Difficult People by Marilyn Pincus does not expect you to become a psychotherapist. In fact, she says flat out that in most cases it doesn't matter WHY the person is the way they are. Maybe it was childhood trauma, maybe it is a rough home situation. You can never "fix" a person. What you have to do, as a manager, is learn how to set up an environment that minimizes this person's negative impact on the group - and gives the individual the best possible chance to succeed.
The book breaks problems out into main categories - the bully, the procrastinator, and so on. Most people have different traits co-mingled, but if you work on issues one by one, that gives you the best chance of success. For each issue, the book goes step by step through techniques that work with that type of person, including examples.
I'm very happy that this book is also realistic about what you can hope to achieve. Where other books make you think that ANY problem can be solved, this book lays out when it's time to take further action, including documenting the issue, working to fire the person and even to bring in legal help. Not every situation can be resolved.
You can certainly just read through the book from start to finish, but where most books you read once and then donate to your local library, this one is a keeper. If an employee suddenly starts being late all the time, you can go back and re-read the chapter on procrastinators and learn some techniques to help them out.
Highly recommended!
Insightful and Informative!.......2007-02-23
This is an informative book to assist managers, particularly the junior and middle managers, to deal with difficult employees. The book describes the various kinds of negative or difficult people that one can encounter in an organization including the bully, the complainer or whiner, the procrastinator, the know-it-all, the silent type, the social butterfly, the "no people skills" person, the rookie, the overly sensitive person and the manipulator. Such difficult people disrupt the working environment, and hence the need for managers to take timely steps to adequately handle such negative people.
Marilyn Pincus does a good job of explaining the motivations of difficult people. She then presents tips, strategies and techniques for coping with them, whether or not you manage to figure out their motivations. This little book is a handy companion as the author provides practical and workable tips, strategies and recommendations to help you get the desired outcomes. Nevertheless, you need to bear in mind that some of the suggested strategies may be culture specific and you may need to adjust your style accordingly. It is also important to note that the manager's attitude influences the outcome when dealing with difficult people. However, all-in-all, I found the advice and suggestions that Marilyn provides to be useable and valuable.
This is a unique book because it provides a comprehensive analysis of a wide range of negative and difficult behaviour in an organization which you are not likely to get in any other book on the subject. The book is recommended reading for managers who need to achieve optimal results for their organizations by avoiding or effectively dealing with disruptions arising from difficult people.
Nothing New.......2007-01-16
There was nothing new in this book that wasn't in any other managment book I have read.
Highly Recommended!.......2005-04-29
You can learn how to handle problem employees three ways: figure it out for yourself, get a great mentor or read this book. Designed primarily for managers rather than human resources professionals, it's a handy guide to different problem personalities. Author Marilyn Pincus provides several alternative solutions for how to counter each type's negative influence on your organization. Her clear writing and thoughtful organization make the book even more useful. While author Pincus doesn't provide detailed advice on the legal and procedures aspects of employment, she does tell you when the ice is getting thin enough to seek the advice of professionals. We strongly prescribe her book to help bring managerial blood pressure readings back into the normal range.

Book Description
A unique glimpse into the remarkable life, and fascinating mindset, of the woman who broke records-and boundaries-for female athletes everywhere.
If there were such a thing as an "elder" stateswoman in women's gymnastics today, Nadia Comaneci would win that title as readily as she once won gold medals. Olga Korbut came before her, and many other medalists would follow, but none has ever been as dominant in winning the hearts of millions around the world. With grit and determination, Nadia Comaneci ushered in a new era for women's sports, one where young girls could vault into the arena of superstardom. Even today, almost thirty years after her greatest triumphs, you need only mention the name "Nadia" and gymnastics fans know instantly whom you are talking about.
In Letters to a Young Gymnast, Nadia shows what it takes to achieve athletic perfection and become the best. With inspiring and dramatic stories from her own experience, she tells us how the young girl that Bela Karolyi discovered in a Romanian elementary school found the inner strength to become a world-class athlete at such a young age. This collection of Nadia's memories, anecdotes, and advice grants unique insights into the mind of a top competitor. From how to live after you've realized your dream, to the necessity of "a spirit forged with mettle," Nadia's thoughts on athleticism and sacrifice are eye-opening and surprisingly challenging.
Customer Reviews:
overrated gymnast.......2007-01-26
We are taken on a journey through Nadia's life, we feel we are spectators and are there with her every step of the way, at her baptism ,at the olympics,in the gymn and at her home. The reader ends up by feeling he knows her well. As we embark on this voyage we see she makes mistakes as we all do, she admits she was defensive on a Tv show after defecting to America, that as a consequence of her parents' divorce she overate. She does not make excuses but gives an honest account. This honesty and frankness also extends to the admission she made in 1980 that Yelena Davydova simply performed better on the day and that her victory was not a result of fixing as Bela Karolyi would like people to believe, she also admits that her first routine on the bars which earned a 10 was not perfect and that throughout the olympics she felt the judges were being too good to her. We also meet a decent woman who does not want to live off the income of a romanian widow and her son. But she does not give much credit to other gymnasts. She rightly pays tribute to Yelena Mukhina who broke her neck and was paralyzed as a result, but says so little about her. She mentions that she was not sure exactly how the accident occurred, which I find hard to believe because the whole world knows. The only other gymnasts she really has time for are Lyudmilla Tourisheva and Mary Lou Retton, the former was her idol, the other was great. What about Teodora, Olga Korbut, etc? I feel she was overrated and certainly overrated herself, for she argues that before 1976 few gymnasts took risks, the comaneci salto was never attempted before by anyone and was the first big release at the 76 olympics. It is true that through out the 1950s and 60s a lot of gymnasts were women. Bar and beam routines in particular were considered elementary but in those years there were innovations, at the 1952 olympics Maria Gorokhovskaya dismounted by standing on high bar and pushing into a back tuck salto , the rachodla salto between bars appeared in 1966 to give only 2 examples but from 1972 onwards routines get riskier. The so called comaneci salto had been done before by Karin Janz in munich. She first performed in 1971. Annelore Zinke also performed it in 1974.Barbara Myslak (Usa)performed a whip cast flip from high to high bar in 1974 and around the same time Denise Cheshire (Usa) also innovated a snap flip high to high bar these latter 2 examples would suggest that Olga Korbut and not Nadia really inspired gymnasts to higher, more dangerous levels and made salto releases obligatory. What about olga korbuts flip on bars? This is never mentioned and Olga was performing this release in 1976 as were at least 20 others, so it is wrong to say Nadia's salto was the first release at montreal. Lastly the so called dismount named after her, the only new element Nadia introduced was the half turn. There were gymnasts performing back saltos as dismounts, Angelika Hellman performed a back tuck dismount from bars in munich, Olga performed a salto back stretched with take off from bar and Nadia chatarova of Bulgaria performed a double back tuck dismount in montreal this last element together with olga korbuts back flip on bars and her dismount were much more difficult than Nadia's comaneci salto and dismount. People were doing half twists but in conjunction with hechts. Half twists were not exactly a novelty. The Comaneci salto is just simply someone else's somersault performed in different take off position. She argues that it is not attempted by many because it is difficult ( are not all saltos on bars) and that you cannot be the slightest bit out when you attempt it but you can in other saltos( hard to believe).
Great , but ............2005-10-23
Personally, my favorite gymnast is Olga Korbut. But I like Nadia , too. This book was great. I could really understand why she became successful and superstar. I like the part Nadia has 10 rules to live by, and she knows the secret of success since when she was such a young age. That's very amazing. Her rules gave me power. Nadia is a very strong super woman. However, there are some disappointments , she never talks about her teammate Teodora Ungureanu, who seemed to be her good friend during the 1976 Olympics. Teodora was also a great gymnast who later was a wonderful and daring circus performer. She also never talks about amazing gymnast Olga Korbut. Nadia's performance was perfect (1976 Olympic) but, I never even noticed the" Comaneci Salto" until I read about it in her book. Olga Korbut's back flip on uneven bars and her beam performance, her 1972 floor exercise was much more big impact, artistic, creative and unbelievable performance. Nadia compliments only herself and her coach and her family. and also compliments Mary Lou Retton ???? what a joke ???? I understand Nadia is not very interested in other performers. If she was just a litte more humble and with a sense of humor, this book could be more fun to read.
Letters to a Young Gymnast: Nadia Comaneci.......2005-09-06
Since I was a gymnast for many, many years, I have read quite a few gymnastics books, but none had impressed me too much until I read this one. Perhaps it is because Nadia not only talked about her gymnastics, but also about the conditions and struggles of life in Communist Romania. It is not only a biography, but also historical as well.
The book was very clear and easy to read, so younger gymnastics fans should have no problem getting through it. It was also very interesting (something I truly did not expect) and a page turner. It answered many questions gymnastics fans have had through the years.
Nadia's story is very impressive, and, at times, even heartbreaking. It's hard to believe that, by reading this book, you'll eventually "feel" for probably the most successful gymnast in the history of the sport. Her life wasn't always as glorious as you may think.
I'd suggest gymnastics fans read this book because it's simply very good and very well written, and also very, very interesting. Also, if you're simply interested in learning more about how life was like in a communist country, this book may just be the book for you!

An Excellent Read & Diary Topic Idea Starter.......2004-12-03
Nadia's book exceeded my expectations with her insightful words of philosophy and colorfully poetic descriptions.
Her autobiographical account, packaged with thought-provoking questions and comments aimed towards her readers, struck several deep chords in my life-pondering mind. There is plenty of food for thought which would particularly hit home for readers who find themselves at a crossroads in their lives. Nadia's experiences, hardships, successes are truly inspiring pieces of her world that many readers could relate to and possibly find light in their own circumstances.
In a way, it was a good thing that there were no pictures included because I could focus more on the intellectual aspect of the story than the visual. At the same time, it would have been a great idea to include a few early photos along with some recent ones of herself, since she does mention that she hopes people will be interested in who she is now and not so much on the little girl she used to be.
As far as gymnastics tips, Nadia gives them in the form of using one's pyschology for greater benefit. She also includes a list for success in life towards the end of the book. Naturally, even I was curious enough to expect, and miss, a bit of flexibility or skill-specific boosting advice from her perspective.
This story is indeed a fantastic motivational tool for others. Those who say otherwise have simply not taken the time or effort to read into what Nadia's story offers or pinpoint the wonderful wisdom she provides.

Book Description
Burma remains the odd man out in South East Asia. It is a military dictatorship, not part of the region's still-dynamic economy, and has a troubled relationship with the outside world, including that fact that it is the second largest supplier of heroin. This exceptionally readable account of Burma gives a graphic, often moving, and always insightful picture of what life under military rule is like for ordinary Burmese. This survey takes in a wide diversity of ordinary people and communities.

Insight of Burma under Juntas.......2003-06-25
The book can provide an insight of Burma under military rule.
The author has learned much about real concerns and issues in the country. The interesting is that the author was able to inform the rarely known rituals of the Junta. Many interviews were done and good and first-hand informations can be seen on the book.
Comprehensive and useful.......2002-12-08
Cristina Fink's book Living Silence: Burma Under Military Rule is a hard-hitting examination of what life was (and perhaps still is) like under the repressive rule of the Burmese military. Using an extensive set of interviews, and the underground writings of dissidents, Fink outlines and looks at the real psychological consequences of years of repression. Perhaps the closest real world example of what Michel Foucault would call a "carceral society". Fink brings the Panopticon to life. My understanding of the issues in Burma was greatly enhanced by reading this book and I recommend it highly.

A world apart..........2001-11-16
This book takes one to a country that is "a world apart" in a multitude of ways from what we know here in America. A fascinating read that is sure to captivate and enrich the reader with newfound knowledge and awareness. A brilliant debut by an author I hope we'll see much more of in years to come.
A good read..........2001-06-02
A facinating, well written book that sheds light on an area of the world I knew little about. I usually find scholarly works somewhat dry and hard to get through. This book was hard to put down. I won't launch into a lecture on why you SHOULD read this or try to impress with my newfound knowledge of the struggles of the Burmese people. I will tell you that this a great, readable book that will educate you and hold your interest. Buy it.

Book Description
Critics of environmental laws complain that such rules often burden people unequally, restrict individual liberty, and undercut private property rights. In formulating responses to these criticisms, the conservation effort has stumbled badly, says Eric T. Freyfogle in this thought-provoking book. Conservationists and environmentalists haven’t done their intellectual homework, he contends, and they have failed to offer an understandable, compelling vision of healthy lands and healthy human communities.
Freyfogle explores why the conservation movement has responded ineffectually to the many cultural and economic criticisms leveled against it. He addresses the meaning of good land use, describes the many shortcomings of “sustainability,” and outlines six key tasks that the cause must address. Among these is the crafting of an overall goal and a vision of responsible private ownership. The book concludes with a stirring message that situates conservation within America’s story of itself and with an extensive annotated bibliography of conservation’s most valuable voices and texts—important information for readers prepared to take conservation more seriously.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite enough ground gained here.......2006-12-11
If you have been following Eric Freyfogle's work, then you should probably get this book. It builds on his ongoing conversation about "land health" and our own responsibility. But it is not nearly as finely crafted as some of his earlier work--particularly "The Land We Share". Get that book first if you haven't read Freyfogle yet. In this book, Freyfogle continues to build on Leopold and Berry in searching for a coherent story for conservation and land health. Two weak chapters in my opinion mar this otherwise fine work. Chapter 2 is a critique of what Freyfogle calls the "tend the garden" mentality, which he appears to link to the "wise-use" and property rights movements. There are some merits to his arguments, but he takes it a bit too far. Leopold's work very much recognized the critical and unavoidable role of humans for building healthy land. See "Gardeners of Eden", by Dan Dagget, for what I would consider a Leopoldian use of the garden metaphor about using nature to heal the earth. Freyfogle's other mistep is an attack on the concept of sustainability. He considers the idea to be too broad to be useful, and too amenable to being corrupted by a "whatever works" kind of ethic. At one point he even criticizes the powerful "triple bottom line" of economy, ecology, and community. What could be closer to a real land health ethic than integration of those three areas?
These two digressions aside, the book is a stimulating read, and if you are part of this conversation or are following it, then you need to read this book. I don't think it is quite the full expression of the land ethic, but it moves us in that direction.
A section of "Conservations Central Readings" at the end is almost worth the price of the book (well--maybe the price when it comes out in paperback, anyway!).
The rebirth of conservation.......2006-05-17
This book takes us to the fundamentals of conservation and what we need to get good land use that promotes healthy lands and people. Freyfogle tells us that conservation needs an overall goal, it needs new ideas of private property, it needs new mechanisms for making collective decisions. Those are the top three tasks he outlines. And, he argues persuasively, it will take changes at the level of cultural attitudes and values to bring them about. Without fulfilling these three top tasks, society will not be able to solve environmental and land use problems, including agricultural desertification, suburban sprawl, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution and lots of other conservation challenges. This book is a must read for anyone calling himself or herself a conservationist or who is interested in learning more about becoming one. It points the way to the opening of a new chapter in American land use and a new more positive vision for conservation. And it's nicely written to boot.
