4 out of 5 stars Editorial.......2007-08-05

This book is very well written. It is like he is talking to me in person. He is, I feel, a little bit too harsh on the Queen but right on about Philip, Charles and the Queen Mother and Margaret. A good book.

1 out of 5 stars Monarchy, yes; truth, no.......2005-06-28

I purchased this book in the hopes that I might learn more about some of the contemporary issues/public opinion surrounding the monarchy of the United Kingdom. I was horribly disappointed. Quotes taken out of context, unattributed quotes, and silly gossip form the basis for a nasty polemic. This is the kind of distortion one probably should expect from an acolyte for republicanism. It is not the kind of book, however, that anyone interested in serious discussion about the monarchy would want to waste his/her money on. It is so unbalanced a perspective, that even those few positive contributions the author feels forced to cite during his diatribe are attributed not to generosity of spirit but to psychological disorder. It is sad that this kind of royal character asassination does not still carry a penalty of some time in the Tower.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written, hilarious and informative........2005-03-18

Johann Hari is one of Britain's most distinguished journalists and has won loads of awards - all deserved! This book shows why he is so acclaimed. I loved its mix of gossip, political wisdom, and intellect. I cannot imagine anybody but the most crazy monarchist disliking it (and even they would have to admit there's some great anecdotes here...)

(by the way, the other commenters here on this book seem to be slightly insane. An EU coup in Britain? Uh... yeah...)

1 out of 5 stars Republican cover for the creeping EU coup.......2005-02-19

Mr Hari is inded a 'non-journalist', as John Pilger describes him. He is arrogant, ignorant and pompous beyond his years. It's no surprise that the reactionary Trotskyite and Bush-loving fool Christopher Hitchens likes him. This damns them both! Hari hates the British royal family and wants to get rid of them in order to make it easier for Tony Blair to abolish Britain's sovereignty and make us a province of a new undemocratic state called Europe. This would open the door for Blair to become President not just of Britain but of Europe. A new Pope, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2004-04-25

I laughed so hard my gut ached when I read this book. It is a witty, extremely well-researched investigation into the monarchy, both intellectually stimuling and filled with gossip. The reviews were right. This is a must-read.

    Book Description

Jimmy Demaret: The Swing's the Thing tells this champion’s fascinating and untold life story.

Jimmy Demaret was the first golfer to win three Masters, with victories in 1940, 1947, and 1950. His total of 31 wins on the PGA Tour still ranks him among the top 15 golfers in total wins. These records established Demeret’s prominence in golf from the mid-1930s through the 1980s and led to his work as the host of All-Star Golf and Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf. An exuberant character, Demaret was known for his flamboyant attire and famous friends. In the year 2000, both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest named him one of the most important players ever in the game.

This book includes photos of Demaret and his friends Ben Hogan, Bing Crosby, and Bob Hope, as well as rare images from throughout his career.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Book falls short of Demaret's stature.......2005-01-17

Demaret was one of the most vivacious, colorful, beloved characters in the history of golf. I expected the book to be as much. Instead, it rambles here and there, with too few quotes and stories and too much history of secondary characters in Demaret's life. All in all, it fell short of my expectations. It lacked wit, humor and a behind-the-scenes account of Demaret's life.

If you want a step-by-step history of his life, this book is it. The author does his homework with the stats and facts. Unfortunately, the wit and life falls short.

    5 out of 5 stars Great find.......2004-11-17

I received this book as a gift and actually ended up enjoying it, although I never had much interest in the life of the legendary player, Jimmy Demaret. This book takes you along on his journeys and it takes you inside the memories of him from his fellow golfing pals. Takes you play-by-play to every win, lose or draw of his career.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Most Helpful Book I Have EVER Bought.......2007-09-19

I was skeptical about this book, even after I read the reveiws... I went ahead and bought it and I was very pleased with the results. It should be a handbook for anyone doing telesales (Inbound and Outbound). Good for Business owners, who call clients and potential clients (He focuses on that as well). Also great for sales reps who want to increase sales. My sales increased dramatically and my calls were more productive. I think it could even prove effective for sales reps who are not on the phone.

He even goes over how to answer the phone, what to say when someone is out to lunch, and how to get past gatekeepers when making outgoing calls.
It's an easy read, almost a page-turner and interesting too. I want to memorize it and anyone in sales/marketing should... Even a seasoned salesperson.

Don't buy another book about telesales until you have read this one. Trust, it is the only one you will need.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of tips, lots of typos, lots of contradictions.......2005-08-13

Overall, I would say it is a good book for non-sales people to buy. Joe points out many things to think about and makes many good suggestions.

Two things bother me about the book:

              - It has numerous typos and grammatical errors. Sometimes I've had to re-read sections to understand what he meant to say.

              - There are several contradictions. One example is on page 25. He says: "If they don't return your call, wait two days before calling back." But then 2 sentences later says that you should leave a voice mail stating: "If I don't hear back from you by the end of the day, I'll try back before I leave the office."

Personally, I don't want to buy from a sales person that doesn't do what they say they are going to do, so this is a really poor suggestion and really poor customer service (especially if the person you are calling really does want to talk to you)!

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-08-08

This is a no B.S. book on what it takes to sell by phone.
Whether you're setting appointments or closing the deal by phone it really doesn't matter. This is a hard hitting book.
I like the authors no nonsense approach to selling. They're either a high probability prospect or not.
The book teaches you how to get in and out of calls quickly and find the buyers today. The best on phone sales I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Tested salesmanship methods.......2004-04-08

A few things struck me about this book.

              1. It teaches you when to say "No" to suspects. I learned from it to be more discerning with whom I am talking. This book tells you how to determine, in minimum of time, if you are talking to someone who can buy from you (even if the other party won't admit that he's not interested or that he doesn't have the authority to buy). Like they say on Wall Street: "fill or kill".

              2. It gives you tips to help you establish your authority early in the call. How to deal with various brushoffs (more or less graciously).... When it's better to be direct, or even blunt... It's not just one style of selling, but rather a mix of hard- and soft-sell techniques that can be adapted to the situation.

              3. It gives you specific expressions to use. Short sentences that sound natural and go past the initial indifference and suspicion of people... I'm studying it to learn how to keep the flow of conversation so that it doesn't seem contrived, and how to go from one idea to another in a natural way so that I don't sound like a telemarketer.

              4. There's indeed no filler. Just lots of ideas about prospecting, presentation and closing. Some may not apply to your work, but you can extract the priciples. I've read this book two times and I open it almost every day. You must read it - now!

5 out of 5 stars All gems... really great. Worth every penny.......2004-04-02

I've been doing a bunch of jobs, CSR, Techie,
Help Desk, LAN ADMIN, telcom sales, upselling for
existing customers, etc. And, as such, the more
I learn from books, the more I know how valuable
my own personal career experience is, and the more
I guess that there's a lot more to learn and master
in this craft than anyone can imagine.

Think about moving from a bicycle speed, to tractor
speed, to car speed, to high performance roadster,
to airplane, to rocket ... this is how a sales

star evolves ...all the while, staying within the
bounds of acceptable phone behavior in terms of
honesty, truthfulness, not deceiving, not lying
obviously, and generally, being nice on the phone.
The big difference, is SPH, and getting a lot more
done, in a small period of time.

In this regard, Joe Catal's book, SALES FROM THE
              TRENCHES is really great.

I take it with me all the time to work. In the beginning,
I figured my collegues might take me as an amateur
for needing a book on my desk, while I work...after a while,
and meeting and exceeding all targets imposed on me, as a sales
rep, and mainly because I often have 2 jobs and work 13 hours
a day sometimes, and boredom, I take Joe's book with me to
work ...it really keeps me awake, amused, and I keep trying
out the rebutals, techniques that are new all the time.

Most of them work marvelleously...for example, "are you
prepared to DENY your family so-and-so priviledge ?" or
"I've been in the business for a while. When I'm told me
a customer like yourself, that you need to think about, it's
often because of the price. The price is too high, right ? How
much too high ? " etc. etc. etc.

              All gems...

The other comments, about super-stars being a different breed
from other people punching in the clock and behaving like the
GRIM REAPER and often getting rewarded for being among the worst
possible employees in the company, bringing everyone down, even
the top performers, also rings true. I've been in the business,

Andrew Grove has earned fame and fortune as chairman and cofounder of Intel. But, we learn from this remarkable memoir, he began life under very different circumstances, narrowly escaping the Holocaust and the closing of the Iron Curtain.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1936, Grove--then called Andras Grof--grew up in a modestly prosperous, secular Jewish family. Through foresight and sheer good fortune, they avoided the fate of many of their fellow Jews, fleeing the Nazis into the countryside and living in a dark cellar in which "the sound of artillery was a continuous backdrop." Under the Communist regime that followed, Grove distinguished himself as a student of chemistry and was seemingly destined for a comfortable position in academia or industry--until revolution broke out in 1956 and he found himself in that cellar once again.

How Grove emerged, "swam across" to America, and made a new life under a new name makes a satisfying conclusion to this humane memoir, which gives readers valuable insight into the business guru and technologist. --Gregory McNamee

              4 out of 5 stars A pudgy Jewish outsider becomes a determined U.S. immigrant.......2006-11-10

The reason we should read biographies, to my mind, is clear - to find out what drives other people towards success, towards failure, towards redemption, towards evil, even to find out how the Mansons, Stalins, Hitlers and Husseins grew up. The pursuit of a clue towards a person's later decisions is a delicious game, to find the key events in childhood that makes that person later go down in the history books.

However, there is one problem in an autobiography: the person is himself writing it, therefore editting out consciously and unconsciously factors that may well have been much more critical, omitted due to personal embarassment or because the family members and friend are still alive.

Reading the life of Andrew Grove, according to Andrew Grove (born Andras Grof), is to have a feeling that his whole childhood was drawn through a cheesecloth with small holes. If he did write it all himself, without outside editting, it reads in a very simplistic way, for a very complex man. It seems as if the "big words" were taken out, the more complex self-examination of his soul was either never set to paper, or deleted.

Nevertheless, you will find this book a good read, like a suspense story, as young Andris, only child of a Jewish comfortable family in pre-WWII Budapest, grows up with a strong sense of separation from others.

He has several marks against him from the start - he is Jewish, and all around him know it, and for the most part, in Europe, that was no plus. He rejects his own religion and remains fiercely secular, so he has no religious morality on which he hangs his decisions. He is a pudgy boy, whom others tease, whom girls reject. He turns to books, to study, to the English language, and finally to science, in his loneliness. His own father is taken away during the war, hence his mother loses her social life and is isolated along with her son. The situation is restored to prosperity and popularity after the war, when the father miraculously survives a dreadful work camp, returning home a filthy skeleton.

When the father is in clover, getting top level positions in the post-war economy, by means unclear to readers, all seems well, and people come in a steady flow to the house. Later, the father is accused of illegal activity, and loses his position and 75% of his salary, along with the pretty secretary and the car. The sensitive son, Andris, notices how popularity depends on the income and position of the father. NO doubt that this is driven deep into his consciousness more than anything else.

When a chance to leave Hungary arises in 1956 with the 17 days of fighting the Russian Communists, his parents do not hesitate to encourage him, for at least he has a fighting chance with relatives in New York City, and years of English lessons under his belt. These two factors hasten his journey by ship to America, where his relatives adopt him and support his way through college, until he has a degree in chemical engineering. His attachment to Hungary is weak to this day, and he has not returned since his mudcaked trudge over the border to Vienna. He never voices a strong hatred of Communists, perhaps because his own father must have been one to have been appointed an inspector in an area in which he was not qualified. Yet it is the Communist mentality which has hung over his country and threatened the Western world for decades. It is a strange omission in a man who celebrates America's open doors and willlingness to give immigrants a chance at great capitalistic success, something that could never have happened in a Russian-dominated nation.

I am impressed with this older man's willingness to write about his painful and persecuted youth, but any experienced reader can feel that there is a stiffness in the writing, especially in dealing with any of the women who did not mother him (i.e. his own mother and the aunt in NYC), as if the human elements in his life were not so critical for him. He seems to be a very tough nut, although he may have underneath some sentimentality, i.e. when the grandchildren were born, he wrote this book. He admits in the closing chapter that he himself is not sure why he does not return to the country of his youth, but I have my own suspicion - that he felt himself an outsider and a social failure throughout all those years, both as a Jew and a "nerd", and that his father's ups and downs with the economy and with the Communist affiliation made a much bigger impact than he will dare delve into. He perhaps underestimated the English-speaking world's understanding of this kind of dictatorship and decided not to go deeply into that part of everyday life.

Most refugees from Communism and Nazism are willing to go on for chapters about the restrictions and mind control of their homeland's dictatorships, but you will find that these are only briefly touched upon. I see the young Andris a boy of self-conscious, sensitive and rationally intelligence, who refuses to let external factors push him down, what the Finns call SISU. Whether it is outside takeovers like the fall of Hungary to COmmunism, the rape of his mother by the Russians, the imprisonment of his father, and other extremely horrid life situations, he shut his emotions down and plowed ahead. Yes, he is very much like the Finns, especially their men.

We can all admire Andrew Grove as a great leader of Intel, as a driven and highly intelligent man, but the person underneath, as revealed in this story, is a damaged and isolated person from his youth. No wonder that he did not want to write it down until so much later in life, when material success and a family of his own could prove that he was great.

              5 out of 5 stars Surprises me - Andrew Grove's childhood.......2004-10-02

Never would I have expected a man behind Intel could have such a childhood.I picked this book because it was written by Andrew Grove and mostly because it sets in the the times of World War II. Although I could not get much from a Jews perspective during the war time, however the book has captured some of the essence of tension during the period.

I was intrigued by his childhood story and found it hard to put the book down one I started reading it (Yes, it is cliche to say that..) The title of the book "Swimming Across" could not have been more appropriate with his escape from Hungary to the United States - that made such an outstanding person in man's history!

2 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective, but lacking.......2004-09-07

When I finished this book, I was rather disappointed at its incompleteness. No doubt Andy Grove must be an extraordinary person after immigrating to America with almost nothing and then moving to become the CEO of Intel Corporation. His book gives some insight into his personality through his childhood experiences and his dedication to hard work can easily been seen through his striving for an education.

The most disappointing aspect of "Swimming Across" is that it does not explain how he became such a successful person after moving to America. The story ends after his college education from City College in New York. It does not describe any part of his involvement in the development of Intel Corporation. Rather than a biography, it is more of a complication of his childhood reflections.

A good portion of the story revolves around his childhood experiences as a Jew during the Holocaust, followed the Soviet occupation of Hungary. It is interesting to read from a historical perspective. Much of the book also deals with his interest in chemistry and his quests for girls during his gymnasium (high school) years.

The writing is easy to read and not very intricate. While it offers an interesting tale of his personal experiences as an American immigrant, it does not have very much on how to climb the corporate ladder. It has a very good glimpse into the real Andy Grove's personality from a first person perspective, but not the details on what made him stand out as a successful individual among other Americans.

3 out of 5 stars Read this book or the content, not for literary strength.......2004-01-19

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Grove some time back. He's an intelligent man, with a powerful persona and strong sense of character.

I was surprised then, when I picked up the text. Swimming Across did not meet my expectations from a literary perspective. The presentation is very simply written and seems to be directed at an individual with a 6th or 7th grade reading level. I nearly put the book down and opted for another as a result.

The story however, is compelling. Mr. Grof and his family found a way to survive, compete, and eventually excel despite very long odds in Nazi and Communist dominated Hungary.

Read this story for its content (it is stirring). Read this to understand the character development of a leader. It is likely that your respect for the individual (like mine) will have grown.

5 out of 5 stars Stays with you.......2003-06-16

I loved this clear, accessible memoir about a boy (and later young man) who grows up in Hungary during the WWII and Revolution years, escapes to the West and comes to the United States to start a new life. I'm biased because my father is from Hungary and is of the exact same generation; he even had experiences similar to Mr. Grove's, going to preparatory high school, university, getting caught up in the Hungarian Revolution and escaping in the middle of the night to Austria. How wonderful to have some of the history and experiences of the times described in such an accessible way. The story is clear and straightforward and yet extremely moving, almost haunting. I loved how the title becomes clear when you read the book (an allusion to swimming across the lake of life and how not everyone makes it to the other side). How glad I am that Mr. Grove made it (across the Atlantic, at any rate) and wrote such a lovely book. It means a lot to at least one daughter of a Hungarian immigrant.

              Book Description

Originally published in 1904, Indian Fights and Fighters regularly appears in bibliographies of significant works on the history of the American West. Embracing almost three decades of Plains history, it contains not only Brady's clear, fast-paced accounts of the Plains wars, but also a number of eyewitness accounts, most of which were written especially for him and which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The Powder River Expedition, the tragedy at Fort Phil Kearny, the Wagon Box Fight, the defense of Beecher's Island, the Fetterman Massacre, the battles of Washita and Summit Springs, and the campaigns of Crook, Custer, and Miles against the Sioux all are fully treated. The introduction by James T. King sketches Brady's career and evaluates his sources.

Mr. Brady takes you into the west during a time when the Native Americans were making their last stand. His exhaustive journalistic studies have given us a timeless account of what it was like to both be a Native American and a Calvary fighter during the 1870's. Although Mr. Brady attempts to take an objective view of both sides, he is biased towards the Calvary and one cannot help but to ponder the Native Americans view point as they struggle for their freedom aganist unbeatable odds. I would recommend this book to anyone! I particulary enjoy reading historical accounts and this is one of the best I have ever read. 2/18/97 Tate Perazzelli 102212.2751@compuserve.co

1923. Illustrated with original drawings, maps and photographs. From the Preface: In response to a request for contributions from participants in the Modoc and Nez Perce wars, numerous papers were submitted, all of such high value, not only from an historic but from a literary point of view as well, that I had not the presumption to rewrite them myself-not even the proverbial assurance of the historian would warrant that. Therefore, I have contented myself with writing a general and comprehensive account of each of the two wars considered, leaving to the actors themselves the telling in full of the detailed story of the splendid achievements in which they were making history. I can affirm, therefore, that never before has there been included in a single volume such a remarkable and interesting collection of personal experiences in our Indian Wars as in this book.

4 out of 5 stars A western classic about the Nez Perce and Modoc wars.......1999-10-29

Cyrus Townsend Brady, an 1883 graduate of the US Naval Academy, went to the west to seek adventure and prosperity. Instead he initiated a series of works which highlighted his gift for brisk exciting narratives about the Old West. This work presents several rare, first person, revealing accounts of soldiers and Indian Chiefs, all veterans of the Nez Perce and Modoc wars. Brady also revisits and re-examines the history of the engagement at the Little Big Horn, the subject of his previous work, "Indian Fights and Fighters."

                              Book Description

Book Description: Two histories, two faiths, two points of view, all in one "flip-book."

Read "Israel in a Nutshell" to follow the development of Israel from God's promise to Abraham and the "chosen people" to the 20th century peace treaties.

Flip the book over to read the other side of the story. From the arrival of the Ancient Philistines in the land of Canaan to the construction of the controversial 21st century separation wall, "Palestine in a Nutshell" traces the region's history and politics through the perspective of Muslim Arabs.

Through short, easy-to-read chapters, you will find everything you need to know about the PLO, Zionism, the intifada, anti-Semitism, the refugee crisis and more in order to form your own informed opinion about the Arab-Israeli conflict.

                              5 out of 5 stars Even-handed and Concise.......2004-11-17

This compact little book does a very good job of distilling both sides of one of the most confusing conflicts currently brewing. Chock-full of both facts and the historical narrative used to evaluate those facts, this is a valuable addition to the library of anyone wishing to understand how each side sees the region and the issues. If we are to have peace, understanding both sides is an important first step.

Ms. Roarabach has done an incredible job clearly presenting both the history and present conditions of Palestine and Israel in one amazingly compact book. I would highly recommend "Israel-Palestine in a Nutshell" to anyone traveling to either of these countries or if you simply want to familiarize yourself with Palestine or Israel.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to International Studies reading lists.......2004-05-03

Israel/Palestine In A Nutshell is really two books in one. On one side is "Palestine in a nutshell". Flip it over and you have "Israel in a nutshell" on the other side. What is provided is the history of the current conflict presented from both the perspective of the Israelis and the Palestinians. A welcome addition to International Studies reading lists, Israel/Palestine In A Nutshell offers a informed and informative tour through the series of peace treaties between the two opposing communities from the Camp David accords down to the latest 2003 Geneva proposal. Also very highly recommended are the four other "World in a Nutshell" titles from Enisen Publishing: Afghanistan in a Nutshell; Iraq in a Nutshell; Pakistan in a Nutshell, and Islam in a Nutshell.

                                Book Description

In this time of concern over wetlands, many groups have compelling reasons to identify and delineate wetlands. Financial institutions use environmental evaluation as a part of their loan decisions. Civil engineers must plan sites without disturbing existing wetlands. Conservation groups wish to identify valuable wetlands for preserves or parks. Local and state governments need wetlands assessments for management and planning of existing and future public lands. And the Federal government has mandated that wetlands receive more attention. As our understanding of wetlands functions increases, the ability to identify and delineate them becomes even more critical. Practical Handbook for Wetland Identification and Delineation defines wetlands, describes their functions, and presents a variety of methods used to assess the extent of wetlands. Easy-to-use, it offers solutions to real-world problems and covers important subjects such as methods for identifying and delineating wetland boundaries, evaluating wetlands using aerial photography, indicators of hydrological, chemical, and biological processes, soil surveys, and plant measurements. The book also discusses methodological approaches to optimizing wetland delineation and permitting. The focus on wetlands by the Federal government has resulted in more stringent oversight by the U.S. Army Core of Engineers (USACE). This new level of federal oversight has underlined the lack of general knowledge related to regulatory requirements. Project delay and work interruptions are real, potential problems for landowners. Practical Handbook for Wetlands Identification and Delineation presents the strategies and methods for making wetlands identifications and delineations that meet federal requirements.
