Diana's love/hate relationship with the camera is evident from countless photos snatched by ruthless paparazzi. But Diana: Princess of Wales presents an adoring portrait of this widely admired and gentle woman. The book's 200-plus beautiful photographs chronicle Diana's life from early childhood through her somber funeral. The images range from a giggly schoolgirl to a still-playful mother to the perfect English rose celebrated in song.

Michael O'Mara, one of Britain's leading editors of books about the princess, chose his own favorite pictures for publication in this book, including those taken by Diana's father and by Patrick Demarchelier in the 1990s. Many of these photos were also Diana's favorites, taken with full permission. A donation from the sale of each copy will go to the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. --Gina Kaysen

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Ravishing !.......2006-07-09

I just loved this huge/thick Book...The pictures are simply AWESOME & HRH Princess Lady Diana looks simply BEAUTIFUL (whether as a child, teenager, youth, adult, wife, mother, social worker or as a Princess)...So go BUY it, if u still LOVE her the way I do.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars - for the pictures.......2001-08-01

This book is a memorial edition of a similar book these guys did of the Princess some time before her death. It has quite a few pictures that you'll rarely see elsewhere, probably because O'Mara is our pal Andrew Morton's publisher and they had worked with him and in effect used the Princess to get a hot seller.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2001-06-02

This is by far one of the best and most tasteful photographic remembrances for the late princess. The pictures, ranging from her childhood to her public duties as Princess of Wales, all show Diana as the real, beautiful, kind, wonderful, HUMAN person she was. You don't just see the public photographs of her, but also, as has been said in reviews before, personal photographs from her family albums. This is a fabulous book, and most definitely recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This is a lovely tribute to the late princess........1998-12-31

O'Mara in his tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, uses pictures which were taken by her father, the late Earl Spencer for her years as a toddler, her childhood, and her youth. Naturally, he selects those which were her favorites. His photographic tribute begins with Diana as a toddler and goes through her untimely and tragic death. This tribute contains many photographs from her childhood and youth which I had never seen before.

In the forward, O'Mara writes: " I once wrote that Diana, Princess of Wales, was the most loved person in the world. Now that she has been tagically taken from us, I realise that my words were not strong enough. Diana was a treasure; not just a national treasure, for her light was too bright to shine in one country alone, but a treasure to be shared with the world. The unprecedented level of worldwide grief for her has shown that the people's princess had no equal and can never be replaced. ....

"In preparing this tribute to Diana I have been stuck by the warmth that beams out from the Diana in the pictures - beautiful? Naturally - but it is that straight-forward human warmth of her expression which leaves the lasting impression."

O'Mara has each picture tastefully arranged and captioned according to place, date, etc. This is truly a beautiful tribute to a beautiful, young princess who will live forever in our hearts.

This is a hardback book which measures 83/4x12 inches and contains 160 pages.

5 out of 5 stars The true Princess Royal.......1998-06-01

I was lucky to go to the preauction showing of her gowns with my professor. This woman epitomizes what a 20th Century princess and Princess Royal should be. She is the true Once and Future Queen of England and Charles should be truly ashamed of himself and his selfish, immature behavior.

    Book Description

In 1972, as an eleven-year-old who lived for baseball, Tom Stanton dreamt of visiting Cooperstown. His plans for that summer never materialized, disappearing in the turmoil caused by his mother's life-threatening illness. Twenty-nine years later, he is invited to speak at the Hall of Fame. He asks his father and his brother to accompany him. Time has changed them all, and he recognizes one change in the rearview mirror: his dad is riding in the back seat of the car. All three men realize that this will be their last journey together. A true bonding experience is the heart of this book about baseball, family, the Hall of Fame, and the town with which it shares a rich heritage.

5 out of 5 stars Another emotional baseball saga from Tom Stanton.......2004-08-31

Like Tom Stanton's first book about Tiger Stadium's final season, this book combines great baseball stories into a family pilgramage. We learn not only about Cooperstown, but what it means to Stanton and his family. We get to know the Stantons in the same intimate way we come to know Cooperstown.

You will very much enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stanton in the Running for a 2nd CASEY Award.......2004-01-16

Great subject and wonderful execution. Even veteran Cooperstown-goers will learn things about the town and the Hall of Fame. No one has ever repeated as a CASEY Award winner. Will Stanton be the first?

    5 out of 5 stars One Family's Journey To Baseball's Shrine.......2003-06-07

I loved this book, and I think most baseball fans will, too. If "Field of Dreams" is your favorite baseball film, if you believe in baseball as poetry, baseball as religion, baseball as the glue binding fathers to sons, then this book is definitely for you.

The dream of visiting Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame first took hold of author Tom Stanton in the summer of 1972. His mother's illness prevented the trip from happening then, but an invitation to speak at the shrine after publication of his first book ("The Final Season") finally made it happen. He asked his father and older brother to join him, the men who first awakened in him the love of the game.

Chapters about their trip and the hall itself are interspersed with chapters looking back to 1972. Baseball memories, and the theme of the game as a metaphor for life, provide the interconnecting thread. It's a journey across the miles for the Stantons, but also a journey through the years. I'm glad to have been able to share it with them, and I hope you will, too.

      Book Description

This is a unique package for movie lovers--a handsome 160-page hardcover book with over 300 rare photographs--plus a 60 minute documentary with over 30 rare movie clips on both DVD and VHS video. This book / DVD / video package will excite anyone who loves movies and movie stars.

By day he was a Memphis truck driver who hated his job and aspired to become an electrical repairman. But young Elvis Presley had another dream, and in 1954 he stepped into the studio at Sun Records to say goodbye to driving trucks forever. Within two years, he was not only a recording star but a film star as well. The King was born.

When he arrived in Hollywood from his home in Missouri determined to make it, he found work at a Mexican restaurant wearing a chicken costume. But when Brad Pitt landed his first acting gig in Dallas it was in the role of the boyfriend of Priscilla Presley's on-screen daughter.

The road to stardom is filled with odd detours and some spectacular potholes. Their First Time in the Movies charts that crazy journey and the moment, the very edge of stardom, when some of our best-loved stars began to glimmer. We all know the Marilyn Monroe of Some Like it Hot and the Clark Gable of Gone with the Wind. Everyone remembers Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull, Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. But before they were stars they were hopefuls with talent, determination, and often an uncanny gift for following their illustrious destinies.

Now, for the first time ever, the first performances—in the movies—of over 30 top stars are collected on one video tape, complemented by a beautifully designed book that tells the stories of these stars, and 70 others, on their way to the top. It is a remarkable showcase of the raw talent that made our top entertainers the enduring stars they are.

4 out of 5 stars Stars on the Screen........2004-01-15

THEIR FIRST TIME IN THE MOVIES takes a look at movie stars from 1900-mid 1980s and examines the first time they acted in the movies. Stars discussed include Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire, Cary Grant, Dustin Hoffman, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Jack Lemmon, Robert DeNiro, and John Travolta among many others. Most of the actors in the book have one page devoted to their lives and their first time in the movies. The book is a solid hard-cover book and includes some interesting pieces of cinematic trivia.

This book also includes a video and DVD. The video and DVD contain somewhat different material than the book, but the two forms of media themselves are identical in content. Basically, the video/DVD is a documentary of several famous stars from the 1900s-the late 1970s. It briefly discusses each star and shows clips from their first motion pictures.

This is a great gift for any average movie fan. Granted much of the material can be found in other sources, but this set brings a lot of that stuff together fairly nicely.

A friend of mine told me about this book and it helps me understand, enjoy and have more success at the tables. Before, I'd blow through $100 before finishing a drink. Now I make more when I'm winning and quit before losing too much. Also, I don't make sucker bets that dealers try to talk you into. Feel more confident when walking up to a craps table- I don't expect to lose; I know I can win!

This book does a decent job of defining and describing craps but John Gollehon is a terrible writer. I would recommend Edwin Silberstang's "Winning Casino Craps" as a much better book for a person who wants to win. After reading Silberstang's book, I won over $800. You will not get that from this book.

I bought this book while on a short vacation in Vegas. After reading the book for a half hour, I then went to the craps table with a simple system that gives the best odds. I won. I WON!! And guess what, craps is THE most action packed exciting game (with the best odds for the player - when played correctly) in Las Vegas. I highly recommend it!!

This memoir of the French provincial capital of Aix-en-Provence is, as the author tells us, "my picture, my map, of a place and therefore of myself...just as much of its reality is based on my own shadows, my inventions." M.F.K. Fisher scans the centuries to reveal the ancient sources that clarify the Marseille of today and the indestructible nature of its people A delightful journey filtered through the senses of a profound writer.

No, this book is not for someone who wants lively light entertainment, and it is not a 'travel' book. What it is is a lovely woven cloth of experience and observation. It's subtle and beautiful.

                  2 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2006-01-18

I have been greatly been disappointed in this book. I am a total Francophile and soak up just about any book on life in southern France, be it travelogue, novel, cultural study, etc. I have been reading Map of Another Town over the past few months and it's been a struggle. MFK Fisher goes into painfully boring and unnecessary detail on the most insignificant things, like having to go back and forth between offices and buildings while seeking the appropriate vaccinations for a trip to Africa, and what she thinks of every little thing related to the process. She'll devote pages and pages to experiences that have nothing to do with live in Aix-en-Provence and its environs -- it's a map of her own head, where she spends too much time. She finds herself rather fascinating, but I found her self-centered.

I thought it would be interesting to read about life there in the 1950s and 1960s, but again, the book is less a cultural study than autobiographical ramblings (if you can find it, Village in the Vaucluse, a Laurence Wylie cultural study first written in 1957 and updated in 1967 and 1974, is fascinating and was one of my college texts for a French culture course -- 5 stars plus.). I probably will not even bother with A Considerable Town and will finish Map of Another Town only because I feel like I should.

If you are considering this book because life in southern France fascinates you, I would instead recommend any of the Peter Mayle books (not jumping on the bandwagon here; I've read his books from the beginning and own all of them, and his writing style is absolutely delightful and endearing, even when he's being a snob), Yvone Lenard, etc. In fact, Peter Mayle's books so charmingly describe Provence that they serve as a guidebook to the best the region has to offer, so you can visualize and plan your own trip. With his writing style, it feels like you're along for the trip, whereas with MFK Fisher, you wonder when you're going to get there.

5 out of 5 stars Memoir of a short time in the life of a unique woman.......2003-07-24

MFK Fisher holds a special place in the hearts of all `foodie' Americans. She was perhaps the 1st person to see the sense of writing food-based literary books and articles, and of course it's now a genre unto itself. But few have rivaled her beautiful prose, and I recall reading that she once said she considered it a day well-lived if she'd managed to compose one perfect sentence. To consider her just a food writer is to do her an injustice; she is a writer, first and foremost, who happens, sometimes, to write about food.
Two Towns in Provence is a memoir of the years she spent in France, after her divorce from her 3rd husband, with her two young daughters. The two towns in question are Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. Aix is full of artists, eccentrics, gardens, and wonderful food. Marseille is grittier, less beautiful, but still, oh, the food! Fisher's talent, besides the obvious ones of food appreciation, cooking, and writing spectacularly crystalline prose, is her ability to accept life at face value, adapt, and make the best of situations, managing to observe closely and have a wonderful time in the process.
Highest recommendation for all Francophiles, cooks, and lovers of memoirs and superior writing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent writing rich detail..........2000-08-19

M.F.K. Fisher wrote a number of books covering various aspects of food, cooking, travel, and her own autobiography. She moved to France before WWII with her then husband Fisher. Her birth name was Mary Frances Kennedy and she was raised in Whittier California. She kept Fisher as a last name throughout her life although she divorced him for a man who became the love of her life and her second husband. He suffered from an ailment (result of a wound he sustained in WWI I believe)the pain of which eventually caused him to end his own life. She remarried a third time, had two little girls and divorced her third husband. Following the divorce, she took the two girls and went to live in southern France -- a place she knew and loved deeply. "Two Towns..." picks up her autobiography at this point.

The "two towns" were orginally published as "Map of Another Town" and "A Considerable Town". The first book is about Aix-en-Provence founded more than two thousand years ago by Roman invaders. Gaius Marius and Julius Caesar both spent time in Aix and Roman remains can be found everywhere. Many artists have found Aix irresistable.

Fisher lived in Aix for a time and her writing concerns everyday events -- the view from the apartment, the habits of the landlady, shopping, food preparation, eating meals cooked by others, school days for the girls. What makes the book extraordinary is Fisher's descriptive writing about the exotic setting composed of beautiful architecture, gardens, fountains, passageways and gates and excentric people. I prefer Fisher's writing to that of more recently relocated authors who have moved to Provence and record their struggles to overcome their surroundings. Fisher moved to Provence and accepted it.

"A Considerable Town" is about Marseille in the 1950's. Considered a dangerous place for centuries, Marseille has always a source of interest. MFK Fisher is not as fond of Marseille as she was of other places in France, but she went there anyway, and writes objectively. She says Marseille has a reputation of being a "world capital for dope, whores, and street violence." She considers this information a bit erroneous and goes on to write a more balanced account. She says others have used words such as "apart, unique, unusual" but these words are not enough. She says she keeps returning for "a week, ten days, many weeks or a month" and searches for the reasons why the city attacts her. She says the city is very old, has an infantile enjoyment of playing.

I found this book so enjoyable, I am ordering the hard cover. I recommend it to anyone who loves France.

                      Book Description

In recent years John Bellamy Foster has emerged as a leading theorist of the Marxist perspective on ecology. His seminal book Marx's Ecology (Monthly Review Press, 2000) discusses the place of ecological issues within the intellectual history of Marxism and on the philosophical foundations of a Marxist ecology, and has become a major point of reference in ecological debates. This historical and philosophical focus is now supplemented by more directly political engagement in his new book, Ecology against Capitalism. In a broad-ranging treatment of contemporary ecological politics, Foster deals with such issues as pollution, sustainable development, technological responses to environmental crisis, population growth, soil fertility, the preservation of ancient forests, and the "new economy" of the Internet age.

Foster's introduction sets out the unifying themes of these essays enabling the reader to draw from them a consolidated approach to a rapidly-expanding field of debate which is of critical importance in our times.

Within these debates on the politics of ecology, Foster's work develops an important and distinctive perspective. Where many of these debates assume a basic divergence of "red" and "green" issues, and are concerned with the exact terms of a trade-off between them, Foster argues that Marxism properly understood already provides the framework within which ecological questions are best approached. This perspective is advanced here in accessible and concrete form, taking account of the major positions in contemporary ecological debate.

5 out of 5 stars A Positive Alternative to Capitalism.......2002-11-17

John Bellamy Foster's "Ecology Against Capitalism" is a collection of essays that addresses some of the various aspects of capitalism's crisis of accumulation and the environment. Importantly, the author compares and contrasts the failures of the ecological economics model with the more promising ecosocialist paradigm, arguing that the latter is humanity's best chance to create a stable, healthy and humane world.

I haven't read any other books by Foster, but it is hard to imagine a better effort. This powerful little book is written with passion, clarity and purpose. Foster seems to pack more meaning in 170 pages than others who use twice the space. Consequently one can imagine the book serving as an excellent supplemental textbook for students who may be interested in rapidly developing their critical thinking skills.

Many of the articles discuss how the growth of capitalism is leading to environmental collapse. Foster shows that assigning market values to nature and introducting relatively less harmful technologies will not end the destruction. Rather, these so-called Green Economics solutions will merely lead to a "more efficient exploitation of the environment" (pg. 58) by the capital markets.

Foster strongly believes that a moral element is at play. The "higher immorality" of the bourgeoise class is implicit in its accumulation of material goods and profits at the expense of the poor and the environment; but it is also sometimes explicitly stated, such as in Lawrence Summers' infamous World Bank memo where a policy of exporting pollution to poor countries was rationalized because the economies are less developed there.

In my opinion, one of the best passages on the issue of morality concerned Foster's devastating critique of Malthus, who was one of the original apologists for the privileged class. Foster brilliantly turns the cult of Malthusianism on its head by arguing that the environmental crisis is a result of overconsumption by the rich, not the poor. Foster points out that neo-Malthusianism remains influential within neoliberal thought and argues forcefully that it must end if we are to ever stop deluding ourselves and get to work on real solutions to the crisis.

Foster's personal experiences with the timber industry conflicts in the Pacific Northwest are related in the book's lengthiest essay. The author discusses the limits of achieveing environmental sustainability without class struggle and the support of labor. Interestingly, Foster demonstrates the practical value of ecosocialist theory by articulating a workable solution that went beyond the rhetoric of "jobs versus logs". Perhaps not surpisingly, the author tells us that the promising proposal was quashed by a Bush Sr. administration official in favor of a pro-industry solution.

Ultimately, Foster shows that an ecosocialist society that values democracy, community and nature can indeed create "a positive, not just a negative, alternative to capitalism" (pg. 132). I urge you to read this outstanding book.

5 out of 5 stars An Ecology without Capitalism?.......2002-06-06

In this new book John Bellamy Foster has assembled a great deal of evidence (in a dozen chapters written and published over the last decade) that the earth's ecology is incompatible with capitalism. But is there an alternative?

Foster says: "A shift toward a broad movement for ecological conversion and the creation of a sustainable society also means that that the partnership between the state and the capitalist class, which has always formed the most important linchpin of the capitalist system, must be loosened by degrees, as part of an overall social and environmental revolution. This partnership must be replaced, in the process of a radical transformation of the society, by a new partnership between democratized state power and popular power" (p. 132).

Reading just that far, one might conclude that such a loosening by degrees could be achieved within the two-party system in the United States or in other regimes where voters choose between conservatives and liberals. Certainly many environmental progressives (if that's not a contradiction) have opted to work within the existing political duopoly.

But the Ralph Nader campaigns of 1996 and 2000, and the concomitant rise of the Green Party, presage a different direction. It is one, however, which will require both a deeper and more ecological understanding of the incompatibility of ecosystems with a profit system, and a more radical politics than the market-regulation offered by the Green Party platform and Citizen Nader's narrower planks.

Foster goes on to say: "Such a shift requires revolutionary change that must be more than simply a rejection of capitalist methods of accumulation and their effects on people and the environment. Socialism -- as a positive, not just a negative, alternative to capitalism -- remains essential to the conversion process, because its broad commitment to worldwide egalitarian change reflects an understanding of 'how the needs of the various communities can be fit together in a way that leaves nobody out, and that also satisfies global environmental requirements'."

In his major opus, Marx's Ecology (2000), Foster showed Marx's development of an ecological perspective that drew from the latest natural science discoveries. These included the discovery of the micro metabolic cycles by the cell theorists, Theodor Schwann and Matthias Schleiden, which Marx linked with the discovery of the grand metabolic cycles of earth and sky by the agrochemist Justus von Liebig. To this one would have to add the influence on Marx of Karl Fraas, an important figure in forest ecology neglected by Foster and most scholars in this country.

Marx's resulting awareness of the ecological care necessary to plan a sustainable socialism was ignored, however, by the Soviet Union under Stalin, as Foster showed, despite profound contributions by scientists like Vladimir I. Vernadsky, whose 1924 book, The Biosphere (1998), has become an internationally-recognized classic of ecology. Critical radicals today, and particularly those in the ecosocialism paradigm, reject the lack of democracy and bureaucratic centralism of such regimes, which
played a key role in the adoption of policies that degraded the environment.

Nevertheless, Foster argues, "Within a socialist framework, the sources of the largest-scale and most severe environmental destruction could be dealt with head-on, in a way that has already shown itself to be beyond the capacity -- not to say against the interests -- of capital."

Foster acknowledges a range of collaborators and rivals in the crafting of his new book. Most important is Paul Burkett, whose
Marx and Nature: A Red and Green Perspective (1999) finally clarified the distinction between the human use of nature and the exploitation of the exchange value of commodities. Foster also cites James O'Connor, author of Natural Causes (1998)as showing that "While there are many variations in economic growth theory, all presuppose that capitalism cannot stand still...that it must 'accumulate or die,' in Marx's words" (p. 80).

Although Foster's new book appeared at the same time as Joel Kovel's The Enemy of Nature (2002), which has the same basic theme, the books are quite different. Foster's collection of articles is intended to deal with specifics, it is "an attempt to intervene directly in contemporary political-economic debates on capitalism and the environment..." (p. 7). Kovel's book is actually an intervention into eco-politics and provides a sustained exploration of Ecosocialism as compared and contrasted with Deep Ecology, Bioregionalism, Anarchist Social Ecology, and particularly with Populism and variants of small-business capitalism.

If Foster's new book is focused on what needs to be undone in an ecological and economic conversion, Kovel's is much more a manual of what needs to be done to build the alternative to capitalism. The books actually complement each other, and both are essential tools for the ecological activist and the open-minded citizen.

                        Book Description

This book examines why some international environmental regimes succeed while others fail. Confronting theory with evidence, and combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, it compares fourteen case studies of international regimes. It considers what effectiveness in a regime would look like, what factors might contribute to effectiveness, and how to measure the variables. It determines that environmental regimes actually do better than the collective model of the book predicts.

The effective regimes examined involve the End of Dumping in the North Sea, Sea Dumping of Low-Level Radioactive Waste, Management of Tuna Fisheries in the Pacific, and the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol on Ozone Layer Depletion. Mixed-performance regimes include Land-Based Pollution Control in the North Sea, the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, Satellite Telecommunication, and Management of High Seas Salmon in the North Pacific. Ineffective regimes are the Mediterranean Action Plan, Oil Pollution from Ships at Sea, International Trade in Endangered Species, the International Whaling Commission, and the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.
