Great Insight into Diana's Complex Brother.......2002-02-06
I bought this book in London; it is the same one that you feature, although it has a different ISBN number. Amazing details about a man that the world met when we lost his beloved sister. Beautiful pictures, including one with Diana, their mother, Earl Spencer, his wife, and their children -- talking casually on a street in London. Also features an amazing picture of Charles Spencer and Prince Charles (with Nelson Mandela) in Cape Town in November of 1997. Very historical photo!!
Book Description
In 1941, his first full season, Pete Reiser became the youngest batting champion in history, winning the NL title with a .343 average, and led the league in runs, doubles, triples, total bases, and slugging average. By July of 1942, the popular Brooklyn outfielder was flirting with .400 and was easily baseball's fastest rising star. But a jarring collision with the outfield wall in St. Louis sent his season into a tailspin. After spending the next three years in the Army, he would come back to lead the league in stolen bases, battling dizziness and headaches throughout the season. Ten more collisions with the outfield walleach adding a shoulder separation, muscle tear, fracture, contusion, or concussion to his long list of injurieswould make him a frequent visitor to the disabled list and keep Reiser from ever again playing a full season.
This biography provides the full story on Reiser, with special emphasis given to the highlights of Reiser's playing days and the factors that kept him from fulfilling his enormous potential. In addition, the author discusses the broader situation of major league baseball, including Jackie Robinson's entrance on the National League scene, league-jumping and the subsequent blackballing of players, and the conditions under which big leaguers of the era lived, worked, and played.
Customer Reviews:
Baseball at its Best.......2005-05-05
Pete Reiser is more than a book about one of the greatest ball players of all time. It is a history of early baseball with all the back room deals exposed. The story is a man's clear look at our national pastime.
Sid pulls no punches and really makes the game come alive, on the diamond as well as behind closed doors. If you are a fan of baseball or just a sport's historian, I know you will like this book.
Respect and Passion .......2004-10-15
Although I am not a fan of baseball, I have heard many stories of Pete Reiser, and was compelled to pick up and read this wonderful and insightful book by Sidney Jacobson. The book is written with passion for the game and a great respect and fondness for Mr. Reiser. I highly recommend this book to all those who love reading and of course it would be a must for any fan of baseball.

Book Description
An accessible guide to portfolio-enhancing asset management in bull or bear markets
Asset allocation is a crucial and continually popular topic among investors of all types. The Art of Asset Allocation is a practical, hands-on guide that shows finance professionals and individual investors how to achieve an asset balance designed to thrive in a wide range of financial market environments. David Darst, author of the highly acclaimed The Complete Bond Book, provides a comprehensive framework for using asset allocation principles in bull, bear, or non-trending markets. This complete asset allocation guide contains:
- Differences between tactical and strategic asset allocation--and the advantages of each
- Effective tools for determining asset allocation strategies
- Asset class descriptions and historical risk and return statistics for all major asset classes
- Rebalancing guidelines
- Investor behavior analysis
- Practical financial worksheets, charts, and other illustrative tools
- An annotated guide to traditional and Internet-based information sources
Customer Reviews:
Eminently readable and extremely useful and user friendly........2006-01-17
This is the premier primer on asset allocation. David Darst takes a truly complex issue facing every investor and breaks the whole into easily digestible parts. One finishes the book feeling confident and competent. The worksheets are illuminating, the charts are clear, the text is articulate, interesting and comforting. Anyone who is afraid of the daunting task of investing in this complex world of derivatives and ETFs and hedge funds will find this book a clear map of how to proceed in small steps to create a portfolio which is geared towards one's own risk parameters and return requirements.
Too little, too much.......2005-11-10
This is a good 50 page book concisely wrapped in 375 pages. The author obviously uses most of the material in lectures/workshops, as the graphics are powerpoint and each page seems to require a list of i), ii), iii), etc. Some material on asset classes is good but it takes a lot of plowing to find those gems. I agree the author seems more intent on coaxing you to use an advisor, like himself, and to try and time the market (oh if only we could.) For an average investor, as I consider myself, I think a book like "Asset Dedication" by Huxley and Burns makes far more sense and better reading.
For Those Who Care About Money..........2005-04-14
There are generally two audiences who read financial books and publications: Financial practioners and the rest of the population who is interested in money & investing. It is quite rare and, in my opinion, undesirable for a finance book to try to speak to both audiences simultaneously.
Darst works for a premier financial firm that specializes in helping those who are already rich get richer. It stands to reason then that his analysis, stemming from his professional expertise, would be at a high level from the gate.
I give this book 5 stars and reccomend that only financial practioners or investors who already possess a high level of understanding attempt to read it. The author states at the beginning of the book that investors with little capital (who are at the beginning of the wealth accumulation cycle) keep it simple. You do not need this book if you have less than $100,000 of investable assets. That is not to say that you shouldn't read it in preparation for future financial success. The asset allocation methods in this book are designed to grow/protect/diversify an already significant pool of funds.
For those who have prospered financially, consulting a financial advisor is really the only prudent course of action. But, like anything else in life - Chance favors the prepared mind.
Okay, but for the individual investor there are better books.......2004-12-06
This book reads a little too much like a textbook. If I was a financial advisor, I would probably see more value in it. I preferred William Bernstein's "Intelligent Asset Allocator" to this book. Bernstein talks more directly to the small investor.
Insightful!.......2004-03-01
Decades of research by scholars and financial practitioners have generally supported the reasonable counsel "don't put all your eggs in one basket." But it is one thing to advise investors to diversify, and another to show them how. Author David M. Darst outlines a systematic approach to parceling out your savings among different investment assets. There's a science to asset allocation, though its principles are not immediately apparent. Darst treats these precepts with admirable thoroughness in a book that is, mostly, accessible to an educated layperson. But brew some strong coffee. Readers lacking a business or finance background may find the theoretical discussion difficult and tedious, particularly given the deliberate style. However this 2003 book follows one of the most dramatic periods in stock market history, the 1990s, when even sophisticated market watchers wondered if the sound financial principles cited here still applied. The ensuing bear market made it clear that the laws of risk and return had not yet been repealed. In this atmosphere, We welcome this solid explanation of risk and return.

Powerful words.......2005-01-17
Ida B. Wells was an African-American woman of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. She was born and grew up in the South, born in Mississippi during the Civil War. It is significant the impact of the legacy of slavery on her life -- she recounts how her parents, who were married as slaves, remarried each other as free persons after the war. Wells was a determined and intelligent woman -- her parents died while she was young, yet old enough to be left with the responsibility of her younger brothers and sisters. At the age of 14 she found herself at the head of a household with five younger children.
She worked hard to make sure that her education did not suffer, and eventually (a rarity for women of any colour in America at the time) went to work for a newspaper.
In an incident that foreshadowed Rosa Parks, she was once removed from a train for sitting in the wrong section, despite her ownership of a valid ticket for the seat. She sued the railroad and won (newspaper headlines read 'Darky Damsel Gets Damages' without concern for the racist tone), but the judgment was overturned on appeal, and she later discovered her lawyers had been paid off by the railroads, and the appellate judges had thought she was just being uppity to pursue the matter.
Such was the state of the African-American community that none came to her assistance as she pursued this fight. This made her more determined to organise and fight.
Several of her newspaper partners and other friends in Memphis were lynched for these efforts, and Wells was threatened herself, and left the South, but did not give up her crusade. Where ever she went, through cities and towns in the North as well as over to Europe (where, she said, she felt like she was treated as a real human being equal with others for the first time) she decried the injustice of laws which dismissed charges or gave light sentences if victims were coloured, and prosecuted more strongly, gave out harsher sentences, or even resorted to lynch mobs if the defendant (who was often not guilty) was coloured.
She continued speaking and publishing up to her death in 1931. She was never afraid of making herself unpopular, and often upset the African-American community by being critical of their complacency (especially the upper and middle classes). She became unpopular by standing against the military service during World War I, because of prejudicial and discriminatory practices, and never quite recovered in popular esteem from that.
But Wells had courage and determination that is rare in persons, male or female, of any colour, of any time, to take on such a task as the exposition and combat of lynching in the South during the post-Civil War decades. Talking directly with governors and even a president, Wells made her voice heard, and it was a difficult hearing in a difficult time.
This book, edited and introduced by Jacqueline Jones Royster, includes three primary publications of Ida B. Wells:
Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases
A Red Record
Mob Rule in New Orleans
These three publications highlight the problem of lynching, something that continued well past Wells' death in 1931. Despite this, Wells' campaign made significant strides to bring media attention and organised resistance in different ways to the problem of this violence. Presented in the text, the reader gets to read the actual writing of Wells, as well as introductory and appendix information helping fill out the context and additional details.
This is hard reading, but necessary for understanding some of the more tragic parts of American history.
Raw But Real American History.......2001-06-23
Mrs. Ida B. Wells-Barnett should be as well known as Soujourner Truth or Rosa Parks. This was one revolutionary heroine! She was run out of Memphis for writing boldly about lynchings in the 1890s. She also did an in-depth study on lynching called "A Red Record" (included here) that told the truth about this practice on a national level. Another excellent segemnt teels the forgotten true tale of Robert Charles, who unsucessfully stood up to a New Orleans Lynch mob in 1900 using credible primary sources (see als William Ivy Hair's "Carnival of Fury" on that subject). This is the history you didn't get from your high-school teacher! READ it!

Book Description
As the most famous journalist of the early twentieth century, Ring Lardner's wry skills as an observer and satirical bent as a writer weren't just confined to the sporting arenas of his day. In 1918 he packed his kit bag and his biting wit and headed off to France on assignment for Colliers, to cast a Lardneresque eye on the Great War. At the same time, he created a new wartime series of letters from the pen of his most famous fictional character-Jack Keefe-who had traded in his baseball flannels for military drab. LARDNER ON WAR puts together, for the first time, the two masterpieces from this era-"My Four Weeks in France" and "Treat 'Em Rough: Letters from Jack the Kaiser Killer"-to introduce the wit, wisdom, and whimsy of Ring Lardner to a new generation of readers.
Ring Lardner is considered to be one of America's greatest comic geniuses after Mark Twain, and baseball's greatest writer of all time. His writings on baseball are collected in Lardner on Baseball (page 00). He popularized the use of colloquial vernacular in American letters in such classics as You Know Me, Al, and Gullible's Travels. He died in 1933 at the age of forty-eight.

Customer Reviews:
Good Summary of the History of VideoTape Systems.......2002-01-12
The RCA CED VideoDisc system is barely mentioned in this book, but it does provide a comprehensive history of video tape formats, with an emphasis on how RCA and other American manufacturers let VCR production slip through their fingers. Besides covering the Betamax and VHS tape formats, the book also deals with other obscure tape formats like CV-2000, U-matic, EVR, InstaVision, Cartrivision, AutoVision, V-Cord, HoloTape, and MagTape. The last several chapters of the book deal extensively with the landmark Universal vs. Sony lawsuit.
Why is this book not in print again?.......2001-07-20
This book is so relevant to the time we live in now its silly. All the IP issues that are argued ad nauseum about ... and its ilk have all been hashed out 20 years ago. Even some of the players were the same, such as our old friend Jack Valenti and Sony (who were on the other side at the time!) The IP parts are great, but the history of the BETA vs VHS battles are also very illuminating and the stories about the Sony engineers and early failed attempts at VCRs are fascinating.
Techno junkies will love this book. Order it....
A classic; Lardner shows how IP law *really* works.......1999-10-01
This is a great book for those who think that Japanese firms somehow misbehaved in overtaking the U.S. electronics industry. It is also one book that the founders of Apple should have read. By keeping it for itelf, Sony seems to have insured the demise of the superior beta format!
This techobusiness weirdness that we're in isn't new.......1997-03-18
It happens all the time. Here we go again. Pick a winner and win a prize.
Here is a wonderful history book about new media, and the string of failures including
CBS's EVR, RCA's Holotape and MagTape, Sony's U-Matic (it was intended to be a
consumer device, but was an accidental hit in the professional market, not unlike IBM's PC)
and Betamax, Discovision, Cartrivision, V-Cord, and the ultimate winner, JVC's Video
Home System. It explains why the Japanese decided to fight it out in the marketplace
with competing 1/2" tape systems, and has lots of coverage of the Betamax Case, which
has important implications not only in Freedom of Speech and Copyright Law, but in the
politics of Muchomedia. Many of the questions we struggle with in Modern Muchomedia
tripped up these guys a decade earlier.

A Real Find For Lardner Fans.......2001-01-26
Since only a small portion of the great Ring Lardner's work is still in print (i.e., "You Know Me Al" and various collections of his sports writing and short stories), this well-chosen collection of his letters is a happy discovery for fans of the humorist. As one would expect from Lardner, the letters are breezy, funny, and full of acerbic insight. Enormously popular in his day and now sadly forgotten, Lardner corresponded with a veritable Who's Who of his time. Mr. Caruthers is to be commended for his intelligent selection of letters, as well as his helpful commentary and annotation. Reading these letters makes one wish that some enterprising publisher would release the Collected Works of Ring Lardner. Until such time, we deprived fans must be grateful for small gems such as this book.

Book Description
1918. Lardner, American humorist and short-story writer, is known for his mordant wit, exemplified in satirical stories and sketches of American life in the early 20th century told in the language of athletes, stockbrokers, secretaries, chorus girls, etc. This volume contains a series of letters from Jack, who is stationed at Camp Grant, to his Friend Al, with tongue-in-cheek descriptions of life in the service. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
Book Description
First published in 1990, Eco-Warriors was the first in-depth look at the people, the actions, the history and the philosophies behind the "radical" environmental movement. Focusing on the work of Earth First!, the Sea Shepherds, Greenpeace, and the Animal Liberation Front, among others, Rik Scarce told exciting and sometimes frightening tales of front-line warriors defending an Earth they see as being in environmental peril. While continuing to study these movements as a Ph.D. student, Scarce was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to divulge his sources to prosecutors eager to thwart these groups' activities. In this updated edition, Scarce brings the trajectory of this movement up to dateincluding material on the Earth Liberation Frontand provides current resources for all who wish to learn more about one of the most dynamic and confrontational political movements of our time. Literate, captivating, and informative, this is also an ideal volume for classes on environmentalism, social movements, or contemporary politics.
Customer Reviews:
great book - this man is dedicated to saving the environment.......2000-02-15
Eco-Warriors was written by Rik Scarce, a journalist who lives in Washington. This book attempts (and succeeds) to help readers understand why such grups as Earth First! and such "radical" environmental groups take the actions that they do. Scarce presents as much as an objective view as possible, he stresses his sympathy for the "front-line warriors" in the battle to save the earth. Well-told stories of activists doing the only effective thing to save the environment - get to the root of the problem and stop the individuals/governments/companies that are polluting the environment or needlessly killing endangered animals for profit or lack of responsibility. The people he describes are bypassing the ineffective routes of petitioning and organizing local recycling groups, and making major impacts on international policy.

Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year - Northern California.......2000-04-27
This outstanding book is organized by month and details the natural events occurring in Northern CA. For each month, the author describes a number of key events and provides detailed information about primary and alternate locations to witness these natural events. I have used this book for the last 4 years to plan day and weekend trips throughout Northern CA. The appendix is worth the price of the book, as it details address and contact information for key federal, state, regional and private agencies. Whether you are visiting or are a resident of Northern CA, you will find this book invaluable reference to explore the flora and fauna of this area.
