In scholarly yet readable style, Weir brings Henry and his court to life in meticulous, but never tedious, detail. Weir describes everything from courtly fashions to political factions and elaborate meals to tournament etiquette. Along the way she offers up charming--if all too brief--glimpses of Henry's court: tiny Princess Mary, still a very young girl, at her betrothal ceremony saying to the proxy, "Are you the Dauphin of France? If you are, I want to kiss you"; Henry weeping with joy as he held his long-awaited son and heir for the first time; Henry showing off his legs to the Venetian ambassador ("Look here! I have also a good calf to my leg"); Henry's courtiers dressing in heavily padded clothes to emulate--and flatter--their increasingly stout monarch. She also reveals some surprises, for example, that Henry and Katherine were still hunting together as late as 1530, even though Henry was desperately trying to have their marriage annulled. Weir also describes surprisingly happier times in their relationship; Henry loved to dress up in costume, and "was especially fond of bursting in upon Queen Katherine and her ladies in the Queen's Chambers.... Henry took a boyish delight in these disguisings and Katherine seemingly never tired of feigning astonishment that it was her husband who had surprised her." Henry's queens receive relatively little attention here (for them, see Weir's excellent Six Wives of Henry VIII), but this book is fascinating and a joy to read. Thoroughly enjoyed book........2007-07-09
I read this after reading Weir's Six Wives of Henry the VIII. It added addition information about him and was very interesting. While it got a little too detailed with names at times, overall I thought it was great! I especially like how when she talks about how much something costs that she also noted what that would equate in today's terms.
Compelling, well-researched account.......2007-06-13
Alison Weir has done a great job at bringing history to life in this extremely detailed portrayal of Henry VIII and those that surrounded him during his reign. Chapters are very numerous but quite brief, and each contains an unbelievable amount of details - ranging from descriptions of the materials used to construct houses and estates to what Henry VIII was served by his kitchen staff and what kind of fabric his tailors used when sewing his extravagant outfits. These small pieces of history serve as delightful ornaments to Weir's overall narrative, and they help paint a broad and precise picture of English life under the Tudors. Included at the back of the text is an extensive list of primary and secondary sources Weir used to construct her book, which are useful for readers who desire to do further research in Henrician and English Renaissance history.
The only flaws I could find in this text were a few, sometimes quite obvious, spelling mistakes. However, the book is so long and it offers so much information that this may be forgiven and overlooked.
All in all, a compelling and competently-researched read.

very informative and chock full of common and not so common historical facts. A must have for anyone interested in the period.
Real Estate Listings.......2007-01-23
I have read numerous other histories by Allison Weir, and this one simply does not measure up. Essentially, this entire work boils down to a compilation of real property listings regarding the twenty zillion palaces, manor houses and mansions owned and restored by Henry VIII and his courtiers. The first several times the author describes some of the king's residences, including very detailed room-by-room descriptions of the decor, the refurbishing costs and the furnishings, I was interested. By about the 40th mention of, "Then in 15___ he bought the So-And-So mansion from Lord X at a cost of X pounds and he hired Famous Artist Y to decorate it in the Artistic Style Z manner," I despaired. I appreciated Ms. Weir's passing along details of court life, dress, customs and other little factoids not found in many traditional histories, but her obsession with real estate in this one left me cold. Even though Ms. Weir's express intention was not to write a biography per se, she also did not warn the reader that she is, in fact, a frustrated real estate agent who is primarily interested (at least in this work) only in buildings and their contents. If you are not already familiar with Tudor England, this is not a suitable book to commence your study. Overall, I found it to be disappointing and not recommended for anyone other than those with an especial interest in architecture.

Another great biography from John Soister. Mr. Soister wrote the definitive book on Universal horror films from the 1930's a year ago, now he publishes the definitive biography of one of filmdon's acting giants, Claude Rains. A book on this wonderful actor was way overdue. Soister proves it was well worth the wait! Each of Rains' films is recounted in detail, with Soister's well informed opinion on each film, and Mr. Rains' performance. If you are a fan of Claude Rains, or Hollywood's Golden Era, THIS is a must book for you! He may have been short in physical stature, but Claude Rains was a towering giant when it came to talent, style, and film presence. You won't be disappointed in buying this great work!

Claude Rains, A Comprehensive Illustrated Reference is the book Claude Rains fans have been waiting for for years. It starts off with a wonderful mini bio from his daughter, Jessica. Especially nice, is a charming story about them going to see 'The Invisible Man' together. The reader gets a sense of Claude Rains, the man as well as Claude Rains, the actor. Both are well worth reading about. There is a detailed synopsis for each movie with lots of little backround tidbits and loads of great photos. Also discussed, in less detail, is his stage, tv and radio career. The author says that the book is a 'labor of love' and it shows. If your a Claude Rains fan, and who isn't,buy the book... you'll love every minute of it.

Anyone who has made enough transactions with Amazon.com can tell you, Amazon.com has its share of foul-ups. And when mistakes (that are bound to happen from time-to-time) do happen, the biggest errors occur in their customer service department. For me, I know that I have written e-mail after e-mail complaining about RUDE, ERRONEOUS and downright FRAUDULENT communication emanating from the unskilled and unsupervised excuse for a customer service department only to have other unskilled, unsupervised hacks respond. I kept explaining that I was not seeking compensation, I was trying to complain about Amazon.com's customer service, but Amazon.com either doesn't care or doesn't have a mechanism to care. My e-mails which always started, please forward this to so-and-so's supervisor never were. I can't wait for the follow-up to this book. This book is great if you have no idea how to write a complaint letter. However, most of us have common sense, and know how to express that we are "shocked, appalled, and dismayed"! Also, this book discourages the use of certain words and phrases for no other reason than that the author doesn't like them, or thinks they are overused. This book does provide some useful information on how to contact people you may want to send a complaint letter to, but this information can easily be found on the web (for free).

An Excellent Coffee Table Book/Conversation Piece for Fans.......2002-12-10
I'm somewhat of a new Doors fan, particularly of Jim Morrison. The hair and the pout drew me in first, then the music followed. When I found this book, I knew I had to own it. I was not at all disappointed. Sugerman has done a fantastic job of compiling the hundereds of pictures and newspaper/magazine articles from over the years into this informative collection. The progression over the years of Morrison's rise to fame and eventual downfall into drugs and self-desctruction is adeptly demonstrated. A must-have for any Doors fan.
Great Job Danny!.......2002-11-08
Danny Sugerman is someone in the Doors "family" that alot of people don't think very highly of. He has made a pretty good living out of Jim Morrison's death and continues to this day to fuel the many myths he helped create with his contribution to "No One Here Gets Out Alive". But if it weren't for Danny.....The Doors would not be selling so many records or books or anything on Morrison. Danny has helped keep "The Myth" alive. This is why The Doors are so popular today. Having said that, no single person worked harder to keep the Doors name alive in the 80's than he did- for that I respect Danny.
This amazing compilation of cuttings, reviews, photographs and articles was collected by a young Danny during the height of The Doors success whilst working as Jim's assistant-answering Jim's fan mail.
Beginning with the bands first forays onto the LA gig circuit the fledgling Doors took the rock press by storm with their doom laden sound and extremely smart lyrical imagery. From the Whisky to Miami via the Singer Bowl and New Haven we travel along on the dark journey to oblivion that was the Doors turbulent and sadly short career as seen through the eyes of the press and a young teenage kid. As it happened live and uncut.
Enjoyable And Fascinating........2002-09-24
"The Doors: The Illustrated History" is the best photographic, visual book record of the band. Compiled by Doors manager Danny Sugerman, it is a fascinating, visually rich and enjoyable display of a band that changed rock music and the amount of praise (and criticsm) they inspired. The pictures are great, they are clear, close and informative and clearly show how Jim Morrison created the theatrical aspects we so see so often in today's rock music. We also get different shots of the man, as the wild, leather-clad Lizard King and as a lonely, quiet poet. The articles and reviews are fascinating because they take us back to a time and place, but they are also surprising to read when compared to what is written today about certain rock artists. In one article dealing with the New Haven arrest where Morrison became the first rock performer to be arrested at a concert, the writer calls the music of The Doors "satanic, sensual and demented." A sign of what was to come with artists like Iggy Pop, Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper and many others. Some of the reviews are especially well-written, like one where the writer says the Doors music evokes images like the eye-ball slashing in Luis Bunuel's "Un Chien Andalou." Like the music, the images are timeless, and evoke a poetic, deep persona who's presence is ever so strong in rock. Like The Beatles, The Doors are an unforgettable force, you hear them once and never forget. The foreward by Jerry Hopkins, who wrote "No One Here Gets Out Alive," is also informative and has interesting things to say about the resurgence of Doors music. This is a must for any Doors fanatic and anyone who has ever been touched by the music and words.

I absolutely love this book. The introduction and the photographs are worth the price alone. This book has the lyrics to all your favorite Doors songs plus poetry (lyrics) from Jim Morrisons' spoken word album "An American Prayer." It has also got interviews and a behind the scenes look at what went on during some of the recording sessions as well as definitions as to just what Jim meant in some of their songs. The discussion about the meaning of The End is great. This book is a must for Doors fans from the most ardent to the just curious. The book is not one that will be looked at once or twice and put on a shelf. It is a facinating read no matter how many times you read it. The Doors: The Complete Lyrics increased my respect and admiration for the band, and Jim in particular, 1000 fold.

I can't believe, I REFUSE to believe, that this book is not in print. Out of all the Doors rehashed drunken Jim tales and bad poetry insights (with a few notable exceptions), this was the best Doors book around. This is where Jim's poetry, prose, attitude and expression developed, improved and kicked rear in the whole world: HIS MUSIC. The lyrics are the best writing of Morrison hands down. I'll take Moonlight Drive or The End or Indian Summer or End Of The Night over anything in that Lords and the New Creatures book anyday! Bring this one back, publishers! NOW!

I don't know what book the previous reviewer was reading, but this book has NOTHING to do with the Battle of Brandy Station. It focuses on the courts-martial of several members of the 11th Massachusetts Infantry resulting from their participation in a meeting of junior officers where they expressed their disappointment at the breaking up of the Third Corps, Army of the Potomac, in March 1864. Alarmist Generals brought the men up on charges of mutiny, even though their meeting and the resolution they passed seems utterly inconsequential by today's standards. At the time, Third Corps was seen as the "bad boys" of the AoP because of the recent Meade-Sickles controversy over Gettysburg, and for their early association with Hooker and Kearny (neither of whom were fans of McClellan).

The Mutiny at Brandy Station: The Last Battle of the Hooker Brigade taught me a lot about The Battle of Brandy Station. I learned that this was the largest calvery battle ever in US history and that it was a major battle leading up to the battle at Gettysburg(PA).

A Timely Contribution Regarding Supreme Court Nominations.......2005-05-19
It is hard to think of a more opportune time to read this new book on the strengths and weaknesses of the current Supreme Court nomination process. With the upcoming expected retirement of the Chief Justice, and the current foolishness occuring in the Senate over judicial filibusters, the solid and unemotional analysis offered by Professor Richard Davis is welcome to say the least. The author is very good in explaining how we have gotten into the current nomination mess: the role of the press in shaping nominee images; the incredible importance of interest groups and their energy in driving the process; the public expectation that nomination consideration will occur as much as possible in the open and not behind closed doors as in the past; and the role of nominations in reaffirming pertinent constitutencies for the groups, parties, and the pertinent president. In short, the process is no longer one conducted by the Senate in accordance with its own practices--instead each nomination (and the author does discuss particular examples such as Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter, and of course Robert Bork) has become a major public event and battleground as the various players maneuver for advantage. What we have lost as a result of this "take no prisoners" approach to nominations is all too evident. While the author does not unleash any startling new insights, the book stands as perhaps the best introduction for anyone interested in gaining an understanding of how the process currently functions. The final chapter is devoted to "Reforming the Process," and the author examines a number of thoughtful proposals for mitigating the current mess. Alas, given the current political malaise floating over Washington, one can only reply: "dream on, Professor."

We live in critical times for the world's diversity of plants and animals. It is universally agreed that a catastrophic loss of biological diversity is occurring at the moment, with species, and equally importantly, genes being lost forever. However, the signing of the Biodiversity Convention at the Earth Summit in 1992 drew attention to the need to conserve and equitably utilize biological diversity for the benefit of all humankind. The convention placed emphasis on the need for a complementary approach to conservation that employed both
ex situ and
in situ techniques.
Though much conservation and genetic research has focused on
ex situ techniques, where the biological diversity is moved from its original location for safe storage, relatively little progress has been made in developing strategies appropriate for the genetic conservation of biological diversity
in situ, in its native environment. The time is right for a definitive assessment of the principles required to conserve the genetic diversity of crops, their wild relatives and wild species within natural habitats.
This book therefore provides a practical and theoretical introduction to the techniques of
in situ conservation of plant genetic resources. It includes methodologies, case studies and in-depth discussion of on-farm and genetic reserve conservation, written by acknowledged international experts on the subject.
