I found this an excellent book that balances simple descriptions with economic analyses. Waugh meshes together the various levels of society and shows how power became stratified within layers of elites.
The book has it all - the church, towns, villages, the power of the monarchy, law, trade, economic and social change and the cost of war. I found the book easy to read, occasionally got lost, but overall it is excellent. I am buying the book as my library has demanded it back! Well worth several reads.

Fascinating Memoir.......2001-06-22
As the title says, this is the Memoir of a Mountain Guide. Actually it is the memoir of one of America's first and greatest mountain guides. It is truly a fascinating, well-written story but it is not adventure writing. Do not expect the detail or suspense of John Krakauer, Art Davidson, Heinrich Harrer, or Maurice Herzog. It reads more like sitting down across the table with Lou and having him tell you his story over a couple of beers. This is probably because it is the result of Lou telling his story to Andrea Gabbard who in turn wrote the book.
Lou's story is much different than many of the great mountaineers. While he obviously pushed himself to the top of some of the world's tallest and most difficult peaks, since his near fall on Mount Index in Washington he remained a more conservative climber not willing to trade his life for any mountain summit. In fact, he makes the point of saying the last place he wants to die is on a mountain; he wants to die old sitting in his chair watching TV. Also, as expedition leader, he viewed success as putting team members on the summit and this often did not include himself.
In addition to his story, his climbs, and his life as a mountain climber and guide, he gives a detailed description of Mount Rainier and a historical view of how mountain climbing progressed over the years. Probably the best thing of all though, is the look at a person's life who dedicated themselves to following a passion rather than relegating it to a weekend hobby; it was a long career in the making for him, but it shows that we can make our lives what we want if only we have the courage, persistence, and dedication to try.

Reading Lou Whittaker's life story was the best type of introuction to mountain climbing that I could have had. It combined the personal and technical sides of climbing in a way that wasn't overwhelming. I am now eager to read Andrea Gabbard's book, Mountaineering: A Woman's Guide. Because if Lou can climb all those mountains, I can climb a few too.

A wonderful book to read in your tent, alone along the trail.......2000-05-29
I purchased the paperback version of this fine book in the Fall of 1998, and packed it along with me for several nights on a solo backpacking trip through the California Redwoods. The autumn nights in November were long and dark, and Lou Whittaker's book made for some marvelous reading out there, alone in my tent along the trail...read the entire book cover-to-cover by flashlite, and it was a thriller...accompanied by real and imagined sounds that went "thump" in the night! Must admit though, I'm a bit prejudiced, as I had the good fortune of meeting Lou Whittaker in person near the summit of Mount Rainier in 1970, and came to greatly admire the fellow. Reading his new book for the first time was like reuniting with an old friend after a long absence. Definitely a MUST READ for anyone looking for a good book to take with them, along the trail.
Famous climber does not equal great writer..........1999-11-11
There's no doubt that Whittaker is one of America's best climbers. Were he only one of America's best writers as well, this book would be more enjoyable. As it is, much of the book is taken up with anecdotes in which the author proves to be smarter, tougher, and/or better prepared than someone else. The text is emotionally flat and sometimes boring, with rather little detail being given on Whittaker's climbing exploits. The author's dismissal of Galen Rowell on K2 is frankly ridiculous. There is some useful information here, but overall, it's not a book I would recommend.

Can we say Gay Studies Bible????.......2002-01-17
For too long, straight men have controlled how we watch and analyze film and video. Then, Laura Mulvey gave us an idea how women view things/use their gaze. Finally, a group of academics are theorizing how gays and lesbians "ga(y)ze". This book has great representation from men of color and women. At the end of every essay, experts debate articles with the authors, so you get an even broader discussion of the work. When I was in college, professors had this book on their reading lists all the time. I found myself being able to quote from this book all the time. Even activists and other academics quote from this book all the time. And I love the title with its campiness and double entendre. The name of the editors is equally clever. Anybody who is truly interested in gay and lesbians studies must buy and read this anthology!
theory heads from outer-space.......1999-09-26
Okay, I admit: the title sounds like a cosmetics manual. But it's really a collection of essays from a NYC conference about 10 years ago. For some reason, the men (Kobena Mercer, Richard Fung) are much better. They seem to know more about work being made. The women (DeLauretis, Judith Mayne) are interesting, but maybe too academic: too much theorizing based on too little material, focus on not-so-good historical (Dorothy Arzner) and more recent (Sheila McLaughlin) filmmakers makes it seem out of touch. Totally misses any of the more recent queer/grrl media, which had begun to surface by that time.
Some of the discussions add a bit of "grit" otherwise missing from the all-too-polished talks.
You'd never guess, from the volume, much of anything about the queer media explosion about to happen.

People that gave this book low ratings probably wrote competiting books. Because there was mixed reviews, I didn't buy it online, instead I went to the store to see the whole thing. Within two minutes of looking at it, I was sold.
I'm an newly appointed advertising sales manager who went to one trade show and saw I needed help. So I bought this book. That was just 4 hours ago, and I already have 4 pages of ideas that I know will help me make a lot more $$$$$$.
I'm just writing this review so you don't get skeptical like I did. Its not filled with useless stuff to add pages. Its pretty good stuff that a relative newcomer to the game will find VERY useful. Hot Shots that know everything already and write bad reviews shouldn't be buying books like this anyway. right?

It's not a bad book but it's too specific for my tastes. I prefer Michael LEvine's Guerilla PR Wired, which is a fantastic marketing book that has something for everyone. I'd suggest this book before everything else.

Whether you're a big business or just starting, when you first pick up this book, you'll find plenty of ideas that you can use immediately to make a real difference at your next trade show.
And like most books that you read, not every idea will work for you. Yet you'll get enough ideas in the first several dozen pages to pay for this book 100 times over. Read the whole book and you'll pay for it more than 1,000 times over. It paid like that for me!
Best of all, the ideas are practical. While the authors suggest where to look for resources, they do so without being commercial.
I've bought nearly every trade show book printed, including all those available on Amazon. Guerrilla Trade Show Selling is the only one that I refer to before every show.

Dense with detail and thought provoking.......2005-02-14
This book was extremely dense and full of detail. At times the authors overwhelmed me with names, dates, events, and abbreviations-all that being said I learned more about EPA from reading than anything else I have read.
The introduction provides you with a good foundation of the goings on prior to EPAs creation, and what spurred its creation. The sections on the Ozone Standard, RCRA, Superfund, Cancer Policy, and CAA are informative to say the least. It is in these five sections that I felt overwhelmed with details and names--that at times really seemed excessive, and not necessary to get the story/history through. Again, They also managed, despite the wordiness, to lay out what was going on, put it into context, and at the same time raises important questions.
Part III provides details on the Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton Administrations, although the Clinton section is weak at best (but that has more to do with when this book was written than anything else). I seems to present a very evenhanded look throughout at both Democrats and Republicans in the White House. Their style sold me on their credibility to tell is as it was.

Wonderful book about manatees.......2007-03-07
This new book was both easy to read and quite informative, covering the history of Florida's lovable manatees, their lifestyle, biology, and a look at their future. I visit Florida on an annual basis to snorkel with manatees and this book is the best resource I've found for up to date manatee information. It comes highly recommended.

The Florida Manatee is possibly the best book on manatee biology, behavior, ecology, and current research available. It provides indepth information about manatees in an easy to read format that can be used by the layperson, scientist, or wildlife manager. I would recommend this book to anyone who has interest in one of the world's most endangered and lovable mammals!

The Florida Manatee, Biology and Conservation book is a very complete and good overview about manatee and a really interesting book. It contain a lot of informations writing on an easy and agreable way to read and to understand for everybody interesting on manatee. I recommend this book to everybody interesting on learning more about manatee. A really great book!

I bought this book for my niece who is a marine biologist. She loves the book. And really likes the personal stories. I read the book as well, and found it to be extremely informative about manatee biology and issues. This book also provides a unique introduction into the world of real working biologists, which i found to make it alot more fun to read. The pictures were great too! Definitely a must read for any one interested in manatees or marine mammals!
