Book Description

Five years after Diana's death, Prince William and his brother Prince Harry -- "the heir and the spare," as Fleet Street dubbed them -- are the planet's two most photographed, written-about, and speculated-about young men. People everywhere feel an intense affection for Wills and Harry, and wonder if, without their mother to guide them, they are withering or flourishing in the House of Windsor.

In this much anticipated sequel to his New York Times #1 bestseller The Day Diana Died, Christopher Andersen draws on important sources -- many of whom have agreed to speak here for the first time -- to paint this sympathetic, yet often startling portrait of William and Harry, and reveal how their mother remains a constant presence in their lives.

Here is a story of a mother who died too young, and the beloved sons who are her living legacy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars About the boys and more..............2007-05-27

This is a great book, but like other reviews I agree it focuses less on the boys. It paints the pictures of Diana's pain. It does give you some good insight to the boys lives, and is very interesting. It's shocking, and sad as well.
It does speak to the realtionship of Diana and Charles, and Camilla as well. It also questions the paternity of Harry.
Diana led a fascinating and yet tragic life. It speaks to the events that occured during her untimely death as well.
There are many books about Diana, and this is a good one to read.

this is a great book i found so much information about diana charles and the boys and everything that went on behind closed doors it will make you cry i promise a+++++++++

3 out of 5 stars DIANAS WOES.......2006-07-28

I really liked this book but it talked more about Diana and Charles Marriage and Diana's childhood than the boys. It was good but I think that it should have talked more about the boys than their marital woes and about members of the royal family. If it didn't emphasize so much on the royal family and the maritial woes, and talked more about the boys, it would have been a better book. Certain parts of this book was similiar to Diana by Andrew Morton

2 out of 5 stars To Much Re-hashing; Not Enough About the Boys.......2006-04-16

Frankly, I'm tired of the re-play concerning Diana's alleged antics. If I read one more time about her alleged comments to Tiggy or her alleged harassment phone calls to Oliver Hoare's house, I think I'll scream.
Actually more is written about Charles and Diana in this book than either William or Harry, until the later chapters then we hear about Wills in Eaton, his gap year and alleged romances. We also learn both boys are "coping" remarkably well with Diana's sudden death. And their approval rating of Mrs. BP assuming the public role as Papa's companion so soon after Diana's death, is troubling or at least to me it was.
Then too, Harry is kept in the shadows even by the author. While everyone within the system admits to feeling sorry for Harry (as the spare), no one really tries to change the status quo. Instead they treat Harry much the way Princess Margret was---rather with indifference.
While William is treated with interest and respect--even by the queen. Very sad situation for Harry. My heart goes out to him.
William's alleged romantic antics are troubling. He did not appear concerned with his steamy behavior being caught on video tape at a bar and the possibility of the press publishing pictures. And I was distressed at the manner he subjected his body guards.
Tending to the heir and the spare is probably going to make the police protection squad old before their time.

2 out of 5 stars Princess Di and the Younger Men in Her Life.......2006-01-06

Anderson's book is 342 pages in length and it's a decent primer for those who know very little about the sons of the world's most famous princess. Anderson stays focused on the boys, for the duration of the book, talking about the relationship between William and Harry and the important people who influence them.

There are some new tidbits of information in this book that I hadn't heard before, like the strained relationship between William and Harry, and Camilla Parker Bowles, the woman who was instrumental in the breakup of Prince Charles and the boy's mother. But other than this, there isn't a whole lot of new information to be found in this book. Most readers already know about the cold indifference on the part of the Queen and her husband, when Diana was killed; the incorrigible antics of the young Prince William; the boy's love of blondes; etc. For the most part, Anderson just rehashes old news.

One other thing I didn't like about this book was the way Anderson wrote it, in "snips". Basically, Anderson just keeps pointing out little facts and quotes from the members of the royal family, jumping from one incident to another. When I read a book that's supposed to be a biography, I prefer something that digs in a little deeper into the lives of the people whom the book is written about. I don't care so much about hearing silly quotes made by prince Harry while fox hunting. I would rather hear more information about the boys thoughts, feelings, etc. to get a better feel for what makes William and Harry tick. I don't think Anderson did a good job in this area.

Another thing that bothers me is the fact that Anderson doesn't even bother to title his chapters. There are eight of them, but they are unnamed. Given the way the book is arranged, with so many "snips", I assume that Anderson had a difficult time deciding on titles for the chapters, so he just left them out completely. If Anderson had focused more on specific topics, he would have had no problem coming up with chapter titles.

So, my bottom- line on this book is that it's not that great or that memorable. It might be interesting to those who like to read about the royal family. But for the rest of us, it's a mediocre work of non- fiction.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of an Anti-Hero.......2000-08-23

This is an excellent book and very well written. It is the story of an anti-heroine who is easy to admire, but very difficult to like. My children disliked Street's arrogance, her disdain for training and the negative attitude that robbed her of the complete success that could have followed her natural courage and abilities. It is nevertheless a great example to show young women how to believe in themselves, to persevere in the face of setbacks, and the importance of courage. The author did an excellent job of portraying how very far Street could have gone if she had accompanied her courage with judgement, and her confidence with kindness. It was particularly inspiring to my daughters.

5 out of 5 stars We now ski, for the first time!.......1998-12-24

After reading this inspiring book, we have found courage to shred the slopes ourselves. The author obviously has a true love of skiing himself, and we think he is way overdue to write a companion piece on Hillary Lind, and to check out the wild slopes of Alaska. We look forward to reading future books from this outstanding children's author! Kudos from Juneau!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic overview of Marlon Brando's life and career!.......1998-09-18

What an incredible book...I am not usually in the habit of buying books, but I couldn't resist when I saw the cover!! I am a huge Marlon Brando fan...an understatement to say the least. I have been hooked since I first watched "A Streetcar Named Desire." I don't think that there has been a more beautiful actor (and that even includes Paul Newman!) I have managed to get my hands on every Brando movie possible!! He had more than just a beautiful face though; there was a presence about him that was just mesmorizing! I get very upset when people speak of Brando's wasted talent, or what a sad joke his life has become..........we will always have his films and portraits to cherish! As it was stated in his biography, the world definitely "heard" from Marlon Brando!

The was great and essential for every Changeling player. Dive into the Middle Kingdom and learn the secrets of the exotic and enigmatic Shinma, the Kithian native to the East. These exiled servants of the August Personage of Jade. Their hatred of the Wan Xian, their powers to control the elements known as Wu Tan. From the noble and regal Kamuii to the humane and heroic Hiriyanu the stories are endless. However I was unable to give 5 stars to the books since it lacked explicit infomation and did not cover all questions a Changeling Player may have and complications STs may find with this lack of info. However, it's worth it! ; )

5 out of 5 stars A must read for training and presentations!.......2007-09-09

Robert Jolles describes all of the steps in running your own workshops and seminars or working in the training department. Writing your own book. Developing a process of training that helps the trainer and the audience. Visual aid management. Trainee evaluation. All of the steps are in a simple, easy to read book. There are also parts of the book that will help develop and improve skills for sales professionals.

        5 out of 5 stars to-the-point and well structured.......2007-03-12

The book is practical, clear and well written. The writer is clearly very experienced in the field. I like his matter of fact approach with a dry sense of humour.

1 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as the title suggests.......2006-07-05

I bought this book hoping to learn one new thing - I don't want 'tricks' or 'secrets' and I don't need to impress anyone - just facilitate seminars which are effective and enjoyable for the participants. I searched for an idea, process or new way of thinking that I could use, modify and apply in my own work. Sadly, it wasn't there for me. The style and content is not consistent with the title. The style is over-confident - the "know-it-all" style, characteristic of some American texts. The author presenting his opinions as fact. There's no doubt, no alternatives, just do it my way and it will be 'right'. Apart from this approach, some of the content is unhelpful at best. For example his comments (opinions) on how to prepare and use visuals in presentations reiterates the worst habits - more bullet points! As the title suggests the author is writing for people who already know something about this well-worn subject, I would have appreciated buying something more original, less emphatic and better written. I regret buying it.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR SALES TRAINERS.......2004-05-19

From Joe Catal, author of the book "Telesales Tips From The Trenches".
As a national sales trainer who teaches people how to sell by phone, this book is an incredible read. There's a huge difference in telling someone a sales technique and teaching that technique. The book covers every situataion you may encounter and answers it on a psychological and practical level. I consider myself a very good public speaker and my evaluations normally come back as excellent. After reading this book, I had to rate my seminar a C+. If you've been struggling with your training this book will be a Godsend for you. I'd like to personally thank the author for teaching me the right way to give a seminar. This is a must read, and I'd be shocked if you read this book and your seminar didn't improve 100%.

        5 out of 5 stars The BEST!!!.......2004-01-26

After receiving this book I read it straight through in 2 days. Absolutely the best information for any trainer. Robert does a tremendous job of detailing just about everything a trainer needs to know. I highly recommend this book. I also purchased 2 other books at the same time - I probably won't even read those now. Get it - you WILL enjoy it!

          Book Description

Few of us will ever know the satisfaction of becoming number one in our professions; in music, the odds are astronomical. Musicologists tell us that in the ideal--or abstract--situation, an individual is genetically predisposed with a special gift, works at it from infancy, isolated from distractions, and denied any choice in the matter, until the discipline develops into an almost monomaniacal drive for perfection.

Buddy Rich achieved that perfection. The cost was very high.

This book was written in the form of a diary, researched by the author as he traveled with Buddy Rich to various cities in the US, Canada, England, and Scotland. It was not intended to be an authorative analysis of an eminent contemporary musician or a detailed biographical treatment. It is a selective account of representative events in the life of a musical genius, an attempt to reflect aspects of his complex personality and the role played by his family, friends, and enemies--real and imagined.

If you are - like I am - a drummer and dedicatedly interested in Mr Rich's personality, you might enjoy this professionally written book. But don't expect any nuts and bolts-talk or anything really relevant about his incredible playing abilities.

4 out of 5 stars an uneven but rewarding book.......2004-01-31

If you're a Buddy fan, you will, of course, read this book.
Minahan traveled and hung with Buddy during the 70's and 80's, taking notes and recording conversations with Buddy and those who were close to him during this time.
It seems like a book never materialized--even after Buddy's death in the late 80's--but Minahan finally decided in 2000 to take what he had and publish it anyway.
The book is uneven. It occasionally strays into areas that really have little to do with the subject--like the description of a day at Hugh Hefner's Chicago mansion (Buddy behaved with civility).
Nevertheless, the intense conversations with Buddy and the highly personal interviews with Marie Rich, Stanley Kay, and others who were close to him are intriguing and emotionally moving.
Minahan also avoids the gushing effusiveness toward his subject that marred Mel Torme's otherwise excellent Rich biography.
The book has been criticized for its focus on Buddy's "torment," but Minahan gives more-than-adequate support for his thesis. Buddy Rich was an incredibly complex person--a tortured genius who could exhibit the crudest vitriol and then turn around and be the most sensitive, loving person imaginable.
This book, in spite of its shortcomings, made me love Buddy even more. I really miss him.

5 out of 5 stars "TRAPS, THE DRUM WONDER".......2003-05-13

Terrific book about an exceptional talent! Don't know what the other reviewer is complaining about. I paid full price and don't regret it. (That's about eighteen bucks, with shipping.)
If you like Buddy's kind of music, you'll appreciate the book. In addition: you get plenty of insight into the man, what for me, was an added bonus: Buddy's devotion to friends and good-hearted nature (ie: the passage with Johnny Carson, Count Bassie, et al). Granted, he wasn't always the easiest guy to get along with, but what matters most is that he had a good heart, loved music and those who had the same love and dedication for it as he did. Reading the book made me want to take the albums out and play them, etc.

While I'm at it here, have wanted to express for years now how impressed I was with his daughter Cathy's version of the Sonny Bono tune entitled THE BEAT GOES ON. She does a terririfc cover of it on Buddy's Big Swing Face album recorded years ago. Cathy was only 12 and 1/2, mind you, at the time, and showed great promise in my opinion, and have wondered why she never pursued a singing career, etc.

There is so much more I could say about this book, but it would take too long. You get a good glimpse into what life must have been like for Buddy and his family in this country during the 30's and 40's, etc., (through various interviews with family members), what it was like for him as a gifted kid at age 3 to be traveling the world as "Traps the Drum Wonder," all that.

The only thing that bothered me (and this is a relatively minor objection, if you can even call it that) is the awful photo of Buddy Rich used for the cover, as someone else mentioned as well. I mean, couldn't they have found something more flattering? I think the legendary Buddy Rich deserves better.

All in all: nice job, Mr. Minahan. Thank you.

          1 out of 5 stars Unfortunate.......2002-12-30

The choice of this author to take his unedited preliminary notes started for a contemplated book project and publish them as a finished product is unfortunate.

To suggest this apparently random collection of third-party unverified information has anything to do with a supposed "Torment" of Buddy Rich is silly.

Whatever this document may be, it is not a completed work of any kind and certainly would never be published by any other than this author's vanity press.

For those of us blessed to take unconstrained joy from the life and music Buddy Rich poured, these dregs must be tasted. But for those sane in this life, stay away.

4 out of 5 stars The Buddy Rich I Knew.......2002-10-16

Books about musicians can never tell the story that the musician tells through music, especially in Jazz. I enjoyed the book, even though it's a bit rough around the edges, but I always enjoy books about Jazz masters. Worlds Greatest Drummer? Buddy was a great one but not the greatest. Just listen to a recording from the late 1950's, Rich vs. Roach, where Max Roach just blows him away head to head. That said, I love Buddy's work. His solo on The Monster with the JATP group is amazing. Buddy was a Real Character and one of the most popular guests ever on the old Carson Tonight Show.
I went to a concert with his big band of the late 'Seventies at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. It was a two show gig and Buddy found out the Guthrie had somehow managed to sell tickets to only one show. What does Buddy do? He invited the crowd to stay on, had an intermission and then played a completely different second set! I could swear the band never knew what tune he was going to call next. That was one of the most disciplined big bands I have ever heard. Maybe not the Worlds Greatest Drummer but for sure one of the Worlds Greatest Shows.

This is a wonderful work by an Englishman who not only lived through and participated in WWIIl, but also became a master at modeling that world. Roy shows you all his tricks, such as creating your own molds, building ruins, detailing and weathering, and subject selection. The book is chocked full of great color photos, and includes many step-by-step guides on the various projects. You will get a lot of great ideas in this book, and even an experienced old pro like me will find many new useable tips. The books is handsome, well written, and highly informative... overall, quite enjoyable, and certainly the best diorama building book in my large library!

            Book Description

By using the core insights of the constructivist approach in International Relations, this book analyzes the foreign policy behavior of Turkey. It argues that throughout its modern history, Turkey's foreign policy has been affected by its Western identity created in the years following the War of Independence.

            5 out of 5 stars great work.......2006-11-04

I read this book after I read Prof. Bozdaglioglu's PhD thesis. It is very rare that a dissertation turns into a book almost as is. Only this shows that it is a great work. Prof. Bozdaglioglu explains not only how identity in foreign policy is important and can be understood but also gives us a depth understanding of turkish foreign policy, many events that look contradictory and rather irrational, find a sound explanation in his analysis. As a student of IR, I found this book very easy to read. One of the very good works of constructivist approach even for those who do not fall into the constructivist group can benefit from this study.

                Book Description

As a home to more than 180 million Muslims, Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. However, the identity of the Indonesian state has never been defined in terms of Islam. In fact, tension in hte relationship between Islam and hte state has been evident since Indonesia's independence in August 1945 and this tension stems from the dilemma of a dual state identity as Indonesia defines itself as neither theocratic nor secular. This makes the role of Islam in Indonesian politics and foreign policy a complex one.
This work examines the origins of dual state identity and how it has affected the political dynamics in Indonesia, both in domestic and foreign policy. Although Islam is the majority religion in Indonesia, this book suggests tha contrary to what might be expected, Islam has not played a dominant role in the country's post-independent politics and policy making. However, sicne the fall of military-backed Suharto's government in May 1998, Islam has become a potent political force in Indonesia. With the revival of Islam, politics and policy-making in Indonesia has increasingly been subject to influences from political Islam. This book considers for hte first time whenter such influence has also been exerted upon the coutnry's foreign policy. Rizal Sukma suggests that the role of Islam in foreignpolicy has always been as secondary one, arguing that the dilemma of dual identity and domestic weaknesses set the limits within which Islam can be expressed in foreign policy.
This book will provide a useful resource to all those with an interest in the role of Islam in International Politics as well as students of Asian and Religious studies.

                  Book Description

This paper presents a study of Japan's international role with a special focus on its historical evolution. To that end, the following three pillars lay the necessary theoretical foundations: one, the notions of historical and political identity and a discussion of the ambivalent shapes they have taken in Japan; two, the regional context, an examination of Japan's situation with respect to Asian history as a whole, and finally, the "civilian power" concept as defined by Hanns W. Maull.

                      Book Description

In the twenty-first century, water will be the most critical resource, not oil. In Asia, many local sources of water have already been developed, leaving those shared by two or more countries. Asian International Waters, the fourth book in the Water Resources Management Series, is a collection
of ten papers detailing the potential for development of three major Asian rivers--Ganges-Brahmaputra, Mekong, and Salween. According to the contributors, if these rivers are developed on a sustainable basis, benefits to the people of the area will be enormous, but unoptimal development could cause
serious regional tension. The issues and questions raised will be of interest to anyone who works in international relations or water management, including policy makers.
