    Book Description

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) ruled England for 45 turbulent years, and her reign has come to be seen as a golden age. She exercised supreme authority in a man's world, while remaining intensely feminine. She was Gloriana, the Virgin Queen, but is also held up as a role model for company executives in the twenty-first century. She is a near-legendary figure from a remote past who remains fascinatingly modern.
This handsome volume has been published to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Elizabeth I's death in 1603. It illustrates in color and, where possible, in actual size, sixty manuscripts--either by Elizabeth or to her. Each one is accompanied by a running commentary, explaining the document and placing it in its historical context, and selected transcriptions or, where necessary, translations from the originals.
Elizabeth was a girl of extraordinary precocity and a brilliant linguist. Her early letters, written in a beautiful italic, are to her forbidding father, Henry VIII, and to her brother and sister, Edward VI and "Bloody" Mary. The very first letter dates from when she was a child of eleven. The last, written nearly 60 years later, is a barely-legible scrawl addressed to her successor, the future James I. The letters from her in-tray are no less extraordinary. Tsar Ivan the Terrible rounds on her in a blind fury after she refuses to marry him. The Earl of Essex, young enough to be her son, pours out declarations of love: a few pages further on is to be found her signed warrant for his execution. There are letters from ministers and galley slaves, spies and traitors, coded letters, warrants for torture, speeches to parliament, and the original--only recently identified--of the most famous of all her utterances: "I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king."

              Book Description

This book offers a new set of metrics for identifying, analyzing, and responding to the right information at the right time—helping companies to avoid disasters and seize opportunities

Based on exclusive research into recent business catastrophes—and drawing parallels to a range of nonbusiness disasters from 9/11 to the Challenger disaster—Heads Up outlines a four-step approach managers can use to identify which pieces of information merit real-time delivery, and as importantly, which do not.

McGee then provides a practical methodology—real time opportunity detection—for monitoring, analyzing, and responding to that critical information in time to ward off negative surprises and jump on potential opportunities ahead of competitors.

5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended and practical guide.......2004-07-09

Written by the group vice-president of Gartner, Inc., a research and advisory firm, Heads Up: How To Anticipae Business Surprises And Seize Opportunities First is a no-nonsense advice guide to business managers everywhere. Emphasizing that the key is being keenly aware of what is going on in the present day, and that business disasters seldom come without any kind of warning, Heads Up walks the reader through a practical methodology to paying attention of the circumstances around oneself and navigating the choppy and changeable seas of opportunity, risk, and surprise, suspected, or surmounted events. Heads Up is a highly recommended and practical guide to raising entrepreneurial and corporate awareness.

5 out of 5 stars Transform Business Surprises into Opportunities.......2004-07-01

Business "surprises" occur with an alarming frequency. It is an understatement to say they exact a considerable toll on the organization.

According to Kenneth G. McGee, even the worst catastrophes rarely happen without warning. The author is a group vice president and research fellow at Gartner, Inc., a consultancy that specializes in information technology. His book, Heads Up, is about predicting the present.

Managers need to understand what is happening now and how these current events will impact future success. This involves extracting raw empirical information, analyzing it and determining its meaning and implications.

So what is new, you ask? McGee answers managers do not need all the data to understand the present. Only enough to answer the question, "Where are we right now in meeting our corporate goals?"

To an effective executive, this current information always reveals opportunities to improve results. There is a tendency to confuse real-time information with real-time response. In the perfect situation, the following processes happen in the background between the time when an event happens and that event's impact is felt.

              1. Information related to the event is monitored.
              2. A change in the information is captured.
              3. The information is analyzed.
              4. The information is reported.
              5. A response is initiated.

No manager can afford to monitor all his information sources. To determine which sources to monitor, information should be filtered using the following Identification Model:

              1. List goals for the planning period.
              2. Prioritize them.
              3. Evaluate them.
              4. List causal events.
              5. Prioritize the causal events.
              6. Evaluate whether the real-time information will enable the executive to respond effectively.

Each candidate generated by the Identification Model is subjected to the Justification Model:

              1. Does the goal the information further the corporate vision and mission?
              2. Does the goal meet current corporate priorities?
              3. Is the information material to the goal?
              4. What is the goal's corporate impact?

McGee's book goes beyond the usual real-time hype. It will help executives anticipate events and changes. The result: potential disasters will be transformed into opportunities.

              4 out of 5 stars worth reading.......2004-03-03

What I was most impressed with about this book is that the author doesn't just preach the glories of real-time. He actually talks about what information shouldn't be real-time. In fact he says that only 5% of corporate information should be real time.

Just for that its worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars new thinking on real time.......2004-03-03

Most of what I read about real-time business falls squarely in the internet era of overblown hype and ridiculous propositions. This book, along with a few stories I've seen in The Economist, offers realistic perspectives on what real-time enterprise really is and how it can realistically help.

In short, the author says that its not about reacting faster per se, but about getting information in real time so you know when to react.

Also in the books favor are two items: 1) lots of case studies of both failure and success due to real-time information or its lack, 2) models/methodologies that one can actually see using in a business context unlike what you so often see. The models are useful to the average manager not just to the CEO or the chairman of the board.

So all in all a very useful and helpful book for understanding the value of real-time information

Now the Schindlers share their love and their sorrow, their joy and their pain, and stunning revelations as they celebrate Terri's life, mourn her death, and tell the whole story of the woman and the battle that captivated millions.

                Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down for "Terri's Family".......2006-11-27

Anyone gushing over the "concerned and loving" parent's of Terri Shiavo really needs to read Michael Shiavo's book on the life and death of his wife. Unlike "Terri's Family," he uses real documents, court and hospital records to support his case. He also exposes the Shindler's (in particular, Bob), as being much less concerned with their their daughter's treatment and more more concerned with affording a bigger condo.

Terri is finally resting in peace.

                3 out of 5 stars A Very difficult case.......2006-08-09

I hate trying to assign stars to a book like this. It's a very controversial topic, and one that I have strong opinions on. Still, I don't assume that everyone who disagrees with me is wrong, wrong, wrong. I have too much sympathy for all the combatants. I wish there had been a way to work it out peaceably.

There have been four books written by or with the cooperation of the principals in this case, and I have listed them in the productwiki. This came out at approximately the same time as Michael Schiavo's Terri: The Truth. It is interesting to see how the two books use the same witness, Cindi Shook, pp. 105-113 of this book and pp. 179-189 of Schiavo's. One might think that there were two different women.

The backbone of this narrative is by Mary Schindler, with other members of the family narrating specific events. This was a trifle confusing at first, but I rapidly got used to it. It reads pretty smoothly and has explanatory notes at the bottom of the page. It includes a section of color family photographs and four affadavits by doctors. Frustratingly enough, there is no index in any of the four books, so it is difficult to compare their handling of specific issues.

The Schindlers have three basic arguments: 1. Terri was not in a persistent vegetative state (PVS); 2. Even if she was in PVS, she left no instructions; 3. Even if she was was in PVS and left clear instructions "There is not now and never has been a 'right' to die" (p.221). That last statement not only makes the other two moot, and but I cannot help but wonder if to the Schindlers and their supporters, it justified saying just about anything in the first two arguments. With all the oversight that the case received, they simply don't convince me of the first two arguments. Michael Schiavo would have to have organized and sustained a large cabal of amoral doctors and judges, beginning before the case became famous and he became a poster-child for right-to-die issues, and continuing through a glare of publicity. Even assuming that they had no morals or professional ethics, Schiavo wasn't a politically powerful man, and the malpractice settlement simply wasn't that large, considering the expenses

The family strikes me as befuddled by grief. Despite their conviction that it really isn't relevant, the Schindlers still insist in the face of the autopsy that the doctors' diagnosis of PVS was wrong, the wild coincidence that it was confirmed is explained by the process of dying. Mary Schindler's description of her daughter as "healthy" is mind-boggling, even if she was at least minimally conscious. It strikes me as both delusional and heart-breaking. Bobby Schindler states: (p. 231): "Remember, most hospitals and many doctors WANT YOU TO DIE. It's convenient that way and much less expensive" [emphasis in the original]. I find that absolutely incredible! I can't imagine how so many people I know, including myself, have walked into those death traps and escaped!

I hope the Schindlers find consolation in their campaigns, but their agenda scares me. I believe that there should be a right-to-die, there is legally a right, I've left written instructions, and I certainly don't want the Schindlers and their ilk harassing my family. I wish the Schindlers all the luck in the world in creating their free hospital for those who want it, but I don't. I wonder which will take precendence: the political campaign or the hospital? I think it should be the latter: if the Schindlers can provide good care, then they might lovingly and gentle change people's minds in individual cases.

Certainly worth reading, but it doesn't convince me.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this one........it's a real bore.......2006-06-28

If people want to read a book that is more objective about this case please read, "Unplugged, Reclaiming Our Right to Die in America" by William Colby. Mr. Colby is the lawyer for Nancy Cruzan, a case very similar to Terri Schiavo's, so he is very knowledgable about this topic. He does not denigrate either family and approaches the subject of dying very even-handedly. Reading either the book by Michael Schiavo or the book by the Schindlers is an exercise in futility to me. Both sides have their own opinion of what happened and are obviously very biased to their own point of view. This is a very dysfunctional family that will never agree with anything the other says simply because they do not like each other, and readers should understand this when they read their books. In between all this name-calling and accusations lies the real truth, as it usually does, and no one, especially the public, knows that real truth.

This is a case that should have never been so highly publicized, it just brought out the kooks and all those people who like to hear and see themselves proselytize on TV (including politicians) These difficult decisions are quietly made every day in this country (since the Quinlan and Cruzan cases) without any fanfare and this case should have been no different. And anyone who thinks "starving" Terri could cause the massive brain damage seen on autopsy is just plain stupid.

Anyway, don't bother with this book or any of the other family-versions unless you want reinforced what you already believe is the truth......read something that is unbiased, objective, and neutral.

5 out of 5 stars A Captivating Testimony of Love and Compassion.......2006-06-14

In today's world, the culture of death is continuously growing stronger in its influence on the media and the way we think. They try to convince everyone that the disabled should be killed--that they are "better off dead," "vegetables," and "not worthy of life." When we think of such arguments, the most recent case that comes to mind is the case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo, a disabled woman that, due to an activist judge and her adulterous husband, was cruelly dehydrated to death for two weeks, and was denied the right that should have been undeniable to her: the right to life. The culture of death ever since has labelled Terri's death as "a blessing" and "heroism." Even when Terri's autopsy showed that her collapse was not caused by a heart attack or bulimia, the culture of death has automatically concluded that "Saint Michael Schiavo is always right," and that Terri had been "PVS and dead for fifteen years" and a "burden on society." (Despite the fact that a persistent vegetative state cannot be diagnosed by an autopsy, and the immense brain damage seen during the autopsy could have easily been caused by Terri's extended dehydration period.) The Schindlers, Terri's family, were labelled as "freaks" and "evil bigots."

However, that did not stop them from coming out and putting down their difficult story in words, so that people in conditions similar to and even worse than Terri's will be spared the fate that their beloved daughter and sister was sentenced to, and instead be loved, cared for, and treated by their family until their natural death.

"A Life That Matters" is the heart-wrenching and emotional side of a story about Terri Schindler-Schiavo's fight and eventual loss for life, written by her family that was criminalized by the culture of death simply because they wished to love and care for her. It includes the testimonies of Terri's family and friends--the people who knew her best--who come out and praise the life she led as a beautiful young woman, a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. The testimonies shared in the book also bring strong evidence against Michael Schiavo's claims that it was "Terri's wish" to die and the fabricated fairy-tale marriage that he claims to have had with her.

I would recommend this book to anyone that believes the disabled deserve life and loving care, not death, and also to those who are on the fence about the case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo and other disabled persons--this book may change the very way you think!

                5 out of 5 stars Anti-murder manifesto.......2006-05-25

Terri Schiavo's life and tragic, horrific death by dehydration changed the world as millions of people watched the efforts of her estranged husband to legally murder her.

My husband and I certainly watched it. I never would've guessed that a little over a year later, I would be facing a situation that was the worst I'd ever been through - and in many ways, strikingly similar.

Suffice it to say that my husband is ALIVE and recovering in a prolife hospital, and only because of the most desperate tactics I could muster to save him from a doctor and hospital who committed gross mistakes, then tried to cover them up by disconnecting his life support and saying he told them he "wanted to die."

The fact that my husband and I had discussed in excruciating detail what we both wanted done if we were in a similar situation didn't deter the butcher shop masquerading as a hospital from trying to force DEATH on him. Why? Well, because they made a mistake, and if he died, they could say the "cancer" of which he is cured killed him - not their gross negligence.

Yes, this really happens in America. I bet you never knew a doctor or medical ethics committee can invalidate your living will, IF your living will says that you want to LIVE.

We're in a brave new world where imperfect people are disposable. Where you can murder helpless human beings by starving and dehydrating them to death, although any human being deprived of food and water WILL die (gee, even Michael Schiavo, although God knows he's got enough fat to live off for years.)

The idea that a human being who isn't 100 percent doesn't have a "quality of life" is the biggest load of horse manure to be forced on society from the Death Cultists. How utterly arrogant! How hopelessly stupid!

How about if the Death Cultists just follow their own advice and commit suicide? They're so grimly determined to shove everyone else six feet under that they should just cut to the chase and show us how it's done by practicing it themselves.

I'd be happy to help. :)

                    Book Description

The Literary Spy provides a unique view of the intelligence world through the words of its own major figures (and those fascinated with them) from ancient times to the present. CIA speechwriter and analyst Charles E. Lathrop has compiled and annotated more than 3,000 quotations from such disparate sources as the Bible, spy novels and movies, Shakespeare’s plays, declassified CIA documents, memoirs, TV talk shows, and speeches from U.S. and foreign leaders and officials.
Arranged in thematic categories with opening commentary for each section, the quotations speak for themselves. Together they serve both to illuminate a world famous for its secrets and deceptions and to show the extent to which intelligence has manifested itself in literature and in life. Engaging, informative, and often irreverent, The Literary Spy is an exceedingly satisfying book—one that meets the needs of the serious researcher just as ably as those of the armchair spy in pursuit of an evening’s entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of two indispensable books for scholars.......2006-10-21

As both a teacher of intelligence and national security classes as well as a writer about intelligence, Lathrop's book is only the second indispensable book I have come across. The other is Polmar and Allen's Spy Book.

I have used The Literary Spy in the last four articles or chapters I have published. It not only provides some of the best insights of both scholars and practitioners on a variety of intelligence topics, but it also provides very helpful introductions to each of those topics.

I have even been tempted to use the book as a textbook for a class I teach on intelligence. By the time a student has read through all of the pithy comments on, for example, "Counterintelligence," he or she would have been exposed to the essence of some of the very best writing on that topic.

But the book is most helpful to researchers and writers on intelligence. It is like having one's own miniature Google-like search through the best of intelligence writing in one's own hand. And all of the quotations used are fully documented. I am hooked on it. This volume occupies all too valuable and minimal desk space next to my keyboard and will do so for a long time.

Finally, it is a book that can be read just for the fun of reading. It makes wonderful reading on cold Winter nights or hot Summer evenings. One does not have to be an expert on intelligence to enjoy it.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource!.......2005-03-06

This is a rare type of book--unique, fun, and useful all at the same time. To my knowledge, no other book brings together so many quotes and comments about the world of intelligence. These quotes, along with Mr. Lathrop's comments, provide a guide to how intelligence works--or doesn't work--and will help educate anyone interested in spying and intelligence.

This is more than just another reference book filled with quotes, however. You can open it to any page, start reading, and quickly become engrossed. Soon, I suspect, most readers will find themselves jumping from one subject to another, and writing down titles of books that Lathrop draws from. It's addictive.

Finally, this book is fun. Lathrop has a sly sense of humor, and his quotes often are ironic or just plain funny; he displays a dry wit in his own comments, as well.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in intelligence, history, or current events.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Reference .......2004-10-22

A majority of Americans do not understand intelligence, given its necessarily sensitive and exclusionary nature. Greater news coverage of the subject, generally in the context of national security issues, does not appear to have enlightened a public that prefers to view things through an increasingly partisan political lens.

For those who do not subscribe to simplistic reductions of the complex ideas surrounding the theory and practice of intelligence, Charles Lathrop has compiled and annotated a solution in the form of The Literary Spy. LitSpy is a collection of over 3,000 quotations, infused with the wit and wisdom of the author. The result is a masterful collection of powerful ideas and observations articulated in a very memorable way.

Examples? The reader is treated to quotes from sources as diverse as the Bible and Socrates to the late Washington Post scribe and perennial CIA critic Mary McGrory. Better still, Lathrop uses his insider access as a CIA officer to provide quotes that we otherwise would not have access to. One especially memorable offer was solicited to the Agency by a dentist offering his services "for the interrogation of anybody you choose" in the wake of the September 11th attacks. Lathrop assures us the individual was not hired, despite the patriotic sentiments expressed in the e-mail.

From a structural standpoint, LitSpy is remarkably user-friendly. Its sixty-five categories of quotations are arranged alphabetically and can be accessed by subject or source index. Lathrop also includes a select bibliography for the reader. While he modestly states that his book "does not pretend to be comprehensive," it is difficult not to marvel at the breadth and depth of effort that went into this magnificent compilation made better by the humorous asides and insightful comments of this former military officer, analyst, speechwriter, and intel boss-jock shop honcho.

This book is for insiders and outsiders, critics and defenders, and should be on the shelf of anyone with any interest in the true nature of intelligence. Lathrop is to be commended for this unique contribution to the field of intelligence literature.

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource for amateurs and professionals.......2004-10-09

I saw this book last night and snapped it up immediately. I have been an intelligence analyst for the government for a long time now, and I love using appropriate quotes to set off reports and presentations. Needless to say, "the Literary Spy" is jam-packed with them.

A few of the quotes aren't that striking, but a lot are. I particularly liked the sections about counterintelligence, deception, and traitors "in their own words."

I think this book is also a good one for the intelligence "buff" as well as people who just like pithy quotations. I imagine students writing papers about espionage would find it very useful as well.

In short, it's worth every penny, and I congratulate the author.
