Very Sad Story-But Good.......2003-07-24

Dearest Vicky Darling Fritz was a very interesting book and also very informative. When reading it I felt very sad for Vicky and Fritz for all the things they had to go threw, such as children who made trouble for them, a minister who did not like them, Fritz's father who would not give them the respect they diserved, and to top it off Fritz's death of cancer four months after becoming Kaiser Fredrick III.

There are better books out there........2002-06-01

This was fairly interesting and well written, but for a good, thorough biography of Princess Vicky, "An Uncommon Woman" is a far better choice. On the other hand, if you are looking for a fairly brief overview of her life and loves, this book will spare you the extreme detail found in "Uncommon Woman."

It was a rarity indeed that a royal marriage would be a happy one; that was never the idea of alliances such as the one between Victoria, Princess Royal, and Crown Prince Frederich of Prussia--but a happy marriage is exactly what they had. A partnership between a good man and an exceptionally intelligent, perceptive, loving woman. Vicky was maligned in her adopted country, gossiped about, belittled, and ultimately emotionally abused by her two eldest children, but she remained a remarkable woman nonetheless. This is a fascinating book about a devoted couple.

Considerable dissapointment.......2006-10-16

I read this book and kept expecting to see diagrams and descriptions of things that nobody else but the Countess could possibly have had, some of the unusually high-tech equipment that she used in the film, the highly specialized things reminiscent of Batman. But her high-tech binoculars and her high-tech piton pistol were NOT SHOWN. There were only things like her .45-caliber pistols. I mean, come on! I can identify the *gunsmith* already. There was nothing particularly unusual about them, one can even get them as toys! Why would anyone be particularly interested in them? Then there was her run-of-the-mill BORING BORING huge Land Rover. Pfagh! A sop to the foolish masses who are interested in accursed immoral *monster trucks*! A gas mask. Gas masks are not unusual. A stupid, unrealistic robot. A security system. What is interesting or unusual about a security system? Gloves, boots, *clothing*? I have no interest in what clothing the Countess chooses to wear.

Very Entertaining..........2003-10-21

If you're a fan of the Tomb Raider movie, I'd recommend it. It was very entertaining to read and there were lots of detailed pictures (close ups of her guns, motorcycle get up - helmet, glove, boot) a nice shot of the Land Rover and all the gadgets and nick nacks inside... I kinda wish they'd release one for the "Cradle of Life" there were even MORE gadgets and cool "toys" in that one!

A Good Book.......2002-08-31

This book is an excellent guide to the Tomb Raider Movie. It shows you all of Lara's weapons and gadgets used in the movie and some that "Bryce developed for her" but were not used.It is amusing to read how Lara is never completley happy with what Bryce gives her. But the book would have been better in a more detailed version with labelled diagrams, etc. Like the "Star Wars Visual Dictionaries" or "The Secret World Of 007". But it is a good book, especially if you loved the gadgets from the movie.

I like this book it tells all of Lara's gadgets and gizmo's that Bryce comes up with for her. It was very interesting to look at. The only thing is dont look for this book to actually read. It is more of a picture kinda book with a little of words describing the item and how much Lara likes it. On the other hand it is very cool! check it out!

Actually, Advance, Exchange and Offbeat french book.......2005-10-29

This book is a must have for the serious french player just for one reason: it is the only book available at the moment that have, decently covered the exchange variation of the french (which, when you think about it is pretty amazing but is true). Actually, this is decent book covering mainly the advance variation (95 pages), and few offbeat ones, like 2.d3 and 2.De2, offering 27 pages for it. For exchange it offers 30 pages, which is not bad at all. Well, maybe a bit better book for advance is Tony Kostens French Advance, but its a pretty dated now (1997), so this Psakhis book is still the winner.

Detailed but so demanding!.......2005-04-11

I found the text to be frustrating at times as I kept losing my place in the maze of variations. More is definitely not better. It was almost as if we had had access to his notebook computer files where variation upon variation had been patched in over the years.
The author is a highly respected French defence exponent. Perhaps it showed my own shortcomings and is more suited to 2000+ rated players.

Review of Information Security Illuminated.......2007-01-10

I had the good fortune to study under the co-author of this book Mike Chapple and we used this book as a text for the course. The book is layed out well for a class text on the subject matter. Over all it is clear and concise.
This is not to say that anyone won't gain knowledge from this book. I ended up reading the entire book (which was not covered in the class) and have picked up just as much information from the book.
For those out there attempting to gain security knowledge, this book gives you just that very well.

Solomon gives a pretty good summation of the topic. Little is assumed of the reader except a general background in computing. He covers the main aspects in enough detail for you to understand the gist.

Intrusion Detection Systems get good play. So too are their logical successors - Intrusion Prevention Systems. Both defend against malware attacks. Though sadly, he refrains from using the commonly accepted term malware.

In the context of spam, he warns against running an open mail relay. Because spammers can detect this and shovel their spam through it. With the likely consequence that your machine and network can get blacklisted by irate recipient networks.

There's much more in the book. But the above should give the flavour of what he covers.

Life Changing Book.......2006-02-28

This anthology of stories is a must-read for any person working with fraternity and sorority members. The experiences shared are heartfelt, sincere, comforting and eye-opening to the experience of men discovering their identity in the midst of a college fraternity experience. Just as well done as "Out on Fraternity Row", but even more powerful.

"Brotherhood" offers a message of hope.......2005-12-21

"Brotherhood: Gay Life In College Fraternities" is the follow up to "Out on Fraternity Row", yet it delves deeper into the secrets of gay men who, in order to find acceptance in themselves and in life, immerse themselves in the college fraternal system. The tales that emerge from their travels are sometimes heart warming and amusingly annecdotal; occasionally filled with guilt, lonliness and rejection; often met with acceptance and brotherly love; and above all true. The prevailing message is that hope and love lies at the end of the tunnel.
The many authors who share their stories in this collection are not full time writers, but men who wanted to open themselves and their experience for future generations. College men and women involved in the Greek system should definitely read this book, they may identify with the stories or situations. It should also be a must read for any man or woman who now or at one time in their life found themselves struggling to find love and acceptance, gay or otherwise.

Score another victory for the gay Greeks. This 2nd installment takes the groundbreaking work of "Out on Fraternity Row" to a higher level. This book manages to be informative, educational, and even a bit sexy. All in all, a good read.

Brotherhood in Two Centuries.......2005-11-04

Last century I read Out on Fraternity Row an edited compilation of personal accounts of being gay in the American college fraternity spanning the 1960s through the early `90s. This century I just completed Brotherhood another compilation edited by Shane Windmeyer. Both books were produced under the auspicious of the Lambda 10 Project, an outgrowth of Windmeyer's graduate research program.

These two books give an interesting contrast on how things have changed. Society is changing and fraternities could prove to be the bellwether of what is to come. If you are interested in the societal tolerance question toward homosexual men within heterosexual America, these two books give interesting insight. I'd read this in sequence if I were you.

One unintended message I observed between the lines of Brotherhood is that the more accepting individual chapters are toward their brothers who are gay, the more open the brotherhood is, the less alcohol and/or drugs figure into the stories. Check this out. We are all insecure and need to become self-actualized in our masculinity. The support of a truly open fraternity seems not to use the crutch of libation to hide, numb, excuse or avoid what we all are - people, men.

Shane Windmeyer is my fraternity brother. I'm glad he is. He is making a difference with this research.

We have all heard how sequels to either books or movies never seem to come close to the original; however, when it comes to Brotherhood: Gay life in College Fraternities, I would have to say Shane Windmeyer has out done himself. With heroic stories of accomplishments and tales of stories you may never have heard someone speak of, this book offers author's, reader's, and anyone else who just glances through its stunning pages, the ability to jump right into the story and live it with that person. A big KUDOS is in order for the amount of work and preperation all of these authors had to go through in getting this done. Thank you Shane for producing such a vibrant and visual book for the public to read and understand the mystery behind Fraternities and to dispell the myths.

This work is the most complete about experimental weapons of German army, for its illustrations and descriptions, and because it reports also a list of a lot of interesting prototypes.

Within the circles of WWII researchers it is accepted that Mr. Henshall's books are full of theories and fundemental errors. His books offer little information about his sources and no relevant references. They make for great movie scripts but, not factual history.

What are the relationships among religion, politics, and narratives? What makes prophetic political narratives congenial or hostile to democratic political life? David S. Gutterman explores the prophetic politics of four twentieth- and twenty-first-century American Christian social movements: the Reverend Billy Sunday and his vision of "muscular Christianity"; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement; the conservative Christian male organization Promise Keepers; and the progressive antipoverty organization Call to Renewal.

Gutterman develops a theory based on the work of Hannah Arendt and others and employs this framework to analyze expressions of the prophetic impulse in the political narrative of the United States. In the process, he examines timely issues about the tense and intricate relationship between religion and politics. Even prior to George W. Bush's "faith-based initiative," debates about abortion, family values, welfare reform, and environmental degradation were informed by religious language and ideas.
