One More Excrutiating Day in the Curse of the Bambino.......2000-08-07
Unless you are a Red Sox fan, you may not know about the Curse of the Bambino. In the early part of the 20th century, the Boston Red Sox dominated the American League. One of their best players was a pitcher named Babe Ruth. The owner traded the Babe to the New York Yankees in exchange for the money to invest in the Broadway production of No No, Nanette and it's been no cigar for the Red Sox ever since.
Jonathan Schwartz has one of the worst cases of Red Sox addiction that I have ever heard of. He has been a radio announcer in New York for over 30 years (that's enemy territory for Red Sox fans). To stay up with his beloved Red Sox, he spent almost $15,000 in long distance charges from 1970-77 to listen in to the air check for WITS in Hartford of the games (calling in from Paris in some cases).
This is a story first published in Sports Illustrated in 1978 and covers one of the worst periods in Red Sox history: The season when they blew a late 14 game lead to the dreaded Yankees. I lived in Boston at that time, and it was painful to recall the swoon. Yet at the end of the season, they pulled a comeback and tied the Yankees. There was to be a one-game playoff in Fenway Park (determined by a coin toss) on October 2, 1978. In a prior playoff against Cleveland in Fenway in 1948 (also on October 2), the Sox had lost 8-3.
During the slide, the worst time had been when the Red Sox lost four in a row in Fenway to the Yankees with less than a month to go. Schwartz recounts his reaction. In a funk, he impulsively walked out of his apartment with $50 and a credit card, and flew to California. Only after arriving did he remember to call his live-in girlfriend and tell her what he had done.
With the big game coming up, Schwartz thinks he should take it easy and watch the game on television. At the last minute, he cannot resist and calls in some markers to get a press pass.
Most of the book recounts the game. It is interspaced with pre and post game comments from the key players.
The ironies continue to abound. You'll have to read the book to get them all. The Sox took a 2-0 early lead, but the faithful were fearful. Bucky Dent, the light-hitting shortstop, fouled a ball off his leg and play was stopped temporarily while he was treated. On the mound, the delay cost Torres (the Red Sox pitcher and former Yankee) his concentration. You guessed it. Dent hit a home run. Gossage replaced Guidry later on and stops the Red Sox from rallying back.
The final score: New York 5, Boston 4 (or as Schwartz puts it "Destiny 5, Boston 4).
Required reading and rereading for all Red Sox fans until the Curse of the Bambino is lifted!
Overcome your disbelief that anyone team could have so much bad luck with so much talent by reading this engaging story of baseball tragedy!

A great read. I have just finished Ron Willingham's book, "The People Principle", and expected good things, was not disappointed. He makes the difficult process of working with different types of people easy to understand. Good material for the new service/sales employee, or the seasoned veteran. A management team could go through each chapter on a regular basis with their employees as a learning process.

I just finished reading this book, and it was not that great. A lot of the facts about the case are there, but there is way too much storytelling. Some parts of the book sound like a fiction novel geared towards 7th graders. I do not like the way the authors tell some of the stories of things that happened. The authors could have been more unbiased, especially when giving facts about the accuser. I felt that a lot of the time they were kind of assuming things about her and how she was thinking. The ending of the book is also horrible, and it is too open ended and fails to really tie into the rest of the book. The last chapter is kind of awkwardly placed at the end, maybe because there was no where else for it to go.... perhaps they need to add on to the book now that more has happened.
Oh, and they misspell Red Auerbach's name in the book, I'm surprised no one caught that before it went out.
Overall if you really want to read this, it gives a little insight, but it is not worth your time. If you followed this case in the press and read articles, you probably already know most of the stuff covered in this book and it is not worth it. If you did not follow this case at all and just want something to read that will give you the basic story, then it may be worth it for you.

Hard to find -- but worth the read. .......2005-03-06
Jennifer Stevens and Jeffrey Scott Shapiro's summary of the Kobe Bryant drama will most likely be immortalized since the case has been settled and all parties -- including Bryant, the victim and their lawyers are bound to silence. Stevens and Shapiro covered the case up until February of 2004, but very little happened afterwards, leaving the reader with all the pertinent information, including what happened the night of the alleged attack and the police interviews with Kobe. It's a fast turning read, but good luck trying to find a copy in an actual bookstore. Either they're all sold out or maybe there was a recall for a new edition or something. It's pretty hard to locate a copy now. I remember seeing them in Borders when the book first came out, but ended up borrowing a copy from a friend after I had a hard time relocating the book offline. This book reads easily, but almost all of the authors bombshells including the police interview and 3 other women Kobe had strange encounters with has been verified by other sources. It's a fun read and unfortunately it's all there is since no one else has written another book on the case. I'm glad there was at least one book out there that covers all the main points and stories. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in a broad overview of the case and an inside look at who the main players are.
Why is Shaq Testifying Against Kobe Bryant? .......2004-12-06
This book may be the answer - according to the authors, this isn't the first time that Kobe's made some strange moves on women. The authors say there are THREE other women who he's had "questionable circumstances" with - one of whom is in Portland, Oregon. The book doesn't say where the other two are, but they're probably in towns where the Lakers have played in the past. The writing is pretty good and entertaining. It' got some hard info and a pretty good history of Kobe's career, his rivalry and even good moments with Shaq. It's gonna be real interesting to see what Shaq AND his wife have to say - she's on the witness list too for the civil suit - now that he's been traded to the Miami Heat. Did the Lakers make the right move by trading Shaq and firing Phil Jackson to keep Kobe on board? We'll find out when they play the Heat soon. In the meantime, it'll be even more interesting to see how the two match up under oath in a courtroom! This book is a pretty good read for people who are interested in the NBA and want to know more about what's happening in the case.

Field Marshal Sir John French, the British Commander-in-Chief, had sent his men north in an attempt to take the fight into Flanders, so they could fight across open ground. History tells us that this was not to be the case. i noted that this book focuses mainly on the heroism of the British units at first ypres.In the artwork ,the Germans sort of have the look of a "foreign horde"(hunnish)look like they're not too bright.When you see the German casualty lists it seems like just so many ants,anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 according to the author,British casualties at 60,000.The British soldiers portrayed in the illustrations are notably in heroic poses bayonetting,machine gunning, or taking the Huns prisoner.At first Ypers the German stategic Vonschliffen plan officially ended and the western front settled pretty much into trench warfare.Britains professional army was decimated and the German high command was forced to accept the prospect of an unwinnable war.The opponents were just too evenly matched from the descriptions in this book.You will also note from the pictures that although the Germans are wearing wearing stahlhelms,the British are still wearing the softcaps,more useful for policing a soccer game but of no use in war,with flying bullets and shrapnel.This just reinforces how unprepared most countries were for this war,and this chaos and lack of organization are discussed in the book.It seemed from a study of the maps in the book, like the Germans were trying to find the British flanks,but too often found themselves enfiladed instead.There are also pictures and a discussion of some of Britains foreign troops mainly the Indian Sepoys which were vital and are too often overlooked.
I was disappointed.......2005-04-21
Perhaps my expectations have been raised too high by the many excellent Osprey campaign books I have read recently, but this book fell short for me. It is told almost entirely from the British point of view and can be easily summarized: the gallant Tommies hold off the German hordes despite terrible casualties. There is very little discussion of the German point of view and even less about the French, who played a key role in the battle. I give it three stars because the story is told competently, but that is all. Being a relatively early book in the series (they are now up to about 150), it does not meet the standard of the later books.
The book also suffers from having to devote a section to wargaming the battle (something dropped in the later books). The author wastes six pages on this -- wastes, as his ideas on wargaming are useless. He would have done much better to keep this section to a minimum and use the pages elsewhere -- either in more descriptions of small unit actions or to flesh out the sections on leaders and the opposing forces, which are terse to the point of being virtually useless. He does include a very detailed order of battle -- for the British. The orders of battle for the French and Germans are skimpy by comparison. In particular, the German heavy artillery, which he repeatedly mentions as having a big impact on actions, is left out completely.
The occasional detailed description of small unit actions are the high point of the book; the rest of the battle is told at such a high level (and in such a dry style) that I was not engaged. I would have happily given up some of the high level narrative for more small unit 'vignettes'. I was particularly intrigued by the author's mention of some of the more experienced German units using 'infiltration'. Since infiltration tactics are not normally considered to have been used until 1917, I would have liked to learn just what these units were doing. But to do that would have detracted from the relentlessly British focus of the book and so, apparently, would not do.
I did gain some interesting insights into this period. Although the standard image of World War 1 is the generals living in chateaus far from the front line, which they never visited, that was not true at this point. In fact, one divisional commander and most of two division's staffs were killed by a single German shell. Haig, in particular, comes across as a hero -- visiting the front lines, scraping together reserves to meet each German breakthrough and generally performing just as a good commander should. Although the author does not make this point, it is obvious that the Germans giving up the attack just when the British line was on the verge of collapse made a strong impression on him. Haig's determination to keep up attacks at (for instance) the Somme was probably based on his intention not to make this mistake; to 'out last' the Germans in the attack, as he had on the defense at First Ypres.
First Ypres 1914 - Publisher's Requirements.......2003-08-09
Given the obvious limitations imposed by the publisher, I think David Lomas has done a most competent job in this title. Anybody familiar with the Osprey Campaign series should realise that they get a basic primer - 'Look & Learn Famous Battles' as it were. Each book is less than 20000 words, has a set number of monochrome pix and an equally fixed number of colour plates. They are designed, I suspect, for a particular market and I don't doubt that the author(s) receive a specific brief - so many words on the commanders, so many words on this aspect, so many words on that angle.
Osprey's titles on some other WW1 campaigns are far worse. I don't name names but 19000 words to cover seven months bitter fighting, for instance, is a near impossibility.
Certainly I don't find Lomas' prose stilted, quite the reverse. It's a darned sight better than some of the turgid stuff that comes out of a few mid-Western universities I could name. It's clear and concise, the photographs are good and the artwork (Brits bashing Germans) is nothing to do with the author - at least if the jacket artwork of some of my books is anything by which to judge. It's the publisher's decision, dudes!
It's true the book concentrates on Ypres 1914 from the British angle. Again, I suggest editorial requirements and, in truth, there ain't the space to do much else. But it is a British publisher who turned this out, presumably for an essentially British market. I personally found the book a lot less one-sided than many similar publications penned by US authors.
Not that I get personal here but I wonder how many rejection slips some of your reviewers have received - if they've ever tried to write a book, that is. I'm not referring to this particular review but across the board. I sometimes think, psrticularly with non-fiction, that every single-issue fanatic in the world sounds off about what a lousy job the author has done. Of course, there are turkeys out there - mostly from graduates of CA Writing seminars - but no book makes it to print without editorial input. In theory, if the damned thing is unreadablr, it gets bounced. Unless, I suppose, your godfather happens to own the publisher but I don't think that is the case with Lomas.
Perhaps there should be a rule that critics should mention their own achievments. I've written 12 published books, as it happens, under a nom-de-plume and cheap fiction granted, so I do know something about what it takes.
Good Campaign Narrative.......2001-06-08
First Ypres 1914, David Lomas' sequel to his earlier Mons 1914, is a decent summary of the relatively neglected period of October-November 1914 in Belgium. During this period after the Battle of the Marne, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) fought the Germans to a standstill over a fairly small patch of Belgian mud, thereby denying the Germans access to the Channel ports. However in the process, the old pre-war British regular army was virtually destroyed. The BEF of 1914 was an elite force, but not designed for the grinding attrition warfare that was quickly developing on the Western Front.
The weakest part of this volume is the early sections on opposing commanders, opposing armies and opposing leaders. David Lomas seems to feel that he has done his duty in regard to this vital introductory sections by jotting down a few paragraphs and moving on. For example, the section on leaders barely amounts to one page of text and only comments on army-level commanders like Sir John French. Similarly, the section on opposing armies is far too brief. The Indian Corps that was dispatched to the Western Front was significantly different in training from the remainder of the BEF and this should have been highlighted in this section. Although the extensive order of battle partly covers up the deficiencies of this section, it is skimpy on the French. Opposing plans are also covered in far too brief a section.
Clearly the author has put all his effort into the campaign narrative itself, and as in his earlier Mons 1914, the operational summary is quite good. Excellent maps and photos add value to this account of First Ypres.

An Insightful Overview of America's Political Stakeholders.......2007-07-18
Political Agendas for Education gave an informative, albeit biased view of the current political stakeholders in education. Spring began his book with a 40 year old George W. Bush drunk at a party, and swearing off drinking from then on. What did this have to do with education? If I wrote a book about education and began with the Monica Lewinsky debacle, would I be seen as an unbiased writer? I don't think that that would be the case.
While Spring gives legitimate views of the political parties (i.e. Conservative, Neo-conservative, New Democrats, etc.), it is clear from his comments that he does not agree with the conservative views.
As an educated reader my goal is to critically analyze all views in a given topic without any bias whatsoever. I wish that Spring could do just that:(

Once the grain basket for South Africa, much of Lesotho has become a scarred and treeless wasteland. The nation's spectacular gullying has concerned environmentalists and conservationists for more than half a century, In Imperial Gullies: Soil Erosion and Conservation in Lesotho, Kate B. Showers documents the truth behind this devastation. Showers reconstructs the history of the landscape, beginning with a history of the soil. She concludes that Lesotho's distinctive erosion chasms, called dongas, often cited as an example of destructive land-use practices by African farmers, actually were caused by colonial and postcolonial practices.
