Gabby Harnett is believed by many to be the greatest catcher of all time. This work chronicles Hartnett's life from his early years in Millville, Massachusetts, through his twenty-year career with the Chicago Cubs as player and manager, his time in various capacities in the minor leagues and with the New York Giants and Kansas City Athletics, to his post-major league career as a businessman in Chicago.
His childhood, early baseball experiences with the local team and with a nearby prep school, and his first professional baseball season with the Worcester Boosters of the Eastern League are covered in detail. Hartnett's major league career as the catcher for the Cubs is well-documented, including his near career-ending arm injury in 1929, the 1932 World Series that featured Babe Ruth's legendary "called shot," and Hartnett's famous "homer in the gloamin" against the Pittsburgh Pirates that propelled Chicago to the 1938 National League pennant. The author also compares Hartnett's statistics to those of his famous contemporaries, Mickey Cochrane and Bill Dickey, on a year-by-year basis.

Kids will love it!.......2005-08-05
My son devoured this book, scanning each page over and over. As long time Godzilla fans, to find any book about the Monster was a delight. Concidering that Godzilla mostly appeals to young boys, or old boys wishing they were still young, we found the book a nice addition to our library. The only thing we did not like was that the photos were all black and white, but there were so many of them it helps make up for it. It is a full size book, and provides a write up of the all the Monster's movies up till publication. It also provides a great chronological filmograpghy of non-Godzilla giant monster film from Japan and Korea. The appendix also provides the alternate title for the films, which often make locating a film easier. For a book about a moster, I htink it is great. Many fans may wish for someting Hemingway may write, but get real, it is just for fun and this is a fun book
A disservice to Godzilla fans.......1997-10-04
English language books covering the King of the Monsters are few and far between, but if you are searching for one, this is definitely one to skip. The photo reproduction is generally of poor quality and photos are mostly posed stills or frequently seen images. While purporting to be a fan, the author shows little respect for the subject in his writing, and factual errors are rampant throughout. Regretfully, this book is not worth the paper it is printed on.

Hard Reality.......2007-09-15
A glimpse of what was, and surely is to come; thumbs up for raw and brutal honesty. This is a book that stretches your mind past the boundaries of "comfortable Christianity", and forces you to ponder how far you, yourself, would be willing to suffer unspeakable horrors for the One who gave His life in place of yours.

A testament to Faith and man's inhumanity .......2007-08-14
"Tortured for Christ" is one of those books that can really make a Christian think about how much their faith means to them. Richard Wurmbrand's work is at times chilling in its description of man's inhumanity towards his fellow man (Wurmbrand admits that he left out alot of the atrocities which happened to him and others). One brief but memorable scene in the book is where Wurmbrand has a conversation with a man who had suffered under the NAZI government which says something about how many people compare two of the most evil philosiphies in the twentieth century. Sadly, Wurmbrand's opinions on the church in the free West may well have more than a grain of truth.
This book reminds me of a converstaion I had with a fellow student in an AP European History class who was a leftist. He made a comment about Christianity being the greatest source of mass murder in history. Of course most of those atrocities were caused by either people who went against their faith (if they ever had any) or had more to do with secular economic/imperialist policies (many true christians have been persecuted by false Christians as well). Both the instructor and myself reminded him of the tremendous horror atheism gave the world in the twentieth century (Lenin, Stalin, the Khmer Rouge, etc.) and the staggering death tolls.
The book is a quick read and is fairly well written despite the fact its author said it had no literary merit. I recommend it to anyone who wishes a glimpse of life under a repressive dictatorship. [...]Amazon sells the book for a reasonably good price.
A Must-Read R-Rated Christian Text.......2007-06-06
Pastor Wurmbrand's stunning, touching, encouraging and transforming testimony of faith that St. John speaks of in his first epistle, in the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ that indeed overcomes the depravity and atrocties of the Soviet regime. What happened to Pastor Wurmbrand was St. Paul's wish came true, where in the letter to the Philippians he wrote "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of sharing in his suffering, becoming like him in his death, and so somethow to attain to the resurrection from the dead". The name of Christ is greatly magnified in their suffering through which the message is clear: Jesus Christ is worth living and dying for. No doubt, along with the Apostles and the entire noble heavenly army of the martyrs of the Lord Jesus Christ, Pastor Wurmbrand, with his fragrant aroma of his sacrifice on behalf of his Lord, has joined this "great cloud of witnesses" the epistle to the Hebrews speaks of. Read this book, friends, and know that since we are "surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw-off everything that hinders and sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, who for the joy set before him, endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Amen. Testament to the Faith.......2006-06-22
This is an excellent little book that tells the remarkable account of Richard Wurmbrand, a Lutheran pastor who was tortured for 14 years in Communist prisons for his steadfast adherence to Christ Jesus. His stories will doubtless move you to tears, but his purpose is not simply to tug at your emotional strings--nor is the emotion without a powerful message. His courageous stand for Christ and the tremendous love that he and so many other Christians displayed to their captors and torturers under the most horrendous conditions is a powerful witness to the all-surpassing love of Jesus Christ that is alive in every believer. Truly only the supernatural love that comes from knowing the good news of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ crucified, could have produced such a love in the face of unrelenting hatred and persecution. Wurmbrand repeatedly shows through his stories and experiences how communism was intent on trying to destroy Christianity, and how some Americans are blind to the dangers of it. The book is very interesting and quick to read--the only downside is the disjointed narrative and flow of the story. This however, is to be expected after all the tortures he endured, and he admits as much.
America, can you see the underground church??.......2006-06-13
This book is an instrument and a tremendous blessing to all who read it. I just recently re-read it through tearful eyes, and I came to a conclusion that it is a wake up call for all Christians especially those in the West, which is ultimately America. Pastor Richard Wurmbrand speaks out about the underground church and their sufferings. His passion is clear; first to proclaim CHRIST no matter the cost and second to help the underground church.
When reading this book a constant theme inspires the reader in the form of a question. Are we willing to die for what we believe as Christians? This book brings out the true essence of a Christian martyr; a human being this is willing to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ no matter the cost, even unto torture and physical death.
Tortured for CHRIST gives testimony after testimony of the love of God triumphing over evil and sin. The Christians of the underground church are willing to bring that love of God even to a savage beast Communism & Atheism.
Readers, there is a challenge here: We need to help lift the burden of the underground church. Let's help them!

A Masterpiece of Research and Analysis.......2006-04-26
The battle for Leyte was one of the big ones. It was one of the few where Nimitz and MacArthur worked together to come up with the forces needed to begin taking back the Phillipines. In this book Mr. Vego shows an extraordinary amount of research in what both the Allies (mostly American) and the Japanese were doing to prepare for and fight the battle.
The most famous part of the battle was Halsey's decision to take virtually all of his carrier force north to fight the Japanese northern decoy force. This, of course, left the naval forces around Leyte very weak. This event again shows the careful research that characterizes the book.
Years later Halsey still defended his actions saying, 'given the same circumstances and the same information ..., I would make it again.' The author's conclusion, 'no decision can be considered sound if the commander does exactly what the enemy wants him to do.'
Writing many years after the battle Mr. Vego has the ability to draw a whole series of conclusions about the battle (too many to go into here) and his final chapters are a masterpiece of conclusions and lessons learned.

"The Elite Consensus: When Corporations Wield the Constitution," by George Draffan, a new book from the Program on Corporations, Law & Democracy (POCLAD), goes behind the veil of giant corporations—Enron, Bechtel, Halliburton, Monsanto, Pfizer, and others making our daily news—to show how the "system" really works.
Draffan describes how corporations leverage power through think tanks and business groups to form an undemocratic system of governance over citizens. He outlines the normal, everyday ways these institutions shape the national investment and political policies, portraying how a shadow system of corporate power effectively governs.
The corporate agenda is served equally by conservative, liberal, and libertarian philosophies, according to Draffan. Corporate power, he writes, descends from the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court grants of "personhood" and Bill of Rights protections to corporations.
Unlike muckraking books about scandals in one industry or another, Draffan focuses on the mechanisms of power wielded by the entire network of corporate players.
"Today's corporate leaders received a head start from the men of property who wrote the Constitution," Richard Grossman and Ward Morehouse, cofounders of POCLAD, wrote in their foreword that succinctly summarizes the book's analysis.
"The Elite Consensus" names names. It reads like a playbill of actors on the stage of domestic and foreign policy who "wield the Constitution" to their own ends. It gives profiles of those players—think tanks, business groups and non-profit organizations—whose "experts" are regularly quoted in the media promoting corporate agendas with no reference to their corporate backers. A valuable guide for activists, citizens, journalists, scholars and students, the book reveals the interconnections between these organizations and their revolving-door relationships with government. Interestingly, the book includes the Brookings Institution—a tax-exempt think tank commonly considered liberal or centrist—whose board includes corporate CEOs from AT&T, Chase Manhattan, Kissinger Associates and Bank of America, a former director of the World Bank Robert McNamara, and directors and trustees of major foundations.
"Corporate-driven think tanks and educators enjoy the prestige of university appointments where corporate agendas are developed and disseminated," writes Draffan, Executive Director of the Public Information Network, Seattle, WA. "Corporate foundations decide which charities and which environmental groups get funded. Investment bankers control more money than the World Bank and their unregulated speculation in national currencies has plunged Latin America and Asia into financial crises. Governments have become mere salesmen promoting multinational corporations, which are the `muscle and brains' of the global economy."
"The Elite Consensus" traces corporate funding of think tanks and organizations like the Business Roundtable, Chamber of Commerce, Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), International Chamber of Commerce, Heritage Foundation, Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, United Nations, and other non-profit corporations.
Draffan describes how a single corporation—General Motors—affected the economies of both Mexico and the U.S when it laid off 99,000 U.S. workers between 1992 and l996. He said General Motors became the largest private employer in Mexico by moving its operations south of the border. U.S. union workers were replaced by lower-paid contract and temporary workers making Manpower, Inc.—a temporary employment agency—the largest employer in the United States.
The political cartoon on the book's cover by nationally noted political artist Matt Wuerker illustrates the book's theme: the conflict between "We the People" and corporate power. His caricature of the Capitol building and Washington Monument shows a billboard hiding the buildings of corporate organizations whose power rests on the U.S. Constitution, supported by the building blocks of the 1st and 14th amendments. Constitutional amendments meant for citizens are the "rights" corporations use for themselves in the courts, as the book details.
Anyone who was affected by the recent power blackout, lost a pension in a corporation that went belly up, or lost a job in a company whose work was sent to a country with cheaper labor, will want to read this book. Public indignation at the Enron and other corporate scandals indicates the public is hungry to know more about what is going on behind the scenes.
