For those interested in a personal slide show of the late Princess of Wales, royal commentator Anthony Holden's full-color photo essay, with more than 150 images from Diana's life, might be the closest you'll get. Thick, glossy, and laden with moving quotes from her famous, eclectic mix of friends--Henry Kissinger, Elton John, and Mother Teresa, among others--Her Life & Her Legacy is a polished and engaging tribute to the princess. Said Nelson Mandela: "She was an ambassador for victims of landmines, war orphans, the sick and needy throughout the world. She was undoubtedly one of the best ambassadors of Great Britain."

Book Description

The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, moved the entire world. This book is dedicated to her memory. Inspired by the universal outpouring of grief, it is offered as a tribute to her grace, wit and beauty, and as testimony to her remarkable compassion. Here was a royal icon who stepped from the gilded picture frame to reach out and embrace the sick and the maimed, the lonely victims of war and of disease. And who herself knew grief: the desolation of a broken marriage and betrayal, the anguish of separation from her children, the fear of being pursued and knowing that her life would never be her own again.

There are more than 150 photographs and text by Anthony Holden illuminating the key moments of her thirty-six years of hope, despair, devotion and hope again.

Holden was a friend of the Princess and met privately with her shortly before the tragedy in Paris. He brings a uniquely informed perspective to this new account of her life. He writes of her desertion by her mother, her courtship and royal marriage, her disillusionment with the marriage, her selfless pursuit of often unpopular causes, her qualities as a mother, her beauty and charisma and the powerful influence she had begun to exert on political and religious leaders around the world.

The photographs reflect the great themes that characterized Diana's life, but also her relationship with the camera, and with the media in their various aspects; her love of dance and of the joys of life in general; and much else. Above all, the pictures give us a record of her extraordinary capacity to convey by a touch and a look her love for the troubled individual and for humanity. In memory of Diana, Random House will donate half of its profits from the sales of this book  to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation-the leading national nonprofit foundation that funds and conducts critical pediatric AIDS research worldwide. It is a fitting memorial to one of the most appealing figures of our time.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful book for the Diana Collector.......2006-06-24

This is a wonderful picture book for the collector of Princess Diana memorabilia. The tribute from author William Holden was touching, with various tidbits regarding his relationship with the Princess. There was a nice mixing of color photos from her private and also her public life. The pictures in this book seem to bring out the laughter and charming spirit that was the Princess Diana.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely book.......2001-01-30

Anthony Holden has put together a lovely tribute to the late Princess of Wales. It's a well designed book, with nice pictures (from Diana's formal portraits to her everyday life) and engaging text. If you like to collect Princess Diana memorabilia, this book would make a fine addition to your bookcase.

5 out of 5 stars A poignant book that captures many facets of Diana's life.......1998-04-07

This book is one of the best I have seen that respectfully looks at Diana's life and her impact on others. Using Diana's own words, quotes from others who knew her, and expressive photographs, the author captures the many facets of Diana's life that made her so unique. Highly recommended.

Book Description

As the budding baseball superstar for the Boston Red Sox in 1967, Tony Conigliaro became the youngest major league player to hit 100 home runs, a record he still holds. He was on his way to becoming baseball's new hero until, after three short years, he was struck in the head by an errant pitch that nearly killed him. Because the blow damaged his keen eyesight, Tony's baseball career suddenly ended. In Tony C: The Triumph and Tragedy of Tony Conigliaro, author David Cataneo writes of the tragic end to Tony C's baseball career, and his triumph over losing his dreams by becoming a sportscaster on the west coast.

Tony seemed to be on top again with a good job, good looks, and good friends. But tragedy struck again in 1982 when Tony, only 37, suffered a massive heart attack that damaged his brain and confined him to a wheelchair. Tony Conigliaro's life seems to have been full of tragedy and Tony C: The Triumph and Tragedy of Tony Conigliaro is filled with remembrances from Tony's family, friends, and former Red Sox teammates. This extensively researched book, which includes rare photographs, provides the intimate details of Conigliaro's life, both on and off the baseball field. Tony C: The Triumph and Tragedy of Tony Conigliaro is a powerful human drama that will leave you with a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye.

5 out of 5 stars The Red Sox should retire Tony"s #25-just read the book........2002-04-15

This is a great book about Tony C. It shows both his strengths as a person and some of his weak spots, which makes this book a very true and real story.
It's a great history of the Red Sox when Tony C. played. It shows the true guts, determination, courage and love for the Red Sox that Tony C. had. No player in any sport has made such an effort to comeback. And, this book captures it all.
The Red Sox should retire his number -- just read the book it supports retiring #25.
Billy Conigliaro's quote sums up how i feel about Tony C. "I will always remember Tony C. as a fighter, a clutch hitter, warm to his fans. He was a brother who made me proud."
Tony thank you so much for all the wonderful memories as a Red Sox player. You have given me the strength to fight my own battles in life. I hope that someone makes a movie from this book.

5 out of 5 stars My reason for this book..........2000-03-03

I began work on this book in 1994...I'm glad to see that the public has received this book well. It is a fine tribute to a dashing young ballplayer for whom this book was a labor of love...Here's to you, Tony!

5 out of 5 stars The Life of A Boyhood Idol.......2000-01-18

Dave Cantaneo gives this young fan a second chance to remember a boyhood idol through this very insightful book about the tragic figure thatb inspired thousands of boys my age. The ultimate complement to any baseball player when I grew up was that everyone wanted his baseball card and everyone wanted to "be" the player during pickup games. These were simple times when players were loyal to teams and teams were loyal to fans. Everyone wanted to be Tony C, and since he was just a teenager joining the Red Sox, all of my buddies and I idolized him immediately. This book permits us the opportunity to spend a few hours with a real sports idol. Tony C was to Red Sox fans what the Beatles were to American rock and roll lovers--- except he was right here. Thanks for the book, David.

5 out of 5 stars One Man We'll never forget.......1999-04-07

I am a 12 year old kid and have read the book Tony C. I never watched him play on t.v, and I haven't heard about him until 1991 when i watched a quick clip on sportscenter about him. I couldn't quite remember his name and wanted to find out more about him as I searched for 7 years just to find the guy's name. I came close to finding his name as my friend next door had a model of him, but unfortunately his dog knocked it down earlier and the bottom of the model was broken off and we didn't know his name. Thats when i finally found this book at a local bookstore. This book takes you in depth of his short lifetime. This book tought a lesson to me and i feel that I never give up anymore in anything that i do (like him) This book takes you from his good days in the minors to his excellent early years in the majors until that awful august night. The night when he was struck by the pitch that put him out of baseball. That is where i will end because i don't want to tell everyone the untold, but i do highly reccomend this book. It changed the way i look at everything in life.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source for background information of Tony C........1998-08-03

Understand that this review comes from a thirty- six year old lifelong Red Sox fan, who never saw Tony Conigliaro play before the infamous beaning (and who wasn't subjected to the Red Sox of the early sixties). I went to my first Red Sox game as an eight year old boy in 1970, with my twenty- something aunt who got tickets to see the California Angels, because Tony Conigliaro was on the roster. I was thirteen when Tony electrified the Boston fans early in the magical 1975 season. Because of my aunt's infatuation with Tony C., I have always been intrigued with his story and enthusiastically picked up this book to learn more. The early biographical information was compre- hensive and, although clearly not unbiased, detailed enough to let the reader make their own opinions regarding Tony's immature social values and his arrogant "super jock" attitude. I appreciated the anecdotal history of Tony's minor league and early major league career, especially his rocky ! relationship with the Red Sox other star of the era, Carl Yastrzemski.

The emotional struggles of Tony's attempted come- back following the beaning were also well reported. The book followed Tony's career beyond baseball, and honestly reported the heartache of a shortened athletic career and the struggle to then fit into a traditional career.

I would recommend the book as an above average sports biography or an excellent real life human drama. I think the story provides lessons for young men and is heart-wrenching story that would interest young women as well.

        Book Description

Director Fred Zinnemann was one of the most honored and revered directors of Hollywood's golden age. Peter Ustinov said, "Working with him was a permanent lesson in integrity." Zinnemann will always be remembered for such award-winning classics as High Noon, From Here to Eternity and A Man for All Seasons, and for his direction of such stars as Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Rod Steiger, Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Mitchum, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep and Sean Connery. Above all, he deserves to be appreciated for raising the intelligence of popular cinema, making individualist dramas of conscience that could appeal to mass audiences without condescending to them and without compromising the director's vision.

This book, the first single-author survey of Zinnemann's career, draws on the author's personal interviews with Zinnemann and reveals the coherence and subtlety of the director's work. The first part of the book deals with Zinnemann's struggle to make films of his own choosing in his own way, up to his breakthrough with The Search. The remainder of the text discusses Zinnemann's post-Search films according to major themes, including the ravages of war, the "sovereignty of selfhood," character as destiny, the outsider in society, and politics and the liberal conscience. A list of Zinnemann's awards is provided.

One of those who has been captivated by its charm is Tom Wolfe, and now he brings the characters to life through his carving. And more he shares his fascination with his readers. While many illustrators have brought their own imagination to Lewis Carroll's characters over the years, Tom goes back to the drawings of Sir John Tenniel for his inspiration. Of course he adds his own interpretation, giving them a unique personality that Carroll would have appreciated. As usual, Tom leads the carver through the project with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions, illustrated in full color photographs. This is a great book for the beginner and intermediate carvers, but the patterns and guidance Tom provides will be valued by all. , 250+ color photos, patterns, 8 1/2" x 11"

Few in popular music have had as varied a career and as lasting an impact as Bob Dylan, whose songs have entered the cultural consciousness in a way that some have called revolutionary. In this bold and comprehensive new study--the definitive guide to Dylan's work--author Larry David Smith explores the convergence of biography, artistic philosophy, and musical style in Bob Dylan's oeuvre. Making the case that "Bob Dylan" is actually a persona carefully crafted by its maker, the former Robert Zimmerman of Hibbing, Minnesota, Writing Dylan represents a new and authoritative contribution to the study of this key figure of the contemporary era. Having been granted unprecedented use of Dylan's own lyrics in his analysis, Smith interprets Dylan's narratives, characters, plots, and values, and reveals the artist's mission-oriented approach to art. Writing Dylan tackles each period of its subject's five-decade career, offering an inventive and unprecedented investigation of Dylan's artistic imperative, cultural significance, and song craft. The result is perhaps the most important work to date on this mercurial figure, whose songs have established a fully realized portrait of his personal mysteries.

No, I didn't misspell Dylan's name. The "Auteur" of "Writing Dylan: The Songs of a Lonesome Traveler" contends that Robert Zimmerman A.K.A Bob Dylan has developed multi-personas since leaving Hibbings, Minnesota. That is what accounts for the chameleon aspect of Dylan's ever changing music. If you're a serious Dylan fan, as I am, you'll burn right though this book, but if your just mildly interested in the man, music and his lyrics, this isn't the book for you. "I think I'll call it America and I just said; Good Luck".

5 out of 5 stars A song-by-song analysis to explore the lasting social and cultural implications of Dylan's works.......2005-11-06

Writing Dylan: The Songs Of A Lonesome Traveler provides a comprehensive, college-level study of Dylan's work, blending biography with music history and style analysis to consider how the image of Dylan was crafted by the real Bob Zimmerman. Both Dylan fans and students of modern music culture will find Writing Dylan more analytical and serious than most, using a song-by-song analysis to explore the lasting social and cultural implications of Dylan's works.

Winner, Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2002, Non-Fiction

"In badly constructed books, the reader doesn't care what happens on the next page. In well-constructed books, the reader can't wait to see what happens on the next page. This book is a rare, third kind: The reader dreads what will happen on the next page. Nevertheless, he feels compelled to read on. . . . McAllester takes the reader not only along the streets where atrocities have been committed but inside homes while they are happening. As is the case with many good reads, the power of such scenes comes from the order in which events are presented. First the author develops a character, then later in the book informs you about his fate. Or the author will describe how a family is brutalized, then describes, almost as an aside — in the course of a succeeding chapter about his own adventures in war-torn Kosovo — how he meets a traumatized eyewitness to the previous account. In this way, the reader becomes an observer not only of what was happening inside Kosovo during the NATO bombardment but of what was happening to McAllester himself and how he managed to assemble his book."
                  —Washington Post

"The power of McAllester's extraordinary book lies not in its comprehensiveness or its literary polish-though there are many brilliantly moving and perceptive passages-but in its shocking authenticity and deep moral concern. One gets the sense that he risked his life not simply to pursue a story, timely and important as it was, but because of the enormity of the evil being done and his conviction that, in a world of bland policy abstractions, what happened in those days inside Kosovo had to be told."
                  —New Leader

"McAllester powerfully concludes that a sickening mixture of greed, ethnic hostility, and wartime nihilism has displaced the healing power for love and reconciliation for the forseeable future. One of the most thoughtful accounts of the conflict in Kosovo to date conveyed with taut journalistic clarity that should ensure the book a broad range of readers."
                  —Kirkus, Starred Review

"This account is not of the Â`virtual warÂ' that Westerners saw on their television screens but of the real effects on people who consider the ravaged area home."
                  —Library Journal, Starred Review

"McAllester's spare, understated prose is potent as is his exploration of the human side of geopolitics and war."
                  —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"In a twist that took McAllester as much by surprise as it will the reader, it appears that Isa Bala lived in that ill-defined world too, a world where people make deals and concessions just to survive another day. Perhaps he believed that through such compromises, his family would be safe. if so, he was tragically wrong."
                  —Sunday Telegraph (London)

" Beyond the Mountains of the Damned is a gripping, if depressing, account of what McAllester found among the ruins. . . . There is no bravado. . . . He offers vivid thumbnail sketches of Kosovar warriors in the field."
                  — Newsday

"McAllester offers us the kind of specific detail that we need to make other people's lives human to us. Even more importantly, he tells us how it is to be the oppressor, or at least one of the minions of the oppressors"
                  —American Book Review

For every survivor of a crime, there is a criminal who forces his way into the victim's thoughts long after the act has been committed.

Reporters weren't allowed into Kosovo during the war without the permission of the Yugoslavian government but Matthew McAllester went anyway. In Beyond the Mountains of the Damned he tells the story of Pec, Kosovo's most destroyed city and the site of the earliest and worst atrocities of the war, through the lives of two men one Serb and one Kosovar. They had known each other, and been neighbors for years before one visited tragedy on the other. With a journalist's eye for detail McAllester asks the great question of war: What kind of men could devastate an entire city, killing whole families, and feel no sense of guilt? The answer lies in the culture of gangsterism and ethnic hatred that began with the collapse of Yugoslavia.

In March of 1999, the world watched thousands of Albanian refugees pour out of Kosovo, carrying stories of the terror that drove them from their homes. To Isa Bala and his family, Albanian Muslims who stayed in Pec during the NATO bombardment, the war in Kosovo was not about cruise missiles and geopolitics. It was about tiptoeing between survival and death in the town that saw the fiercest destruction, the most thorough eviction of the Albanian population and killings whose brutality demands explanation. To Nebojsa Minic and other Serb militiamen who ruled with murder, the conflict was about the exercise of power. Today they are alive and well in the new Yugoslavia. So unconcerned are they over the prospect of ever being held accountable for their crimes that they were willing to sit down over coffee after the war and discuss in detail their brief, brutal reign.

                  3 out of 5 stars A good journalistic account.......2004-05-08

McAllester has told the story of the war in Kosovo from his own perspective, as a journalist moving around the province without official sanction, and from the perspective of several Kosovars living in the city of Pec, like most of Kosovo a formerly Serbian city which is now primarily Albanian.

This story is effective. The violent finale is one the reader will see coming, but it remains shocking and powerful - these are real people and not fictional characters. McAllester has done a good job in describing the nightmare for ordinary people trying to live through war and ethnic cleansing. His account of his own experiences is less gripping, but reasonably interesting.

What he hasn't done is give a broader perspective. This book will tell you little about the Kosovo war, it's historical background, the breakup of Yugoslavia, or the war's outcome and significance. For those who are looking for a broader history of these events, this book is entirely inadequate.

1 out of 5 stars Reporter who forgot he's not the story.......2002-10-17

If you know anything about the region and recent events, this book will not enlighten you further. If you don't know anything about what went on in Kosovo, but would like to, "A Village Destroyed," by Fred Abrahms is a much better source. If you want to know what it's like to be a green newspaper reporter covering his first war this might be of some interest.

                  5 out of 5 stars chilling, gripping.......2002-03-28

I followed the war in Kosovo by reading about it in the newspapers. Then, like the bulk of Americans, pretty much forgot about it once it was over. But thanks to McAllester's exquisite, journalistic eye for detail, I feel as if I was actually there, a witness somehow to the atrocities that took place.
I have never had a particular interest in, or understanding of, the Balkans. Now after reading Beyong the Mountains of the Damned I hunger to know as much as possible.
This is no ordinary historical account. It is compelling and it stays with you after you are done. It reads with the breeze of fiction. What is petrifying, however, is that the characters are real and so are their stories. Chapter 12, The Killing, may be the most powerful chapter I've ever read in any book of this kind. While reading alone, I gasped and cried out loud.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with a particular interest in Kosovo and Serbia. But it is not only for those with a specialized interest in the region. It is for anyone who appreciates good writing and courageous reporting.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Journalistic Account.......2002-02-08

"Beyond the MOuntains of the Damned" is a journalistic account of the 1999 war in Kosovo told through both the eyes of journalist Matthew McAllester as well as several of the victims. The senseless brutality wrought upon the Muslim majority by the Serbs is well chronicled. The Kosovo "ethnic clensing" effort lacked the systemic nature of the Nazi genocide or even the occasional grand scale of some of the atrocities committed in Bosnia, but it was no less horrific. Albnaians had their homes burned and their villiages destroyed and many were shot as the Serbs attempted to drive them out.

Most of the action in the book takes place in and around the city of Pec, in eastern Kosovo. It was among the hardest hit regions in the territory. McAllester spent the three month war infiltrating Kosovo around in this region, though he never made to Pec until after the war because he would certainly have been killed by the Serbs. Meanwhile in Pec, an ALbanian butcher named Isa Bala and his family tried to stay inconspicuous and wait out the killing. Thier fate ultimately gives this story its gravity.

The only knock against the book is that for the most part it lacks a broader perspective. The political events surrounding the war and the history that led to Kosovo's destruction get some mention, but not enough for the avearge reader. Also, the larger war outside the Pec region gets only superficial coverage. Nevertheless, this is still a disturbing account of modern genocide and of the banality of man's evil.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely provocative and intelligent.......2001-05-02

This is a dense, sophisticated work on how to achieve a truly multicultural society. Intellectually, it seems to owe a great deal to Nietzsche/Heidegger/Foucault/Derrida, ect...(and though this is 'poly-sci,' it is even more about social theory). The style/tone of writing is, to my mind, not haughty (as another reviewer suggests). That said, there is clearly a good dose of anxiety and frustration between the lines. His style of prose recalls Judith Butler (in short, an intellectual prose at an altogether other level). However, in many ways, this book is a lot of posturing, and not much in the way of substance. (Explaining why...would take some time.) Essentially it amounts to this: this book is a call for all leftist movements to get their acts together- and to stop fighting with each other, and instead fight the 'center' (i.e. fundamentalism (religious and secular) in the US. It's an extreme condemnation of conformity (in the broadest sense) in our society. His end is a 'treeless' society (one where there are no fundamentalisms about), but instead 'bushes and grasses) (i.e. cultural identities flowering and self-governing simultaneously)(a pipe-dream if there ever was one!). The entire argument is cast in one of violence. He argues, for instance, that the quantity of sovereignty is constant, yet the quality of it is constantly contested/contestible (therefore...fight!). Given the fact that Connolly wrote it during 92-3, I should think he'd be sickened by now. The fact is that the experiments, reflections, and intelligence of people past *has*, in fact, produced sound bases upon which to build a society (i.e. social democracy and capitalism need 'fine tuning', not to be wholly discarded, for ex.). Questioning all knowledge is fine, but to incite a rejection of certain postulates, one better not only have a good reason, but more importantly, a good response...solution. But, then, if there are truly many shapes/forms to reason, how possibly could we come to agree?! There's a lot here, and in many ways, I suppose it amounts to more than a crack of the whip. Highly recommended for committed leftists (feeling like they could use a little inspiration). For me, construing our times as one marked by 'culture wars' is fine, but to write a manifesto of sorts with the 'diciest' (as Connolly would say) ethics possible (which are: a 'generous sensibility marked by forbearance'..and to say that all ethical forms are contingent to time and place- only), and to frame the entire argument in a language of violence, is simply irresponsible. If such a work were written in the USSR, God knows, Connolly would have been shown to the gulag long ago. Provocative indeed...enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to take.......1999-11-21

Those who don't consider themselves privy to the esoteric world of political theory (and even some of those who do) might want to pass on this book. Connolly is obviously a very smart fellow, and his attempt to develop a model that is conducive to pluralization is admirable, but the tone and pomposity of his writing is simply more than one should have to bear. I think a lot of potentially good arguments were lost on me because of the author's almost palpable contempt for anyone who dares differ with him. Who needs that abuse?

5 out of 5 stars The best book in political theory written in the 90s........1999-04-08

Provocative and powerful. Takes political theory in bold new directions as it thematizes the competing forces of pluralization and fundamentalization that characterize the post Cold-War era.

                    Book Description

Wallace Stegner once wrote, "We depend upon wilderness increasingly for relief from the termite life we have created." But that poses the question: if wilderness is our sole antidote, don't we risk loving it to death, using it up as we have used up so much else? How can great places teach us to live more fully within our daily lives? What might this mean for the health of wilderness itself?

Author and artist Teresa Jordan looks for the answers in four essays of apprenticeship, turning to the work of two previous students of Yosemite—naturalist John Muir and the painter Chiura Obata—as well as from those most elemental of teachers, the rocks and the trees.

Both Muir and Obata used painting and drawing as primary tools for understanding, and Jordan's own watercolors illuminate her journey of exploration. Like "Field Notes from the Grand Canyon," this second volume in Teresa Jordan's series of Sketchbook Expeditions uses superb full-color reproductions on special paper that approximates the look and feel of a watercolor sketchbook. This beautiful little volume makes an irresistible gift, to be read and re-read time and time again.
